Judgment of self: It can be an automatic judgment of self* in comparison mode.* it's about the thoughts that we create about ourselves.* this can actually be a defense mechanism. * if I judge myself, then others won't judge me or reject me. * I judge myself so that I can motivate myself. * judging our emotions.* attachment to judgment.* self sabotage kicks in when we go back and reference those judgments. * shift to self compassion. So I actually have you go through a process where you really feel it in your body like where does Is the show up, and then challenging the truth of it, and then trying to come up with a new thought. Judgment of others: We're in such a habit of judging others. * Assumed something was going to happen and it didn't.* dangerous to relationships.* gossiping.* set realistic expectations.* projection of self onto others.* question why you are judging others.* compassion for others.* become a bridge - connection and engagement.I think a lot of times, we have been so programmed and conditioned to judge others, everybody does it, right. So it's like all over social media, it's all over the media, there's all kinds of judgment of others going on. And it's almost become very normalized. Let's shift to a little bit more of the heart, and we show a little bit more compassion to self and others. Listen here https://angiemccourt.transistor.fm/episodesMy top offers:Want to go deep? Limiting beliefs are conditioned throughout our life through genetics, generational and ancestral beliefs passed down, karmic beliefs buried deep in our DNA from past lives, society, education, media, advertising, social media, family, and any influential person in our life (good or bad). Limiting beliefs hold power through fear and negativity.Have you ever challenged your own beliefs? In the sense of seeking if they are “true”? A belief is a thought we continue to believe. And we can change it. Beliefs aren't true, they're just real. All beliefs carry consequences with them and can create or destroy some of the most important areas of our life like relationships, career, and health. There are two types of beliefs: global beliefs and rules. Global beliefs begin as “Life is …,” or “I am …,” or “People are …” Rules are if/then statements that we create and tend to live by. The current brain is three thousand years old with a ton of old programming. There once was a belief that the world is flat, so almost everyone accepted it. This held back societies from building sturdy ships and seeking new resources. Once Christopher Columbus debunked the belief, there was a new fact-based belief formed. The world is actually round. This is a simple example of how beliefs can be challenged and changed to truth or simply something else. We have become a culture of theory and opinions, so most everything including watching a sporting game is narrated by personal observation and based on that narrator's beliefs. When we bring our limiting beliefs about our self-worth, ability, intelligence, execution, and effectiveness to the workplace, they completely hold us back and keep us from fully enjoying the learning and growth process in our career. I've spoken with so many people who struggle with “imposter or poser syndrome,” held back by money beliefs and confidence. Some examples of potential limiting beliefs on relationships include: · I will never find true love.· This won't last.· They should treat me how I treat them. Some examples of potential limiting beliefs on money include: · Rich people are mean.· There is not enough money.· I must get what I want, how I want, when I want. Some examples of potential limiting beliefs on health include: · I just can't lose weight.· I don't have time. Some examples of potential limiting beliefs on self-worth include: · I am not good enough.· I don't deserve (fill in the blank).· I must/should always do well and win the approval of others. Some examples of potential limiting beliefs on ability include: · I am not an expert.· I'm an imposter. Let's challenge and CHANGE these limiting beliefs! Identify those beliefs that are limiting us or holding us back or in place. Challenge their truth. Is this the truth? When has this happened in the past? Do the facts support this? Change your story with truth statements - how can you re-write your story to include truths that are relevant to you? Or Create a belief you wish you had and move it to a fact. Set up the truth of this belief and simply embed it in your brain. You can state the belief multiple times to make this happen. Journal on a problem. Say to yourself, “What wouldn't happen if I didn't have this problem?” (Some examples include worry, self-shame, burnout, overwhelm, holding back, etc.) Having limiting beliefs that are definitive and using words like always and never will keep you from driving toward your goals and meeting fantastic people in your life. Abstract, limiting beliefs and using words like “should” and “could” keeps things out of grasp around you without ever solidifying results. Let's become more conscious about the stories we tell ourselves. When we do, we can change those stories to truth. When we become aware of what is our truth and what is not, it provides us an easier way to challenge beliefs that pop up. It shifts the approach to seeking the truth of them versus just believing them. When we change our mindset, we become intentional about what we create in the non-physical and physical