Cathy Louise has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for 31 years. Her first teacher was Beryl Bender Birch, who she did a two-year apprenticeship with in New York in the late 1980s. Cathy Louise's early studies with Beryl still inform her teaching today. Cathy Louise met Pattabhi Jois during his first visit to New York and received his blessing to teach Ashtanga in 2000. Known for her transformative hands-on adjustments, Cathy Louise's teaching style also owes much to John Scott. In the late 1990s, she assisted John in his Mysore classes in London and then inherited her own Mysore style classes at Astanga Yoga London. While in London she taught vinyasa yoga at Triyoga, did a year-long apprenticeship in Pregnancy Yoga with Lynne Pinette, and met Nancy Gilgoff who was pivotal in empowering Cathy Louise as a female Ashtanga teacher. Cathy Louise's Pregnancy and Mom & Baby classes draw on her experience as a mother of three. In her Ashtanga classes too, she openly shares her journey as a woman so students may learn how best to adjust the practice of yoga in all stages of their lives. Perimenopause is the time before menopause. A woman's hormone levels start to change causing symptoms like: Irregular menstrual cycles – ovulation becomes less regular. Flow can be lighter or heavier Hot flashes – hormone changes can start to create hot flashes. Sleep problems – due to hot flashes or “night sweats”. Mood changes – hormone levels change meaning some women have more mood swings, irritable. Decreased fertility – ovulation becomes less regular so it's harder to conceive. Changes in sexual feeling – less interested in sex. Loss of bone density – with lower oestrogen bones lose density faster than you can replace bone. Changes in cholesterol levels – lower oestrogen levels can make you start to have “high cholesterol”. Other symptoms can be vaginal dryness, weight gain, slow metabolism, thinning hair, and dry skin. Menopause is when you have not had a menstrual cycle for at least a 12-month period. Menopause can happen in your 40s to 50s. The average age in the US of menopause is 51 years old. Symptoms can continue as with “perimenopausal” symptoms, and you can also experience: Fatigue, difficulty concentrating or memory loss, dizziness, weight gain, incontinence, bloating, changes in body odour, depression and anxiety, breast pain, headaches, joint pain, burning tongue, muscle tension, dry itchy skin, osteoporosis, gum problems, anxiety, brittle nails, tingling in the legs/arms. Early Menopause or Premature Menopausecan happen any time before the usual age of 40s-50s. Early menopause can come with having a hysterectomy (removal of ovaries), chemotherapy (cancer treatment) or stress. It's important if you have early menopause that you have a balanced diet and take medical advice to make sure you remain healthy.

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of our podcast P for Parenting. In this episode, Anubha & Anjali are with a guest. They are talking about the importance of Yoga for children and Mothers, specifically pregnant women. Anubha and Anjali are joined with Meena Thanu. Meena is a yoga instructor for the last twenty years. She started by telling how she ends being a yoga instructor. Meena's daughter was born with one of her tear ducts closed due to which she went through surgeries. Meena was looking for an alternative to surgery so she started learning yoga along with her daughter. When Meena's daughter started showing improvement, Meena decided that she will teach yoga to other children also so that no other children can fell ill. Meena told Anubha and Anjali that yoga is natural for babies. Their body is flexible and they are unknowingly doing a lot of movements which are yoga posture. This is the reason why it is easier to teach yoga to children and also why they should join. They also talked about that while other forms of exercise are very boring, one can enjoy yoga. "Yoga is not only teaching but also fun during exercising", Meena said. Meena also told that yoga during pregnancy is also recommended. Meena added, "We don't force pregnant women to do yoga rather we modify Aasans as per their need. Sometimes we let them sit on a chair and let them do only breathing exercises". Irena Bartolec spends her time between Bali, Croatia and Costa Rica, and is an authorized ashtanga yoga teacher. She is an amazing strong woman and shares with us her story of raising her child as a single mother.Despite being told she wouldn't be able to conceive, Irena found out she was pregnant at eight weeks. Irena craved moving her body, so practiced yoga by visualising and breathing, and later by lying on her back with her legs against a wall. When her daughter was only two weeks old, her husband left and she was left to raise her daughter alone. Irena