In how many jobs can you say data saved a life? Research and analytics in healthcare are starting to catch up on the vast amount of available or unused data. There's also the development of strategies and technologies to gather data from their patients' EHRs and import external information that could fill in blanks in their social determinants of health. In this episode of Straight Outta Health IT, Rachini Moosavi, Vice President of Enterprise Analytics at UNC Health, talks about the value of health and environmental data and how their insights can drive transformation in healthcare for better outcomes. Christopher brings to the table the issue of access to quality care, another challenge related to social determinants of health for many patients. He reads an excerpt from a Wellesley Institute document on how healthcare institutions must build health equity throughout care planning, delivery, and investment that specifically address disadvantaged populations or key access barriers. Rachini mentions the importance of equity and inclusion groups to ensure that the processes, technology, and people working in a health system are doing their best for every patient. She also believes it is vital for the medical workforce to be representative of the communities it serves. Rachini explains how at UNC Health, data is gathered with an understanding of social determinants of health and how acknowledging them can positively impact outcomes. Its leaders believe in the power of data, enabling its research community with it. They are interested in ensuring that all their entities are supported and that the people and processes in their workforce have the required information to be successful. She speaks of the implementation of UNC Health's EHR and the construction of a robust data warehouse that allows them to do better research. After COVID, she also realized how sharing data dashboards across health systems can help data-driven leaders to do more. Rachini began her career interested in the clinical side of healthcare, but after some time, she found a home in healthcare data and analytics. She shares how, for her, a career is a journey with twists, turns, and several stops where one finds their passion. Kassim Hussein, Head of Enterprise Analytics at Cleveland Clinic London, shares how he overcame an internal skills shortage to set up the clinic's data and analytics function When Kassim Hussein was offered the chance to build the analytics function for US-based hospital group Cleveland Clinic's new UK arm, he jumped at the opportunity. As Head of Enterprise Analytics at Cleveland Clinic London, he'd gain leadership experience while sinking his teeth into an exciting new challenge. “I realized this is a chance to start a new healthcare system, from scratch, in London,” Hussein recalls. “You're not going to get this opportunity many times in your life!” But as Hussein says in this week's Business of Data podcast episode, the COVID-19 pandemic created unexpected challenges as he set to work establishing the new data and analytics unit. Overcoming a Skills Shortage with Vendor Support Cleveland Clinic is a US-based hospital group that also specializes in medical research. Its outpatient center was opened in Marylebone in September. This will be followed by a 184-bed hospital next year. Before the center could open its doors, one of Hussein's first priorities was to set up an enterprise data warehouse (EDW). This would help the organization capture key strategic data sources in one governed location that would also feed self-service analytics tools. Hussein says working virtually with different vendors was a challenge. But he also says doing so was essential to address the limited resources his team had in-house. “Because of GDPR, we had to build our own processes, working with vendors to make sure we have the right capabilities from day one,” he recalls. “Remember, I joined the team virtually and this came with many challenges. I was lucky that we had a big project support team (based in Cleveland, USA) and some contractors. But finding the right local skills was the biggest challenge.” “We use [e-health cloud-based software] Epic for our medical records management system,” Hussein continues. “It's an American tool. So, only a few healthcare providers use it in the UK. Finding someone with the standard BI skills and experience plus knowledge about Epic is near impossible.” “Because of the nature of our situation, one has to get their hands dirty to cover the internal skills gap,” Hussein adds. “It's a bit of a hybrid role, right now. So, I have to do SQL scripting [and] Tableau visualizations. I'm leading big meetings with stakeholders, but I'm loving it.” “If we want to make London more attractive to BI analysts, we would have to invest in training and development,” Hussein adds. “The analysts also need to be interested in upskilling themselves.” Next Steps for Analytics at Cleveland Clinic London With the hospital's basic analytics systems up and running, Hussein says the next step is laying the foundations Cleveland Clinic London will need to branch out into AI and machine learning. “The data quality has to be really accurate; if we want to build models, the data has to be fit for purpose,” Hussein says. “We want to understand the data lineage and we need a genuine u

In part 2 of our interview with Abhi Seth, he tells us that part of his role is to really drive scale for analytics across the ten businesses within TE. We learn how the adoption of analytics is enabled throughout the organization and a big component of that is driving, understanding and building capability within the Centre of Excellence (COE). He says the first 90 days in the COE is about building capability and being able to have experts in data science, cloud, dev ops, ML Ops, data visualization, user experience, storytelling, and data engineering. Abhi says his focus is now on building a small COE team within each of the businesses and moving to a “hub & spoke” model as the analytical maturity of the organisation improves. Abhi goes on to tell us about how he creates and enables “seed teams'' and how it's important to ensure the problems you're solving are creating value for the company and are tied to a strategy. He also says you should have a committed executive sponsor. This podcast