Getting aligned with your work and your personality is crucial for finding balance, harmony and happiness while still achieving your goals. Hear insights about: How Michelle got her start in and discovered her love of real estate through a part-time job at the young age of 13 How Michelle’s insider view of the real estate business and entrepreneurialism initially scared her, and how she learned to push through her fears Why Michelle realized that doing things her own way and aligning her work with her introverted personality made a big difference in her success and happiness Why Michelle made big changes to her life and career to pursue her “trifecta” of freedom, fulfillment and financial success through new levels of alignment Why true success comes from loving what you do, and why it is important to avoid the trap of “comparisonitis” How Michelle’s “ABCs of Alignment” (awareness, belief system, clarity) can help you truly understand yourself and what steps to take to become more aligned How neuroscience shows us that we can reprogram our minds even before we truly believe in our decisions How our brains are wired to keep us safe rather than allow us to achieve success, and why overriding our fears and having faith are vital skills to learn Why you have to be “committed” to your decisions rather than merely being “interested” in the outcomes Why staying true to what you find fulfilling and listening to your heart opens new doors to success that you might not have even imagined Getting Aligned Michelle Risi doesn’t fit the mold of what many of us have been led to believe is the “successful real estate agent”. She isn’t an aggressive, extroverted sales master who schmoozes her way toward closing deals. But Michlle was named one of the Top 50 Women in Canadian Real Estate, according to Real Estate Professionals Magazine. She’s a broker/owner, a thriving entrepreneur, thought leader, and CEO of The Aligned Agent Academy where she teaches other real estate agents the power of getting aligned. How has she achieved so much in her career while still staying true to herself? For Michelle, alignment is everything. It’s about aligning your work with your passions and your personality, and finding the right balance that works for you — even if it runs contrary to everything you were taught! Michelle joined me for a powerful conversation in this week’s episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, where she shared how achieving alignment starts with the ABCs of Alignment — Awareness, Beliefs, and Clarity. Getting Aligned with the “ABCs of Alignment” Michelle teaches that getting aligned starts with Awareness; understanding yourself, how you’re operating, how you make decisions, and how those decisions do (or don’t!) align with your goals. Once you understand yourself and where you are now, the next step is to look at your Beliefs. Do the things you truly believe resonate with your goals? Or do you listen to the tiny inner voice of self-doubt and fear? What do you believe about ‘success’ and what it looks like? What work can you do to “reprogram” your beliefs and conquer your inner critic that too often holds you back? The last step is Clarity; it’s about creating a clear and uncompromising vision for where you want to go. Your brain needs that clarity as a roadmap to help steer you to the right decisions that will bring you closer to your destination. It takes time, intentionality, dedication and hard work to reprogram your brain and learn to see success through a new lens. But the results are more than worth the effort! You really can have the life you want, if you’re ready to do the work of getting aligned with your dreams. To learn more about the extraordinary Michelle Risi, you can follow her on Instagram or visit her website, MichelleRisi.com! About Michelle Risi Michelle Risi was named one of the Top 50 Women in Canadian Real Estate according to Real Estate Professionals Magazine. It’s an accolade she has earned! Born into the real estate industry, Michelle began her career over 20 years ago, and has served in multiple roles to help grow one of Canada’s largest real estate franchises. She is the Broker/Owner of Royal Lepage Connect Realty, a brokerage in Durham and Toronto with 6 locations and approx 300 agents and staff, a published author for Forbes and an active member of the Forbes Real Estate Council. Michelle’s journey as a female entrepreneur is what has led her to the work she does with agents in our industry. She is passionate about helping agents succeed and in addition to her brokerage and industry leadership, she shares her wealth of experience and insights as a public speaker, podcast host and CEO of The Aligned Agent Academy, a coaching company devoted to helping agents create Freedom, Fulfillment and Financial Success in their business. In addition to being committed to her work, she is whole-heartedly committed to her husband Jim, their two teenage children, and their fur-baby Maddie. Her secret to managing her two worlds is in her work-life harmony philosophy, one that she shares with other female entrepreneurs who find themselves struggling with “work-life balance”. Michelle Mills Clement is healing wounds through her job. As CEO of the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, she hit the ground running when she proposed a resolution to formally apologize to the community for past discrimination against minorities, such as redlining policies. For Michelle, undoing history that did not promote Fair Housing in Chicago was personal. She was leading an organization that only decades ago wouldn’t have even let her become a member. Part of her mission now is to undo the damage of the past by redefining the culture of CAR through training and creating space to have uncomfortable conversations in an effort to bring more equity to housing access. In this empowering conversation with Emily, Michelle shares her philosophy of what has motivated her organization’s decisions, the impact those moves have had on the community, and how powerful the role of a REALTOR® really is. Learn how having empathetic “Yes, and…” conversations transformed CAR and added value to its membership, making Chicago a better city. When her 6 children in her beautiful blended family started telling other moms to try Parenting with Love and Logic, Michelle knew she hit gold. I am so excited to share this episode with you, Be You Collective!   Michelle Rogers, our guest today, is a Canadian mom, wife, and owner of a multi-million dollar health and wellness franchise. Today she shares with us what drove her to choose Parenting with Love and Logic four years ago and the amazing changes she has seen not only in her children, but in herself and her marriage. When you improve one area of your life, it can improve others and Michelle demonstrates that for us today.   Show Notes: [3:01] - Michelle has a blended family of 6 children. She noticed that the energy was very chaotic and knew she needed to shift parenting styles. [3:57] - For Michelle, she found that she was more inconsistent and her biological children tended to be the resistant and challenging ones. Overall, men tend to be more logical parents. [4:48] - Michelle read the book Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline and shares the beginning story that had a huge impact on her as a reader. [6:06] - When Michelle read the first part of the book, she immediately felt connected and knew that it would be a powerful shift. Her friends and family took notice and asked what she was doing differently. [7:14] - Jill had a really great experience with raising her teenagers, but does share the little frustrations and rules she has with her children. [9:23] - Parenting with Love and Logic is letting your kids experience the logical consequences of their own choices on a daily basis. It’s allowing them to have low cost consequences instead of high cost consequences when it’s too late. [10:01] - Michelle shares a low cost consequence example and how a Love and Logic parent would react with empathy and support. [11:34] - Before Parenting with Love and Logic, Michelle’s children didn’t listen and eventually had to resort to shouting. [12:09] - Michelle illustrates how discipline looks in her household now. [13:29] - You have to approach consequences with empathy. Don’t be tempted by sarcasm. [15:56] - In the beginning, change is uncomfortable for everybody. Depending on the age of your children, they will react differently. You have to stick to your guns and continue to apply empathy. [17:18] - Using examples of high cost consequences you’ve experienced with your children is impactful as well. [19:05] - Michelle shares that some of the consequences will break your heart, but there’s no way out of it for her children. But through this parenting style, children will learn that their consequences are due to their choices. [20:42] - The first few times, you’re going to have to be strong because it is for their benefit. Remember, they are choosing the consequence. [21:40] - Jill admits that she was very militant as a mom and shares how strict she was. [23:19] - How we parent is the embodiment of how we treat ourselves. [24:41] - This technique was so powerful for Michelle and her family, that her stepchildren went to their own moms and asked them to buy Love and Logic to implement because it works so well for them. [26:09] - Michelle realized that her original parenting style wasn’t respectful for herself and her children.  [27:06] - After reading the book and starting to implement this parent style, it even has had a positive impact on her marriage. [29:08] - During a fit of emotion, Michelle hugs her children tight and puts the consequence on hold until they can calm down but knows that they don’t want to act that way. [30:13] - When you improve yourself in one area of your life, it will improve other areas as well. [31:29] - Once her husband noticed that Michelle’s parenting was so easy, he bought the book as well. [35:37] - Michelle shares her story on how she has grown and improved her life. [37:06] - Michelle admits that everyone has a dark and light side and you have to accept both sides. She says to acknowledge the dark passenger but don’t feed it. Today, I interview Toni Okamoto, founder of Plant-based on a Budget and Michele Cehn, founder of World of Vegan to talk about their new book and their journey in building their business. Combined, they have over 1.5 million Instagram followers and numbers in the six figures on various platforms such as youtube, email lists, and everything else. Toni and Michelle built their following from scratch and turned what they did from hobby to business. In this episode, you will learn the journey that Toni and Michelle took to get there as long as some really insightful tips on running an influencer company. But most importantly, they’re a dynamic duo and an amazing case study of how collaboration amplifies everyone. The funny story is that I’ve met them personally and have even playtested their recipe. Why Funny you should ask. Toni’s husband is Paul Shapiro, author of Clean Meat, and a popular interview in episode 102. When I moved to Sacramento to start Better Meat Co, Toni was one of the first people I met in Sacramento and Michelle also lives there. Since they loved to cook, they would do a lot of fun parties and cook delicious food. One of my favorites is a chocolate pie made of silken tofu. Toni and Michelle are probably the most down to Earth people I’ve ever met.  