Send us a textDiscover a rare comedic gem from the vault! Before Kevin Pollak became the acclaimed actor we know from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and countless Hollywood films, he was honing his craft as a brilliant stand-up comedian and impressionist at Laughs Unlimited comedy club. This nostalgic episode features Pollak at the height of his stand-up powers, showcasing the incredible impression skills that would later help launch his acting career. His routine begins with sharp observations about Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie success, questioning why the Academy consistently overlooks him with the hilarious punchline, "Do these people need a verb?" But the true highlight comes when Kevin launches into an elaborate Star Trek parody that demonstrates his remarkable versatility as a performer.Pollak's impression of William Shatner as Captain Kirk is nothing short of masterful, perfectly capturing the actor's distinctive dramatic pauses and theatrical delivery. The routine evolves into a tour de force as Kevin portrays multiple celebrity personalities aboard the Enterprise, each with their own distinct voice and mannerisms. His ability to seamlessly transition between these characters reveals the impressive range that would eventually make him such a sought-after character actor in film and television. For fans of comedy history, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse at the early career of an artist who would go on to achieve tremendous success in Hollywood. Check then out on SHOPAssociation.org Today, EPISODE 83… I talk with Bryan Meszaros founder of EpenEye Global. Bryan is a 25-year veteran of the digital signage and experience design industry, known for blending innovation with measurable impact. Naturally, in a world that is increasingly digitally mediated, Bryan's business is significantly focused on the emergence of Artificial Intelligence as a tool in his experience place-making toolbox. We'll get to more of how Bryan sees the use of AI in digital applications in brand experience places in a minute but... first a few thoughts…*                     *                          *                          *I grew up on Star Trek. They original version with Shatner as Captain James T Kirk. These were the sightly campy years in black and white but wonderfully prescient in foretelling what was to come. I used to say that my father, who lived to the ripe old age of 97 was so into it that was holding out until he could just beam up through the transporter to the next phase of his existence. We all watched, my 4 brothers and I every week, my mom? Well not so much…I got used to thinking about digital communication, robots, space travel and technology integrated into our lives facilitating everything from washing dishes to extending lifespans. There isn't a day that goes by now where my media consumption doesn't include something on the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. Both the amazing and the alarming.  How it will make workplaces completely different replacing much of what we now do with human brain and brawn with algorithms and computer chips that can fit 1000 computers from the old Star Trek days on your fingertip. How it is changing the way human brains are wired, though when it comes to our neural networks that trundle along at a speed ridiculously slow compared to the digital pace of change that is exponential and moving at the speed of light. How as a visualization tool it is becoming indistinguishable from real life people and places. Creating deep fakes that are so good at impersonating humans that avatars are no longer cartoonish but facsimiles of us that are, well, exactly like us - but whose knowledge base is the compendium of all human knowledge that can be accessed on the internet and provide cogent answers to well-crafted prompts and have them served up in a few seconds. ‘The times they are a changin' but at a pace that even Dillan couldn't have imagined. Don't even get me started about when we finally, and I don't think it is going to take too long, get to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and what that portends for humankind. I am often concerned for my sons and the world they are growing into as young adults. I wish sometimes that they'd have had the experience of growing up in the 60's and 70's when times were simpler – but of course they weren't really. Every decade has it's messes – sometime beautiful sometimes not and sometimes each of these ends of the human experience spectrum were happening at the same time. What we are experiencing now is evolution at a revolutionary pace. A slow simmering flame has exploded into a blast furn ace of change propelling us all, whether we like it or not, on a path that at times seems to be heading towards the edger of a cliff. Concerned? Well you'd have good reason to be.But then again, if you accept the Ray Bradburry adage of sometimes while standing at the edge of the cliff ‘you need to jump and build your wings on the way down', may we all then transform in midflight into some sort of lemmings with wings. The subject of AI has surfaced a number of times on this podcast notably with data visualization artists like Refik Anadol and architect artist Samar Younes,  spatial computing specialist and near futurist Neil Redding and Synchronicity Architect Justin Bolognino. Each of these creators and theorists shape the AI narrative to their own ends, each of them proclaiming the virtues and vices of the technology.Uses of AI in design and architecture, as well as other industries, is multifarious and, I would admit, well beyond my more general appreciation for using it as an ideation tool and writing assistant in my everyday work.In the world of experience design there are at least 2 ways - although I would guess many more - to look at it:- on a very basic level there is the physical integration of digital media facilitated by Ai and then there is actual content that ends up on the digital interface – be it a touch screen kiosk, a display array in a sports bar or an enormous multi-story wall in Times Square. Getting these screens to work with the environment is always a challenge. Mainly I believe because they come as an afterthought rather than an integrated design solution and part of a digital experience strategy. In the second case of content, one size does not fit all. Places and people are different. The same content being played on those screens all day are visual noise detracting from overall experience rather than enhancing it. These days, every minute of every day things are changing. Why should digital content on screen of any size and shape be any different? If