She previously served on the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) Working Group.  Kristen has authored a number of publications around the value of sustainability and ESG disclosure and assurance. She was #10 on the 2020 Top 100 Corporate Social Responsibility Influence Leaders list. Kristen has more than 25 years of experience with Deloitte, beginning her career in Deloitte's Audit and Advisory Services, working in Deloitte's National Office in several capacities, and working with the deputy CEO of Deloitte LLP focused on regulatory and public policy matters. Kristen completed the Berkeley Law Executive Education Certification: ESG: Navigating the Board's Role.  Kristen also serves as a member of the Eureka College Board of Trustees and the Financial Women's Association. Kristen lives in Greenwich, CT, with her three year old daughter. Kristen Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The role of assurance professionals in ESG The future of comparability of data across the industry - a building blocks approach The shift in approach to ESG toward integration Where we are in transformational change in business Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals  Kristen's Final Five Questions Responses What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I love this question. As I reflect on my journey and the fact that I didn't come to this space with an expertise or an ESG education, I always encourage professionals no matter where they are in their career to really look at, in a traditional corporate context as an example, where is that discipline that you align with? For me it was accounting. Whether it's marketing or operations, finance or legal, complementing a traditional discipline within an organization to really bring that depth and a perspective of the way ESG or sustainability overlays to bring a differentiated perspective to that discipline. We've seen that this “ESG expert” doesn't really exist per se, because we know that ESG performance and priority areas are so broad and diverse. So, bringing that perspective to an existing discipline within an organization is that tool, that effective way to help an organization drive integration within all parts of the business.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? The momentum, the energy, the passion that we're seeing by not the usual suspects in the market. For those of us who have been working in this space for a long time, the commitment and energy that we're seeing from within organizations. It's not just the sustainability team; it's the finance teams, operations, the supply chain, the talent teams that are all really engaging and driving this momentum. And then naturally, it's a reflection of where the market is headed more broadly, but I would say very simply that the momentum and the recognition that ESG is not a fading movement; it's really here to stay and it's going to become increasingly central to companies. It's the license to operate and the license to grow. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? It's hard to choose, but the first is Accountable: The Rise of Citizen Capitalism. It's a great book that came out not too long ago. Michael O'Leary creates and provides some practical examples of the way that the capital markets are evolving and the way in which ESG is so central to strategy. I've also always been a fan of John Mackey. Conscious Capitalism and Conscious Leadership are two of his books that provide great perspective and examples for those participating in this space at different levels of maturity. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? This will likely come as no surprise. While it's not super sexy, looking to the developments in the whole standards landscape. The largely voluntary standards today - standards and frameworks - there's a tremendous amount of guidance and practical tools that are provided for public use that really help translate these concepts into actionable business priorities, and really help guide companies along this journey toward preparedness for greater scrutiny. The work that that we do is naturally grounded in standards, and the value of a number of these resources is somewhat underplayed given that there's a wealth of accessible information out there.   Making a career change at 50 isn't something you should do on a whim. It takes planning and savvy networking to create the right encore career in the non-profit sector. Our guest on this podcast, Betsy Werley, of Encore.org, made such a transition to an encore career to the not-for-profit world herself after a successful business career. And she's helped many people make smart transitions to second careers. We discuss with Betsy: What led her to pursue an encore career in the non-profit sector Why the missions of The Transition Network and Encore.org attracted her What the transition was like coming from the corporate arena into the non-profit world The benefits - and challenges  - of  second act careers How volunteering helps pave the way The biggest obstacle many people face in landing the right non-profit role Her advice for people considering a move into a non-profit encore career What resources people should tap into when considering a career in the non-profit sector Betsy joins us from New York City. _____________________________________ Bio Betsy Werley is Encore.org’s Director, Network Expansion. She has dedicated this phase of her career to building the encore movement and making later life a time of opportunity and contribution. Betsy moved to the nonprofit sector in 2005, as The Transition Network’s first Executive Director. She led that organization through a growth phase from one chapter to 12. Her encore transition was profiled in Marc Freedman’s The Big Shift and Kerry Hannon’s What’s Next?  In her Transition Network role, she was a founding member of Coming of Age New York City and the Encore Network Steering Committee. Betsy joined Encore.org in 2013 as an Innovation Fellow, expanding connections between Encore.org and on-the-ground programs in the US and around the world. Betsy spent the first 26 years of her career as a corporate lawyer and a business executive at JPMorgan Chase. She served as a long-time board member and President of the Financial Women’s Association, and in 2002, launched a mentoring program for Baruch College undergraduate women business majors. In 2017 she received Baruch’s Community Partner Award for her leadership of that program. Betsy has also been honored as the 2019 recipient of the PSS Impact Award for Leadership in Positive Aging.  Betsy is frequently quoted by the media and invited to speak on issues related to older adults as assets in society. _______________________________________ Wise Quotes   On Networking "I think people should always be aware - and people should always think life is long and thee people around me now are people with whom I want to maintain a positive relationship with. And to know that at some point they would think of you if they are looking for something - and you would think of them. And sometimes, I think people don't realize how big a network they have already. So your dentist is in your network. Your doorman is in your network. That guy who sells you your car is in your network. So with that specific message of 'Here's what I'm looking for', those are all networks that you can tap. So I think one challenge for a lot of people is that they are shy about leveraging their networks and saying to people, just for the heck of it,'I hear something, I wonder if you have any advice for me. So really talking to people and learning how to leverage the networks that they actually have. It's pretty diverse."   On Volunteering "You can certainly start out getting involved in volunteering in Board work while you are continuing to do your day job. In fact, I strongly recommend that to anyone I talk to as they're looking ahead at a future career in the non-profit sector - so they can make connections. Tthey can build credibility, they can learn what they like and what they don't like. And that will stand them in good stead at a time when perhaps they can afford to transition to the non...

