Interviews by Brainard Carey

Mara De Luca's (b. 1973, Washington D.C.) paintings evoke a sense of atmospheric abstractions that bring to mind dusk, sunsets, and planetary orbs. Throughout her work there is a sense of reflected ambient light. De Luca's work today extends the celebration of illusionism, romanticism, and the sublime with a deeply informed response to modernist painting. De Luca received an MFA from CalArts, Los Angeles, CA and a BA from Columbia University, NY. Her work has been displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and is in prominent collections, including the Buck Collection at UC Irvine, JP Morgan Chase, New York; Fidelity, Boston; Alexander Plaza Berlin, Germany; New York Medical College, New York; and the University of Oslo, Norway. She has been reviewed in Artforum, Cultured Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Artweek LA, and others. De Luca is a recipient of the 2019 California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists. She has taught Painting at UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis and UC Riverside. Based in Los Angeles for over two decades, De Luca now lives and works in New York. In this episode Jayda asks what self-love means to Rachel and hears how for her true self-love begins with knowing yourself and when to step off the “life escalator” to reclaim your authenticity. Rachel explains the courage muscle and why you have to train it to embrace your own values, including her own personal choice to remain childfree, as well as why she doesn't want that to be radical. Jayda also asks Rachel about her amazing foundation and why Rachel advocates and fundraises to make therapy more accessible to black women and girls, but why at the same time as providing free therapy to them she also campaigns to support more black therapists to be able to train. Rachel gives insight into why she thinks it's important to work with Black therapists if you are black, as well as her astute reasoning for why it's more cost-effective! Jayda also heard Rachel's advice for loving with grief and the power of reimagining in life, especially for Black people. This episode is a powerful look at self-love, therapy and healing.Follow Rachel CargleFollow Jayda GFollow Here's Hoping PodcastMore on our guest Follow The Loveland FoundationThe Loveland Foundation websiteRachel Elizabeth Cargle is an author, activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropic innovator. Ep.190 Uman's dazzling visual vocabulary reflects her life and expansive cross-cultural experiences. Born in Somalia and raised in Kenya, she migrated to Denmark as a teenager and later to New York NY as a young adult. Now, with a home and studio in Upstate New York, Uman paints richly-hued worlds replete with gesture, geometry and the sublime. An intuitive artist, her influences abound from memories of East African childhood, a rigorous education in traditional calligraphy and a fascination with kaleidoscopic color and design. With nods to self-portraiture and fictional topographies, Uman's paintings speak fluently of liminal navigation. Her work contemplates both the physical and spiritual, intertwining abstraction, figuration, meditative patterning and a reverence for the natural world. Uman has had solo exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth, London, England; Nicola Vassell, New York NY; Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Athens, Greece; Fierman, New York NY; Anne De Villepoix, Paris, France; and White Columns, New York NY. She has been featured in group exhibitions at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, Canada; For-Site Foundation at Fort Mason Chapel, San Francisco CA; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, UK; Karma, New York NY; and Ramiken Crucible, New York NY. Loren Erdrich creates paintings that both aspire toward transcendence and revel in their physicality. Erdrich's deliberate and open collaboration with her medium allows for discovery in every painting, and she uses her materials in unconventional ways to create a dynamic tension between deliberate and unintentional gestures. She paints on raw muslin with water, dyes, pigments, and other water-based media, allowing the artist and her emerging figures to embrace and celebrate the strength of fluidity, vulnerability, and reactivity. Erdrich holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the Burren College of Art at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She has been awarded residencies at Yaddo, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, Jentel Foundation, Santa Fe Art Institute, Sculpture Space, Vermont Studio Center, and Art Farm Nebraska, and was selected as a Hopper Prize Finalist for 2023. Erdrich has exhibited in solo and group shows internationally in cities including New York City, Paris, Los Angeles, Madrid, Shanghai, Miami, Berlin, Denver, Copenhagen, Houston, Rome, London, and San Francisco. Her work has been featured in DNA Magazine Mexico, Maake Magazine, ArtMaze Mag, Chicago Tribune, Vogue Italia, Cultured Magazine, and WhiteHot Magazine, to name only a few. In 2021, Erdrich collaborated with fashion designer Marc Jacobs to incorporate her paintings into their Resort Collection. The artist lives and works in New York City, NY. Ep.179 features Basil Kincaid (b. 1986, St. Louis, Missouri) an American artist who honors and evolves traditional practices through quilting, collaging, photography, installation and performance. Implementing materials vested with