Podcast: Hack the Plant (LS 34 · TOP 3% what is this?)Episode: Securing Embedded SystemsPub date: 2024-09-25In this episode, Bryson sits down with MITRE EMB3D co-founder Niyo Little Thunder Pearson. For nearly 20 years, Niyo has been at the forefront of protecting critical infrastructure systems. He previously led incident response for American Express, directing the company's Security Operations Center during the LulzSec and Anonymous attacks, and worked to develop an adversarial cyber defense program for the nation's third largest gas utility at ONE Gas Oklahoma. Now, Niyo has co-founded MITRE EMB3D, a groundbreaking global threat network aimed at enhancing the security of embedded devices. What is MITRE EMB3D? Who is the intended audience? What problems is it trying to solve? “There is such a gap that exists today on what we understand and how risk averse these [embedded] devices are. They do well and they operate well. They're built for what they're doing in a safety context, but the security was never brought forward with it,” Niyo said. Join us for this and more on this episode of Hack the Plan[e]t. Hack the Plant is brought to you by ICS Village and the Institute for Security and Technology. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Bryson Bort, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

I have been an entrepreneur from 2012-2017 building two products AddoDoc and Babygogo. After selling my company to SHEROES, I and my partner Nansi decided to start up again. But we felt unequipped in our skillset in 2018 to build a large company. We had known 0-1 journeys from our startups but lacked the experience of building 1-10 journeys. Hence was born The Neon Show (Earlier 100x Entrepreneur) to learn from founders and investors, the mindset to scale yourself and your company. This quest still keeps us excited even after 5 years and doing 200+ episodes. We welcome you to our journey to understand what goes behind building a super successful company. Every episode is done with a very selfish motive, that I and Nansi should come out as a better entrepreneur and professional after absorbing the learnings. __________________________________Visit our Website: https://neon.fund/Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theneonshoww/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheNeonShowwFollow us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/beneon/__________________________________*Sponsor Shout Out*Looking to build a differentiated tech startup with a 10X better solution? Banking opportunity in India is tremendous, with overall banking assets expected to reach $3T by 2025, with deeply under-penetrated private credit markets which account for ~50% of GDP (vs. 150%+ for developed economies).Despite this large opportunity, customer experience and engagement in traditional consumer banking in India is broken and has been so for over a decade. With the increasing digital penetration in the country, customers armed with their smartphones are looking for an easy, seamless, quick and personalised experience and their expectations are ever-evolving.Neo-banks attempt to fix the broken customer journeys and provide a superior banking experience, serving as a layer over traditional banks. This means that customers no longer need to spend hours at their physical bank branch queues, mired in paperwork for everyday banking needs. While doing so, a neo-bank improves access to a whole suite of financial products across wealth management, lending, and insurance through a single platform. As Accel, we've always believed that technology can revolutionise banking and attempted to enable that ecosystem, first through our investment in Monzo in 2018, then through our investment in Zolve in 2021, and recently through a growth investment in Niyo - Niyo is a leader in the consumer neo-banking segment in India with a base of 5 million users. To understand this new era of banking which is fast unfolding, we spoke to Vinay Bagri, Co-founder and CEO of Niyo, who is a long-standing veteran in the banking industry in India. In this conversation, Vinay talks about how Niyo came into being, shares some of his reflections on the ongoing changes in the banking ecosystem, draws parallels from other fintech segments and discusses the need for regulatory support.Key segmentsThe large market opportunity for a neo-bank in India - 18:05 - 19:48How neo-banks provide a completely new banking experience - 20:22 - 22:41The success of neo-banks globally - 24:00 - 25:20Customer segmentation in neobanking - 30:25 - 32:12State of neo-banking regulations in India - 36:28 - 39:10We thank Vinay for coming on and sharing these insights with us and we wish him and Niyo team all the best for this amazing journey of revolutionizing consumer banking for India.Check out other episodes from the Insights Podcast series at https://www.seedtoscale.comShare your feedback and suggestions at https://www.twitter.com/Accel_India

What is a neobank?

