Kate Adie introduces BBC correspondents' reports from Sudan, Spain, Tunisia, Italy and Mexico. Sudan's newest civil war has been raging for more than three months - but first-hand images and reports of conflict are not easy to find. Barbara Plett Usher has been working to cover the violence from Nairobi, in Kenya, and reflects on what it's been possible to confirm. In this weekend's snap general election in Spain, current Socialist PM Pedro Sanchez tests his mandate against growing pressure from the right - not just the traditional conservatives of the Partido Popular, but also a range of more firmly nationalist parties. Each major blocs has questioned the other's alliances - whether with smaller parties from the far right, or others from the Basque-nationalist movement. Guy Hedgecoe reports from Madrid. Tunisia may have been the birthplace of the so-called Arab Spring, but these days its democratic credentials seem corroded. President Kais Saied is on an increasingly authoritarian tear, the economy's sputtering and the country's treatment of sub-Saharan African migrants has been growing ever harsher. And as Mike Thomson experienced on a recent trip, the media are still under VERY close supervision. Much of Southern Europe is baking - if not burning - in a searing heatwave. Sofia Bettiza saw how people are adapting to the soaring temperatures on the streets of Palermo, in Sicily - and heard about concerns for Italians' health in this heat. And from Mexico City, an unexpected casualty of gentrification. The BBC's Central America correspondent Will Grant has been trying to keep ahead of a wave of affluent foreigners - especially US citizens - moving in, but recently his young daughters' nursery has been priced out of the neighbourhood.
Tunisia's democracy is being dismantled by a president who claims he's saving it from anarchy. Parliament has been dissolved, scores of judges sacked and opponents jailed. Once Tunisia - the north African country of just 12 million people squeezed between it's much bigger neighbours Libya and Algeria - was a beacon of democracy. It was the first Arab country to overthrow it's dictator Ben Ali in 2011 during what became known as the Arab Spring. Now a new authoritarian leader, Kais Saied, dominates the country. Tunisia faces numerous problems, from soaring prices and shortages of some basic foods - to thousands of migrants – many Tunisians - trying to flee across the Mediterranean to Europe. Mike Thomson meets the sister of an activist who was imprisoned, an aspiring kickboxer who wants to settle abroad, a sub-Saharan migrant who's lost his job and his home and a rapper, whose music helped inspire that 2011 revolution. What future faces Tunisia – democracy or dictatorship? When hiring new employees, most companies go with the tried and true method of posting job openings online and waiting for applicants to apply. This approach has worked well for years because it's cheap and fast. But it also means that many qualified candidates miss out on jobs. In order to humanize the recruitment and hiring process, you must first understand why people join organizations. Once you do, you can create a culture where everyone feels valued and appreciated. It makes the recruitment and interviewing process less stressful and more fun for both parties. I invited Mike Thomson to be a guest on Mind The Innovation Leadership Podcast to discuss how to humanize the recruiting and hiring process. Key takeaways: Employees are actually productive when they're working from their homes and companies can still succeed by offering remote workers flexible schedules. Building a business network is a great way to meet like-minded people who may be able to help you achieve success. By connecting with these people, you can gain access to resources, advice, and support that you wouldn't otherwise have. Additionally, having a network of contacts can open doors to new opportunities. The two most important elements that are missing from a job description are how you work and who you're working with. Candidates are demanding more transparency and authenticity from employers. The job landscape is changing. Candidates want more transparency and authenticity from their employers. Candidates are now more open than ever before to disclosing their personal information. This includes things like LinkedIn accounts, online portfolios, and previous job experience. Candidates want to understand what you're looking for from them, why you're interviewing them, and how well they fit into your team. Use this information to ensure you choose an employee who truly fits into your company. Humanizing a Remote Workplace: 3 Ways to Do It Managing remote teams is difficult enough without dealing with a lack of human interaction. However, it doesn't have to stay that way. There are three ways managers can help their employees feel like they're part of a bigger team. 1. Be there for them. You don't need to be physically present to meet people; however, you do need to be physically present if you want to connect with them. You can still use videoconferencing tools such as zoom and skype to keep everyone in sync. Even if you're not physically present at the meeting, you can still communicate with your team using Slack, email, text messaging, etc. 2. Provide feedback. Managers who provide feedback to their employees are able to build trust among their teams. Praise people for doing things well. If someone needs assistance, offer guidance. Don't just sit there waiting for things to go wrong; instead, take proactive measures to avoid them happening in the first place. 