The left-wing surge of the U.S. working class during the Great Depression of the 1930s compelled the Democratic Party to prioritize serving the working class more than it had before or would again. It was called the New Deal. In response, the US employer class, angry that taxes on corporations and the rich were used to fund government programs for the people, turned to the Republican Party after World War II ended in 1945 and directed it to roll back the New Deal, reducing or eliminating all it had accomplished. Because the New Deal made the great mistake of leaving profits in the hands of employers, the employers used those profits to provide Republicans with the means to defeat the Democrats and roll back the New Deal. In response, the Democrats sought funding, finding it in the hands of many donors who had supported the Republicans. For many years, the U.S. was led by one party or the other: the GOP rolled back the New Deal faster, while the Democrats did so more slowly—one ruling class, two parties to serve it. The 2008 Great Recession ended the cozy system, as both parties had to protect the privileges of the corporations and the rich, even as the US empire and economy declined. As the mass of people suffered and neither the GOP nor the Democrats stopped it, people became desperate and elected Trump out of rage and hysteria. He did not and will not solve the fundamental problems any more than his predecessors did. For that, a genuinely new and different political party is needed — one that puts the American Working People First, the American majority. The program concludes with suggestions on how such a new party could truly transform the country and address its most pressing problems.   The d@w Team Economic Update with Richard D. Join Jim and Greg for the Friday edition of the 3 Martini Lunch as they cover three big stories: the arrest of Charlie Kirk's alleged assassin, whether this tragedy will further silence conservative speech on campus, and Kamala Harris' contradictory claims about Joe Biden's re-election bid.First, they breathe a sigh of relief as Kirk's 22-year-old alleged murderer is taken into custody. They react to reports that the suspect's family members played key roles in the arrest and there was anti-fascist" writings on the ammunition. They also rip the lefties who argue that Antifa can't really be a problem because they label themselves as anti-fascists.Next, they dig into concerns that Kirk's assassination will make it harder to have conservative voices on campus because schools will argue they cannot afford security and the student groups can't either. They also weigh in on the debate over whether people who repulsively posted their excitement over Kirk's murder should lose their jobs. Finally, they end the week on the lighter side by noting Kamala Harris' forthcoming book will say it was "reckless" for Joe Biden to try to run for re-election. At the same time, Harris insists Biden was perfectly up to the job. So which is it? Jim also notes how Biden loyalists are now publicly attacking Harris through anonymous quotes in response and the GOP should start popping the popcorn. Please visit our great sponsors:Support your health with Dose Daily.  Save 25% on your first month when you subscribe at https://DoseDaily.co/3ML or enter code 3ML at checkout. Keep your skin looking and acting younger for longer. Get 15% off OneSkin with the code 3ML at https://www.OneSkin.co/This Fall, save up to 50% on select plants at Fast Growing Trees—plus get an extra 15% off your first purchase with code MARTINI at https://www.Fast-Growing-Trees.com (limited time, terms apply).

Trump: Possibly Have Kirk Suspect in Custody; Bolsonaro Sentenced to Over 27 Years in Prison | NTD Good Morning President Donald Trump said on Fox & Friends on Friday morning that law enforcement officers have detained a suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The FBI said they had recovered trace evidence of shoe impressions, a forearm imprint, and a palm print from the crime scene. They also said they recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle nearby. The Bureau is offering a reward of up to $100,000 dollars for any information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect.Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for his role in an attempted coup. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing, calling the case political persecution under current President Lula da Silva. Trump said the conviction was very bad for Brazil, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled it a witch hunt. After bipartisanship failed to be effective, Republicans invoked the so-called nuclear option on Thursday, changing the Senate's rules to fast-track Trump's nominees. An unspecified number of nominees will now be confirmed with a simple majority. The first vote is expected to take place next week with 48 nominees. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned that Republicans will regret making the change. The GOP move comes after Democrats have stalled nearly 150 of Trump's nominees.

