ALL THE WAY FROM BELGUIM!!! Black Men Living Abroad Series #blackmenlivingabroad Harry Kennedy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but he grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Information Technology. His interest in IT began at age 11 when he disassembled his first PC. His career in IT and his interest in life abroad officially started in 2014 as an intern at a global company based in Cincinnati, Ohio. There, he gained experience in Computer Networking, Systems, Security, and interacting with employees abroad. This eventually paved a pathway into being offered a full-time position. Harry working both with his local and foreign colleagues sparked curiosity in all sorts of ways regarding life abroad. In 2016, he finally went abroad for the first time to Denmark, Poland, and France on business travel shortly after starting full time. This experience made an immediate impact which grew into a passion for life abroad and learning about different cultures. In 2018, he jokingly got the opportunity to live and work abroad for the company's office in Belgium. He decided to take advantage of learning Flemish (Dutch), one of the country's official spoken languages. He became the sole IT resource for the EU offices. This, along with his new founded language learning skills, both impressed and won over the support from his Belgian colleagues. After realizing the impact reaching people in their native language had and the value it brought, this motivated him to learn more languages. He decided to aim to become multilingual. Since then, he's learned Dutch, French and Spanish to conversational fluency all within 4 years. He also serves as Chairman of the board for Passport For Change, a non-profit startup aiming to use global exploration to help black and brown youth between the ages of 5 and 18 to become global citizens. His experience abroad has been truly eye opening. He's absolutely grateful for taking on this challenge as it's helped him grow exponentially as a person. He's learned how to take on new approaches to life. With this knowledge and experience, he's using his time to give back to youth and others. He hopes to inspire them to pursue life changing experiences just like he had done. He also wants to share his story, and help others get into language learning and travel. John Paul went from high school drop out to the military to super successful real estate investor. During this episode, JP will help you figure out what your time is worth…down to the HOUR! He will make it CRYSTAL clear that the easiest way to scale your business is to pass off mundane tasks to virtual assistants. JP works with a company called REVA Global Virtual Assistants where even control freaks like Jen will find it easy to cut the cord on tasks that are not making enough money for the full value of her time. If you are considering adding some VAs to your team, you do NOT want to miss this episode! John Paul started his journey of personal and professional development back in 2008 when he attended college to obtain an Associates Degree in Applied Science and Computer Networking. He continued his education in 2016 when he joined Fortune Builders – the #1 Real Estate Education company. John Paul’s journey through real estate has been guided by the personal and professional skills the military has instilled in him. He has excelled in the real estate industry by implementing the education and executing the action items and coaching to the highest level. During his first year of real estate John Paul founded Anchored Homes which he used to complete four flips and four wholesales. He has gone on to grow a team of 8 team members that work remotely across the world and has completed 100+ real estate transactions while adding 40+ rental units to his long term holdings portfolio. After only two years of being a student of Fortune Builders, John Paul was recognized as a top-performing student and community influencer and was invited to become a Real Estate and Marketing coach. As a coach John Paul was top-rated by students, peers and staff for his incredible energy, creativity and genuine interactions. Having coached more than 3,000 students first hand John Paul has had the distinct privilege of evaluating businesses and markets across the country which has expanded his knowledge and resources. In 2016, John Paul attended his first real estate networking event where he was greeted with judgement, cold shoulders and closed minded individuals. His passion for collaboration and abundance mindset inspired him to found the South Jersey Real Estate Investor Network in Atlantic County. His passion to inspire and share all his tools and experiences have been a driving force in growing the group from one investor at the first event to a group that has over 1,300 members and hosting more that 30 events. Investors in the group have completed more than 100+ deals since its inception. In 2020, John Paul co-founded Social Soaring, a Social Media Management company for Real Estate entrepreneurs, with his Marketing Team Lead from Anchored Homes. After coaching busy entrepreneurs since 2018, he realized there was a massive gap between learning the strategies and tools and then finding the time to execute on what they were learning. He set out to create an affordable customer service oriented company that would help these busy entrepreneurs execute on their online presence. In 2020, John Paul co-founded Best Skip Tracer, a company that provides contact information for lead lists typically provided by Real Estate professionals. As a real estate entrepreneur John Paul has bounced around as a customer between several skip tracing companies that have all charged premium rates for low quality, recycled information. Setting out to find a better solution for Anchored Homes he collaborated with his business partner to develop a solution and then replicate it for other entrepreneurs so they didn’t have to experience the same pain. In 2020 John Paul co-founded Love My Stay, a Short Term Rental Business in Florida, that he operates with his wife (Carrie) and their lifelong friends. John Paul is using the rental arbitrage strategy that allowed him to quickly build his portfolio with little money out of pocket. The company specializes in helping landlords have a better experience with a premium tenant, like Love My Stay, that will bring the property to its full potential and then offer it up as a short-term rental to traveling professionals and families. John Paul currently lives in Virginia and operates all of his businesses remotely. Transport Layer Security (TLS), and its now-deprecated predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL),[1] are cryptographic protocols designed to provide communications security over a computer network.[2] Several versions of the protocols find widespread use in applications such as web browsing, email, instant messaging, and voice over IP (VoIP). Websites can use TLS to secure all communications between their servers and web browsers.
