In this episode, Dr. Roger Morrison shares insights from his groundbreaking book Clinically Verified Materia Medica: The Tapestry of Homeopathy, Volume One, a game-changing resource rooted in decades of clinically verified cases. He discusses his transition from traditional medicine to homeopathy, inspired by George Vithoulkas, and how this experience shaped his approach. Roger highlights the critical role of sensation language in homeopathy, revealing how it deepens practitioner-patient connections and uncovers patterns missed by conventional Materia Medica. He also offers expert analysis of key remedies like Gelsemium and Camphor, demonstrating how clinical evidence enriches our understanding far beyond textbook descriptions.   Episode Highlights: 03:24 - That one question led me to homeopathy - and it all started in the trash 09:10 - The day I felt homeopathy's power for the first time 12:56 - The story behind every word in the Clinically Verified Materia Medica 17:58 - The forgotten symptoms of cured cases 24:34 - Write it, share it, then forget it—that's the fate of most cured cases 28:16 - Proving says one thing. Patients say another 33:28 - The power of a remedy finally seen clearly 37:36 - When it's sensation language, less is more 41:48 - That's when you know it's Camphor 46:15 - This isn't just a book—it's 45 years of love, loss, and learning 52:13 - Each case is a life interrupted 01:03:00 - Teasers for Upcoming Books About my Guests: Dr. Roger Morrison is a distinguished physician and leading educator in the field of homeopathy. After earning his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1978, he began his career as an emergency room doctor. A pivotal experience during a homeopathy seminar in Athens, Greece inspired him to pursue advanced studies at the Athenian Center for Homeopathic Medicine, where he earned a prestigious diploma in 1984. Dr. Morrison later co-founded the Hahnemann Medical Clinic and the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in California, helping shape modern homeopathic education. He has lectured worldwide, published over 20 scholarly articles, and authored several influential textbooks including Desktop Guide, Desktop Companion, and Carbon: Hydrocarbon and Organic Chemicals in Homeopathy. Create memories of insect food starting from the summer vacation of 2023.""Creating Memories of Entomophagy Starting from the Summer Vacation of 2023'Traveling Cricket Museum Flavor' uniquely blends basil-based spices and herbs to express the imagery of the quiet and cool 'scent of that museum.' It seems that the 'scent of that museum' is derived from the odor of camphor used to preserve specimens. Camphor is a natural component derived from the oil of the camphor tree, and it is known to be present in basil as well. Recently, odorless preservation agents have replaced camphor in specimen preservation, but there are still insect researchers who continue to use camphor because they enjoy that scent. The concept behind TAKEO's 'Traveling Cricket' is to create insect food that brings joy to the people 'in that place.' This time, the stage is the museum shop of the insect exhibition. This product was born from the staff of the Fukuoka Great Insect Exhibition asking, 'Is there any good insect food that can be sold as a museum shop item?'Dr. Munetoshi Maruyama, the curator of the Fukuoka Great Insect Exhibition and a professor at Kyushu University, is actually the senior of Ryohta Mitsuhashi, the developer of TAKEO, from his student days. For us, it is an opportunity that will never come again to work with the admired Dr. Maruyama and Kyushu University Museum, so we put even more effort into product development. Initially, ideas such as cricket with mentaiko (spicy cod roe) flavor or tonkotsu ramen flavor were suggested due to the exhibition being held in Fukuoka. However, with the desire to create a product with longevity, we twisted the idea into the concept of 'museum flavor' and shaped it.While adults reminisce about the memories of the old museum, children create memories of entomophagy starting from here.'Traveling Cricket Museum Flavor' has become a product that will surely bring joy not only to the customers who visit the museum, but also to the museum shop staff."Japan in JapanAs prices soar, Japan returns to human waste fertiliserMovie "How do you live" 2.1 billion yen at the box office for 4 daysJapan and the WorldJapan and Saudi Arabia to Jointly Produce Ammonia Public-Private FrameworkCOVIDJapan poll finds half of workers against returning to office after COVID

Did you know that between 1834 and 1917, more than one million Coolies were taken across the Kala Pani, or Dark Waters, to the plantations of Malaya, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, British Guiana, Jamaica, and British Honduras? In “Coolie Woman: the Odyssey of Indenture,” Gaiutra Bahadur describes how the British and other Colonial Powers transformed generations of skilled Indians into an “indistinguishable mass of plantation laborers.” Part of that transformation took part during the journey from India to the Caribbean which, for many, was unimaginably excruciating. In fact, poor ventilation, outbreaks of disease, and a lack of food was common aboard the ships used to transport Indentured Indians. When they reached their destination, they were met with a hostile and unfamiliar environment and forced to work long hours for low wages. But despite all odds, they persevered and laid a foundation that future generations would build on. The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1791 On this day, Martha Ballard recorded her work as an herbalist and midwife. For 27 years, Martha kept a journal of her work as the town healer and midwife for Hallowell, Maine. In all, Martha assisted with 816 births. Today, Martha's marvelous journal gives us a glimpse into the plants she regularly used and how she applied them medicinally. As for how Martha sourced her plants, she raised them in her garden or foraged them in the wild. As the village apothecary, Martha found her ingredients and personally made all of her herbal remedies. Two hundred twenty-nine years ago today, Martha recorded her work to help her sick daughter. She wrote, My daughter Hannah is very unwell this evening. I gave her some Chamomile & Camphor.   Today we know that Chamomile has a calming effect, and Camphor can help treat skin conditions, improve respiratory function, and relieve pain.   1835 Birth of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (known by his pen name Mark Twain), American writer and humorist. Samuel used the garden and garden imagery to convey his wit and satire. In 1874, Samuel's sister, Susan, and her husband built a shed for him to write in. They surprised him with it when Samuel visited their farm in upstate New York. The garden shed was ideally situated on a hilltop overlooking the Chemung ("Sha-mung") River Valley. Like Roald Dahl, Samuel smoked as he wrote, and his sister despised his incessant pipe smoking. In this little octagonal garden/writing shed, Samuel wrote significant sections of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Prince and the Pauper, A Tramp Abroad, and many other short works. And in 1952, Samuel's octagonal shed was relocated to Elmira College ("EI-MEER-ah") campus in Elmira, New York. Today, people can visit the garden shed with student guides daily throughout the summer and by appointment in the off-season. Here are some garden-related thoughts by Mark Twain. Climate is what we expect; the weather is what we get. It was a soft, reposeful summer landscape, as lovely as a dream and as lonesome as Sunday. To get the full value of joy You must have someone to divide it with. After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the garden with her than inside it without her.   1874 Birth of Lucy Maud Montgomery, Canadian writer and author of the Anne of Green Gables series. Lucy was born on Prince Edward Island and was almost two years old when her mother died. Like her character in Ann of Green Gables, Lucy had an unconventional upbringing when her father left her to be raised by her grandparents. Despite being a Canadian literary icon and loved worldwide, Lucy's personal life was marred by loneliness, death, and depression. Historians now believe she may have ended her own life. Yet we know that flowers and gardening were a balm to Lucy. She grew lettuce, peas, carrots, radish, and herbs in her kitchen garden. And Lucy had a habit of going to the garden after finishing her writing and chores about the house. Today in Norval, a place Lucy lived in her adult life, the Lucy Maud Montgomery Sensory Garden is next to the public school. The Landscape Architect, Eileen Foley, created the garden, which features an analemmatic (horizontal sundial), a butterfly and bird garden, a children's vegetable garden, a log bridge, and a woodland trail. It was Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote, I love my garden, and I love working in it. To potter with green growing things, watching each day to see the dear, new sprouts come up, is like taking a hand in creation, I think. Just now, my garden is like faith, the substance of things hoped for.   1875 Birth of Frank Nicholas Meyer, Dutch-American plant explorer. Frank worked as an intrepid explorer for the USDA, and he traveled to Asia to find and collect new plant specimens. His work netted 2,500 new plants, including the beautiful Korean Lilac, Soybeans, Asparagus, Chinese Horse Chestnut, Water Chestnut, Oats, Wild Pears, Ginkgo Biloba, and Persimmons, to name a few. Today, Frank is most remembered for a bit of fruit named in his honor - the Meyer Lemon. Frank found it growing in the doorway to a family home in Peking. The Lemon is suspected to be a hybrid of a standard lemon and mandarin orange. Early on in his career, Frank was known as a rambler and a bit of a loner.  Frank once confessed in an October 11, 1901, letter to a friend, I am pessimistic by nature and have not found a road which leads to relaxation. I withdraw from humanity and try to find relaxation with plants.   