What if recruitment agency growth didn't mean adding headcount?Helen Yarrow has spent over 30 years in recruitment—and for most of it, she felt like she was falling short of the industry's definition of success. Why? Because she never scaled a big team.Despite launching her business 14 years ago and building a strong reputation in the B2B events space, she carried a sense that staying solo meant she hadn't really “made it”.That belief stayed with her until her 50s.This week on The RAG Podcast, Helen shares how she finally let go of the pressure to scale, and found clarity in building a business that fits her life—not someone else's idea of success. In this episode, we cover:- Her journey from Rec2Rec into B2B events recruitment- The realities of raising a family while running a business- The turning point that helped her stop chasing a model that didn't feel right- Why staying solo might actually be the most powerful decision you can makeIf you've ever questioned whether bigger really means better, this one will resonate.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Helen Yarrow and Jackson Barnes02:58 Helen's Journey into Recruitment06:02 Career Progression and Challenges in Recruitment09:11 Transitioning to Motherhood and Work-Life Balance11:51 Establishing Jackson Barnes and Finding Clarity15:07 The Shift to Conference and B2B Events Recruitment17:52 The Role of Conference Producers20:55 Building a Business Around Family Life24:00 Reflections on Success and Team Building34:51 Redefining Success in Business37:12 The Journey of Solo Entrepreneurship39:34 Reflections on Parenting and Work-Life Balance42:57 The Importance of Self-Awareness45:00 Navigating Parenting Challenges50:20 The Impact of COVID-19 on Business54:58 Finding Fulfillment in Work01:01:12 Marketing as a Game Changer01:03:43 Advice for Women in Recruitment01:07:52 The Importance of Open Communication in the Workplace__________________________________________Episode Sponsor: UntappedUntapped is THE market leader and go-to agency for finding and hiring tried-and-tested offshore talent into UK, US and Australian-based recruitment companies. They're providing top-class TEAMMATES, NOT OUTSOURCES! Building a scalable recruitment business that operates seamlessly even without recruiters' direct involvement should not be just a dream—but a tangible goal. Balraj's achievement with Envision Education serves as a testament to what can be accomplished through strategic planning and execution. Today's episode explores how recruiters can build high-performing teams and a scalable business with a special guest, Balraj Guraya. As the founder and director of Envision Education, Balraj has not only grown the company into a high-performing team of 23 individuals but also strategically positioned himself to focus solely on scaling the business by replacing himself in the hands-on role in 2022 Tune in to gain valuable insights from Balraj's unique approach and what's working and not in building a scalable business that can thrive even when the founder isn't in the driver's seat. Episode Outline And Highlights [01:46] Why Balraj got into recruitment and started Envision Education [05:20] How Balraj began his business and how things worked in the first year [08:07] The biggest challenges Balraj encountered before building a team [12:04] The key milestones of growing a team from 2 to 23 people [15:06] How to structure the interview process and get the right people onboard [22:37] Ways to structure your team and create an excellent candidate journey [20:45] Steps to building a recruitment business that runs without you [33:20] What contributes to creating a high-energy environment [44:23] How to hire right and create a smooth transition into your culture [48:28] The key to building successful business partnerships with Rec2Rec [55:42] What candidate's journey is all about, and how it works [59:11] How to design, roll out, and improve processes for scale [01:02:04] Tip to conquer staff turnover and self-doubt as a business owner How to Become a Manager and a Leader and Build Confidence in Your Effectiveness During our discussion, Balraj and I discussed his recruitment strategies at Envision Education. Founded in 2014, Envision Education addresses staffing shortages in Primary, Secondary, and Special Schools across London and the home counties. Balraj's vision has led Envision Education to become a high-performing team of 23 individuals. His journey includes transitioning from a hands-on role as a builder in 2022 to focus on scaling the business. Balraj shares six key principles for recruiters aspiring to become effective managers and leaders in their business. Self-motivation: As a recruiter, Balraj shares that you have to be very self-motivated and have the drive, energy, and focus to grow your business in the beginning to build a strong foundation for growth and expansion. Be consistent: Balraj emphasizes maintaining a steady workflow and understanding that success takes time and effort. It's not going to be an overnight achievement. So be consistent, produce the right quality and quantity of activity, and stay motivated. Willingness to make mistakes: Recruitment takes work. It takes resilience, courage, and a willingness to put yourself out there, try uncomfortable things, make mistakes, and embrace them as learning opportunities. Get the right people on board: Balraj emphasizes the pivotal role of team composition in driving success. He explains the importance of recruiting people who align with the company's values and attributes and possess the necessary skills to contribute meaningfully to the team's objectives. Having the right people on board is a game changer. It's the difference between success and failure. Structure your team: Structuring allows individuals to maximize their strengths and enhance overall performance. According to Balraj, structuring your team will help the team keep up and improve your turnover. Coaching and development. Balraj highlights the importance of ongoing coaching and development in building a great team. Rather than solely