Howdy, you beautiful soul!Today I'm sharing something that's very personal to me.It's a conversation I had--in my journal--with my 80-year-old self.I had this conversation with myself this past weekend, and I wanted to share it with you, too. It's what my older, much wiser, self-actualized version of me would say to me right now,AND I would suggest that you try this as well.I also detail my "Mighty 5" Appreciation technique, which has been so powerful for me. It's how I like to start and finish my day, and I can't wait for you to try it. It's the way I set up my day the right way and how I "bookend" my day to end the day the right way, too.I even share two of my Mighty Five lists with you.Deep gratitude and appreciation is how we love everything in life more, and I will detail that for you now.Hey--if you're reading this, can you hit me up at c@chipfranks.com and let me know...1) If this was useful for you, and/or2) What else you'd like me to talk about in these podcasts.I'd love to hear from you.THANK YOU!As we talk about a LOT in this, WE are loved and WE are deserving!Chip Franks ❤️

Howdy, you beautiful soul!Ooh, check out the picture associated with this podcast. That is an actual gravestone of another man--born two years after me, and dying back in 2001...and the name on the tombstone? Chip Franks. Hardly a common name. The story of this and how I found it and what it set into motion is in this podcast, along with many other concepts and ideas about Memento Mori and the five regrets of the dying. In this episode, we delve deep into the whole concept of "Memento Mori," which means "remember to die." When we think and meditate on our own mortality, and we realize that our bodies will stop taking breath, our hearts will cease to beat, and our skin will grow cold...Then we can USE that to inform our lives now. From Seneca to Stephen Covey, we delve into many of these ideas--And I share several ACTIONS and activities that can turn these thoughts and concepts into ways that we can actually improve our lives. After the Memento Mori deep dive (or medium dive, as I COULD have talked a lot longer), we go into the Five Regrets of the Dying. I was about to list them here, but then that might ruin the surprise when you press play on this. One of the exercises I mention in this Magnum Opus about Memento Mori is writing our own Obituary. Yes, that's strange, but you'll "get it" when you listen to this. The example that got me thinking about this was when my friend Giovanni Marsico did it and he posted it on Facebook. I said I would link that to the show notes...so here it is for you by clicking right here!Hey, I love that you're reading this, and listening to my podcast. Thank you, sincerely. The thing I'd like to leave you with as I sign off on this is that YOU ARE WORTH thinking about all of this. YOU ARE DESERVING of doing something to make your life even more extraordinary by doing these exercises--or others of your design. Please let this be a start to continuing or starting of designing and leading a life true to yourself...so that you shall never find yourself, "leading a life of quiet desperation."You are loved, and you are deserving.Love,Chip ❤️
Howdy, you Beautiful Soul,Well...this is the first episode of the Memento Mori series. I have to tell you that this one is extremely personal and close to my heart, as it has to do with the life of my Mother, Brenda Franks.Memento Mori means "remember death." It's a Latin saying that means keep death in mind so that we may live more fully today. This episode is a conversation between me and my sister, Laura Trela, where we remember our Mom. We pay her tribute and talk about the good and the bad from which we can learn. You'll get to know my Mom and my sister much more throughout this conversation, and also learn several things that you can add to your life to make it much, much better. As always, I truly appreciate you listening and sharing--for this episode especially. You are so loved and deserving. I hope you feel that as you read this, and you listen to our conversation today.Chip ❤️
Howdy, you BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!Two ChipChat Episodes in one week?!!Yes, I promised that--and I delivered that to you.My friend, today we're talking all about the concept of The Hero's Journey and specifically YOUR Hero's Journey. It's a concept coined by a magnificent human being named Joseph Campbell, and it's the story thread that runs through all great tales of humankind. It's the Call to Adventure, the Mentor, the Facing of the Dragon, and the Return with the Treasure. And more importantly than that, it's a way to think of our own lives. Here is an article I wrote all about The Hero's Journey to better understand it. "This Concept Alone Determines a Great Life..." by (ahem) Chip Franks. And HERE is the MOVIE about The Hero's Journey written, directed, and produced by Patrick Solomon...MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER (often playing on my laptop while I do work on it)...FINDING JOE!In this solo Chip-isode, we talk about how I discovered The Hero's Journey, what it is, a little about my current Hero's Journey and the serendipitous way in how that came about--which involved this very podcast and my conversation with amazing human and billionaire Naveen Jain. What I didn't mention in this podcast is that the school I'm starting, The Imagine Academy was named due to that being Naveen's favorite word, "IMAGINE."There are so many possibilities with that word!It evokes hope, dreams, innovation, ways to make things BETTER for us all. Then we talk about YOU, and YOUR Hero's Journey...which is the most important thing. I'd love for this ChipChat to get you to think of your OWN life and the Hero's Journey that you may be on now--or that you may want to search for.The suggested exercises for this are to:Watch Finding Joe.Read the Article.(optional) Order and listen to "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell and Bill MoyersHere are two questions I'd recommend to help find the Call to Adventure for your own Hero's Journey...write these out in a journal and spend some of the very best time you ever could in thinking about these:1. What did you want to be as a child? There are probably some clues there for your Hero's Journey.and2. What would you do if you had a billion dollars in the bank and didn't need to concern yourself with money?Think about those, and let me know what you're doing with your Hero's Journey! As always, I welcome all feedback at c@chipfranks.comYOU ARE LOVED AND DESERVING!Chip ❤️