Frank was indeed more enthusiastic about plants than his fellow humans. He even named his plants and talked to them. Once he arrived in China, Frank was overwhelmed by the flora. A believer in reincarnation, Frank wrote to David Fairchild in May 1907: [One] short life will never be long enough to find out all about this mighty land. When I think about all these unexplored areas, I get fairly dazzled... I will have to roam around in my next life.   While China offered a dazzling landscape of new plant discoveries, the risks and realities of exploration were hazardous. Edward B. Clark spoke of Frank's difficulties in Technical World in July 1911. He said, Frank has frozen and melted alternately as the altitudes have changed. He has encountered wild beasts and men nearly as wild. He has scaled glaciers and crossed chasms of dizzying depths. He has been the subject of the always-alert suspicions of government officials and strange peoples - jealous of intrusions into their land, but he has found what he was sent for.   Frank improved the diversity and quality of American crops with his exceptional ability to source plants that would grow in the various growing regions of the United States. He was known for his incredible stamina. Unlike many of his peers who were carried in sedan chairs, Frank walked on his own accord for tens of miles daily. And his ability to walk for long distances allowed him to access many of the most treacherous and inaccessible parts of interior Asia - including China, Korea, Manchuria, and Russia. Frank died on his trip home to America. He had boarded a steamer and sailed down the Yangtze River. His body was found days later floating in the river. To this day, his death remains a mystery. But his final letters home expressed loneliness, sadness, and exhaustion. He wrote that his responsibilities seemed "heavier and heavier." The life of a Plant Explorer was anything but easy.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel  This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is The Life and Times of Cockshutt Wood. John Lewis-Stempel is a farmer and a countryside writer - he prefers that title to 'nature writer.' The Times calls him Britain's finest living nature writer. Country Life calls him "one of the best nature writers of his generation.' His books include the Sunday Times bestsellers The Running Hare and The Wood. He is the only person to have won the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing twice, with Meadowland and Where Poppies Blow. In 2016 he was Magazine Columnist of the Year for his column in Country Life. He lives in Herefordshire ("heh-ruh-frd-shr") with his wife and two children. And The Wood was a BBC Radio 4 'Book of the Week'  The Wood is written in diary format, making the whole reading experience more intimate and lyrical. John shares his take on all four seasons in the English woodlands, along with lots of wonderful nuggets culled from history and experience. And I might add that John is a kindred spirit in his love of poetry and folklore. John spent four years managing Cockshutt wood - three and a half acres of mixed woodland in southwest Herefordshire. The job entailed pruning trees and raising livestock (pigs and cows roam free in the woods).  John wrote of the peace and privacy afforded him by his time in the woods. Cockshutt was a sanctuary for me too; a place of ceaseless seasonal wonder where I withdrew into tranquility. No one comes looking for you in wood.   The Woods covers John's last year as the manager of Cockshutt. The publisher writes,  [By then], he had come to know it from the bottom of its beech roots to the tip of its oaks, and to know all the animals that lived there the fox, the pheasants, the wood mice, the tawny owl - and where the best bluebells grew.  For many fauna and flora, woods like Cockshutt are the last refuge. It proves a sanctuary for John too. To read The Wood is to be amongst its trees as the seasons change, following an easy path until, suddenly the view is broken by a screen of leaves, or your foot catches on a root, or bird startles overhead. This is a wood you will never want to leave.   The Wood starts in December - making it the perfect holiday gift or winter gift. John writes about the bare trees and the gently falling snow. The landscape becomes still and silent.  John writes, Oddly aware, walking through the wood this afternoon, that it is dormant rather than dead. How the seeds. the trees and hibernating animals....are locked in a safe sleep against the coldand wet.   By January, the Wood stirs to life with the arrival of snowdrops. If snowdrops are appearing, then the earth must be wakening. Of all our wildflowers the white hells are the purest, the most ethereal. the most chaste... Whatever: the snowdrop says that winter is not forever.   As The Wood takes you through an entire year, the book ends as another winter approaches. The trees are losing their leaves. Animals are preparing for their long sleep. John is preparing to leave the woods for his next chapter as well. Looking back, he writes,  I thought the trees and the birds belonged to me. But now I  realize that I belonged to them.   This book is 304 pages of a joyful, poetic, and soul-stirring time in the woods with the elegantly articulate John Lewis-Stempel as your guide - he's part forest sprite with a dash of delightful nature-soaked tidbits. You can get a copy of The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $6.   Botanic Spark 1936 On this day, the Crystal Palace in London was destroyed by fire. The spectacular blaze was seen from miles away.  Joseph Paxton, the English gardener, architect, and Member of Parliament designed the Crystal Palace, aka the People's Palace, for the first World's Fair - the Great Exhibition of 1851. Joseph had built four elaborate glass greenhouses for the Duke of Devonshire in Chatsworth, which provided valuable experience for creating the Crystal Palace.  The Joseph Paxton biographer Kate Colquhoun wrote about the immensity of the Palace: "[Paxton's] design, initially doodled on a piece of blotting paper, was the architectural triumph of its time. Two thousand men worked for eight months to complete it. It was six times the size of St Paul's Cathedral, enclosed 18 acres, and entertained six million visitors."   The Crystal Place was an extraordinary and revolutionary building. Joseph found extra inspiration for the Palace in the natural architecture of the giant water lily. Instead of creating just a large empty warehouse for the exhibits, Joseph essentially built a massive greenhouse over the existing Hyde Park. The high central arch of the Palace - the grand barrel vault you see in all the old postcards and images of the Crystal Palace - accommodated full-sized trees that Joseph built around. Another innovative aspect of the Crystal Palace was the large beautiful columns. Joseph designed them with a purpose: drainage. By all accounts, the Crystal Palace was an enormous success until the fire started around 7 pm on this day. The manager, Sir Henry Buckland, had brought his little daughter, ironically named Chrystal, with him on his rounds of the building when he spied a small fire on one end of the Palace. Newspaper reports say the flames fanned wind through the Handel organ as the Palace burned to the ground. A sorrowful song to accompany the end of an era in plant exhibition.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

A few months ago a friend and I were talking about King Crimson & Robert Fripp. He is not as familiar with Fripp's work as I am so I started a playlist of not just Crimson tracks but also other excellent Fripp guitar work with other artists such as Brian Eno, David Bowie, David Sylvian, Hall & Oates(yes, Hall & Oates!) & others.    This week I decided to finally make a mix of some of the tracks. I wasn't sure if or when I'd post it online. Then this morning I see that today, Oct. 19th, is the global premiere of the King Crimson documentary "In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson at 50". What a perfect coincidence!    I guess that makes the decision for me about when to post the mix. So here it is - a collection of some of my favorite Fripp guitar work. In order to keep the length manageable I had to leave out some great tracks like Bowie - Heroes, King Crimson - Lark's Tongue is Aspic, Talking Heads - I Zimbra, Fripp & Eno Heavenly Music Corp. & several others. I think the tracks I settled on cover a wide range and fit together nicely over the 84 minutes of the mix.   If anyone is interested the documentary will be shown in a special streaming event this weekend on Oct. 22nd. The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1735 On this day, a French expedition made the first attempt to transport cinchona trees to Europe. The scientist Charles Marie de La Condamine was the first man to describe the Cinchona tree, the scientist Charles Marie de La Condamine, was on the expedition along with the botanist Joseph de Jussieu. Their mission was to add the trees to a Paris collection, but sadly the trees were lost when they were washed overboard. Once Europe learned of the power of the Cinchona tree, they were eager to get their hands on the bark. Cinchona's name was in honor of a Spanish Countess named Ana, and her second marriage was to the Count of Chinchon. After the Count was given the job of serving as the viceroy of Peru, a station that oversaw the entire continent of South America, except for Brazil, the couple arrived in Lima in 1629.   The following year, the Countess grew gravely ill with tertian ague. She suffered a fever that occurred every other day, the Governor of Loxa, Don Francisco Lopez de Canizares, sent over a life-saving parcel of cinchona bark. With the cinchona powder, the Countess made a rapid recovery. Eleven years later, when the Count and Countess began their return trip to Spain, they brought along a precious supply of the curative Quina bark for use with their people. They also hoped to introduce cinchona medicine to the rest of Europe.   Sadly, Ana died during the long voyage home in Cartegena in December 1639. But Ana's legacy lives on in the medicine we know today as quinine. After her husband, the Count returned to Spain, the medicinal Quina bark powder became known as Pulvis Comitissa in honor of the Countess. And over 100 years later, Linneaus named the genus Cinchona in honor of the Countess of Chinchon in 1742. Linneaus should have called it Chinchona, but he forgot the "h."   1809 On this day, the herbalist and midwife Martha Ballard worked in the raised beds in her garden and recorded her annual spring gardening efforts. For 27 years, Martha kept a journal of her work as a gardener, town healer, and midwife for Hallowell, Maine.  