One of the things I love about doing this podcast is that I get a variety of people that come through my life. In this case it's Bill Healey, who I've known probably 25 plus years. His role, his part of the art ecosystem is different than many of the other people I've had on, and that is of a collector. He's a true collector who has this unique history, which I went into and I found very, interesting. How he went from economics, to commercial development, to then retiring and devoting his life to art. First Western art, Russells, Remingtons, etc., followed by an epiphany when he was at the Heard Museum, seeing images of the Native American boarding schools. I remember that exhibit very well. I have one of these images in my own collection hanging in my own office. I look at it all the time just to help keep me grounded. Well, that image really set him off on a new odyssey to understand Native art and  history in a different way. He then sold off the majority of this Western material, and focused on collecting Indigenous American art. Bill has built this huge collection, part of which he donated to the Saint Louis Art Museum. They did a beautiful book on the collection and he's going to continue to give away pieces that he's collected to museum institutions to help tell the story of indigenous artists ranging from 1920 to today. It's a fun ride of through his life and over 60 years of collecting. I think it's a real gift that Bill shared it with us.

To follow up my perspective seeking conversation with Gray Parsons of the Secotan Alliance, I sat down next with Chief Marilyn Berry Morrison of the Roanoke-Hatteras Tribe. I asked Chief Morrison the same question: why do you think the misconception exists that Indigenous Americans no longer exist in the eastern part of the United States? She had similar thoughts to share. Chief Morrison spoke a lot about fear and shame stemming from the trauma of the past. She also clued me in to a personal journey she's been on for quite some time, a journey to get state and national recognition for her ancestry and her tribe, the Roanoke-Hatteras, and the unnecessary difficulty involved in the process. Jacob explains how the post-2008 economic environment allowed the tech industry to amass an enormous amount of wealth and political power, using access to cheap credit and government contracts to embed themselves into democratic institutions. He then explains how the ascendance of culture wars, addictions to posting online and deep seeded resentment led to the formation of a violent, reactionary politics that now dominates much of the Western world, and could threaten the very concept of democracy.

Patient navigation has become one of the most powerful tools for improving breast cancer outcomes — and in Native American communities, it can be lifesaving. From long travel distances to specialty care, to navigating complex referral systems, to ensuring communication is culturally grounded and respectful, navigation helps Native patients feel supported every step of the way. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we're joined by Linda Burhansstipanov, MSPH, DrPH (Cherokee Nation) — founder of the Native American Cancer Research Corp. and a pioneer in developing culturally appropriate patient navigation models for Indigenous American communities. Dr. Burhansstipanov shares insights about how navigation strengthens trust, improves follow-through on screening and treatment, and supports families and entire communities. She also breaks down practical ways health systems and partners like Komen can work together to meet people where they are and help Native patients feel seen, respected and cared for.

This week I'm shattering preconceived notions that Indigenous Americans north of Mexico didn't build cities. That they organized, instead, into only small, nomadic villages. Because, for around 800 years there was a great city, the largest pre-Colombian city north of Mexico, a city that, if you were to have visited in the year 1200, is theorized to have been larger than both London and Paris at that same time. In fact, it held the record for largest city in the now United States for almost 700 years from around 1100 until Philadelphia broke the record in the 1780s. I'm talking about the city of Cahokia which sprawled along the Mississippi River in southern Illinois, a testament to the true scale, potential, and abilities of Indigenous Americans in what is now the United States. Greg Jenner is joined in the 18th century by Professor Frank Cogliano and comedian and actor Patton Oswalt to learn about the American War of Independence. Also known as the American Revolutionary War, 2025 marks 250 years since the start of the conflict in 1775, when the first battles between the British army and the colonial resistance were fought at Lexington and Concord. But what caused Britain's North American colonies to rebel against the king and government in London? At what point did they start to see themselves as American and not British? And how did a colonial militia take on an imperial superpower?This episode charts the growing rift between Britain and its American colonists, taking in famous events like the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party and the calling of the first Continental Congress, all the way through to the Declaration of Independence and the course of the revolutionary war itself. We learn how America fought to free itself from the shackles of British rule, and meet some well-known names from history, including Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and George Washington.