3. Make sure everyone feels included. To create a strong, cohesive team you need to ensure that everyone feels valued. Both genders include both males and females. When you talk about your team, be sure to recognize each member individually. Thank them for their hard work. Connecting for Culture and Humanity It seems like every day there's a new story about how technological advances are changing our lives. Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and automation are becoming increasingly important topics in our society today. As per McKinsey & Co., nearly half of all current jobs could be automated by 2030, which means that there would be plenty of new opportunities for people who want to get into tech. While many people worry about the negative effects of technological progress, there is one area in which technology has improved human lives—and that's at work. As companies seek ways to improve employee satisfaction and retain employees, they're looking at virtual workplaces to help foster feelings of belonging and connection. Virtual workplaces offer a variety of benefits, including increased efficiency, improved employee satisfaction, and better customer service. They also let companies grow fast without having to spend lots of money on building new physical infrastructure. Because they don't require large upfront investments, these strategies can be put into place relatively easily. Why don't more organizations adopt virtual workspaces? There are several reasons why people don't use bots for their business, including concerns about security and privacy. However, these problems are being addressed, and if you approach virtual working correctly then the potential advantages greatly outweigh the risks. What Does It Take To Reframe Work Culture? Redefining "culture" is about redefining the way we see our jobs and the way that we approach our career paths. We often think of our jobs as something that has to be endured until we retire, rather than something we actually enjoy doing. We can reframe our job culture by changing the way we think about our jobs and ourselves at the office. Instead of viewing our jobs as drudgeries, we see them as opportunities for personal development and improvement. We stop feeling guilty for not working and instead enjoy the benefits of having a career that provides us with financial stability. Instead of constantly looking at our lives through the lens of comparison, we learn to appreciate the things we already have instead. We focus less on the bad things we're doing at work and instead celebrate the good things we're doing. We stop seeing our jobs as a burden and instead see them as a source of fulfillment. If you want to hire someone new, making sure that you hire the right person for the position will be easier if you take some time to humanize the hiring process. Understanding their strengths and weakness, personality traits, and career ambitions will help you know where to look when you hire them. Once you've found the right person for the job, you'll also know why they want to work for you. Welcome to Episode #70My guest Mike ThomsonMike is an entrepreneur, matchmaker, sales professional, storyteller, father, and athlete with a natural curiosity about people. He has been in the recruitment agency industry for thirteen years and launched SPARK at the end of 2021 to change how top talent can be attracted. He came to BEHAS to explain how he is on a mission to change the way organizations hire. Let's imagine if companies still marketed products or services exclusively using flyers and coupons through the mail. That's how companies recruit with job descriptions that have not changed their style in decades. Interesting concept? Many of us have been thinking this way for a while, and I am glad Mike is here to share the mission. Let's enjoy! Connect with Mike: www.sparkrecruiting.ca
