Tom welcomes Portfolio Manager Michael Gayed, author and publisher of the Lead Lag Report, back to the show. Michael highlights the current market situation and why it is challenging to make accurate predictions about the near future. There is overconfidence amongst investors that the economy will avoid a recession, despite increasing default risks. Additionally, most believe that stocks will continue to outperform, even though the charts are not indicative of a new bull market. Michael also shares his concerns about Treasuries and the rising possibility of bank failures. He believes that the Fed is more reactionary and less anticipatory, and they will most likely take a longer time to respond to the current economic situation. We are approaching a crucial turning point, and something must be done to address the mounting issues. Michael explains the importance of the Gold to Lumber ratio, which acts as a leading indicator for the housing market. He has faith in this ratio as it has proven to be an accurate indicator of market trends. Finally, Michael discusses the irrationality in markets and its possible outcomes. He believes that the market is in a state of euphoria, which may lead to a severe downturn in the future. He also highlights the need for more rationality. Michael Gayed: The Only Year in History when Treasuries have Lost More than Stocks

Tom welcomes back Michael Gayed, Portfolio Manager at Toroso Asset Management. Michael is the author and publisher of the Lead-Lag Report. Michael discusses how insane this year has been and how this is the only year in history where treasuries have lost more money than stocks. The only period it can be compared with is 1931. We're in very abnormal territory. People can get overly comfortable if something isn't happening immediately. We saw that with FTX and Lehman Brothers collapses. The beauty of FinTwit is the ability to see the short-term perspective of investors. Michael says, "When investment becomes religion, it's time to lose faith." This is what happens in markets people get overly confident in markets, and we're seeing margin calls in crypto. Usually, margin calls aren't limited to just one asset class. He explains the terms risk on and risk off. For the bulk of this year, Toroso's signals have been risk-off and defensive. The melt-up scenario is still very much in play, but we're in a recession. Melt ups are basically just FOMO which eventually fizzle out. A split government isn't a bad thing for markets and the economy. The best thing is to lower fiscal spending to reduce inflationary pressures long term. In many ways, the Fed may be trying to counter seasonality. The strength in the dollar is usually tied to a good treasury market, but this year is the exception. The persistence of the dollar has been relentless until recently. The bear market will continue to take some time to play out. We're setting records for the rate of change in many areas. All the statistics are showing that something is not normal. All investors can do is hope that it ends, and Michael is seeing some reason for optimism. Gold needs the dollar to underperform, and the market needs to believe that a bear market will persist. The link between miners and gold price is not that correlated. Miners are dependent on additional factors like energy and input costs to consider. At some point, we end up in a similar debt to GDP situation with that of Japan. Who knows where we will be in another ten years. Tom welcomes returning guest Michael Gayed, Portfolio Manager at Toroso Asset Management. Michael is the author and publisher of the Lead-Lag Report. Michael discusses the inflationary picture for the economy and the hellish performance of the bond markets. We're seeing large drawdowns in bonds and severe pain in fixed-income bonds. Negative real rates have been a problem for a while and the problems in this sector have broad implications. Yields spiking and bond sell-offs will increase the cost of financing. These costs will reduce the income of most companies and countries. Europe is likely already in a recession and the United States may also have reached that point. He discusses the normal signs of recession and why the stock markets may not care. We see a strong dollar with strong commodity demand which is an interesting phenomena. It seems unlikely that the Fed can control inflation and higher interest rates are not going to help countries get more grain. Michael believes that unions are likely to make a long-term come back. It's difficult for the United States to produce many products at reasonable prices due to the cost of labor. It takes years to build up resources and manufacturing sectors. Most people today are looking for instant gratification. Rating agencies may be forced to begin downgrading companies, particularly in this environment. They are seeing a lot of abnormal market relationships but eventually, markets will correct for these conditions. He discusses his expectations for commodities and further money printing. Michael notes there is considerable infrastructure crumbling around the world. We don't know the true prices for food given the current circumstances. However, we've been heading toward a food crisis for many years due to a lack of investment. All of the current global problems will take considerable time to play out. Keep an eye on mortgage rates and housing because that may be the area where there is a considerable concern. Michael Gayed: Gold Has not YET Responded to Negative Rates