They are super authentic, super passionate in what they do, and they are just such nice, accommodating people who are just full of sunshine. You can find their new, collaborative cookbook The Friendly Vegan Cookbook wherever you can find books, and we have a link to it in our shownotes! About Toni Toni Okamoto is the founder of Plant-Based on a Budget, the popular website and meal plan that shows you how to save dough by eating veggies. She’s also author of the Plant-Based on a Budget Cookbook, co-author of The Friendly Vegan Cookbook, and the co-host of The Plant-Powered People Podcast. Okamoto’s work has been profiled by NBC News, Parade Magazine, and she’s a regular presence on local and national morning shows across the country, where she teaches viewers how to break their meat habit without breaking their budget. She was also featured in the popular documentary What the Health. When she’s not cooking up a plant-based storm, she’s spending time with her husband and their rescued dog in Sacramento, CA. Michelle’s mission in life is to “make a mark on the world with a skate on one foot and a black pump on the other” and there is no doubt this mission is evidenced in her reality. Michelle grew up as an ice hockey student-athlete and used her love of the sport to propel her career. She was the first female awarded a scholarship from the Chicago Blackhawk association, at age 18, which presented further opportunities for her to work with both the NHL and NFL. But her transition to college athletics came unexpectedly, when she helped write a ‘Director of Marketing’ job description for her alma mater and decided to apply in the process. In our conversation, Michelle talks about the importance of developing a solid network and skills relevant to our industry; which for her, included participation in the 2016 Women Leaders Institute for Administrative Advancement. She also discusses the realities of relocating for a job and its impact on your personal and professional life. For Michelle, self-care includes never leaving vacation days unused and she expresses the importance of this as a leader and the opportunity it creates for your support staff. Keeping kids safe online is not a simple task, it takes time and effort and there are a number of steps involved. To help navigate our way through this new reality we are joined by our special guest, Michelle Derrig Author of the highly successful protective behaviours picture book ‘Only For Me'.  Michelle is a child protection advocate and stay-at-home Mum to four children aged from 5 to 15. Michelle's book, Only For Me is a gentle rhyming book which teaches young children that their body is private and that they have a right to protect their privacy. Since its release in July 2016, over 13,000 copies have been sold across the globe to critical acclaim by parents, educators, teachers and child protection organisation We ask Michelle questions including: You have been a child protection advocate for many years, what changes have you experienced and seen in since we went into lockdown? Why is online safety more important than ever before? You have mentioned that the media have reported about a handbook circulating the dark web, listing ways for predators to target children during the COVID lockdown. For someone who doesn't know what the dark web is can you quickly explain what it is and why parents should be aware of it? Your article summarises online protection into ABC - can you tell us more? What are the types of threats that children may face online? Can you share any stories that illustrate the dangers/consequences? Children could be exposed to a new batch of malware threats because they are downloading more applications at the moment including viruses and ransomware. What has been your experience with this? What else can parents do to protect children? If god forbid a child was being targeted by a predator, what behaviours would a parent typically see? What should they do? Three years after the Obama family left the White House, Michelle and Barack have not left the limelight. In fact, if anything, the limelight has been permanently affixed above them. For Michelle, the first step was writing her memoir, “Becoming,” which she was given $60 million as an advance. Then she went on a 34-city book tour. And, of course, she had to film a documentary, which came out on May 6, to go along with it all. In summary, Michelle wrote a book about her life and then went on tour for the book, and then she did a documentary, made by her company, about the tour, which is about the book. It’s the circle of nepotism.

Sue founded SyneRxgy Consulting LLC, a concierge pharmacy service, and manages chronic disease states.  Her practice sites include a physician’s office, employer worksites, and in-home patient visits.  Sue adjusts medications, educates patients, implements and analyzes pharmacogenomic and nutrigenomic patient testing, and reviews and compiles current medication lists for patients.  She enjoys empowering patients to take control of their health.   In 2018, Sue co-founded PGx101 with another pharmacist, Dan Krinsky.  PGx101 offers pharmacists 20 hours of ACPE approved continuing education and a certificate in Pharmacogenomics (PGx). Since 2016, Sue has been using PGx in her clinic and with home patients to implement patient-centered medication modification in conjunction with their providers.  Sue is one of three Co-Founders of Medipreneurs LLC, along with Michelle Fritsch, PharmD, and Anna Garrett, PharmD.  Medipreneurs is an international conference and community for pharmacy entrepreneurs. Current planning is underway for their 3rd annual conference. Sue is active in local, state and national professional organizations. For example she is a Board Member of the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and four adult children, reading, walking with friends, and brainstorming with others about action plans to get from where they are to where they want to be.  Michelle Fritsch, Pharm.D., BCGP, BCACP Michelle Fritsch is a Purdue Pharm D. graduate with post-doctoral training in Madison, Wisconsin.  She is board certified in geriatric pharmacy and ambulatory care pharmacy.  Starting in 1992, Michelle has been a professor teaching pharmacists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and physical therapists.  She has a passion for healthy aging and education. She is a specialist in medication use in people over 60. She founded two companies:  Retirement Wellness Strategies and Meds MASH, LLC, and works with a broad definition of health – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social.  Michelle is a frequent speaker, lately on topics of safe medication use, falls prevention, medical cannabis, addiction, opioid use, coordination of healthcare, retirement readiness, and the role of medication in healthy aging.  As healthcare is changing, she is also supporting entrepreneurial healthcare providers as a co- founder of Medipreneurs. Medipreneurs started around the time Sue started her business.  She was in a business mentoring group with Anna Garrett, Pharm D.  They supported one another and felt the desire to create a community for pharmacists to launch a business.  When Michelle joined Anna and Sue, the three came up with a conference that could support a community of pharmacists [and eventually healthcare entrepreneurs] on their respective entrepreneurial journeys.  The name of the conference is Medipreneurs.   Pivots and detours are not new to the Medipreneurs conference.  The first ever conference was in 2018.  It was delayed from Fall 2017 to April 2018.    The “Medipreneurs Detour” is in place over a period of time instead of the Medipreneurs Conference weekend.  There are “Detour Stops” where people can come to get information about Medipreneurs and where is it headed.  Examples include: The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast Episode 11 Online Masterminds, which are small groups with brainstorming and conversation Webinars provided by the speakers who were scheduled for the conference. Previous attendees can share what they learned and what they achieved in other ways too.   For me, Medipreneurs was like a mastermind every hour of every day.  Whether we were waiting for a scheduled program to start or chatting at the end of one, having a meal, or just bumping into one another, the Medipreneurs Conference was a place to share ideas, ask for thoughts, and get clarity. Lisa Larter, a Professional Business Coach, was the keynote speaker at Medipreneurs 2018 and 2019.  At Medipreneurs 2018, she helped me see value in services I was providing.  Then, she coached me to ask if there was a budget to pay me and how to negotiate a fair price.  Mission accomplished!  I now earn money in place of volunteering. The Medipreneurs Conference empowers pharmacists and healthcare entrepreneurs to see their value and so they can feel justified billing for services.  Examples include smoking cessation programs, medication review services, CBD consulting, women’s health and wellness practices, business coaching, and more. Pharmacists don’t recognize their value.  We are skilled at paying attention to detail and producing precise results.  Entrepreneurial life can seem counter intuitive.   Sue, Anna, and Michelle started Medipreneurs to invite other pharmacists to think outside the box and form the next wave of what pharmacy and healthcare could look like. Michelle talked about the energy in the first conference in 2018.  I drew a parallel to the opening ceremony at the Olympics.  Instead of representing countries, different disciplines of pharmacy practice and business were represented. Medipreneurs helped me funnel my ideas down to the one thing that I could move forward with.  Medipreneurs attendees can bring what they know from other industries to the conference and share with others.  For example, I can share what I know about rate guides from the voiceover industry.  By bringing helpful information from other industries into pharmacy, pharmacists can model best practices and apply them to their businesses, for example, developing rates for services.  Pharmacists need to set rates for services and share them with other entrepreneurs so everyone can establish fee-for-service expectations.  We need to stop giving everything away!     We discussed idea theft.  I was afraid that if I shared my idea, it would get stolen.  Michelle mentioned that she heard that concern from others too.  There is plenty of work to go around.  We can’t reach everyone.  It’s ok for someone to take an idea and apply it to a different part of the country.   I asked, "What’s the best thing that has happened since you started Medipreneurs?”  Sue said she likes to see someone pick an idea, move forward with it, and become successful.  Similarly, Michelle says she enjoys meeting all the people who participate in the conference and watching them find the path to what they want to pursue.   I asked, “What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome [with Medipreneurs]?”  Sue said, “Being seen.”  Branding, marketing, advertising, and getting the word out is outside of her comfort zone.  For Michelle, it has been the “leap of faith” and “the unknowns.”  Michelle wonders, “Where is it going now?  What direction is it going in now?  Are we taking it in the right direction?  Are we reaching the right people?” I asked Michelle and Sue respectively about their own businesses outside of Medipreneurs.  Michelle left Academia.  She has a specialty is geriatrics, meaning people over the age of 60.  She likes being on the young end of that and focusing on preventative medicine.  Her first business is Meds MASH:  Mature Adults Safe at Home.  Her intention was to focus on 60-80 year-olds and delay the time until they would need assistance.  In practice, her Meds MASH patients are the parents of those 60-80 year-olds, individuals in their 80’s-100’s!  Her second business is Retirement Wellness Strategies, which specializes in retirement-aged men who are defined by their jobs.  They struggle with retirement.  That’s a very niche practice area!      Sue works with a progressive physician’s office and has expanded her services into new areas.  In April 2019, her practice expanded to treating individuals with substance use disorder with MAT (medication assisted treatment).  Next, she wants to run a Hepatitis C clinic and introduce PREP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV prevention.  Sue also created PGX101, a course to educate pharmacists and primary care providers about the benefits of pharmacogenomics.   Sue has blossomed as an entrepreneur, and she made a great analogy between seeds and business.  Medipreneurs plants seeds, so entrepreneurs can start, grow, and operate their own businesses.  The conference helps nourish and water those seeds, giving the right environment for growth.  It can take a while to germinate a seed and see what kind of plant the seed produces.  Medipreneurs is the right place for entrepreneurs to get ideas and be among the right people to encourage growth.  Really a beautiful analogy.  Sue and Michelle want to see entrepreneurs blossom.   Medipreneurs advocates and educates.  They advocate for healthcare entrepreneurs and changes in healthcare.  They educate by sharing messages that will be important for entrepreneurs in the various stages of their entrepreneurial journeys.   To learn more about Medipreneurs, visit www.medipreneurs.com.

