Ep.230 Carl E. Hazlewood (b. 1951) was born in Guyana, South America. Parallel to his studio practice, Hazlewood co-founded Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ in 1983. Steeped in modest materials, such as polyester, push pins, map pins and metallic string, form is foregrounded and the slippage between drawing, painting and sculpture places his work in a space that challenges the conventions of each medium, and forces the viewer to experience form on its own terms. Hazlewood explains, “Like a sculptor, I work to find 'shapes' and 'volumes', implied or actual. And like painting, the layering becomes an intuitive search for textures, color and form…I define edges, where things begin and end, where they may find relationships and multiple transitions against or into each other. I think of this as 'drawing' the accumulation of parts into active and resonant connections. Then those 'active' parts are pinned into a final configuration, something that feels properly 'evocative' yet stable as plastic form.” Solo exhibitions of his work include BlackHead Anansi: Constellations at Charlotte and Philip Hanes Gallery, Wake Forest University, South Carolina (2023); Racing Thoughts-Fever Dreaming at Art Basel Miami Beach (2022); and BlackHead Lyricism at Welancora Gallery (2022). Hazlewood has been the recipient of fellowships at the MacDowell organization (2023, 2015); the Brown Foundation at the Dora Maar House, Ménerbes, France (2018); and the Bogliasco Foundation, Italy (2018). His fifty-two-foot-tall wall work, TRAVELER (2017), was commissioned by the Knockdown Center, Queens. Collections include: The National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC , The Study Center, Bogliasco Foundation, Genova, Italy, The Dora Maar House, Ménerbes, France, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Louisiana, Museu Brasileiro da Escultura, São Paulo - Brazil, The Schomburg Center Collections, New York, NY, The University of Guyana, South America and The National Collection of Fine Arts, Castellani House, Guyana, South America. The truth is, right now in New York City, assaults and crimes against women are at an all-time high. The streets we walk every day — the places we live, work, and exist — are becoming more dangerous, and yet, this growing crisis is being brushed aside, left in the shadows. But not here.In this special podcast series for Warrior of Truth, Kelly Dillon takes a hard look at the alarming rise in assaults against women in New York City — incidents that are all too often overlooked by city officials, police and the media. Through in-depth interviews with brave survivors, Kelly uncovers the painful truth about how their assaults were dismissed, ignored, or downplayed by those sworn to protect them. These women share their stories of fear, frustration, and the long-lasting impact of not being heard.Kelly also explores the systemic failures that allow such violence to persist, examining how gaps in law enforcement, media coverage, and public attention contribute to a culture where women's safety is neglected. This series sheds light on the human cost of this crisis and asks the crucial question: What can we do to demand real change?By sharing these stories, we can create a ripple effect — a profound change in the way we approach women's safety in our city. Because the time for silence is over. It's time to take action, to face this truth head-on, and to fight for a future where every woman can feel safe.In this eye-opening episode, Kelly expands her investigation into the rising tide of violence and random aggression in New York City, shedding light on how this epidemic impacts not only women but also men. Featuring a chilling account from Alfonso Zamarripa, a man who narrowly escaped a potentially dangerous encounter outside two popular Queens nightclubs, this episode examines the broader implications of urban violence and the troubling patterns of neglect by law enforcement and public discourse.Alfonso shares the harrowing details of his experience: while waiting for an Uber outside Knockdown Center and Basement, he became the target of what appeared to be a calculated act of aggression. A car intentionally backed into him, its occupants yelling and attempting to exit the vehicle, raising questions about whether this could have been a possible abduction attempt. Alfonso's quick thinking likely saved him, but the incident underscores a growing concern in this Brooklyn/Queens neighborhood, already associated with a string of mysterious deaths involving men leaving nightclubs.Kelly and Alfonso delve deeper into the systemic failures that follow such incidents. After reporting his experience to the police, Alfonso was met with dismissal, accused of overreacting, and denied an official report—mirroring the experiences of many survivors whose fears are routinely minimized. Together, they discuss the long-term impact of this indifference, the dangers of victim-blaming, and the silencing effect of online criticism, both having faced waves of backlash for sharing their stories on social media. This episode also emphasizes the importance of breaking the silence. Kelly and Alfonso urge listeners to report unsettling incidents and share their experiences publicly, regardless of how minor they may seem. By speaking out, survivors can contribute to identifying dangerous patterns, raising awareness, and holding authorities accountable for their inaction.Sign Kelly's Change.org Petition: https://www.change.org/makeNYCsafeWatch this episode on YouTubeFollow Kelly:https://kellydillon.com/https://www.instagram.com/kelldillon/https://www.facebook.com/kellydillontv/https://twitter.com/kelly_dillonhttp://tiktok.com/@kelldillonThe truth will truly set