Gotta remember to get and post a picture of my growing Romaine Lettuce head. I took the cut off base, surgically sliced the oxidized bottom, criss cross etched the bottom and planted. Yes, from a head of lettuce I purchased at the grocery store! Not the correct time of year to do so here, but it is working! Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
When the Torah commands us to eat something, "Ain achila pachot m'kezayit," the minimum amount required is a "Kezayit." Kezayit literally means like the size of an olive. The Mishna in Masechet Keilim formulates the definition as a "Kezayit beinoni," a medium sized olive. Yet, how is this amount calculated in today's measurements. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909,Parshat Pikudei and Parshat, Tzav) calculates the Kezayit as a weight measure of nine Dram. We know that one Dram is equivalent to three grams. Therefore, according to the Ben Ish Hai, a Kezayit equals 27 grams. That is why many old siddurim state that the minimum amount of food requiring a beracha achrona is between 26-30 gram.Hacham Ben Sion Abba Shaul (Israel, 1923-1998, Or L'sion, Vol. 3, Introduction) raises a number of difficulties with the opinion of the Ben Ish Hai. One of the issues he discusses is the opinion of Maran in this matter. In Hilchot Pesach, Maran clearly holds that a Kezayit equals a half of a besa (egg). This is the opinion of Rashi, Tosafot and other Rishonim (Early Commentaries). However, in other places, (Hilchot Erubin and Hilchot Yom Kippur) Maran adopts the opinion of the Rambam that a Kezayit is only one third of a besa. How can this discrepancy in Maran be reconciled? Hacham Ben Sion concludes that in principle Maran holds like the Rambam; a Kezayit is one third of a besa. However, on Pesach, he was machmir, and adopted the stricter opinion of half a besa. In practice, with regard to calculating a Kezayit of Masa , Hacham Ben Sion takes a different approach. Whereas the Ben Ish Hai calculated the Kezayit as a weight measurement, Hacham Ben Sion measures it as a quantity of volume. In other words, a Kezayit of Masa is the volume of Masa that will displace a Kezayit (27 cc) of water. He calculated that the volume of 20 grams of our regular Masa, round or square, displaces 27 cc of water. He formulated the measurement in weight so that we would not have to calculate the food volume.According to this, before Pesach, one should take a food scale and weigh out 20 grams of Masa in order to determine a Kezayit. On the Seder night, we eat Masa three times. The first time, Mosi- Masa, some eat two Kezayit. Another Kezayit is need for Korech and one more for the Afikoman. Hacham Ben Sion made the calculation for Maror as well. He determined that the Romaine Lettuce we use as Maror has almost the same density as water. 30 grams of Maror displace a Kezayit (27 cc) of water. Therefore, a Kezayit of Maror is 30 grams, which should be weighed out before Pesach to give an indication of the amount that must be eaten.Hacham Ovadia disagreed with Hacham Ben Sion. He did not formulate Kezayit in terms of volume. He felt that it is too difficult for the masses to make the necessary calculations and conversions. Measuring volume would require conducting experiments involving water displacement and pulverizing foods to eliminate the air pockets, which do not count towards the measurement. Rather, Hacham Ovadia ruled like the Ben Ish Hai, the Kaf Hahaim and the Petach HaDvir who all formulated Kezayit as a weight. Accordingly, 27 grams of any food will always be a Kezayit, irrespective of the food's density. To determine a Kezayit, one merely has to look at the food labeling to determine the food weight. Rav Abitan in his English Yalkut Yosef writes that Hacham Ovadia would also agree to the measurements of Hacham Ben Sion after he already successfully made the calculation. Accordingly, one who ate only 20 grams of Masa, instead of 27 grams, has fulfilled the misva. It is difficult to decide between these two giants. However, if somebody is looking for an easy way to determine a Kezayit, he should adopt the approach of Hacham Ovadia that a Kezayit is always 27 grams, irrespective of the food density. It is too difficult for us to measure the volume of each type of food. However, with regard to Pesach, since Hacham Ben Sion already calculated the volumes, we can avoid uncertainty and rely on his measurements. Therefore, 20 grams of Masa and 30 grams of Maror equal a Kezayit.SUMMARYA Kezayit can be measured as 27 grams of any food, irrespective of its density. For the Misva of Masa and Maror, one can be lenient and eat 20 grams of Masa.