emotional and memorial content, Kincaid allows these mediums to function as spiritual technology that forward various wisdoms born from Kincaid's greatest values: family, imagination, rest, and experience. Kincaid studied drawing and painting at Colorado College, graduating in 2010. Kincaid has exhibited works with Hauser & Wirth, Mindy Solomon, Kravets Wehby, Kavi Gupta, Carl Kostyal and others. In 2019, Kincaid debuted a first museum performance, “The Release,” at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis MO. In 2020 Kincaid received the Regional Arts Commission Fellowship. In 2021, Kincaid became a United States Artist Fellow and joined the Collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In 2022, Kincaid exhibited new quilt works in both the Legacy Russell-curated show, “The New Bend” at Hauser & Wirth's New York and Los Angeles locations, and the Ekow Eshun-curated exhibition, “New African Portraiture” at the Kunsthalle Krems in Austria. Kincaid also produced a ceremonial installation at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, wrapping a Manuel Neri figure in a quilt entitled “Take Me Home” just days after Neri's passing. Kincaid opened 2023 with “Dancing the Wind Walk”, a semi-permanent fabric monument during Frieze LA, with support from the Art Production Fund; before the end of the year, he will reveal a new quilt as part of “The Threads We Follow” at SECCA, North Carolina Museum of Art, and will have a solo exhibition, “Spirit in the Gift”, at the Rubell Museum, where he was the 2023 Artist in Residence. Basil Kincaid has been awarded the Great Rivers Biennial Prize and will have a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in Fall 2024. Ep 175~ The paintings of Calida Rawles (b. 1976, Wilmington, DE; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) merge hyper-realism with poetic abstraction. Situating her subjects in dynamic spaces, her recent work employs water as a vital, organic, multifaceted material, and historically charged space. Ranging from buoyant and ebullient to submerged and mysterious, Black bodies float in exquisitely rendered submarine landscapes of bubbles, ripples, refracted light and expanses of blue. For Rawles, water signifies both physical and spiritual healing as well as historical trauma and racial exclusion. She uses this complicated duality as a means to envision a new space for Black healing, and to reimagine her subjects beyond racialized tropes. Enhancing the seductive nature of water, the work tempers heavier subjects with aquatic serenity and geographic and temporal ambiguities, inviting multiple readings. Embedded in her titles and topographical notations in the compositions, Rawles' canvases represent an expansive vision of strength and tranquility during today's turbulent times, while insisting on the triumph of humanity. Rawles received a B.A. from Spelman College, Atlanta, GA (1998) and an M.A. from New York University, New York, NY (2000). Solo exhibitions of her work have been organized at Lehmann Maupin, New York, NY (2021); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, CA (2020); and Standard Vision, Los Angeles, CA (2020). Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions including Generation*. Jugend trotz(t) Krise, Kunsthalle Bremen, Bremen, Germany (2023); Rose in the Concrete, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (2023); 12th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (2022); Black American Portraits, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, CA (2021), Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Atlanta, GA (2023); A Shared Body, FSU Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, FL (2021); View From Here, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, CA (2020); Art Finds a Way, Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL (2020); Visions in Light, Windows on the Wallis, Beverly Hills, CA (2020); Presence, Fullerton College Art Gallery, Fullerton, CA (2019); With Liberty and Justice for Some, Walter Maciel Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2017); Sanctuary City: With Liberty and Justice for Some, San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco, CA (2017); LACMA Inglewood + Film Lab, Inglewood, CA (2014); and Living off Experience, Rush Arts Gallery, New York, NY (2002). Rawles created the cover art for Ta-Nehisi Coates's debut novel, “The Water Dancer,” and her work is in numerous public and private collections, including Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, CA; Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami, FL; Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Atlanta, GA; and Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY. It's another week of our illuminating For the Love of Being Seen and Heard series. We're talking to people that are doing the life-changing work of helping each other see and hear each other–to see and hear communities that we are not a part of, to see and hear voices that have been traditionally silenced or marginalized, or even to see and hear ourselves in honest and affirming ways. Our guest this week is a powerful advocate, but with a tender heart who works in so many spaces that matter: feminism, racial justice, the arts, activism, self care and healing. Rachel Cargle is a writer and entrepreneur who has created powerful online learning spaces. She's a regular contributor to Cultured Magazine, The Cut and Atmos. She's been featured in the New York Times and Forbes as well. Her work centers around