As the knockout stage of the men's World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA draws closer, so too does the dreaded penalty shootout. Why do penalties bring so much drama and anxiety to both players and fans when they are used to decide tied games in knockout football? Former South African captain Amanda Dlamini looks back at the history of the shootout with penalty expert and author Ben Lyttleton. South African internationals Nomathemba Ntsibande and Gabriela Moodaly‑Salgado take us through their penalty routines, while West Ham United Women's sport psychologist Dr Adrienn Szabadics explains the psychology behind the penalty shootout. We hear from 1999 Women's World Cup winner Brandi Chastain about her winning penalty at that tournament. The coach of Amanda's former club JVW, in Johannesburg, Alexia Cassar, tells us about the role coaches play in preparing for shootouts. Finally, commentator Andrés Cantor reminisces about the 2022 World Cup final, while South Africa goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams, who is playing in this year's World Cup, gives us an insight into how he once saved four out of five penalties in a single shootout.

Roger Aletras grew up in New York — and by 16 years old he was already robbing people at gunpoint. What followed was a criminal career that escalated from armed robbery to working with organized crime running jewel heists across New York. When the feds came for him on a gun charge it was only the beginning. A murder during a drug deal in Vermont ultimately sent him to federal prison where he spent over 30 years inside some of America's most dangerous facilities. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Roger opens up about the complete arc of his criminal life — from his first gun robbery at 16 to the jewel heists to the murder that changed everything. He shares what life inside prison really looked like as someone connected to organized crime — the politics the power structures and the stories nobody has ever heard. And he talks about what 30 years behind bars does to a person and what life looks like on the other side. _____________________________________________ #organizedcrime #truecrimecommunity #prisonlife _____________________________________________ Thank you to MARS MEN & BLUEPRINT for sponsoring this episode: Mars Men: For a limited time, our listeners get 50% off FOR LIFE, Free Shipping, AND 3 Free Gifts at Mars Men at https://mengotomars.com/ _____________________________________________ Blueprint: For a limited time only, our listeners get 20% off + free shipping at https://blueprint.bryanjohnson.com/ by using code LOCKEDIN at checkout. #Blueprint #ad _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Armed Robber Who Faced the Death Penalty — Roger's Complete Story 00:28 His Early Childhood Broken Home and the Environment That Set Everything in Motion 01:52 His First Crimes and the Juvenile Arrest That Started Everything 06:12 Life Inside Juvenile Detention and What That World Really Looked Like 14:24 Getting Caught Robbing a Gun Store and What That Moment Really Felt Like 20:00 Learning How to Be a Better Criminal Inside Prison and What That Education Looked Like 27:00 Prison Life and the Hard Realities That Defined His Early Years Inside 32:00 Getting Released Reoffending and What Getting Pulled Into Organized Crime Really Involved 41:00 Maximum Security at Green Haven — One of New York's Most Brutal Prisons 43:00 The Escalation From Theft to Armed Robbery and What Drove That Transition 47:00 Shootouts and Life on the Run — the Most Dangerous Chapter of His Criminal Career 54:00 Prison in New Jersey and the Culture That Governed Everything Inside 01:00:00 Prison Violence the Codes That Govern It and What Survival Actually Required 01:05:00 Armored Car Robberies and the Elevated Risks That Came With That World 01:11:00 The Transition to Federal Prison and What That Step Up Really Looked Like 01:18:00 Federal Prison Challenges and the Big Cases That Defined His Time Inside 01:26:00 Facing a Murder Case and the Death Penalty — the Moment Everything Almost Ended Forever 01:35:00 The Prison Transformation — Education Reflection and the Shift That Changed Everything 01:45:00 Release and What Starting Over After Everything He Survived Really Looked Like 01:50:00 His Regrets His Redemption and the Advice He Wants Everyone to Hear _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices. Alaska is a land brimming with natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, coal, oil, salmon, and crab. Still, too often, outsiders have plundered these resources, enriching themselves and leaving Alaska and Alaskans with little to show for it. Alaska has had a “boom and bust” economy since the early 1900s, and no place exemplifies this economy better than Valdez. The aggressive Alaska Syndicate was formed in 1906 with backing from J.P. Morgan and the Guggenheim family, and its initial goal was to mine copper. However, soon the syndicate wanted all Alaska had to offer, including gold, coal, and salmon. It also fought to control rail and sea transportation in Alaska, and with powerful government connections and unlimited funds, it mostly got what it wanted. It needed a railroad to transport copper from its remote Kennecott mines to the ocean, then steamships to ferry it to southern ports. The syndicate chose to construct rail tracks from Kennecott to Cordova, and when rival builders began constructing a railroad from Valdez to Alaska's interior, a violent confrontation erupted, culminating in a shootout in Keystone Canyon. Seattle's mayor just ordered the removal of barricades that had been put in place specifically to protect residents from pimp-related shootouts. Not a misprint. The city identified a problem — organized criminal violence spilling onto residential streets — and someone actually tried to do something about it. Then the mayor stepped in and had the barriers taken down. This is the Seattle doom loop in miniature. The city creates the conditions for open-air criminal operations to flourish, residents and businesses find workarounds to survive, and city leadership then dismantles those workarounds in the name of policy consistency or traffic flow or whatever the excuse is this week. The people most exposed to the violence don't get a vote. The mayor does.Sean breaks down what actually happened, who made the call, and what it tells you about where Seattle's leadership priorities are — because it's not with the people living next to the shootouts.CHAPTERS0:00 Seattle Mayor Orders removal of…1:21 Mayor Wilson Orders Barricade Removal2:11 How Aurora Became Seattle's Pimp…4:30 Seattle Lets Notorious Pimp Walk Free6:01 21 Bullet Holes in Aurora Turf War7:01 Wilson Protects Pimps Over Residents8:24 Mayor Weighs Garbage Against Baby's Life9:15 The Case for Legalizing Prostitution10:11 This Is Pimp Violence Not Gun Violence11:31 Mayor Calls Resident Barricades…13:26 SDOT Replaces Barricades With Traffic…15:16 Seattle Refuses to Prosecute Pimps16:44 Only in SeattleSubscribe to @reasonablenews for daily Pacific Northwest news the rest of the media won't cover straight.#Seattle #Belltown #HomelessCrisis

