In conversation with award winning broadcaster and journalist, Tracey Matisak. ''America's most compelling popular historian'' (The Christian Science Monitor), Erik Larson is the bestselling author of eight critically acclaimed books, including The Splendid and the Vile, a chronicle of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz; In the Garden of Beasts, the story of the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany; The Devil in the White City, a history of the serial killer who stalked attendees of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago; and Dead Wake, the tale of the 1915 sinking of the RMS Lusitania. A former features writer for The Wall Street Journal and a contributing writer for Time magazine, he has contributed articles to The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Harper's, among other publications. In The Demon of Unrest, Larson delves into the five pivotal months preceding the Civil War to expose the controversies, crises, and personalities that led America into its bloodiest war. Erik Larson on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln, and the Path Leading Up to the Civil War's Beginnings in 1861

In his latest book The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War, Erik Larson—who I think is one of the best if not the best historical nonfiction writers there is—takes us back to the beginnings of the Civil War. In 1860, we see Abraham Lincoln elected president that November 6; Lincoln's own reaction to his election is “God help me. God help me.” Just five months later, it's April 12, 1861, a Friday; Larson writes that that day was destined to be the single-most consequential day in American history. It was that day, at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, that the Civil War began, a location Larson describes as a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor. In the leadup and path to the Civil War, Southern states were seceding one after another, and Lincoln was powerless to stop them. Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union when finally, on that day at Fort Sumter, a simmering crisis finally tore a deeply divided nation in two. In the months between his election and Fort Sumter, Lincoln is trying to keep the country together while dealing with betrayal in his own inner circle, attempting to avoid what would become the Civil War, beginning on that April day in 1861 and raging on until 1865, eventually killing 750,000 Americans. In this book, Larson draws on so much historical record—diaries, slave ledgers, plantation records, one of the most thrilling 600 pages I've ever read with not one page wasted. If you don't know who Erik Larson is, please change that immediately, although if you are a lover of nonfiction, I'm all but certain you know who this man is. He has written six national bestsellers—The Splendid and the Vile, The Devil in the White City, Dead Wake, Thunderstruck, In the Garden of Beasts, and Isaac's Storm—which have collectively sold more than 10 million copies. His books have covered topics ranging from the sinking of the Lusitania during World War I to Winston Churchill to an American ambassador in Hitler's Berlin to the United States' first serial killer, but in The Demon of Unrest, which is out today, April 30, Larson turns his gaze to Fort Sumter and the advent of the Civil War. Sit back and get ready to hear from someone who is a master at what he does.   The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War by Erik Larson

The book Dead Wake, The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson is a gripping account of the sinking of the British transatlantic luxury liner the Lusitania during World War 1.  Theodate Pope, the architect and owner of what is now the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut, who was a passenger on the Lusitania. Why did she sail on a British ship when Britain was at war? The ship was hit by a German submarine torpedo and sank within an hour. Why wasn't Pope in a lifeboat? Why did she jump from the ship into the water? And how did Pope survive and what were the after effects?   In this episode, author and historian Mary Donohue interviews Melanie Bourbeau, Senior Curator at the Hill-Stead Museum. Bourbeau shares Pope's first-hand accounts of the sinking and its aftermath from Pope's letters, telegrams, diaries, and newspaper accounts, many of which are in the museum's archives. After the war, it was revealed that the passenger ship was carrying 4 million rounds of machine-gun ammunition and other war time battlefront materials. Was the ship a legitimate target during wartime? This is an argument that continues today.  It certainly encouraged the United States to enter World War 1 though not immediately.   Read more about Theodate Pope Riddle in Bourbeau's article published in Connecticut Explored at https://www.ctexplored.org/communicating-with-the-spirits/ And listen to the accompanying Grating the Nutmeg podcast at https://gratingthenutmeg.libsyn.com/109-communicating-with-the-spirits-theodate-pope-riddle   Visit Hill-Stead Museum: www.hillstead.org   And read more about her family and home, now the Hill-Stead Museum from Connecticut Explored at: https://www.ctexplored.org/alfred-atmore-popes-art-collection-at-hill-stead-museum/ https://www.ctexplored.org/the-modernism-of-hill-steads-theodate-pope/ https://www.ctexplored.org/hill-stead-a-colonial-revival-performance/ https://www.ctexplored.org/site-lines-golf-at-hill-stead/   Fresh episodes of Grating the Nutmeg are brought to you every two weeks with support from our listeners. "It's a startling and disconcerting read that should make you think twice every time a friend of a friend offers you the opportunity of a lifetime.” —Erik Larson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dead Wake and bestselling author of Devil in the White City Think you can't get conned? Think again. The New York Times bestselling author of Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes explains how to spot the con before they spot you. “[An] excellent study of Con Artists, stories & the human need to believe” –Neil Gaiman, via Twitter A compelling investigation into the minds, motives, and methods of con artists—and the people who fall for their cons over and over again. While cheats and swindlers may be a dime a dozen, true conmen—the Bernie Madoffs, the Jim Bakkers, the Lance Armstrongs—are elegant, outsized personalities, artists of persuasion and exploiters of trust. How do they do it? Why are they successful? And what keeps us falling for it, over and over again? These are the questions that journalist and psychologist Maria Konnikova tackles in her mesmerizing new book. From multimillion-dollar Ponzi schemes to small-time frauds, Konnikova pulls together a selection of fascinating stories to demonstrate what all cons share in common, drawing on scientific, dramatic, and psychological perspectives. Insightful and gripping, the book brings readers into the world of the con, examining the relationship between artist and victim. The Confidence Game asks not only why we believe con artists, but also examines the very act of believing and how our sense of truth can be manipulated by those around us.

