We're kicking off "Kinda Romantic Movie Month" with the highly requested animated movie -THE SWAN PRINCESS. We're defending Rothbart - a soft spoken magician, dedicated to overthrowing a corrupt monarchy, and ripping into one of the most idiotic princes ever to grace the screen. Plus why being turned into a swan wouldn't be all that bad. Produced by Andrew Ivimey as part of The From Superheroes Network. I thought we were done with the Swan Princess series for a bit, but it turns out the siren song of the first movie was too hard to resist. So we're journeying back 30 years in the past to watch the very first Swan Princess series. How does this film hold up? And more importantly, what juicy Swan Princess lore will we re-discover? Join us as we discuss among other things our childhood nostalgia for this movie, Rothbart being the best villain the series had to offer, and the unexpected surprise of Lorenzo Trudgealong.

Jonathan Rothbart's illustrious career in VFX includes credits on everything from Men In Black to Superman Returns and The Predator. He was a founding member of John Knoll's Rebel Mac Unit at ILM, he established The Orphanage, where he delivered the HUD shots for Iron Man, and then became a sought-after VFX supervisor for movies including Deadpool and John Wick: Chapter 4. In this in-depth podcast, Jonathan tells Chris some of the amazing stories from his big-screen adventures, including how adding a small addition to a Star Wars Episode I starfighter got him in big trouble, how he got through one of Hellboy's trickiest shots, and how After Earth's production took him on helicopter rides and mountainous hikes.
Before creating Raise Playspace, Amanda was an educator with a degree in Early Childhood and 12 years of teaching experience. Working in public schools and nonprofit early intervention centers, she understood the importance of support for both children and their families. After leaving the classroom to raise her own children, she quickly realized the resources and support she was seeking were few and far between. She set out to make a place for children to learn through play and for parents to catch their breath and know they are not alone. Amanda believes that by connecting with each other and our children, we can feel more grounded, empowered, and supported. Her hope is that Raise feels like home and a breath of fresh air. She can't wait to meet you there. Join Amanda Rothbart, owner of Raise Playspace, during this raw conversation where she shares her experience of how being a new parent and SAHM led her to want to open a community resource and space for families to gather. She shares the realities of new motherhood, opening up about how her expectations of what she thought it would be didn't always seem to align with how it really was. Amanda vulnerably talks about the sacrifices we make as moms, the pull between deciding to stay home or return to work, and the emotions and challenges that often arise during those first early years. Amanda has learned that stepping out of your comfort zone to connect with others is how new friendships are created and true community is cultivated. Raise Playspace is located in Scarborough, ME and offers several workshops, classes, and groups that are geared for both children and their caregivers, offering an inclusive space to play, learn, and grow together. With John Wick: Chapter 4, the sleeper franchise reaches a violent crescendo, peppering the rogue assassin's globe-trotting bone-crunching fights with jaw-dropping plot twists. This week, the film's Production VFX Supervisor Janelle Croshaw Ralla, and Prep and On-Set VFX Supervisor Johnathan Rothbart join Chris for a spoiler-free discussion of the movie. Janelle and Jonathan talk about working with director Chad Stahelski, who takes a meticulous, frame-by-frame approach to filmmaking and prefers to work in camera and on location over bluescreen or virtual production sets. They reveal the feats of stamina and endurance performed by star Keanu Reeves, share how to hit someone with a car or set them on fire without hurting him, and discuss the creative decisions behind the film's incredible 1,500 invisible VFX shots.

A decade ago, I saw a show when I was in college that left an impact on me. After that show my college girlfriend and I bought a CD from the singer we'd seen. His name is Peter Rothbart, and his album "You Are What You Dream" has been in my music library ever since. Every so often over the past ten years I have listened to that album all the way through and admired the song-writing. So I got in contact with Peter and asked him to be on my show! Join us as we discuss the album "You Are What You Dream" and some of Peter's other music. The importance of compassion and empathy are often under appreciated when it comes to studying conflict due to the focus often being solely on the root causes of conflict. However, human beings have the capacity to be compassionate and empathetic. So what causes some people to be in tune with these positive emotions and what causes some people to ignore these emotions? In a special George Mason University Carter School Peace Week episode of the Think Peace Podcast, our host Colette Rausch sits down with Carter School Professor and head of the Transforming the Mind for Peace Lab, Dr. Daniel Rothbart, to discuss emotional intelligence, the neuroplasticity of the brain, and the role that moral cognition plays in the field of peacebuilding.

