Musik?

A conductor, harpsichordist, and organist, Masaaki Suzuki stands as a towering figure in Baroque music, renowned for his comprehensive and top-tier recordings of Bach's works, including all of Bach's sacred and secular cantatas. Suzuki's unparalleled dedication extends beyond Bach, with significant contributions to the works of Mozart, Handel, and other 18th-century composers. He is the founder of the Bach Collegium Japan, an artist in residence at Yale, and conducts orchestras and choruses around the world. Tyler sat down with Suzuki to discuss the innovation and novelty in Bach's St. John's Passion, whether Suzuki's Calvinist background influences his musical interpretation, his initial encounter with Bach through Karl Richter, whether older recording of Bach have held up, why he trained in the Netherlands, what he looks for in young musicians, how Japanese players appreciate Bach differently, whether Christianity could have ever succeeded in Japan, why Bach's larger vocal works were neglected for so long, how often Bach heard his masterworks performed, why Suzuki's favorite organ is in Groningen, what he thinks of Glenn Gould's interpretations of Bach, what contemporary music he enjoys, what he'll do next, and more. In the latest episode, we bring you a Christmas treat of not just one but two Cuttings in a sibling special with Guy Cutting (tenor) and Hugh Cutting (countertenor). They touch base in Netty's lair (hotel room) during the Christmas Oratorio tour with Masaaki Suzuki. There are talks of chaotic travelling, funny audience encounters, an unusual request for a Sony Ericsson charger and many more amusing stories.Captivating brothers Guy and Hugh Cutting, who grew up together and are now touring together share their learnings of the voice, family inspirations and the transition from choral to solo singing. They discuss the significance of training to sing at a young age and there are humorous childhood tales of recreating movies at home, such as their two-person version of Harry Potter and moments of sibling mix-ups that many may find relatable. --Tea with Netty is the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's podcast hosted by viola player Annette Isserlis (Netty). Dezember.
In this episode, OAE Principal Oboe Katharina Spreckelsen joins Netty for tea and chats. She recalls her first encounters with the oboe at a Christmas Eve Midnight Mass, where she discovered the joy of Bach's chorales in the Christmas Oratorio and the energetic oboe parts. You can catch her performing and experience the same musical delights in our upcoming concerts with Masaaki Suzuki. Also, find out how to fit three cellos, violas, flutes, and a family in one car.Katharina traces her roots back to Germany to studying and launching her career as a baroque oboist in the UK. She reminisces on her involvement in various programming projects such as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner from our previous Songs of Travel season in 2022/23, and the delights of rehearsing with actor and friend, Rory Kinnear. Katharina shares her love for learning and teaching throughout the years which continues to grow.--Tea with Netty is the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's podcast hosted by viola player Annette Isserlis (Netty). Zrealizowano w ramach stypendium Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego. W odcinku zabrzmiały następujące utwory: J. Kuhnau, Tristis est anima mea, Camerata Lipsiensis & Opella Musica, Gregor Meyer (dyr.), Kuhnau: Complete Sacred Works, Vol. 1, CPO (777868-2), 2015 J. Kuhnau, Ach Gott, wie läßt du mich verstarren (fragment), Camerata Lipsiensis & Opella Musica, Gregor Meyer (dyr.), Kuhnau: Complete Sacred Works, Vol. 4, CPO (555190-2), 2019 J. Kuhnau, I Sonata z cyklu Sonat biblijnych, cz. IV, Colin Tilney (klawesyn), oryg. Philharmonic Records PRL 0201, 1960. J. Kuhnau, Magnificat, cz. Masaaki Suzuki is internationally renowned as an expert in choral music and an accomplished organist, harpsichordist and conductor. The founder and artistic director of Bach Collegium Japan, he has recorded the entirety of Bach's choral works, plus his concertos, orchestral suites, and solo works for harpsichord. His expertise extends well beyond Bach, having conducted repertoire as diverse as Britten, Beethoven, Mahler and Mendelssohn, but it's Mozart that brings him to Australia as he conducts the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, joined by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, for Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor, June 7-10, at the Sydney Opera House. In this conversation, Masaaki talks with great passion about the importance of Bach as a foundation stone to the composers who follow, shares some memorable tales from his earlier years, and introduces some of the vast number of recordings of Bach Collegium Japan.

