In this installment, after the team opens with a discussion about new legislation in California that seeks to make Bigfoot the official state cryptid, we are joined by researcher Jeff Carpenter, who discusses his experiences covering more than 20 years of research into the Sasquatch (Bigfoot) legend as well as local history/legends from the WNC mountains. Jeff grew up learning outdoor craft of hunting and tracking from his father, Earvin Carpenter. He is a descendant of some of the earliest settlers of the Western North Carolina mountains, including his grandfather, Harley Carpenter who was one of the first mountain people written about in the well-known Foxfire book series on Appalachian Mountain Living. Jeff is currently a Field Investigator for the Bigfoot Research Organization which interviews witness reports as well as documenting them for further study.  He is also a member of the East Coast Expeditions Group, Kentucky Bigfoot Organization and the Co-Founder of the Appalachian Sasquatch Research Project.  Jeff has presented his research findings during presentations he has given in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, as well as being a guest speaker on numerous podcasts.  He made an appearance in the Small Town Monsters documentary movie titled “ On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Ancients”, which can be seen on YouTube and Amazon Prime, as well as other streaming channels. Jeff is the former Director of the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department where heworked for 32 years and is now retired.  He is a graduate of Western Carolina University and still resides in Sylva. My special guest tonight is Cliff Barackman who is a Bigfoot Field Researcher and Co-Host of Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot www.CliffBarackman.com   Alleged behavior Some Bigfoot researchers allege that Bigfoot throws rocks as territorial displays and for communication.[80][81][82] Other alleged behaviors include audible blows struck against trees or "wood knocking", further alleged to be communicative.[83][84][85] Skeptics argue that these behaviors are easily hoaxed.[86] Additionally, structures of broken and twisted foliage seemingly placed in specific areas have been attributed by some to Bigfoot behavior.[87] In some reports, lodgepole pine and other small trees have been observed bent, uprooted, or stacked in patterns such as weaved and crisscrossed, leading some to theorize that they are potential territorial markings.[88]Some instances have also included entire deer skeletons being suspended high in trees.[89] In Washington state, a team of amateur Bigfoot researchers called the Olympic Project claimed to have discovered a collection of nests, and they had primatologists study them, with the conclusion being that they appear to have been created by a primate.[90] Many alleged sightings are reported to occur at night leading to some speculations that the creatures may possess nocturnal tendencies.[91] However, experts find such behavior untenable in a supposed ape- or human-like creature, as all known apes, including humans, are diurnal, with only lesser primates exhibiting nocturnality.[92] Most anecdotal sightings of Bigfoot describe the creatures allegedly observed as solitary, although some reports have described groups being allegedly observed together.[93] Alleged vocalizations Alleged vocalizations such as howls, screams, moans, grunts, whistles, and even a form of supposed language have been reported and allegedly recorded.[94][95] Some of these alleged vocalization recordings have been analyzed by individuals such as retired U.S. Navy cryptologic linguist Scott Nelson. He analyzed audio recordings from the early 1970s said to be recorded in the Sierra Nevada mountains dubbed the "Sierra Sounds" and stated, "It is definitely a language, it is definitely not human in origin, and it could not have been faked".[96] Les Stroud has spoken of a strange vocalization he heard in the wilderness while filming Survivorman that he stated sounded primate in origin.[97] The majority of mainstream scientists maintain that the source of the sounds often attributed to Bigfoot are either hoaxes, anthropomorphization, or likely misidentified and produced by known animals such as owl, wolf, coyote, and fox.[98][99][100] Alleged encounters A story from 1924, often referred to as the "Battle of Ape Canyon", presents miners being attacked by large, hairy "ape men" that threw rocks onto their cabin roof from a nearby cliff after one of the miners allegedly shot one with a rifle.[101] In Fouke, Arkansas in 1971, a family reported that a large, hair-covered creature startled a woman after reaching through a window. Hey there friends and weirdos! In this one, we talk about a man named Albert Ostman and his experience being kidnapped by a family of Sasquatches! How do you escape Bigfoot captivity with only coffee, tobacco snuff, and your wits and live to tell the tale? Was Ostman meant to breed with these Bigfeet? Also, what exactly does Bigfoot have going on "down there"? We answer all these questions and so much more!

