CC#41--Holy Earthquakes: Understanding Pope Francis in Four Books

FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessagePope Francis's recent passing marks the end of a transformative and deeply controversial 12-year pontificate that reshaped the Catholic Church in profound ways. What will be his ultimate legacy? Four essential books offer contrasting perspectives that help us understand the full picture.Austin Ivory's "The Great Reformer" and "Wounded Shepherd" present Francis as a spiritual director guiding the Church toward greater humility and mercy. The author describes Francis's impact as "like an earthquake...moving and shaking things up and in that shaking up, what will fall is what has to fall and what will rise up is a new era in the history of the church." This sympathetic view portrays Francis as a holy man committed to reforming Church structures while maintaining its spiritual essence. On the other side, Father Gerald Murray's "Calming the Storm" and Trent Horn's "Confusion in the Kingdom" critique what they see as progressive overreach during Francis's papacy. They argue that efforts to reach the "peripheries" and create a "field hospital" Church sometimes came at the expense of clear moral teaching. As Horn writes, "The liberal Catholicism I have critiqued in this book fails the people who need God and his church the most. It causes them to downplay the spiritual hazard of certain sins."These contrasting perspectives reflect the real divisions Francis's leadership created among Catholics worldwide. His reforms around marriage, synodality, and liturgy generated both passionate support and fierce resistance. Whether viewed as necessary modernization or dangerous accommodation to secular values, Francis undeniably leaves behind a Church grappling and confused with fundamental questions about its identity and mission. As we pray for the repose of Francis's soul during this traditional mourning period, we might remember that if there's one thing he would want to be remembered for, it's his emphasis on God's boundless mercy – a message that transcends the political and theological debates his papacy inspired. Correction:   I referenced "Pinochet as Argentina's leader," that is incorrect.  I meant to reference Jorge Rafael Videla which was the leader who overthrew the Peron govt in the 1970's during Argentinas "Dirty War" era.   My apologies.   Key points:• "The Great Reformer" by Austin Ivory traces Jorge Bergoglio's journey from Buenos Aires to the Vatican• Ivory's second book "Wounded Shepherd" offers a more nuanced view, comparing Francis's impact to an earthquake reshaping the Church• Father Gerald Murray's "Calming the Storm" critiques Francis's reforms for creating confusion rather than clarity• Trent Horn's "Confusion in the Kingdom" examines how progressive Catholicism is bringing harm to the Church• These books collectively reveal the tensions between mercy and doctrine, reform and tradition• The Francis pontificate leaves behind significant fault lines that will shape the Church's future directionPlease pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis and remember his emphasis on God's mercy for all sinners.Other resources:Substack written piece "A Papacy of Milestones and Confusion"Want to leave a review? The British government has taken steps to halt the prosecution of soldiers responsible for the deaths of civilians in Northern Ireland, most of whom had no connection to paramilitary activities. These killings were part of a ruthless dirty war that commenced in 1970 when Brigadier Frank Kitson, a counter-insurgency specialist, was sent to Northern Ireland. Kitson had spent decades in Britain's colonies refining old, and developing new, techniques which he applied in Northern Ireland. He became the architect of a clandestine war, waged against Nationalists while ignoring Loyalist atrocities. Kitson and his colleagues were responsible for: - The establishment of the clandestine Military Reaction Force (MRF) which carried out assassinations on the streets of Belfast of suspected IRA members; - They unleashed the most violent elements of the Parachute Regiment [1 Para] to terrorise Nationalist communities which, they adjudged, were providing support for the Official and Provisional IRA; - Spreading black propaganda designed to undermine Republican but not Loyalist paramilitary groups; - Deployed psychological warfare techniques, involving the torture of internees; - Sent Kitson's 'Private Army' - Support Company of 1 Para - to Derry where they perpetrated the Bloody Sunday massacre. The British Widgery and Saville inquiries did not hold Kitson and his elite troops accountable for Bloody Sunday. Kitson's Irish War lays bare the evidence they discounted: Kitson's role in the events leading up to and surrounding that massacre; evidence from a deserter from 1 Para who joined the IRA; a deceitful MI5 agent; a courageous whistle blower whom the British state tried to discredit, and much more, all of which points to a motive for the attack on the Bogside. Martin Dillon - Robert MaxwellFebruary 14Martin Dillon is an Irish author, journalist, and broadcaster. He has won international acclaim for his investigative reporting and non-fiction works on The Troubles, including his bestselling trilogy, The Shankill Butchers, The Dirty War and God and the Gun, about the Northern Ireland conflict.Entrepreneur, publisher and maverick, Robert Maxwell was a man who committed fraud