She is also the host of the Young & Scrappy Money podcast a weekly podcast featuring tips and tricks to take control of your finances.  Michelle takes a unique approach to many financial practices. She shares what a money squad is and how valuable it is to have a group of experts to help with decisions, especially for people who move frequently like military families. Michelle shares how she feels about real estate investing within a self-directed IRA and the importance of diversity. We also talk about things to ask before becoming a landlord. She shares her technique to make budgeting and keeping spending under control effortless. We also talk about a sinking fund, financial freedom, and Michelle gives her one best piece of advice that really applies to everyone.    Highlights from Episode 23 [01:06] Michelle lives in the suburbs of Atlanta which creates more room for her dogs.  [02:04] A money squad are the people in your life that help you keep your finances together. These are people like your CPA, bookkeeper,  estate planning attorney, financial adviser, financial planner, and anyone else who is a good financial influence. [03:17] Having a money squad is important for military people, especially when they move around a lot.  [05:29] Having a rental property depends on your personality, goals, and finding help for the management. It also depends on where you live and possibility for positive cash flow.  [08:32] Michelle doesn't recommend using IRAs to invest in real estate. It can be tricky and have tax consequences. There are ETFs and REITs for investing in real estate with diversification.  [12:16] For Michelle, budgeting is a time to build an aspirational spreadsheet. She tracks what's coming in, predictable expenses, savings goals, and what's left over to spend. She decides in advance how much to spend on the fun stuff based on what is spent on the necessary stuff.  [13:42] She divides her overall spending bucket into a weekly amount and gives herself an old school weekly allowance.  [14:28] She puts her spending money in a separate checking account, so she always knows how much she can spend without having to do any work. [16:22] Michelle's family has semi-combined expenses. It's a separate joint bank account where they each pay the same amount on the first of the month. Shared expenses come from this account.  [17:20] You have complete freedom when creating a joint or separate system with a partner or spouse. Find out how much you want to combine and if you are both on the same page.  [18:57] There's usually a savings component to your budget. Have an area to pull money from if you go over your budget.  [20:30] Consistent overspending is a good opportunity to take a look at your budget and see if it's realistic. [21:21] A sinking fund is for large and unpredictable recurring expenses. List what's problematic and how much it costs. Divide that money by 12 and transfer it into a savings account.  [23:16] Start with a $1000 emergency fund. A full emergency fund is anywhere from 3 to 6 months expenses.  [26:05] Financial freedom equates to choice and having the options to do what you want in this world.  [27:52] People with heavy student debt need to know that they aren't alone. Don't hide from it. There are options, but you need to do your homework.  [29:29] You can get information about your private student loan on your credit report.  [30:30] Michelle's one best piece of advice is to not ignore your finances. What We're Talking About -       Corporate Career -       Getting Laid Off...Twice -       Discovering Your Passion Falling Into Your Career Often times we graduate from college and have no idea what we want to do with our lives, so we take the first opportunity that comes along. It’s not our dream job, but we don’t know how to leave it or if there is something more out there for us, so we stay. We dread getting out of bed in the morning to go to work and it becomes a habit, we can’t get rid of. Michelle talks about how she fell into aviation because she could walk to the airport and it simply snowballed from there.  Losing Your Job Faced with two layoffs just years apart, Michelle decided that she would no longer put herself or her family through that kind of unknown and surprise again. Being made redundant in the workforce brings about all kinds of feelings and emotions on top of being a blow to your ego. Losing the sense of security, Michelle looked for options to become her own boss and also stay at home with her kids.  Finding The Career That’s Right For You  Sometimes you simply stumble upon the career that is meant for you, but more often than not you need to research things you enjoy doing, test them out and then decide on what you love to do...this is about discovering your passion. For Michelle, it was trial and error with event planning, social media management and finally she discovered the world of podcasting and her world changed for the better forever.  Take 15 minutes every day this week to brainstorm what it is that interests and excites you. Monica is somewhat of a hippy & is a bit obsessed with real food. Her clean eating lifestyle evolved slowly during her NINE year infertility journey. She spent six years searching for an answer to her unexplained infertility, which included never seeing a BFP and two failed IVFs. She decided to make some dramatic diet and lifestyle changes to improve her fertility health and requested immune tests, even though the doctors told her she wasn’t a candidate for such testing. The results came back and she discovered she had High Natural Killers Cells. The answer to her unexplained infertility. With five embryos on ice she did three FETs with immune suppressing drugs, which resulted in two miscarriages and one beautiful baby boy. Two months after all medical treatment was done and dusted, she found out the dramatic diet and lifestyle changes had paid off and she was pregnant naturally for the first time ever. Baby boy number two entered their family in March 2018.   Michelle Henderson is the founder of the Stepping Stones to Spiritual Guidance company. She created this podcast in the hopes of learning how others became spiritualist. Colin interviewed Michelle in the first episode so that she could share how she became "authentic" and how she was able to embrace who she was meant to be. The spirit world began to connect with Michelle when she was in her 20s. To fully understand what was happening, she took psychic classes from Kathleen Tucci.  The first stepping stone was accomplished! Information that Kathleen provided help guided Michelle to spiritual awakening. Unfortunately, life got in the way, and Michelle would not pursue spiritual life until her 50s. The timing was essential in Michelle's journey. For Michelle to continue her spiritual journey, she enrolled in a class with Tracy Escobar where she would learn how to develop her psychic-mediumship. Through this class, Michelle was lead to become a psychic medium healer. She also became interested in spiritual art and is able to draw loved ones that have crossed over. Her goal is to help others continue to heal as they fulfill their own journey and destiny.   Questions? mohenderson2525@gmail.com

How does food affect our lives? We know it affects the body… but your whole life? Yes! It’s the most available tool, the one that can spark the most change! Think about it. If you’re stuck in a body you hate, struggling with health issues, or just feeling sluggish and unhealthy, how can you shine your bright light out into the world? These five fellow Spirit Junkies and wellness-preneurs transformed their body, business, and life through food.     Meg Sylvester Food had a massive impact on Meg’s life…. AND business. Her entire spiritual awakening was linked with food. For years, she had suffered from daily migraines, acne, depression, stomach issues, lethargy. She even thought she had a brain tumor. But she couldn’t get a diagnosis. But doctors would check her bloods and tell her she was fine.   It was reading Grain Brain and The Universe Has Your Back that flicked a switch on the food/mood/soul connection. She became obsessed with the idea of functional medicine, root cause medicine - of finding the root cause of what was triggering her issues. Suddenly she felt empowered to shift out of victim mentality into lighthouse mentality, and answer her soul’s calling. Changing what she ate meant she overcame all her issues and had the energy and mental clarity to follow her dreams. That’s what propelled her out of her corporate job and into her current work - coaching others find the root cause of their limiting beliefs, uproot them and, step into a vibrant life.   Meg is now a spiritual entrepreneur on a mission to inspire others to build the purpose driven business of their dreams. In just one year after completing Spirit Junkie Masterclass, Meg’s led four beautiful and powerful women’s retreats. The next one is a women’s self-awakening and connection retreat in Guatemala - where you can connect with the earth, the Mayan culture and try sacred plant medicine. It’s in October and there are a few spots left. Go to her website for more details.     Kelly Lynn Adams As a type A personality, Kelly was always doing, always striving, always busy, and never taking time out for herself. Little wonder, she was burnt out and struggling with her weight and autoimmune issues. Kelly knew that if she felt better, she’d do better, and she was determined to do something better with her life. So, she stared watching what she was eating, drinking tons of water, moving her body. She lost 40 pounds and healed her chronic thyroid condition, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. How? By mimicking fasting with ProLon - getting her body to think it’s fasting, when you’re actually eating.   Of course, it was a mental journey as well as food. For Lynn, it was about focusing on the present moment, rather than future-tripping. Visualizations, affirmations, and believing before seeing. Detoxing from junk foods, but also junk thoughts, junk people, even junk content (like the news!!). Spirit Junkie Masterclass helped Lynn to trust and know that everything is working out for her highest good. Since then, her career has pivoted, because that trust allowed her to align her business with what matters to her.   Kelly is a certified business leadership and life coach, writer, motivational speaker. She has helped thousands of women build their businesses, shift their mindset and step into their divine power. Check her out at www.kellylynnadams.com.      