Episode 199: Fall Faves, Salute To Mark Volman September 19, 2025 Here's another Tales Vinyl Tells for ya.  High, hello and welcome back to more of that great album rock of the 60s & 70s along with (sometimes) tunes on either sides of those decades. It's almost fall here in middle Tennessee and Nashville.  Summer is winding down and it's been one hot mothuh, and not in a good way.  The dogwoods have put out their little green pods which have grown into bigger red pods, and the season will change soon.  It's on the way.  Today's hour includes some songs about fall and there's also my statement about the mess in these United States with a lying evil fascist in our White House.  They bricked over the Rose Garden and there's so much gaudy fake gold nugget accents in the Oval they should offer barf bags at the door.  No more spray paint, ok??  And he wants a Nobel Prize and wants to name the Beloved Kennedy Center after himself or her.  What a flabby gas bag.  I can't stand this guy, the Russian asset, ruining not running the US.  He's the Master of Disaster, the dark lord (thinks he's God, more like the antiChrist).  The first set goes out to Capt Bonespurs.  That's my rant for today.  Mark Volman of the Turtles has entered the room next door, we remember him. and I've got a new one from Neil Young in this first set.  You'll like this one! Now Let's play some great Tales that Vinyls Tell. I'm Brian Hallgren.  Let's spin some! And thanks for listening today.  My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com.  If you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org, we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places.

“My name has become a horror to all those who want slavery,” declared Jean‑Jacques Dessalines as he announced the independence of Haiti, the most radical nation‑state during the Age of Revolution and the first country ever to permanently outlaw slavery. Enslaved for the first thirty years of his life, Dessalines (c. 1758–1806) joined the revolution that abolished slavery within the French colony. Then he became a general in the colonial army of the new French Republic. When it was discovered that France once again supported slavery, Dessalines declared war on his former allies. Fighting under the slogan “Liberty or Death,” his army forced the French to evacuate in late 1803. At the start of the new year, Dessalines declared independence from France and became the leader of a free Haiti.A hero to Haitians for centuries, Dessalines is portrayed abroad as barbarous and violent. Yet this caricature derives not from facts—as Dr. Julia Gaffield demonstrates with extensive new research—but from the fears of contemporary enslavers. Showcasing the man behind the myths, Dr. Gaffield reveals Dessalines's deep suffering, warm friendships, and unwavering commitment to destroying slavery, racism, and colonialism, and his bold insistence on his people's right to liberty and equality. Our guest is: Dr. Julia Gaffield, who is associate professor of history at William & Mary. She is the author of Haitian Connections in the Atlantic World: Recognition after Revolution; and of I Have Avenged America: Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Haiti's Fight for Freedom (Yale UP, 2025). She lives in Williamsburg, VA. In this episode of Continuing the Conversation, Craig and Colin unpack one of the most overlooked but deeply relevant concepts in the Bible: idolatry. But this isn't just about golden calves or ancient cultures—it's about the subtle ways we still worship false gods today. Craig walks us through the history, theology, and surprising humanity behind idolatry, and shows how it affects everything from how we view God… to how we view ourselves. They also dive into the deep end with a conversation about the limits of human understanding, open theism, and what we do when God seems to “change His mind.”

The drive to be the best has always carried a cost, but in Justin Tipping's new film “HIM,” that cost curdles into something nightmarish. Opening September 19 through Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures, the story takes the familiar arc of athletic ambition and twists it into a surreal descent where glory and terror run side by side. As one of the rare entries in the sports horror genre, it pushes the language of both forms into strange, unsettling territory. In the film, Tyriq Withers plays Cam, a rising football star whose career is derailed after a brutal assault leaves him with brain trauma. Salvation seems to arrive when his idol, legendary QB Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), offers to train him at a remote desert compound. But mentorship quickly warps into manipulation, and the pursuit of greatness becomes a sinister crucible threatening to consume him entirely. The ensemble also features Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, and more.READ MORE: ‘Alien: Earth': Noah Hawley On Creature Design, Transhumanism & Proving The Show Belongs In The ‘Alien' Canon [Bingeworthy Podcast]Director Justin Tipping joined The Playlist's Bingeworthy Podcast to discuss the film, and during the conversation, explained why the script instantly felt like his. “I was an athlete, played all the sports, and my father was a quarterback and like a pole-vaulting champion. I understood the drive and the passion and the agony of defeat and ecstasy of victory and the locker room aspects of it,” he said. “And then the sheer mashup with this horror genre — I cannot point to another comp. The opportunities here were to create a new language and combine languages to create something new.”

On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Steve Riley welcomes Susan Drumm—a Harvard-trained lawyer, bestselling author of The Leader's Playlist, and leadership advisor whose path from law to acting to consulting shaped her approach to leadership. Susan shows how to lead with purpose by connecting music, neuroscience, and personal growth. Her eclectic career taught her the power of reinvention. Today she helps leaders uncover blind spots, disrupt limiting patterns, and embrace cognitive diversity, enabling purposeful leadership in business and life. Susan shares how music can shift emotional states, rewire the brain, and help leaders stay grounded in high-pressure moments such as client meetings or trials. She explains why processing negative emotions is essential and how reframing them—using tools like music—can turn challenges into opportunities for growth. Listeners will hear vivid stories, like how Bruno Mars' 24K Magic helped her release resentment and reclaim her confidence. You'll also learn how her use of the Enneagram can help uncover leadership “superpowers” and strengthen team dynamics. This conversation is a fresh reminder that true leadership is more than strategy. It's about how you show up, connect with others, and lead with purpose every day. In this episode, you will hear: Susan Drumm's unique journey from law to leadership advising, integrating music and neuroscience  Importance of pattern recognition and cognitive diversity in enhancing leadership and team dynamics  Music as a transformative tool for shifting emotional states and breaking free from negative patterns  Creating empowering playlists to promote emotional resilience and personal growth  Leveraging tools like the Enneagram to identify blind spots and improve decision-making  Using music to consciously foster freedom, connection, and playfulness in leadership  Advice and resources for using music to enhance leadership skills and personal development  Subscribe & Review Never miss an episode.