In computer networking, the link layer is the lowest layer in the Internet protocol suite, the networking architecture of the Internet. The link layer is the group of methods and communications protocols confined to the link that a host is physically connected to. The link is the physical and logical network component used to interconnect hosts or nodes in the network and a link protocol is a suite of methods and standards that operate only between adjacent network nodes of a network segment.
The Open Systems Interconnection model (OSI model) is a conceptual model that characterises and standardises the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to its underlying internal structure and technology. Its goal is the interoperability of diverse communication systems with standard communication protocols. The model partitions a communication system into abstraction layers.
The internet layer is a group of internetworking methods, protocols, and specifications in the Internet protocol suite that are used to transport network packets from the originating host across network boundaries; if necessary, to the destination host specified by an IP address. The internet layer derives its name from its function facilitating internetworking, which is the concept of connecting multiple networks with each other through gateways.
An application layer is an abstraction layer that specifies the shared communications protocols and interface methods used by hosts in a communications network.[1] The application layer abstraction is used in both of the standard models of computer networking: the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) and the OSI model.[2] Although both models use the same term for their respective highest level layer, the detailed definitions and purposes are different.
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name System has been an essential component of the functionality of the Internet since 1985.
In computer networking, the transport layer is a conceptual division of methods in the layered architecture of protocols in the network stack in the Internet protocol suite and the OSI model. The protocols of this layer provide host-to-host communication services for applications.[1]:§1.1.3 It provides services such as connection-oriented communication, reliability, flow control, and multiplexing.
A network packet is a formatted unit of data carried by a packet-switched network. A packet consists of control information and user data,[1] which is also known as the payload. Control information provides data for delivering the payload, for example: source and destination network addresses, codes, and sequencing information. Typically, control information is found in packet headers and trailers.
Computer Network Architecture is defined as the physical and logical design of the software, hardware, protocols, and media of the transmission of data. Simply we can say that how computers are organized and how tasks are allocated to the computer.

Colm MacCárthaigh is a Principal Software Engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS provides on demand cloud computing services to individuals, companies and governments around the world. If you're a customer of AWS, Colm has probably had a hand in the services you use - his past projects include Route53, Cloudfront and Elastic Load Balancer. If you like open source software, Colm was heavily involved in the original Apache HTTP Server and more recently was the driving force behind the release of s2n, a popular open source C99 implementation of the TLS/SSL protocol. If you're a fan of Irish folk music, Colm is part of several bands of such sorts and plays both in Seattle and on the road. If you're concerned about privacy and human rights, Colm is the founding director of Digital Rights Ireland and remains active on issues concerning privacy and immigration. I could go on but I think suffice to say, Colm is a man of many talents and interests. I'm super excited to have Colm on the show, not just because he's a great person to have a conversation with but also because he was my very first guest in my internal podcast at Amazon. Colm was kind enough to talk to me some two years ago then and is repeating that kindness once again by coming on to Folk Stories. A note that this talk does get slightly technical in a few places (what happens when two engineers talk about engineering) but I would consider the majority of this talk to be accessible regardless of your technical background. There are also show notes for everything we talked about if you want to find out more. In today's episode, we talk about what its like to be a principal software engineer at Amazon, why Colm went back to school despite having a good job and solid technical skills and matters of music and activism. These virtual machines are typically connected to the physical network via a virtualized network configuration. This could be as simple as a bridged interface to each virtual machine or as complicated as a virtual switch providing more robust networking features such as VLANs, QoS, and monitoring. In this paper, we explore whether Layer 2 network attacks that work on physical switches apply to their virtualized counterparts by performing a systematic study across four major hypervisor environments - Open vSwitch, Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V Server and VMware vSphere - in seven different virtual networking configurations. First, we use a malicious virtual machine to run a MAC flooding attack and evaluate the impact on