Today, Martha's great journal gives us a glimpse into the plants she regularly used and how she applied them medicinally. As for how Martha sourced her plants, she raised them in her garden or foraged them in the wild. As the village apothecary, Martha found her own ingredients and made all of her herbal remedies personally. As a midwife, Martha assisted with 816 births. In May of 1809, Martha worked in the gardens surrounding her house. She sowed, set, planted, and transplanted.  On May 15, she planted squash, cucumbers, muskmelons, and watermelons. And on this day, May 16, she sowed string peas at the end of her garden. In Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's work, The Life of Martha Ballard, she writes, Martha's was an ordinary garden, a factory for food and medicine that incidentally provided nourishment to the soul.  "I have workt in my gardin," she wrote on May 17, the possessive pronoun the only hint of the sense of ownership she felt in her work. The garden was hers, though her husband or son or the Hallowell and Augusta Bank owned the land.  "I have squash and Cucumbers come up in the bed [on the] east side the house," she wrote on May 22.  The garden was hers because she turned the soil, dropped the seeds, and each year recorded in her diary, as though it had never happened before, the recurring miracle of spring.   1861 On this day, Union Captain Jacob Ritner wrote back to his wife, Emeline. Jacob and Emeline exchanged marvelous letters throughout the Civil War that depicted their heroic lives on both the battlefield and homefront. While Jacob wrote with the tragic news of war, Emeline kept him apprised of their four small children and the challenges of maintaining the family farm. Emeline's news from home kept Jacob sane and anchored to the happier reality that awaited him after the war. Emeline often wrote about the garden and the landscape, proving that even news of a faraway garden can be anchoring and grounding amid hardship. And so, on this day back in 1861, Jacob wrote in his letter, Now Emeline dear, you must write me a great long letter next Sunday.  Tell me all the news, how the trees grow, the garden and grass, what everybody says...   1918 On this day, the rose season began at Munstead Wood, the Arts and Crafts style home and surrounding gardens in Surrey, England, created by garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. Munstead Wood became famous thanks to Gertrude's books and articles in magazines like Country Life. Gertrude lived at Munstead Wood from 1897 to 1932. Volume 82 of The Garden celebrated the first rose to open at Munstead Wood on this day by reporting, The rose season begins. The opening the first Rose is always a source of delight. The first we have seen in the open this year was the pink Rosa rugosa at Munstead Wood on May 16. This is one of the oldest garden roses and is said to have been cultivated since 1100 A.D. in China, where the ladies of the Court prepared a kind of potpourri from its petals, gathered on a fine day, and mixed with Camphor and Musk.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Secret Garden Cookbook, Newly Revised Edition by Amy Cotler This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Inspiring Recipes from the Magical World of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. If you've been listening to the show, I've been on a little bit of a cookbook kick lately, and cookbooks tied to literature. So this is continuing in that same vein with this great book called The Secret Garden Cookbook by Amy Kotler. Amy is a professional chef, caterer, and cooking-school teacher - and if you're a cookbook lover, you will truly appreciate her background in the kitchen. When this book came out, people were going crazy for the Toffee Pudding recipe that you can find on page 32. So that's just a little heads up. If you're a gardener, I'll point out that right at the beginning of the book is a beautiful picture of the Francis Hodgson Burnett Memorial Fountain. It's both a statue and a tranquil fountain filled with lily pads that depicts Mary and Dickon from The Secret Garden. It's located in Central Park in New York City, and it's just a gorgeous photo of this Memorial. Here's how Amy introduces us to The Secret Garden and the magic of food: She writes, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden is about the magic of making things come alive. Mary, Colin, and Dickon all help the forgotten secret garden to grow again. ButMary and Colin come alive, too, through hard work, friendship, and good, nourishing food.  When Mary Lennox first arrives atMisselthwaite Manor from India, she is thin, sallow, and unhealthy looking. But as she goes outside, skips rope, and works in the garden, her appetite grows. Colin, too, is sickly until he learns the secret of the garden. By the end of the novel, he is enjoying food as much as Mary. Pails of fresh milk, dough cakes with brown sugar, hearty porridge, fire-roasted potatoes-Mary, and Colin can't get enough of them! The children of The Secret Garden grew up during the reign of Queen Victoria... commonly known as the Victorian era. In those days, food took a long time to cook and serve.  Even Mrs. Sowerby, Dickon's mother, though she must feed fourteen people, manages to find a little extra food for Mary and Colin when they experience the joys of eating.   And that's what this book is all about; a hardy appreciation of good food. This book is 112 pages of fifty recipes inspired by The Secret Garden, and they're all updated for the modern kitchen and appeal to today's tastes. You can get a copy of The Secret Garden Cookbook, Newly Revised Edition by Amy Cotler, and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $10.   Botanic Spark 1905 Birth of Herbert Ernest Bates (pen name H. In his book, A Love of Flowers (1971), H.E. wrote, It is wonderful to think that one of the few unbroken links between the civilization of ancient Egypt and the civilization of today is the garden. And he also wrote, Gardens… should be like lovely, well-shaped girls: all curves, secret corners, unexpected deviations, seductive surprises, and then still more curves.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Essential Oils That Remove Negative Energy

In today's podcast, I share how to use essential oils for energy protection and my seven favorite oils. Many other oils can be used for spiritual protection; however, from personal experience, I know that my favorite 7 do the job. Essential oils are a quick fix to raise the vibrations in the air, room, vehicle, or just about any other place. I will concentrate on essential oils that remove bad energy from your home, room, office, or any indoor space. If other people use the same area, speak with them before using the oils to make sure they do not have allergies to the oils. Before using essential oils, open the windows to let the "chi" flow. Fresh air and clutter removal are always the first steps in removing negative energy. Think about it, how did you feel the last time you were in a cluttered room? Most people feel ill at ease because they do not match the energy of the clutter. How about being in a space that smells bad? OMG, the odor can be stifling and far from life-affirming. And you never know what narly creature is waiting for you to become their host. The basic formula for clearing space is to start at the entrance and walk around each room, spraying the essential oils on doorways, doorknobs, windowsills, each corner, and the middle of the room. Do this for each room in the space you are cleansing. If you are familiar with working with a pendulum, you can use it before and after using the essential oil as proof positive of your work. There is a school of thought that you have to work counterclockwise in the space. Depending on what I sense in the room, I sometimes work clockwise or counterclockwise. If you doubt, do the work and pay attention to how you feel when the work is complete. I leave the windows open when cleansing to make it easier for the negative energy to go bye/bye. You don't want them bumping into walls or going in circles trying to escape the cleansing. Opening the windows and doors allows for an easy escape. Then leave them open for an additional 15 minutes after using the essential oils. The general formula for mixing to spray essential oils is 2 ounces of grain alcohol and 25 drops of the oil. Shake well, and it is ready for use. Yes, grain alcohol like Everclear 190 proof 95% alcohol. If you cannot find Everclear, a vodka of 151 proof or 75% alcohol will also get the job done. The alcohol acts as a preservative and breaks down the essential oil allowing for a longer-lasting scent. Set your intention for the work and get going. The seven essential oils Peppermint oil is a pleasant-smelling oil that will get you out of your funk. In a room, it removes negative energy and low vibrational spirits. Do you feel as if you have ghosts in your space? Peppermint will make them run away. Peppermint is excellent for grounding you in your area and bringing you into the present time. A side benefit of peppermint is it makes you instantly feel better. After diluting with a carrier oil, you can use it on Throat, Third Eye, and Crown chakras. Lemon and all citrus fruits help remove negative energy and cleanse the air. The refreshing scent of lemon smells good, but it also sends energy with a lower-level vibe running away. If you don't have time to make a spray, a lemon cut into quarters and left in/near the center of the room will wipe out the negativity. Lemon oil is excellent as a psychic cleanser and household cleanser. Camphor - Do you like to smell Vicks vapor rub? If so, you will love Camphor. You will love Camphor even more because it effectively clears all types of negative energy and low-level vibrations. Camphor will raise your vibration and send negative entities away. Dilute with a carrier oil and apply as one would a perfume. This is an excellent oil to use in an oil burner to cut stagnant or harmful energies. If you have asthma or epilepsy or are pregnant, avoid this oil.