This Day in Legal History: SCOTUS Rejects Challenge to BrownOn September 12, 1958, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision in Cooper v. Aaron, firmly rejecting a challenge by the State of Arkansas to the enforcement of Brown v. Board of Education. In the wake of Brown, which declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, Arkansas officials sought to delay desegregation efforts in Little Rock, citing violent resistance and the need to preserve public order. The state's governor and legislature argued they were not bound by the Court's ruling. The Supreme Court rejected that claim unequivocally. In a rare decision signed by all nine justices, the Court reaffirmed the supremacy of the Constitution and the binding nature of its interpretations. It stated that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land," and that the Court's rulings are final and must be followed by all states, regardless of political disagreement or local unrest. The ruling was a direct rebuke to Governor Orval Faubus, who had used the Arkansas National Guard to block the entry of nine Black students into Little Rock Central High School in 1957. President Eisenhower had responded by sending federal troops to enforce the desegregation order. Cooper v. Aaron underscored the federal judiciary's power to enforce constitutional rights, even in the face of open defiance by state authorities. The Court's opinion in Cooper was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, signaling that federal law could not be nullified by state action. It also clarified that resistance to judicial decisions, especially on constitutional matters, was itself unconstitutional. By reasserting its own authority and that of the federal government, the Court helped ensure that desegregation would proceed, however slowly, across the South.Senate Republicans pushed through a rule change aimed at speeding up the confirmation of President Donald Trump's executive-branch nominees. In a 53-45 vote, the GOP majority limited the ability of Senate Democrats to slow the process, allowing groups of nominees to be confirmed together rather than individually. The change does not apply to Cabinet heads or federal judges.Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the move, saying the chamber was being bogged down by procedural delays. In contrast, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff warned the rule change weakens institutional checks on presidential power, calling it a further erosion of Senate independence. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized it as enabling a “conveyor belt of unqualified nominees.”This is the third significant alteration in 12 years to Senate rules that weaken the minority party's influence, a trend that began with Democrats in 2013 and continued under Republicans in 2017. Critics argue the Senate is drifting away from its traditional role as a stabilizing body in the legislative process. The first group of Trump nominees could see expedited confirmation as early as next week. Stephen Miran's Federal Reserve nomination will proceed under the prior rules.US Senate loosens rule to speed confirmation of some Trump nominees | ReutersA federal judge in Seattle issued a nationwide injunction blocking the Trump administration from enforcing a policy that would have barred undocumented children from enrolling in Head Start, a federal preschool program for low-income families. Judge Ricardo Martinez ruled that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) lacked the authority to impose immigration-based restrictions on access to Head Start, criticizing the agency for failing to follow proper rulemaking procedures. The decision followed a similar ruling one day earlier from a federal judge in Rhode Island, which halted the policy in 21 Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia. The Seattle lawsuit was brought by Head Start associations from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin, along with two parent advocacy groups. They challenged a July directive that expanded the interpretation of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) to include Head Start among programs limited to legal residents.Since 1998, HHS had interpreted the law as not applying to non-postsecondary education programs like Head Start. Judge Martinez stated that Congress had effectively endorsed that interpretation by not altering the law and had even broadened access to Head Start over time. Despite recent limits by the U.S. Supreme Court on nationwide injunctions, Martinez justified his decision as necessary to provide uniform relief.Trump policy barring migrants from Head Start blocked nationwide | ReutersThe U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies, accusing the company of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by discriminating against riders with disabilities. Filed in federal court in San Francisco, the complaint alleges that Uber drivers have routinely denied rides to passengers who use service animals or wheelchairs, and sometimes insulted or mistreated them. The DOJ claims that Uber also imposed illegal fees on disabled riders, including cleaning charges for service animals and cancellation fees for rides that drivers refused to complete. The lawsuit details incidents involving 17 individuals, such as a 7-year-old amputee denied a ride due to his wheelchair, a veteran with a service dog who missed a flight after being refused service, and a blind man in New Jersey whose ride requests were repeatedly canceled. The government is seeking an injunction to stop further violations, mandatory improvements to Uber's policies and training, monetary