This week we're joined by Chris Haskell of Punk Vacation, Mondo Macabro, and They Live By Film as we continue our series of high-class horror movies. We're talking about the divine black and white Swedish torment of Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf. Bergman is one of the all-time film making greats and you can see his fingerprints on the weirder corners of American film. In the case of Hour of the Wolf you can draw a direct line from this deeply introspective movie to the work of David Lynch. With Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman, Hour of the Wolf is a movie about a lot of things. It's about an artist's place in his own work, what it means to own a piece of art, it's about guilt and regret and the damage left in your wake when you're constantly following your heart. Ingmar Bergman is a filmmaker who seemed to be constantly going through something and this is one of the results of a man living in his head 24/7.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

This episode of Bloodhaus is covering the controversial 1971 French film, Don't Deliver Us From Evil. From wiki: “Don't Deliver Us from Evil (French: Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal) is a 1971 French horror drama film directed by Joël Séria, in his directorial debut, and starring Jeanne Goupil, Catherine Wagener, and Bernard Dhéran.[3] It follows two Catholic schoolgirls in France who are drawn toward increasingly evil deeds. It is loosely based on the Parker–Hulme murder case of 1954.The film was controversial upon release due to its depiction of adolescent crime and sexuality,[4] receiving an X rating in the United Kingdom and being banned in its native France.”Otherwise, Josh is still sick, Drusilla explains poster design, buying VHS from Be Kind Video, The House That Screamed, Who Can Kill a Child?, Arrow Video, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Last and First Men, Dallas, Mondo Macabro, Daisies, Heavenly Creatures, Natural Born Killers, Moonrise Kingdom, Muffin from Friday the 13th Part 2, and more!NEXT WEEK: The ShiningWebsite: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/ Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/ Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/ Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

After the nightmare of Terror at Blood Fart Lake, the Bloodfest goons needed some respite. An easy week with zero punishment was Dr. Nate's Rx, and everyone agreed that a quick rundown of our favorite boutique labels and recent releases was just the sort of low effort affair we required. Somehow we we talked for over two hours! We talked so long that Joey fell asleep on camera and may or may not have just cut us off before we were even done. We talked Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Arrow, Mondo Macabro, Imprint, Dark Force, Second Sight, Umbrella, Roninflix, and more! We took a look at several dozen of our favorite releases, talked movies in general, took a look at what's coming for the new year and worked in some poop and D jokes along the way. In this episode, we kick off a block focused on Musicals to close out the year. Michael marks his formal return with his pick of Hedwig and the Angry Inch from 2001. Jason questions some of the curiously lacking details that didn't make the jump from stage to film. Dustin digs deep into the film's theme of self-acceptance and offers some alternative interpretations. Michael champions just how ahead of its time the film was. Cort Psyops returns to discuss THE HORRIBLE SEXY VAMPIRE (1970)! Just how many words in this title accurately describe the film's contents? Woo boy. Your mileage may vary…… Recently rescued from dodgy video presentations by Mondo Macabro, this Spanish oddity is one of the stranger examples of Euro-Horror. We start our discussion remarking that the story behind the making of the film is probably more interesting than the film itself, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of onscreen elements to puzzle over. While the movie does sport a standard Lugosi-style vampire lurking around gothic places, the majority of the killings are handled nontraditionally. By that I mean that this vampire can somehow render himself invisible! Was this a stylistic choice on the filmmakers' part or a budgetary one? It hardly matters as it creates one of the more memorable aspects of the movie. Watching victims flail about fighting someone that isn't there is sure to keep you staring at the screen wondering just how crazy things will get. Mondo Macabro's Blu-Ray has a few excellent extras that give an explanation for how and why this film was made. The most interesting information involves the star of the picture how he started an acting career. This disc proves that any film can be made fascinating the more you know about it. I can only imagine what viewers in the past thought of this bizarre movie with no frame of reference for what went on behind the scenes. This is the kind of thing I live for! If you have any comments or questions thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Cort and I thank you for your time and attention! Happy Halloween.
"Alucarda" (1975) opens on a woman (Tina Romero) who has just given birth and knows she's not long for this world. She asks an old man who is with her to make sure her child, named Alucarda, goes to live in the local convent. The mother, presumably speaking of the devil, says, “Don't let him take her away.” After the old man leaves with the baby, the scene that transpires suggests that an evil force has come for the mother. Slithering, death rattle-like noises intensify and there are quick edits between close-ups of the mother's face and the faces of cobwebbed statues in the room. After the title cards, the film jumps forward 15 years. Alucarda (also played by Tina Romero) has been living at the convent. When Justine (Susana Kamini), another orphan around the same age, arrives, Alucarda bonds with her instantly. When the two stumble upon the place where Alucarda's mother died, they release a satanic force that possesses them and wreaks havoc upon the convent. The film, directed and co-written by Juan Lopez Moctezuma, has become a cult classic over the years, especially following the 2002 DVD release from media distributor Mondo Macabro. Underlying themes are breaking free from tradition (the Catholic Church, heteronormativity) by burning it all down in an attempt to embrace individuality (queer identity, atheism, feminism). Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: This piece on the history of nunsploitation films by James Newton Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" (1872), edited by Carmen Maria Machado (2019) This bizarre/incredible interview with Carmen Maria Machado A tiny bit of information on "Alucardos: Retrato de un vampiro" (2011), the fan-made documentary about Juan López Moctezuma (kinda) Here are some other films we mentioned during the episode: "The Devils" (Ken Russell, 1971) "The Exorcist" (William Friedkin, 1973) — Sound effects engineer, Gonzalo Gavira, worked on this film, along with "El Topo," and "Alucarda." "Fando y Lis" (1968), "El Topo" (1970), "The Holy Mountain" (1973), and "The Dance of Reality" (2013) — all by Alejandro Jodorowsky. You should probably also watch "Jodorowsky's Dune" (2013), Frank Pavich's documentary about this fucking weirdo and his quest to make the most absurd, impossible adaptation of "Dune" "Possession" (1981, Andrzej Żuławski) "Frankenstein" (1931, James Whale) "Child's Play" (1988, Tom Holland) "Scream" (1996, Wes Craven) "Black Narcissus" (1947, Powell and Pressburger) "The Mansion of Madness" (1973) and "Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary" (1974) are Moctezuma's other most popular films. The film that Jo mentioned where someone takes a two-minute shit onscreen is Wim Wenders' "Kings of the Road" (1976). Nonetheless, Kino has plenty to talk about and there are some more interesting cult films coming to the tale from the likes of Mondo Macabro and others. This is a more brief episode, […]