Nono interviews our special guest, Brandon Camphor of One Way. Brandon is a vocalist and songwriter from the DMV area. Brandon talks about his desire to be a part of a group instead of a solo artist, the path he took from performing at a dance studio to opening for leading gospel artists on tour, some artists that influence him and so much more. Jaime Perales, PhD, presents statistics, screening tools and useful resources for primary care providers for Alzheimer’s disease. The KIDs list is presented. Question of the month: Fever and Cough.Introduction: KIDs List and Cognitive Impairment in the ElderlyBy Hector Arreaza, MDToday is May 3, 2021.  In family medicine, we believe in caring for patients “from the cradle to the grave.” During this introduction, we want to inform first of the KIDs list[1] and then some updates on cognitive impairment screening in older adults[2].First, KIDs stand for Key Potentially Inappropriate Drugs in Pediatrics. It is a list of medications that are potentially inappropriate in children. It contains 67 drugs with their risks, recommendations, strength of recommendation and quality of evidence. Common meds include anti-infectives, antipsychotics, dopamine antagonists and GI agents. 85% of these meds require a prescription, and are taken by mouth, or used by parenteral route or even for external use. For example: Mineral oil, oral, carries the risk of lipid pneumonitis, recommended to avoid in patients younger than 1 year old, this recommendation is strong with low quality of evidence. For all the “abuelas” (Spanish for grandmothers) out there, listen to this: Camphor carries a risk of seizures, the recommendation is “use with caution in children.” However, the recommendation is weak and quality of evidence is low, but the concern is enough to include it on the list, in other words, use “vi-vah-pore-oo” with caution in children. I recommend you look up the KIDs list and use your clinical judgment to incorporate it into your practice. From childhood, now we go to the elderly. On February 25, 2020, the USPSTF posted their final recommendation statement regarding screening for cognitive impairment in older adults. This is a Grade I recommendation (Insufficient Evidence). It means that more research is needed to recommend for or against it. This is the same recommendation given in 2014. An article published in JAMA on the same date, Feb 25, 2020, reports that screening instruments can adequately detect cognitive impairment, however there is no evidence that this screening improves patient or caregiver outcomes or causes harm. It is still uncertain if early detection of cognitive impairment is important to provide interventions for patients or caregivers with significant clinical benefits.Jaime Perales, PhD, will present some statistics on Alzheimer’s disease, he will explain some useful tools to screen for cognitive impairment and address the issue of Alzheimer’s disease at the primary care level. This is Rio Bravo qWeek, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California. Our program is affiliated with UCLA, and it’s sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home.  Question of the Month: Fever and CoughWritten by Hector Arreaza, MD, read by Claudia Carranza, MD, and Valerie Civelli, MDThis is a 69-yo male patient, who has history of controlled hypertension. He comes to an urgent care clinic for acute onset of fever (102 F), cough, and shortness of breath which has progressively worsened over the last 3 days. He does NOT smoke tobacco, but uses recreational marijuana once a month, and drinks 1-2 beers a week. He goes to the doctor once a year for check-ups. He takes benazepril 10 mg daily for his hypertension. He does not believe in vaccines and his last shot was a tetanus shot 5 years ago. He has no surgical history. He retired as an accountant 5 years ago. Vital signs are normal except for tachycardia of 110 (his baseline is 85) and temperature of 101.5 F (38.6 C). He has bibasilar crackles on auscultation. You perform labs in clinic and he has a white count of 13.5, and a chest x-ray shows a right lower lobe consolidation. He has a negative rapid COVID-19 test. What are your top 3 differential diagnoses and what is the acute management of this patient’s condition? Let’s repeat the question: What are your top 3 differential diagnoses and what is the acute management of a 69-year-old male, non-smoker, who has fever, cough, shortness of breath, tachycardia, bibasilar crackles, elevated WBCs, a right lower lobe consolidation, and a negative rapid COVID-19 test?Send us your answer before May 7, 2021, to rbresidency@clinicasierravista.org and the best answer will win a prize!____________________________Screening for Alzheimer’s. With Jaime Perales Puchalt, PhD, and Hector Arreaza, MD Jaime Perales Puchalt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology. Formulated for FAST ABSORPTION. DIRECTIONS: Apply to affected area as needed for discomfort relief.CBDa is the mother of CBD. CBDa is raw, pure and free of solvents, combustion and toxic residue, and when processed, especially at high heat, converts to CBD, and destroys most or all the CBDa. Think of it as harvesting fresh vegetables from your back yard and cooking them at high heat----something good is always lost.Early CBDa research suggests it could deliver potent relief by selectively inhibiting an enzyme in our bodies called COX-2. Sampling-A free sample or "freebie" is a portion of food or other product (for example beauty products) given to consumers in shopping malls, supermarkets, retail stores, or through other channels (such as via the Internet). Sometimes samples of non-perishable items are included in direct marketing mailings. The purpose of a free sample is to acquaint the consumer with a new product, and is similar to the concept of a test drive, in that a customer is able to try out a product before purchasing it. She has dedicated 8 years of her life to the study of water from multiple perspectives, intertwining science, art and the connection between bodies of water and consciousness. Her latest book, 'The Secret Intelligence of Water' is about to be published and you can read more about her work with water on her website - https://www.vedaaustin.com/ Over the last century there have been huge advances in the field of water science, including the discovery of a fourth phase of water, but we haven't seen as many advances in the educational arena reflecting this. One day a month Veda donates time teaching water science and water related topics to school children aged between 8 and 12. Veda incorporates crystallography with the students, and the subsequent photos she and the children take of ice become collaborative art pieces, often used to help raise money for the school. After doing this for nearly 8 years, Veda noticed a large gap in this area of study, in fact 99% of the teachers shared that they had never thought about, let alone taught about water in such depth. The other consistent feedback Veda got from teachers was that the children were organically integrating what they learned or explored during her lesson into many other subjects of study, giving them a broader world view. Consequently, Veda was inspired to create a fun, informative and interactive educational series about water for parents, teachers and children alike. There will be a variety of modules that can be integrated into the school curriculum. For 27 years, Martha kept a journal of her work as the town healer and midwife for Hallowell, Maine. In all, Martha assisted with 816 births. Today, Martha’s marvelous journal gives us a glimpse into the plants she regularly used and how she applied them medicinally. As for how Martha sourced her plants, she raised them in her garden or foraged them in the wild. As the village apothecary, Martha found her own ingredients and personally made all of her herbal remedies. And so it was that 229 years ago today, Martha recorded her work to help her sick daughter. She wrote: "My daughter Hannah is very unwell this evening. I gave her some Chamomile & Camphor.” Today we know that Chamomile has a calming effect, and Camphor can help treat skin conditions, improve respiratory function, and relieve pain.   November 30, 1823  Today is the birthday of the German botanist Nathanael Pringsheim. Nathanael was a founder of algology or the study of algae. Nathanael’s work led to an understanding of how algae and fungi live, develop, and reproduce. In 1882, Nathanael founded the German Botanical Society.   November 30, 1835 Today is the birthday of the American writer and humorist Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain. Samuel used the garden and garden imagery to convey his wit and satire. In 1874, Samuel’s sister, Susan, and her husband built an octagonal shed for him to write in. They surprised him with it when Samuel visited their farm in upstate New York. The garden shed was perfectly situated on a hilltop overlooking the Chemung (“Sha-mung”) River Valley. As was the case with Roald Dahl, the shed was not only a spur for creativity, but it removed Samuel from the main home. Like Roald Dahl, Samuel smoked as he wrote, and his sister despised his incessant pipe smoking. In this little octagonal garden/writing shed, Samuel wrote significant sections of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, The Prince and the Pauper, A Tramp Abroad, and many other short works. And, in 1952, Samuel’s Octagonal Shed was relocated to the Elmira College (“El-MEER-ah”) campus in Elmira, New York. Today, people can visit the garden shed with student guides daily throughout the summer and by appointment in the off-season. Here are some garden-related thoughts by Samuel Langhorne Clemens, aka Mark Twain. Climate is what we expect; weather is what we get. — Mark Twain, American humorist and novelist, Climate   It was a soft, reposeful summer landscape, as lovely as a dream, and as lonesome as Sunday. — Mark Twain, American humorist and novelist, The Summer Landscape   To get the full value of joy You must have someone to divide it with. After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her. — Mark Twain, American humorist and novelist, Eve   Unearthed Words November 30, 1838 