an invitation to pursue healing and growth, as well as re-imagining how systems that no longer serve us can be dismantled or changed to embrace justice and liberation. Her belief is that every one of us has power–the power to unlearn, relearn and reimagine–taking ourselves out of stuck spaces and creating places for understanding for everyone. Her thoughts on feminism are so insightful as she looks at how a well intentioned movement for the progress of women leaves out key communities and how reimagining how to see and hear the needs of every woman toward better conditions for all women. This powerful discussion centers around: An explanation and brief history of the feminist movement and how communities of color often are left behind in this work How the culture, both inside and outside of black communities often stereotype black women as workers, as strong, as able to bear pain differently than their white counterparts; and Rachel's work to help black women feel cared for–which leads to an amazing ripple effect on families, organizations and communities The Loveland Foundation, which gives black women access to black therapists, to self-care and to other resources that are so often not readily or affordably available  Simple ways that women can get involved in the conversation to become clear about this intersection of feminism and race by hearing and telling truths, and to engage in knowledge, empathy, and action.  Sometimes the truth can be hard to process, but when there is intentionality in how we exist in our efforts toward benefitting the condition of women, the result is liberation for all women.  * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I believe that when black women are poured into,  it really offers a ripple effect to most other places in our communities and societies.” - Rachel Cargle "The systems are insistent on us not being curious. If we're not curious, they must stay the same. And if they stay the same the people who built them to win will continue winning." - Rachel Cargle "A lot of what I didn't yet know was what it meant to be a black woman in the feminist movement,  in spaces full of white women who were having a very different experience than I was, and who were benefiting from the outcomes of our collective work--more than the black women who were doing equal amounts of the work--and sometimes even more of the work in these spaces." - Rachel Cargle "Empathy that doesn't just say,  'I'm so sorry this happened to you.'" It's empathy that says, 'how do I play into you not having your needs met?' And often there's an answer to that--it's because of my  privileges and how those make me blind to what your needs are." - Rachel Cargle “There is a necessity for us to be critical and to ask questions, and to have this radical empathy that insists that there can be no way that anyone else will rise without all of us doing it at the same time.” - Rachel Cargle “Truth allows us to change something.” - Rachel Cargle “When you're vulnerable in America as a black woman, you could die. Your children could die. Your family could die. That's the truth. So there has to be this balance of the fight and the tending, the fight, and the nourishing because one or the other can either harden you or dissolve you.”  - Rachel Cargle “Art's role is to remind us of humanity because if it wasn't there, we would get caught up in the robotics of systems. It's there to remind us that we're humans as well.” - Rachel Cargle Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Photo of Rachel from the Women's March in 2017 per Huffington Post article “Feminism is White Supremacy In Heels” an article by Rachel Cargle in Harper's Bazaar Elizabeth Cady Staton Ida B. How might we honor and follow the authentic call of our purpose? This week, guest Rachel Cargle shares in a rich and enthralling conversation with Ayana that calls forth themes of rootedness, truth, and renaissance. Rachel honors a rootedness that comes from deep connection to ancestry, to Blackness, and to the earth, and she recognizes the way the earth and its cycles offer us examples of what presence and reciprocity look like. As Rachel points out in her forthcoming book A Renaissance of Our Own, we are in need of a renaissance. Attuned to years of intense work around race and racial consciousness within the United States, Rachel uses the dreams and desires from this time as the raw materials for revolution, Rachel envisions a collective renaissance that centers on intergenerational conversation. Rooted in trust, how might we reimagine this world together? Rachel Elizabeth Cargle is an activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropic innovator. She is the founder of The Loveland Group; a family of companies including Elizabeth's Bookshop & Writing Centre, a literary space that celebrates marginalized voices and The Great Unlearn, an adult learning platform that centers the teaching of BIPOC thinkers. In 2018, she founded The Loveland Foundation, offering free access to mental health care for Black women and girls. Cargle is a regular contributor to Cultured Magazine, Atmos, and The Cut, and her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Her new book, A Renaissance of Our Own: A Memoir and Manifesto on Reimagining, comes out in the U.S. May 16th, 2023.Join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewild for an extended version of this episode.Music by Eliza Edens and Mikayla McVey (generously provided by The Long Road Society Record Label). In the week leading up to joining the