If Erik Larson writes the book, I read the book. It's one of my simple rules of life. All the more so when he writes about one of the most dramatic periods of history, the so called London blitz of 1940 and 1941 when Great Britain withstood aerial bombardment by Nazi Germany. Larson's latest book is The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz, published by Crown. Larson is also the number one New York Times bestselling author of two of my most memorable reads The Devil in the White City and also Dead Wake among other titles. If you're looking for an engrossing read during the coronavirus quarantine, I recommend this book. You'll be engrossed in the life and death struggle of a nation and its dynamic leader in their confrontation with Nazi tyranny. I read the book before the world stopped spinning, but recent events gave me a new perspective on the timeliness of this work and it even made me wonder about the role of religion or lack thereof in this and in that previous crisis. So that’s why we've invited Erik Larson to speak on Gospelbound. This episode of Gospelbound is brought to you by Southeastern Seminary. In a disenchanted world looking to themselves for answers, Southeastern’s three-year Doctor of Ministry in Faith and Culture plants graduates at the intersection of theology, culture, and church to bring the world a better story—the gospel. Charlie talks with the author of The Devil and the White City and Dead Wake about his brilliant new non-fiction book The Splendid and the Vile, which details the first year of Winston Churchill's prime ministry. They discuss not just Churchill, leadership, and the blitz but the similarities between fiction and non-fiction, how Erik picks a topic, how he found new materials on such a frequently researched topic, and how to bring history alive through the eyes of the real people who experienced it.

Math storyteller [Steven Strogatz](http://www.stevenstrogatz.com/) makes both calculus and dictation seem approachable and fun. #notkiddingJess, we learn, was told in an early math class not to give up her day job, and so she gave up on math—until she found [Steven Strogatz](http://www.stevenstrogatz.com/), whose writing puts a human, topical, understandable face on numbers from algebra to calculus, and glories in seeing “the math in everything”. If you’re the master of a topic that seems too narrow, academic or wonky for a larger audience, consider finding fresh ways into the subject—or “every way,” says Strogatz. If you can’t relate to one analogy, he’s ready with another, and it’s that willingness to try multiple ways to get his ideas across that’s made his work popular.Strogatz is a teacher first, writer second (now you know why he and Jess bond)---and he uses dictation to find his way into a more natural voice in his writing in the simplest way possible: he holds his phone up to his mouth while he walks the dog and talks into his notes app, the one where you just press the little microphone button on the iPhone.I’ve tried this (this is KJ) and it makes me crazy, because I struggle not to watch the words come out and correct them. For Strogatz, though, the opposite is true. “It helps me get around my OCD tendencies,” he says. “If I’m writing on a keyboard and see the words, my immediate instinct is to start deleting them.”#AmReading[Educated, Tara Westover](https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780399590504)[The Tangled Tree, David Quammen](https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781476776620) [Inheritance, Dani Shapiro](https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781524732714)[Dead Wake, Erik Larson](https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780307408877)#FaveIndieBookstoreSteven Strogatz's Fave is [Buffalo Street Books](https://www.buffalostreetbooks.com/) in Ithaca, NY. Erik Larson discusses his book, “In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin,” hosted by Richard Wolinsky, and first aired on July 21, 2011. As the Trump Administration continues through its second year, and as the threat of fascism grows, even as perhaps a noose is tightening around the regime's neck, there's a tendency to look back on the past, to see what we might learn and whether we can use that knowledge to cope with what's happening today. One of the decades that seems to have parallels to our own is the nineteen thirties, particularly in terms of the rise of Hitler in Germany, and I've noticed more than a few people I know personally have found books that maybe help them understand that era better. One of those books is Erik Larson's 2011 “In the Garden of Beasts,” which looks at the rise of Nazi Germany from the perspective of an American family, that of ambassador William Dodd. Erik Larson is the author of several non-fiction works, including The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and his most recent, Dead Wake, about the sinking of the Lusitania, in 2015. The interview covers two areas. The first is the creation of the book itself, along with some of the history of Nazi Germany. The second delves into whether the United States (remember, this was recorded in 2011) is on the precipice of similar events. It turns out that we may be a lot closer than Eric Larson felt then. In an e-mail sent on August 25, 2018, Eric Larson writes: “I find it interesting that readers are making their own allusions to Trump and our times. I've tried to avoid making connections, though increasingly I do feel there's a sinister resonance here, especially now that ICE seems inclined more and more to take on a Gestapo-esque role.” Erik Larson's next book will be published in early 2020. Photo on Radio Wolinsky page. U.S. Ambassador William Dodd sits in the upper left-hand corner of the photo (the only photo clearly showing both Dodd and Hitler in the archives).