Today is the birthday of the American writer and poet Charlotte Fiske Bates. Many of her poems were about gardens or incorporated garden imagery. Although the heart is very sore from loss,   Yet there are healing powers; It eases much the burden of a cross   To cover it with flowers. Faith, hope, and love -the blossoms of the three   Help heal the hurt of our humanity. — Charlotte Fiske Bates, American writer and poet, The Healing Powers of Flowers   Of those that make our honey, it is known   That feared and beaten back, they turn and sting. While, fearlessly, if they are let alone,   In time they fly away on harmless wing. And so suspicions buzz like angry bees:  Do they torment you with their threatened stings? Oh! Let them buzz as near you as they please;  Keep quiet. They, as well as bees, have wings. — Charlotte Fiske Bates, American writer, and poet, Suspicions   As dyed in blood, the streaming vines appear,   While long and low, the wind about them grieves. The heart of autumn must have broken here   And poured its treasure out upon the leaves. — Charlotte Fiske Bates, American writer, and poet, Woodbines in October (Clematis virginiana) and similar to the Sweet Autumn Clematis   Grow That Garden Library Trees, Shrubs & Hedges for Your Home by Editors of Creative Homeowner This book came out in 2010, and the subtitle is Secrets for Selection and Care (Creative Homeowner) Over 1,000 Plant Descriptions and 550 Photos to Help You Design Your Landscape and Enhance Your Outdoor Space. As we get older, it’s best to transition to more trees, shrubs, and hedges in the garden for overall less maintenance, worry, and hassle. Select plants to improve your property's appearance and value Create a harmonious design, keeping in mind color, scale, and texture. Save money by selecting the best cultivars. Improve your soil and success rate while planting and transplanting with confidence Prune and care for your plants for extended beauty and life Trees, shrubs, and hedges are the "bones" of the garden, and designing with them is a skill that can be learned. This book is a whopping 550 pages, complete with loads of color photos and illustrations of everything you need to design a beautiful landscape with Trees, Shrubs & Hedges for Your Home. Lucy was born on Prince Edward Island, and she was almost two years old when her mother died. Like her character Ann of Green Gables, Lucy had an unconventional upbringing when her father left her to be raised by her grandparents. Despite being a Canadian literary icon and loved worldwide, Lucy’s personal life was marred by loneliness, death, and depression. Historians now believe she may have ended her own life. Yet we know that flowers and gardening were a balm to Lucy. She grew lettuce, peas, carrots, radish, and herbs in her kitchen garden. And Lucy had a habit of going to the garden after finishing her writing and her chores about the house. Today in Norval, a place Lucy lived in her adult life, the Lucy Maud Montgomery Sensory Garden is located next to the public school. The Landscape Architect, Eileen Foley, created the garden, which features an analemmatic or horizontal sundial, a butterfly and bird garden, a children's vegetable garden, a log bridge, and a woodland trail. It was Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote, “I love my garden, and I love working in it. To potter with green growing things, watching each day to see the dear, new sprouts come up, is like taking a hand in creation, I think. Just now, my garden is like faith - the substance of things hoped for.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

What would you do if something that you loved was having a severe negative impact on your health? Would you start your own company and find a better way of doing that very thing that was hurting you? That’s what Arieal (Ari) Smith-Liburd did when she discovered that the nail polish she was using was causing a severe allergic reaction that included itchy rashes and bubbles in her nails. In this episode, we learn from Suite Eleven’s founder, Ari, about the chemicals & other unsavory ingredients lurking in “regular” nail polish, why non-toxic nail polish is a better choice, and what you give up by going non-toxic (hint: nothing but the toxic ingredients). We also talk about what motivated Ari to start Suite Eleven, what influences her color choices, and how she balances her drive for perfection with taking care of herself. This inspiring conversation is about so much more than just nail polish.   Episode Recap: Interview with Arieal Smith-Liburd - 2:37, “You Want Me To Do What??” section - 34:32 Highlights: After turning 18, Ari woke up with a full-body rash, which led her down a path to figure out that she had allergies to a variety of foods and chemicals. She had to do a lot of trial & error, paying attention to what she ate & what products she used to figure out exactly what she was allergic to. Certain chemicals in “regular” nail polish are used to extend the wear & durability of the nail polish, but the chemicals can be harmful. Ari decided to start Suite Eleven because she wanted to create something that she loved while showing her siblings and community that they could have/do something that they were taught that they couldn’t have. She also wanted to show that you don’t have to give up what you love for your health. Vegan nail polish signifies that no animals or animal parts are used in creating or testing the nail polish. 10-Free means the nail polish is free of the top 10 hazardous chemicals commonly found in nail polish (Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide,  Xylene, parabens, animal by-products, and fragrance). These chemicals are known to cause things such as skin irritation, cancer, mental impairment, and fertility issues. Suite Eleven is inspired by Ari’s mom, and their shared love for getting their nails done. Non-toxic nail polish can be as vibrant and last as long as other “regular” nail polishes. Ari’s top nail care tips: Always use a base & top coat Don’t bite your nails Use cuticle oil Hydrate your hands regularly Body butter brands that Ari recommends for hydrating your hands: Terra-tory Olive & June Lush Cosmetics Ari’s tips for making changes to a healthier lifestyle: Start small Do one thing at a time Treat yourself sometimes Resources: Where to find Suite Eleven: Instagram: @suiteleven Website: www.suiteleven.com

Free Healthy Habits Checklist + Full Show Notes available at ww.valerielavignelife.com/94 Today I'm sharing some of my favourite natural tools and solutions to support healthy daily habits and rituals. I'll be sharing the products, how I use them, and also how you can get yours if you are someone who is ready to elevate your everyday health and wellness! [1:09] The products in today's episode are some of dōTERRA's most popular oils and products, and the kit they are packaged in is part of our team's annual Healthy Habits Program. Each year we run a Healthy Habits Program using these products, and a few others. Consider today a sneak peak or introduction into the program and the products it's based around.   Let's jump into the Healthy Habits Collection! This kit includes five life changing essential oils including a unique grounding blend that smells like a magical forest. It also has five supplements for foundational nutrition and health, and lastly it includes everyone's favourite natural muscle rub. This Healthy Habits Collection is available in the US and Canadian market, however I encourage purchasing from the US warehouse as it includes the fifth supplement that the Canadian warehouse does not yet have.   SHOP THE HEALTHY HABITS COLLECTION HERE   For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Valerie LaVigne. I am a Health Coach, Business Owner, and lover of life. When people ask me to help them live a healthier lifestyle, the first thing I ask them is: “How much water do you drink every day?” You would be amazed by how many of us are chronically dehydrated. You'll be even more amazed at what happens when you start drinking the correct amount of quality water your body needs daily. Yes it can be THAT SIMPLE (sometimes).   [2:50] Drink More Quality Water Drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces of water per day. If you need a reminder, there is a Water Reminder App, you can set up your own reminders to track your progress. If you're hungry between or right after a meal, it's usually because you're thirsty. Drink up! dōTERRA's citrus oils are incredible and cleansing when you add them to your water! They have a chemical constitution called limonene in them. Lemon comes in the Healthy Habits kit, but you could also use Wild Orange, Green Mandarin, or my favourites: Grapefruit and Tangerine! Some other popular oils to add to water are Smart + Sassy and Peppermint!  I add 1-2 drops of oil per Litre of water. Any time you're adding oils to your water, you must use your glass or stainless steel water bottle. No plastic! You can add on additional citrus oils to your purchase if you like.   [4:23] Now the true foundation to health and wellness is nutrition, which is why I take dōTERRA's Lifelong Vitality Pack aka LLV daily. Hello amazing daily supplements! After a few weeks of consistently taking these natural solutions, you may notice more energy, less pain, glowing skin, and stronger nails! I've noticed so many different areas of my body improving after taking these supplements, like less sugar cravings and more mental energy. This package of three supplements was designed to be the perfect compliment of a balanced wholefood diet with the nutrient equivalent of 12 servings of fruits and veggies in every serving. LLV Testimonials The first of these three powerhouse supplements is the Microplex VMz This is a complete vitamin mineral. It's “complete” because the body is able to digest it AND use all the vitamins. The body treats it, absorbs it, and eliminates it just like it does with food. Microplex VMz solves the absorption issues of vitamins and minerals in other supplements by using a glycoprotein matrix to help the body absorb vitamins, and chelated minerals (meaning the minerals bound to an amino acid). Basically it makes the supplement recognizable as food nutrients. Some of the many vitamins and minerals in this supplement are: vitamins A, D, E, C and B, and minerals calcium, magnesium, and zinc. The second supplement in the LLV Pack is xEO Mega Say hello to the ONLY omega supplement I have ever finished an entire container of. I used to dislike fish and would try to supplement it with omegas and I honestly tried them all. The fish burps, the chalky tablets, the liquid versions, the flavoured versions - GROSS. ALL OF THEM. I eventually just started eating fish because I hated the supplements I was trying… UNTIL dōTERRA's xEO Mega!  