Perhaps the most famous cryptid of all time is Bigfoot or Sasquatch. Normally, I like to do a “Story of…” post before I start posting stories and sightings of these creatures. It has been tough to track down one source of the first story; there are many opinions on where it all began. So, I will try to summarize a few that I think may have started it. At a later time, I will be posting sightings from in or around Appalachia because they seem to happen all the time!Leif Ericson and his men are thought to be the first European explorers of North America. During their first visit in 986 AD, they reported seeing something strange. Leif wrote of huge hairy men who towered over him and his men. These men were loud and foul-smelling and lived in the woods. They had several encounters with the creatures and noted they were very different from the other natives they found in the new world.Another documented early story I found happened in 1924. Albert Ostman, a lumberjack and outdoorsman, was asleep in his sleeping bag on a vacation camping trip in British Columbia when a Sasquatch picked him up and carried him for about 3 hours. He was taken to what seemed like a family of four creatures. Most reports say he was held captive for 6 days by the creatures. All that is known about Ostman's time with them is that they fed him some type of sweet grass. Ostman was able to escape after he gave the largest creature some snuff, which caused it to get sick.On August 27, 1958, near Bluff Creek, California, Jerry Crew arrived at a road construction site for work one morning and found tracks measuring a whopping 18 inches in length. He showed the prints to his co-workers, who referred to whatever was making the prints as “Big Foot,” thus giving the creature its name. A month later, more prints were found, and a plaster casting was made of one of them.The Patterson and Gimlin footage from 1967 is the last one I'll cover this go-round. On October 20, 1967, Patterson and Gimlin were horseback riding around 1:15 in the afternoon. They went around a downed tree and noticed a figure crouching, a man-like creature. They observed that it was about 7 foot 6 inches tall and covered in dark reddish-brown or black hair. Thinking this was odd, Patterson dismounted his horse and took out his camera. Paterson started running towards it while filming, which he explains is why the footage is so shaky, and at one point he even tripped. The creature eventually noticed the two and began walking away but looked back at them before disappearing. This video is probably the one that started the hype surrounding Bigfoot. It is how I first heard of him as a kid.There you have it. These are some of the biggest stories that have encouraged Bigfoot fever. There are reports, pictures, and even videos of sightings of the creature all over the US these days. I have even seen several very near where I live. One day, I might cover some of those. In the majestic mountains and regal forests of British Columbia Canada, east of Vancouver Island and off the Pacific Ocean, lies a vast land rich with cedar, hemlock, pine and other evergreen trees that reach to the skies.  It's 1924, and Albert Ostman is taking a short break from his full-time job as a logger and construction worker.  He had heard the area was full of gold, and was ready to do a bit of prospecting, as was the common hobby of the wilderness during the turn of the century.  Men, and women, had found their fortunes in these hills, and Albert was ready to find his.  But according to his own account of that hot summer in the northern cascade mountains, what he found was much more valuable… and much more haunting. Thank you for listening to this retelling of the 1924 tale of Albert Ostman's abduction. In 1924 deep within the dense wilderness of British Columbia, one of the most unique encounters with Bigfoot occurred... A young hardworking lumberman named Albert Ostman, ventured out on his own after deciding to do a bit of gold prospecting around the Toba Inlet, situated on the B.C. coast. At first, things were going perfectly. He'd hiked for several days, witnessed awe-inspiring scenery, and finally found what seemed to be a perfect campsite to build his home base for the next several weeks he'd planned to stay. This was just the kind of break he'd been looking for from his years of hard work in construction and lumber. Rumors of gold had led him to this area, and he planned on doing his best to find some of his own. About a week later a few lumberjacks noticed a disheveled man wandering out of the woods. Clearly hungry and visibly shaken, the lumberjacks took him in, fed him, and gave him shelter. It was Albert Ostman, who explained that he'd gotten lost while out prospecting for gold. It wasn't until nearly 30 years later that Ostman finally told the truth about what happened to him on that trip...and on this week's show, we talk about this absolutely fascinating encounter. Bob Garrett will be joining me for this show. Albert Ostman (died 1975) was a Canadian prospector who reported that he was abducted by a Sasquatch and held captive for six days. He stated that the event took place near Toba Inlet, British Columbia in 1924. On August 20, 1957, police magistrate A.M. Naismith wrote an affidavit which states "...I found Mr. Ostman to be a man of sixty-four years of age; in full possession of his mental faculties. Of pleasant manner and with a good sense of humor. I questioned Mr. Ostman thoroughly in reference to the story given by Mr. Green. I cross-examined him and used every means to endeavor to find a flaw in either his personality or his story, but could find neither..."Albert Ostman also signed a Solemn Declaration indicating that his account of the Sasquatch story was true under oath and by virtue of the Canadian Evidence Act.

Some tales are tall tales, and some tales involve an ape-like creature that stands over 7 feet tall and weighs around 700 pounds. Such was the tale of Albert Ostman, who claimed that in 1924, while on a leisurely prospecting trip in British Columbia, Canada, he was kidnapped in the middle of the night by a Sasquatch, or what is more commonly known as "Bigfoot." While some folks might be quick to dismiss Mr. Ostman's story as a stretch of the truth by no small means, it's hard to deny the folksy charm and curious wonder his tale invokes, whether tall tale or sober testimony.
