She works with fat folx, LGBTQIA+ community, grief/loss, fertility struggles and pregnancy loss, relationship challenges, family dynamics - these are all near and dear to her. She has been serving clients as a professional counselor for 12 years, working with a variety of settings and concerns. She works from a person-centered approach, using humor, mindfulness, and acceptance as tools of healing and transformation. She believes in the need to broaden our view from seeing individual struggles as collective, moving towards solutions that foster interdependence and equity. She approaches counseling as a co-creation, and considers her role to be an insightful companion through the process. She trusts the inherent wholeness of each individual. I have specific training in Expressive Arts Therapy, which utilizes art-making as therapeutic.  Lisa is strongly anti-diet and diet-culture. She is involved in the fat liberation movement. And it's impossible to talk about body politics without talking about racism, misogyny, and ableism. She is anti-capitalist, and anti-racist. She loves animals and spent years before becoming a therapist working with animals. She believes current social and economic structures have stripped our sense of community and our emotional experiences have been villainized and pathologized to the point that mental health is a growing challenge. She thinks it's a disservice to focus only on individual health without also addressing community. She does not believe in the paternalistic dynamic that she has seen in the mental health world, and she thinks to do my work well she has to be continually learning. * Fawn McCool (she/her pronouns), is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a private practice based in Portland, Oregon. Her therapeutic approach is warm, nurturing, collaborative, engaged, and nerdy. She loves brain science so there MIGHT be some mention of neural plasticity or blaming of neural pathways along the way. She will shame the patriarchy, never you. As an LCSW, she has worked in a variety of settings providing skilled trauma-informed services to families, women and children. She offers clinical therapeutic services in Tigard, OR and enjoys working with a wide variety of issues including but not limited to: trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, perinatal/postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, infant loss, and fertility issues . Imagine: If you could hear what a prophetic tree had to say, would you share what the tree was telling you? If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? If you could become an animal, what animal would you be? 'Yomumuli and the Talking Tree' is a creation story that has been passed down for generations. There are many different versions. The one you are hearing is a combination of two: one by Yaqui leader Anselmo Valencia and the other by Yaqui temasti Lucas Chaves. The Yaqui, or Yoeme, are Indigenous peoples whose homelands include the Río Yaqui valley in Sonora, Mexico, and the area below the Gila River in Arizona, Southwestern United States. They also have communities in Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico. Yoemem (also known as the Yaqui Nation) believe they descend from a tribe called the Surem. About today's storyteller: Mexican of Yoeme/Basque heritage, performer, choreographer, and instructor living in Toronto, Norma Papalotl Araiza works in different modalities within the arts blending dance, theatre, vocals, percussion, and text with cultural and traditional themes in a contemporary context. Norma has studied with international artists such as Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Natsu Nakajima, Tascabile di Bergamo, Kei Takei, Pol Pelletier, among others. Norma is the co-artistic director of Vanguardia Dance Projects, a collective promoting Latin American and Indigenous dance artists. She holds a Master's Degree in Dance Ethnology from York University and graduated from the Expressive Arts Therapy Program at CREATE Institute. She has a private practice as an Expressive Arts Therapist. Her work has been presented at different venues in Toronto, throughout Ontario, Montreal, Hungary, California, Rochester, NY, New York City, Colombia and throughout Mexico. Draw and share... Justice In Action

Mental health clinicians are often reluctant to treat people who have intellectual and developmental differences (IDDs) for fear of doing something that could worsen rather than improve the client's condition. In this episode  of Justice in Action, two JRI clinicians, Dr. Jacquelyn Kraps, Metrowest Area Director and Clinical Director of Outpatient Services, and Bailey McCombs, Licensed Metal Health Counselor and Expressive Arts Therapist, talk about the rewards and challenges of working with children with a range of differences, from autism spectrum disorder to chromosomal differences, cognitive challenges, and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Kraps and McCombs have helped establish the Developmental Differences Specialty Team to assist other JRI therapists to work effectively with clients with both IDDs and mental health needs, including complex trauma. Services for those individuals have long been siloed because they have been seen as separate and distinct. JRI is breaking new ground by having a single provider address the entirety of the client's service needs. Treating clients with both complex trauma and IDDs draw heavily on a therapist's creativity, flexibility, and powers of observation, Dr. Kraps and McComb say. Sometimes it requires teasing out which problems are caused by trauma and which are part of the individual's developmental difference. They advise other clinicians to be curious, open, and willing to say the wrong thing. If an approach doesn't work, they can always shift course.  Sometimes a client — especially a non-verbal client — can communicate most successfully by writing, drawing, or moving their body. Individuals with IDDs deserve effective treatment for mental health needs, which they are at least as likely to experience as the rest of the community, and they can enjoy positive, healthier outcomes with the right therapeutic approach. For more information, visit jri.org. A note about language: IDD often stands for intellectual and development disabilities. JRI choses to use the word differences instead of disabilities to be as inclusive as possible, and honors that each individual and family get to decide how they identify.