Tom welcomes returning guest Michael Gayed, Portfolio Manager at Toroso Asset Management, to the show. Michael is the author and publisher of the Lead-Lag Report. Michael notes that this year has been remarkable in many ways. Treasury yields since March have been grinding lower, which indicates a risk-off market. Likewise, lumber to gold has tanked. However, utilities have been underperforming, which is concerning. All of these crashes are occurring in the context of trillions in stimulus. Small caps have underperformed along with emerging markets since February. However, the S&P continues to grind higher. What if the Fed is correct about inflation being transitory? That could suggest a big downside surprise as all of the ordinarily tight correlations seem to be breaking. We are seeing price inflation but not wage inflation. If inflation is transitory despite such a massive surge in money supply, that will raise concerns about the Fed's ability to influence the market. Does the Fed still have control, or are they trying to push on a string? Bond market credit spreads are beginning to widen and blow out, which could indicate higher default risks. However, the prevailing narrative may be wrong, and we could be in for a surprise. There are unintended consequences to a world awash in money. The dovishness of the Fed is likely to promote complacency and exacerbate risk-taking. Gold tends to have a low correlation to most assets, and currently, gold hasn't responded. There could easily be a rather sudden adjustment up for gold. Volatility is likely to rise, and gold is one thing that many investors move into in a crisis. Cryptocurrencies make sense as a portion of a portfolio, but there is a lot of overconfidence in the space. The one thing that Bitcoin can't fix is human behavior, and we see that with overleverage and exuberance. Unfortunately, this behavior also exists in the equity market, and the first thing that goes away in a unwind or liquidity crisis is the leverage. Michael points out that if everything in your portfolio is making you money, you are almost certainly not adequately diversified. The vast majority of people do not realize the concentration risk they are taking. Therefore, it's essential to take a systematic approach to rebalance your portfolio. Welcome back to The Burn, Beyond Firestop. I'm still your host John Zalepka. If you don't know, this show is dedicated to life safety. So I'm on a mission to find the most interesting people in the space to get their unique perspectives. Now you can usually find me training people so that they understand where firestop falls in the whole life safety end of things, but the subtitle of this show tells you that we want to get beyond that. So our hope is that our listening audience walks away with an understanding of how our guests and their businesses also contribute to the promotion of life safety of whatever is being built. Our show is brought to you by Specified Technologies, also known as STI Firestop. We are a global leader in the fire protective industry. We develop innovative fire protective systems that help stop the spread of fire, smoke and hot gases. Our guest today is also knowledgeable on such things as she helps the fire protective industry, she's responsible for setting marketing, product, sales, and innovation strategy for Lubrizol Advanced Material's fire protection segment, which includes BlazeMaster(R) CPVC piping systems and freezemaster(TM) Antifreeze. Key Takeaways Lainey's background Started a business at age 8, selling signs. Ran it for 4 years.  Double Major at Penn State, Marketing & Spanish Getting into Firestop Interned at Tyco Returned after graduation to become Associate Global Product Manager Mentorship Led a committee while working for Chemours to start a mentorship program.  Career at Lubrizol  Compatibility program called FBC System Compatible Lubrizol invented CPVC Multiple brands such as Corzan®, FlowGuard Gold®, BlazeMaster®, and freezemaster™ Guidance on ingredients Not all CPVC are created equal  Additional Work & Committees  Part of 5 different committees for NFSA, National Fire Sprinkler Association  Future Leadership ITM Inspection, Testing, Maintenance Quality Assurance  Residential Supplier Manufacturers Council  About Lainey: When I was in second grade, I started a business creating and selling signs out of my basement. Granted, the only customers of my cleverly named "Sign Store" were my parents, baby sitter, and neighbors, but it was pretty legitimate for a company run by an eight year old --- I had an office (empty storage closet), a cash register (thank you, Santa!), employee ID badges (complete with head shots from my iZone Polaroid), and even a monthly newsletter. I'm proud to say that I ran my little basement business until I got into the sixth grade. Clearly, with my Sign Store as evidence, I am one of those people who is fortunate to have known from a very young age exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up. I have always had a passion for business, a desire to lead and encourage others, and a knack for solving problems. I am self-motivated, incredibly driven, and ever curious; I strive to constantly learn and challenge myself in whatever I do. In a prior role as Global Product Manager, Residential Products and Programs for Tyco FPP (now a part of Johnson Controls,) I was able to do what I love while continuously developing my business acumen. On any given day you could find me out in the field gathering customer feedback, in the office driving new product development projects, in the lab leading innovation workshops, or on the phone with cross-functional teams working to optimize processes. In my Market Development role at Chemours, I was able to not only gain exposure to a new industry (HVAC) but also further hone my marketing and business development skills. I've since returned to the fire protection industry as the Fire Protection Segment Manager at Lubrizol where I am in charge of setting the business and marketing strategy for BlazeMaster(R) CPVC Piping Systems and freezemaster(TM) Antifreeze. Something Lost Something Found by Natalia Paruzel-Gibson The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children and gives a peek behind-the-scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community. In this episode, we're going to read Something Lost Something Found by Natalia Paruzel-Gibson. ✅ ABOUT THE STORY: Ella feels like she is stuck in a pile of gloomy mud. She misses her mom so much. So, Ella embarks on a quest to find happiness again, wishing upon a star, trying to cook it up in a magic potion, and searching for it in all the places