Tonight, I will be welcoming Johnathan to the show. He had an encounter in Utah in 2020. Johnathan said "I was camping with my family and we kept hearing this bonking sound in the woods. I had no idea what it was. Long story short I ended up seeing what I thought was a guy in a ghillie suit but the suit looked strange, it was too thick. That is when I saw the muscles flex on this creature. I never really thought about Bigfoot before this moment."

What will it take for Americans to trust each other again? Long-time New York Times columnist Frank Bruni joins the podcast to talk about his days as a restaurant critic, his goals as an op-ed columnist, and the current state of civic discourse in America. “Based on which [cable news channel] you’ve gone to, you can have an understanding of events and reality that is almost diametrically opposed to somebody else’s. That makes it so much more challenging to find common ground,” observes Bruni. “It’s going to take a much more robust conversation than we’re having about where and how people get their information,” he says. Bruni talks about a health issue that made him more sensitive to the invisible struggles other people face. “If we all walked around wearing sandwich boards that told people what we were struggling with… I think we would be a lot kinder to one another,” he remarks. “It’s impossible to write an opinion column and not, in the passion you feel for your opinion, end up modeling something that feels different than civility. I always try to return to a plea for civility, decency and understanding,” he concludes. Join us for an insightful conversation with one of the sharpest observers of American culture and politics.

With the “energy, creativity and charisma not seen since Leonard Bernstein” and “vibrant,” “mind-blowing,” and “spectacular” conducting, Ming Luke is a versatile conductor that has excited audiences around the world. Highlights include conducting the Bolshoi Orchestra in Moscow, performances of Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella at the Kennedy Center, his English debut at Sadler’s Wells with Birmingham Royal, conducting Dvorak’s Requiem in Dvorak Hall in Prague, recording scores for a Coppola film, and over a hundred performances at the San Francisco War Memorial with San Francisco Ballet. The 20-21 season Luke conducts San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, and at Classical Tahoe with musicians of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He has been recognized nationally for his work with music education and has designed and conducted education concerts and programs with organizations such as the Berkeley Symphony, Houston Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, San Francisco Opera and others. Luke has soloed as a pianist with Pittsburgh Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, and San Francisco Ballet, and currently serves as Music Director for the Merced Symphony and Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra; Principal Conductor of the Nashville Ballet, Associate Conductor for the Berkeley Symphony; and Principal Guest Conductor for the San Francisco Ballet. Long time critic Allan Ulrich of the San Francisco Chronicle said, “Ming Luke delivered the best live theater performance I’ve ever heard of [Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet]” and in 2016 Luke’s War Requiem was named best choral performance of 2016 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Passionate about collaboration with dance companies and deepening the impact of movement to live music, Luke has guested with Boston Ballet, New York City Ballet Orchestra, Nashville Symphony/Ballet, San Diego Ballet and others and conducted l’Orchestre Prométhée in Paris as part of San Francisco Ballet’s residency with Les Etés de la Danse. Famed dancer Natalia Makarova stated, “Ming has a mixture of pure musicality and a sensitivity to needs of the dancers, which are such rare qualities.”The Question of the Week is, "How can classical musicians be effective collaborators with others?" Ming and I discuss his experience working with dancers as a conductor of ballet, what he believes is the key to being an effective collaborator, and his definition of a "successful classical musician." Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses three things we learned this weekend about the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that Buster Posey is back, and that that's a big deal. The Giants sorely missed Posey last year as Joey Bart, Chadwick Tromp, and Tyler Heineman struggled to produce. Posey is healthy, motivated, and could be in line for a resurgent season after working with the Giants' savvy new hitting coaches. The second thing we learned is that the Giants may have a problem at the backup shortstop position. Mauricio Dubón started at short in yesterday's first spring training game, and he looked extremely shaky. He let a ball go through his legs, and failed to get a single out on what should have been a double play grounder. Brandon Crawford will need some days off, so backup shortstop is going to be an area to watch moving forward. Finally, the third thing we learned is that Sam Long looks legit. Long is in camp as a non-roster invitee, and Gabe Kapler, Posey, and Joey Bart are among the prominent Giants who have raved about Long's bullpens so far. Long's stuff was on display on Sunday, and he looked awesome. The Giants have 20 non-roster pitchers in camp, so Long, Jimmie Sherfy, and others could be dark horses to make the Giants' opening day roster. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! A cop in Westchester, NY, was disturbed by what he saw as corruption. He started recording his colleagues -- and revealed how we’re all still living with the excess of the war on drugs. This conversation has been a LONG time in the making. If you know me at all, or you've been following me online or listening to this podcast for a while, then you'll know that NOFX are my favourite band of all-time. I'm not saying they're the best, but they are my personal favourite. They've had such a big impact in my life. I even talk about it in my new book, which is out NOW! ;)The new album by NOFX, entitled Single Album, is also out NOW. And it's their most personal, self reflective, introspective record to date. You might not think that's your bag - you may prefer the upbeat, jovial, political NOFX - but truth be told, no one in the punk scene does sad, dark, confessional compositions quite like Fat Mike. This album is awesome. And because it is a little on the sombre side, this conversation is a little earnest, and perhaps not what you would expect from Fat Mike. But that's exactly why I like it.I'm obviously going to be biased, but I think this is one of the most open, honest & vulnerable interviews Fat Mike has ever done. And as a lifelong uber fan of the band, it was a dream come true to have him on the show. I wish we could've talked for even longer than we did. But we covered a lot of ground in the time that we did have together. I hope you enjoy listening to it half as much as I enjoyed recording it.Be sure to tune in next week too, as I'll be joined by Mike's best friend and bandmate, Eric Melvin of NOFX.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones, Blackwell's & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Hey Everybody! Welcome to Episode #111 of The Troubadour. Long ago when I had the idea for this podcast, I knew we’d be interviewing lots of musical artists and songwriters.  But from the beginning I always had the desire to interview other people who make up a huge unseen chunk of this business.  Well, today along with you, Carly and I are going to get another interesting behind the scenes look at things through the eyes of one of the unsung heroes of touring musicians:  The Merch Man. Monty Peliti has slung cotton for some of the biggest names in Red Dirt and Texas Country Music including such notables as Jason Boland and The Stragglers as well as Casey Donahew.  I think of merch guys as some of the most important members of a traveling band even though they often get little to no notoriety. I think all of you would be surprised as to just how important T-shirt, ball cap, and in this day and age, vinyl record sales can be for a band needing gas money just to make it to the next gig. So, on today’s episode we’ll take a look at just what being a merch man means to a band and just how many other hats they often have to wear to keep a band on the road and making music. So, through the eyes of Monty Peliti, “merch man to the stars”, here comes episode #111 of The Troubadour! How YOU can support the podcast! As Black History Month ends and Women’s History Month begins, we wanted to honor a pioneer in the struggle for equal rights for both movements.Shirley Anita Chisholm was a politician, educator, activist, community organizer and author.Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1924, as a child during the Great Depression - while her parents struggled to make ends meet - young Shirley and her two sisters were sent to Barbados to live with their Grandmother. Long before the Civil Rights movement in the United States, youngShirley watched as her community advocated for their rights as she witnessed the Barbados workers' and anti-colonial independence movements. Chisholm would later say about her time on Barbados with her Grandmother: “Granny gave me strength, dignity, and love. I learned from an early age that I was somebody. I didn't need the Black Revolution to tell me that."In 1964, after nearly two decades as an educator and community activist, Chisholm ran for and was elected to the New York State Assembly.Even within the New York Democratic Party, Shirley Chisholm had faced resistance to candidacy based on her sex - so she took hercampaign directly to women, using her role as Brooklyn branch president of Key Women of America to mobilize female voters.Four years later - in 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. Her 1968 congressional campaign slogan was "Unbought and Unbossed" - which later became the title of her memoir and adocumentary film on her amazing life. On January 25, 1972, in a Baptist church in her district in Brooklyn - Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. In her presidential announcement - she called for a "bloodless revolution" at the forthcoming Democratic nominating convention and described herself as representative of the people offering a new articulation of American identity: "I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women's movement of this country, although I am a woman and equally proud of that. I am the candidate of the people and my presence before you, symbolizes a new era in American political history."Let’s listen to Civil Rights and Women’s Rights Pioneer Shirley Chisholm announce her candidacy for President of the United States. Welcome to episode 8 of “Quarantunes” Where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! In this first quarantunes episode of 2021, we get to experience musical expression from our artists at CECA. Listen in as we hear songs inspired by Brazil, the Summertime, and life! (0:18) “I Love You from Brazil” - CECA’s World Music Class The World music class chose to have the first country that they studied be Brazil.  