damages for those affected, and a civil penalty. In response, Uber denied the allegations, stating it has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and is committed to accessibility and inclusion for riders with disabilities.US sues Uber, alleges discrimination against disabled riders | ReutersWe'll see you back here on Monday and, until then, note. Our mouth sounds unrelated to the week's closing music ends here. This week's closing theme is by Clara Schumann. This week's closing music features a brilliant piece by Clara Schumann, a composer, pianist, and musical force whose work was often overshadowed by the men around her—most notably her husband Robert Schumann and close friend Johannes Brahms. Yet Clara was a prodigy in her own right, performing across Europe and composing with a clarity and emotional depth that demanded attention in a male-dominated 19th-century musical world. Her Scherzo No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 14, written in 1845, is a striking example of her compositional voice—bold, technically challenging, and emotionally complex. The piece opens with stormy, rapid-fire passages that give way to more lyrical interludes, showcasing Clara's mastery of contrast and dramatic pacing. It's music that demands virtuosity but also rewards listeners with its structural elegance and passionate energy. As you listen, consider how Clara's work stood alongside—and at times surpassed—that of her more famous peers. Her Scherzo No. 2 is not just a curiosity from a historical figure, but a work of enduring artistic merit that more than earns its place in the canon.Without further ado, Clara Schumann's Scherzo No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 14, enjoy! Charlie Kirk was a lightning rod ... of energy for the conservative base at the younger demographic the GOP sorely needed help with ... of controversy for those he targeted with his rhetoric ... and now, his assassination has exposed deep rifts within our society, empathetically, morally, politically and religiously.I, myself, didn't have a cogent response to share with anyone - for hours Wednesday afternoon. What I knew before he was killed hasn't changed much: he was anti-gay, vehemently anti-trans, some might argue antisemitic and made several insulting statements about black people (does that make him a racist or was he just tone deaf? I'll let others decide).I found myself watching as those on the right hailed him as being a wonderful young man (to whom?) and devout Christian (but is Christianity comfortable with his representation of their faith, with his rhetoric?) while the rest of the American spectrum mostly coalesced around the prevailing thought: no one should lose their life exercising their First Amendment right. Now, for me, it's ironic this occurred in Utah, an open carry haven where someone with a hunting rifle visible in their vehicle on the college campus parking lot elicits no reaction. Charlie did, infamously say "I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights."Then there's this: how he was assassinated and that no suspect has been found gives me reason to suspect an outside influence.

CNN's Victor Blackwell hosted a panel last week to discuss the canary in the coal mine - a notable rise in unemployment among not only black Americans, but black women. On that panel: Black Voters Matter Fund co-founder LaTosha Brown, former GOP Georgia Senate candidate Stephanie Donegan, and Capital B national editor Dalila Paul. First, let's applaud that CNN fielded an all-black and female panel to discuss an issue impacting black women. You'd think it obvious to do that, but cable TV news isn't usually good at that.Still it was Donegan, the former GOP candidate, who leaned into tropes like 'affirmative action' and 'DEI' placing black women in positions, saying "ultimately a lot of the hiring, I feel that's happened within the federal government, was to check boxes for DEI."Notice she said "I feel ...;" not that she had evidence or data. Just "I feel ..."On with me to discuss her remarks and all the negative impacts of the second Trump presidency impacting black women is - yay me! - a black woman. GOP Congresswoman Nancy Mace lost her temper on the House floor on Wednesday. It all started when Mace unleashed a long, vile tirade about transgender Americans. After that, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, a Democrat, offered some cutting criticism of the absurdity of GOP anti-trans rhetoric. That prompted Mace to fly into a fury and start shouting. We think this is a telling moment: We're all supposed to just put up with it while the right unleashes nonstop vitriol and hate. But when a Democrat offers admittedly provocative pushback—albeit something that doesn't come close to routine right wing rhetoric—it's taken as this enormous affront, as if the Earth has been knocked off its axis. We talked to Representative Jacobs about the exchange, what we can learn from it, why she takes rhetoric like this personally, and how Democrats should navigate the complexities of the overall issue.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? After that, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, a Democrat, offered some cutting criticism of the absurdity of GOP anti-trans rhetoric. That prompted Mace to fly into a fury and start shouting. We think this is a telling moment: We're all supposed to just put up with it while the right unleashes nonstop vitriol and hate. But when a Democrat offers admittedly provocative pushback—albeit something that doesn't come close to routine right wing rhetoric—it's taken as this enormous affront, as if the Earth has been knocked off its axis.