Michelle De Matheu  Michelle had a spiritual awakening when she recovered from anorexia. She was working as a fashion designer, living in New York, living the dream she’d had since she was 4. But she felt disconnected with her body. She didn’t know how to love herself. Her aha moment came when she realized her eating disorder was a teacher, that it was opening the door to freedom. She knew she had to peel back the layers, forgive and fall in love with herself.   Michelle used yoga and meditation to reconnect with her body. Reading about the benefits of food helped her reshape her beliefs around eating. By looking at the benefits of food, rather than counting calories, helped her realize that food could help her, and was not something to be afraid of. On this journey, she began to share her struggles, what she was learning and her passion for healing food.   For Michelle, the best thing about Spirit Junkie Masterclass is the community, the powerful spirit junkie tribe that keeps her motivated and keeps her energy up. The class also gave her the tools to apply spiritual principles to her business routine and gave her the kick to take action, come out of the spiritual business closet, and step into what she really felt called to do. Now, she’s a mind, body and soul stylist, a motivator, life coach and speaker who supports people to transform their lives from the inside out.   Michelle’s powerful self-love practices: Affirmations spoken out loud in front of the mirror Prayer - which helps you to connect with the universe Recognize that divinity is already within you Forgive yourself and others Cultivate trust in your intuition and in the flow of life Prepare your food at home and put love into that food     Alana Haldan Vegan recipe developer, food photographer and blogger behind Sprouts and Krauts. Alana turns the produce from her garden into delicious, colorful, plant-based food.   Making the shift to veganism completely changed Alana’s life journey. She originally tried veganism because she wanted a quick fix to get fit and lose weight before a big event. But within a few weeks, she saw the ethical and environmental aspects it was having and that’s what kept her on the path. From being a graphic designer, she went back to school to learn how to implement vegan cooking and nutrition in her life and share it with the world.   Now, she runs the vegan blog sproutsandkrauts, which is all about fermented foods and recipes made from the produce she grows in her garden.   For Alana, food is all about connection. Being aware of the mind body connection - eating in a way that serves the body and helps you get to your highest self. So many people are stuck in a cycle of eating foods that make them feel sluggish and depressed. But it’s possible to choose foods that enhance health, that nourish the body and nourish the soul. And being vegan doesn’t just help your body, it helps the planet and the animals.   After taking Spirit Junkie Class Digital, Alana learnt to tap into her own potential and know that it’s imperative to share her gifts with the world. It helped her become more aware of her own food triggers and go from using food to numb her emotions to using food to nourish body and soul. Connect with her on Instagram!     Dano González Yoga and meditation teacher, angel therapist practitioner and oracle card reader, medium, and owner of Numen yoga restaurant.   Dano used to be a carnivore. He ate meat three times a day. But one day he realized he felt angry all the time, and stressed, and anxious, and always sleepy. He began meditating, and that allowed him to realize that what he was putting in his mouth was affecting his entire being. He began to eat more plant foods, and things began to shift.   Did you know meat has no energy, or prana? Worse, it has the energy of the animal that was tortured and killed. Fear, anger, suffering - these energies are in the meat and end up in your body. Organic vegetables, on the other hand, energize you, cleanse you, and improve your intuition.   How to detox and start shifting your health: Eliminate all animal foods from your diet Add green smoothies and green juices Go organic as often as possible Minimize your intake of vegan processed foods Increase your intake of fresh foods   Dano opened his restaurant Nümen to help people eat healthy plant-based foods that are so full of flavor it encourages them to open their minds to make the transition to veganism.   Since Spirit Junkie Masterclass, Dano found his voice, found his story, claimed his power and found a family. The first class he launched afterward the course attracted over 3k followers. “Spirit Junkie helps us be the spiritual leaders that our hearts are calling us to be.” Dano’s advice when it comes to Spirit Junkie: “You have to do it, and your life is going to change for the best.”   Follow him on Instagram!   Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!   The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! When Michelle decided to stop performing, she the first thing she did was get a bridge job. She took a job that while allowing her to pay her bills (important, right?), didn't take much out of her so she had energy to build her business. I think it's important to stress that a bridge job doesn't need to fuel your creativity, in fact, a job like that may drain your energy for building your business. For Michelle, her bridge job was as an executive assistant at a financial firm. That's quite a 180 from musical theatre, and worth thinking on for you too. We all have an inner voice that pops up and tries to let us know what is right or wrong for us. Only, many of us have spent years, if not decades ignoring that voice. For Michelle, that voice was trying to give her a bit of course correction, saying "you don't want to do this anymore for your job, for your career. You don't want to go to Idaho and be in Peter Pan for $300." Think about what your inner voice has been telling you. What would listening to it mean for you? Michelle said it best, so here it is, "I call that my Oh Crap Balls Moment, because it's not, I think there is such a fallacy in society where when you find the job you're supposed to be doing or the career you're supposed to be doing in the business are supposed to be running, the angels sing and you feel like Snow White in the forest with the animals and everything is wonderful in the rose-colored glasses are on all the time. (And, i)t is not the case in the vast majority of my clients, it was not the case for me. It was more of a slow burn of like, well, this sounds ridiculous and this feels really hard. But, I guess now I'm going to be a life coach of all weird, crazy things." Follow your weird, follow your difficult, follow your fulfillment. It's worth it. I don’t consider myself an introvert, but man, can I tell you that Michelle from the blog Michelle is Money Hungry makes me reconsider my personality type?  :-) She is the most outgoing, approachable, no-nonsense, hardworking, all around fun FIRE journeyer we’ve talked to.  What other F.I. interviewee is getting to F.I. by writing romance novels? She’s got Wendy and I thinking… Who is Michelle Our previous guests overcame difficult obstacles on their F.I. journey, but for the most part, they followed pretty straight-laced paths in order to Reach F.I.  Michelle is having none of that. Her approach is very different. She is the daughter of a single mom. Michelle lives in Colorado and embraces that awesome Colorado outdoor lifestyle.  And in terms of money, She is embracing and chronicling her credit card and student loan pay off journey, and she is doing it as a freelancer. Beyond all of that - which we will get into of course - she never stopped living.  She travels, she auditions for TV Shows, she has a huge personality, and she is hustling her way to debt free. Michelle’s Money Story Michelle’s childhood began as a part of a two-parent household. However,  as a result of divorce, Michelle went from living in a two-parent home with a SAHM to a single parent home with a working mother.   Michelle was greatly affected by this change, and through the process, her money story began to change.   Money lessons abounded at this time - and these money lessons were shrouded in negativity.  She learned that “money is scarce” and that “money is hard to make”. She states, “...money was used to survive  - and we were in survival mode”. As soon as Michelle had the chance, she began working so that she could escape the difficulties of being in survival mode on her mom’s one income.  She went head to head with her mom, as she began to take the income from her first job at the sandwich shop, and use it to purchase expensive clothes. Looking back, she states she needed to have these moments of growth with money - she needed them in order to learn the independence that money can bring. Michelle's FIREry Evolution Michelle admits that she came from generations of frugality, but these generations lacked true financial education.  In order to set herself on a strong foundation financially, Michelle had to almost strip herself down and allow herself to be built back up by the personal finance information she learned.   She started from square one. Michelle focused on adjusting her money mindset along the way, noting that: “a lot of women of color end up in jobs where we are in service to others, and there is a negative energy around wanting to earn money for ourselves, for wanted to be stable, for envisioning your life in a different way”. She was determined to go through the FIRE in one piece - coming out on the other side a financially savvy, independent and RICH Black female. Getting Off The Sidelines Michelle is a firm believer in taking action, much like Wendy and I. In fact, she believes that we are in a current phase of online growth where if you choose not to participate in the process, you will miss your chance.  Windows of opportunity are closing. She implores listeners to find ways to create income that has nothing to do with external employers - income that is for them and by them.    So, what are the ways Michelle Earns Money? Brand Ambassador Michelle earned $22/hr or more sharing a product that she likes. She was paid weekly. Affiliate marketing For Michelle, her affiliates have to be win-win.  She only shares products, goods, and services that she uses personally. She is not a great credit card user, so she doesn’t share credit card affiliates.  It has to be consistent with what you say. Course Creation Michelle created a writing course in which she teaches others the details -from start to finish - for creating their own e-book.  She talks about the ins and outs of the process and has Live Calls and a closed Facebook Group for author support. If you've ever thought about publishing a book, this course is a great place to start. All of the content is there to go through at your own pace, and there are different levels for different budgets. You can find those links on our website and houseoffi.com Published Author Michelle has written her own romance novels and her own non-fiction book about visiting Colorado!  