interview focuses on the approach to product innovation to grow remarkable momentum in enterprise software by creating a swell that keeps building because of bottom-up user demand. My guest is Rick Hall, CEO of AginityRick Hall is a software entrepreneur focused on the analytics market. He has led the development of over a dozen software products and taken several companies from the early stage to an eventual sale.He founded Kairn Corporation in 2018 to help organizations, plan and implement intelligent products and systems. Together with his co-founders he have defined a "Pathway to Intelligent Systems." to guide companies on their journey. In support of this journey they begun to invest in companies that will simplify the process of building and implementing analytical programs. That has led to the purchase of Aginity in March of 2020 where Rick has taken over the CEO role as a result. Aginity was an early innovator in Analytics Management. They are on a mission reinventing the Analytics Engine Room and with that do with the challenges of complex architectures which are dependent on highly skilled engineers, frequently cost millions of dollars, and are not flexible to move at the pace of business. This inspired me, and hence I invited Rick to my podcast. We explore what’s broken in the world of Enterprise Analytics and why the millions and millions of investments underdeliver. We dig into the effects of switching to a product-led growth approach, and how creating a community of fans helps drive multiple X growth with a minimal marketing budget. Last but not least we talk about the secrets to staying resourceful – and resilient for anything that’s next to come. Here are some of his quotes:I think the three key areas of a SaaS company are Sales, Marketing, and Product and Engineering. Product and Engineering is a natural tension. So, I always say that if the two heads of those two groups don't kind of love each other and hate each other, then there's something wrong. Because product is about the idea of anything that I could do - big ideas. And engineering is about the world of the possible. And there's a tension built in there. And then sales is the third piece of that, because sales and marketing is about the demands of the customer. And so, putting the three things together in a world of what I like to think of as constructive conflict is really, really key. I think that is probably one of the most important elements of success for a company.During this interview, you will learn four things:That real value unlocks when you realize it’s not about solving a users’ task in isolation, but about how they effectively collaborate with the business How introducing a freemium model is not about giving away your software, but about creating software that users loveHow to convince even the most stubborn C-level decision makers about the value of your product even if they’d never use itWhy to succeed in SaaS is about constantly evolving the interplay between a big vision and what people can actually achieve on a stretched goal. For more information about the guest from this week:Rick HallAginity Website See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In our final episode of the year, we reveal the results from our very own Word of the Year survey of communicators. Dino Delic, Meltwater's director of enterprise analytics and insights, joins us for that conversation and then goes on to highlight how purpose-driven some of the biggest and best-known brands have been in their pandemic-era communications. And for the Red Questionnaire segment, we chat with Bukola Garry, Havas' manager of diversity and inclusion, about how to make strides toward eradicating racism after this tumultuous year. She also tells us what she considers to be an emotional superpower, and shares the personal mantra that keeps her invigorated for life—spoiler alert: it's a great one.   Quotes: “To me, the word that would describe [2020] is backlash. It's a negative word. So I don't love it for that sense, because I do think of myself as a little bit more hopeful and optimistic about 2021… But backlash to me, of course, has been political backlash about governments not doing the right thing with COVID, or doing things too strongly, or not enforcing things. … But when a company or a corporation or a brand was involved in a backlash and not a political figure, it was usually because they were trying to do something that they felt like was the right thing to do.” —Dino Delic, Director of Enterprise Analytics and Insights, Meltwater “There is so much pressure on companies to do the right thing, and the right thing is so subjective.” —Dino Delic, Director of Enterprise Analytics and Insights, Meltwater “First and foremost, I would say authenticity [is required of brands who navigate successfully through a crisis]. If they're doing it just to address a challenge, or if they're doing it to avoid a backlash, or if they are doing it just because they think that that's what people want, that's when they've typically gotten themselves into trouble.” —Dino Delic, Director of Enterprise Analytics and Insights, Meltwater “In an effort to try to help customers navigate through this tricky concept of injecting purpose into a brand, we try to take what is squishy or qualitative and make it quantifiable and measure the things that are typically subjective. And we found, like other times when we've developed metrics like this, it's entirely possible to do so.” —Dino Delic, Director of Enterprise Analytics and Insights, Meltwater “There's a great quote that says, ‘When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.' And I just think that the temptation with uncomfortable conversations or topics is to try and push past them. Like we try and flick a switch or move on to something you know. But in reality, there are people that are constantly being retraumatized and made to feel less than … The reality of racism is just that it's a reality. And until we're all triggered by it, I think real change is still so far away.” —Bukola Garry, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, Havas “There have recently been more moments and moments in time when we were having to check into our humanity… so many opportunities for us to really do some self-reflection, to ask ourselves, ‘How do I be