Shabbos Hagadol Derasha Young Israel Century City: Thiswas a "Shabbos Hagadol Derasha (Sermon)"by Rabbi YY Jacobson addressing the Young Israel of Century City, CA, onSunday, 8 Nissan, 5781, March 21, 2021. Three of the four questions we ask at the Seder are answered during the night, if only indirectly. But not the fourth question. On all other nights, we don't dip even once. Why on this night do we dip twice? One time, karapsa vegetablein salt water; the second time, maror in charoses, bitter herbs (or Romaine Lettuce) in the sweet mixture of apples, pears, nuts and wine. During the entire seder, it seems, we never get an answer to this question. What is the answer? Why do we dip twice? There are two dips that characterize Jewish historyone was the beginning of our exile, and one created the end of our exile. Both involved blood and goats. Josephs brothers dipped his coat into the blood of a goat, and that is how our exile began. The Jews dipped a hyssop plant into the goats blood on the eve of Passoverand that is how redemption began! What do these two dips represent? There is the dip that creates Jewish exile; and the dip that ends it. Of all the slanders about Jews throughout history, the Blood Libel stands out as the most insane. How could have this ever taken root? The last thing a Jew would ever eat is blood. The Torah categorically prohibits a Jew from eating blood. What is more, there is a heavenly death penalty for a Jew eating blood! Reb Elchanan Wasserman suggested a daring explanation.

ID theft criminals are entering post offices with fake IDs and doing address changes. The USPS gets 37 million address changes each year. An unwitting pawn in ID theft, they say working to prevent false address changes, but determined criminals can get this done. If your mails suddenly stops coming, it’s 5 alarm fire drill time for your finances. Immediately freeze your credit with Equifax, Transunion and Experian. That prevents the crooks from applying from new credit as if they’re you. Meanwhile they get your existing account statements and can engage in account takeover fraud, and buy things as if they’re you. Watch account activity closely. Think through which bills you should be receiving and contact creditors. Go to the post office and make corrections. The faster you do this, the more you limit potential damage. The FDA had information months ago concerning an E.coli outbreak in romaine lettuce that sickened people in a dozen states in July, August and September. The FDA kept this secret to protect farmers, because when this happened prior and the info was published, it devastated the farmers. The FDA and CDC were finally able to verify the source in October but still did not disclose until now for unknown reasons. This is NOT OK. We need to have confidence in the watchdogs for our nation’s food supply. Recently there’s been another outbreak of salmonella in 6 states involving ground beef that HAS been announced. We need confidence in our food supply and know there will be quick action when issues arise. At an Airbnb CA property last week, 5 were killed and several injured in a shooting at a Halloween party. Airbnb has been under a cloud concerning party house rentals. Individuals will troll listings, rent a house for 1 or 2 nights, and advertise a party on social media with paid entry. Party house rackets have been a problem in many cities, with Airbnb noncommittal on the subject. But now that fatalities have occurred, Airbnb says they will ban party houses. How we don’t know. Airbnb is going through an awkward adolescence, having trouble handling its growth. Vice.com discovered crooked landlords, listing places on Airbnb that are either non-existent or owned by someone else. On arrival day the hapless renter gets notified of some terrible problem and is diverted to what’s in fact the real, far inferior rental to the bogus one advertised. This is happening in cities around the country. Airbnb does not stand behind the renters getting scammed this way. Airbnb needs to protect its platform. If people cannot trust that they’ll be treated honestly, the platform will lose validity in the marketplace. Operators need to beef up their investigative force and customer service operations to deal with problems as they happen and to weed out the crooks. 5 people are dead. Airbnb offers potentially great environments, they’ve got to make it work better. If you’re a renter, be cautious and read reviews thoroughly. Learn more about your ad choices. Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) estimates about 48 Million people get sick each year from Foodbourne Illnesses. In 2018, The U.S. Population was 327 Million People..... 48 Million People is almost 15 PERCENT of the Population! That's INSANE! Of those 48 Million People....About 128,000 people are hospitalized and around 3 THOUSAND people DIE from Foodbourne Illnesses each year in the U.S. More and more cases of E Coli from tainted Ground Beef, are spreading nationwide. The CDC reported on April 12, 2019, that E Coli contaminated Ground Beef was the culprit in an outbreak that crossed the borders of 6 States. That was in April.......To Date..... 196 people, from 10 Different States, have contracted the Shiga Toxin producing E Coli (STEC) strain, that causes Illness. Two types of E. coli that cause foodbourne illnesses diagnosed in the United States are Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and entero-toxigenic E. coli (ETEC). STEC are a group of E. coli that produce Shiga toxin. This Poison causes people to have diarrhea, which can be bloody. When you hear reports about outbreaks of E. Coli infections in the United States, they’re usually talking about a type called STEC O157. Shiga Toxin producing E. Coli was named after Japanese Physician and Bacteriologist..... Kiyoshi Shiga. Dr. Shiga became famous for the discovery of "Shigella Dysenteriae," the organism that caused "Dysentry" in 1897, during a severe epidemic in which more than 90,000 cases were reported. "Dysentry" is an inflammatory disease of the intestine especially of the large intestine, which always results in severe diarrhea and abdominal pain. Entero-toxigenic E. coli (ETEC) are the leading cause of Traveler's Diarrhea, which is the most common travel-related illness. It can occur anywhere, but the highest-risk destinations in the world are in most of Asia (except for Japan) as well as the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, and Central and South America. To date....here are The following States have reported cases of the STEC outbreak - FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MS, MN, OH, TN, VA 28 people were hospitalized and 2 cases of Hemolitic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a life threatening condition which can cause kidney failure. Let's take a look at some DISGUSTING facts about E. Coli : 1. E. Coli infections happen when you EAT....."tiny" microscopic amounts of HUMAN or ANIMAL FECES. It takes about 3-5 days from the time you eat the "tainted food," until you start to show symptoms. 2. The scary part is ....... you probably come into contact with E.Coli more than you think you do. The Bacteria exists "Naturally" in the environment and in the "intestines" of Humans & Animals. Outbreaks in "Multiple States" of E. Coli in the last 10 YEARS, have primarily come from FOOD you bought at Grocery Stores.... Ground Beef..... Romaine Lettuce.....and even Frozen Pizza! E. Coli comes in different strains.... and most of the strains are Harmless. That's good news! The STEC Strain is one of the strains of E Coli that cause people to get very sick. The major symptoms of STEC are: a. Severe Stomach Cramps b. Diarrhea... very watery and can contain blood. c. Vomiting Sometimes..... STEC causes Urinatry Tract Infections (UTI's) ... Respiratory Illness or Pneumonia. A very SERIOUS effect of STEC can cause Hemolitic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is a condition that results in the DESTRUCTION of blood Platelets (Platelets are the cells that form "clots" to stop bleeding). HUS can cause anemia (low red blood cell count.. which means your remaining Red Blood Cells won't have enough "Hemoglobin" which is an iron-rich protein that helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body). This can cause you to feel tired or weak. You may also have shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, or an irregular heartbeat. HUS can also cause "Kidney Failure," due to the damage to the very tiny blood vessels of the kidneys. That's a Serious Problem Nation! It's hard to avoid E. Coli completely. Here are some ways to lower your risk of infection: a. Try not to swallow water from swimming pools, lakes, ponds and streams. b. Avoid eating "UNPASTURIZED" Dairy Products or Juices. c. Cook Meat THOROUGHLY. The CDC recommends cooking Ground Beef to a temperature of 160 degrees Farinheight. There's NO QUICK CURE for Treating E. Coli Infections. Most people will recover in 5 - 10 days. You need to stay HYDRATED people! Drink LOTS of WATER! Eat a lot of CHICKEN SOUP! Staying HYDRATED is a Key component to Recovery. The CDC advises NOT to use "Antibiotics" as a treatment for E. Coli STEC infections..... since there is NO EVIDENCE that antibiotics are helpful with STEC....AND.....using antibiotics may INCREASE YOUR RISK of developing HUS .... Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. www.TheWeightLossNation.com How can you prevent STEC infection? Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water. Follow the four steps to food safety when preparing food: Clean your hands & food surfaces often. Separate -Raw meat, Chicken, Seafood and Eggs can Spread Germs to ready-to-eat foods—unless you keep them separate. Cook Food to the Right Temperature. Use a food thermometer to make sure meat has reached a safe minimum cooking temperature. Chill - Refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours. Bacteria can multiply rapidly if left at room temperature or in the “Danger Zone” which is between 40°F and 140°F. Never leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if it’s hotter than 90° F outside). You can’t tell whether meat is safely cooked by looking at its color. Did you know that ......One in four burgers turns brown before it has reached the safe internal temperature of 160°F. Use a food thermometer to check that it’s safe to eat. Cook ground beef, pork, and lamb to an internal temperature of at least 160°F Insert food thermometer into the side of the patty, to the center, to check. Cook beef steaks and roasts to an internal temperature of at least 145°F and allow the meat to rest for 3 minutes after you remove meat from the grill or stove. Check temperature in the thickest part of steaks or roasts. Prevent cross-contamination by thoroughly washing hands, counters, cutting boards, and utensils with soap and water after they touch raw meat. Don’t eat RAW Dough or Batter. Take precautions with food and water when traveling abroad. Check out the CDC site at CDC.gov There's an entire section on "Traveller's Health" that you can check out when travelling abroad. Bill Marler is the most prominent foodborne illness lawyer in America, and a major force in food policy in the U.S. and around the world. Bill’s firm—Marler Clark: The Food Safety Law Firm— (https://marlerclark.com/) has represented thousands of individuals in claims against food companies whose contaminated products have caused life-altering injuries and even death. Bill began litigating foodborne illness cases in 1993, when he represented Brianne Kiner, the most seriously injured survivor of the historic Jack in the Box Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak, in her landmark $15.6 million settlement with the fast food company. For the last 25 years, Bill has represented victims of nearly every large foodborne illness outbreak in the U.S. He has filed lawsuits and class actions against Cargill, Chili’s, Chi-Chi’s, Chipotle, ConAgra, Dole, Excel, Golden Corral, KFC, McDonald’s, Odwalla, Peanut Corporation of America, Sheetz, Sizzler, Supervalu, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s. Through his work, he has secured over $650 million for victims of E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and other foodborne illnesses. Bill Marler’s advocacy for a safer food supply includes petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture to better regulate pathogenic E. coli, working with nonprofit food safety and foodborne illness victims’ organizations, and helping spur the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act. His work has led to invitations to address local, national, and international gatherings on food safety, including testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, and the British House of Lords. Bill travels widely and frequently to speak to law schools, food industry groups, fair associations, and public health groups about the litigation of claims resulting from outbreaks of pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and the issues surrounding it. He gives frequent donations to industry groups for the promotion of improved food safety and has established numerous collegiate science scholarships across the nation. He is a frequent writer on topics related to foodborne illness. Among other accolades, Bill was awarded the NSF Food Safety Leadership Award for Education in 2010. In this episode of Food Safety Matters, we speak to Bill Marler about: The circumstances under