These books took time to write, but now continue selling month after month. Event Creator Michelle is running her first ever single ladies retreat in October 2019.  Here is a link if you are such a lady and want to attend: Money on the Mountain Retreat on the Mountain. Freelance Writer Michelle writes for blogs and other publications on a consistent basis.  Pay can be per article or on retainer Balancing Personal Finance and Personal Life Michelle hiked during the middle of the day at her old job - just to get outside in nature when the craving hit.   She makes sure that time with friends, mom, fitness, nature - is built into her life so that she can decompress. She believes you should be very deliberate to make sure that you always come first.   “I am already living my dreamed FI life...now I just need the money to go with it” she says. Michelle on the final questions: Money Lesson: My mom is super frugal and thank God for that.  She taught me how to find a good deal. Favorite Life Hacks: Meetup, Eventbrite and Facebook Events are the best places for FREE/FUN things to do. This year alone she has been to the following for free or a discount →  Liquor tastings, Morton’s Steakhouse, Free or Discounted Yoga (including puppy yoga). The November Project - use their city as their workout space and is free. Best Way to Find Michelle At her blog or Podcast! Listen to our previous episode with  Whitney Hansen here.

Michelle serves on the investment committee of OneVentures three main Funds, leads the technology practice within the firm and is responsible for investor relations managing the supervisory boards of OneVentures funds. As well as being a VC, Michelle is also a scientist who double majored in Physics and Chemistry. Michelle has always had a passion for science, holding a Bachelor of Science (Honours 1st class), Master of Science a PhD (Applied Science), and her first role was in mineral physics at CSIRO. For Michelle, science teaches you how to learn. In the late nineties Michelle built an e-commerce store called Giftvouchers.com, which she started by owning every gift voucher domain name before turning it into one of the first Australian Fintech companies. Michelle raised $6.5M from HNW's to fund the venture, as they pivoted to B2B to manage 700M retailer gift cards across Australia. They sold the business in 2005 which was then acquired by a publicly listed UK company.Michelle spent the next year travelling back and forth to the UK and it was hear she got her first taste of angel investing, with UK business MyPay. This would lead her to launch the venture firm, OneVentures in 2006, a time when raising a fund was almost impossible. The firm has invested in 17 companies; recent investments include a nanopatch company, Vaxxas, that could be a game changer as it replaces needles for vaccinations and Smart Sparrow, which allows for adaptive lessons and rich media. It is now used by more than 200 institutions and has created hundreds of jobs. They’ve also currently achieved 3 exits with a couple more coming through in the pipeline.OneVentures is currently raising a $100m for Australia’s first venture debt fund and this year, will complete about 5 deals averaging a check size of $5-10m.Michelle is a trailblazer, being the first female founder of a venture fund in Australia, in fact according to Larry Marshall (CSIRO) she was at one point the only female founding venture partner in the southern hemisphere! Perhaps no one else in the world more appreciates the challenges facing a better understanding of autism than Michelle Dawson. An autistic herself, she began researching her condition after experiencing discrimination at her job. "Because I had to address these legal issues and questions," she tells Tyler, "I did actually look at the autism literature, and suddenly I had information I could really work with. Suddenly there it was, this information that I was supposed to be too stupid to work with." And so she continued reading papers - lots and lots of papers - and is now an influential researcher in her own right. For Michelle, the best way to understand autism is to think of it as atypical information processing. Autistic brains function differently, and these highly varied divergences lead to biases and misunderstanding among typical thinkers, including autism researchers. In her conversation with Tyler, she outlines the current thinking on autism, including her ideas about cognitive versatility and optionality, hyperlexia and other autistic strengths, why different tests yield wildly different measures of IQ among autistics, her 'massive bias' against segregating autistics, how autistic memory is different, why sometimes a triangle is just a freaking triangle, and more. I’m your host Slade Roberson. For eleven years, I’ve been a professional intuitive and the author of the blog Shift Your Spirits, where I try to write about spirituality with fewer hearts and flowers than most New Age blather. I also mentor emerging intuitives, psychics, and healers in a program called Automatic Intuition. Today, I’m sharing a conversation with Michelle Vandepas about aligning with your purpose. And, of course, as always, there’s an oracle segment at the end of the show. So be thinking about a question or a concern you have. Hold it in your mind, and I’ll come back on, after the final links and credits, and leave you with that extra message. And to tell you the truth, I am personally really looking forward to what that message is going to be! You may not realize this, but I use them for myself. It’s Friday, October 13, 2017 as I record this, and it feels a bit like the sky is falling. We’ve got wild fires in Northern California, people starting to die in Puerto Rico from drinking water out of creeks and ditches, going weeks without power or cell service… and millions of us in the US are about to lose our healthcare coverage. I really don’t know how much to address current events on the podcast, because the majority of you are listening from the future. Thousands of you. I want the content to be evergreen—meaning it can speak to you at whatever point in time you are listening. There is great power in the synchronicity of when you receive these messages. And even if I try to be super current with events in the present, they’re going to be a week behind, at best. So much changes, day to day... So, if I seem like I’m saying too little, not saying enough, or seeming to ignore something that happened this morning or went down in a big way yesterday, it’s just because recording is a snapshot in time, but the messages transcend time, to come and find you in your now. I am attempting to make content that has that ability. I am admittedly dancing around this. Awkwardly. If you have any input about how you’d like me to handle timely events, I would love to hear your suggestions. Shoot me an email. If you’re fine with my making these episodes entirely timeless, email me and let me know that too. Before I forget, I want to say a quick thank you to Merrie Kisch, my newest supporter on Patreon. And also thank you to Ann Luke-Montez who raised her pledge amount. I appreciate all of you who have pledged your support and I’m really excited to see the new names each week. It demonstrates that you’re enjoying the show and want it to continue. That’s very encouraging to me, thank you. Listen, I’ve lost a lot of people who are angry that I am communicating in audio. I have gone to great trouble to make most if not all the episodes available as a written transcript — today’s episode with Michelle about aligning with your purpose does indeed have a full transcript. For the record, there are eleven years worth of posts — hundreds if not thousands of articles — available on my site. Go to sladeroberson.com/archives There’s a search feature and tons to read. But I’m still getting emails from long-term followers who are disappointed. They don’t like the change. They want me to go back to short blog posts once a week. And you know, this platform has to grow and evolve. I needed to make this new and exciting and to breathe new life into Shift Your Spirits with this audio. Working with me is essentially talking to me, and I know from the feedback from those of you who love the show that it is authentically aligned with my voice. I’m telling you this because I want you to know that pledging your support on Patreon is one of the ways that you tell me to make this show for you and to ignore those who are sending me, well, hate mail for making this show. Some people do not like change. Change is the only thing in the world you can rely on. You gotta be a change surfer. You gotta learn to adapt and be flexible in all areas of life… But to wrap up this rant — it’s not just a “pledge drive” when I tell you about Patreon. It really literally is you saying “Slade, I love this podcast. I’m out here listening. I find the shows meaningful and helpful. Please keep sending me episodes." …I will. I plan to. Listeners who support the show on Patreon can access bonus Q&A episodes, where you guys send in questions, I record answers to them, and they go out to patrons of the show exclusively. I just released a bonus episode “How to Manifest a Relationship” as a tie-in to the show on soul mates. You guys who are supporters will find that download in the posts section on Patreon. You can edit your pledge amount at any time, like Ann did, if you decide you want to access the bonus audio. Let’s get to this week’s interview. Purpose. It’s one of our favorite subjects to talk about. And I’ve found someone perfect for us to talk to. Michelle Vandepas. TRANSCRIPT of INTERVIEW Slade: So, by way of introduction, for those of you out there who may not have heard of Michelle Vandepas, Michelle, why don't you tell us who you are and what you do. Michelle: So... Wow. I am a - so that's a great question, right? I suddenly realize I don't know how to put myself in a box of who I am and what I do. So I'm an author. I write. I'm a coach. I'm a business coach. I'm a book publisher. I'm a TEDx speaker. Those are all my accomplishments. But really who I am is someone who is highly concerned about the energy in the world and how I believe when we all are connected to our authentic self, when we're on purpose, when we feel alive and we feel aligned with who we are, that we can help change the planet to be a better place. Slade: Well, you know, in the time that I've known you, and we were just chatting before we started recording, about how we've known each other for probably ten years. And in that time, I've seen