We look at the famous writings from Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and more.In this episode, we reflect on a striking quote by Epictetus from The Discourses, Book 3, Chapter 24.87:“What harm is there while you are kissing your child to say softly, ‘Tomorrow you will die'.”What does it mean to hold both love and loss in the same breath? Epictetus challenges us to practice presence by remembering impermanence—not as a cold exercise, but as a way to love more deeply. In this episode, we explore how this ancient idea can shift our modern experience of connection, attachment, and grief. If you are looking for more quotes like this one, visit viastoica.com, we have pages of hundreds of Stoic sayings. If you're a romantic suspense fan, you are probably holding your breath just like we are that the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith TV series will live up to our shipping expectations. The series, which premieres February 2 on Amazon Prime, is a reimagining of the movie starring Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as John and Jane Smith, two spies posing as a married couple for their mission who are maybe, just maybe, stumbling into real feelings for each other. Ahead of the show's first 8 episodes, hosts Jennifer and Heather discussed their first impressions of the trailer. They share their hopes and fears for the series, and, of course, their predictions about whether they're going to “ship it or skip it.”Show notes & couples discussed in the episode (by timestamp):Watch the trailers we're discussing here:Mr. and Mrs. Smith's “Teaser” trailer The “full-length trailer” for Mr. and Mrs. SmithIs the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith series based on a past movie or show? Here's what we found:Alfred Hitchcock made exactly one (1) comedy, and it was the 1941 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith – zero relationship to the Pitt/Jolie movie or this new show from what we can tell, thoughMaria Bello and Scott Bakula starred in a short-lived 1996 TV show called Mr. and Mrs Smith that seems to be more of the template for this new seriesIn the 2005 action romance movie we all know and love, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play a husband and wife whose marriage is on the rocks until they each learn that the other is a spy at a competing agency. Who knew attempted assassinations could save a marriage? Seriously, that's the plot.See you in part 2 of this episode, where we'll chat about our reactions to the full 8-episode season of the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith!

Our first Called to CARE session for 2023 begins like a dinner conversation among friends. In this podcast, AfricaExchange.org co-founders and co-directors, Sam and Melody Harrell, share how their Baptist American-African lives led them to become global leaders in “integrated” sustainable development... “I am blown a-Way.” (Rev. Jimi Calhoun, co-host, legendary musician, author and pastor)Sam and Melody are saving lives and ending poverty with education and holistic, community care. Now celebrating their 25th year, AfricaExchange (AE) has built 14 “integrated child development” preschools in Kenya's most-isolated / least-resourced regions. AE's projects are providing and fostering nutrition, clean water, education, sanitation and infrastructure, jobs, job training, Creation care and restoration, and more, on an ongoing basis in these places to help these children and their communities defeat poverty. Meet. Notice. Exchange. Serve. AfricaExchange's model is rooted in the best of Christianity's and Africa's worldviews. As the children of Baptist missionaries in Africa, Sam and Melody's foundational insight is that CARING FOR OTHERS means: listening, noticing, and being empathetic before acting. AfricaExchange helps communities build upward-spiraling personal and collective assets which benefit the whole community and their local biosphere. AE is exemplar in their work. This podcast is worth multiple listenings for those interested in “learning the lessons that will propel us forward.” (Sam Harrell)#############About our guests • Melody Harrell, spiritual director, AfricaExchange.org • Sam Harrell, executive director, AfricaExchange.org • Rev. Julaine Calhoun, pastor, BridgingAustin.org • Chris Searles, director, BioIntegrity.net, exec. editor, AllCreation.org About this seriesIn this time of polarizations and extremes we seem to be going to our Media for answers, and yet our Media is not designed or intended to give us answers. Media is a business (not a healer). Looking honestly at today's shared social challenges, all indicators indicate it is Care through kinship, attention, gentleness, safety, honesty, support, process, nurturing, love, detail, nutrition, structure, generosity, time, etc. — that humans today need most to overcome our current complex, human-made crises. What can More CARE do for modern people? Our guests are asked to share about the effectiveness of greater care for all in the living Creation through greater empathy, mutuality, relationship, conversation, listening, hearing, seeing, connecting, processing, balancing, healing, and nurturing of ourselves, each other, Earth's biodiversity, and “the environment.” #############REFERENCESR.D. When it comes to diastasis recti, a missing piece is often the back. We're often focused on the front....because, well, that's where the diastasis is!  We'll engage the transversus abdominus and strengthen the core muscles. Many times we'll focus on the front until and unless things aren't going well, before finally looking for other contributing factors. But the diastasis is often a result of a problem in the system, and originating in the back.  We can even ask patients to do things (ie: stack the ribcage over the pelvis) they may lack the ability to do! At the initial evaluation we always want to check the obliques, paraspinal muscles and fascia of the back.  Often we'll focus our initial work here and see what a difference it makes prior to highly focusing on strengthening the abdominal muscles. In this 'sode we discuss the order of operations, why we always look at the back at the initial evaluation, and this missing piece for treating diastasis recti. One thing we often miss when treating prolapse is a functional/standing assessment. If an orthopedic patient came in complaining of pain with walking and running, would we do our entire examination with them sitting or laying down?  Absolutely not!And yet, isn't that exactly what we're doing for our patients with prolapse if we aren't doing a standing assessment? It's entirely possible a patient with prolapse will never be evaluated - by their OB or their pelvic rehab provider - in the position where they experience their symptoms. In this 'sode we talk about the importance of a standing assessment, reasons you might be (justifiably!) hesitant about performing one, and how to implement for your patients. Are you routinely doing standing assessments?  Or is there something holding you back?  Reach out and let us know!"A Missing Piece" SeriesIn this series, we're taking a single aspect of a condition or symptom we feel is often overlooked, dismissed or 'just checked'.  If you're already doing this consistently, then great!  If you're doing it periodically, it might be something to prioritize higher.  And if you're not doing it at all, it's another tool in your toolbox. Not Your Mama's Kegels CourseIf you're interested in learning about why a standing assessment is critical and how to actually perform them in the clinic, make sure to check out the Not Your Mama's Kegels: Essential Pelvic Strengthening (www.pelvicptrising.com/kegels) course!Business ResourcesIf you're starting or growing a cash-based pelvic health practice, we've got some great resources for you!  We've helped more than 200 practices take off in markets across the country.  From business courses, handouts and resources to true business mentorship in our Rising program, we've got something that can help.  Check out all our Business Resources (www.pelvicptrising.com/business) and fill out the Entrepreneur Survey there!About UsNicole and Jesse Cozean founded Pelvic PT Rising to provide clinical and business resources to physical therapists to change the way we treat pelvic health.   PelvicSanity Physical Therapy together in 2016.  It grew quickly into one of the largest cash-based physical therapy practices in the country.Through Pelvic PT Rising, Nicole has created clinical courses (www.pelvicptrising.com/clinical) to help pelvic health providers gain confidence in their skills and provide frameworks to get better patient outcomes.  Together, Jesse and Nicole have helped nearly 200 pelvic practices start and grow through the Pelvic PT Rising Mentorship Program (www.pelvicptrising.com/business) and business courses to change the way pelvic health is administered. Get in Touch!Learn more at www.pelvicptrising.com, follow Nicole @nicolecozeandpt (www.instagram.com/nicolecozeandpt) or reach out via email (nicole@pelvicsanity.com).Check out our Clinical Courses, Business Resources and learn more about us at Pelvic PT Rising...Let's Continue to Rise!