worlds.Listen here https://angiemccourt.transistor.fm/episodesMy top offers:Want to go deep? True imposter feelings involve self-doubt, uncertainty about your talents and abilities, and a sense of unworthiness that doesn't align with what others think about you despite your education, experience, and accomplishments. In addition to a crippling self-belief that you don't deserve your success or that you couldn't replicate it, you are also unable to internalize positive achievements. What is Flow? The optimal state of consciousness where human beings perform and feel at their very best. It's a form of energy. I invite you to recall a time when you were so immersed in something you completely lost track of time. Have you noticed when you have been in a state where life's distractions did not bother you or you skipped a meal and didn't even feel hungry or notice it? Have you been so connected with someone where you were in deep listening and collaboration with hours going by without noticing? Have you observed your child sit for hours paying video games? Why is this? There is an opportunity to discipline our unconscious mind by focusing on and even generate thoughts of our own choosing and attach meaning to them at the unconscious level to influence our behavior. We can create internal representations of events that empower and engage us to create our own reality. Thoughts and Internal representations trigger our emotions and perceptions. This can cause us to allow our thinking to just sort of happen to us. However, we do have the power to control our thinking, lives, behavior, and results. We open up a new dimension of our thinking and a higher version of ourselves. How can we enter the flow state? It's been scientifically proven to enter the flow state at will whenever you want. Having the attitude is the first step. It's all about the journey! Essential Elements of the Flow state:Train yourself to experience the flow state at will, operate at flow including mundane tasks or those you may not have enjoyed in the past. · Setting a goal that does not risk becoming overwhelming or boring. · Breaking goals down to create smaller achievable goals that can be internalized.· Focus attention on that goal. One at a time.· Take concentrated action to achieving that goal. (block out distractions) · Time will disappear in the flow state· Get better and better at the things in your life and when you achieve, challenge yourself with the next level.· Be fully involved in the process.Chaos and Flow:Can you recall a time when you didn't have anywhere to be, clean to-do list, nobody tapping you for something? Once the initial feeling of this freedom passes, entropy brings in chaos. It brings in thoughts from the past (ruminate over) or into the future (worry). Our default setting is peace/calm/happiness, but the system and programming we have been exposed to creates the habitual mind. Chaos and disorder tend to be the operation. Basically, as soon as we feel like we are ‘happy' we tend to challenge it and quickly shift into chaos. Chaos can exist in perceived order and order can exist in chaos. Typically, we are externally focused to find solutions to get to happiness. Instead, creating rewards within themselves and learning to enjoy the process of whatever it is they are doing can help them create order and get them into a state of flow. Science of Flow:Have you ever heard about the state of a runner's high, getting in the zone (athletes), musicians getting their groove. It's more common than you might think! You can go in and out of multiple instances of the flow state. Flow is actually in our brains. Marked by a cascade of positive chemicals the brain releases in a way in which we perceive the task internally. For instance. Mopping the floor sounds boring and mundane, but adding some fun to it can change the internal representation of mopping the floor. How about the process by changing up how you do it so the floor dries faster or inventing a machine in your mind that does the job while pretending to be that machine. Make it fun and challenging in a good way! As chemicals disburse around the body it changes our physiology. There is still work to be done. One of the inspirations for this episode is helping others to find their flow. It's not easy with so many distractions and overwhelm throughout the day. Our energy can be sporadic and if we depend on caffeine for our energy that can take us up as fast as it can down. It's been important to me to find something that not only helps me find creativity WHEN I need to, but to help me get into flow. Focus and clarity are key here. I started drinking these green shots from Magicmind and I love them! They help me so much every morning and I can get into flow. I usually drink them alongside my morning coffee. Ancient teachings tell us that stress is the body's inability to predict what's coming next, taking the mind out of ‘homeostasis' (the self-preservation state). A disciplined mind, combined with the tools that help it be disciplined (nootropics, adaptogens) leads to getting more stuff done in less time and eventually to a disciplined and stress-free life. Seeing how well it worked for me, l really encourage you to try it out as well if you're having trouble tapping into your creativity, focus and finding clarity in your day. It's a total game changer. I have a 20% off code to share with you guys, it's SHIFTING20. To use it, you can go to