"That's what ‘repertoires' is trying to force philosophers to look at - that whole ecosystem that encompasses the doing of science." Prof. Rachel Ankeny We start season 2 with the wonderful Rachel Ankeny discussing scientific change and the concept of research repertoires.Rachel is professor of History and Philosophy at the University of Adelaide, with wide ranging expertise across HPS, bioethics and science policy, as well as food studies. Rachel is also editor in chief of the journal Studies in History and Philosophy of Science and is past president of the International Society for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology. In this episode Rachel introduces us to the concept of 'Research Repertoires', a notion she develop with Sabina Leonelli as a way to better understand the complex composition of research communities. In particular, Rachel and Sabina introduce the notion of  repertoires to highlight how important the practice of science is to understanding how scientific knowledge making works and changes over time. The repertoire of a scientific community incorporates many different components, including the typical skills, methods, materials and technologies that community members use, the institutional structures they practice in, the geographical locations they are dispersed across, the common language they share, the organizations they subscribe to, and the ways in which they typically publish. Some links related to this episode can be found below:Profile: Professor Rachel Ankeny | Researcher Profiles (adelaide.edu.au)Research Repertoires: Repertoires: A post-Kuhnian perspective on scientific change and collaborative research (Ankeny & Leonelli, 2016)Repertoires and Model Organisms (Sect 5): Model Organisms (cambridge.org)Repertoires in Jazz:  The Jazz Repertoire (Faulkner & Becker 2006)Kuhn's Concept of Paradigm: Stanford Encyclopedia of PhilosophyA transcript of this episode can be found here: www.hpsunimelb.org/post/transcript-s2-e1Thanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. In this episode, I talk with Lucy Leonelli about her book, A Year in the Life. Feeling stuck in her career and suffering from a very bad case of FOMO, Lucy quit her 9-5 and spent one year living with 26 different British subcultures: aristocrats, battle re-enactors, circus performers, naturists, zeitgeist political activists and more, experiencing first-hand their social rituals and customs, leading to lessons about herself, the world and what it means to be human. But wait, there's more! Lucy also flips the scripts and asks ME questions like she did these subcultures… starting with the question: is feminism a subculture? Some topics of discussion include: What led to this year-long adventure and if Lucy cured her FOMO The importance - and flexibility - of one's identity When values and identity turn into prejudices and tribalism The common thread that runs through us all: human connection, community Plus: Is feminism is a subculture?

Upon returning to Wilton & Bain, her professional motivations were never the same. She references Frodo’s return to the Shire in Lord of the Rings, where Bilbo tells him, “You can never go home again.” As fate would have it, Lucy’s business partners reached out to her with plans for expansion into the U.S., leading her down a new path in Silicon valley.Listen in as Lucy discusses her transition to the U.S., the differences in doing business between the two countries, best practices for building your network and nurturing business relationships, why you need to start making more phone calls today, how to evolve from recruiter to trusted advisor, and how a traumatic motorcycle accident completely changed Lucy’s trajectory in life. From expanding her network, to getting through the right doors, to understanding and strategizing around competitors, Lucy goes over the various challenges she had to overcome to get to where she is today. What You’ll Learn in This Episode:● [2:37] Leaving Wilton & Bain and moving to the U.S.● [5:27] Lucy on living with vampires● [7:28] Lucy’s first few months doing business in the U.S.● [8:30] What Wilson & Bain offers● [11:48] How doing business in the U.S. is different from the U.K.● [14:51] Immediate challenges in getting the business off the ground● [17:24] Building relationships in the U.S. fresh off the boat● [19:35] Other networking activities● [22:33] The biggest misconception clients have about the search industry● [26:58] When Lucy knew that the business was finally getting off the ground● [31:09] A case for making more phone calls today● [32:00] Sending LinkedIn messages that get responses● [36:48] The power of getting introductions● [37:56] Interacting with British aristocracy● [39:27] Lucy on her motorcycle accident● [45:16] Creating your own happiness● [46:24] What Lucy is excited for in her new role at Twilio● [47:44] Lucy’s parting words of wisdomKey quotes:● “In Silicon Valley, people are very open to meeting up with you over coffee to have a conversation. The challenge is closing business. In the U.K., it’s the other way around.”● “Automation can find the specific collection of experiences and companies that you’re looking for. But how you find that personality profile and level of experience that’s going to fit into your organization requires a high-touch, human element. You can’t replace that with an algorithm.”● “A real shortcut to success in a search is getting introductions from your connections.”● “We always think it’s the external things that make us happy, so we always put happiness off. Really, happiness is something that’s absolutely within your control. Always focus on celebrating the wins and don’t dwell on the failures.”● “Make a plan and move in that direction, but don’t be surprised when curveballs hit you, because I think we have a lot more of those to come in 2021.”