Hello you BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!I'm introducing you to such an amazing human being--my dear friend, Majeed "Like Magic" Mogharreban.Majeed--as you will soon find out--is one of the sharpest, most clear-thinking people you will have the pleasure of meeting...He's also one of the very best speakers that I've ever heard in my life...which comes in handy if your website and business are named, "Expert Speaker."I enjoyed this one so much like I always seem to do when I get a chance to chat with Majeed. We go into areas that I haven't talked about on The ChipChat Podcast...namely, lockdowns, masks, issues of freedom, and government overreach (Majeed is in Canada). We also talk routines, journaling, asking better questions, how to make a life of TRAVEL...and just thinking differently than others. You're going to love Majeed like I love Majeed! With that, enjoy pressing play!Do you know what I'm going to say?I only say it because it's true, you know!YOU ARE LOVED AND DESERVING!Chip ❤️
Howdy, you beautiful, fearfully, and wonderfully made Soul! This week was another solo Chip-i-sode where I answer another great question from someone who is "Starting Over" at age 43, and what my advice is for that.I also go over an excellent thought process that has made a difference in my life. I learned the root of this with a several hundred dollar, twelve+ hour course, and you get it HERE, for free...Aaaaaaand...it's an improved version of what I learned originally as it's been refined over many years and lots of usages by myself and some others. It's called IPOD. More on that in a second.First of all, here is an article by the amazing Derek Sivers that I reference in this podcast, it was so good for me and I love that I get to share it...It's called "How to Do What You Love and Make Good Money."Then, I move on to the thought process of IPOD. It stands for:IntentionPurposeObstaclesDesignAnd it's a way to approach most anything of significance in our lives. Having an important conversation? Starting a project? Want to have a fantastic weekend? Want to set up the most amazing, romantic date ever for your lover?Use IPOD!!!Some of what we cover:The concept of educational investment. The origins of IPOD.A philosophy of living, deep intention with no attachment. The difference between outcomes and intention. When the why gets big, the how gets easy.Anticipating what could go wrong in advance. Why it's better on paper. The importance of design.Form follows function. The Idea List. And a lot more, jam-packed and dripping with useful, strategic information guaranteed to make life better or all of the money for this podcast will be doubled and refunded. Howdy, you Beautiful Soul! With this Podcast Episode, I will put you to sleep! This is an episode all about getting a better night's sleep...tonight and every night.I tried to keep this a little shorter in length (as per YOUR request!) so I got in a good amount of tips that have helped me to sleep much, much better (I talked a little about my experiments with this), and I hope these will do the same for you.I mention actual brands and things that may help you, and for your convenience, I was able to put quite a few of these in the links below with the tips for better sleep. These may be affiliate links--meaning that I'll get a little something if you decide to get them. I just thought I'd tell you that.First, here's an article that talks about the harmful effects of a lack of sleep.I didn't even mention this in the podcast, but little sleep is literally linked to a lower life expectancy and a higher risk of cancer. This is serious stuff! But don't worry--here are SOME of my tips for you. There are a lot more.As I mention in the podcast, what I'd ask you to do is to write these down and put a * or circle some of the ones that you'd like to try to make your life better. If you use some of these, and they help--let me know! Write at c@chipfranks.com.Here are the Ideas I talk about in the podcast (the links are where you can get these goodies):Set a BEDTIME alarm!Budget enough sleep time.Routine/ritual at the time.Win list. Appreciation.Magnesium supplement this one is the one I'm getting, it looks like it's pure.Blue light blockers shutdown complete! These are Swanwick glasses and rated highly by my friend Alex, who studies the heck out of this kind of thing.Chilipad/Temperature lowered Grounding pad this can be put on your bed under you, or you can stand on it while barefoot during the day.Sleep trackers. Sleep Cycle app. It's SLEEP CYCLE on the app store. I might've said Sleep tracker in the podcast...and that was a mistake! And here's the link for the Oura ringAirplane modeWhat are you grateful for?20 second hugs.BONUS! Mouth Taping!I also mention making sure your iPhone or Android have the blue-blocking setting on. To get that on the iPhone do this:Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift > Scheduled or Manually Enable Until TomorrowFor Android, look at the apps available for it. Here's one (I haven't tried it) that I found called Twilight. So, with that said--press play on this and decide what you'll do to get a better night's sleep. What am I about to say? Huh? Huh?That's right--!You are loved and you are deserving.Chip ❤️