purveyors of brand experiences are not changing content to adapt to customers everchanging needs across the journey, digital content simply becomes part of the visual texture of the environment slipping into irrelevancy and lending nothing to the embodied memory of a place. This is one area Ai is able to change the game – creating content to meet customer needs more directly. Now it would be difficult, if not impossible to change digital content in Times Square to continually meet the needs of the thousands of people in that digital epicenter in New York. But then we all carry cell phones – person digital devices. All of those phones are geolocated. Each of those those has an address – a personal identifier about who it belongs to and bunch of other information about you – personal, financial, home address, etc.Are a bunch of guys at google looking at you individually as you make your way across Times Square – not really – but your Hazel and Gretel trail of ones and zeros from purchases, GPS searches, app use, etc., etc., tell a lot about you should anyone want to do a little digital forensics. The idea here is that we are giving up this information every time we turn our phones on. That information isn't snatched from us without our consent (generally) it's in our service agreement terms and conditions – that impossibly long text that most of us scroll through to the end and click “agree.”But that information could be used to make your path across Times Square more relevant to you. Perhaps your device communicates with other devices or screens and changes the content that you see. This isn't quite Minority Report yet, where Tom Cruise courses through a store and the displays are talking to him because they recognize his retinas – but it is possible to create messaging that is more personalized to you, specifically, as a customer.Digital signage can change either on the wall of as shelf signage. It is about recognizing your customer and understanding that they are used to creating experience narratives that are more relevant to them because they, in part, have contributed to their making. Want to stay relevant to your customers, new or old? Support their collaboration in the shopping journey offering up opportunities for them to write themselves into the narrative. Story and strategy must be connected. Doing good by your customer is about building a relationship and Ai can support that effort but including engaging digital content that recognizes them as individuals, with relatable and relevant messaging. But the whole enterprise needs to be seamless. Sometime I think that the best tech is the tech you don't see, but it think it is also perfectly OK to see it if there are no disconnects in journey. Signature moments in the customer journey have to link up so the customer follows the bouncing ball from their first connection point through the purchase moment and then beyond. And this is where this episode's guest comes into the picture.Bryan Meszaros is a 25-year veteran of the digital signage and experience design industry, known for blending innovation with measurable impact. As the founder of OpenEye Global, he proved that a small, focused team can deliver big results and helped shape the early evolution of digital engagement.Bryan was the youngest President of SEGD and the first with a digital centric background, while also contributing to the Digital Signage Federation and Shop! This is the big one. Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly join me to break down their explosive new IDW Star Trek saga The Last Starship — a story set hundreds of years after the TNG era, long after the familiar map of the Federation has been shattered by a galaxy-wide catastrophe. In this far-future Trek epic, a desperate Starfleet captain takes one last swing at survival: resurrecting James T. Kirk. Not a simulation. Not a hologram. The real deal — brought back because he might be the only mind capable of solving the crisis threatening what's left of the galaxy.Lanzing & Kelly get candid about craft, collaboration, canon, and why this story had to be told now. If you love thoughtful sci-fi, bold Trek worldbuilding, and big character swings, you're going to want to dive into this conversation.

The Enterprise Incident (Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), S3 E2) was recommended by IronBoomer; He/Him, who said: This one is largely fun from start to finish, as we literally start with Kirk acting out of his regular character, ordering the Enterprise into Romulan Territory; where they're prompted confronted by Romulans, who now have cloaking devices.Where this gets fun is watching Shatner purposefully overact as Kirk not acting "normal" and Nimoy getting to lean on the whole "no-emotions" with Spock purposefully seducing the Romulan commander. It really looks like he's gonna tap that Commander at one point, even if it's a seeming ruse. The Enterprise Incident first aired on December 20, 1968, written by Edward J. Hello my beautiful listening audience. Welcome to this week's installment, Led Lightnin. Leading off would be Lightnin' Hopkins, a fantastic blues singer and guitar picker from the old school. A musician that I discovered after getting into vinyl records and I'm very glad that I found his music. As always, I think the warm and fuzzy sound of this Hendrix 45 is really something. My Kanye collection on vinyl never disappoints, his stuff was engineered and mixed really well. I read that his Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album is the most expensive hip hop album to ever be produced and you can really hear the quality in the 180 gram vinyl. The 808 bottom end sounds really make it through the vinyl pressing and it is always impressive to me. I imagine I'll be here piled up for another eppy next weekend but most likely after that I'll be slowing down. Probably to one episode a month or something like that. As always, thank you for tuning into another installment with your favorite internet disc jockey. The Captain Kirk of this Enterprise,DJ Witwicka Juan Don