Chances are, you're hiring. And it's not hard to find candidates. LinkedIn is a worldwide network of professionals, many of whom are #opentowork. You can post your job on Indeed or Zip Recruiter and have a dozen applicants in minutes. But are they the right candidates? We talk a lot about relationships on this podcast. While the digital age should make connecting easier, our online platforms are so clogged with candidates that when it comes to staffing, we really haven't made much progress. Many companies are still advertising the job to the largest possible audience, desperate to find that “rockstar” candidate who jives with their team and sparkles them with potential. But candidates are more than their online profiles. And finding more candidates doesn't necessarily mean that you're finding the right ones. In this episode, we hear from Mike Thomson of Spark Recruiting. Mike knows that when we treat hiring like a dig for hidden treasure, we miss out on diverse, teachable, adaptable candidates who may really turn out to be our rockstar team members. That's why Spark Recruiting developed a new method. They amplify your company's story, market the job you're hiring for, and put the hiring manager at the center of the job search – so that you can find the candidate that truly fits. Inclusivity in the workplace can act as a real stimulant and incentive to increase workplace diversification and providing organizations with a true competitive advantage. According to the Government of Canada, we still have plenty of work to do, when it comes to the full integration and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce. According to the government's recent study between 36-59% of individuals with disabilities are unemployed. Compared to 68 to 79% of individuals without a disability who are employed. Mike Thomson is a Partner | Recruiter for Spark Recruiting. He's on a mission to change the way organizations hire! “When I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey at the end of 2021 it was driven by a desire to level the playing field for all employers and employees. Far too often in my thirteen years in the recruitment industry I heard empty statements made by organizations that claim their people are their biggest asset only to see those same organizations dedicate far more resources to the acquisition of new customers as opposed to the attraction of top talent. Can you imagine if how we marketed products or services was still exclusively with flyers and coupons in the mail? Yeah....that's recruiting, as most still think job descriptions are awesome! Not us though, Spark is aimed at fixing this problem.. we operate at the intersection of marketing and recruiting with the foundational philosophy that it is more important WHO you are working for then the company you are working at. The future of recruiting is in content, and if I am only competing with job descriptions and generic "here we grow again" claims. I like our chances.” He joined me this week, to tell me more. Syrian born reporter Lina Sinjab presents a special series from Assignment’s award winning archive on the 10 years of civil war in her country. This week an extraordinary story from 2016, reported by Mike Thomson, about a secret library stored in the basement of a crumbling house in the besieged Syrian town of Darayya. The library was home to thousands of books rescued from bombed-out buildings by local volunteers, who daily braved snipers and shells to fill its shelves. In the town gripped by hunger and death after three years without food aid, Mike Thomson revealed how this literary sanctuary proved a lifeline to a community shattered by war. And now, 10 years on, Mike brings Lina up to date on the fate of some of those volunteers. Produced by Michael Gallagher and additional research and translation by Mariam El Khalaf. Podcast: From Our Own Correspondent Podcast (LS 59 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: The true state of the pandemic in TurkeyPub date: 2020-12-19Turkey has had record numbers of new coronavirus infections recently with around 30,000 positive cases a day. That number has now dropped slightly, and the Health Ministry says restrictions have begun to bear fruit. But how did it get to this, in a country which was initially regarded as doing well in the pandemic? Now the government has been accused of covering up the spread of the virus, and putting lives at risk, as Orla Guerin reports from Istanbul. In Sudan's western region of Darfur, the long-running armed conflict has cost 300,000 lives, and forced two and a half million people to flee their homes. After a peace deal in August, the international peacekeeping force is preparing to pull out this month. Hopes now rest on the new part-civilian, part-military government, which came to power after 30 years of dictatorial rule. But as Mike Thomson found, the dual structure of the new administration can pose challenges on the ground. People in Bethlehem are preparing for an austere Christmas without the income from foreign pilgrims and tourists – but you can still find stories of hope there. Especially at the Milk Grotto – near the Nativity Church – where the Virgin Mary is said to have nursed baby Jesus. It's long been claimed that women who have difficulties conceiving are blessed with children after praying at the grotto, or using bits of soft chalk, or “milk powder”, from its walls, as Yolande Knell reports. New York City was hit worse than many places during the first wave of the pandemic, and Nick Bryant and his wife both caught the virus. So his adopted home is the perfect perch from which to observe, and now reflect on, the extraordinary year that was 2020. After 17 years of conflict costing 300,000 lives, a peace agreement offers new hope to Sudan’s troubled Darfur region. It comes as UNAMID, the United Nations and African Union peacekeeping force, prepares to finally pull out at the end of December. For Assignment, Mike Thomson gains rare access to Darfur to hear the stories of those still living with deep uncertainty. Several European countries are imposing strict pre-Christmas lockdowns to try and control the COVID-19 pandemic. We hear from Dresden, and talk to a German epidemiologist and the former health minister of the Czech Republic. Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/2GJQVXE The secret library is in the basement of a bombed building in a heavily shelled area of Darayya. Around it, shattered buildings that were once homes and offices lie in crumbling, treacherous piles. A desert of shattered grey concrete festooned with twisted metal and charred wires. Deep beneath this scene of frightening devastation lies the secret library. No signs mark its presence. Locals fear that Syrian government planes will bomb it if they know where it is. While the streets above echo with rifle fire and thunderous shelling the secret world below is a haven of peace and tranquillity. More than 14,000 books are stacked neatly on home-made shelves according to author and subject, and are checked in and out meticulously. Those within read quietly, drinking tea on comfortable sofas and chairs. A small oasis of normality in a country at war with itself. The secret library was the brainchild of a group of former university students whose education was interrupted when war broke out and then was ended altogether by the siege that followed. Teams of young enthusiasts regularly dodge snipers' bullets and barrel bombs to bring the books to the library. Timber for the bookshelves is collected in a similar way. Darayya's secret library is an extraordinary place, but this book is about more than that. It is also the stories of the many people who treasure it and the central role it has in their lives. Sudan’s doctors on the frontline. When ongoing street protests finally pushed Sudan’s repressive president from power last month, it was the country’s doctors many thanked. Ever since Omar al-Bashir’s successful coup in 1989 they had defied him. Staging strikes, organising demonstrations, and campaigning for human rights, the country’s white-coated men and women opposed all he stood for. In the last few months alone scores of them were jailed, beaten, tortured and some deliberately gunned down. Through the eyes of a murdered medic’s family, Mike Thomson looks at the extraordinary role these unlikely revolutionaries have played in Sudan’s uprising. The Order of the Solar Temple was a secret society that would go down sharing the pages of history with Jonestown, the Branch Davidians and Heaven’s Gate. But is it fair to compare the groups? When it comes to incidents of mass violence and cults, perhaps it may be unavoidable. Because whether they ended in mass murder-suicide or a different form of violence, in spite of the striking ideological differences between them, there were some similarities – in all of these groups that ended with such undeniable tragedy.Full research sources listed on each episode page at www.ltaspod.com.If you have been personally affected by involvement in a cult, or would like to support those who have been, you can find support or donate to Cult Information and Family Support if you’re in Australia (via www.cifs.org.au), and you can find resources outside of Australia with the International Cultic Studies Association (via www.icsahome.com).If you or someone you know is in crisis or needs support right now, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 in Australia, or find your local crisis centre via the International Association for Suicide Prevention website at www.iasp.info.Links: Violence and New Religious Movements — by James R. One of the things we RVers invariably ask ourselves at some point is, "How long will I be able to keep on doing this?" Well this week, in our interview of the week, we're going to hear from an RVer who says, "As long as you're moving, you're never too old." Plus, a report on 5G, the blazingly fast new mobile Internet network launching this week and what it means to RVers. Plus lots of your questions, RV News and tips and another wonderful off the beaten path report from the Burketts. Show Notes for Episode #Oct. 3, 2018 The RV Podcast: WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK MIKE Can you believe it’s October already! JENNIFER One of my favorite times of the year for the RV Lifestyle. I love fall camping! MIKE We’re headed to California this week and the 66th annual California RV Show at the LA Fairplex in Pomona. Although Hershey calls it’s September show the World’s Largest RV Show and Tampa’s RV Supershow in Florida every January says it is bigger yet, there are many who think the California show is really the biggest. Big it is, too. The show covers over one million square feet of displays and includes a