Howdy from Texas, You Beautiful Soul!Today on the podcast, I'm joined by one of the most brilliant thinkers you'll ever hear--mind you, this isn't what HE says, it's just my estimation of him, how he thinks, and the extraordinarily unique way in which he approaches all things in life. It's my friend, Ameer Rosic. From his bio at AmeerRosic.com, he's a:Multiple Founder, Investor, Philosophy Junkie, and Psychonaut. You're about to be blessed with hearing Ameer talk about how he's turned from being a 9th-grade dropout into a phenomenal life of love, learning, abundance, He's one of the most interesting people you'll ever get a chance to meet, virtual or otherwise, and I know you'll get that when you press play on this edition of the podcast! In this VERY far-ranging conversation about leading a better life, here's some of what we discuss:Epigenetics. The software for life.Life Experiments.Social norms and feedback loops.Capital "R" religion and some of Ameer's spiritual beliefs (he's studied a lot into this)Spirituality as a base for our ACTIONS.The two coming futures: natural or Gattica? The thesis for A.I. and how it might think."Heaven is on Earth, and man doesn't know it."How Ameer got to be so freaking brilliant! How Ameer reads (or has a relationship with a book)! An easy hack for learning another language. How he and we remember so much of what we read and learn. What he's looking for when he reads a book. The MIRACLE of new life and him being a proud new Papa.2 BIG THINGS to lead a better life.Emotional Bank Accounts and what life is all about.And...a whole lot more. These lists are never all-inclusive!I should warn you, there are a few "F" bombs--although not nearly as many as I thought there would be, and traditional "big R" religion is tested here, so I hope you can allow that to your ears. I promise you'll be blessed for it.Thank you for listening to The ChipChat Podcast. Please know that you're loved and deserving!Chip ❤️
Howdy, you Beautiful Soul!WARNING: We just jump off WAY into the deep end of life, God, and philosophy just right out of the gate when this interview starts. This is a conversation with Sachin Patel, my dear friend, an absolutely amazing human being, husband, father, son, entrepreneur, and international speaker. He is the unique combination of being both extraordinarily brilliant and truly humble. He is Canada's top functional health practitioner who coaches hundreds of health care experts around the world. This conversation is so wide-ranging, and we just geek out over all things spiritual, the health care system as it is, becoming our own doctor in the future, and several ways to improve our health within about 6 or 7 minutes...literally.Here are a few of the things we engage in deep, ridiculously intelligent conversation about during this ChipChat:Why and how we are really ONE.The schedule of someone who runs three successful businesses and is still able to spend a lot of time with his family.Heroic doses of psilocybin and realizations with that.Health trackers (the Oura ring www.Oura.com)What happened when Sachin was feeding five mouths and his income was cut off suddenly. What's wrong with the way health care is set up now, and how that hamstrings doctors in the care of their patients. What the doctor of the future looks like. The fastest way to improve our health within a few minutes. Why most of us are mouth-breathers. Not as an insult, but literally. Why we're wired and not getting good sleep at night. How to improve our health given an hour, given a week, and given a month.Quick health tips to change our life dramatically in a very short amount of time. And a whole lot more, of course!I just know you're going to love this. Now, pardon me while I go tape my mouth shut for bedtime tonight...hah!Please know that you are loved and deserving.Chip Franks ❤️
Do you struggle with your visualization practice? I know I do - it’s the least strong of my S.A.V.E.R.S. and something I’m always looking to better understand, enhance, and otherwise improve. This is why today’s episode is guest hosted by my good friend, Chip Franks. In addition to being an incredible author, stroke survivor, father, and husband, Chip is an expert when it comes to the Miracle Morning and each of the S.A.V.E.R.S. And when he surprised me with this podcast episode that he recorded specifically for our community, I immediately wanted to share it with you. Today, Chip goes deep into visualization. You’ll learn why it’s the least understood of the S.A.V.E.R.S., what makes it so important, and discover 10 ways to get creative with your visualization practice. During today’s conversation, here’s what you’ll learn: #1: Be clear on what you want to visualize, and use your goals or a feeling that you want to have happen in your life to guide your visualization. #2: Take the hammer approach instead of the butterfly approach. #3: Engage every sense in your visualization to make the experience more awesome. #4: Deeply feel your visualization to give your subconscious something to work on. #5: Use the two-part visualization to imagine not just your end goal, but the steps you’ll take to get there. #6: Visualize in both the first- and third-person. #7: Push through the hard parts to conquer obstacles and prevent yourself from failing prematurely. #8: Create deep intention with no attachments. #9: Use visualization to act perfectly. #10: Combine visualization with your other S.A.V.E.R.S. to bring the best out of everything. We talk about making relationship magic again as promised in the last episode with these wonderful humans. We talk about the relationship trinity they say is necessary for having such an exquisite love affair:How being LIKEABLE is the key to create the relationships we want. What we need to do to stay in ALIGNMENT with your loved one.And how to have CLARITY in your closest relationship.Neil also gives a fantastic exercise that we can do with our spouse/loved one that will have them (and YOU) feeling so, so very good. I love this one.Then--after this conversation with Hunter and Neil, I jump back on to give you three relationship tips that have been so very good in the relationship with my bride, Laura (whom I call Angel). One of them is a little TOO transparent...but whatevs. I'm pretty much an open book and I'm just hoping that it helps the right person for this.SO--press play on this episode and learn these relationship secrets to make our love life so much better. You are loved and deserving,Chip Franks ❤️