Colin's career began when he scored a role on the 1993 reality TV show, The Living Soap. The series focussed on 6 university students sharing a house in Manchester. “The first step of moral deliberation is to realize that ‘I don’t know exactly what the suffering is of people who I cannot see’, and listen, listen, listen. Discussion and storytelling are key elements of conflict prevention, and we can do this as a part of a moral awakening – an awakening to acquire a vision of something that we never have seen. Have the courage to be humble and recognize that we don’t know about everyone around us and we might be wrong in our preconceptions.” – Dr. RothbartOur society is faced with a multitude of ethical dilemmas stemming from the COVID-19 crisis, from the loss of life, economic recession, needs of healthcare workers, and social disconnection. In this week’s episode, Dr. Gopin interviews Dr. Dan Rothbart, professor of conflict analysis and resolution at the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University and co-director of the Program on Prevention of Mass Violence. Dr. Rothbart assesses the current state of politicization of the COVID crisis and outlines an ethical process for a moral discussion and moral thinking. By listening to the suffering of others and learning about the different experiences around us, we can reach a state of balance to meet the needs of others with our own involvement. Humility is the path to wisdom. For Saoli's HalloweenMonth2k17 pick, we watched the extremely rape-y 1981 Japanese anime version of "Swan Lake". It's not so much a cute little romp as it is an allegory for sexual assault and the everlasting oppression of women. We also talk about Harvey Weinstein and the powerful sexual predator who's currently running the U.S. into the ground. And the talking squirrels! Yay!
Hold on to your pants. Saoli's suppressed childhood trauma is about to be foolishly unearthed by our upcoming movie pick. This creepy Japanese anime (yeah, we went there!) has everything: a captive princess, an evil sorcerer, and talking squirrels who fall in love. It's horrific.
Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give (W.W. Norton & Company) In July of 2015, the New York Times “Modern Love” column published Ada Calhoun’s essay “The Wedding Toast I’ll Never Give,” a strikingly honest rumination on the true challenges—and joys—of marriage. The essay was wildly popular: it stayed in the most-emailed list for a week, inspired hundreds of comments, and became one of the top 50 stories of the year for the entire newspaper. In Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give, Calhoun builds off of that first essay to provide a funny (but not flip), smart (but not smug) take on the institution of marriage. Weaving intimate moments from her own married life with frank insight from experts, clergy, and friends, she upends expectations of total marital bliss to present a realistic—but ultimately optimistic—portrait of what marriage is really like. There will be fights, there will be existential angst, there may even be affairs; sometimes, you’ll look at the person you love and feel nothing but rage. Despite it all, Calhoun contends, staying married is easy: just don’t get divorced. Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give offers bracing straight-talk to the newly married and honors those who have weathered the storm. This exploration of modern marriage is at once wise and entertaining, a work of unexpected candor and literary grace. Praise for Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give "What a witty, sexy, surprising testimony to the institution of marriage! It's the best essay collection I've read in a long time, just astoundingly honest and insightful about what marriage really means. And I say that as someone who has been married 20 years."—Karen Abbott, New York Times-bestselling author of Sin in the Second City and Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy "This unflinchingly honest, astutely balanced probe of a most perplexing institution asks all the right questions. It sets up a conversation with the reader, who is challenged to reflect at each point, choosing between 'No, that's not me' and 'How did she know that?' Most of the time, she knows."—Phillip Lopate, Author of The Art of the Personal Essay “This really spoke to me. It’s a beautiful love letter to what marriage is. Ada Calhoun seems like she’d be a ball to hang out with. Marriage: not so bad, guys.”—Kathryn Hahn, actress (Transparent, Crossing Jordan) “Ada Calhoun has written the definitive meditation on marriage in all of its mystery and imperfection. It should be required reading for anyone considering it, and highly recommended for those who want to be reminded of why they did it in the first place.”—Molly Ringwald “Brutally honest, hilarious and unsentimental -- but never unkind-- this is a book for anyone who has ever had a thought (good or bad) about the institution of marriage. I devoured this gem in one sitting. I want to marry this book.”—Susannah Cahalan, New York Times-bestselling author of Brain on Fire “A warm, tart, corrective to the persistent conviction that a wedding is the neat end of a love story.”—Rebecca Traister, New York Times-bestselling author of All the Single Ladies “Ada Calhoun is the friend we all need-- the one who lets us behind the curtain of her good marriage to help us better understand our own. She’s smart, funny, and best of all, willing to bare all.”—Emma Straub, New York Times-bestselling author of Modern Lovers Calhoun’s first book, St. Marks Is Dead, was named a New York TimesEditor’s Choice and a Boston Globe Best Book of 2015. