Episode 132: Architecture, And: Ownership, Mergers, and Tech StartupsHow do you utilize technology to make good design efficient and accessible for everyone? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we sit down with Alma Lopez, Head of Creative at CANOA, and Elizabeth (Liz) Wert, Head of Brand at CANOA, an AI-assisted collaborative online tool for designers, to learn about their journey from business owners to company mergers, how a tech startup forces efficiency, and the ways CANOA serves as an inspiration point for both its users and an evolving industry.First, we hear how Alma and Liz decided to start their business, ADITIONS, together in 2021 from a human-centric approach to leverage community as a way to locally source design pieces. They illustrate how the merger with CANOA gave them an opportunity to use technology to make good design accessible to everyone. “Do we stay and go the traditional route and scale our studio, and keep working with the 1% that can actually afford our services? Or do we go and build software with an amazing team that actually helps the interior design industry do better through technology? It was kind of like a no-brainer. We got to help everyone.” - Liz WertThen, we dive into CANOA: its impact in the design and tech startup world, how it challenges the industry to be more efficient, and why it serves as a reminder that design is never done alone. We ask Alma and Liz to share their specific roles and the ways that their background and skill sets overlap to support each other and the business. Plus, we learn about CANOA's current user base and the possibility of international reach. To wrap up the episode, Alma and Liz share why their love for problem-solving is essential for building and growing a startup, and how diversity in the profession will support the future of CANOA (and the architecture and design industry) as a place for discovery, education, building community, and promoting sustainability. Tune in next week for a conversation with AIA National Award winner and recipient of the 2023 Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, Robert L Easter, FAIA NOMAC.Guests:Alma Lopez is Head of Creative at CANOA. Originally hailing from Texas, Alma landed in the Bay Area studying Interior Architecture and Design at Academy of Art University. Alma co-founded experience design studio, ADITIONS, in 2021, which merged with CANOA in 2022. There, she is focused on bringing to market a diverse curation of brands, products, and ready-to-use design templates that bias sustainable solutions and share carbon data. By doing so, she aims to create better access to healthier solutions for people and our planet. Alma's work has been recognized in Architectural Digest, Wallpaper, The New York Times, Interior Design Magazine, Inc. World's Coolest Offices, Fast Company, and won the Good Design Award in furniture.Elizabeth (Liz) Wert is Head of Brand at CANOA. She has worked with major furniture manufacturers and global furniture dealerships, and co-founded her own design and strategy studio, ADITIONS, with Alma in 2021. At CANOA, Liz focuses on brand design and development and go-to-market strategies to grow CANOA's interior design user base. Susan Mravca is an entrepreneur with a mission: To help people spend more time with their dogs, without their dogs bothering them. Bully sticks, she found, are great at keeping a dog occupied, but she didn't like having to hold her dog's chews in place in order to keep her from burying it or swallowing it. She decided to try to design something that could work—something unlike any other product she could find for this purpose—but she had one major criterion that was rather unusual: It had to be an object of great beauty. The result, which she designed with help from her brother —an engineer with a background in the Department of Defense — is the recently-launched Treat Clincher, which just won the prestigious Good Design Award. The price tag, however, will leave some pet owners aghast. Annie interviews Susan about the origins of this product (and offers a $30 coupon to the first five people to purchase a Treat Clincher at SchoolForTheDogs.com/clincher). https://storeforthedogs.com/products/treat-clincher-bully-stick-holder http://www.good-designawards.com/award-details.html?award=41703 Previous episodes about things relating to bully sticks: https://www.schoolforthedogs.com/podcasts/a-better-mousetrap-building-the-perfect-bully-stick-holder/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-make-sure-your-dog-never-swallows-bully-stick https://anchor.fm/dogs/episodes/What-is-a-bully-stick--A-very-detailed-answer-to-an-awkward-question-ekd2ph/a-a3ih6c2 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dogs/message

Robyn McLean is the co-founder of Hello Cup, a company that creates high-quality menstrual cups that last for at least 5 years, saving the user the equivalent of over 2000 single-use tampons. But Hello Cup is not only saving waste – it's changing the way people talk about periods. Their taglines include ‘bloody brilliant', ‘no strings attached' and they even have a feature on their website where you can swap the word vagina out for a fun nickname of your choice, if vagina sounds a bit too serious. The brand's cups are designed by Robyn's co-founder Mary Bond, who's a registered nurse, and they recently won a Good Design Award for, in the judge's words, ‘turning a functional product into something fashionable and joyful'. In this episode, you'll learn how to turn a side passion into a full-time gig, just how long pesky pads and tampons take to break down in landfill and how to stand out from your competitors and make your customers giggle through clever branding. To learn more about Hello Cup, check out their website.Read the full transcript of this interview and show notes here.Watch Conscious Commerce interviews in full on noissue's YouTube channel.

He's one of the most inspirational entrepreneurial people I have ever met. He's worked with some of the greatest entrepreneurs in the world, including the awesome Sir Richard Branson. If you really want to know what it takes to be an entrepreneur, not just in your life but also in your business, check out this podcast. Harry Kosato is a parallel entrepreneur, social psychologist, and sushi curator. He started out as a qualified international tax expert. Now he wears many hats and runs projects as diverse as Sushi and More (India's first chain of sushi outlets) to Dr. Smart Money (a social impact project) in Oxford.