One thing we often miss with stress urinary incontinence is a focus on the task and timing of our patient's issues.Often we jump right to voluntary pelvic floor strength.  After all, that's what we're taught in our introductory pelvic health courses. But pelvic health strength isn't really correlated with urinary incontinence.A patient can have a pelvic floor that tests as weak but not have any symptoms.A patient can have an pelvic floor testing as strong with massive urinary incontinence problems.Isolated strength alone tells us almost nothing about how the pelvic floor performs in real-world situations. So what task are they struggling with?  And when does the pelvic floor not meet the demand?Often this requires standing and dynamic assessment (for more on this, the Not Your Mama's Kegels course is your guide, www.pelvicptrising.com/kegels).If you're loving this series, please consider leaving a 5-star review - it really makes us happy to hear about your experience with the podcast!"A Missing Piece" SeriesIn this series, we're taking a single aspect of a condition or symptom we feel is often overlooked, dismissed or 'just checked'.  If you're already doing this consistently, then great!  If you're doing it periodically, it might be something to prioritize higher.  And if you're not doing it at all, it's another tool in your toolbox.PelviCon!For this with tickets to PelviCon, make sure to check your email!  We've got exciting information on Add-Ons.And if you don't yet have tickets....stay tuned!  Or check out PelviCon.com.  Some news for those of you with FOMO as well.Business ResourcesIf you're starting or growing a cash-based pelvic health practice, we've got some great resources for you!

Are you prioritizing a thorough evaluation of the thoracic spine and rib cage in your post-partum patients?Often we get so excited we've got someone in post-partum we jump right to the pelvic floor.  Maybe the abdominals to assess for diastasis.  Looking at the hips and SI joint. But sometimes the missing piece can be the thoracic spine.  It can be causing pain itself or contributing to pelvic floor issues. The ribs and diaphragm undergo major changes during pregnancy.  Then, in post-partum, there are a whole new set of demands on the mid and upper back.  Breastfeeding.  Lifting the baby.  Carrying for long stretches.Research bares this out.  In pregnancy, 94% of pregnant people experience back pain (42% upper, 77% mid and 74% pelvic girdle).  That remains high, at 75%, in post-partum.  And upper back pain actually gets worse (going from 42% to 43%).  So your patient has nearly a 1 in 2 chance of dealing with upper back pain when they are in your office."A Missing Piece" SeriesIn this series, we're taking a single aspect of a condition or symptom we feel is often overlooked, dismissed or 'just checked'.