Howdy, you Beautiful Soul!Once again we have a spectacular conversation about leading a better life. This week, it's with Filmmaker, Minimalist, Hiker, and YouTube Sensation Kraig Adams. One of the absolutely coolest things about hosting a podcast is that I get to reach out and talk with some absolutely fascinating and amazing people. And this was one of those times.I became aware of Kraig through a pretty cool circumstance--which I detail in the podcast--from my brother-in-law, who I call "Boob," (it's okay, he calls me "Boob" too). He's an avid hiker, and he showed me some places he wanted to hike in these beautiful videos on YouTube.I was entranced. The videos took me away to the mountains. The music calmed me while dealing with my mom's hospice. It was a balm for the soul. I absolutely loved these videos and I went to his channel and started watching them ALL.His YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/user/KadamsMediaand his website is: www.KraigAdams.comI also watched several videos he has about Minimalism, the philosophy of getting rid of belongings and maximizing personal freedom.I became a fan almost instantly. The way Kraig puts it is that he's a filmmaker going on hikes rather than a hiker trying to be a filmmaker.Once you see his videos, you'll understand. This approach has obviously worked, as he has right at 60,000,000 video views, 565,000 subscribers to his videos, and is able to make a great living doing something that he loves. If you know him, you already know this. If you haven't been virtually introduced to Kraig yet, you're going to thank me for this.In the podcast, we go over some of the following topics:What LIFE is all about.Artificial Intelligence and Kraig's fear of that (we disagree on this one)...Older/Younger ParadigmHow Search Algorithms are curating our life--and maybe causing determinism in our lives. The economy of attention and how FEAR plays a role in that.Life Philosophy...true or useful?Kraig's view of what he does, and how unique and beautiful that is.Hiking...in Nepal, Iceland, Chile, and Europe. The benefits of being alone, mediation, patience, and being bored.NYC during Covid. The philosophy of Minimalism and living it rather than saying it.How does one start with Adventure Hiking! How to get as friggin' brilliant as Kraig, and the number one critical aspect to learning.Living by serendipity. And the MAIN THING in leading a better life...the magic thing that raises all ships.I'm excited to get this to you. I think you're going to love this and Kraig!Go ahead and click "Play" and enjoy this deliciousness. And remember that you are loved and deserving!Chip Franks ❤️

We’re living not just in a global pandemic, but a global mental health crisis. More people are struggling mentally and emotionally than possibly ever before. In fact, nearly half of Americans report the coronavirus crisis is harming their mental health, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll. However, what can give you the power to manage your mental and emotional state, in times like these, is a strong sense of control of your inner world. Today, we talk about how GRATITUDE can be the key that unlocks the door to your inner freedom. There are few people I know who excel when it comes to their mental and emotional well-being, like Chip Franks. Chip is a master of choosing the emotion that best serves him in any given circumstance, no matter how difficult or challenging it may be. You’re going to hear Chip talk about dropping his mom off at hospice last week, and how he’s able to remain grateful and joyful, even in the midst of losing his dear mother. Today, Chip joins the podcast for the sixth time (not including the times he’s served as a guest host) to share insights on the power of gratitude, about the joy he feels even as he navigates the inevitable, and how we can bring those feelings into every challenge we face - and every area of our lives. In today’s episode, I’m introducing you to my friend Chip Franks. We have a very emotional conversation that feels heavy at times, but it is also very light and hopeful. Chip shares so openly about his experience with worthiness and depression. He also walks us through the birth of his son Alec who has Down Syndrome as well as the moment 3 years ago when Chip suffered a stroke. Although Chip had days where he was unable to get out of bed, he is now known as “The JOY Guy” and is one of the most giving, generous and kind people I’ve ever met. He shares with us the steps he took to move through his depression and how you can use them too. He is now able to find so much gratitude and even joy in life’s hardest moments. “Every experience is given to us and there is a Divine purpose behind it.” ~Chip Franks I hope that this conversation will help you to go out there and be kind to yourself and to others. Today’s Episode: “6 Years of Wisdom In 45 Minutes” is something very different. It’s an actual message taken from our Best Year Ever Blueprint (BYEB) Mentors program that we introduced this week. I asked Chip Franks to choose one of his favorite videos from inside the program, and to use the audio for this week’s Achieve Your Goals podcast episode, to give you some added value this week. This particular BYEB Mentors session that he chose features me, and my two dear friends, Jon Vroman and Jon Berghoff, sharing our most valuable lessons learned during the past 6 years of hosting the Best Year Ever Blueprint. And while I’ve been pretty open about my struggles this past year, I’d say this is the most vulnerable I’ve ever been. This session takes you really deep into my lowest point, the reasons why, and more importantly - what you can do now if you’re struggling, too. We also give you universally applicable self-awareness activities that you can immediately implement to improve any area of your life. This is some extremely valuable knowledge—but something that we all know is that knowledge isn’t power, it’s only potential power. So how do we put this into practice? To help you put this into practice, we’ve put together some journaling (aka “Scribing”) questions in the BYEB Mentors program for this particular session and copied them in the show notes and we suggest you put them into practice. Chip Franks, known as The Joy Guy and Chief Miracle Worker (CMW) of the Miracle Morning community with #1 bestselling author, Hal Elrod, is quite possibly one of the most appreciative, kind and joyful people on the planet. Chip