Recorded Saturday May 30th, 2020 What up, fans! That Horror Show Podcast is back with a new and exciting episode that is a change of pace from the usual. Your knowledgeable hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig recently dusted off their passports and caught a flight to check out some classic South Korean cinema. And, as luck would have it, they came across two films from the prolific Kim Ki-young: “The Housemaid” (1960) a crazed melodramatic-thriller that is highly regarded by critics as being “the best South Korean film ever made” (even none other than Martin Scorsese is a champion of the film), and “Woman Chasing the Butterfly of Death” (1978) which is a disjointed horror-thriller-melodrama-art film that is so bizarre, so weird and so captivatingly mad that only cult label Mondo Macabro could handle its Blu-Ray debut! So sit back and give this episode a listen! #KimKiYoung #TheHousmaid #WomanChasingTheButterflyOfDeath #THSP #sepn

CinePsyEP173 Movie Stack Jenga: The Blood Spattered Bride Support the show while you sport the show: https://teespring.com/stores/cinema-psyops Cort and Matt struggle with their inability to interpret a film like The Blood Spattered Bride that appears to be speaking about subjects they feel unqualified to analyze and lament their faliure to do so. They place the context of their interpretations on the supplemental materials found in the BluRay release of The Blood Spattered Bride from Mondo Macabro which shows perhaps they are not as ill equipped to understand such intelligent filmmaking. Along the way the Psyops boys take on Incels and the patriarchy while Cort sings the praises of two fellow film lovers he wishes he had even the slightest glimmer of their talent and knowledge. The boys dig deep to try to find every message and symbolic overture they can, but probably should just stick to the dick and fart jokes they are good at. iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cinema-psyops/id1037574921?mt=2 Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/cinema-psyops Google Play Music: https://play.google.com/music/m/Ij7cs3a2qml6bz2lajomirqcngi?t=Cinema_PSYOPS Cinema PSYOPS Main page: http://www.legionpodcasts.com/cinema-psyops/ Email feedback to Matt: psyopmatt@gmail.com. Join Jeff and Rich in welcoming a special guest at this month's meeting. When he heard our Dark Shadows episode, Steve Turek was inspired to watch the entire series during 2018. He finished in only four months... and lived to talk about it, which he does in this episode. He also shares his Monster Bash experience and joins us in discussing the two Dark Shadows movies: House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Presented by Dark Discussions Podcast is the new monthly Halloween Boutique: A Psychotronic Review podcast where co-host Phil reviews his various special edition blu-rays and DVD's from boutique companies such as Mondo Macabro, Severin Films, Synapse Films, Redemption Video, Code Red, Arrow Video, and all the rest. What's the purpose? Well, co-host Phil figured that if he purchased a special edition of a cult or horror film home release with extras and remastering of the motion picture, why not give his 15 minute opinion of each film right after he watches them. Similar to the Dark Discussions Terror Tantrum segment by Patrick Lacey or the Bloody Bits podcast by Jason Lloyd of Horrorphilia, Halloween Boutique takes some of the recent releases and obscure titles and goes into the background of the movie, how is the film itself, what the presentation and remastering is, and discussion on the extras upon each disc. This second edition of the podcast includes reviews of Russ Meyer's 1965 film Motorpsycho, Mondo Macabro's release of the 1984 slasher Don't Open Til Christmas, Vinegar Syndrome's disc of the mashup 1982 film Raw Force, the 1969 Radley Metzger epic Camille 2000 (released by Cult Epics), Redemption's definitive release of Jess Franco's 1973 The Demons, and the Blue Underground disc of the Italian giallo Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

In episode thirteen, Kat and Samm return to discuss Miklós Jancsó’s neglected 1976 film, Vizi privati, pubbliche virtù aka Private Vices, Public Virtues, which has recently been restored and will soon be released on Blu-ray by Mondo Macabro. Based on the Mayerling Affair from 1889, when the Crown Prince Rudolf, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, committed suicide with his mistress, Jancsó’s film ponders what could have transpired if Rudolf did not kill himself, but was murdered. Here, Rudolf (the beautiful Lajos Balazsovits) is a rebel and is determined to fill his days with sex, partying, scandal, and blackmail in an attempt to embarrass his father and eventually overthrow the government. The episode explores how this explicit, visually sumptuous film — which includes everything from orgies and incest to anal sex and bestiality, among other surprises — has been unfairly neglected for too long. But a discussion of Private Vices, Public Virtues is just the tip of the iceberg, and Kat and Samm also offer a retrospective of Jancsó’s catalogue in general, particularly his earlier Hungarian films and his time in Italy, and explore the themes that recurred throughout his career: sadism, nudity, horses, political repression, folk singing, candles, and men in uniform, among others. Also discussed are other sexually explicit films from 1976 — like Walerian Borowczyk’s La marge and Serge Gainsbourg’s Je t’aime moi non plus — and films with similarly transgressive content, like Tinto Brass’s Salon Kitty and Caligula.