her grieving young heart leads her. Little by little, Ella begins to find solace in memories of her mom. Something Lost Something Found is a story for young readers about the profound bonds we share with our loved ones, the importance of childhood memories, and the innate yearning to endure even the most indescribable grief. This tale's empathy and wisdom shine through every wistful, charming scene. ✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Growing up in Poland, the Stefan Jaracz Theatre was Natalia's playground, a place where she eagerly watched her Mom on stage from behind the scenes. It was her mother's passion for the Arts that ignited Natalia's love of storytelling, acting, and photography at a young age. After immigrating to Canada in 1990, Natalia's artwork made several appearances in Toronto's Nuit Blanche. She was presented with the Young Talent Award from the Turzański Foundation for writing and reciting poetry. After finishing her Double Major in Drama and Photography at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, Natalia completed her undergrad in English Literature and History, which later led to her completion of a Master of Arts program at the University of Toronto. While Something Lost Something Found is Natalia's debut as an author, she has been fervently writing children's stories for the last decade. Her writing is inspired by her own experiences as a mother of two children and her quest to perceive the world through their lens. ✅ CONNECT WITH ME: Loved the story from this episode? For those with drive, the STANDARD H Podcast is a loose conversation about the lives of entrepreneurs and those who’ve grown companies. Today’s guest has occupied a slot in the latter category. He also happens to be a friend of mine. His name is Brett Weiner, and we discuss his journey from working for his parents construction business at the age of 11 to designing one-off pieces for Nixon watches. Brett shares a common attribute of several guests hosted on this podcast, and that’s a distaste for school, which seems funny given he discovered a way from being a C-Student in college majoring in Economics to becoming a Double Major student with a 4.0 GPA. Brett also shares his foray into working for a division of Burton Snowboards, the importance of being hungry to reach your goals & objectives, and how it shouldn’t always be about the dollars at the end of the day. What I love about Brett is his selfless approach to his work. He thinks about the consumer. And he has a natural bias towards what’s best for the companies for which he’s worked, as opposed to designing what he himself likes, and I find his approach to be so admirable, especially as someone growing companies he doesn’t own. I always enjoy my conversations with Brett because they always exhibit a certain level of quality. We share a lot of the same interests such as surfing, snowboarding, and even cycling, and these are all covered, but there’s also a deeper element whenever we get together that I always leave wishing we had more time, and this episode is certainly no exception, so I hope you enjoy it. Tom welcomes returning guest Michael Gayed, Portfolio Manager at Toroso Asset Management, to the show. Michael is the author and publisher of the Lead-Lag Report. Michael discusses the differences between volatility and risk. Risk comes when you might have a permanent loss of capital, while volatility can usually be overcome with patience. It's essential to identify the weather that is coming in markets. Conditions are always changing, and you need to be aware of the trends. Michael feels we are heading toward a storm. The Fed has broken the bond market when they choose to buy up assets. Stocks and bonds may no longer be sufficient to diversify your portfolio. Fed policies have enabled prolific spending and an ever-increasing wealth gap. The argument today is that debt doesn't matter, but that will have unintended consequences. Today, there is a large degree of complacency surrounding the risks. European financials are looking horrendous. Lumber may be a warning sign of a weakening economy. The Fed has stated they will do whatever it takes to keep the equity markets propped up. Faith in the Fed will burst at some point, but that bubble will likely last for a while longer. More money is flowing into hedging assets like gold. Further weakness in commodities like oil, lumber, and energy could sign a coming storm for the global economy. He says, "Risk is always where you don't see it." Sehmat Suri has spoken on stages in Dubai, London (U.K.), Halifax, Toronto, and Vancouver. She helped launch and scale Square Roots, an innovative social enterprise that is taking on the challenge of food waste and food insecurity. She took on the challenge of finding a partner to turn carrots destined for the landfill into a craft beer and even a beer for dogs. People laughed. The beer sold out in record time. You can also find Sehmat working part-time as a model where she combines her passion for fashion with her very long and beautiful hair (her instagram handle is semiwiththegoodhair so I guess I can get away with that comment). What makes this even more impressive is Sehamt achieved all this while completing a Double Major in Marketing and Psychology at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. She even managed to survive a co-op work term working remotely for me. Yes folks, Sehamt was employee number one for Screw the Naysayers. Sehmat’s journey to Canada is inspiring. Originally from Calcutta India, Sehmat chose Canada to pursue her University education. In this episode Sehmat talks about: the work she did with Square Roots, and other social enterprises as part of the Enactus chapter at her College. Enactus is a global organization working with college students in 38 countries around the world. The challenges she faced coming to a new country Why she decided to make Canada her permanent home Her thoughts on finding your purpose What it was like working for a crazy boss like me And lots more If you haven’t guessed, I’m a huge fan of Sehmat.