on a global scale. A bully and a womaniser whose appetite for power and possessions knew no limits, he manipulated others to fulfil his own unsurpassed greed. With connections that stretched far beyond the City and Wall Street to the shadowy world of espionage and the conflicts of the Middle East, Maxwell was privy to some very dangerous secrets. Mossad, the famed Israeli intelligence agency, were observing him. Maxwell was becoming a liability and they decided that he had to be silenced. Forever. In this explosive account, investigative journalists Gordon Thomas and Martin Dillon reveal for the first time the secret plot to assassinate one of the world's most powerful businessmen. This is the real story of the billionaire's execution - the motivation, the planning, and the events of that cold night at sea when he met his fate- and of much else too sensitive to reveal in advance of publication. Drawing on interviews with Maxwell's family, former members of the Israeli security services and others, this book tells of the rise and fall of a man born into poverty who died at the height of his power and intrigue.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

The recent attempted assassination attempt on a SARS advocate and the still unsolved assassinations of liquidator Cloete Murray and his son who who had done work for SARS have shone the spotlight on the threats faced by SARS for going after organised criminals for tax evasion. In this interview with BizNews, SARS whistleblower Johann van Loggerenberg details the threats faced by investigators during his time at the Revenue Service. “It's either I'm going to bribe you, and if I can't bribe you, I'm going to threaten you. And if I can't threaten you, I'm going to make sure that you lose your job. And if I can't do that, then I'm going to hurt you or someone close to you. If I can't do that, and/or, I'll get rid of the evidence. And if that won't work, I'll kill you. And if that won't work, well, we'll just disassemble all of you. “Recalling the “fall” of the then enforcement component at SARS, he says: “We not only made enemies amongst criminals, but we made enemies amongst politicians, influential business people, organised criminals, organised criminal syndicates, and even people who were behaving or misbehaving or behaving badly among our friends in the criminal justice system and the intelligence service…” Van Loggerenberg says this is not a war that the country can afford to lose, and details the measures needed to fight it effectively.

Today's conversation is perhaps one of the most unusually important ones we have had on the podcast.  Len and Hwei-ru Tsou are two Taiwanese activists whose main commitment, over a period of decades, has been to discover and disclose the involvement of Asian and South Asian anti-fascists in the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War.  Not only do we discover their longstanding friendship with one of their first interviewees--Kenneth Graeber, father of celebrated anarchist David Graeber--but we also hear them linking their anti-fascist work to their pro-Palestine activism, which included their courageous participation in the flotillas protesting Israel's illegal blockade of Gaza. We hear Len and Hwei-ru draw the links between the anti-fascist struggle in Spain and the international movement for Palestinian rights. The conversation inspires and gives one hope about international solidarity in the past, and the present.Bios of Len Tsou and Hwei-Ru TsouWe are the authors of a book on the Chinese volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, in Chinese as well as in Spanish edition. Growing up in Taiwan, we came to the U.S. to pursue our graduate studies in natural sciences.  The new land provided us with space and resources for our curiosity in modern Chinese history and the cold war.  In 1973 a military coup overthrew the Chilean President Salvador Allende, a democratically elected Socialist.  It led us to pay attention to the America's Dirty Wars. After obtaining our PhDs in Chemistry, Len worked in semiconductor field and Hwei-Ru in pharmaceutical industry. We each published numerous scientific papers and patents in our respective fields. To serve as a bridge, we founded Cultural International in 1989 to introduce to Taiwan the experiences of American people's struggles in environment, labor and human rights. In 2002, we organized weekly peace vigil in Rockland County, NY, hoping to prevent the imminent war on Iraq from happening. The peace vigil continued for nine years. In 2011 Len joined the US Boat to Gaza challenging Israel's blockade on Gaza.  After moving to California, we join the San Jose weekly peace vigil to continue protesting the endless wars.   In 2001 our research result was published in Taiwan as a book 《橄欖桂冠的召喚:參加西班牙內戰的中國人(1936-1939)》.  A Spanish edition “Los Brigadistas Chinos en la Guerra Civil: La LLamada de España (1936-1939)” was published in Madrid in 2013.  The revised editions were published in Chinese as 《当世界年轻的时候:参加西班牙内战的中国人(1936-1939)》 in 2013 and 2015.  Our writings can be found in The Volunteers, Science & Society, South China Morning Post Magazine (南华早报), Southern Weekend (南方周末), China Times (中國時報), and others. Our collection of photos and documents of the Chinese volunteers resulted in the travelling photo exhibitions in Spain since 2019.  Based on our book, the Phoenix Satellite TV produced a documentary 《当世界年轻的时候——国际纵队里的中国人》in 2020.