Our great Devin Booker has defined our 2022 Playoff journey as the Phoenix Suns' Revenge Tour after losing in the NBA Finals last season. He did so by acknowledging the great Phoenix crowd. Anybody in attendance in games 1 and 2, and anybody who had the TV on and watching with all their energy — thank you — for the Suns have most certainly picked up off of all our collective energy. Last week, I did two episodes of Suns Mode. Our Thursday edition was released just before the game 6 of the Suns vs Pelicans series as well as the game 6 of the Mavericks vs Jazz series, and in that episode I talked about the early parts of the Suns/Pelicans series with a focus on how to win game 6 in New Orleans. The Suns would go ahead and pick up the win, and the Mavericks would go ahead and pick up their win as well. This set us up for the Suns Mode Bonus episode released this past Sunday, which was focused solely on the matchup ahead between the Suns and Mavericks. If you listened to two episodes this past week I could not thank you enough. If you have not listened to the Bonus episode from this past week and still want to learn more about the matchup, it is still not too late. I feel like most of my insights have really not changed even though we are nearly halfway through the seriesIn this episode, I talked about the series of events that occurred in game 1 and game 2, following up on many of the predictions I made about this series and how the Mavericks would try to match up.  We start by talking about game 1.Mavericks paceLuka Doncic and his method of ball-dominant basketball.Luka needing himself and his team to play "perfect" games. Rebounding battleMaxi KleberCameron JohnsonDeandre Ayton and his matchupsNow 6-0 in playoff game 1s in the Devin Booker era. From there, we moved onto game 2. I had assumed coming into this series that game 1 would be a fairly easy win. We know game 2s don't come that easy, as the Suns would drop one at home in the previous series. It started off as a very tough game, but the Suns would end up coming into their usual dominant form and create a blowout out of game 2.Suns matching game 1 turnover count in the first half aloneOffensive fouls / Refs trying their hardest in the first half to provide Mavericks advantage. Foul trouble (Ayton, McGee, Cam Johnson)Bismack BiyomboLuka Doncic and his method of ball-dominant basketball (again)Example of lack of sustainability in Mavs offense comparing first and second halves.Incredible 4th quarter masterclass from the greats Chris Paul and Devin Booker.I end the episode by previewing the next two games. The Suns will travel into Dallas to play games on Friday and Sunday. If the Mavericks are lucky enough to pull one out, they will travel back to Phoenix for game 5 on Tuesday. Regardless, I am at least 90% confident that the series will be over by the next time we talk on Suns Mode. Expect our next new episode of Suns Mode to be released next Thursday. Hopefully, we will be recapping a great Suns win but I can imagine we will also be talking about the series going on between the Grizzlies and Warriors. I think they will still be in the heat of things. Remember to spread love and #ValleyExcellence AND KEEP THAT ENERGY FOR THE REST OF THE REVENGE TOUR.WHILE WE ARE FEELING THIS GREAT, MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME TO LOVE YOURSELF. LETS GO SUNS LETS GO SUNS LETS GO SUNS LETS GO SUNSSWEEP THE MAVS@ValleySunna

When you're dependent on a substance, you have to find a way to get that substance, and that dependence doesn't often leave room for caring about the lengths you went to in order to satisfy your craving. After beginning the journey to recovery, it can be very common to start feeling guilty and ashamed of the things you did while in active addiction. It can be easy to dwell on these dark emotions and to feel overwhelmed by them, but sitting in them for too long is a good way to set yourself up for a relapse.Breaking The Cycle of Guilt & Shame in Addiction RecoveryBreaking the cycle of guilt and shame that is often present in addiction recovery is no small task. Here are a few things you can do to bring yourself out of these feelings.Recognize That Feelings of Guilt & Shame are Counter-Productive.  As you come out of active addiction, It's easy to be overly critical of yourself as well as the things that you did while you weren't sober. No one deserves to be plagued by guilt and shame, and dwelling on these emotions is nothing more than self-destructive.Ask For Forgiveness.  Everyone makes mistakes. Choosing to change your life and fight against your addiction is an extremely courageous decision, and part of recovery is making amends and asking those you have wronged for forgiveness. While they may not be in a place to be able to forgive you immediately, you will have done your best to make amends and put your actions behind you.Let Go of What You Cannot Control.  The only person you are truly in control of is yourself. There are so many things that are outside of your control that can't alter or change, your past being one of them. Holding onto the things you did in active addiction, the guilt of hurting people, or the shame of having an addiction won't help your recovery, it will only drag you backward. Letting go of the things in your past is a big step towards being free from addiction.Forgive Yourself.  Learning to forgive yourself is a long process. Dwelling on the things that you've done in the past is not constructive or beneficial to you. Your past is not what matters, what matters are the choices you make today.