wasn't always able to feel this way and struggled in the past with depression and then having a stroke in the past five years. Chip shares some incredible wisdom about how to have more joy, gratitude and to deepen the sweetness of your life. The 4 Joy Pillars: Activate appreciation in ALL things (easier said than done, this is a daily practice) Affirmed philosophy - learning to feel the divine timing of everything Abundance and adding to your life - bettering yourself through positive personal development AOk acts of kindness - do one act of kindness every single day. This will raise your joy quotient! Intuition: Chip's take is that intuition is the gateway where God speaks to you and is always for your best. 10x your Gratitude and Gratitude Practice: Chip recommends doing this practice every day in the morning and evening. Ask yourself these 5 simple questions and journal on each of them: 1. Gratitude for something profound 2. Gratitude about something you take for granted 3. Gratitude for Divine Cherishing (something you could consider bad, but looking for a blessing behind it) 4. Gratitude on people, places, things 5. Gratitude for an experience, or person, place or thing. Wear a coin in your shoe. Sounds odd, but Chip has been doing this for over 5 years and it's a great reminder everytime he feels the coin to be grateful, present and mindful. He said it reminds him to allow God to show through his actions. Set a joy alarm every day at a time when you feel most sluggish. Chip's joy alarm says "I'm so very blessed!" and plays the song 'It's a wonderful world', to remind him to stay in that space of gratitude, connection and joy. In the last episode of the podcast, my Chief Miracle Worker, Chip Franks, spoke to author Akshay Nanavati about the profound benefits of utilizing accountability in our lives – and the power of having a dedicated accountability buddy – in order to help you achieve your goals. Chip and Akshay also took things to the next level and even announced their own accountability partnership. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, I highly recommend you click here to do so before you listen to this one. Today, we’re doing away with the traditional interview format to really explore what Chip and Akshay’s accountability partnership will mean for both of them. You’ll get a behind the scenes look at what this process looks like, discover how it can get a little messy (and why that’s okay), and hopefully get a sense of what could work to help you create a process - and partnership - of your own. Achieving anything worthwhile is difficult, especially when you decide to do it alone. Human beings are tribal creatures, and most of us can benefit from some form of structure and community to turn our biggest dreams into reality. In today’s special episode (Part 1 of 2), my Chief Miracle Worker and guest-host, Chip Franks, is talking with our friend, Akshay Nanavati, about the game-changing power of having an “accountability buddy” — someone who challenges you to move beyond your comfort zone, provides you with the extra support you need, and helps you to grow and improve in order to achieve your goals. Akshay is the author of FEARVANA: The Revolutionary Science of How To Turn Fear into Health, Wealth, and Happiness, where he explores how to transform potentially negative feelings into incredible strengths, and has been recommended by Seth Godin, Cal Newport, and even His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Today, Chip and Akshay talk about the benefits of having an accountability buddy, why you need one as a high achiever / entrepreneur, and who that person should and shouldn’t be. You’ll also learn what it takes to initiate and build this type of relationship. As the name implies, the Thanksgiving holiday is generally a time to give thanks for everything that we’re grateful for – but is there more to it than that? Can there be more to your practice of gratitude than simply stating what you’re thankful for while you’re gathered around the dinner table this Thursday? In fact, there’s a huge difference between passive gratitude and active appreciation. People who practice active appreciation don’t just experience greater happiness in life - they have the power to change their brains for the better. Today, “Chief Miracle Worker” Chip Franks returns as our guest host to take you through the framework, exercises, and powerful quotes from thought leaders across history that inform his thinking. You’ll learn how Chip cultivates gratitude, active appreciation, and different techniques you can immediately apply to your own daily practice. Meditation, or “Silence” as represented by the first “S” of the SAVERS that make up the Miracle Morning, is a proven, powerful practice that can improve your emotional health, increase your self-awareness, and strengthen your attention span and focus. That’s why, for today’s episode of the podcast, we’re doing something a little bit different. Chip Franks – my close friend and Chief Miracle Worker – is going to share several tools and techniques you can use to help with your own meditation practice. Whether you’re brand new to meditation, or have been doing it for years, there are always ways to get more from this life-changing work, and we’re excited to share this knowledge with you. You’ll also learn about the brand new “Meditation Challenge” that we’re hosting in our community, how you can participate, and how to make meditation a catalyst for positive change in your life. If you practice The Miracle Morning (and specifically the S.A.V.E.R.S.), I think you’re going to love today’s *special* episode of the Achieve Your Goals podcast! Today, we’re doing something a little different. Instead of our usual podcast format—where our guests talk about how they achieved their goals and how to get more done—I’m giving the floor over to my good friend and Chief Miracle Worker, Chip Franks, for a training and tutorial to help you get the most out of your Miracle Morning “Scribing” (aka “Journaling”) practice. Among many things, Chip has one of the most effective Scribing practice I’ve ever seen. Though he goes through almost 250 pages in his journal every month, he rarely