magicmind.co/shifting and enter the code SHIFTING20 at checkout. The best part is that they have a money back guarantee. If you get a subscription, you can get 40% off using SHIFTING20 (for the next 10 days). Stages of Flow: How to create a state of flow consistently and at will.Struggle – you are learning about the thing you want to get good at. Conscious brain is fully engaged at this stage. Conscious incompetent stage. The planning portion, animal impulses, identity. For instance, Writing a book it's the interviews stage. Learning to play guitar, observing what it is you need to learn. This is trying to figure out what it is we need to learn to accomplish our goal or solve the problem. Relaxation – Consciously stop whatever you are doing completely to give your brain a rest. Slow down breathing. Take a nap, light swimming or yoga. Walk, gardening help to clear the mind and allow it to reboot. This is not TV or another activity that keeps your brain in activity. Start to use our intuition and use new ideas to do things. Flow state - The Body is flooded with feel good chemicals. It releases dopamine helps us to enhance our focus, take in more info per second than we normally can). Our unconscious releases Anandamide speeds up lateral thinking which helps us to link up ideas and triggers new ideas and inspiration. Endorphins and serotonin which calms us to feel good about the process. Conscious and unconscious minds are working together in harmony. Problems are easily solved even if you were struggling with them before. Getting form point A to B becomes simple and automatic without concentration. Prefrontal cortex shuts down. Time often either expands/contracts for us during this phase. Self-critic area of the brain shuts down and Creativity and risk taking goes up. Full engagement with unconscious mind. Enhanced performance while using little energy. Alpha or even Theta waves are accessed in the brain.Recovery – Conscious and unconscious minds consolidate what has been learned. Dealing with chemical changes in the body feeling drained or down. While this is a normal part of the process you can stay on par allowing for you to access Accelerated learning. How to get into Flow state?· Create Games/mini-tasks - Take tasks you don't necessarily like to do and ask yourself how you can make it more efficient, more fun, do it faster, do away without ever having to do the task again, invent a machine to do the task for me. I love music helping me to get into flow. Paramore has been my flow music lately. I choose something that pairs nicely with the task and getting into flow.· How to disengage and clear your mind. The first thing you do is instruct your conscious mind to consider everything you are about to say. And then either out loud or in your mind while focus on pupils in mirror and say: Everything and nothing, everywhere and nowhere. Pause. Say it again. Pause.· Do things you love just because you love it and want to do it, for no other reason.· Practice gratitude every day – for the times you experience flow and all the other good things you enjoy.Triggers for flow (pick something that works for you) based on a combination of interviews with athletes in the zone and brain imaging techniques to scientifically confirm the subjective descriptions of that particular state. Steven Kotler has studied and come up with 17 triggers. The more intense the triggers the more momentum to get into/stay in Flow.4 physiological triggers: (individual)· Deep concentration for long periods of time (no multi-tasking) – solitude typical, be in present moment· Have clear goals – SMART Goals to engage with unconscious mind· Immediate feedback lets you know if you're on the right track of your goal (allows you to be in the present moment – keeping in flow)· Set a challenge that is slightly more difficult than your current skill level (not too high or anxiety can slip you out of flow, too low creates boredom and slip out of flow) – find a balance between challenge and skill.3 Environmental triggers (individual)· High consequences – when stakes are high, we don't need to force ourselves to concentrate. We do this naturally.· Introduce a rich environment - unpredictability, complexity, and anything can happen. Lots of information comes in.· Deep embodiment – Must be intensely focused with a full immersion strategy – comes in bursts. downhill skier.9 social triggers – can put a group into flow state. · Good communication – disciplined about what is/isn't allowed· Naysaying not allowed· Similar skills/roles · Equal responsibility · Aligned intentions· Inclusion of everyone on team – each person equally important· Element of Risk – Always going to be potential for failure. Flow doesn't happen with some sense of risk.· Active listening – fully engaged in convo (each group member) - focused in the moment.