Craig Dubitsky started his entrepreneurial career as an investor and was fortunate to be involved in the beginnings of both companies Method and eos. Today, he still looks back at the networking opportunities that he had and the steps that have brought him to his successes with gratitude. He began Hello with a great idea and a group of really motivated people that wanted to provide honest products for everyone. Now, their charcoal toothpaste in available in everyday retail stores including Walmart and Fred Meyer. Craig credits these successes not only to a great product that is easy to sell, but also to the powerful team he has and the working environment they have created together. Hello ensures that all employees are not limited to one position, so that they have opportunities to contribute in all areas of the company. With rapidly growing technology and chemistry, we are better able to make green and natural products available to wider audiences. The processes are getting cheaper and scientists are discovering ways to harness benefits from sources were weren’t capable of before. Hello is utilizing these new capabilities and a society of people who are interested in having better products surrounding them in their lives. This market environment has made it easier for Hello products to pave its way into the consumer environment than it would have been years ago. People are finally demanding better stuff that is more affordable and accessible, and Hello has begun to make this dream into a reality. What you'll get out of tuning in: What is different about Hello How to make products more widely available What you can do better as an entrepreneur Links Mentioned in the Episode: Craig Dubitsky's website Body Thrive Book The Surprising Power of Liberating Structures Book Show Highlights: 1:40 At Hello, the goal is to make their products available for everyone. Craig not only wants these products to be natural but he also wants them to be truly effective for consumers. 6:35 - As an entrepreneur, having a good product with results that were easily proven and honest ingredients really aided in getting Hello products into common retailers. These retailers, just like any consumer, want better stuff to offer! 17:00 - When it comes to the fluoride debate, Hello chose not to a pick a side. They offer cavity-fighting fluoride and fluoride-free products so that they can support the consumer’s right to choose what they use. 32:05 - “Green” products used to mean to people that things that were natural, but that their efficacy was in question, and that the price point was prohibitive. With the growth in technological and chemical development, the ability to make natural products easier is leading to decreasing the price of natural “green” products. 34:10 - People these are day are actually interested in looking at the ingredients in their toothpaste products - and Hello tells you what each ingredient does. In the past, these were not conversations that we would have been capable of having. 36.33 - Green used to mean making compromises in your products. Now, entrepreneurs have helped bridge the gap by making “hybrid” options where people can have the best of both worlds. These options are becoming more accessible and more reliable for everyone. Your Favorite Quotes: “I wanted to make products for the 100%, not the 1%.” - Craig Dubitsky “The dentist is going to drill, fill and bill you.” - Craig Dubitsky “There’s better stuff to put in bodies, your body matters.” - Cate Stillman “It’s not just save yourself, save the world, its have more fun.” - Cate Stillman “Whole body health and oral health are inextricably linked.” - Craig Dubitsky “And if you love what you’re doing, you've already won.” - Craig Dubitsky Guest BIO: Jello’s friendly founder, Craig, is obsessed with design, checked shirts, transformational brands, and making stuff that elevates the every day. If you’ve read something from us that made you smile, there’s a pretty good chance Craig wrote it. That last sentence wasn’t very funny, so maybe he didn’t write it. Craig started hello because he was tired of oral care brands that preyed on fear and shame, that were filled with unfriendly ingredients, that tasted yucky, and because he thought crinkly toothpaste tubes were fugly af. The range recently received two of the most prestigious and highly recognized design awards in the world, the Good Design Award and the Red Dot Award, and achieved Leaping Bunny status, the highest certification of friendliness with respect to animal testing. In addition, hello was named to Inc. Magazine’s annual Most Audacious list as one of The 25 Companies That Are Changing the World. He was an early investor and board member in Method, the co-founder and creative lead at eos, Dubitsky was named one of Brand Packaging Magazine’s 2014 Brand Innovators, and to The Internationalist 100 as one of Most Inspirational Marketers in the World. In January of 2015, Advertising Age named him to The Creativity 50, their annual list of the most influential and innovative creative thinkers. Craig’s ongoing involvement with revolutionary consumer packaged goods spans category lines: strategizing with green home care brand Seventh Generation on innovation and design, serving as CMO of Popcorn, Indiana, one of the fastest growing salty snacks brands in the US, and advising OTC brand Help Remedies from his role on its Board of Directors. He’s an Entrepreneur in Residence at Babson, and a founding advisory board member at the University of Rochester’s Ain Center for Entrepreneurship at the Simon School of Business. Skype him now, he’s psyched to say hello, and to show you one of his plaid shirts or play guitar for you (have your earplugs ready). Connect with Craig Dubitsky on his Linkedin, Facebook and Hello Products Website.

Mr. Hara said most tablets are white and round and very generic looking, and can be mistaken easily. That was his Ah Ha! Moment and realized that there are many people who may have nearly made or actually made the mistake of taking the wrong dosage, or given the wrong dosage of drugs to those they are caring for. So the journey to creating what is now known as IDTAB technology began. Mr. Hara and his team first started enquiring tablet printing makers at the end of 2009. Being able to print the product name directly onto conventional OD tablets, which are soft and dissolve easily, is complicated and has up until now been impossible, but the team saw the need and pushed forward. 97.4% of pharmacists nationwide admit having given the wrong dosage to their patients Before the technology was perfected and made available to the market, one person was reported to have died from taking the wrong dosage in the spring of 2010. Nikkei Drug Information released a study in June 2011 that showed 97.4% of pharmacists nationwide admit having given the wrong dosage to their patients. They all agreed that clearly printed tablets will be extremely helpful when dispersing drugs. All the more making the team more determined to see this technology succeed. The advantage of being able to print the product name directly on the tablet is that it allows both medical professionals and patients themselves to easily identify what drug each individual tablet contains by product name, preventing prescribing and dosing errors. Because antiplatelet drugs in particular are high-risk drugs that inhibit clotting, their use needs to be discontinued before surgery, and having the product name printed on the tablets themselves makes it much easier for medical professionals and patients to identify the drug. It is our dream to see this technology spread around the world to ensure safety when distributing medications to patients or loved ones; or when patients are taking the medicines themselves.