In her system, Transform Your Performance, she speak of an empowering mindset, a body conscious presence, distinctive uniqueness and effective action.  When you have all of these, you can be an effective leader, both in dance, and in business.   A very large part of her teaching and coaching involves helping women be visible, and empowers them to be able to speak up and contribute, by exploring all facets including positioning, energy levels and .  She also delves into the subconscious mind, where 95%+ of our behaviour comes from. Regina has a book called  Speak up, Stand up and Shine which contains 26 tools that help anyone show up with more power.    Regina shares her life experience which has taken her from her native small town in Germany, to Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Brazil, and now speaks 5 languages (5 ½ if she is in Italy!  :-)).  Throughout all of these moves, dance was always an important part of her work.   She shares stories of the bureaucracy surrounding having a business abroad, and the challenges she faced. She is now back in Munich after having a less than pleasant experience with a business partnership in Brazil.   She attributes this devastating event as a trigger for an amazing mindset shift, and ultimately the program she has created which encompasses all of her life experience.   She has aim to visit Africa in the near future, and has developed some contacts there.  She would eventually like to teach and speak there and make use of the many languages she has learned.      Regina shares her message here: As powerful leaders, we women can make a bigger impact and generate more wealth for our companies, clients, and ourselves. We must access our full potential to become effective and respected leaders. This requires focusing on an empowering mindset and a compelling, confident presence, enabling us to accelerate our business and career, while making an outstanding contribution to our communities. We all benefit when we have more female leaders: as individuals and as a society. I personally believe that world peace ultimately depends on whether we achieve more balance of yin and yang. Women Rocking Wall Street - A podcast dedicated to women in financial services

WRW024: Making Connections with Maureen Adolf   Welcome back, and I hope you’re feeling happy, healthy and inspired. On this week’s episode of Women Rocking Wall Street, I’m thrilled to introduce Maureen Adolf, who’s an expert in government relations and pubic [CH1] policy. She’s also president of the Financial Women’s Association, a New York-based organization dedicated to accelerating women’s careers in the finance industry.   FWA recently conducted some very interesting research around the value of women’s internal networks at various firms. (Check out the full report here). Among the most compelling findings: 39% of respondents said they believe women’s internal networks could contribute to their reason for staying with their current firms. Internal networks have the power to make women feel like their firms are more invested in their wellbeing, which in turn fosters loyalty. On this episode, we’ll dive into the research and best practices for internal networking groups.   If you’ve been thinking about joining a group for women in finance, there’s no time like the present. (Here’s how you can apply for a membership with the Financial Women’s Association.) And as far as internal networks go, don’t be afraid to explore them—even if you aren’t a senior member of your company.  Many times, internal networking groups are formed organically at the lower level, or through HR. And these groups are in demand: According to the report, 77% of respondents who work at firms without a WIN said they would join if their organization had one.   If you are a decision maker for an existing WIN, consider meeting during the workday to accommodate busy schedules and demands at home. Almost half of those surveyed (41%) said time was a reason for not participating.   Check out the full episode for more information about how to get involved, and for Maureen’s insights on the industry. And if you like the episode, please be sure to share with friends!  [CH1]It says on LinkedIn that she worked at Nelson Brown until May. Wasn’t sure if there is a new position to add

Sharon Allen's lecture was presented on February 19, 2008. Throughout the 20th century, the talent management model for businesses evolved to become known as the "career ladder," in which employees would continually proceed upward until they reached their maximum potential. Such a paradigm became entrenched as the post-World War II population surge of Baby Boomers ensured a ready supply of entry-level applicants eager to achieve upward career mobility. Today's workplace, however, faces a dilemma. The populations of Generations X and Y will be insufficient in numbers to fill the positions that will be left behind when today's Baby Boomers retire and leave the workplace. Such a reality calls for a new talent management model. Sharon Allen will discuss an exciting new innovation in career planning from Deloitte that will hold profound implications for every generation active in today's workforce — and tomorrow's. Sharon L. Allen is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP (D&T USA). In this capacity, she is responsible for the governance of an organization with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and oversees the firm’s relationships with a number of major multinational clients. With more than 30 years of audit and consulting experience, Allen was elected as chairman of the board in 2003. Her re-election in 2007 was the latest achievement in a career of distinguished business leadership. She currently serves on the President’s Export Council and is a member of the Women’s Leadership Board at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Her responsibilities and influence extend beyond her U.S. leadership roles. She is a member of the Global Board of Directors of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, where she serves as the U.S. representative on the Global Governance Committee and chairs the Global Risk Management Committee. A frequent speaker on governance, diversity, ethics, and workplace issues, Allen has addressed such prestigious forums as Fortune Boardroom Reports, Forbes Executive Women’s Forum, The City Club of Cleveland, the Dallas Friday Group, and the UN Economic Development Fund. She also has addressed major business schools including those at Cornell, Notre Dame, Duke, the University of Illinois, the University of Southern California, and MIT. Allen has been honored for her contributions to business and community leadership. She has been twice-named to the Forbes list of “the 100 most powerful women in the worl.” In 2007, Directorship named her “one of the 100 most influential people in corporate governance” and Crain’s NY Business cited her as one of the most powerful business women in New York. In 2006, she was named Private Sector Woman of the Year by the Financial Women’s Association. She is a past designee as one of the “50 Women to Watch” by The Wall Street Journal and a “Woman of the Year” of the New York City Police Athletic League. She’s also earned the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Business Leader Award, and serves as a board member of the national board of the YMCA, The Autry National Center, and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Allen holds an honorary doctorate in Administrative Science from her alma mater, the University of Idaho.
