This week we are covering the horrifying real life events that inspired the horror movie ‘Scream'. The university town of Gainesville Florida was shaken in 1990 when 5 students, Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Tracy Paules, and Manny Taboada, were brutally murdered over the course of 4 days in August, right before the fall semester was about to begin. Investigators eventually linked Danny Rolling to the slayings and he was dubbed ‘The Gainesville Ripper' by the media. Dr Elizabeth Pearlman is a forensic veterinarian for the ASPCA's Veterinary Forensic Science Center in Gainesville FL. A childhood of watching Animal Cops on Animal Planet sent her on her path to veterinary science and eventually a Masters degree in Veterinary Forensic Science. She has practiced as a private practice emergency veterinarian and as a staff veterinarian for the Houston SPCA, and In 2018, she joined The ASPCA full-time as a forensic veterinarian. In her position, she assists law enforcement agencies nationwide with the identification, documentation, and collection of forensic evidence from crime scenes, live animals, and deceased animals. Additionally, she authors reports based on her findings and testifies in court as an expert witness. In this episode Liz gives us a peek into the career of a forensic vet. She shares practical advice and resources on how to deal with cruelty and neglect cases, including evidence gathering, documentation, reporting, working with law enforcement and even how to get over your fear of being an expert witness in court. This week's guest is Kathy Maresca (Porch Music, Touch Point Press, October 2022) In her debut novel, set in 1950's Gainesville Florida, Kathy utilized stories from her Seminole family history to tap into a story of racial inequities, Southern culture, country music, and religious hypocrisy. Her research included not only books and museums, but also her own memories of working at Six Gun Territory, a local theme park, and absorbing the rhythm of Native American dances. When it came to marketing, her most effective tool turned out to be contests, where she used her awards to publicize her book. Her least effective? A blog tour which failed to correctly target her ideal reader.    A native Floridian, Kathy Maresca grew up with a grandmother of Seminole heritage. Kathy served in the Air Force, working at the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel and then in special operations at Hurlburt Field, Florida. She edited for the University of Florida and taught English, journalism, and drama. While she was teaching, Kathy became ill with trigeminal neuralgia. She then earned a master's degree, became credentialed as a rehabilitation counselor, and served as the Director of Patient Services for the Trigeminal Neurgalgia Association. Kathy recently finished her second novel, Sky Kiss, and is working on a prequel to Porch Music. She has been a Guardian ad Litem and has taught classes for a prison fellowship ministry. I can hardly think of a building in Florida more apt to house a brewery than a 100+ year old ice plant with its own aquifer well on a tree-lined street in a college town. The search is on in Ocklawaha, Florida for a killer. Three teen victims, reportedly friends, were found shot. The first victim, Layla Silvernail, was found in a dumpster. She was still alive but later died at the hospital. Hours after finding Silvernail, a 17-year-old boy was found dead, miles away. He had also been shot.  The last victim, a 16-year-old girl, was found in Silvernail's vehicle, partially submerged in a pond.