more of an ally? How do I be more of a supporter, and how do I kind of recognize and validate, and learn about experiences that are different from my own?'” —Bukola Garry, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, Havas   Connect with Red Havas: Follow Red Havas for a daily dose of comms news:  - Twitter - Facebook - Instagram - LinkedIn Subscribe: Don't forget to subscribe to the show using your favorite podcasting app. - iTunes - Spotify What Did You Love? Griffiths has a long history of leadership as a health IT executive and his passion is firmly rooted in actionable health care intelligence that brings innovation and change to the increasingly complex health ecosystem. Griffiths uses his experience in the health industry to assist providers as they push to improve practices to value-based care. Griffith believes it is important to treat people, not symptoms, and this care philosophy is the cornerstone of his work. Griffiths has many years experience in the health industry, most recently with Optum, but before his tenure there he was the director of healthcare informatics at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. Griffiths holds a BS in Mathematics and Statistics from St. Olaf College, an MS in Biostatistics from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in Health Services Research, Policy, and Administration from the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities. Griffiths provides an overview of Optum, a health services company within United Health Group. He explains the various divisions of Optum and its main branches: Optum Health, Optum Rx, and Optum Insight. As Griffith explains, Optum provides health services across the entire health care system. Their health branch assists individuals and families, helping them attain the high-quality care they deserve, as well as assisting with the management of their prescriptions and health care finances. And Optum works with industry organizations, health plans, and providers as well, tackling the many and diverse challenges in modern healthcare. Their OptumRx branch acts as a pharmacy care services company that seeks to improve and maximize efficiency in pharmacy benefit management. The Optum system allows doctors to make informed decisions, staying current on all the latest developments. And their Data and Analytics branch utilizes the latest groundbreaking technology in artificial intelligence including natural language processing, machine learning, and neural networks to tailor healthcare solutions for specific needs. Optum essentially helps to transform hard data into insights. Griffiths refers to their data analytics as Optum IQ, as that is the center of the intelligence that drives all of their businesses, through the use of data, analytics, and expertise—all supported by technology.  The technology guru delves into the applied spaces that they see AI advancing, across the spectrum of healthcare industry entities. He discusses the predictive nature of technology that may direct a course of action, such as identifying diabetes patients sooner, predicting possible opioid usage, predicting probabilities for heart failure, and more, essentially assisting doctors, helping to provide a clearer, fuller picture of patients' health profiles. Additionally, Griffith adds, the data can provide for more efficiency in the overall healthcare process as well, which helps everyone to get the care that they need faster. Griffiths outlines the specifics of using AI to additionally verify patient information and identity, to ensure safety by helping to avoid human error in records and processing, etc. The AI healthcare technology expert talks about the future advances that are coming in the industry as the tech develops further. From advances within cloud services to clinical programs and clinical prediction of disease, prediction of future costs, and more, the many possibilities for improved care are exciting and Griffith expects Optum to be at the center of innovation within the industry.

Jennie Carlson is the Executive and Chief Human Resource officer at US Bancorp.  They are the 5th largest bank in the US, with 67,000 employees.  Jennie has been with the company for 15 years and able to provide valuable insight in this week's podcast. The HR department has a pyramid of shared services.  The normal HR functions such as payroll, employee relations, and recruiting are along the baseline. As the pyramid climbs higher, talent development, advancement opportunities are the focus.  At the very top, the message of how US Bancorp can use people and talent to drive the strategy of the organization cascades down and drives the actions of the entire department.  Other topics this can include are organizational design and fostering a great employee experience to lead to a great customer experience. The role of HR has evolved over the past few years.  The department has seen a shift from an ‘order taker’ mode to become strategic partners that help set the corporate strategy and the organizational design. Employee experience is a huge focal point.  This can include technology, flexible work arrangements, and employee engagement.  Jennie shares how US Bancorp uses engagement surveys from their employees, which they use as a marker for continuous improvement.  Traditional HR Metrics include employee engagement, as well as, other topics such as retention and exit interviews. Moving forward, US Bancorp is moving their analytics team from HR to strategy.  This allows data to be pulled from the same sources, but it is being looked at differently, from the lens of the customer analytics department.  Jennie believes that analytics should be deciphered in the best suited department.  Companies that have larger marketing and customer analytics departments may be able to provide newer insights than smaller HR departments can.  This can allow cornerstones of data, like the employee survey, to be drilled down as much as possible.  Another area is making sure they are keeping in line with their ethical culture.  The future of analytics also allows for characteristic and trend tracking in many employees.  Keeping ahead of trends allows companies to gain a full picture of what is going on inside their company, allowing them to continuously improve to create a better organization.