Brazil is known for a diverse range of music, including Bossa Nova and Samba.  Students learned about elements from these styles of music and then incorporated those stylistic elements into a composition of their own.  They made choices about the tempo, key, pitch, rhythm and melody lines of the entire song.  Finally, the class chose different lyrics, settling on saying "I love you" in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French and Japanese.  The students also chose how they wanted the recordings of their voices to be manipulated or edited. Te Amo Aishiteru Je T'aime I love you (1:40) “Dreamy Rhapsody” - CECA’s Music Video Maker Class The song "Dreamy Rhapsody" is an original instrumental composition by the Music Video Makers class of Able ARTS Work. This was the students' final project of the semester. They created the song and music video by brainstorming various concepts about life and current times, then selected instrumentation and footage to match each concept. This song is intended to induce relaxation in the listener. On behalf of the Music Video Makers class, we hope you sit back, relax and enjoy "Dreamy Rhapsody". You can find a video featuring this song by using the link below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7bsX5sJ7PI (6:33) “Feelin’ the Sushine” (The Friendship/Summertime Song) is a song that was written collectively by students in To Instruments and Far Beyond! class at Cultural Education Center for the Arts (CECA). Students first voted on writing a song with the theme of “friendship” and “summertime”. They then progressively voted on song tempo, instrumentation, lyrics, song form/structure, and other musical and stylistic elements. Some of the students singing voices and musical instruments were recorded live during virtual classes and embedded into the final recording of the song. A guest instructor and employee of Able Arts Work also recorded their melodica instrument during a visit to class. The title “Feelin’ the Sunshine” was decided upon after the completion of the music and lyrics and is based on a lyrical phrase in the song, “I wanna feel the sunshine”. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.I. PRINCIPLES OF CRIME & PUNISHMENTPrinciple 1: God is a God of JusticeUltimately all crimes against God (Psalms 51:4). What does the Bible say about crimes against man (person/ property)?Proverbs 24:25, Ecclesiastes 8:11, Ecclesiastes 5:8-9.Lex talionis: Limitation: a maximum, not a minimum. See Exodus 21:24, Matthew 5:38.“Let the punishment fit the crime” – Gilbert & Sullivan, The Mikado (1885).Principle 2: There will be a Judgment Day, and it will be FairThere will be an ultimate judgment – and it will be fair (Genesis 18:25; Luke 12:47-48; Romans 2:5, 14:10; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Hebrew 9:27; 2 Peter 3:7; 1 John 4:17, etc).Yet there may be a delay.Habakkuk wondered…Numbers 32:23.1 Timothy 5:24.Principle 3: Moral Authority must Speak Truth to Power or No One is Above the LawThe prophets spoke out against social injustice:  Elijah, Amos, John the Baptist, and many others…Jesus challenged leaders of his day. Reminded high priest, governor, and other authorities about some important spiritual principles...There are times when believers must speak up -- speak out!Principle 4: Law is GoodMuch of modern law comes from the Romans.Even more may come from the Jews: property law, torts, worker’s compensation, litigation, etc (Exod 20-Deut 33).Even studying OT law shows us God’s wisdom, providence and justice. Even though it is not the law of God for us, it is still the word of God for us, and we have much to learn!Principle 5:  Civil Disobedience is Occasionally JustifiedHenry David ThoreauDaniel 3:18, 6:10 – obey government except when contradicts law of GodOn the other hand, we should pay taxes, even if they’re unfair -- we disagree with how the government chooses how to spend them. Give to those who ask you (Matthew 5:42). Insistence on “rights”?Principle 6: The State has the Right to Punish InfractionsFines, traffic tickets, etcImprisonmentExecution: Romans 13.II. THOUGHTS ON INCARCERATIONAncient times:Temporary, awaiting trial.Long-term – more likely for king’s prisoners. Or those rulers did not want to make martyrs of.Paul (Acts 24, 28) and Joseph (Genesis 39+) are unusual in the length of their incarcerations.Prisoners were visited by friends or relatives -- fed, clothed, care for by them. The state did little (see Jeremiah 37-38).Does our system of incarceration work? “Correctional,” or “penitentiary”? Or just a punishment? It works poorly, though in some nations the penal system is more effective than in others. Two extremes: soft and hard; focus on prisoners' rights vs. focus on society's rightsReformation of character? Not usually. Rather, recidivism!US – 5% of world population and 25% of world’s prisoners. China – less glorious human rights record – far fewer incarcerated!Prison ministry? In NT times, prisoners would normally have been believers (Hebrews 13).And yet prisons present a great evangelistic opportunity. Implication of Philippians 1:7,12-14; 4:22).

