Get ready for a rollercoaster of HR drama and economic shade on  this week's show as we unpack a can o' worms, starting with the wild corporate espionage feud between Rippling and Deel, with Rippling alleging Deel's spying triggered a federal probe and Globalization Partners reporting similar shenanigans—Chad says Deel's C-suite might need a total reboot. Klarna's AI avatar-led earnings report screams IPO hype, but its predatory micro-loan model gets roasted, with J.T. warning job seekers to master video authentication as AI interviews become universal. Speaking of AI, job seekers are slamming glitchy, soulless AI interviews, with J.T. urging strategic job hunting in a market tougher than 2008, while Chad pitches quirky Max Headroom-style AI to ease the weirdness. Utah's AwardCo snags $165M and a $1B valuation for its employee recognition platform, but the hosts call it a shiny fix for lousy leadership, doomed to breed dissatisfaction. Trump's tariff tantrum at Walmart, demanding they “eat” costs, is labeled chaotic misdirection by Chad, with J.T. seeing it as Trump's chaos-and-save tactic. The Senate's No Tax on Tips Act, offering a $25,000 deduction, is slammed as a distraction from living wages—only 2.5% of workers rely on tips, and Joel mourns the sidestep of real wage reform. With GP operating in over 180 countries, Nat shares his perspective on how AI is reshaping the workforce and the future of global business. Through GP's AI tool ‘Gia,' the company is revolutionizing HR and compliance tasks, enhancing productivity while complementing human expertise. Nat emphasizes that AI will augment, not replace, human work, using the mantra “Humans are wise, AI is intelligent” to explain the partnership between technology and human insight. He discusses how GP leverages AI to manage the complexities of international employment and compliance laws, significantly improving efficiency across their operations. In just six months, GP's 'Gia' has answered over 30,000 questions with 95% accuracy, becoming a vital resource for the sales team in addressing intricate compliance questions instantly. We also dive into broader AI adoption trends, particularly how younger generations, like Nat's son, are naturally integrating AI into their work processes. AI is no longer confined to technical roles; it's being adopted across sales, operations, and marketing. Nat shares his view on how businesses must embrace AI to stay relevant, warning that future companies will either be "out of business or AI-enabled." The conversation also highlights the importance of continuous learning and adapting to an AI-driven world. Nat explains how businesses need to evaluate which tasks can be enhanced by AI, while emphasizing the need for critical thinking and data preparation. He shares his personal approach to learning from young professionals, believing in the power of cross-generational knowledge and continuous self-improvement. Tune in to learn how AI is shaping global employment, the essential role of continuous learning, and why being "better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today" is key to thriving in the future workforce.

We're so excited to bring you another conversation from this year's alumni reunion! Tracy Dennis `00 and John Dennis `93 met the first week of freshman year as undergrads at Harvard and have been together ever since, even both eventually coming to Rice Business for their MBAs! Tracy is a lecturer of management at Rice Business, teaching Principles of Survey Design. She started two research and insight agencies and is currently a lead UX researcher for Globalization Partners. John has been a principal, managing director, and managing partner of WoodRock & Co. since he founded the firm in 1998. Tracy and John join host Maya Pomroy '22 to talk about their lives together, what brought them to Houston and to Rice, post-Partio Lamaze classes, and why they continue to give back to the Rice community.Owl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:How an MBA transforms lives and inspires people to give back8:54: [Tracy Dennis] I see the benefits of my MBA in everything that I do every single day. I see it at work, I see it at home, I see it with our daughters, who are in their early careers. You know, I feel like I have benefited immensely from my MBA, and I'm grateful. I really want to give back because of it, and I want to just continue to be a part of it just because it played such a big role in my life, and it's an exciting place to be right now. There's lots of great things going on.On giving back to the Rice community14:00: [Tracy Dennis] I don't think of what I do with Rice Business as volunteering. I do it because I feel strongly about Rice Business, and I personally get so much out of it, and I want to give back to the school because it's given me so much.On what made John choose Houston04:47: [John Dennis] While I enjoyed growing up here, I never thought I would come back. But I think seeing Houston through Tracy's eyes gave me the opportunity to kind of look at it with an open mind, and it's been very, very good to us.Learning more through business school02:13: [Tracy Dennis] I had a short career as a bond trader but had always wanted to go to business school to connect a bunch of dots. You know, there were a lot of things that I was exposed to that I wanted to learn more about but just never had the time to do. And so, for me, business school was the opportunity to do that.Show Links:  Globalization Partners WoodRock & Co. Transcript Guest Profile: Tracy Dennis | LinkedIn  John Dennis | LinkedIn