you do all the things that you're talking about. The TED talks, courses, workshops, masterminds, in a lot of areas that obviously are connected and make sense. But I'm wondering how did helping people align with their purpose become your purpose? How did you identify - how did you land here? Michelle: Yeah, good question. So what's really interesting is I've always been doing this in my business coaching, and back 20 years ago when I owned a business, a manufacturing business, it was a lot of coaching the employees and the staff members about how they could contribute the best in the work place. So I feel like I've always been coaching other people to be on Purpose. How I kind of came full circle and decided to devote the next few years of my life to helping people with it is I think when we're not feeling aligned with our own Purpose, everything else is just slightly off kilter or out of whack. So it's very difficult to run a business if you don't feel like you're doing what you're here to do. It's difficult to raise a family if you're always in stress about it and you don't feel aligned. So no matter where you are in your life, it comes back to understanding who you are at the core and then I know you relate to this. You write about Purpose all the time, Slade, so I think there's something fundamental that when we can accept who we are, know that we are here for a reason, that we can feel on Purpose with our lives, it helps everything else unfold. It helps all other areas of our life. So I think that's where I feel I can make the biggest difference. Slade: Okay. So Life Purpose. You hear those two words together a lot. It's a tricky thing to identify. I can tell you right now that this show will get tons of downloads just from that keyword or phrase in the title. I've seen it before. As you said, I do write about Purpose and speak to people about it and it's probably in 99% of the conversations I have with people when I do readings. So the thing is, back to the idea that it's a little tricky to identify. For a lot of people, it gets mixed up with creative passions, hobbies, jobs, career tracks, maybe it's a little of all of those things. Just tell me how do you define Purpose? Michelle: Yeah, I love this conversation. So the way I view Purpose is you're already living it. Everybody is already living it. Even if they don't know what it is. It is just something that is inside of us. And Purpose is how we express out into the world. In the very biggest picture, like the hugest picture, is how we express our love into the world. But that's difficult because love comes with so many romantic notions that it's hard to always wrap our brain around that. So let me give you an example. I like to work with archetypes when I'm talking about Purpose because I think it helps us relate a little bit easier. Most of us can relate to feeling like we're a teacher, we are a leader, we're a caregiver, we might have mom or dad energy, we might feel like we're a nurturer. These are energies. These are expressions of a way to give back or to live our life. But they don't have really anything to do with a vocation or a hobby or a job or a passion. So if you identify with, let's say, the caregiver archetype, you enjoy helping people, you like to nurture other people. You may or may not become a nurse or a hospice provider. You might be able to live that archetype through being a teacher or through being a barista or through blogging. That archetype can come through many many ways. And that's usually something that we're born with. That's an essence of our soul about how we express out into the world. If you don't feel identified with that archetype, if you don't feel like you're a caregiver, it's not going to be the first thing that is expressed out while you're out in your world. So to bring this back around, if you have a job in - let's just say you're a blogger, you will naturally tie into your gifts that you were born with, such as teacher or leader or inspirer or caregiver, through your writing, when you feel more connected with the archetype of your individual purpose. Does that make sense? Slade: Hmm.. oh yeah! Actually I really love this. I love the archetypes, and that's a good filter to view this from. Because it's sort of like an ingredient, like you said it's an essence, and you can put that essence in a lot of different places. Right? Like it sort of comes out of you no matter where we put you. If you're a nurturer, or a natural cheerleader, it doesn't really matter if you're literally on a sports team or you're just working in a bank. Michelle: That's right. Slade: It's gonna kind of express itself to the people around you, right? Michelle: Right. And where I see people get a little disrupt or feel disengaged with Purpose is when they're trying to chase it around their work. So if you know that you're a caregiver then you're suddenly like rolling your eyes and thinking, 'Ah, I gotta go be a nurse.' Well what you said is totally on point. That no, start with what you're already doing in your life and notice how caregiving shows up. Or notice how cheerleading shows up. When you start noticing what you're already doing in all areas of your life, you'll feel more connected. And as you start feeling more connected, then you're willing to express it more. You're willing - because then you have proof that yes, this is who I am, right? The world becomes our mirror and we go, 'Yes, I am a cheerleader.' This is awesome. People respond to this. And then we do more of it naturally. Slade: Hmm... So what else do you think people tend to kind of get wrong when they go looking for their Purpose? Like you said, when they go chasing it and they get off track, what's some other... 101 bungles... Michelle: Yeah. I'm the perfect poster child for this, right? We always teach what we learn, or we teach what we need to learn, whatever that saying is. So a great example is, I had a period of my life when I became very engaged with my artistic side of myself. And I loved painting, and doing all kinds of creative endeavors and I spent hours and hours... I had some luxury of time back then, and spent a lot of time developing my creative self and my artistic self and I went to workshops and I had some shows and I suddenly had this light bulb - wow this must be my Purpose. And so I decided, I set up shop, I set up my own art exhibits, I suddenly was investing in getting things framed and having to sell things and then I was asked to do a couple of commissions and I'm like, oh man, I hate this so much. It's like, my passion and my creative expression suddenly turned into a job. Because I had mistakenly thought my Purpose was related to my passion. And I can have a passion for art that isn't necessarily my Purpose. My Purpose is more about inspiration, teaching, leading, and I can do those things through my art, but the art itself was not my purpose. Slade: I'm actually kind of comforted to hear you say this because I live an entirely second life as a fiction author. So I have this, these two worlds, or two roles, and sometimes it just makes me uncomfortable trying to have to make them both be about the same thing. And I really just learn to kind of let them be two things and in my mind, my Purpose feels like it's related around Shift Your Spirits, it's what you know me for, it's very much what you do as well, inspiring, enabling, coaching, supporting people, teaching, telling stories. And then, you know, the other thing is an art. It is a passion and it's a hobby. It's also business but it doesn't have to be - everything doesn't have to be in one box, right? Michelle: Um hmm... let me ask you a question. In your fiction writing, do you feel as though you're bringing any of your inner Purpose like inspiring, and leading, and those things through any of your dialogue or your characters? I'm just curious. Could be yes or no. Slade: Yeah, I actually ask myself this question a lot because I feel like it's not so on the nose that I feel like my stories have to be inspirational reader's digest type fiction or something. Or like some - I don't write stories about people who are on a spiritual mission or anything like that. So I have asked myself this question and I think it's more about a deeper emotional kind of journey. The ability to give someone another life in another world to experience, which is so much of what I get out of reading fiction, and I think that there's a case to be made for story-telling being such a huge part of so many areas of what we do in the world whether it's ministry or teaching or just entertainment. Stories are big business and they're big soulful enterprises in and of themselves. So I think where I come down with it is I feel like my magic comes in the form of words. And I have always had a gift for storytelling and sometimes that includes hosting someone like you and creating a platform for you to tell a story. You know what I'm saying? Michelle: Yes, that's beautiful. Slade: Yeah and I can make a case that we're all storytellers and, I do tell some of my intuitive training students a lot that I think intuitives - storytellers make great intuitives. People who speak symbolic language have an ability to take that vocabulary into a lot of different vocations. So, again, not to get too much in the weeds about myself personally, but we're coming back to this idea that it's an essence that you already have and it's something that you can take into anywhere we drop you. Right? Like, ultimately if you're wiling to. Michelle: That's right. And I just want to circle back around with you because you also blog and you write and you've been doing this a long time and obviously these podcasts. So you have a gift with words and that writing and podcasting is just one way you're choosing to express that gift. You could choose to express that gift maybe in song writing, or maybe something that I haven't even thought of. Writing copy. You're just choosing to express your gift of a way with words in these platforms right now. Doesn't mean blogging suddenly is your Purpose. Slade: Right, yes. Exactly. And I have had periods where I was a song writer and I was a - I've done different kinds of artistic pursuits just like you were talking about. The difference between kind of your creativity and your passion and your art and then you can, you can or you can not choose to express that in combination with a Purpose or in combination with a job. I tell people all the time sometimes the greatest way to ruin your passion is to turn it into a business. Michelle: Yeah! Like my art! Exactly. Slade: So when I was thinking about the fact that I was going to be talking to you today and I thought, you know, this is an area of expertise for you, that you've gone