large exhibitor tent featuring countless accessories and aftermarket products to personalize RVs, plus 40 informative seminars on a variety of RV-related subjects. JENNIFER There’s lots of convenient parking and easy access to the show is assured with three entrance gates. There will also be three food courts for hungry show goers, and entertainment for everyone from free Ferris wheel rides, meet and greet celebrities, music and an amazing archer. The show runs from Oct. 5 through 14, 2018 at the Fairplex in Pomona, Gate 9. Show hours are 10AM until 6PM daily. There are supposed to be 1,300 new 2019 models on display and a bunch more 2018s and earlier, so just in terms of space and the sheer number of RVs on site, this show promises to be every bit as big as Hershey, if not more. MIKE We will be doing meet and greets both Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend, October 6th and 7th. You can find us at the Roadtrek Display and the Mike Thomson dealership space there. For those of you in different parts of the country, we will be doing our regular Sunday night Ask Us Anything YouTube live broadcast from the California RV Show at 4PM Pacific, 7PM Eastern this Sunday night. JENNIFER We are really looking forward to attending this show and meeting folks. Adult admission to the show is $15; kids 17 and under are free. There’s lots of RV Parking available. You can save $2 by purchasing tickets online at californiarvshow.org This promises to be a lot of fun, we’ve wanted to get out to California for this show for years. MIKE Something else we are really excited about is the publication of our book, “A Beginner’s Guide to Boondocking.” We thank you for all those early buyers who have been sending us such kind reviews but it really was a labor of love. We’re asked all the time how do I start out boondocking so we sat down and did a guide, covering everything on managing power use while camping off the grid, to meal prep, handling water needs while boondocking and much more. JENNIFER I think what people will like the most is our suggestions on how to find the perfect boondocking spot, whether just as an overnight stop, or a place to really get away from it all deep in the woods for a few days. We also address the safety issue and candidly talk about what it’s like to be off the grid, both the challenges and the benefits. MIKE We have special introductory pricing on it that will expire in a couple days, but if you want to learn more about it, go to https://rvlifestyle.com/boondocking JENNIFER We should also give our weekly update on Mike’s Healthy Eating plan. If you heard Episode 208, you’ll remember Mike sharing how all that traveling and eating on the road has caused him to gain much more weight than he wanted. He resolved then to go on a healthy lifestyle plan,
Over the last seven years as many as a million people in Syria lived under siege, 400,000 of them in Eastern Ghouta alone. Some were trapped for more than four years of bombardment, sniping and near starvation. The walls that stopped them fleeing also prevented many of their stories leaking to the outside world. They could not leave and journalists, along with aid workers and human rights groups, could not get in. Over recent years, Mike Thomson has been using internet links and social media to get inside these isolated and often forgotten places. He has garnered compelling and moving interviews with residents in some of the hardest to reach places. We hear from long besieged Daraya, Eastern Ghouta, and IS surrounded Yarmouk to Eastern Aleppo, Madaya, Homs and Raqqa. With great fortitude and bravery many people told Mike their stories as bombs shook the walls around them. The result is extraordinary picture of everyday life in some of the most frightening and devastated places on earth. Yet amid the grim accounts of death, loss and destruction are inspiring examples of resilience, courage and hope. Most of these besieged areas have now been overrun and evacuated, but this programme ensures that what they went through will not be forgotten.
Most people have dreamed of winning the lottery. It's a dream that has become ever more common around the world as jackpots get bigger and lotteries more numerous. But does money really make us happy, and how much does this depend on where we live and how we spend it? To find out the BBC's, Mike Thomson meets lottery winners from around the globe.
In besieged East Aleppo a terrified mother of three makes one last desperate phone call to BBC reporter Mike Thomson. Silence followed. What happened to Om Modar?

Nearly half of all peace agreements fail. What can be done to stop countries from sliding back into civil war? Sri Lanka and Uganda are two countries that have suffered long and brutal civil wars, but have managed, to keep the peace - at least so far. BBC foreign affairs correspondent, Mike Thomson, who has reported from many conflict zones around the world, investigates how well both countries have managed to heal the wounds of war and what their experiences can teach us about winning the peace.