Gray-haired late-night fans may remember when David Letterman sought to ingratiate himself with his network's new owner, General Electric Corp., by hand-delivering a bowl of fruit to GE's executive brass. Nearly 20 years later, Simone Nardi became a benefactor of GE's media aspirations when he traded a senior manager position on GE's audit team for a unit CFO role inside GE's plus-size media holdings enterprise, NBCUniversal.   “While a member of GE's audit team, I had had the opportunity to work with the head of GE's audit staff, so when she was named CFO of NBCUniversal, she called me when she had an opening there," recalls Nardi, while referring to GE colleague Lynn Calpeter, who stepped into the CFO role at NBCUniversal in 2003 and then later returned to GE in 2011 upon the sale of the company to Comcast. That very same year, Nardi was able to take advantage of a new CFO opportunity that surfaced inside NBCUniversal Networks International's TV Production business, which allowed the unit CFO to open his first post-GE career chapter without having to change jobs.    In the years that followed, Nardi tells us, he stepped into CFO roles at a number of different companies, one of which (fuboTV) he helped to take public.   Still, few chapters have been as formative for the finance leader as his years at GE, which seemed to achieve a familiar rhythm over time. Says Nardi: “The approach involved different businesses, different projects, and different teams globally. We'd connect locally, map out the project, deliver it, and go on to the next one.” –Jack Sweeney

Bob Cahill got his start at Ernst & Young. “And I was fascinated by the power of software and technology to expand your market or make you efficient in your operations,” he said as our guest on this episode of #HRTechChat video podcast. Over the approximately 25 years that have passed, Bob served as a C-suite executive for several technology companies, and a big part of his focus has always been on international challenges, “where I found a lot of passion to scale technology globally,” he said. “It was sort of the perfect juncture with meeting Nicole Sahin,” the founder of Globalization Partners, where Bob later became CEO. “She had this better mousetrap idea.” Traditionally, companies that wanted to expand internationally would have to follow a very conventional process. The first step would be to set up a new entity and get a payroll registration so they could hire people. Then, they'd have to ensure regulatory compliance would be outsourced to an array of advisors. “Nicole's vision was, ‘Why do I keep doing this over and over again?',” Bob noted. Thus was born, about 10 years ago, Nicole's vision for an employer-of-record (EOR). A company that needs to stand up its ability to employ people in a country new to its operations can turn to an EOR to do all the heavy lifting. The EOR's very business is to set up these entities in any country needed to become the globally expanding employer's single point for all things there related to employment. The EOR assumes this risk and takes on solving for all the complexity involved. As a pioneer in the space, Globalization-Partners has trailblazed best-practices to overcome resistance to the idea of an EOR. This resistance is waning considerably as EORs have flourished to gain acceptance in recent years. The welcoming has come not only from the typical growing global organization, but also from employers clamoring to establish borderless workforces and vie for talent in pursuit of the emerging work-from-anywhere approach to talent acquisition and retention. This is the future-of-work angle, and it's worth noting that nearly one-quarter of CFOs are concerned over talent shortages, according to Globalization Partners' 2022 Globalization Trends Survey. Perhaps more compelling, 83 percent of CFOs believe “their long-term plans will stem around expansion into new countries,” the related press release notes. It's a number slightly higher than last year's, and the report is rich with insight into the sentiments and objectives of CFOs vis-à-vis EOR. As additional context for our conversation, Bob and I touched a bit on the findings overall. We also explored the company's philosophy when it comes to workforce inclusivity and blending service and technology for EOR, as well as Nicole's vision for the years ahead in EOR now that she is executive chair of Globalization Partners. I highly recommend viewing this episode.