Business Standard Podcast

Neobanks have made a splash in the fintech industry. New players have entered the market in considerable numbers. Their uniqueness is, they simplify financial services to the point where they meet the expectations of today's digital generation. So, how is a neobank different from the traditional banks we are used to dealing with? The answer lies in the definition. A neobank is a digital bank that does not have any branches. Instead of having a physical presence at a set location, neobanking is entirely online. A broad collection of financial service providers, who primarily target tech-savvy customers, comes under the umbrella of neobanking. Basically, a neobank is a fintech firm that provides digital and mobile-first services like payments, debit cards, money transfers, lending, and more. Neobanks bridge the gap between the services that traditional banks offer and the evolving expectations of new-age customers. They do this by providing personalised experiences, employing data-driven insights and offering value-added services. While traditional banks continue to struggle with bringing their legacy-based infrastructure into the digital age, neobanks leverage its modern digital platforms modern digital platforms to analyse customer data and make data-driven decisions. Neobanks can also afford to slash customer fees by a significant amount since they don't have to bear the expenses of running physical locations. Among the user experience enhancements that neobanks offer because of their tech-driven nature, is hassle-free account creation.   Since Neobanks don't have a physical office in neighbourhoods, consumers can create their accounts from their mobile devices from the comfort of their home. And, given their technology-driven KYC process, the account can be ready in just a couple of minutes.  And, how do you avail of a neobank's service? The same way you order food over Zomato or book an Uber cab. By using an app. Neobanks provide services via its mobile application. In India, neobanks don't have a bank license of their own. Instead, they count on bank partners that are regulated to provide bank-licensed services. The likes of Jupiter, Fi, Niyo, and RazorpayX are currently working in partnerships with traditional banks.

Why top lenders are laying the groundwork for digital-only banks

Business Standard Podcast

India currently does not have a licensing and regulatory regime for 'digital-only' banks.   Such a bank would primarily rely on the internet to offer its services and not physical branches, all the while being subjected to the same prudential and liquidity norms as that of the incumbent commercial banks. But some of the leading banks in India seem to be already preparing for that eventuality – looking to seize the opportunity as and when the RBI makes a decision. The country's largest lender State Bank of India is looking to appoint an advisor who will revamp its mobile banking app YONO to enhance customer experience and ease of use. The next generation of YONO, to be labelled 'Only Yono' will make SBI ready to launch a completely digital bank with a leaner and modular architecture with a personalised customer-centric design. And, it's not just SBI. As the Reserve Bank of India lifted the restrictions imposed on HDFC Bank's digital initiatives, a senior executive of the bank said in a TV interview that the private lender believes there is space for a completely digital bank on the lines of what some other countries are doing. Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia have introduced separate digital bank licensing regimes while South Korea, China and the UK have licensed digital banks within already existing regulations. In November last year, government think tank NITI Aayog floated the idea of setting up completely digital banks. In the absence of regulations for full-stack digital banks in India the closest equivalent is neo-banks where fintech companies partner with existing licensed banks. Such non-bank fintechs provide a software overlay through which consumers can access banking and value added services.  Some examples include RazorpayX and Open whose main focus is businesses while neobanks like Jupiter and Niyo are consumer-focused. This apart, existing licensed bank operate autonomous digital units under a different brand. These are essentially neobanking operations of traditional banks. Examples are SBI's YONO, Kotak Mahindra Bank's 811, 'digibank' by DBS. In September 2020, the then SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar had said that YONO could be worth $40-50 billion. However, separating YONO from SBI may not be practical since its value is derived by being the digital interface of the bank. It is still a mobile banking app that is an extension of SBI.  Each one of its users is still attached to an SBI branch. That is why SBI hopes YONO will lay the foundation for a digital bank in the future. Digital banks are cost-efficient models to serve different customer segments. The cost base of a digital-only bank can be up to 70% lower than its traditional counterparts. The important task for them will be to meet the expectations of the segments they want to focus on, be it millennials, students, salaried people or small businesses. Watch video

Banks, across geographies, have been slow to catch up with technology. Customers who are exposed to new age, high quality services are often frustrated when left to deal with complex, irrelevant communication and poor consumer experience. Virender Bisht, who interacted closely with banks for payment solutions, was shocked to see the pace of technology adoption. He started looking for ways to disrupt the traditional approach. Virender developed a fascination for computers and software during his mechanical engineering days. This continued as he worked at TCS on some transformational technology projects across large and small clients. Along the way, he discovered that he enjoyed working with smaller teams and transitioned to the startup world. The idea to disrupt banking came when he led the technology vertical at Makemytrip. He was introduced to Vinay Bagri in 2015, when the duo set out to build disruptive financial products under the name Niyo. Virender talks to us about their journey of building products ranging from employee benefit solutions to full-fledged banking services in an over-arching effort to simplify finance with technology.