In April 1988 Harvard University was awarded a patent that was the first of its kind. U.S. Patent Number 4,736,866 was small, white, and furry, with red beady eyes. His name was OncoMouse. The mouse, genetically engineered to have a predisposition for cancer, allowed researchers to study the disease in an intact living organism. It promised to transform cancer research, but not everyone was happy. Most critics were wary of patenting life forms at all. But academic scientists were also worried about the collision of commercial and academic science. It forced them to face difficult questions: Who should pay for science? Who does scientific knowledge belong to? And should science be for the good of the public or for profit? Credits Hosts: Alexis Pedrick and Elisabeth Berry Drago. Commentators have been forecasting the eclipse of hypothesis-driven science and the rise of a new ‘data-driven' science for some time now. Harkening back to the aspirations of Enlightenment empiricists, who sought to establish for the collection of sense data what astronomers had done for the movements of heavenly bodies, they appeal to a general consensus that the acceleration of data collection through computing technologies requires a parallel shift toward computational thinking. This raises the question, however, of how computational practices have changed over the last few decades. Sabina Leonelli's Data-Centric Biology: A Philosophical Study (U of Chicago Press, 2016) is the first book-length treatment of how large-scale data collection impacts the work of the life sciences. The book offers a historically and socially informed epistemology of data, situating its production, consumption, and regulation within laboratory practices. In fact, while much work in the history and sociology of biotechnology has attended to the kind of scalar changes associated with visible endeavors like the Human Genome Project, Leonelli's account bucks this trend by looking at how plant biologists have made use of new tools and adopted different norms of sharing. The political economy of data she describes is biopolitical in a more pervasive sense, and the book offers support for the Open Science movement while subjecting it to keen philosophical scrutiny. How to Grow Your Business with a Field Team with Nadia Leonelli

Have you considered hiring a field team to promote your brand? Our guest for today's show, Nadia Leonelli of Element Snacks, says it's not just for the big companies. In fact she has used the field team strategy in the early stages of her business to get her products into stores nationwide. Nadia has created healthy yet yummy and satisfying snack options with Element Snacks. Born out of necessity, Nadia and her husband have worked tirelessly knocking on doors, visiting retailers and pounding the pavement to get the word. They've also tapped into a marketing strategy that has paid dividends for them: a field team. Their field members also work hard to get the Element Snacks products into the hands of as many customers as possible. On this episode of Launch Grow Joy Nadia shares how and why to use a field team effectively, her early business challenge of isolation and the three ways she tackled that problem and simultaneously grew her business. In this episode, you'll also hear about: When should you work with an accelerator or incubator? What grassroots approach did she and her husband use to spread brand awareness? Why people want to see you, the person behind your brand. What's the cheapest way to get your product into people's hands? Why do you need to meet your customers and clients in person at events? And so much more! Nadia created Element Snacks because she's gluten-free and was traveling a great deal. Regularly she was faced with the dilemma of what to bring on her flights to eat. Rice cakes were convenient and easy to carry, but dry and boring. Putting her entrepreneur's cap on she developed Element Snacks: gluten-free, GMO-free, sweet, delicious AND healthy snacks. Once the product was created she was faced with another challenge: how to become known and connected in an industry she had never worked in. Previously Nadia was a corporate strategy consultant who helped big brands with global launches and product strategies. She found three effective ways to become immersed in the community: live events like trade shows, networking with other women-owned businesses, and becoming a part of an accelerator. With that challenge faced and conquered she faced another one: how best to spread the word to retailers and potential customers about Element Snacks? After all no one could buy her product if they didn't know about it! So she enlisted her own army: a field team. She educated them, trained them and continues to treat them like part of the family. Nadia and her husband both know what it's like to cold call on retailers and they help their field team do so effectively, while also continuing to do it themselves! The field team strategy is a powerful one that has worked well for Nadia and Element Snacks. Tune into this episode of Launch Grow Joy to hear what else has worked for Nadia.