us free. Embracing honesty in our lives not only transforms us individually but has the potential to elevate the consciousness of the world around us. In a world filled with illusions, being a warrior of truth is a courageous and transformative path.Kelly Dillon isn't your typical psychic medium. She is a time shifter and energy manipulator. Reggaefest. I've attended many Reggaefest parties, including a couple of Yacth Fetes and 2022's Blaze party by South Street Seaport. Epic League and CJ Milan have taken this party on the road with stops in Washington DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Boston, and Toronto. I believe in this brand and can see a future where it goes to Latin America and Europe—potentially even a multi-day cruise. My favorite thing about the party is the format. The party is called Reggaefest, and they mostly play Dancehall. There's also Soca, Afrobeats, a little Reggaeton, and Ampiano as of this year. They played Hip-Hop in the early ReggaeFest days(a few years ago), but I prefer they don't. Many other parties call themselves Reggae this and Reggae that, but they play close to an hour of hip-hop—false advertising on their part. I also love that there are hardly any performances. Great DJs and great music keep us dancing all night long. Having attended this party for some time and spending my hard-earned money to do so, I have a couple of criticisms. New York Reggaefest has gotten stale. Their fabulous DJ lineup keeps the vibes going, but they play the same songs at each party. A playlist that changes very little. Another criticism is the same venues all the time. Stage 48 is the main culprit. As a fan, I'd like to see a guest DJ at the monthly parties and different changes of venues. Let's do one month in SOBs and one in Irving Plaza—a day party at Knockdown Center or the Elsewhere space in Brooklyn. I wish the Reggaefest team continued success, but I haven't attended as many of their parties this year because of this stale feeling. I'd love to continue going, but please give me more variety. Friday Reading Series: Harmony Holiday & Lily Jue Sheng with Nyle Genevieve— January 10th, 2020 Hosted by Nicole Wallace. Harmony Holiday is a writer, dancer, archivist, director, and the author of four collections of poetry, Negro League Baseball, Go Find Your Father / A Famous Blues, Hollywood Forever, and A Jazz Funeral for Uncle Tom. She founded and runs Afrosonics, an archive of jazz and everyday diaspora poetics, and Mythscience, a publishing imprint that reissues and reprints works from the archive. She worked on the SOS, the selected poems of Amiri Baraka, transcribing all of his poetry recorded with jazz that has yet to be released in print and exists primarily on out-of-print records. Harmony studied Rhetoric at UC Berkeley and taught for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. She received her MFA from Columbia University and has received the Motherwell Prize from Fence Books, a Ruth Lilly Fellowship, and a NYFA Fellowship. She is currently completing a book of poems called M a à f a and an accompanying collection of essays and memoir, Love is War for Miles, both to be released this fall, as well as a biography of jazz singer Abbey Lincoln. Lily Jue Sheng works between moving image, collage, text, performance, and installation. Nyle Genevieve makes video art, comics, zines, music, and handmade apparel. They met in college at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and are both based in New York City. Nyle's series 'Winds of Change' and 'Never Sit' merge anthropomorphic existential crisis and female desire with doing everything yourself. She also plays drums for Nandas. Lily's video work 'Five Movements (五種流行之氣)' has expanded into select performances at The Knockdown Center (with Anjuli Rathod) and Roulette Intermedium (with Anjuli Rathod and Nyle Genevieve). 'Five Movements' uses cinema to describe feelings of melancholia -- the sensations of dreaming, and disrupting, myths surrounding the home. The third performance at The Poetry Project will include an expanded spoken word and unique subtitles in Shanghai dialect and English by Lily and a performed music score by Nyle.

Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display. According to data collected by the CDC, July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. In a preliminary report, the NTSB has released details this week on the June 10th crash of a helicopter atop the AXA Equities building in Midtown. New measles cases continue to decrease as the city's outbreak continues. In the latest data, there have been just 16 new cases reported in June 2019, down from highs in March and April of around 170 new cases per month. Combined with the outbreak in Rockland County, New York State continues to make up the largest percentage of the nationwide total, which, at 1,077 cases, has now surpassed numbers last seen 27 years ago and has become the largest outbreak seen since the disease was declared eliminated in the year 2000. This episode of 2MF features a conversation with artists Jenny Lee and Zuriel Waters of Sister Gallery following a meeting at Knockdown Center on November 20, 2016. The artists speaks with hosts Sonya Derman and Maria Stabio about how the structure of the office informs artists practices. We discuss the increasing professionalization, advanced degrees, and bureaucracies in the art world(s), and the benefits and downfalls from internalizing these structures. How do New York City artists, particularly with a studio-based practice, navigate, use, or subvert these systems while maintaining a sense of authenticity and purpose? Music on this episode is “Sixteen Tons” by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