If you understand the Operation Gladio program that NATO ran in Western Europe from the 1950s through the late 1970s, then you have a headstart in understanding Operation Condor in South America which happened during a 15-year period beginning in 1968. America's interests in South America created the justification in the eyes of Washington DC to exert its massive financial and military influence over the region in order to stop the potential spread of Communism, which never actually materialized. What did materialize was authoritarian anti-Communist dictators that America installed and controlled through its many tentacles, but this subversion program took on a new look when the Church was added to the decision-making process. This is Part II in a two part series on Alfonso Cuaron's 2018 masterpiece "Roma." This episode covers the second half of the movie and discusses themes of loneliness, isolation, and belonging. It also looks at struggles over land reform in the Mexican countryside, one of the primary instigators of the Dirty War. Finally it examines the 1971 Corpus Christi Massacre, a seminal moment in Mexican history. One of my favorite movies, I recommend giving it a watch before or after listening! The story of an indigenous housekeeper in 1970's Mexico City allows us to examine themes of Mexican history-class, race, status, violence, and more. As the Dirty War rages in the Mexican countryside, that violence starts to creep into the urban world and the personal life of the main character-Cleo. Both a personal and universal journey, the film is meant to be somewhat autobiographical account of director Alfonso Cuaron's early life in Mexico City. We begin w/ the Independent Cork Board Researchers Union Soccer Precepts, which bring us to a discussion of Maradona's "symbolic revenge" over the Brits w/ his infamous "Hand of God" handball goal in World Cup '86, which takes us 4 years further back to the possible Thatcherite-&-Argentine-military-junta false flag known as the Falklands War... To clear the field & set the stage, we unpack some basic history of Operation Condor & the American-backed intel agency collabs b/w military dictatorships in S. America in the '70s & '80s, which led to the extrajudicial death flights & disappearances of likely 100ks of Marxists, leftists, & union members in countries like Argentina (see: Dirty War)... We show how the US State Dep't & See-Aye-Eh were arms-deep in Argentine political life in the years immediately preceding Falklands. We survey a ton of the weirdness re: the Falklands War, including Julian Barnes' assertion it was the "worst reported" war of the televised era, which supports a false flag or preordained war of mutual benefit hypothesis... Marge Thatcher's press embargoes, conferences, & censorship. The strangely civil "Red Cross box"/ neutral zone in the sea off the Falkland Islands where UK & Argentina kept medical ships stationed simultaneously throughout the 70ish or so days. We discuss Declan Hill's The Fix & Gabriel Kuhn's Soccer vs. the State. We walk through the history of gambling, sports & otherwise, in England, from Queen Lizzie's Loco Lotto to the National Lotto's 2nd biggest donor, the Freemasonic United Lodge of England. This turns our attention to Voltaire & Casanova's Freemasonic Lotto Syndicates in France in the 18th century. And we conclude w/ a discussion of the distinct possibility that Sec. of State & national security tulpa Henry Kissinger—one of the architects of the bloody anticommunist conspiracy to bind together the intel services of Southern Cone countries & "disappear" leftists... anyways, we end w/ an examination of a couple articles & US Embassy & State Dep't memos that indicate that Sec. of Sports Fixing Kissinger may have been directly-or-indirectly involved in fixing the 1978 World Cup held in Argentina, when Gen. Videla & his Peruvian counterpart pressured the Peruvian nat'l team to deliberately lose to Argentina & the accompanying Satanic numerology of the game's scoreline—as well as a bevy of further 6s in accompanying stats. It discusses the makeup of different geurrilla groups during the conflict, and tries to articulate why they felt a violent movement was their only option remaining.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! We certainly cover a lot of ground in this week's episode.Kicking off ( pun definitely intended) with the retreat by Richard Turfitt on the draconian proposed restrictions on travelling Scottish football fans. The consultation document resulted in almost unanimous consensus in opposition right across the political spectrum. The decision by the Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain that it would “not be in the public interest to prosecute drug users” possessing drugs within a consumption room were one to be created." has also sparked surprising agreement among political parties with even the Scottish Tories supporting the ruling and the establishment of a pilot scheme in Glasgow. However Suella Braverman and the UK government seem set against the idea. Will this lead to a Scottish Tory rebellion? The Conservatives staved off a backbench revolt, led by