show I was blown away by Marcel and his team's attention to detail and pre planing. It dawned on me so many actors don't know what to expect after the offer email. We spend so much time focusing on getting the job we don't discuss the flood of emails / txts and planing that happens between booking and landing on set. Today Marcel and I discuss just that, how to share helping info with the hair & MUA department heads before arriving in their trailer along with so many more helpful tips. How Creativity Rules the World: The Art and Business of Turning Your Ideas into Gold by Maria Brito About the Book: Learn to make creativity work for your career. Maria Brito illustrates how creativity is merely a series of habits, actions, and attitudes that anyone can develop—regardless of who you are or what you do. There has never been a more crucial time than now to develop your creativity and your ability to innovate. Coming up with original ideas of value is today's most precious skill. Contrary to a myth that has been unfairly perpetuated, creativity can be taught and learned by anyone. How Creativity Rules the World builds the case for creativity as an inexhaustible resource available to everyone and proves that it is the key to thriving in the business world and beyond. With revealing studies and stories spanning business and art, How Creativity Rules The World is a deep dive into history, culture, psychology, science, and entrepreneurship; breaking down and analyzing the elements used by some of the most creative minds throughout the last 600 years. Maria Brito discovered the power of creativity when she transitioned from being an unhappy Harvard-trained corporate lawyer to a thriving entrepreneur and innovator in the art world. She flipped the barrenness around her to emerge as one of the most well-known disruptors in the art world. With this book, you will learn how to: Overcome limiting thoughts and dispel myths about creativity. Unleash creativity through concrete data, historical passages, and examples of modern entrepreneurship. Develop timeless habits, principles, and tools that worked six centuries ago and continue to work today. Employ creativity in an everyday context to produce extraordinary results. After applying the principles in How Creativity Rules the World to her own business, she started teaching them to hundreds of people, ranging from entrepreneurs to artists to CEOs. As evidenced by her students' creative successes, Maria knows that this timeless guide will allow others to strike gold with their ideas. How Creativity Rules the World promises to make the creative process of successful seven-figure artists and billion-dollar entrepreneurs—as well as Maria's own—accessible and actionable for you to take the power of their ideas to the next level. For several years, Maria has taught her creativity course in companies large and small and, in 2019, she launched “Jumpstart”, an online program on creativity for entrepreneurs based on years of research and observation in both the areas of business and art.    Margo and Maria discuss: Why she quit her lofty six-figure career as a lawyer to become an art advisor shortly after giving birth to her first child The importance of her work to enforce the idea that anyone can be creative (and other facts rooted in science) How our distractions nullify our creativity The advantages of being an outsider to an industry or field you want to be in How to actually allow and embrace change in your life How creativity is closely related to abundance and success Rewriting habits Finding middle ground, civil discourse, and the art of listening   Maria is a Harvard graduate, originally from Venezuela, her first monograph “Out There”, was the recipient of the Best Book Awards in both the Art and Design Categories. Maria was selected by Complex Magazine as one of the 20 Power Players in the Art World and she was named by ARTNEWS as one of the visionaries who gets to shape the art world. She has written for publications such as Entrepreneur, Huffington Post, Elle, Forbes, Artnet, Cultured Magazine, goop, Departures, and the Gulf Coast Journal of Literature and Fine Arts from the University of Houston, Texas.   Connect with Maria: http://www.mariabrito.com https://blog.mariabrito.com/ Jumpstart: Creativity for Entrepreneurs (Online Course) https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariabrito-ny/ https://www.instagram.com/mariabrito_ny/

SHOW NOTES Good Note: Quitting her attorney job to work in the arts. Getting a call from one of her friends with nothing but compliments that then linked her with a celebrity that opened huge doors for her. Even when you think no-one is watching, people are watching. The validation will come with the results. Bad Note: With the art industry being a Muti-billion dollar market, it is very small in terms of how everyone knows everyone. You need to protect your relationships. Stay within the rules of the community wether they are unspoken or not. The more you push yourself into a certain business the more mistakes will happen. Practice makes Progress: Never get complacent with anything, learn as much as you can. Every industry will continuously go through changes to always better the situation. Do your due diligence with any step that you take. Get informed. Getting Fans: Early adoption and original ideas. She noticed that art advisors didn't have social media branding and jumped at the opportunity. Concentrate in what you have by not over stretching yourself. You get fans by doing & sharing.