Bragg, Adidas America, and the Mayo Clinic.  Calin and Jeremy are working together now on concepts related to long term development of ski and snowboard athletes. So often, we have our “standard plyometric battery” in performance training, but we cling to these fundamentals hard when we would be served well to be observing jump training and movement in a variety of mediums to create ideas for our plyometric progression.  Studying athletes in sports that demand fast reactions, impactful landings, high risk, and rewards for creativity have a lot to offer when it comes to looking at our own training designs for the athletes we serve. Together, Jeremy and Calin will talk about their collaboration together with skiing, the use and progression of games with young athletes up to college level, plyometric progressions and advancing complexity, and how the natural warmup process in ski and snowboard (terrain park) can give us ideas that we can port over into how we can prepare athletes for sport.  There is a lot of great information in this podcast that can be useful for sport coaches, strength coaches and skiiers alike. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster. View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage. I think the mental side is completely unique.” “What we try to do… is really just force environments that get them to explore their bodies, their joints, how to maneuver around certain objects or other people, and really just try to get the out of their comfort zone and using games, it’s a lot more fun for them.” “We so underestimate the difference between a child and an adult and keeping people in flow states. I just think that’s such a mistake that’s proliferated.”

Ifeyinwa (Ify) Osunkwo, MD, MPH, joins us to talk about her approach to pain management in patients suffering from sickle cell crisis as well as the cognitive and behavioral effects of long-term opioid use in these patients. She and our host David H. Henry, MD, cover these topics and more in this episode. Dr. Osunkwo is a professor of medicine at Atrium Health and the director of the Sickle Cell Enterprise at the Levine Cancer Institute, part of Atrium Health, in Charlotte, N.C. Over the course of a decade, the life expectancy of patients with sickle cell disease has increased. Today 99% of children with sickle cell disease will live to become adults. When treating patients with sickle cell pain it is important to consider their disease trajectory, and to weigh the pros and cons for initiation of opioid therapy. Management of sickle cell disease in the acute setting: In children, therapy usually includes use of intravenous fluid and intravenous opioids, then an eventual transition to oral opioids and NSAIDS. In adolescents, exposure to a prolonged course of high-dose opioids actually has been shown to exacerbate their pain. PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) versus “PRN” or as-needed medications removes the dependency on the external environment to receive pain medications and lessens the degree of psychological stress in these patients. Use of intravenous ketamine as an adjuvant to opioids in patients with an acute exacerbation has been shown to improve outcomes in patients (i.e., better pain control, decreased hospital stay, and management of anxiety and stress of a pain crisis.) In the acute pain setting, it is important to go through all differentials to get to where you are treating the right cause of pain. Following hospitalization, these patients often present back to the hospital in subacute opioid withdrawal. The key here is to engage patients in long term treatment plans. For opioid-induced itching, it has been shown that in patients who receive intravenous Benadryl have worse outcomes than in patients that receive oral Benadryl. Long-term side effects of chronic opioid therapy use: Psychological and behavioral side effects including insomnia, reduced libido, tolerance, oppositional behavior, poor memory, psychosis, paranoia, increased depression/anxiety and confusion. The opioid risk score is a helpful screening test that looks at the risk of adverse opioid outcomes. Specifically, family history of substance abuse, personal history of substance abuse, history of person abuse or psychological diagnosis results in a higher score which correlates with a higher risk of negative outcomes. Use of suboxone has proved to be very beneficial in patients on chronic opioid therapy in preventing frequent hospitalizations. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    We’re talking about trick training for dogs; it’s fun and easy! Can you remember the very first thing you trained a dog to do and how you went about training it? The first thing I trained a dog to do was to dance. It was when I was a kid with our family dog, Tina the Poodle. Training tricks with our dogs is something I consider important, and there are three favourite tricks that I think all dogs should learn.   In the episode you'll hear:   • About our feelings when we are training tricks. • What I noticed about my Border Collie, Stoni, in the Obedience Ring. • Why everything can be a trick to bring joy to us and our dogs. • My progression as a dog trainer and transitioning to shaping behaviors. • How trick training provides a model for clarity for our dogs. • Why trick training teaches our dogs never to give up. • About the elements of strength, flexibility and proprioception when choosing tricks. • How to train your dog to hand target. • About the ways to shape your dog to pivot on a perch. • The steps for training your dog to wave.   Resources:   • Recallers - https://recallers.com/ • Home School the Dog- https://dogsthat.com/home-school/ • Video: Target Training for Dogs Part One - All About Targets - https://youtu.be/MzePo7RSQu4 • Video: Target Training for Dogs Part Two - Step by Step Training Plan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqsEEWCXze0 • Podcast Episode 62: 12 Keys to Helping My Dogs Live a Long and Happy Life - https://dogsthat.com/podcast/62/ • Game: Learn How to Play ItsYerChoice (IYC) - https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join/ • Crate Games Online - https://get.crategames.com/ • Podcast Episode 59: Why Your Treats Aren’t Working for Your Dog - https://dogsthat.com/podcast/59/ • Podcast Episode 22: The Invisible Bubble of Pressure and Your Dog - https://dogsthat.com/podcast/22/ • Watch this Episode of Shaped by Dog on YouTube - https://youtu.be/UUrzaXmFO2g