which he met the late Dave Theno The Jack in the Box case and how it propelled his career The current listeriosis outbreak in South Africa, and how it compares to the Jack in the Box case 25 years ago Why foodborne illness cases involving hamburger and Escherichia coli are no longer a huge problem How the Odwalla apple juice outbreak could have been avoided Whether or not Salmonella should be officially declared an adulterant The responsibility of food safety: consumer vs. food industry His thoughts on the ongoing Peanut Corporation of America case and whether or not Stewart Parnell's attempts at a new trial are valid FSMA, and how the new regulations can be improved Blockchain, whole-genome sequencing, and other technologies that are changing the food safety for the better His newfound interest in public health as it relates to food safety Related Content Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat https://amzn.to/2rjrvbl 20 Years of Marler Clark's Top Foodborne Illness Cases http://bit.ly/2HTgRz6 News Mentioned in This Episode Deadly Listeria Strain Confirmed at South Africa Meat Plant http://bit.ly/2JPuU9K UPDATE: One Death Caused by Romaine Lettuce as E. coli Outbreak Spreads http://bit.ly/2remm5k New USDA Report Breaks Down Food Recalls 2004-2013 http://bit.ly/2FgaALZ; Trends in Food Recalls 2004-2013 http://bit.ly/2wbvk8o UPDATE: Study: Fresh Produce Bacteria Can Thrive Despite Routine Chlorine Sanitizing http://bit.ly/2Hr9BdR; Official Study http://bit.ly/2Ky5XRl Presenting Sponsor 3M Science. Whatever you do, don't eat Romaine Lettuce from Arizona
Hey There Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com Today, I'm going to tell you about a voluntary FDA recall on a popular Weight Loss Supplement and about weight loss supplements alleged to contain "Sibutramine," that was not listed on the product label. I"ve been seeing "recalls" all over the internet, involving "Romaine Lettuce" and "Eggs" containing Salmonella. Now.....I'm seeing articles from around the world reporting DEATHS from the use of "Weight Loss" Supplements containing "Sibutramine," that wasn't listed on the product label. "Lyn By Pim" Dietary Weight Loss Supplements may contain Sibutramine and found to be linked to four deaths in Thailand. A 31 year old woman in Thailand alledgedly took the supplements for 30 days and died on March 28. The medical examiner’s preliminary ruling was that she died of acute heart failure. A 33 year old Bangkok man who allegedly had taken the supplements for 10 days died on April 6 after suffering a stroke and losing consciousness. In another case, a 48 year old Pathum Thani man who allegedly had taken the supplements for more than a month died on April 27, with preliminary tests indicating acute heart failure. The fourth person was said in social media posts to have died on April 28 after taking the same supplements.. "Lyn by Pim" Supplement weight loss tablets are sold in 10 tablet packages. The “Black Box” is said to contain “Bisacodyl” a Laxative, which was not properly labeled on the product and the 10 tablet “white box” is said to contain the appetite suppressant “Sibutramine,” which was not properly labeled on the product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered that production of Sibutramine be discontinued in October 2010. www.TheWeightLossNation.com Here is the "Safety Announcement" I pulled directly off of the FDA website: FDA Drug Safety Communication: FDA Recommends Against the Continued Use of Meridia (sibutramine) Safety Announcement [10-8-2010] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending against continued prescribing and use of Meridia (sibutramine) because this drug may pose unnecessary cardiovascular risks to patients. FDA has requested that Abbott Laboratories—the manufacturer of Meridia—voluntarily withdraw this drug product from the United States market. Abbott has agreed to voluntarily stop marketing of Meridia in the United States. Meridia was FDA-approved in November 1997 for weight loss and maintenance of weight loss in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 (≥30) kg/m2 or for patients with a BMI ≥27 kg/m2 who have other cardiovascular risk factors. BMI is a measure of body fat in adults that is based on height and weight. Patients with a BMI ≥30 kg/m2 are considered obese. FDA’s recommendation is based on new data from the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes (SCOUT) trial, which demonstrated a 16% increase in risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (a composite of non-fatal heart attack, non-fatal stroke, resuscitation after cardiac arrest and cardiovascular death) in patients treated with Meridia compared to patients taking a placebo. At the end of the trial (60 months), patients in the Meridia group lost a small amount of body weight compared to patients in the placebo group. FDA has concluded that the risk for an adverse cardiovascular event from Meridia in the population studied outweighed any benefit from the modest weight loss observed with the drug. That was in 2010 people! Now.....Sibutramine is surfacting again! All over the internet.....for sale in Supplements and "Weight Loss Products." I just went on “EBay” and found these same “Lyn by Pim” products being sold online. *** USE CAUTION *** Nation! Buying vitamins and weight loss supplements on line can be dangerous! You have to know where the product is being manufactured......and.....what ingredients are "IN" the product. If a product does not list where the supplement or vitamin is manufactured on the label.....DON'T BUY IT! Transparency is key! The FDA regulates legal and illegal drugs in the U.S. Vitamins and supplements are NOT regulated by the FDA. They do not have the man power to do it Here are FAQ from the FDA website: What is sibutramine and what are the associated risks? Sibutramine is a Schedule IV controlled substance and the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Meridia, an approved prescription drug to treat obesity. Populations who would be at increased risk of serious adverse health effects from consuming a standard dose of sibutramine include: Patients with a history of hypertension, especially those with uncontrolled or poorly controlled hypertension. Patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Patients with narrow angle glaucoma. Patients with a history of seizure. Patients predisposed to bleeding events and those taking concomitant medications known to affect hemostasis or platelet function. Patients with severe hepatic dysfunction. Patients concurrently taking the following medications: Sumatriptan Dihydroergotamine Dextromethorphan Meperidine, Pentazocine Fentanyl Lithium Tryptophan MAO inhibitors What label statements are required on the containers and packages of dietary supplements? Five statements are required: 1) the statement of identity (name of the dietary supplement), 2) the net quantity of contents statement (amount of the dietary supplement), 3) the nutrition labeling, 4) the ingredient list, and 5) the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. Do I need to specify the country of origin if my product, or the ingredients in my product, is not from the United States? Yes. Unless excepted by law, the Tariff Act requires that every article of foreign origin (or its container) imported into the United States conspicuously indicate the English name of the country of origin of the article. www.TheWeightLossNation.com The 2nd item of importance is the Voluntary Recall of "Kratom" Brand Supplements, due to the presence of "Salmonella." Here we go again! Salmonella in Romaine Lettuce.....Salmonella in Eggs....now we have Salmonella in Weight Loss Supplements. NutriZone LLC. a company out of Houston, TX has voluntarily "Recalled" ALL of it's "Kratom" Brand Supplements due to the possible presence of Salmonella. The dietary supplements are labeled and packaged as follows: Cali Green Malay Cali Maeng Da Cali Thai Nirvanio Bali Nirvanio Green Malay Nirvanio Maeng Da Nirvanio Special Reserve Pain Out Green Malay Pain Out Maeng Da Pain Out Thai The FDA states the products were sold "Nationwide" and particulary in the following States: (FL, CA, OK, GA, SC, PA, LA, WA, MS, MO, KY, AZ, CO, TX, NY, IL). The following statement is listed on the FDA website regarding the voluntary recall: No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling and testing by the FDA revealed the presence of Salmonella. Consumers who have purchased the products listed above should discontinue use of the product and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact NutriZone, LLC, at 1-800-936-7936, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm Central Standard time. Kudos to NutriZone for taking a "ProActive" approach to this issue, avoiding a nationwide epidemic of Salmonella! Anyone may also go to the FDA "Med Watch" website to check out information about the "Kratom" Recall or to Report any symptoms or ill side effects from using the NutriZone products.