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and son. Yes, it’s me – Marc Hershon – your host and found object for Epi139 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. This is an installment of Succotash Chats, where we focus on talking with a soundcaster, or a comedian, or a comedian/soundcaster, or – in this case – a magazine publisher/editor/writer/soundcaster. Speaking of found objects, our guest is Davy Rothbart, the creator of Found magazine and, as of a couple of months ago, the Found soundcast as well. (You may have noticed that I’ve been using the “soundcast” word a lot already. Our grass roots campaign to shift from using podcast to soundcast is slowly taking off — you’ll even hear our guest Davy Rothbart mention that he’ll back our play and start using it.) Davy is a really interesting guy and I enjoyed talking with him and getting the backstory on how he decided to start the magazine and how it's opened up his life by getting all of these odd little notes and other found bits of flotsam that people send him. He also shares a few of his favorite "foundities" with us during the course of our chat. ALSO THIS EPISODE We have a double shot of our Burst O' Durst segment, courtesy of political comic and social commentator Will Durst. During the Tweetsack segment I play a clip from the 100th epi of Drew Michael's I Might Be Wrong soundcast, only because his PR folks neglected to send me a free copy of his comedy album that they wanted me to plug. And we have a commercial from our sponsor Henderson's Pants for their ever-popular Drifter Chinos. LIVE APPEARANCES There are just a few days left before my live appearance with the Spaghetti Jam 40th Year Reunion Improv Comedy Show. Tickets are going fast but there are still some left, so if you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, September 11th – 9/11, that’s right — we’re at the Throckmorton Theatre in downtown Mill Valley. Such a GREAT lineup of performers that are turning out for this - people who really lit the fuse for what we know as improvisational comedy today: Terry McGovern, Gil Christner, Diane Amos, Debi Durst, Michael Bossier, Denis Egan, Robin Eurich, Andy Goldberg, Rodney Sheriff, John Elk, Chris Pray, Jim Cranna, John Bates, Hennen Chambers, and Andrejs Gulbis. Jump over to http://ThrockmortonTheatre.org for the showtime, tickets and other details. And then later in the month – September 23-25 – I’ll be at the 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. In addition to hosting the Journalism and Podcasting panel on Sunday afternoon at 2 PM, I’ll be set up in the Podcast Lab the rest of the time with my equipment doing interviews so stop on by and let’s chat! I’ve already got a couple of folks set up to drop by: Adam Spiegelman from the Proudly Resents soundcast and Chris Gore from the PodCRASH! show and Film Threat Magazine, which is in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign to go back into publication. The Pink Hotel (Picador USA) We are very excited to have Anna Stothard and Davy Rothbart together in conversation at Skylight! You know Rothbart as the founder of the book/magazine series FOUND. Stothard's debut novel, THE PINK HOTEL, is generating a dizzying amount of buzz. Catch them in conversation here at Skylight Books. "Startling....The Pink Hotel is a spellbinding story about identity and inheritance, and how we know who we are."--The Daily Beast "Astonishingly good...Stothard's writing is accomplished and very engaging."--The Times (London) "Matters of personal identity underlie an exhilarating ride through L.A.'s seamier side in the company of a hard-bitten yet highly engaging protagonist."--Daily Mail (London) A seventeen-year-old girl pieces together the mystery of her mother's life and death among the bars and bedrooms of Los Angeles in this dazzling debut novel. A raucous, drug-fueled party has taken over a boutique hotel on Venice Beach--it's a memorial for Lily, the now-deceased, free-spirited proprietress of the place. Little do the attendees know that Lily's estranged daughter--and the nameless narrator of this striking novel--is among them, and she has just walked off with a suitcase of Lily's belongings. Abandoned by Lily many years ago, she has come a long way to learn about her mother, and the stolen suitcase--stuffed with clothes, letters, and photographs--contains not only a history of her mother's love life, but perhaps also the key to her own identity. As the tough, resourceful narrator tracks down her mother's former husbands, boyfriends, and acquaintances, a risky reenactment of her life begins to unfold. Lily had a knack for falling in love with the wrong people, and one man, a fashion photographer turned paparazzo, has begun to work his sinuous charms on the young woman. Told with high style and noirish flare, Anna Stothard's The Pink Hotel is a powerfully evocative debut novel about wish fulfillment, reckless impulse, and how we discover ourselves. ANNA STOTHARD studied English at Oxford and then moved to Los Angeles, where she was awarded a screenwriting scholarship with the masters program at the American Film Institute. She is currently living in Chalk Farm, London, and writing her next novel. DAVY ROTHBART is a frequent contributor to This American Life and a variety of magazines, the founder of Found Magazine and the editor of its various bestselling anthologies, and the author of The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas. He splits his time between Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Los Angeles, California. His fourth book, My Heart Is an Idiot, will be available in paperback this September.