focusing on placements, he emphasizes sharing knowledge and nurturing talent within the organization. Ultimately, running a business transcends mere profitability; it represents a journey of personal development and collective growth—the continuous evolution of oneself and the team. Steps to Building a Recruitment Business That Runs Without You Balraj shares invaluable insights into transitioning a recruitment business from a one-person 360 operation to a structured departmental setup, effectively replacing oneself in key roles. The key to this evolution lies in making strategic and sometimes costly decisions, recognizing that letting go of control is essential for scalability. Central to this process is: Finding some key people you can trust: Find people you can trust, people who treat your business as more than just a job and are excited about helping your business succeed. They are the backbone of your business, embodying a commitment to its success beyond personal gain. Have some high performers who you are consistently billing. Nurturing a cadre of high performers is critical for sustaining momentum and driving growth. These individuals excel in their roles and embody the energy and drive necessary to propel the business forward, even in the absence of its founder. Design a structured, clear career ladder: According to Balraj, this is one of the best things you can do within your business as a recruiter. Designing and implementing a structured career ladder from the outset provides clarity and direction for employees within the organization. The framework creates professional development and instills a sense of purpose and belonging among the team. Create a high-energy environment: Creating a vibrant, high-energy environment is key to enhancing engagement and cohesion within the team. Balraj emphasizes the need for regular team briefs and goal-setting sessions to align everyone with the company's vision and objectives. Appreciation: Show appreciation not just to the sales team making the placements but to everyone, including the compliance team and the resource team. They are important in the work they do. Appreciation for all reinforces the value of every team member's contribution. Work on what is most important: Balraj's "4 Ds" approach—Do, Defer, Delegate, Delete—provides a framework for delegating tasks and freeing up time to focus on strategic initiatives. Investing in the sales team and expanding recruitment consultant roles are essential steps before relinquishing direct involvement in day-to-day operations. Develop processes: designing and implementing processes is indispensable for scalability. Balraj advocates for hiring or partnering with individuals possessing complementary operations skills to ensure the efficient execution of tasks and the seamless functioning of the business. Scaling a recruitment business beyond the founder's requires strategic planning, delegation, talent cultivation, and process optimization. Embracing these principles paves the way for scale, sustainable growth, and long-term success. I cannot stress enough how bad of an idea running a recruitment firm without sales or recruitment experience is. There is a reason why headhunter fees are 20-35%. It's because this ISN'T an easy pop-in and win business. It takes expertise, experience, perseverance, cleverness, will-to-win, investment of time, and ingenuity to sustainably succeed. If you're one of the very rare exceptions to the rule, bravo for you. But the majority of people would be well off to heed my advice on this: You don't want to learn and earn on your own dime - do it on someone else's. This business is very challenging and you can't just pick it up from the womb - this is a taught and learned business. For questions/Comments - reach dandan@dgrecruit.com Enjoying this podcast? Recruitment Journeys: The Podcast Series (from Mint Recruitment)
For as long as I can remember, there's always been a bit of a morbid fascination with what I do within the Recruitment Industry, namely Rec2Rec. So why not get over 50 years of R2R experience together, on the same podcast, and lift the lid on what we do? On this episode of “Recruitment Journeys”, we have a bit of a special one… I'm simply calling this “The Rec2Rec Special”. Joining me in this chat is Grace Marlin in New York, James Vizor in London and Charlie Bell in Melbourne, and I ask why the hell they entered such a notoriously difficult recruitment sector in the first place… Why they love the R2R space… How they coped through the barren Covid months… What they think we can do better as a Rec2Rec community! And much more! Hope you enjoy “The Rec2Rec Special”…
As someone who started off knowing nothing about recruitment, I started selling and recruiting since it was my job that I was responsible to do. Here are the top tips of what helped me "make it" as a top-biller to set my career up for success in my market and within a large recruitment firm to make a name for myself. I hope these 5 tips help you get ahead in your career - send me your wins, challenges, and questions to contact@dgrecruit.com For coaching options, join: Recruiterprep.com dgrecruit.com/dgrcommunity patreon.com/dandanzhu
If you are thinking of hiring someone who already has agency recruitment experience, you have to proceed with caution because 80-90% of the industry leave the job and the turnover is bonkers. You don't want to be the sucker who ends up hiring someone from another agency and wastes your money, time, and effort on someone who fails at your firm before they hop off to their next gig. This has happened too many times to even the best of managers and producers simply because you want to believe in the goodness and motivation that people should have. Listen to this episode to figure out how to assess experienced agency recruiters to see if they're the right fit to move to your agency. For consultations with Dandan and Grace to help you assess each potential hire and/or get trained up on interviewing recruiters for your agency, reach contact@dgrecruit.com for rates and our packages available.