The music played at mass can often become a lightning rod for disagreements. What instruments are most appropriate? Are hymns necessary? How do we navigate conflict? Archbishop Richard Smith is joined again by Roderick Bryce in tackling these practical questions on Sacred Music!Roderick Bryce is the Music Director at St. Joseph Basilica. Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, Roderick relocated to Stettler, Alberta with his family in July 2013. In Scotland he was in great demand as a baritone, teacher, vocal coach and choral director. As a singer, he is broadcast often on BBC Radio 4 and regularly sang with Cappella Nova, recording music by James Macmillan on Linn Records. Also on Linn Records, he has recorded Bach's Matthäus-Passion and sung across Scotland, Northern Ireland and France with the Dunedin Consort. He has appeared with Masaaki Suzuki's Bach Collegium Japan at the Edinburgh International Festival. What music is appropriate for mass? Is there a right and a wrong to what songs and styles get played? Roderick Bryce joins us so that we can dive deep into what the Church teaches us about sacred music, and what makes it so sacred any way. In this part 1 of our discussion we get into the official teaching and principals, and it part 2 (to be released in a couple weeks) we go in to the practical questions.Roderick Bryce is the Music Director at St. Joseph Basilica. It seems that every minute of every day, a musician is playing Bach's music somewhere on our planet. Clemency Burton-Hill charts the playing of Bach across a day and around the globe with stories from musicians who each have a daily ritual of playing some of this music. Ilay Kenes is an 11-year-old Belgian boy who plays some Bach on his guitar every morning when he gets out of bed. Other musicians around the world who play Bach every morning include Masaaki Suzuki on the harpsichord or organ in Tokyo, Hungarian-born organist Xaver Varnus in his own church in Nova Scotia, pianist Grant McLachlan looking out at Table Mountain from his house in Cape Town and cellist Nicola Yamazaki in Austria. Some musicians play Bach every day but not at a set time. Iranian-born pianist Ramin Bahrami plays Bach whenever he needs him throughout the day. In one of Kenya's largest slums, David Joroge shares the cello he plays with other students at the Art of Music Foundation and so he plays Bach Cello Suites every day, at a time when there's a cello free. Finally, British viola player, Robin Ireland plays last thing at night before bed in his house in Brittany. Where did this daily ritual of playing Bach every day begin? Maybe with Beethoven or perhaps Mendelssohn. But it was the Catalan cellist Pablo Casals who wrote, "For the past 80 years I have started each day in the same manner. It is not a mechanical routine but something essential to my daily life. I go to the piano, and I play two preludes and fugues of Bach. I cannot think of doing otherwise. It is a sort of benediction on the house. Each day is something new, fantastic, unbelievable. That is Bach, like nature, a miracle!" Clemency herself either listened to or played Bach every day for as long as she can remember. But in January 2020 she experienced a brain haemorrhage, and everything changed. After emergency surgery, she was unconscious for 17 days and then slowly emerged. She's still working her way back to her own daily encounter with Bach's music. This week's podcast is devoted to exploring the music, life and legacy of the greatest genius of Baroque music – and arguably of all music – JS Bach. Editor Martin Cullingford invited Bach specialist and Gramophone reviewer, the Royal Academy of Music's Principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, to talk about the composer of some of the most profound masterpieces ever written. Gramophone Podcasts are presented in association with Wigmore Hall. Musical excerpts are taken from: the Cello Suites by David Watkin on Resonus; the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by Rachel Podger on Channel Classics; the Goldberg Variations by Beatrice Rana on Warner Classics; and the St Matthew Passion conducted by Masaaki Suzuki on BIS.

Theologian Miroslav Volf and philosopher John Hare (Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at Yale Divinity School) discuss Gov. Andrew Cuomo's fundamental question behind reopening the economy from COVID-19 lockdown, “How much is a human life worth?” Why we should go to such great lengths, sacrificing so much, to save a single human life? What about humans gives us dignity? How should we approach the dilemmas posed by incommensurable values, where there's no agreed upon standard for comparison? How can we better frame the question of the value of human life by observing the life of Jesus?“My conviction is that human life doesn't have a price. And I take this from the philosophy of Immanual Kant, who distinguishes between the dignity human life has, and price. And dignity is, he says, incommensurable worth.""Jesus came to be with us: Emmanuel. And that's what we have lost. We can't be with each other. … I think what we've learned through this is: A good human life is one that has physical contiguity with other humans.""I was for some years working on the staff of Congress, and public policy decisions often came down to this question of comparing goods. I think a Christian has has something to say about this, and it is, Miroslav, part of your work, that you've been thinking about what a good human life is like. One of the ways to look at that is to look at what the life of Jesus was like. And that gives us a sense of what's important, what matters. It doesn't answer all the questions, but it does give us a map as it were, of how we should think about what is more important and what is less."Gov. Andrew Cuomo (NY) May 5 Press Briefing “What is the Worth of a Human Life?”https://abc7ny.com/politics/cuomo-on-reopening-how-much-is-a-human-life-worth/6153317/"Dona Nobis Pacem” (“Grant Us Peace”) a movement from Johan Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor, performed by the Bach Collegium Japan, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffrsc3wdBt4