co-resident VMs. We find that network performance is degraded on all platforms and that it is possible to eavesdrop on other client traffic passing over the same virtual network for Open vSwitch and Citrix XenServer. Second, we use a malicious virtual machine to run a rogue DHCP server and then run multiple DHCP attack scenarios. On all four platforms, co-resident VMs can be manipulated by providing them with incorrect or malicious network information. Mr. Bull is a Computer Science Ph.D. graduate student at Clarkson University focusing on Layer 2 network security in virtualized environments. He presented his preliminary research involving MAC flooding attacks against virtualized networks at the DerbyCon 4.0 computer security conference held in Louisville, KY in September 2014. Mr. Bull earned an A.A.S. degree in Computer Networking at Herkimer College in 2006 and completed both a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science at the State University of New York Institute of Technology in 2011. He was a founding faculty member of the School of Engineering at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in both the Network and Computer Security and Telecommunications programs, and also served as an advisor to the SUNY Poly Network and Computer Security club. Mr. Bull recently made a transition to Utica College as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science with a focus in networking and cybersecurity. He also co-founded and is one of the primary organizers of the Central New York Intercollegiate Hackathon event which brings together local cybersecurity students from colleges in Central New York to compete against each other in offensive and defensive cybersecurity activities. Dr. Matthews is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Clarkson University. Her research interests include virtualization, cloud computing, computer security, computer networks and operating systems. Jeanna received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999. On Tuesday, we did our second network security podcast with Sam Bowne, Professor of Computer Networking and Information Technology from City College of San Francisco. We had a nice discussion with Sam sharing his thoughts on security and providing us with a snapshot of some of the latest and greatest developments in the field of network security. Here’s some of the questions we asked Sam: In our last conversation you mentioned that you got a BS and PhD without ever graduating high school. A number of listeners were amazed that you were able to do this and wanted more details – for example did you get a GED? Did you take the SATs? Mike sent over an article on password cracking – did you see anything interesting in that article? It’s been over a month since we last spoke. You had mentioned the PWN 2 OWN contest and were also planning to attend some training. Could you tell us the outcome of the contest and anything interesting you learned in your training? Any interesting news in network security exploits or defenses in the last month? Sam discusses a number of things in the podcast including: Lifehacker password-guessing Web of Trust Firefox (and Chrome)Extension NoScript Firefox Extension IPv4 Address Exhaustion Wikileaks Sam's class content, email and lots of other great stuff can be found at http://samsclass.info/ Check him out - one of the best!
In this podcast, we’d like to introduce Dr Sam Bowne – Professor of Computer Networking and Information Technology from City College of San Francisco. Gordon and I have known or known of Sam since 2004. Sam is a tremendous classroom instructor bringing his extensive expertise in and passion for networking and network security to his students and his colleagues. Sam is also generous with his knowledge, making his lectures and classroom materials available to anyone who wants to learn. In what we hope will be a recurring role, Sam joins us today to share his thoughts on security and provide us with a snapshot of the latest and greatest developments in the field of network security. Here's some of the questions Sam answers: 1. Sam you have a BS and a PhD in Physics – how did you end up in networking and security? 2. You’ve been at CCSF since 2000 – what classes do you teach? 3. Ethical hacking? Sounds like an oxymoron – what do you mean by ethical hacking? 4. I know you’ve taken some of your students to DEFCON in Las Vegas. This conference of hackers is probably unlike anything our listeners have ever attended. Could you tell us a little about it? 5. Are most of the attendees self-taught or do they attend formal classes? 6. In terms of recent developments (threats, security solutions, and research), what’s been on your radar screen lately? 7. Sam how do you keep up with all of this information? 8. What about your own skills and knowledge? How do you keep these up-to-date? 9. If a student is interested in learning more about networking – in particular securing a network, how would you advise them to get started? What sort of characteristics – in a student – would make them a good candidate for this type of work? 10. Now for something from a chat session with a student: my twitter account was hacked :( -- maybe i should hop on that security course just for some personal safety do you, yourself actually keep different passwords for everything? i'm freaked out and want to differentiate all my passwords but, that's crazy! What advice can you give my studemt? Sam's class content, email and lots of other info can be found at http://samsclass.info/ Check him out!!