As someone very good with money, Dandan was able to leverage it fully to achieve FIRE by 28, breaking 7 figures networth by 30. Here are the major tips that Dandan implemented in her 20s and now to avoid being entrapped in a bad job, mortgage enslavement, and lack of freedom to build a life you want for the rewards you aspire to have. Do you have any tips? Comments? Share & hit us up! contact@dgrecruit.com
Yes, I say "deal" here because I don't enjoy working with active candidates as a choice or preference; we need to DEAL with the fact that they're already active. This poses a real threat to our time, our energy, and ultimately our survival in this industry if we let one too many active candidates get under our skin. The ideal goal is to work with the best passive candidates exclusively, but that's increasingly rare today, so you have to deal with what you got. Here are some tips on how to handle the active candidates and manage your own expectations and approach in the process!! It's not pretty but it's the truth. #r2r #rec2rec #recruiter #recruiters #headhunter #headhunters #recruiterlife
To sustain a long term career within agency recruitment, you have to navigate the inevitable stress that builds up from this career of managing PEOPLE on both ends of the spectrum: clients AND candidates. While this job sounds so straightforward and easy, it is hardly anything but that! You have to manage your mental health in order to continue feeling great about the business, money, candidates, clients, your market, and your career. Hear 5 top tips Dandan shares that she reminds herself of everyday in order to continue persevering, building, and moving forward with agency recruitment as a career. #r2r #rec2rec #headhunter #sales #recruiters #recruiter #headhunters #recruiterlife #agencyrecruitment #recruit #recruiting
For lack of a better way to put it, if you're a young gun trying to make it staffing/agency recruiting/headhunting to get new clients signed up, for the love of everything that's holy, DO NOT SELL TO HR PEOPLE. If you didn't know, please do know this: They are NOT your friend. They are NOT on your side. They do not CARE about you/your livelihood and they'll get in the way. The only person you should be building relationships with are the HIRING MANAGERS IN YOUR CHOSEN FIELD OF SPECIALISM. These are the golden gooses. These are your actual clients. Find them, build relationships with them, and have them GET YOU IN THERE.
Amanda breaks down top tips to help you better: - Assess clients & candidates - Manage your mindset - Learn her approach through her experiences of thriving despite pandemics and recessions Ultimately, Amanda brings her unique approach to growing her business, practice, and team; leverage her words of wisdom and mentorship! There are undisputable benefits to working candidate-dry aka candidate-driven markets. It's way easier to dominate a space as a niche market specialist, you have less competition when you're more knowledgeable, and you're faster when you have deep relationships with top candidates and clients in your market specialism. Clients want your service, NEED your service, and are happy to pay top dollar in fees and candidate salaries because candidates are so hard to come by. Here's how you can judge if the market forces in your business are working for you or not. Pls rate us and/or reach out to contact@dgrecruit.com for questions and comments!

Today I was joined by James, the Founder & Director of Rule Recruitment, a well known Rec2Rec business headquartered in Wimbledon, South West London. In this episode we talked about his personal experience of lockdown and how the market is showing really promising signs at the moment, going from 5 interviews on the board 3 weeks ago, to 40 on the board today! Most notably, James talked about the fact that the recruiters he has dealt with appear to be ready to get back to the office. Working from home has it's perks but his experience suggests that many prefer the office as it helps them bond closer with colleagues and have clear divide between work and family life. It certainly is going to be an interesting few months for the employees of our sector and James is here to help, please reach out to ask any questions if you are looking to hire again or unsure about your current future: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesvizor/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesvizor/) -------------- If you're interested in investment for your recruitment agency, visit: https://riserv.co.uk/ (https://www.riserv.co.uk/?utm_source=buzzsprout&utm_medium=organic-buzzsprout&utm_campaign=rag-sponsorship) --------------- If you're looking for a video interviewing platform for your agency... the best option in the industry today is Odro! Today I was joined by Craig, Founder & Director of Big Fish Recruitment - a London based R2R with a strong background in agency recruitment across sector. In this episode we talked about the reality of being on lockdown as a solo recruiter, how his clients are still hiring and the fact he has closed 2 deals inside this period of madness! Craig is an optimistic guy with a great attitude and I loved his approach to the situation! He has been helping clients by running webinars and giving up all of his time to support recruiters who are worried for their future. He did also hint to positive signs across his client base as more roles are beginning to emerge! Kate has worked across the industry for many years as both a trainer and Rec2Rec, in this time experiencing many ups and downs. Whilst she agrees that this is unprecedented times, she still shares the belief that learning and development