· Avoid negativity and arguments (blocks momentum, breaks flow state. Goal is to build momentum by amplifying each other's ideas.1 creative trigger· Creativity – individual and group. Creativity triggers flow and flow enhances creativity. Linking ideas together to form new ideas. Flow in everyday life:Can initiate in many different contexts and many different situations. Stretch yourself when you have opportunities to get into the state of flow and maintaining it. Give yourself a mini challenge. Results of Flow:Here are just some results of flow: Improved health, creations (art, music, etc.), forget about physical pain temporarily, increased creativity, improved self-esteem, linked to higher levels of happiness. Being able to tap into the fullest expression of self. Happiness is a decision. More to do with mindset than external circumstances. Expectations of self and others clearly have a profound impact on how we measure success, disappointment and effectiveness of others or ourselves. It comes down to one major thing. Clearly communicating expectations. Then receiving expectations. When we assume others know what we need or think or expect we totally set things up for disappointment. I love the book Expectation Hangover and wanted to do an episode in alignment with my book chapter 5 on expectations to dive deeper. There are a lot of assumptions that tend to be sent and received by us. The clear expectation being specific, timely, respectful and compassionate (to impact of others) set in a way that is responsible will have significant impact. The expectation received and assumed without getting clarity causes extra stress, juggling and more than likely more hours worked. https://angiemccourt.transistor.fm/episodesListen on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Play, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Listen Notes, Audible, SoundCloud, iHeart Radio. Fulfillment = slow down to speed upI used to claim my ability to multi-task as a superpower. In reality, this method of working drained me, left me feeling unfulfilled and a bit disconnected. I would rush through tasks and projects in the same way instead of really putting a lot of thought and attention to what mattered most. I would leave work with open items that didn't get closed out which made me feel unfulfilled. What I didn't realize for a long time is this approach is draining and impacts not being able to fully engage all of my gifts. When I would take the time to fully immerse in a new idea, strategy, or solution to a problem, I was able to utilize the gifts that would bring those to reality. This is because several studies have shown that high multitaskers experience greater problems focusing on important and complicated tasks, memory impairment of new subject matter, difficulty learning new material, and increased stress levels. The real superpower was capacity which is very different then being able to switch gears left and right across multiple things at the same time. Mental, emotional and creative capacity plus a the best class I ever took (typing in high school) offered much more of a superpower. But how to use this fully vs. just multi-tasking chaos.I did formulate over the years a great skill around prioritization which relieved some of the pressure of getting everything done right away. I started asking for and giving clarity on what was actually urgent vs. not, and when something needed to be done in reality. In our world of feeling the pressure to respond right away, complete everything on our plate by end of day and depending on others to get anything done (meaning we are not in full control) it can be overwhelming, chaotic and unnecessary.A few years ago I started to time block on my calendar during my most creative and productive times in the day. That was my sacred space and I started to put more focus and creativity in things I was navigating or projects I was bringing to life. I also found that context shifting was killing me mentally. I had a variety of areas of responsibility, teams, skills and outputs that had me shifting all day long from meeting to meeting and email to email. Short conversations, shorter email responses and pushing myself to meet deadlines regardless of how many hours I worked was absolutely not fulfilling.I started grouping things together based on area in both my calendar/meetings and topics to focus on. This kept me in that mental focus for more than just an hour at a time. I tried to schedule 1:1's with my team in chunks so I could be in listening mode more effectively. There were many adjustments that definitely helped! However, I didn't realize how much more productive and effective I could be if I had discipline around focus, intention and attention.I slowed down, got rid of the everything is urgent mentality, clarified expectations (an gave myself a break) and set boundaries to provide space to actually be more productive. This also allowed me to strengthen my other gifts like bringing in new ideas, planning more holistically into the future, and more strategically outline effective plans. Back to multi-tasking chaos. Shifting the mind all day long from one task to the next actually goes against its natural desire to keep things simple and preserve the body. And studies show that switching from one task to the next takes a serious toll on productivity by as much as 40 percent. Multitaskers have more trouble tuning out distractions than people who focus on one task at a time. Doing so many things at once can actually impair cognitive ability. While our subconscious mind is processing at least 134 bits per second of information, our conscious mind can only take in about 7 +/- 2 pieces of information. The brain is not meant to multitask.Switching from one task to another makes it difficult to tune out distractions and can cause mental blocks that can slow you down. I found this was even more so when my responsibilities spread across many different parts of the business. Switching context all day, whether it was calls, meetings, creating, or