Jane Angvik was an Anchorage Charter Commission member who drafted the founding document that unified the city and borough of Anchorage in 1975. On July 1, 2024, she administered the oath of office at the inauguration of Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. Jane has spent her life in service to Alaska whether at her first job for the Anchorage borough as a planner upon her arrival in 1973, working for the Alaska Federation of Natives, serving on the Anchorage Assembly, or training the next generation of leaders through Alaska Women Ascend, the ways that she has contributed to our state and city are many and profound. This episode will discuss much of Jane's life including her childhood in Minnesota and her meeting of her husband Vic Fischer – a founding father of Alaska who we sadly lost last year at the age of 99. This episode will not include Jane's time on the charter commission. That period of her life, which so profoundly impacts what Anchorage is today,  will be its own episode released next week.

I'd Rather Be Reading
Trailblazing Journalist Lynn Povich on Becoming the First Female Senior Editor of Newsweek and the Legacy of the First Female Class Action Lawsuit It Took to Make that Possible

I'd Rather Be Reading

I'm pulling out the champagne and raising a glass to I'd Rather Be Reading, my passion project and the work of my life, a show that celebrates nonfiction books (and, occasionally, some fiction books and children's books and cookbooks, too) which aired its first episode three years ago today, on June 7, 2021. Happy three-year anniversary, listeners! Our very first episode on the show was a conversation with Lisa Napoli about her book Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR, about, at its core, women in journalism. As such, to tie it all together with a bow today, our anniversary special features a trailblazing woman in journalism: the dynamic Lynn Povich. Simply put, my career would not exist without Lynn's courage. Let's go back in time to the early 1970s. Lynn was working at Newsweek, and at the time, that magazine, like others at the time as well, only hired men as writers. Women did the researching and reporting, but the men got the byline. Lynn writes in her 2012 book The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace that Newsweek had a serious problem—sexism—and that, in her words, “we all accepted it—until we didn't.” Lynn and a group of 46 other women ultimately sued the magazine for sex discrimination, becoming the first women in the media to sue for sex discrimination and taking part in the first female class action suit. Lynn's book, Good Girls Revolt, is the first full account of the Newsweek suit, which, by the way, was later turned into a series on Amazon Prime that I loved. Lynn writes that, prior to the lawsuit, “I don't think it occurred to many of us that we could actually change the system” and continues “in 1970 we challenged the system and changed the conversation in the news media for the women who participated in the lawsuits. The struggle rerouted our lives and bonded us and gave many of us opportunities.” Lynn went on to become Newsweek's first female senior editor in 1975 and had a 25-year career at the magazine; she left it in 1991 and has since become editor-in-chief of Working Woman magazine and managing editor and senior executive producer for MSNBC.com. Lynn is from a famed journalism family, and she edited a book of columns by her father, renowned Washington Post sports journalist Shirley Povich called All Those Mornings…At the Post; her brother, by the way, is Maury Povich, and her sister-in-law is Connie Chung. I'd love to be at that family dinner table! Lynn's husband is also a journalist; his name is Stephen Shepard, and he is the former editor-in-chief of Business Week and founding dean of the graduate school of journalism of the City University of New York. There's no better person I could think of to mark this important day for our show than Lynn Povich, and I'm excited for you to hear from her today. This is a rare post for our Spreaker feed. Perhaps we should explain why.We almost never put Hell and High Water out on Spreaker because it is only for members at Ochelli.com and Meria.net. It is also a twice-per-month raw discussion between The Founding Mother of Real Alt-Indie Media and Chuck that is usually loaded with stuff that pisses off nearly everyone devoted to the left/right paradigm and the people of the Blue and many other pills (used as directed, by the medical tyrants of all stripes) without delay. It's a great unscripted vent for 2 East Coasts-raised Italian-American independent thinkers. FYI if you love the right wing or Trump you will hate this. If you love the left and PC culture, You will be offended. If you were not sure if you hated Ochelli before this will settle that uncertain opinion quickly. This hour of the podcast should bother you unless you believe all is well in the world. Abigail Adams and Heroic Mothers Unite   Abigail Adams was one of the Heroic Founding Mothers of the United States of America.   I'm convinced that she and Benjamin Franklin and their families would be part of our Heroic movement if they were alive today.   Why?   Because they were intensely passionate about cultivating virtue in their lives and in the lives of their children.   And…   I'm pretty sure () they would have preferred to have their kids on the soon-to-be-launched social features for our Heroic training platform cultivating virtue together rather than on Tik Tok watching another absurd 20-second video.   What data supports that hypothesis?   Glad you asked…   That's the subject of Today's +1.   Have you ever seen this quote from Abigail?    “These are the times in which a genius would wish to live. It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues. When a mind is raised, and animated by scenes that engage the heart, then those qualities which would otherwise lay dormant, wake into life and form the character of the hero and the statesman.”   After reading a version of that in Warren Bennis' great book On Becoming a Leader, I looked it up to find its source.    It's from a letter she wrote to her son John Quincy Adams in January 1780–almost 243 (!) years ago. He was on a trip to France with his father to elicit support for our Revolutionary War. (Thanks, France!! )   I looked up how old John Quincy Adams was in 1780.    He was 12.    Check out the letter. It's worth reading.    I printed it out and marked it all up because it was so good. (See my notes below.)   As you'll see if you spend a few minutes reading her brilliant letter, Abigail starts out the letter by basically telling her son that she made him go to France with his dad and brother even though he was whining about it.     Seriously. It's so good to see this great woman (a true Founding Mother of America) talking to a future president like, well, he was acting like a 12-year-old.     Then we get to the quote that made me find the letter.    But get this…   Bennis actually MISQUOTED Abigail.    He said that she said: “These are hard times in which a genius should wish to live. . . . Great necessities call forth great leaders.”   But that's not *actually* what she said.    She didn't say great necessities call forth great LEADERS.    She said: “Great necessities call forth great VIRTUES.”    Which, for the record, MAKES THEM GREAT LEADERS.    Note: Both John AND his dad would become future U.S. Presidents. Virtue for the win!   Now…   Of course, that struck me (goosebumps) because our ENTIRE app is architected to help us operationalize the fact that ancient wisdom and modern science agree that the ultimate purpose of life is to express the best version of yourself (in service to something bigger than yourself!) by living with virtue.    And, of course, we believe the historically significant challenges we are facing DEMAND that each of us step up and show up as the best, most Heroic versions of ourselves.    Which is why I was even more struck by the rest of her letter.    When I read THIS passage, I could literally SEE Abigail and her husband John (who, in 1780, was the Ambassador to France in what was the fifth of an eight-year Revolutionary War!) and their kids using Heroic to commit to and then hit virtuous targets together all day every day (especially when they were so far away from each other!):   “I cannot fulfill the whole of my duty towards you, if I close this Letter, without reminding you of a failing which calls for a strict attention and watchfull care to correct. You must do it for yourself. You must curb that impetuosity of temper, for which I have frequently chid you, but which properly directed may be productive of great good. I know you are capable of these exertions, with pleasure I observed my advice was not lost upon you. If you indulge yourself in the practise of any foible or vice in youth, it will gain strength with your years and become your conquerer.   The strict and inviolable regard you have ever paid to truth, gives me pleasing hopes that you will not swerve from her dictates, but add justice, fortitude, and every Manly Virtue which can adorn a good citizen, do Honour to your Country, and render your parents supremely happy, particularly your ever affectionate Mother,”   Then I smiled when I realized that another beloved Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, would have probably created something similar to our app to track HIS virtues (with his friends and family!) if he was alive today.    Know this…   These are times in which Heroes would wish to live.    As we set out to make 2023 truly Heroic, may we remember that it is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station that great characters are formed.    Remember: “Great necessities call out great virtues. When a mind is raised, and animated by scenes that engulf the Heart, then those qualities which would otherwise lay dormant, wake to Life, and form the Character of the Hero and the Statesman.”   With Love + Wisdom + Self-Mastery + Courage and profound Gratitude for all of your support in helping us create a noble and virtuous world, I say…   Heroes unite!!!   Day 1. All in.   LET'S GO.

Totenberg appeared at an American Bar Foundation event to celebrate the launch of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Endowed Fund for Research in Civil Rights & Gender Equality. The history of National Public Radio, the outlet that made Nina Totenberg a household name, is shorter than many people imagine. Its first broadcast hit the airwaves in 1971. Napoli shares how NPR helped craft the careers of women like Susan Stamberg, Linda Linda Wertheimer, Cokie Roberts and Totenberg, but also how these women helped shape the network and national conversations. Totenberg changed the way the Supreme Court was reported on, says Napoli, and she discusses defining moments of Totenberg's career. The second half of the episode is made of highlights from Totenberg's conversation with E. Thomas Sullivan, the president of the ABF, in front of a Washington, D.C., audience that included former Ginsburg clerks. Totenberg spoke about her book, her friendship with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and what the justice really thought about the Notorious RBG meme. She reflects on Justice Ginsburg's relationship with Sandra Day O'Connor; the current “grey” makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court; and why Ginsburg chose not to retire in 2013.