Alok Sharma, on maintaining the ban on on-shore wind farm developments. However the latest auction of offshore licences proved a predictable disaster. One of several facing an increasingly chaotic UK government sailing in the face of expert and public opinion. This followed on from the report by the Commons International Development Committee on the unintended consequences of the Illegal Migration Act,which we explore. There has also been vehement and complete opposition to the Northern Ireland Troubles Legacy and Reconciliation Act from all Northern Ireland's political parties, the Irish government, victims' families and civic groups. Is the act a cover up for the so called "Dirty War"?Meanwhile there's trouble at t'mill or at least the TUC Congress 2023 with Unite leading the campaign for Labour not to roll back on workers rights and public ownership. The level of trust in an incoming Labour government might be judged by the motion passed calling for employment law to be devolved to Scotland. However, it does appear from all that's coming out of Labour HQ that all this has fallen on Blairite deaf ears.If you're interested in the "Break Up of Britain" conference memtioned by Lesley you can find out more and book tickets herehttps://thebreakupofbritain.net/https://www.tickettailor.com/events/thebreakupofbritain/936799All this plus reports back on Lesley's Thrive tour, house sitting adventures, and Pat's technical demands. ★ Support this podcast ★

What caused the Mexican Dirty War? A combination of economic, social, and political grievances built up over the course of hundreds of years to finally explode in the mid-20th century. The geurrilla warfare and the brutal counter-insurgent response from the government during the Dirty War had their roots in historical grievances and narratives that motivated ordinary people in Mexico through decades and centuries. This episode is Part III in a series on the Mexican Dirty War. It discusses some of the economic and social causes of the dirty war, the economics of dissatisfaction among the peasant class in Mexico, and the history of land reform in the 1900's, as well as the brutal nature of counter-insurgency and the unclear legacy of the Dirty War.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! How does the broader context of history affect our personal lives on a daily basis? How does historical memory and narrative storytelling change the way we view the past and the present? This episode asks these questions in the context of the Mexican Dirty War by analyzing the conflict through the lens of the broader themes of Mexican history. Although history may be in the past, it's ghost lingers in the present.   This episode is Part II in a series on the Mexican Dirty War. It gives a brief history of Mexico from the 1500's on-from the Spanish conquest, to colonialism, to revolution, to attempts at reform and democracy. It also looks at the key impact of the 1910 Mexican Revolution on history and the Dirty War. Summary: ¡Bienvenido a Argentina! In our fifth and final stop of the Summer Jetset Series, Holly and Devin spend some time in South America enjoying books set in Argentina. They both agree that South America is underrepresented in books for both their wheelhouses and advocate for readers to seek out books from the continent purposefully, especially in translation. The use of magical elements across genres and the horrors of Argentine history are key for novels from the country and they both agree if available, Holly and Devin would literally and metaphorically travel to Argentina again. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:34): Holly discussed Death Going Down by María Angélica Bosco, a 1950s whodunnit that begins with a young man stumbling home drunkenly in the wee hours of the morning to find a beautiful young woman in the elevator up to his apartment - dead. From there, detectives delve into the mystery of the victim and her death as well as the colorful lives of the building residents. Holly's key takeaways were: Bosco's style is reminiscent of Agatha Christie or the Nancy Drew series; there's a large cast of characters in the building that act as suspects and each has their own secrets and motives. Unlike Louise Penny, the novel focuses less on the detectives and much more on the residents of the building - all of whom Holly enjoyed greatly. This book brought a strong sense of history and its place in time. Written in 1954, “Death Going Down” includes the fallout from WWII and the European (and nazi) escaping to Argentina and other South American countries. There's a sense of suspicion around certain characters depending on where they're from originally.  