conversations with team members for each of those areas was exhausting. There are some tasks that we are robotic about and can do with our eyes closed and without thought, but with so much information coming in visually and audibly, it can be overwhelming. This is because in the brain, multitasking is managed by executive functions. These control and manage cognitive processes and determine how, when, and in what order certain tasks are performed. According to Meyer, Evans, and Rubinstein,[1] there are two stages to the executive control process, (1) goal shifting: deciding to do one thing instead of another, and (2) role activation: changing from the rules for the previous task to rules for the new task. Part of the issue of multitasking is the start of the day when we pick up our phones after opening our eyes for the first time. Our minds start going and we start feeling the pressure to get everything done that we need to do. New to-dos start overriding the plan we created the night before, and we lose control before the day even starts. Another area is meetings or video calls. This is not a new issue due to remote working, but it already existed in physical group meetings too. Laptop open, email open, and guess what's going on? Half-listening while looking at email, creating documents, booking travel, or other tasks needing the brain. After leaving a meeting where critical information was shared, I've repeatedly seen someone start asking, “So what's going on with this program (or issue)?” If they would have just listened in the meeting and avoided the other distractions, they would be fully informed. Instead, it was obvious they were not listening. This can create major disconnects, especially in a very fast-paced environment. When we look at the impact multitasking has on decisions, it's also clear that the brain gets fatigued and it becomes challenging to make the best decisions. If we are distracted, we take in half of the information. If we are tired, we can't process it well. If we are overwhelmed, we shortchange the potential impact of our abilities and our gifts. When I started writing my book I set myself a goal of writing 2k words a day, 4 days a week. When I started writing I put my phone in a different place, did not have email open and had only my writing in front of me. I realize now that the exercise of being committed and dedicating 100% focus and attention on writing created discipline in me. This was a huge aha moment. I started my book May 6, 2021 and finished July 26, 2021 (76K words, 35 chapters) minus a couple of weeks I did not write. Being able to fully immerse ourselves into a project, creation, solution, problem we are solving, etc. allows us to deliver something more effective, in a more timely manner AND best of all, we feel fulfillment at the end of the day. I've adapted this practice in my business by grouping things together that take a skill or thought process to complete, prioritize over and over to ensure I'm working on THE most important items and give myself permission to put things aside that are not necessary so I can give my full attention to the things that are relevant. Slowing down to speed up is a skill, discipline and benefit! Take a look at your day, personal processes, have a conversation with your boss on ‘what is necessary', set boundaries around your response time, time block your best creative and productive times of day and allow yourself to get focused (giving full attention) to the big things. Here are a few tips from my book on this topic in the Multi-tasking Insanity section Make the Shift. To become more productive through less multitasking insanity:· Use the “twenty-minute rule” and stick to each task for at least twenty minutes before shifting.· Limit the number of things you juggle at any given time to two.· Invest time into prioritizing and re-prioritizing so you don't feel the pressure to do it all at once.· Take a quick assessment of the various things you are trying to accomplish if you catch yourself multitasking and need to be productive.· Eliminate distractions and try to focus on one task at a time. This includes allocating time slots in the day for email review rather than constantly looking at it. Turn off your notifications.· Create more structure in your work by performing highly creative tasks in the morning, and then take a short break before moving on to each different task.

Now that I've dissociated myself from the ‘crazy' I realize how much of my drive came from thinking I needed to prove myself. That can be fine, but it's important to balance the need to prove ourselves with achieving goals. Going back I realize that when things were ‘crazy busy' it was because my expectations were to overachieve not just achieve goals. To build and create the Best versus just get something launched, stood up or kicked-off. Then when I was disappointed by how little all of that work and results really meant it led me to burnout. There is a point when the physical and emotional exhaustion lead to deeper psychological burnout. That's when it can get dangerous. I went through cycles and always was able to find my way out (vacation, completion of a project or special assignment, etc.). The thing is that I don't even think my first case of burnout was until maybe mid-thirties. What is the impact on early in career folks and even those of us who have had the chance to build up resilience over decades?
