In October of 1884, 19-year-old Elfego Baca made history during the Frisco Shootout. After pinning on a fake badge and arresting a drunken cowboy named Charlie McCarty, Baca found himself surrounded by dozens of angry ranch hands. The standoff escalated into a 33-hour siege in which as many as 80 cowboys fired more than 4,000 rounds into the adobe building where Baca took cover. Remarkably, not a single bullet struck him. Acquitted of murder and later serving as sheriff, U.S. marshal, lawyer, and politician, Baca became a folk hero of the New Mexico frontier. The winning model, the Sony Bravia 8 II OLED (K65XR80M2) $3000, emerged victorious in a fiercely competitive field of flagship OLED TVs from LG, Samsung, and Panasonic. This annual event, now in its 21st year, is a benchmark for videophiles, retailers, and manufacturers, offering a no-nonsense, side-by-side comparison of the best TVs on the market.  The Value Electronics TV Shootout Founded in 2004 by Robert and Wendy Zohn, the Value Electronics TV Shootout has become well known for its rigorous and objective evaluation process. Each TV in the shootout is professionally calibrated and tested under identical conditions—same lighting, same content, and against professional-grade Sony BVM-HX3110 mastering monitors, which are the gold standard for video professionals.  The TVs are judged on picture quality attributes like color accuracy, contrast, motion handling, and performance in both Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR). This year's competition was exclusively dedicated to OLED TVs, with no separate category for LCDs, reflecting the industry's shift toward OLED's superior black levels and color reproduction. The 2025 lineup featured four flagship 65-inch OLED models: Sony Bravia 8 II QD-OLED (K65XR80M2) $3000 Samsung S95F QD-OLED (QN65S95F) $3300 Panasonic Z95B WOLED (TV65Z95BP) $2000 US Model is Z95A LG G5 WOLED (OLED65G5WUA) $2900 A panel of ISF-certified judges, including display and film production professionals, evaluated the TVs using a mix of Blu-ray movie clips and specialized test patterns, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of their capabilities. Sony's Bravia 8 II QD-OLED won top honors for its exceptional SDR performance and consistency. Judges noted Sony's superior video processing, which delivered cleaner images and better upscaling than competitors. Kevin Miller, ISFTV president and display consultant, stated, “Sony's video processing is cleaner and handles upscaling better than Samsung's, despite both using the same quantum dot OLED panel.” This processing edge proved decisive. Panasonic's Z95B OLED marked its U.S. market return at the 2025 Shootout, narrowly winning the HDR category over Samsung's S95F by 0.01 points. Absent from the U.S. for years, Panasonic leveraged the event to showcase its OLED lineup, previously limited to Europe and Asia. Alex Fried, Panasonic's director of business development, emphasized the brand's renowned picture quality, saying, “It was great to be back in the shootout, reflecting Panasonic's legacy of top-tier performance.” Samsung's S95F QD-OLED came in a close second overall, splitting HDR category wins with Panasonic and performing strongly across the board. Its quantum dot OLED panel, shared with Sony, delivered impressive brightness and color volume, but it fell slightly short in SDR due to Sony's superior processing. LG's G5 WOLED, however, was a surprising disappointment, finishing last in both SDR and HDR categories. Today, we're sharing a powerful story that highlights the often-overlooked human cost of the Wild West era, brought to life by a historian who deeply personal connection to the past. We're talking about Steve LeSueur, a wonderful historian and author who sadly passed away in July 2025 due to pancreatic cancer. This post is a tribute to his work and his last interview on Gospel Tangents, where he discussed his remarkable book, Life and Death on the Mormon Frontier: The Murders of Frank LeSueur and Gus Gibbons by The Wild Bunch, published by Greg Kofford Books. Steve LeSueur was driven to explore a piece of his own family history that had been shrouded in mystery for generations. His great-uncle, Frank LeSueur, was murdered by outlaws in 1900. While his family always knew Frank was killed, the details were scarce, and the killers were believed to have gotten away with little effort to capture them. His grandfather, Carl LeSueur, Frank's younger brother, was only five when Frank was killed and didn't have many details to share. For over a century, it was largely considered "some minor episode in western history". However, in recent years, historians and biographers specializing in outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid began to point fingers. These historians, some of whom had Mormon ties, suggested that Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang were the likely culprits behind Frank's death. This new information ignited Steve's interest, drawing him into a deeper investigation. What truly set Steve's work apart was his unique perspective: focusing on the victims. As he noted, historians often prioritize the outlaws, their daring heists, and exciting getaways, treating victims as mere "bit players" or "extras in a movie". Steve, however, looked at the events from the victim's point of view, reading journals, diaries, and reminiscences left behind by Latter-day Saints in the community. He discovered a compelling story that offered numerous insights into both the outlaws and the community itself. It turns out, not many people have an ancestor killed by a famous outlaw. Despite the year being 1900, which might sound somewhat modern, the setting for this tragedy was truly still the Wild West. Frank LeSueur's murder occurred just outside St. Johns, Arizona, a "dusty cattle and sheep town". In 1900, this town had no electricity and no running water. It was an era where cars and airplanes were not yet commonplace. Steve LeSueur's research has profoundly enhanced our understanding of this specific Wild West tragedy, shifting the narrative to those who suffered the most. His book stands as a vital contribution to history, reminding us that every "bit player" has a story worth telling. We miss Steve greatly, and our hearts go out to his family. Todd Taylor started as a full time firefighter for 7 years. He went to the PD to be able to have full custody of his son, something a FF schedule wouldn't allow. He never intended to stay with the PD but it happened. He was put into special units fairly quickly and was a definite shit magnet! Todd worked patrol, narcotics, and was a member of the state task force team.  He suffered from a broken back on duty which he healed from eventually, until it broke two more times.  Todd has some amazing stories and is one hell of a tough guy! All content is for educational and public safety awareness purposes*)-Fresno, California — On May 7, 2025, the Fresno Police Department received reports that a man, later identified as 31-year-old Martin Campos, had physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend and that he was chasing her and her 3-year-old daughter as they drove southbound on Freeway 41. During the pursuit, Campos rammed his car into the victim's vehicle and pointed a gun at her, threatening to kill her. Officers located the vehicles stopped at a traffic light near Jensen Avenue and Highway 99. As an officer approached, Campos fired at least one round at the victim, prompting the officer to return fire. The child was in the rear passenger's side. The woman reacted to the gunfire by putting the car into reverse, but collided with the sergeant's patrol car. Campos then fled the scene, striking two nearby vehicles before surrendering to police. The sergeant chased the car as Campos tries to escape, that's when the sergeant fired his gun. Campos placed his hands out of the window and was arrested without being hit by gunfire. The woman who was pistol whipped and two other people in other cars struck by Campos were transported to an area hospital with injuries that weren't considered serious. The victim's child, who was in the backseat, was examined by EMS at the scene and was not physically harmed during the incident. Campos has been charged with 11 counts including attempted murder on the woman as well as several more child abuse and firearms crimes by the Fresno County District Attorney's Office. If convicted on all charges and enhancements, Campos faces a maximum sentence of 35 years, 8 months, plus life with the possibility of parole in state prison. Campos remains in custody.