It's combination of sea and land based Omega 3's - which are crucial for our brains, and unique blend of essential oils (clove, frankincense, thyme, cumin, wild orange, peppermint, ginger, caraway, and german chamomile) add antioxidant protection - and the best part. No nasty burps! This supplement is also available in the vegan package, however not part of the Healthy Habits Kit. And finally the Alpha CRS+ A super powerful antioxidant that also gives us energy at the cellular level = natural energy for consistently feeling good :) No energy drink sugar crashes after those garbage (fake) energy boosters. The Alpha CRS+ stimulates overall cellular health which protects our DNA from being attacked by damaging free radicals.   [7:54] TerraZyme This supplement supports healthy digestion and metabolism of enzyme-deficient, processed foods. You want to take 1 capsule with each meal, possibly two if your meal is mostly cooked or processed so that the food nutrients get properly absorbed. TerraZyme also supports the conversion of food nutrients to cellular energy and promotes comfort for mild food intolerances. It contains a proprietary blend of 10 active whole-food enzymes that help your body digest complex carbs, fats, sugars, fiber, and proteins!   [8:31] PB Assist+ Probiotic This supplement is available in the US version of the kit, however it is not yet available in Canada. Canadian dōTERRA current or new members can access the US kit through the US warehouse. What I love about this probiotic is it has both pro AND pre biotic fibers that are double encapsulated for better absorption in the needed areas of the GI tract. They also look really cool and a little alien-like from other supplements you have have used or seen. AND you don't have to keep them in the fridge! Which is amazing because I always forgot to take supplements I had to keep in the fridge. PB Assist+ promotes balance and proliferation of beneficial bacteria. It helps to maintain healthy intestinal microflora balance. The way I like to explain is, is that this keeps the flowers in your belly garden happy and healthy.   [9:46] Daily healthy habits are not only what you're putting into your body, but also how you are moving your body. Daily movement is key in creating a healthy lifestyle, as I always say, “a body in motion, stays in motion.” Getting into a movement practice is a lot easier than it sounds. Most people overthink or over complicate starting a new workout routine or fitness schedule, but really it's super simple, and the key is finding an exercise you love! Personally, I really enjoy lifting weights at the gym. I also love yoga and pilates. I do not do well in Zumba, but once in a while I'll pop into a spin class. Since I'm not very consistent with spin, it's a little add on when I can, and I focus on getting to the gym instead. Now that we have chosen our favourite workout style, we can create a realistic routine. Take a peek at your calendar and see if there are any gaps where you can schedule a workout in. Start with 2-3 times per week.  If this is new for you, I recommend investing in a personal trainer, or signing up for group classes in advance. Keeping your schedule the same every week will help you make your workouts a habit. Be kind to yourself and do your best. Remember, you're just starting out! If your body isn't used to lots of movement and/or exercise, your muscles will probably start telling you about. Which is why I LOVE dōTERRA's Deep Blue Rub! The Deep Blue Rub is a blend of different essential oils including: Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus blending together in a convenient and soothing cream. This rub provides a comforting sensation of cooling and warmth to problem areas. You can apply this to your feet and knees before or after exercise. My boyfriend loves this rub before because he says it helps him to activate his muscles. I enjoy the rub post because I like the cooling and soothing sensation. It's also great when you massage it into the neck and shoulders after a long day of work to ease muscle tension.   [12:22] Now I mentioned the Healthy Habits Collection also contains different essential oils and essential oil blends. If you've been listening to the Women's Empowerment Podcast, you'll know that I teach a lot about essential oils and how to use them, so I will include those previous episodes in the show notes for you if you want to go back and re-listen. Or if you're new to the show and you want some more information, everything you need can be found in the episodes listed below: E90: Q&A: dōTERRA & Essential Oils E88: Elevate Your Daily Routine with Essential Oils E80: Q&A: My Monthly Wellness Boxing's  E76: Green Cleaning with Essential Oils E49: Raising Your Vibration with Essential OilsE35: The Simplest Ways to Use Your Essential Oils E32: Summer Essentials to Optimize Your Health E24: Natural Solutions: Informed Self Care E23: Natural Solutions: Reduce Synthetic Exposure E22: Natural Solutions: Rest & Stress Management E21: Natural Solutions: Nutrition & Exercise E09: Top 10 Essential Oils Master Class E02: Hormone Essentials   [12:52] Let's talk about The Oils that come in the kit! The first is Lavender. Most people have heard of, and could probably recognize this scent. What you may not know is that Lavender essential oil is known as “The Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils because it has SO MANY USES! I will include more information about lavender in the Healthy Habits Checklist freebie available in the show notes page for you. One of the most common uses of lavender is for its calming effect. You can add a few drops to your diffuser before bed, or place a drop on your pillow as part of your evening ritual. This helps with the transition from a busy day to a restful night.   Lemon is also part of the Healthy Habits Collection. It is one of my most used oils because I love the smell so much, and it's great for making household cleaners! There are heaps of uses for lemon oil that I have put in the Healthy Habits Checklist (Big Yellow Button Below) but my most favourite lemon oil hack is when I need to get something sticky off a surface! For example a price tag that leaves goo on a new flower pot. Or when you miss the mail person and the sticker they leave on the window leaves guck when you take it off. SImply add 5-8 drops of lemon EO onto a piece of paper towel and gently rub until the goo is gone! You might need a few more drops depending on the stickiness of the goo.   The “King of Essential Oils” is Frankincense and a small bottle of this oil is included in the Healthy Habits Collection. This oil is POWERFUL! It has many uses including soothing and warming the body, as well as helping glowing skin, and balancing mood. This oil is a wonderful companion to lavender in the diffuser before bed, or with lemon in the diffuser throughout the day for a fresh and warm mood boosting scent.   The Healthy Habits Collection comes with two different essential oil blends. The first is On Guard. This is also known as dōTERRA's Protective Blend as it was designed to support immunity and fight harmful germs. I use On Guard and Lemon together in all purpose cleaning spray as it is safe and great for green cleaning kitchen surfaces. It's wonderful in the diffuser and has a warm and spicy aroma.   Balance Blend is the other of the essential oil blends in the Healthy Habits Collection. This is also known as the Grounding Blend and it was the first of dōTERRA's oils that I truly fell in love with. You see, the reason why I got into essential oils in the first place was because I was searching for a holistic approach to coping with anxiety. I started with the aromatherapy oil collection and really loved those oils, however something shifted deeply within me when I was introduced to Balance blend. I'm not sure what it was, but I'll call it love at first smell! I diffused this all day every day, and I would put a drop on the bottoms of my feet morning and night. It was an absolutely life-changing ritual for me that really helped me with my anxious feelings. I am still very much in love with this blend and I always recommend it to friends who are looking to find some relaxation and stability. It's so simple to incorporate and very gentle and supportive. I'll share more information about this blend and the other oils in the Healthy Habits Checklist (Big Yellow Button Below)   [16:33] If you're listening to this podcast episode and you're thinking, “OH EM GEE this all sounds amazing and I would LOVE to get these natural tools into my home!” You can go to the show notes page and at the bottom you will see a link with information on how to join our essential oil community. When you purchase this collection through my link you will be sent the products I talked about today. Please send me an email with a picture or copy of your receipt so that I can support you in the products you purchased. You can refer back to this episode and the Healthy Habits Checklist (Big Yellow Button Below) as a guide for the specific oils and supplements I discussed today. Drums of Autumn Chapters 22-23 Week 13 “Perspectives on Protection”   Summary: Roger finds a horrifying historical fact. A sin of omission is not a lie, is it? Fraser's Ridge is growing with new tenants. Claire rides into a storm. Her traitorous horse leads her astray. A friendly ghost visits Claire's resting place. Rollo proves himself a worthy hound. Jamie, Young Ian, and the dog find Claire well. They find a visitor upon return to the Ridge. Duncan greets them at the door. Jamie tends to Claire. He was frightened Claire was dead.  