spends more than about 15 minutes a day scribing. He believes that it is the most important personal-development practice that exists and a powerful way to turn ideas into action. Chip also journals to deal with anxiety and overwhelm, have a conversation with himself, and become an objective third-party with himself when he needs it the most. Today, Chip joins the podcast to share 10 techniques to optimize your Scribing practice. I’d love to see you commit to giving the ones that make sense for you a try - and see how scribing can change your life for the better. Imagine being on a plane headed to your dream vacation. Let’s say it’s Italy. You spent the last two years planning it. It’s all been paid for. Your itinerary is planned out for each day with all of the sights you want to see most You know all the restaurants, museums and ancient ruins you will be seeing and when. All the details have been checked off and the weather is supposed to be beautiful the entire time. You settle into your seat on the plane. It’s a long overnight flight. You put your seat back in the reclined position, put on your eye mask to block out any light and decide to sleep until your long-awaited arrival. You wake up to the sound of the pilot saying, “We are preparing for our final descent.” A few minutes later the wheels touch down on the runway and he says, “Welcome to Holland!” You are confused. This isn’t what you were planning. You had your heart set on Italy and you have no idea what to do next. We all have our hearts set on certain things turning out a certain way. It can be a relationship, a child, a job or a business. What do you do when the thing you thought was going to come to be doesn’t and the thing that did come to be is so different that you have a hard time accepting the new reality? Our guest this week had this very thing happen to him. Chip Franks shares with us the raw truth about not getting what you thought you would in your new baby. But what he shares applies to every area of life. Take a listen here and enjoy the show.
It wasn't very long ago that Chip Franks was taken out on a stretcher in the middle of a conference for entrepreneurs after just having a stroke. As his wife cried and his children were alone in their hotel room, one question consumed his mind: "Did I tell them everything I wanted to tell them?" This led to him quitting his job to write a book outlining everything he’d want his kids to know if he wasn't around. The result? Life Lessons From Dad: 101 Ways To Get More Out of Life From Someone Who Loves You - a 685 page handbook for life. Chip is an entrepreneur at heart - he started early, selling calendars door to door as a child, and went on to build and sell a real estate and property management company after 20 years as a broker. He’s shared stages with Tony Robbins, Peter Diamandis, Lewis Howes, Daymond John, Simon Sinek, and today, he joins the podcast to share life lessons and his practical instructions for how to realize them. Welcome to JoeVolunteer Radio! This is your weekly dose of inspiration, of humans helping other humans beings and showing you that this place is really a great place to live. It's all about HUMAN KINDNESS. This is part two of our episode with Gillian Mandich "The Happiness Doctor". We go deeper, talk more about the science of kindness and happiness. This is more of the "prescription" episode--how to actually BE happier and Kinder. It is such a pleasure and so much fun to know how the mind works in situations like this. Open and listen to this show, get inspired, know yourself better, and lead a better life! Thank you! Your hosts: Chip Franks--the founder of JoeVolunteer. Husband, dad, author, and entrepreneur. Welcome to JoeVolunteer Radio! This is your weekly dose of inspiration, of humans helping other humans beings and showing you that this place is really a great place to live. It's all about HUMAN KINDNESS. WOW!!! This episode is with Gillian Mandich, a happiness researcher at Western University in Ontario, Canada. We talked about the actual science behind happiness. You can find out about her, and sign up for her e-book on how to be happier at www.GillianMandich.com. We KNOW we feel good when we help others, and now we get to know why that is. Gillian took us behind why that happens. If you want to know how to be happier, and you want to be the type of person who shows more kindness, then there are actual scientifically PROVEN ways to make it happen. We geeked out a bit. We talked about dopamine, seratonin and other chemical cocktails going on in our system when kindness and happiness occur. When Gillian talked about the kindest thing someone had done for her, we were able to go "behind the curtain," to see what happened in her mind--and the mind of the doer--to show how it affects us as human beings. What's cool is that the giver and receiver of the A-OK (act of kindness) aren't the only ones that benefit! We also talked about what you can do to actually increase your happiness, and had a serious conversation about getting out of depression, and what to do if you feel you don't have any happiness. It was enlightening to say the least. We love that we get to introduce you to Gillian Mandich! Your hosts: Chip Franks--the founder of JoeVolunteer. Husband, dad, author, and entrepreneur. This is Part 2 of my interview with Chip Franks— entrepreneur, family man and home educating dad. In this episode Chip talked more about how they have learned to meet each of their children’s learning needs, how his daughter Mandy was accepted into College as a homeschooler, and advice he has for other parents looking to home educate.Homeschooling To University Chip’s oldest daughter was a junior in high school when they started homeschooling. They both decided that a part of her home education would be getting a job. She found a job as a barista at Starbucks. The experience has been fantastic for her. She is learning life, and how to deal with people. Even with her job, Mandy still completed her last two years of high school in one year. The day of our interview was her first day of college. Attending post secondary has always been Mandy’s goal but they were unsure how this could be