turned to her yoga mat and began a practice, feeling this was her only safe place.Irena has taken trips to Mysore and then Bali, where she found a supportive community of mothers. We hear how yoga has given her the strength to endure the challenges and heartache that she faced. This is a great episode, and you will get to hear all about how she has managed to raise her daughter, maintained her ashtanga yoga practice, while teaching or running her yoga shala. When does back pain start in pregnancy? In our previous episode we discussed how many women experience back pain during the early stages of pregnancy as a result of physiological changes that can impact soft tissues resulting in an increase in the risk of low back pain and low back injury. As pregnancy develops there are physical changes that influence the biomechanics of the lower back, as well as the muscles of the abdominal wall. So how do these changes increase the risk of low back pain and what can be done to manage it?In this episode we discuss back pain pregnancy during the second and third trimester. We give consideration to the changing biomechanics as a result of weight gain whilst discussing the incidence of diastasis recti during pregnancy. We talk about diastasis recti repair, diastasis recti treatment and diastasis recti exercises. We also discuss pregnancy yoga and give some direction regarding the activities that should be avoided for good back health. Finally, we discuss low back pain risks postpartum and identify some key factors to consider to maintain back health and enhance core strength. Highlights Focussed weight gain shifts the centre of gravity as pregnancy develops and results in increased activation of the low back extensors, which increases disc compression. However, there are strategies to help reduce extensor activity and relax these muscles to help reduce discomfort. The incidence of diastasis recti is more common than appreciated, and often misunderstood so we provide clarity on the problem and identify diastasis recti exercises to avoid. For more episodes of the Back Pain Solutions podcast visit: www.smartstrong.co.uk Don’t forget to subscribe so you can receive updates on new episodes and direct links to additional content. If you’re suffering from back pain, want to improve your posture, or want to build resilience to future injury then you’re in the right place. Pregnancy Yoga is an area of yoga that many teachers do not have a lot of knowledge in.  It is rarely included in teacher training courses outside of specific pregnancy yoga trainings.  There are also a lot of different thoughts and opinions on the subject online, making it very hard to do your own research. In effort to shed some light on the subject and to help make yoga safer for pregnant women, in this show Jamie interviews two pregnancy yoga teachers, Gabi  Goncalves and Grace Sisto.  They discuss: How the practice should change depending on the trimester What are the first questions a teacher should ask a pregnant student Is pregnancy a good time to start yoga and if you have an existing practice when should you stop practicing What styles of yoga are best for pregnant women What postures should be avoided during these nine months And much more.  This is a very useful podcast for anyone who is pregnant, has a friend or relative who is pregnant or for any teachers who want to expand their knowledge in order to keep students practicing safely.

At the urging of her parents, Rajashree began her yoga practice when she was four years-old. She is a five-time winner of the National Indian Yoga Championship from 1979 to 1983. By age 11, Rajashree won several titles. This experience shaped her life dream of encouraging youth to practice yoga. Born in Kolkata, living in Los Angeles since age 19, Rajashree Choudhury's background is a true blend of the East and West. To promote yoga-asana as a sport, Rajashree founded the http://www.usayoga.org/ (United States Yoga Federation) and the http://i.yogasportsfederation.org/ (International Yoga Sports Federation). Because of Rajashree's efforts, the International Yoga Asana Championships is now in it's tenth year. "Much of the work I have done promoting yoga as a sport has been fired by my desire to inspire youth to practice yoga."Rajashree believes that introducing yoga at an early age helps ameliorate and avoid problems that arise as one journeys through life. With a special focus on the emotional side of yoga, Rajashree advocates yoga's impact on not only physical health, but also the mind, body and soul. An unprecedented passion for public service, Rajashree has a degree in yoga therpay and is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. In 1994, Rajashree co-founded Bikram Yoga's Teacher Training program, and continues teaching heated hatha yoga..