Jamie puts Claire to bed. Duncan has news to share. Claire makes a startling discovery.   Inside the Chapters: Chapter 22: Spark of an Ancient Flame Oxford, September 1970 Roger's research turns up a horrifying “fact” about Jamie and Claire. He cannot easily bring himself to believe what he's reading. A notice in a newspaper says they died in a house fire on February 13, 1776, in North Carolina (p411, Nook). All the pieces point to this being THE JAMIE AND CLAIRE. One blessing is the assurance that Claire had found Jamie when she left Roger and Brianna that Feast of All Saints morning almost two years prior. Roger liked and loved Claire; he hopes the years were happy before the fire (pg412, Nook). Roger feels newly orphaned as he processes what he's read. He believes he cannot tell Brianna this piece of information. He knows she will be newly devastated. Roger wants to destroy all evidence of this revelation. He takes the page from the book. He has no idea how many of these books are in circulation, but Brianna knows how to research and if this is the only one, he can keep the information to himself. Roger is running the scenarios through his head. Roger doesn't believe history can be changed. Brianna might.  He remembers she asked him “How do you mourn a time-traveler?” This would be the vehicle to allow her to mourn if it wasn't for Craigh na Dun being available for transit services. The mere thought of the stone circle gives Roger a cold chill. He shivers at the horror and remembers the day Claire went through (p415, Nook). Roger and Brianna had been unconscious and woke on the ground in the late afternoon. The impact of the event on them had been physical and psychological. Imagine how terrible it must be for the person going through the stones. When Brianna awoke, Roger promised to take care of her. He vowed to protect her. Does this remind you of someone else? He would do anything to save her from pain, grief, and those awful stones. Back home, Roger ponders the timeline. Brianna might too and could calculate the opportunity to go back and try to change things since the time jump is 202 years back. Could he convince her the past couldn't be changed? She's a determined and fierce sort of person. I don't think he has a chance of convincing her to do nothing. He does not want to lose her before he ever gets the opportunity to be with her. He plans to dissuade her from looking into the past any longer. He wonders if it is okay to suppress the information (p417, Nook). He tears up the page from the 1906 book. His decision is made. This is a pivotal moment of insight into Roger and his motivations. It's also a point of climax for his character and how he develops from here. How might this one decision cascade into a myriad of problems or good? I don't think he should hide it from her. He could help her make any decision based on trust and love, not only protection. Brianna is an adult and is tremendously strong-willed. Her father IS Jamie Fraser. Chapter 23: The Skull Beneath the Skin Summer 1768 Fraser's Ridge This giant chapter opens with Claire lightly recounting the past eight months on Fraser's Ridge. Duncan had brought 20 Ardsmuir men and their families to settle the land. Her doctoring skills are required again. She's even catching babies as part of her duties. Her fame becomes known to the whole area, and she finds herself traveling all around the thirty square mile mountainous region. She even makes occasional visits with Young Ian to Anna Ooka to see Nayawenne. In the beginning, Jamie or Young Ian would go with Claire for safety, but as time wore on, she ventured out solo by horse to tend those in need. She was adding more cases to Dr. Rawling's casebook. Though Claire never asks her patients for payment, something is always offered and gratefully received. Many of her patients don't speak English or French, but body language proves to be enough for her to get the jobs done.  Now that Claire has caught us up, it's August 1768. She's been at a lengthy delivery at the Mueller's for a few days and is trying to ride through a heavy storm back to Fraser's Ridge. Claire describes it as a harrowing task. The creek is rising quickly. Claire's horse swims across to the other side. Claire is taking the risk because she doesn't want to stay several more days with the entire Mueller family. She wants to go home. The language is incredibly descriptive in this section. It makes me a bit anxious reading about the storm. I don't want Claire riding in it. As Claire rides away, she thinks over the three-day labor and delivery she attended with 18-year old Petronella Mueller. It was a slow and difficult process, but she did it. She and her 17-year old husband now have a daughter. Claire fondly thinks of the delicious meals during her time with the extended Mueller family. Claire moves on to Jamie and Young Ian. She hopes they fed themselves decently and took good care while she was away (p421, Nook). The terrain is getting slick and muddy in the heavy downpour. Claire reassures the horse. Apparently, he hasn't a name yet. Jamie says it will be revealed in good time. The horse comes to a stop as the trail is washed out on that side of the mountain. Claire must find a place to crossover for safety. At this point, she thinks she would turn back if the creek wasn't flooded. She found a place to get through and cross over to the other side of the hill before finding the trail again. The wind lessens, but it is cold and still raining. Claire describes the landscape, oak, red-berried mountain ash, and blackberry brambles. She distracts herself with thoughts of her pantry and what to make for dinner when she gets back to Fraser's Ridge. Hail starts to pelt her, and she finds shelter under a chestnut tree. Here's a link to the most common trees in North Carolina. Claire talks to the horse to keep him calm. Then the lightning starts. Horses do not ever like lightning. Though the hail storm passed, the rain continued with roaring thunder and lightning (p424, Nook). The horse had thrown Claire down a 30-foot cliff. The wind is knocked out of her, but she's surprisingly unharmed, except for a banged up knee. The horse had stopped abruptly at the edge. Claire yells at the horse, then tries to get up. She cannot go back up the cliff face. She starts to worry. No one knows where she is, and she has no food, horse, or weapons. She is determined to find shelter (p425, Nook). She finds a place under a fallen tree (p426, Nook). Just last Christmas Claire had to find Jamie in the snow. At least she knew a general sense of where he was. He has no idea where she might be because she had to go off trail.  She sleeps after placing her wet shoes next to her. She has fitful dreams of childbirth. Frank and Jamie are both present. She continues to wake and sleep. She wakes a final time to the smell of smoke. A lightning strike had hit a nearby balsam poplar tree. Claire cannot find her shoes, but she heads toward the warmth of the smoldering tree anyway. The tree provides her much needed warmth (p427, Nook). Now she aches and her empty belly rumbles. The horse is nowhere to be seen. Claire's clothing is near dry, though she wishes to stay warm, they're too many predators who could harm her, so she returns to the shelter. She crawls in and doesn't find her moccasins; she finds a complete human skull (p428, Nook). She wonders how the man arrived there. Was his death by violence? She concludes since the Cherokee and the Tuscarora bury their dead, someone must have disliked this man very much. She also wonders where the rest of him is. She finds a stone with a carving on it near the skull, but the rest of the remains are not there. Claire feels somehow comforted by the skull (p429, Nook). This scene brings the memory of Fr. Fogden's coconut and his sheep skull collection. Claire names the man Yorick and for some reason thinks he was an Indian and not a European. She recites various poetry to him. She recites Ode to the West Wind insofar as she can remember.   I am curious why Diana Gabaldon chose this poem for Claire to say. At the end of her recitation, Claire sees a light coming toward her from the ridge above (p430, Nook). She holds the skull tightly in her hands. She knows the thing coming toward her would be unaffected by weapons.  The light seems to float in the air with a steady pace of a man walking. She is terrified inside of her hiding place. She wants to run, and she sweats. She knows what St. Elmo's Fire looks like, this is not that nor is it marsh gas. She sees the specter (p431, Nook). Though hidden, the ghost knows she is there. Claire stays still, and he looks directly where she is through the dark. His torch is steady and soundless without the wood being consumed. She calls it a corpse candle. Claire realizes she is not scared any longer (p432, Nook). Claire experiences her surroundings anew. The four elements of earth, air, fire, and water are present, like in the Shelley poem. She asks what he wants (p432, Nook). Claire sits and cradles the skull. She decides to stay put until morning. She is cold and hungry, but not scared. She thinks about what happened and can make no sense of it. She finally falls into an uneasy and dream filled sleep (p433, Nook). Does her dream tell of how the man died? Or is she processing through cold and hunger? She wakes and sleeps again. Again, she dreams of death, pursuit, and blood.    