What's behind the rise and rise of low alcohol and alcohol free drinks? The sector grew by a quarter last year alone, fuelled by our changing relationship with alcohol. More than fifteen million people are thought to have considered taking part in Dry January this year and younger drinkers in particular are turning away from alcohol and embracing alcohol-free versions of beer, wine and spirits or entirely new drinks coming onto the market.In this programme Jaega Wise considers the changes in the drinks industry. She eavesdrops on an alcohol-free workshop with the mindful drinking movement Club Soda and speaks to its founder Laura Willoughby. She hears from the alcohol-free beer brand Lucky Saint and the market research company Kam on our changing drinking patterns, including the trend for zebra-striping - alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.Then Jaega visits Bristol to find out how breweries are using different techniques to make alcohol-free beer that is far superior to the much-derided watery and flavourless versions of old. The Bristol Beer Factory tells her that their alcohol-free brand now makes up a fifth of sales. Luke Boase launched Lucky Saint in 2018, but he says the brand's potential for an iconic future has always been top of mind. As the leading dedicated non-alcoholic beer brand in the U.K., Lucky Saint is sold in over 10,000 points of distribution in the country, including more than 1,000 pubs and restaurants. That number includes its own bar in London, aptly named The Lucky Saint, which operates at the base of a building that also houses the company's office. Last year, the company raised a £10m Series A round that included funding from VC firm JamJar Investments. Led by a mission to become “the world's defining alcohol-free brand,” Lucky Saint is resonating with both sober consumers and moderate drinkers, according to Luke. Inclusivity is a key theme of the company's marketing and communication strategy, leading with a message of quality and appeal as a beverage for anyone who isn't drinking. In the following interview, Luke talks about how his interest in entrepreneurship sparked the idea for Lucky Saint and why he has a long-term vision for the brand. He also explains how the company incorporates consumer insights and data into its retail and buyers pitches, his views on Lucky Saint's role in the non-alcoholic beer category and how he thinks about competing with strategically-owned and -aligned beer companies. Lyle analyses how he feels these industry experts are paying attention to the wrong metrics considering the increasing desire by many pub-goers to engage in a non-alcoholic beer or two at social events, even going as far as to say they might see more impressive numbers if they analysed these stats in detail as non-alcoholic drinks can be consumers at a slightly quicker rate! Jacki discusses how pubs, restaurants, and the hospitality industry at large need to do far better when it comes to providing a range of non-alcoholic drinks including wines and spirits, mentioning a landlord friend of hers who himself doesn't drink, but acknowledges that the range they offer at his pub could be better. Introducing Jono Holt. Ten years ago he founded Otherway, the strategically-led studio where design and advertising work together to connect brands with a new generation of consumers. Forged from a background in advertising but with a desire to create omni-channel brands in a fast-changing digital world; Jono spotted the DTC trend early, looking to brands like Warby Parker in the states, going on to launch brands like Butternut Box, Psycle, Hylo, Cabinet, Moju, Lucky Saint and many more, including their own watch brand Farer.  And in many ways, ten years on, Otherway have come full circle. Not only launching a new studio in San Francisco but playing a hand in a surprising amount of ads that you'll see on the London Underground. With brands like Strongbow, Deliveroo, Inches, Graze, Moretti, and Hayman's Gin all demanding a slice of Otherway's creative aptitude for first-class communications.  For me this episode is a special one. The 100th episode. I spent four years at Otherway working closely with Jono and learning as much as I possibly could from him. An approach to brand strategy that is provocative, commercial, to-the-point and delivered with conviction without the fluff, time-wasting or jargon that you can find lurking in other agencies. He hasn't taught me everything but he's taught me a hell of a lot - and I'm lucky to count him among my mentors today.  In this retrospective episode we look back at the past ten years in business and to the future, garnering his point of view on the world of brands today while looking at the opportunities in the market tomorrow. This week we are joined by Luke Hemsley the Founder of Wednesdays Domain the premium Non-Alcoholic Wine brand. We have seen a huge rise in the last couple of years in the no and low alcohol space, we have non-alcoholic spirit brands such as Clean Co which is leading the way in the spirits section, Lucky Saint is doing some impressive things in the beer world, but wine was definitely being left out until Wednesdays Domain came along. There is something really romantic about choosing a bottle of wine to have with your dinner or to take over to a friends house, it is the branding, the bottle itself, what you will pair it with, the conversations you will have with it and so on. There is a lot more to it other than the actual wine itself and that is exactly what Wednesdays Domain is playing on with their de-alcoholised red and white wine.The idea came to Luke during the Pandemic, where like many of us Luke returned to his parents house which resulted in the drinking of a lot of wine. This unsustainable habit made Luke realise that although he really enjoyed sitting around the table chatting and drinking with his family at the end of the day, the headache the next morning wasn't really ideal when he had to work. Say hello to Duncan Keith. He co-runs Days, a truly alcohol-free brewing company.    Launched back in October 2020, this Scottish 0.0% beer startup is riding the wave of moderation. Starting as mainly a direct-to-consumer brand they're now in over 500 physical locations, having sold over 1/4 million bottles to date.    Having recently raised £1mn to help fuel their growth with investors such as Mindful Chef's Giles Humphries, Propercorn's Ryan Kohn and Camden Town's former MD Adam Keary, they are preparing themselves for hoppy greatness.    However, the world of alcohol-free is fighting over way more than just Dry January and Sober October.