even deeper in than I have, but I was trying to think of my listeners and kind of where they fall on this question. Because like I said, it's nearly always a component of any reading that I do. And I was trying to think of, how can I ask questions that the people listening would ask if they were sitting here in front of the microphone and I kind of identified - there's a few different people that are at different stages of asking themselves this question. So I wondered if you would indulge me and let me ask you kind of a question, there's kind of three different angles. And I wanted to ask for advice for each one of those people. Are you game for that? Michelle: I'm game! Slade: Okay! Michelle: Let's see where it goes! Slade: So, the first one is the person who has no clue what their Purpose is. They really feel like just the canvas is blank, and that's a very terrifying feeling. You know, the blank page and you don't, something's supposed to be written on there and you don't know what it is. So what do you say to that person who has no clue what their Purpose might be? Michelle: Yeah, great. So and this comes up a lot with the people I work with, who maybe their kids are now gone, or their job is over or they're retiring and they feel like, now what? But it can happen with people of all ages for a variety of reasons. And the first thing that I want to tell the listeners is really to reassure them that it really doesn't matter if you know your Purpose. It's like it doesn't matter if you can see the ocean. It's still there. Your Purpose is there. Now you may feel a little frustrated that you don't know what it is. You may feel disconnected to it. But it's there. It's inside of you. So I would encourage listeners who are in this space to just breathe in to the fact that they are alive on the planet, they have a Purpose even if they don't know what it is. And allow it. Allow the expression of their Purpose to be shown to them over some time. In my book it's a 28-day process of journalling and asking questions. But the first stage of that is to live with the affirmation that I am already living my Purpose. Slade: Okay. That's awesome. What do you say to the person who kind of already has a clue what it is, right? They know deep down in their heart what their Purpose is. They feel that calling but maybe they're in a state of fear or procrastination, you know, they're sitting in the cubicle at work and they're dissatisfied with what they're doing and they know what their heart wants to do or what they're being called to do in some way. What does she do next? How does she get started? Michelle: So first I would encourage not the DOING of it. And I would really encourage the BEING of it. Because I think what happens is we skip steps. We're like, 'Okay I know that I'm supposed to be out there speaking to the world.' Well speaking again is a doing. It's not a Purpose. So is the Purpose really that you would like to inspire people with the message? Is your Purpose that you feel like you're a leader, that you have a calling to change other people's lives through leading or through inspiration or - it's tricky because it's like you have a gift for speaking and that's the gift and that could be how your Purpose is done and expressed in the world but we gotta go first underneath that - what the BEING is. And so, I would encourage people who know deep inside that they're supposed to go speak, that comes up a lot with my clients. "I know I'm supposed to go speak." Be out there on stage. Be more visible. I'd encourage you first to tap into what is it that your call - what is it that calls that part of yourself? Are you feeling like you're here to lead? And then keep going into that energy and express it more and more in what you do right now. So if you are called to lead, do that in the job you have right now. Do that with your family. Do that as you move about the world. And as you're deepening that confidence in yourself, it's amazing how opportunities start opening up to allow you to do more of how you want to express that feeling in the world. Slade: Okay. These are good. I'm having some epiphanies around this stuff. So I've got one more. It's a little challenging. And I can actually think of a couple people that I know that are peers that are out there who might be listening, who - okay, what do you say to the person who knows what his Purpose is, maybe he's been doing it for awhile, who's been working at it, and then suddenly he's not seeing the "success" with it that he had expectations for? What's going on with that person, when they feel like they're, they know what they're supposed to do, but for some reason it's not taking off the way that they think, "Oh! It's my Purpose. I'm doing it, therefore the wings should just spread open and I should fly." What do you say to the person when that's not happening? Michelle: So, Purpose is being, and Purpose is not success-driven. So Purpose is back to how do you express your love in the world? How do you express yourself out into the world? If you were then taking that and let's just pretend that you're here to inspire other people and your chosen way to do that is to become a public speaker, then you have to learn the business of speaking, you have to learn the nuances, you have to understand how to book gigs, how to write contracts, you have to then go learn the pieces of running that business if that's choosing, if that's how you're going to choose to express your Purpose of inspiration out into the world. But again, and then I do business coaching as well, so I can speak to this. Your Purpose is how you're expressing in the world in all areas of your life and so if you're putting, 'OMG, my Purpose is all wrapped up in this business,' you're going to have heartache and downfall because business has natural ups and down cycles. And so you've got to come back and be grounded in who you are. I want to come back for a minute because I think there's a piece here that we've tiptoed around a little bit, Slade. And that is, people feel scared of their Purpose. Like if Slade, you know, think back ten or twelve years ago and if you suddenly knew that you were here to inspire people about Purpose and how they can become intuitive, you may not know, have known how to do that. All those years ago. And there might have been some fear for you. Slade: Oh yes. Michelle: And so... Right? It's all of us. And so if we can go into what is it that we are expressing and continue to do that every day we strengthen the muscle of accepting who we are. If someone were to tell me that I'd be on the telesummits with thousands of people and coaching some fairly well-known names out there, ten years ago, I would've been terrified. And go, 'No, I don't have those skills. That's not me. I don't have that confidence. I don't have that knowingness,' right? And so we start by giving ourselves either small steps or big steps, whatever it is, but confirmation that we're on the right track. Because that builds that muscle that gives us our own acceptance. I think when we don't accept the gifts that we were born with, it's really difficult to go be - feel successful, but feeling successful is a life, not just a business. It's how do we feel in our life? Do we feel fulfilled? So I think I want to come back around to - it's the feeling of being fulfilled that I think we chase, and money seems to represent that and business success represents that. But let's come back to how are we expressing, how are we ful - being fulfilled, how are we helping, how are we serving, and then maybe it's business coaching that this person really needs. Slade: Great advice. Thank you so much. So tell us about Spark. What is this? Michelle: So I think you know I've played a lot with this idea of Purpose, passion, fulfillment creativity, and the word that sums all of that up for me is Spark. And so I've created a system for helping us all keep that spark alive inside. I don't know how you feel, but you know we're just on the other side of another mass shooting here in the United States, we've had hurricanes, there's fires, there's wars all over the world. It feels like it's pretty difficult sometimes to stay grounded that we can even make a difference with all these world problems. And so, getting in touch with our own spark is the beginning of feeling alive and then feeling like we can help in whatever way that looks like to us. Big or small, helping the local food community, helping a stray cat, helping stop genocide and wars, wherever it is that you personally feel like you're called to help. It starts with connecting with that spark inside of us. Because when that flame starts dying out, it's really difficult to even just get off the couch, right? We become glued to the news, we get into overwhelm. So the system I've created are always different areas where we learn to connect in with our own spark so that we can express more fully our authentic selves. And, like I say in this book, Purpose book, which is the first step of the system, how can we not be authentic, right? We are authentic. We just don't always recognize what that is. And then we try to cover it up, or we have our baggage or we eat too much or we do all kinds of self sabotaging things because we don't really know who we are. And so this system takes us through some self-reflection. I'm not here to tell anybody who they are. It's all inside. We just have to uncover it. We have to recognize it. We have to love who we are, you know? It's that thing that we gotta love ourselves first. And it's true, but we have to learn who we are so that we can love ourselves. Slade: So the book part component of this that you're talking about, it's a new book you have out called Purpose: The Alignment Guide : 28 Days of Inspiration, Reflection, Intention and Creative Expression. Now this sounds more like a program than just a book. So explain to us how this book works. Michelle: Yeah, it is. It's 28 days. Each day, wel, each week there's an affirmation. The very first one is 'I am already living my Purpose.' And there's coloring exercises ,activities, writing prompts, and the book takes you through my thoughts about why I believe we're all already living our Purpose. Just a short chapter on that. And then it encourages you to reflect on how you are living your Purpose day to day. There are daily affirmations, daily questions, the book takes you through how does the earth energy affect you? I'm finding it very interesting right now with things like fires and hurricanes and so forth to not be affected by that, and I think a lot of us are affected by intense weather or even just a big snowstorm. And so, how does that affect your day to day living, and does that make you go more internal or does