The novel lacks a strong sense of place and the reader shouldn't expect to get a very good feel of Argentina as a whole. The focus remains on the apartment building and its residents, similar to the TV show “Only Murders in the Building.” The Heart (16:34): Devin discussed Hades, Argentina by Daniel Loedel, an Orpheus retelling set during the Dirty War of Argentina, specifically 1976. Tomás Orilla is a young medical student in Buenos Aires who has been in love with his childhood friend Isabella for years. As tensions increase between the Argentinian government and young insurgents fighting the oppressive regime, Tomás does all he can to prove his love to Isabella until he's forced to flee the country for New York City, living as Thomas Shore for a decade. But can he ever truly leave behind Isabelle and what he did in ‘76? As Orpheus descended into hell to retrieve Eurydice, so too Tomás entered the underworld to save Isabelle and make peace with his choices. A magical realism ghost story, Loedel blurs the lines between modern reality and ghosts interacting with our protagonist. Usually this is to good effect, but occasionally leaves the reader confused about which world we're in. Tomas and almost every character in the book are plagued by guilt and shame over what they did to survive during the Dirty War. There are also descriptions of what many of those acts were, including torture and sexual violence. Please use caution as there are *trigger warnings* for the novel.  Loedel treats young love as simultaneously foolish and a force so powerful it brings back the dead. “Hades, Argentina” explores the extent to which someone will sacrifice their self-hood for love and how unrequited love can impact the trajectory of a person. Rudy joins Adela Cedillo, co-editor of Challenging Authoritarianism in Mexico Revolutionary Struggles and the Dirty War, 1964-1982, and author of several studies on the Mexican dirty war such as El Fuego y El Silencio, Historia de las Fuerzas de Liberación Nacional Mexicanas (1969-1974), for a conversation on this period of history. We discuss the mixed legacy of the Mexican revolution, the state of the left after the progressive presidency of Lazaro Cárdenas, the two periods in Mexican insurrectionism: before and after the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre and how the left responded to this event. We continue by discussing the origins of the Frente de Liberación Nacional (FLN), how its strategy evolved, and how it laid the base for the Zapatistas. We finish by briefly discussing how the Zapatistas are different from their predecessors and how the dirty war slowly evolved into the drug war.

The Mexican Dirty War was fought from the 1960's into the 1980's between the Mexican government and geurrilla insurgents. Geurrilla warfare and government counter-insurgency would be a reality of life in many parts of Mexico for years-thousands would lose their lives, families and communities would be destroyed, and grief would linger for generations. This episode is Part I in a series on the Mexican Dirty War. It gives an overview of the conflict, analyzes the nature of geurrilla warfare in terms of it's impact on community and family, and discusses the way that history and collective memory impact the present.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Summary Noah Hurowitz (Twitter; LinkedIn) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss infamous drug kingpin El Chapo. A weak link in his cybersecurity set-up would help bring him down.  What You'll Learn Intelligence El Chapo's internal surveillance operation The cartel's use of cryptography to keep communications covert How cybersecurity enabled then brought down El Chapo The role of the infamous DFS – a corrupt and now disbanded intelligence agency Reflections Technology – early adopters vs. counter responders The changing nature of crime enabled by emerging technologies – spyware, drones, etc. And much, much more… Episode Notes Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo (shorty) because of his 5-foot 6-inch frame, was called by one of the agents chasing him, “the godfather of the drug world.” So, how did a low-level drug dealer from a provincial state rise to try and subvert the Mexican government to his will? What was the intelligence game that played out with regards to El Chapo? How did the cartels use spytech, tradecraft and cybersecurity to stay one step ahead of the law? How was he caught? To answer these questions and more, Andrew sat down with Noah Horowitz who covered the trial of El Chapo in Brooklyn for Rolling Stone magazine. Noah is also the author of the recent book El Chapo, and his work has appeared in the Village Voice, the Baffler and New York Magazine.  And… In the El Chapo trial, question No.57 asked prospective jurors, “Are you familiar with Jesus Malverde?” If you are not familiar with this angel of the poor (el ángel de los pobres) as well as the Sinaloan narcos (el narcosantón), then you can find out why this question would be relevant here, here, here and here. Quote of the Week "So, in addition to encrypted communications…he was also installing spyware on Blackberry devices that El Chapo was giving out to his lieutenants and his girlfriends and his wives. And then EL Chapo was able to use this, the spyware program to see what was on their phones. He was able to see their text messages. He was able to see their locations. He was even able to remotely activate their mic and listen to them. And he loved that…it was like a toy to him almost. He became obsessed with it." – Noah Hurowitz Resources Headline Resource El Chapo, N.