possible as homeschoolers. So after a speaking at a Harvard University event Chip spoke with a college application counsellor. He was worried that homeschooling may hurt her prospects getting into a good college. The college counsellor told Chip that it’s actually benefit. He told them that if they concentrate on the experiences they have learned, and the things they have done then package it up beautifully she can get into any college she wants. (For the US, this package also includes a good SAT score.) His biggest recommendation to Chip was to make the application interesting, make it fun and show how Mandy learned. Schools see the same applications every time. When they see a unique application, that’s what gets you in the door. The College Application Process For Homeschoolers Mandy looked at Harvard and found out she would not have a problem getting in but Mandy wanted to stay fairly close to home. For her college application they had to make up a curriculum and create a transcript for her. They figured out which classes she had to have in order to graduate. She completed those with independent focus. They knew their outcome and focus–to get into college and have fun while learning and enabling her to become a great person. Mandy applied and got into quite a few colleges. Since she is young she decided to do her first year at community college while living at home before she moves off to a larger school in two years. She plans to attend Texas A&M.Alternative School Aly, Chip’s other daughter now attends an Acton Academy affiliate – ESTEAM Academy which fits Aly’s learning style well. The school focuses on the Hero’s Journey because they know each kid can change the world. The school day starts with a Socratic circle. They start with a question, the kids answer as they see fit and then defend their answer. The first day Aly started at the school the question was-“what are the biggest problems in the world and how can we solve them?” The school has guides, not teachers. They learn how to think critically, and speak publicly. The school uses Khan Academy as a tool with their core curriculum, D.E.A.R. time(Drop everything and read) and afternoon quest time. Students choose their own books for school but they have to explain to the teachers why these books should be used in their personal curriculum. In High school the kids do more apprenticeships. The school is housed out of the same building as a working film school which the kids are involved in. The projects are all hands on, including entrepreneurship projects where they showcase their business to parents and community. It’s not just show and tell but they sell, service and try to turn a profit. For Aly, this school is ideal.Take The Initiative To Do Something On Your Own I asked Chip what he sees for the future of education. He has strong opinions about how the education model works now but says he is not going to be a instigator of change for the whole of the schooling system. But he IS an instrument of change for his kids and their lives. He knows he can also set an example for others. He feels that parents need options and choice as to where they educate their kids. Tools like the internet change the game. People are seeing the unique opportunities in education that exist. There will be a revolution and the rumblings have started. You will still have detractors. But it starts with YOU. As a person, and parent. Take the initiative to do something on your own.The Amazing Alec Alec, their youngest child has Down Syndrome and Chip spoke of the joy and differences that he brings to the world. Alec is currently attending their local school. He has been in the school for the last 2 years as part of a special education class. This year Alec started an inclusive kindergarten. They will keep an eye on how the change in structure will be for him but are considering moving because of the distance they are from both Alec and Aly’s school. The move would also bring them closer to an alternative school if need be. Alec currently gets picked up at their doorstep at 6:35am and once he finishes school at 3:50 he attends a childcare centre. It makes for a very long day and week. The RISE school is an independent school they have looked into. RISE is made up of gifted and special needs children. The unique focus of the school is having the students teach and learn from each other. For now Chip is happy with where Alec is. They will continue to observe, try and will change if need be.Chip’s Homeschool Advice Chip left me with wonderful heartfelt advice. “If you are thinking about the homeschooling journey know that you are not perfect, but that is okay”. Chip said he was scared when they started homeschooling but he realized that being scared is okay. Getting it wrong can be the best lesson. He suggested doing a trial session, and talking to friends. “As a parent, you have to be okay with yourself and love yourself enough to make mistakes”. Everyone is doing the best they can, and you don’t have to make it perfect. Showing your love to your children is the gift. Everything is a lesson. For those families where only one parent is on board– Chip recommends both spouses get together to talk about it and get on the same page. The goal is always to do what is best for your children. Be willing to explore all options. From that viewpoint you can then try things out but you don’t have to burn your bridges. You can always go back. As a dad Chip says his duty is to provide options for his kids. It’s also important to talk to your kids and see what they think. Have your kids speak with your spouse. Chip Franks– insights from an entrepreneur, homeschool dad and author. The tipping point to homeschooling his daughters, the lessons the process has taught them and the legacy he wants to leave for his children.Family Man Chip Franks is a family man with 3 children. He is also an entrepreneur, author and home educator. His oldest, Mandy is 17 years old and entering college this year. She started homeschooling last year and during that time completed her entire high school requirements. His middle daughter Aly is 13 years old. Aly is a self proclaimed “nerd” and his partner in crime. Chip’s youngest, the