Twenty five years after his first recording for BIS of JS Bach's St Matthew Passion, Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan have taken the work into the studio for a second time, and a magnificent achievement it proves. James Jolly met up with Suzuki when he was in London recently, working with students at the Royal Academy of Music.
This podcast features an interview with tenor James Gilchrist, in which we discuss a variety of topics relating to being a singer: - psychology of performance, particularly, in somewhere like the Wigmore Hall where he was singing that evening. - the way audiences might perceive song recitals, and what performers can do to engage them regarding such perceptions. - the balance between what artists do on stage to communicate with their audience, e.g., how much is moving around or maintaining eye contact? - interpretation of narrative in lieder repertoire. - the challenges and privileges of being a medical doctor (which James initially started as), and making the transition to becoming a full-time professional performer. - comparing the experience of music college versus university. Many thanks to James for coming especially to London in the morning to record, as well as Tamsin Raitt and the staff at Wigmore Hall for arrangements for the interview! Podcast published on 13th February 2020; recorded on 8th February 2020 in the Gerald Moore Room, Wigmore Hall, London. James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His musical interest was fired at a young age, singing first as a chorister in the choir of New College, Oxford, and later as a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. James’ extensive concert repertoire has seen him perform in major concert halls throughout the world. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the St John and Matthew Passions feature prominently in his schedule, and he is celebrated as perhaps the finest Evangelist of his generation. Recent engagements include Elijah in Goteborgs Symfoniker and Masaaki Suzuki, Handel’s Messiah with the Handel & Haydn Society in Boston, with Bernard Labadie, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In the 2019-20 season appearances include the role of Rev. Horace Adams Peter Grimes with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner in London and Norway, St Matthew Passion with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Egarr, and a tour of Europe with Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki.

Dave Beck speaks with guest conductor Masaaki Suzuki. Together with his son, Masato Suzuki, Masaaki has created a performing version of Mozart’s very last composition, the famously unfinished Requiem Mass. The piece was written by Mozart on his deathbed and it was left to his students and others to complete the work. Masaaki Suzuki leads the SSO, Seattle Symphony Chorale and vocal soloists in Benaroya Hall this week in an edition of the Requiem that the Suzukis put together from fragments of the music Mozart left behind. All three of the works on the program this week explore topics of mourning and loss. There are also works by Toru Takemitsu and Karl Amadeus Hartmann on the program.

Conductor and Bach expert Masaaki Suzuki talks to Sean Rafferty about his work with the Bach Collegium Japan. His son and fellow musician Masato Suzuki joins them.
Masaaki Suzuki is director of Bach Collegium Japan, one of the foremost early music ensembles in the world. He talks to Sara about his life in music and introduces her to some of his favourite choral recordings.
Conductor Masaaki Suzuki talks to Sean Rafferty, ahead of a concert in St John's Smith Square with the Bach Collegium Japan. When Suzuki first suggested recording a complete cycle of Bach's cantatas to the director of the BIS record label, his proposal was met with "uncontrollable laughter". However, hearing Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan won the record executive over, and the rest is history. Suzuki tells Sean Rafferty how he was drawn to Bach, why vocal training in Japan makes Japanese singers ideal for his music, and, now that the Bach cycle is complete, and what the future holds beyond the music of the great master.
Masaaki Suzuki is a leading expert on baroque music and Johann Sebastian Bach, and he directs performances all over the world of baroque masterpieces by Bach and his contemporaries. In April 2014 he led top students from Yale and Juilliard in NYC and New Haven concerts of Bach's St. John Passion. Professor Suzuki made time to stop by the Sunday Baroque studio between those performances to talk about his approach to Bach and music in general.