should not stop during this pandemic! In this episode we talked specifically about how leaders and managers can develop their people whilst working remotely and Kate gave some practical examples of how to execute this successfully. Why do recruiters need a Rec2Rec? Surely recruiters can find recruitment jobs of their own? Well that is the question that I addressed with two experienced Rec2Rec specialists based in Singapore Justine Bower, Managing Director at Intuitive Recruitment and Adam Campbell, Director of Paddington Partners. This cast is split into two parts. In Part One, Justine Bower, Intuitive Recruitment shares what the benefits are to using a rec2rec specialist and what recruiters are looking for in a partner in their search to move roles. She will share her insights on what roles are in demand and in short supply across the region and why and what differentiates an average recruiter from an exceptional one and what to do take your career to another level. She’ll share her thoughts on the current challenges heads of recruitment firms are facing right now and in what ways companies are addressing remote working to retain their top talent and much more. In Part Two, Adam Campbell, Paddington Partners shares how recruitment firms are becoming leaner and more agile than they were in the past. He’ll share his observations of how some recruitment leaders are shifting towards a more hands-on selling role versus the internal development route and why this shift has arisen. For the researchers or 270 consultants listening to the show, he will impart his expert opinion on how to progress your career further. Lastly, he’ll share what commission structures are available in Singapore from large players to the more boutique and what some companies are doing to attract and retain the best talent in the market.

As the premier Rec2Rec in the USA and certainly increasing our capability internationally, we represent an every-increasing list of UK recruitment firms that recognize - we know best when it comes to growing in the USA. Having worked at a large British firm that was very successful in the US, I know what it takes to build a successful firm here and what costs are required to build the right team in the USA. Many recruitment firms coming from the UK with no context or network that really understands the US are in for a NASTY surprise. The US, while littered with gold, is also littered with the failures of British firms that couldn't maximize the awesome opportunity that is the USA. Make sure you choose wisely your next step.
>This week I'm joined by two young entrepreneurs, Ben Hickey & Joshua Surtees. These guys have recently secured funding for their very own Rec2Rec business, Aquired. However they have every intention in becoming innovators within the Recruitment space ... As they look to build a successful recruitment business by combining traditional recruitment methods with the power of marketing. The both of them have some really interesting views on how agencies train their staff and what the future within recruitment looks like. Two school friends to now building their very own recruitment business, I love stories like this!
Today I'm joined by Shayne Wilson who started his very own Rec2Rec business just 7 months ago. Shayne spent 3 years working as the head of talent for a digital marketing Recruitment business before he decided to take the leap. In one year he actually interviewed 126 Recruiters which he all sourced himself! This was the lightbulb moment to start his very own Rec2Rec business ... In this conversation we discuss how Shayne sourced 126 recruits himself and the power of an employer brand …. You can connect with Shayne on Linkedin & Twitter; https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaynewilson/ https://twitter.com/Shwilly01
Today I'm joined by Dualta Doherty who has been in Recruitment for over 7 years and for the last 3 years he has been running his very own Rec2Rec business with his wife. It all started with just the both of them in a serviced apartment based in Central America, after cashing in their first few invoices they then moved to the UK and grew their team. They now help 360 agency recruiters move internationally including locations such as the USA, Asia, Australia, Dubai, New Zealand and Ireland… In this conversation we discuss the amazing story behind Dualta starting his own recruitment business and the challenges recruiters face when relocating to a brand new firm abroad. You can connect with Dualta on Linkedin; https://www.linkedin.com/in/dualtadohertyr2r/
In my career, I messed up by not being well-networked and in position for the right opportunities to leverage my accomplishments in the best ways. As headhunters, we are insulated in our own groups and cliques. We're told NOT to network. We're bred to think ill of other firms. The reality is, we need to network just like our candidates do! Here are some valuable pieces of advice on counteroffers if you're having regrets or feeling torn or whether or not to join the new company who's trying to woo you!
In this weeks episode of the 'Renegade Recruiter Unleashed' podcast. Craig Watson gives his views on the industry... In Craigs words... " I ‘fell' into recruitment in 1994, when I was in the UK (gap year as a backpacking teacher, but that's another story…). Over the journey I have recruited & managed across various sectors, and three continents – Australia, Europe and Asia. Most of my professional networks include Recruitment Consultants, Managers and Owners, so it made perfect sense to take the leap of faith firstly into Rec2Rec – and now as a Consultant and Trainer to the industry… and I love it!"