Ms Geetha Mani - an English Trainer by profession. I am also a certified Expressive Arts Therapist. I strongly believe that every individual, irrespective of gender, community, religion, disability, can achieve maximum potential if they are willing to let go of their fears and explore life to the fullest. I have written a book on this theme called “Unbox Yourself. I started Vyuthpathi Trust in 2013. I ran a free tuition centre in Kannagi Nagar slum, Thoraipakkam for 4 years. I later closed it down due to financial constraints. In moments of crisis, like Covid-19 & lockdown, I think ordinary citizens should come forward to help others in society. We should not wait for government authorities, politicians or religious leaders to take action. We should do what we can. Even a small help can make a great difference in the lives of the poor/downtrodden. That's why when the first lockdown was extended I jumped into action. I touched base with all my school & college friends through Facebook and started collecting funds. I used these funds to buy groceries for the slum people, construction workers…anybody who was in need. Till date, we have distributed groceries (rice, dal, sugar, pulses, oil etc.) to the tune of Rs 3,24,302 and counting. I hope to continue this work for another 6 months at least to help the people tide over the immense financial trauma they underwent because of the continuous lockdowns in the last 3 months. #GetInspiredWithManjalvanamPodcast #StayTunedWithGK Manjal Vanam believes Social media plays essential role to spread the requirement of the needy, So that we can work coloboratively towards volunteering and contribution. Homesteady - Stories of homesteading farming hunting and fishing

What do you think about when you hear, "The Rat Race?" On this episode of Homesteady, we will explore the idea of the "rat race." What is it? And, most importantly, how do you escape it? We will explore these ideas, and give you some steps on how to escape it and live your idea of your ideal life. The term "the rat race" finds its origins in a series of experiments where rats, motivated first by hunger, and then by avoiding pain (behaviorism's operant and classical conditioning for you fellow psychology enthusiasts out there) develop patterns of repetitive behavior based upon the ease or difficulty of attaining the goal set up by the experiment. When we say, "I want to escape the rat race, buy a homestead, and move out to the country," how do we do it? In order to escape the rat race, we need to understand it. Using the aforementioned experiment as a guide, there are essentially four elements to the rat race: The rat The race The stress The reward Let's break down each piece. The Rat. There is scientific proof that humans and rats, despite our obvious physical difference, have a lot in common. (Did you know rats laugh when tickled? Check it out.) Rats have empathy, a sense of humor and fun, and they are able to think about thinking. If we go directly back to our rats in the experiment, these are rats that did not self-select to be lab rats, who were motivated by their stressors to find a solution that relieves their stressors. Sound relatable? We often find ourselves, as humans, in lifestyles we did not choose, being motivated by our own stressors of feeding our families or escaping a painful situation. Unlike the rat, however, we are able to make a plan to change our lives. The Race. What is this race, and how did we enter? What were your dreams when you were in middle school? How about high school? Are you on a path of following your dreams as they have evolved, or have you found yourself placed in a lifestyle that feels like an unnatural fit? What about each part of your lifestyle: does your commute, how you spend your workday, and how your breakdown of hours, work for you? Lastly, are you working to achieve your own goals, or are you advancing someone else's plan? Often, people work long hard hours at jobs they hate, to earn money to buy things they don't need, to impress people they don't like. — Nigel Marsh The Stress. What do we do if we find ourselves acting like a stressed out rat? We often begin our journey by wanting to take care of our families and fulfill our basic needs. Humans do need to eat, and as adults, we often find ourselves with older or younger family members to take care of. However, as we satisfy our basic needs, we often find our need for "more" growing. We stop feeling satisfied by fulfilling our needs for food and shelter and begin to accumulate more materialistic needs for "more." Also, how, like the rats, are we motivated to learn behaviors to avoid pain? Often the pain we want to avoid is psychological as opposed to physical. When we have the "right" jobs and possessions, we do not need to feel the pain of others showing skepticism or disappointment in our choices. Feeling like a "success" is a strong motivator for keeping up