Recently, an independent evaluation was conducted on Foodstuff's trial of facial recognition technology in their security system at 25 of their outlets in the North Island. The evaluation found that using facial recognition in security cameras reduced crime and harmful behaviour at foodstuffs outlets by 16%, based on an examination of 1742 facial recognition alerts for repeat offenders. However, there were also 9 instances were customers were misidentified as offenders by the system, with one woman who was wrongly removed from a Pak'n'save launching a case againsts facial recognition technology with the Human Rights Review Tribunal, claiming that the technology was discriminatory. Oto spoke to Guhan Gunasekara, an Associate Professor of Commercial Law at the Univeristy of Auckland, to discuss the implications of facial recognition technology at retail outlets, and what we can expect in the aftermath of the independent evaluation into the trial.
A competition lawyer says it'll be very unlikely Foodstuff's appeal will succeed. The Commerce Commission declined its merger of its North and South Island arms- saying it would lessen grocery competition and hurt suppliers. Foodstuffs North Islands chief executive, Chris Quin, says the change would actually make it easier for suppliers. Lawyer Neil Anderson says it's unlikely a case like this will go to court, with even less chance of winning. "The commercial parties, by the time they've been through a clearance process and then are faced with an appeal process - they'll push it out a further six months, it's quite unusual for a deal to survive that." The Commerce Commission is pushing out its timeline for approving the Foodstuffs merger, due to "unresolved issues". It now expects to reach a decision in October. The North and South Island co-operatives - which run the Pak'nSave, New World and Four Square supermarkets - sought clearance to merge last year. Foodstuff's North Island Chief Executive Chris Quin told Heather du Plessis-Allan “We knew this could happen, but we remain committed that this is the right thing to do.” LISTEN ABOVE. Foodstuff's introduction of facial recognition technology —with the hope of reducing repeat criminal offenders— has the Privacy Commissioner concerned. The grocery chain is trialling facial scanning in its North Island stores across the next six months. Commissioner Michael Webster told Kerre Woodham that facial recognition isn't a proven tool to reduce harmful behaviour in supermarkets. He says it could be even riskier, as the technology could provide people with a false sense of security. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When I went for my Nuffield interview I was waiting to go in and spoke VERY briefly to a gentleman with a splendiferous moustache! I was instantly hooked in what he does, we arranged a podcast and pretty rapidly I realised, “Christ it'll be awkward if one of us isn't successful!” However, 7 weeks down the line, we both were! Our guest today is David Tavernor! David has worked in buying for various supermarkets and now owns his own insect farming business, Fly2Feed! He speaks about the potential of insects as a protein source for people directly and for livestock feed as well as a fertiliser. His Nuffield scholarship will explore insects as a livestock feed the world over and hopefully be able to implement it back home as well as with his own business! Enjoy!

Ethiopia's Ministry of Finance has issued a directive allowing importers of essential foodstuffs to use franco-Valuta privileges without waiting for foreign exchange permits and import their items directly through the Customs Commission. The Ministry says that Ethiopians in the diaspora are calling on the government to expedite Franco Valuta's licenses by taking into account the current inflation and in order to allow more Ethiopians living abroad to play their part. The Ministry says that to comply with a letter dated 20 December 2020 by the Ministry of Finance with regard to taxation implementation, the implementation of the directive allowing Franco-Valuta privileges will be closely monitored by the concerned parties.

The president's decision also bans importation of frozen meat products.

Sealord's chief executive Doug Paulin told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's nothing personal and that Foodstuff's North Island are looking to implement similar measures across other categories. “This is something they're doing across both of their banners, Pak'n'Save and New World, and across all categories.