Something brushes her skin, and a pair of yellow eyes are staring into hers. It's ROLLO (p434, Nook)! Jamie grabs her out of the hiding place and checks her for injury. She breathes in the smell of him. She starts to cry from the relief of being found. He picks her up and carries her toward the stream (p434, Nook). Young Ian finds the skull. Jamie tenses in response (p435, Nook). Claire drinks the Brandywine and trembles all over. Jamie asks how long she's been there. Claire explains what happened and says the horse's name is Judas. She asks how they found her (p435, Nook). Claire doesn't understand how Rollo tracked her down. Jamie asks her where she lost her shoes. She points to the lightning ravaged tree (p435, Nook). Rollo couldn't be calmed, so Jamie had Young Ian let him out in case he had gone completely mad. Her shoes were on the doorstep. Rollo ran looking for an intruder. Jamie and Young Ian searched the area around the cabin, but there was no one. Rollo came back to her shoes and ran off tracking the scent. Jamie puts the shoes on her frozen feet (p436, Nook). Young Ian is proud of Rollo. Claire ponders the fact if Rollo could track the scent to her, someone had to have worn her shoes and walked to Fraser's Ridge to place them on the doorstep to be found. Young Ian and Jamie saw nothing along the way, but Jamie looks exhausted and drawn. He had been worried stiff. Jamie and Young Ian take turns carrying Claire to where the horses are. He continues to ply her with a drink (p437, Nook). She is getting quite inebriated. Rollo is too interested in the skull. Jamie wants to know what Claire plans on doing “with Prince Charming?” Should they bury him and if so how? Claire thinks the man was a pagan and shows the stone she found alongside the skull (p438, Nook). Young Ian explains his mother Jenny's thoughts on opals and how they take on the aspect of their owner. Collectively they decide to keep the large opal because of its worth. Claire wants to show it to Nayawenne so that she can decipher the carvings. Nearing the horses, Claire feels too drunk to walk to them, so Jamie and Young Ian go to bring the horses to her (p439, Nook).     They arrive home in the late afternoon. Claire is cold, wet, lightheaded, and starving. She is viewing everything through a haze of unreality. She thinks the smoke coming from the chimney is a hallucination. Then she realizes it's real (p440, Nook). Claire's horse, Judas is in the penfold without his saddle, alongside an unfamiliar horse. It must be a friend because the goat's been milked, and the animals have been fed. Duncan Innes opened the cabin's front door (p440, Nook). Jamie is trying to get Claire into the cabin to bed. She insists on a bath first (p441, Nook). Jamie sends Duncan and Young Ian to do a task so that he can wash Claire properly. He must undress her because she's so stiff and unable to do so herself. He sits her on a stool, feeds her some stale bannocks, and gathers all the necessary supplies. He washes her feet first. She's in heaven. He eyes her seriously bruised and swollen knee (p442, Nook). He sounds angry while they talk. He is mad because it scared him that she could have been dead. He continues to argue with her. Claire is baffled (p443, Nook). That's how most people act when they have been terrified a loved one is hurt or dead. Claire offers him to scold her in Gaelic, so she'll only understand some of it. She ignores him until she hears the things he would like to do to her (p444, Nook). I wouldn't like being talked to that way in any language. Claire is certainly understanding. Cleaned, warmed, and relaxed he sneakily rubs in the ointment of peppermint and camphor to her chest. It turns out he does it to keep her from getting ill. She explains the theory of germs to him again. He's not totally convinced (p445, Nook). Jamie feels too good in Claire's arms for her simply to go to bed. She rubs on him and holds onto his bum. He tries to tell her, no, but she is insistent (p446, Nook). He's losing the battle. This reminds me of her insisting on sex in Voyager when she was fevered. A little while later, as she stares into a cup of barley crowdie (I cannot find a reference or recipe for this), she remembers a story of the Earl of Montrose saved after a battle by ingesting something similar. She thanks, Young Ian for making it for her and asks him to go out to hunt for a squirrel or other animal for dinner. He's delighted to go hunting. Apparently, he and Jamie haven't been eating well while she was gone.  Claire is highly relaxed in bed. Jamie had done a proper job of warming her up and thoroughly released her tension. He is not a candidate for hunting today. Camphor and peppermint would easily be scented by the animals. Jamie left Claire to sleep while he spoke to Duncan. The sight of her casebook as she looks around the room reminds her she hasn't posted the details of Mueller's birth. Her dizzy head quickly moves on to thinking about a hearty meat broth for dinner. She does hope Young Ian catches something. She decides to get up and pour the barley stuff back into the pot. She eyes the damp barley bag and moves to spread the barley to dry so it won't rot. This is every woman's thought when she starts a task, sees another task, then another. She hears Jamie and Duncan talking about the horse. Jocasta purchased the horse for Duncan. Jamie is wondering about the purpose of his aunt gifting it to Duncan (pp449, Nook). This is an interesting development. Duncan changes the subject to those of men who could settle on Fraser's Ridge. Duncan brings up planting season, and Jamie continues to be sharp (p449, Nook). Duncan changes the subject again. Jocasta has sent a bottle of whisky for Jamie. Jamie apologizes to Duncan for his harsh tones and accepts the offer of a dram or two. Duncan accepts the apology, and they walk together. Claire watches from the window. She thinks what life would be like for one-armed Duncan had Jamie not found a place for him. Jamie did find him, and the Colonies are a second chance at life. The choice between a cooper and a farmer is not clear-cut. So far 20 Ardsmuir men are under Jamie's sponsorship on Fraser's Ridge. Claire recalls, Jamie borrowing money from several men he knew and gambled enough winnings to quadruple the amount. He proceeded to pay the men back with interest and had extra left over for his use. Claire put him to bed after his three-night adventure. She watched him sleep (p451, Nook). Fergus and Marsali with baby Germaine lived a mile away in their cabin. Claire loved having them around to help ease her heart as it longs for Brianna.  Claire sits down at the desk to record the labor and delivery. She intermingles the dream of Brianna she had while sleeping under the tree and the true events of Petronella's delivery. Brianna had been born in the caul (p452, Nook). There are many beliefs surrounding babies born this way. I have the special privilege of catching two babies en caul. Claire cannot think of any special powers Brianna has from her birth. Claire adds a sketch of the baby to her charting. Though competent to document medical occurrences, Claire is not an artist like Brianna. Claire's mama's heart is missing her daughter. She thinks about Jocasta having no living children to leave her legacy. Claire stares out the window as twilight rises (p453, Nook). This is a time we find Claire in throughout the books. I wonder what she's connecting to within the space between light and dark. At this moment, she misses Brianna but doesn't want her in this dangerous place.  The charting notes are finished, and Claire longs for bed, but dinner needs to be made. She picks up the skull finding beauty in it and has a flashback to Master Raymond's back room filled with skulls and bones from many types of animals. She hears Master Raymond's voice in her head (p453, Nook). She wonders if the skull summoned the ghost of the Indian man she met. She examines the skull again noticing the teeth are shattered on one side, but well intact on the other. She notices the wear and tear on the teeth; then she turns it over to examine the molars (p454, Nook). I would get the chills too at finding fillings in a skull in the 18th century. Who was he? He was a fellow traveler no doubt. Claire immediately shows Jamie her discovery. They surmise there must be another stone circle nearby.  Jamie will bury him after dinner. Speaking of dinner, Jamie contends they can eat the leftover barley concoction. Claire refuses outright. Jamie agrees. Claire tells him the rest of the barley needs to be spread to dry. He takes up the sack. As he's getting to the door, he asks Claire why she doesn't think the Indian was a Christian. She cannot answer the question. Jamie responds, “Aye, well. We'll give him the benefit o' the doubt.” Holy chapter batman! This could have been two chapters. So much action and discovery. Who was the apparition? Why did he help Claire? What does the stone mean? When did he travel from and why? What is Duncan up to taking a gift from Aunt Jocasta? I do love Claire needing to sexually communicate with Jamie to ground herself once safely back at the cabin. She needs his physical presence to feel secure and well. This chapter has conflict, flashback, figures of speech, figurative language, imagery, and plot. There are multiple threads of storylines being eluded to. The literary devices are leading to resolutions in the future. What's Coming up? Chapters 24 and 25 Drums of Autumn (DOA). J Edler had worked in Human Resources for years but chronic migraines made it impossible for her to continue in a corporate environment. She started a new career in Real Estate so she could work from home and have more flexibility. Migraines continued. Then she discovered power of essential oils. Her story is inspiring and relatable. About J Edler Over the years, I have dealt with occasional head tension. I had been looking for natural alternatives to provide relief, as well as something natural that could support my health. I tried a few things, but nothing seemed to really soothe this tension. In October 2014, we were introduced to dōTERRA CPTG Essential Oils – and primarily Deep Blue Soothing Blend. This blend has Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus essential oils. One night, while I was dealing with some minor head tension, I decided to try this blend-what have I got to lose? I rubbed it all over my back, should, neck, back of my scull and got back in bed. Imagine my surprise when 10 minutes later, I found relief! The same thing happened the next day. That’s when my husband and I realized we needed to get much closer to these oils. We purchased a 10-oil kit (which basically has everything to support a healthy, natural lifestyle) and started sharing. We have been using the oils ever sense. I feel healthier than ever. My life has been changed and we love nothing more than sharing the oils…and my story! We have made it our mission to share these oils with anyone –and everyone- who we meet! It is our belief that we do not sell oils..we provide solutions!