with others. We are also often motivated by debt. We go into debt to buy the things we don't need, and are motivated by keeping up with payments to avoid the pain of falling behind financially. The Reward. What is the reward? How do we know when we have found the reward in our own lives? In the rat race, we often find a ladder of career promotions that come with greater efforts and earnings. With more success in a traditional corporate career path, we see individuals with beautiful cars, bigger homes, and more social influence. However, there is always a "next" on this path to happiness. Whatever level of achievement we reach, there will always be a nicer car, a bigger house, or more money. But what if we are just trying to stay away from the "shocks" of life? We live paycheck to paycheck, just getting by, staying ahead, paying our debts. Why did we even sign up for this? Mostly, because public school has taught us to do this, all of our lives. We learned to work for rewards, to do what others told us to do, and the feel the "shocks" of grades. Don't despair! You CAN get out of the rat race. Unlike rats, we can make a difference in our own lives. TODAY: Tell yourself, "I will NOT be a lab rat. I have control over my OWN life." Regardless of your work and life circumstances today, you are able to take steps to develop your own path in life. RECOGNIZE Your own Rat Race. Once you realize what your own "rat race" is, evaluate what works, what doesn't work, and what needs to change. Write down what needs to change, and hold yourself accountable to finding an exit strategy. Maybe this book will help? Avoid Stress. The most common stressor we all share? Debt. Avoid debt if at all possible. Dave Ramsey's book can assist you in evaluating your financial choices. If we avoid debt and save money, we will feel more satiated. Redefine the Reward. Is the reward buying things? If you are stuck in a cycle of buying things in order to satiate your appetite, try to decide what would satiate it instead. More free time? More social time? What about more time with your family? Know that this takes time, and start to develop an exit strategy. Make a Vision Board like Alexia the Suburban Escapee, who is an Expressive Arts Therapist (and who is writing this now because she has DROPPED OUT of the rat race), uses to keep her eye on her reward. I first encountered Stephen Levine through his writing. In particular his book, Poiesis: The  Language of Psychology and The Speech of the Soul, which I began reading in the summer of 2004, before I started the Expressive Therapies graduate program at Lesley University. If you have noticed the name of my blog and my podcast, you can see that this book, along with Steve's chapters in the book Principles and Practices of Expressive Therapies, made just a wee bit of an impression on me. While I was at Lesley, Steve was not faculty there, and I only encountered him once in a brief workshop on creative process. I remember thinking that the way he talked reminded me of Christopher Walken. I now know Steve is a Brooklyn boy. Maybe there’s a connection? A quick google search reveals that Christopher Walken grew up worlds apart, in Queens. In any case, Steve’s accomplishments are too numerous to cover here. Briefly though, he is the Paul Celan Chair of Philosopy and Poetics in the Arts, Health, and Society Division at The European Graduate School in Switzerland. He is also the Dean of the Doctoral Program in Expressive Arts there. He along with his wife, Ellen Levine, founded THE CREATE INSTITUTE in Toronto, in 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy, and another in anthropology. He is a trained psychotherapist and Expressive Arts Therapist. He has authored numerous books, and is a passionate social/political activist. I was both thrilled and terrified when he agreed to be on my podcast. I felt as though I had wandered into a dragon’s den. As it turned out, the dragon was exceptionally kind hearted and down to earth.  In this episode, we cover a lot. Steve shares some of the stories and numerous pearls of wisdom from his poietic life journey. I can't help but feel we only scratched the surface. There are a couple of glitches with the sound, but over all it does not interfere, or matter so much, as we settle into our conversation. There is one point around the 20 minute mark where my audio freaks out and goes into skip mode. You might notice a quality change in the microphones I'm using after that.  I didn't edit this out because I feel like the discussion around this part is an important part of the conversation. So listen in as Steve shares stories on everything from:       -  his involvement with Students for a Democratic Society     -  his thoughts on social political critique     -  the meaning and practice of poiesis     -  therapeutic presence     -  approaching art-making     -  the history of philosophy and Heidegger and more...