that cause you to be angry in the world? And just having a place to write down and explore these feelings helps you understand and learn more of who you really are. Who we are at the core. So the book is a 28-day exploration with writing prompts for every day. Journaling and loads of cool coloring pages and there's also a coloring book that you can download at no cost or purchase to go along with this with all the really cool images. And the images are a little edgy. They're not like flowers and butterflies. They're what I call kind of galactic images with weird eyes and the sun going sideways because I think that's how I feel right now. Like everything just a little big sideways. And so I want to acknowledge that and express that. And the Purpose is just the first workbook in a 9-month system. So there's 8 more books coming out, each one exactly the same format. So it's a 9-month program that I have on helping you connect back in with who you are. Slade: So why is it 28 days specificially? Michelle: Yeah, so there's a couple of answers to that. It is a nice system of every week you look at a new affirmation and in this case, a new area of Purpose. And then we all need a day or two or three to just rest. So it's not like a month-long system. You can start this in the middle of the month, you can start it in the middle of the week, you just work through the days and then you, at the end of the 28 days, it's a moon cycle, it's a natural cycle. You just rest, let it all integrate, allow your subconscious to process everything you've been thorough. It's like savassana in yoga. You just incorpirate everything that you have learned and thought about and doodled and processed over the last four weeks. And then after a few more days, you can start again on the next book. Day 1 and go through another 28-day process. Slade: Very cool. It actually would be fun to do that with the moon cycle if you wanted. I'm a bit of a witch so I like to do everything like ritualized around the moon calendar. It just, it gives it a certain kind of structure that feels, I don't know, it feels empowering, so I like to play with that. That's very cool. Michelle: Yes! Yeah! Slade: So, not to compare this to anything in any way other than a compliment, but I really, as I was looking at the material, it appealed to me in much the same way that the artist way appealed to me. I think that there's a certain type of person who may have done that years ago back in the day who would really be turned on by your book. Thank you! Thank you. I actually mention Julia Cameron in my dedication. She's a huge mentor of mine. I have interviewed her a couple of times. I've been to a live workshop of hers. I bow down to her as one of the creative goddesses of the world, so thank you, I take that as a huge compliment. Slade: Oh, that's very cool. We share her as a hero for sure. Yeah, so I definitely think that you can make a connection with the type of work that you're doing and so if there's anybody who - because I know once you've done something before, maybe you don't really want to go back through that process again, but this would be something new, and it's a little bit shifted of course, around this idea of aligning with Purpose, but the experiential part of it feels similar. In an exciting kind of way. Have you had any ideas about doing like a group around it? Like a Facebook group or something? Michelle: Yes! So - thank you for asking. Yes, and I have one going right now. So theSpark.love group on Facebook. You can come and join for free. No charge. There are people uploading their pictures and their doodling and I answer questions in there, and so thespark.love is also my website. That's the name of the group on Facebook. So just come join and then obviously I offer paid classes and I have a live retreat coming up in May, so obviously I'm doing this also as part of my own coaching business, but everybody come and join at least for free so we can get to know each other and I can help you through the process. And then if there's a next step, happy to talk to you about that. Slade: Oh that's very cool. I am a big believer in the social power of doing things in groups. If I have the opportunity to take something in a class environment I always go for that because I can accomplish so much more when I have interaction with other people around it. I'm a big believer in that so basically you're saying somebody can go and sign up for thespark.love Facebook group and the only thing that they would really require would be the book, which is not a huge investment, if they wanted to really participate in this and plug in with this whole concept, right? Michelle: That's right. $16.95 on Amazon, and nothing else. Just connect in the group because there's other people that are having conversations about Purpose and that's always a cool thing. Slade: Well I'll definitely pull all your links so anybody who is listeining can either go to my blog or they can go direclty to the podcast feed and just click on those. And go and sign up. You also have a free course that people can download on your webiste, correct? Michelle: I do. There's a Purpose course on my website, there's the coloring book, there's a couple of meditations. The website is again, thespark.love because it's how we express our spark as love out into the world. That's the biggest expression of who we are. And so, yes, I have all kinds of free gifts. I have a downloadable course. Come get your gifts, thank you! Thank you for this promotion, yeah. I'm so good at promoting other people but we're all like that, right? Thank you. Slade: Yeah, well there's some very specific places to jump and plug in to what you're doing and it doesn't cost anything other than your interest, you know? So it's a very powerful and easy thing to promote. I do want to ask you before we wrap up the conversation. One of the things that I really like to ask those of you who've been around working in this space, for several years now. Is there anything that you feel is a message that's kind of missing from the conversation on personal development or something that needs to be brought forward a little bit? Michelle: Yeah, good question. So I am so over self-improvement. Like, there was a time in my life when I'm like, I wanted to get my hands on everything around self-improvement and personal development. These days I think it's - the conversation at least that I like to have is, we don't have to improve anything. We can choose to explore our gifts and develop them if we want to. We can always learn more things. But it's really about what, uncovering what's already there. It's really about going inside rather than looking outside and the more I go deeper in this, the more I know that to be true for at least myself and many of the people I work with is, how can we really uncover who we are rather than looking outside for answers? And so, in this book, even though I'm here having this conversation with you, it all comes back to what is true for the individual, not what I'm saying, not what you're saying, not what my book says. These are all tools to help you explore more deeply what's true for you. Slade: I love that approach. Thank you for sharing that. And Michelle, thank you so much for coming on and taking the time and having a conversation with me around this topic. I know everybody's going to enjoy listening to it. Michelle: Slade, I love you. It's been an honor to connect with you over all these years and I'm looking forward to the next one. Thank you for having me. OUTRO Thanks again for listening to the Shift Your Spirits podcast. So take a moment to think about that — hold it in your mind or speak it out loud. I’ll pause for just a few seconds….right…now. 1…2…3…4 MESSAGE Have you seen or heard any owls lately? Any owl totems or symbols crossing your path. Owl energy is about the ability to see everything around you, to find the real truth in the shadows. This symbol can mean that someone around you is trying to throw you off or disguise his or her real intentions. Make sure you’re not lying to yourself right now. If you’re being delusional, wake up. Not facing the truth in one area of your life will block you from moving forward in any other area. Look into your darkness a little bit. That’s where you’ll find the way out. And I’ll talk to you later.

Most people would love to take a year off and experience another culture. The reality is however few give themselves permission to do it – especially where there are three young kids involved. For Michelle and Keith Damiani a one year experience for their family in Spello, Italy was something they had planned for prior to having children and saw no reason to change their plans once the kids arrived! In 2012 they embarked on a one year journey that became more than just covering distance – it was a trip that affected every member of the family deeply – providing both Keith and Michelle with a new perspective on life and their children with increased confidence from taking on a new challenge and coming out the other end as winners. We caught up with Keith and Michelle to discuss their experiences, why they chose to put their children into Italian speaking public schools, how Keith handled the hospital system after a short bout of pneumonia and the secrets to coping with returning home at the end of the journey. You can catch their journey at Michelle’s blog http://michelledamiani.com where she has written a book “Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center” What I learned from talking to Michelle and Keith: Sometimes we can be too protective of our children. Much like the Wagoners Michelle and Keith chose to enroll their children in a local school rather than an international school which provided them with a deeper experience and a chance to learn the local language. Although a sink or swim moment all three children came to love it and gained invaluable confidence as a result. Citizenship is an option if you have long term Italian decent. Although there are boxes to tick and the process can be time consuming it is worth considering if you want to spend a long period of time in any part of the Schengen zone. If you really want to speed it up follow Keith’s lead and move on over! As other interviewees like Daniele Le has discussed there is a huge difference in culture between the more competitive work environment of the US and countries such as Spain, France and Italy where culture is heavily focused around enjoying life and creating a community. Returning from an overseas experience can be a pretty tough landing. It took the Damiani’s a while to settle. Michelle's advice is to accept how you’re feeling and look for opportunities to view your home environment through new eyes.