amazing Alec, is 5 years old and just started kindergarten. It was actually his first day of kindergarten the day of this interview. Alec is a beautiful soul that has Down Syndrome and has truly expanded their capacity to love. The Family’s Learning Journey Their family learning journey is unique to them. Chip felt that the education system was not working for his girls. They have tried public school, homeschool and private school. They do what is best for the child and family. Mandy was a sophomore in high school and Aly was in 6th grade when they decided to homeschool. Everyday Chip drove his girls to school and everyday they cried before they had to go. Chip talked to others about homeschooling and decided to try it out. His wife who believes in the traditional education system agreed but not immediately. The Tipping Point There were a few circumstances that caused a tipping point for Chip to try homeschooling. Chip had butted heads with his school district because his girls had missed so much school. His oldest daughter was sick quite often. The district they live in only allows a certain amount of days missed of school and if you go over that amount students must make up that time on weekends, over lunch or during the summer. His daughter that was sick quite often would have to make up these days. She would come to school, sit in a room and stare at her phone just to clock in the hours. He also saw that she needed more real life experience to help prepare her for her career and life. So many times students spend years in school or getting ready for exams but they never really explore the fields of interest they like. Chip felt she was getting a lot more from going out and experiencing life. Homework was also taking up a lot of time. His daughters would come home and be up until late completing homework to get back up again early the next morning to restart the cycle. What If My Spouse Doesn’t Agree With Homeschooling With this tipping point he decided to try out homeschool. He asked many friends who were homeschooling or unschooling entrepreneurs how they did it. He and his wife came to an agreement. The girls would complete their school year. They would try homeschooling over the summer as a test and if it didn’t go well they could always go back. It wasn’t an incredible success at first but it was good enough. They girls loved it and were happy to continue homeschooling. Chip’s wife is still not completely convinced but one thing that did help her to feel more certain was watching the documentary Class Dismissed together as a family. What Their Day Looked Like When the girls started homeschooling Chip set up a schedule for all three of them. They went to the library and got a private room where he would work while the girls worked on school. He had to be on site at his office only once a week. In the morning the girls completed school subjects. They used programs like Khan Academy for a lot of it. Mandy wanted more in-depth material so they ordered textbooks for her. Aly wasn’t excited about Khan Academy so they tried an on-line curriculum. Unfortunately it became too restrictive and just a repetition of school but at home. Not only that, it also ended up straining Aly and Chip’s relationship because Chip felt he had to become an authoritarian in order to get Aly to get her work done. In the afternoon they did “Daddy Projects“. They made a list of 30 big projects to get them to learn on their own and be resourceful. They kept a journal, created Evernote accounts to keep track, defined their own morning routine including reading The Miracle Morning, watched the Dead Poets Society and learned about the philosophers and poets. Chip also had his daughters right Idea Lists (taken from James Altucher). An example of an idea list is 20 ways to make my life better without a lot of effort. Chip loved this time with the girls. He says they had fantastic insight and he loved seeing how their minds worked.Learning While You Go As their journey progressed they realized that what they were doing was not working for both of their girls. One was quite independent and self-driven. The other needed more guidance. Since both Chip and his wife are entrepreneurs their schedule didn’t allow them to be with her all of the time. The family came to the decision that Mandy would continue to homeschool but Aly would not. They searched their area and found a private school that best suited Aly. This year is now her second year attending an Acton Academy affiliate. Aly now thrives in school. The Time We Have With Our Kids Is Finite “We only have 18 summers with our kids.” The time we have with our kids is finite. One of things they wanted with their eldest was to spend more time with her. And now they have that. This is what has led Chip to the book he wrote for his children–“Advice From Dad.” All the things that you should talk about but we never really seem to find the time to do.Advice From Dad, The Book Chip wanted to leave a gift for his children that could appreciate even when he is no longer on this earth. The book is divided into 4 main parts–Body, Mind, Heart and Soul and is filled with great examples and anecdotes to living a better life and being a better person. Just the kind of advice a dad with great life experience would give. Actually, a dad with great life experience and a lot of love for his children. One of these examples is about business but it still reflects well to our life. He says a lot of businesses are built like a hobo shack. Many go out and build without giving a lot of thought to what the foundation is like. Not a lot of thought is given to sequential order. In our life we want to build fast. We want different “shiny” things and to try out different things. The trick is to make sure that you first have your foundation laid. “If I had one thing to tell my kids what would it be? What could they learn? That they need to learn to love themselves.. That they should follow their bliss and do something that thrills them and they will always have a place to turn to and they will always be loved unconditionally. They will never get that in school” Chip, I think you are doing a fantastic job. You are well on your way.