A Note from the Host: Please accept my sincere apology for the audio quality on my end of this recording. Despite buying new equipment to improve the audio quality, I made a rookie mistake. I didn't look at my own audio levels before recording and didn't notice my four-year-old maxed out the volume on my mixer. Despite my best efforts to fix it in post-production, my audio is unfortunately quite distorted. Justin Hunsaker's audio is perfect, and that is where the real value lies. I ask you to forgive my technical error and embrace the fantastic communication insights Justin shares. The lesson he delivers on clarity and audience focus is one I clearly need to re-learn!The Expert Trap: How Your Knowledge Can Sabotage Your TrainingHow do you go from being a software engineer to an executive communication coach? For Justin Hunsaker, it was realizing that the through-line of all success is communication.Justin, the author of Presentation Pitfalls, joins us to discuss his upcoming presentation at the Training Conference and Expo: “The expert trap: how knowing too much can sabotage your training and presentations”.The “expert trap” is defined as when presenters focus on their expertise rather than what their audience needs to learn, resulting in a message that never completely gets conveyed. Justin emphasizes that in communication, your audience comes first.Spock vs. Kirk: The Emotional vs. Logical VoiceJustin suggests everyone has two voices in their head: the Mr. Spock (logical, sequential, data-oriented) and the Captain Kirk (emotional, storytelling). The expert trap is relying solely on Mr. Spock. To avoid this, Justin recommends:* Start with a story to get emotional engagement (Captain Kirk).* Introduce facts and logic (Mr. Spock) to provide credibility and confidence that you've done the expertise work.* End with the story. This approach works because people buy with emotion and justify with logic. Storytelling is much more primal to the human experience than a sequence of facts, making information stickier. The Signal to Noise Ratio: Cutting the FatExperts often feel everything they know is important and needs to be included, but this creates noise that distracts the audience from the three most important facts they should remember.Justin and his partner's four-part presentation framework includes Reduce Noise. If an expert can't explain when a piece of information will be valuable to the learner, it becomes noise that should be put in a handout or an appendix. He advises using the military's BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) framework to flip a history-lesson approach upside down and lead with the most important answer.Tools for the Modern CommunicatorJustin is excited about how AI (Large Language Models) can help experts communicate better. He suggests asking a large language model to generate 10 analogies for a complex topic, allowing the expert to quickly select the most resonant one for their audience. The Platinum Rule of PresentationsJustin teaches that presentation design is a function of your audience, your purpose, and your setting—the presenter is not included. This reinforces the number one rule of training: It's not about you.The 3F Framework for Instant PresenceAs a final tip, Justin shares the 3F Framework for leveling up your communication in just three minutes before any important conversation:* Facts: Write down the three facts you want your audience to remember.* Feelings: Write down the feelings you and your audience have going into the conversation.* Follow-ups: Write down what you promise to do after the conversation, and what you want your audience to promise to do.Key Takeaways* Audience First: The expert trap is focusing on what you know instead of what the audience needs to learn. The design of your training should focus on the audience, purpose, and setting—not the presenter.* Embrace Emotion: People make decisions based on emotion and justify them with logic. Start with a story (emotion/Captain Kirk) before providing data (logic/Mr. Spock).* Reduce Noise: Cut extraneous information that is only a “history lesson” of your journey. Use the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) approach to prioritize the most important answer.* The 3F Level Up: Spend three minutes before any meeting writing down the three desired Facts, the related Feelings, and the planned Follow-ups to increase your leadership presence.Justin Hunsaker's Book and Contact:* Book: Presentation Pitfalls* Contact: Find Justin on LinkedIn (he's the one with the book in the background!). In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk to stop the villain Tolian Soran from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Generations was conceived as a transition from the original cast of the Star Trek films to the cast of The Next Generation. After developing several film ideas concurrently, the producers chose a script written by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga. Production began while the final season of the television series was being made. The director was David Carson, who previously directed episodes of the television series; photography was by franchise newcomer John A. Alonzo. Filming took place on the Paramount Studios lots, and on location in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, and Lone Pine, California. The film's climax was revised and reshot following poor reception from test audiences. The film uses a mix of traditional optical effects alongside computer-generated imagery and was scored by regular Star Trek composer Dennis McCarthy. Star Trek Generations was released in the United States on November 18, 1994. Paramount promoted the film with merchandising tie-ins, including toys, books, games, and a website—a first for a major motion picture. The film opened at the top of the United States box office in its first week of release and grossed a total of $118 million worldwide. Critical reception was mixed, with critics divided on the film's characters and comprehensibility to a casual viewer. Korby finds Gamble at a doorway to the Vezda prison and the Enterprise goes to rescue him. This is a trap to lure out M'Benga, as he and Gamble need to be together to open the doorway. The crew learn that the unique combination of DNA inside Batel matches the biology of the Beholder statue that guards the prison. To open the doorway without M'Benga and Gamble, the crew devise a plan to simultaneously fire on it from the Enterprise and the Farragut; Spock performs a mind meld with James Kirk so the two can perfectly sync their actions. Pike and Batel enter the prison and confront Gamble, who destroys the Beholder and frees the other Vezda. Using her emerging power, Batel creates an illusion in which she and Pike live a full and happy life together. She then traps all the Vezda in the prison and becomes the Beholder. Pike struggles to move on without Batel as the Enterprise sets out to explore uncharted planets.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!Welcome to Trekcast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast! We're a fan-made show that dives into everything Star Trek, plus all things sci-fi, nerdy, and geeky—covering Star Wars, Marvel, DC Comics, Stargate, and more. But Trekcast isn't just about warp drives and superheroes.