In October of 1985, two armed robbers, Michael Platt and Bill Matix, begin targeting banks and armored cars in broad daylight in South Miami. They wear masks and army fatigues, and they have no problem opening fire in public places. Platt and Matix aren't the most successful robbers in criminal history, but they have no fear, and they leave behind no clues for investigators. Thanks to our sponsor, Quince! Arsenal's Champions League final ended in the cruellest way possible. After a dramatic night in Budapest, Mikel Arteta's side fell to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties following a 1-1 draw across 120 minutes. Kai Havertz gave Arsenal the perfect start, PSG responded from the spot, and what followed was a tactical battle between Europe's most dangerous attack and one of the continent's strongest defensive units. In this Match Review episode, Elliott, Justin and JJ break down the final in full. They discuss Arsenal's game plan, Havertz's early goal, Gabriel's outstanding defensive performance, the key moments that shaped the contest and whether Arsenal showed too much respect to the reigning European champions. The panel also examine the major refereeing decisions, including the penalty awarded to PSG, Arsenal's late appeal involving Noni Madueke and the wider frustration surrounding the officiating on the night. There is a detailed discussion on Arteta's substitutions, the impact of Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze, as well as Arsenal's approach during extra time as the game drifted towards penalties. The shootout itself is analysed, including Arsenal's misses, David Raya's role and the emotions of seeing European glory slip away after such a long and impressive campaign.Away from the final, the conversation shifts to the following day's Premier League champions parade. The hosts reflect on the scenes across North London, the reported 1.5 million supporters in attendance, Ben White's antics, Josh Kroenke's celebrations and what the day meant after the disappointment of Budapest. The episode closes with a broader reflection on Arsenal's 2025/26 season, the progress made under Arteta, the lessons learned from reaching a Champions League final and why the squad believe this journey is far from finished.Premier League Champions. Kevin Nealon (SNL, Weeds, Hiking with Kevin) joins us this week for a quietly honest conversation that goes a lot deeper than you would expect. Kevin tells the story of an active shooter scare at his Bridgeport stand up show that ended with him hiding behind a dumpster, the audiences who keep dropping mid set as his fans get older, and why the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, not SNL, was the real dream he was chasing the whole time. We also get into Garry Shandling as his mentor and dearn late friend, the Sandler private jet tour where he only did ten minutes a night, and the surprises that came with walking into Carrie Fisher's house. Wyndham Clark won a shootout at TPC Craig Ranch to win the 2026 CJ Cup championship. For the second straight year, the tournament winner got to -30, even after architect Lanny Wadkins guaranteed that his renovation would prevent that. We will talk all about the course be incredibly easy, to the resurgent play of Clark, who had been struggling the last few seasons on tour. We will also get into the play of Scottie Scheffler, Blades Brown, Jordan Spieth and others. This week, the PGA of America apparently learned nothing and named Keegan Bradley assistant captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup. It's 2:27 in the morning on a Saturday night in Austin, Texas. The crowd has cleared out. The band has packed up. And Ramsay Midwood and I sit in a dark corner of Sam's Town Point — talking. I'd been listening to Ramsay's music for five or six years before I ever made it down there. Found him on Boot Liquor Radio — part of the Soma FM family of deep-cut internet stations — and I couldn't stop. That voice. Those lyrics. Funny, sharp, sometimes quietly heartbreaking. Beautifully crooked snapshots of America. Five years of telling myself: one day I'm going to Austin to see this guy. What I thought would be a twenty-minute conversation turned into more than an hour. His childhood outside Washington D.C. — raised by a father who went to college on a music scholarship but found his true calling as a novelist and poet, and a mother who was a painter. Theater at James Madison University. The Steppenwolf in Chicago. Los Angeles. A house fire. And a wrong turn on the way to a Super Bowl party that somehow changed everything. Sam's Town Point has been a South Austin institution since 1981. Tucked off Slaughter Lane in a residential corner of the city — you'd never know it's there unless someone brought you. Ramsay stumbled in for open mic night in 2002. By 2017 he owned the place. Not a bar owner. Not a businessman. A musician who took a wrong turn and never left. And somewhere along the way — I think I made a friend.

The re-run episodes have been completely edited, polished, re-recorded and freshly produced from start to finish to match our current production standards. They are not complete rewrites - our goal wasn't to alter the cases or reshape the writing, but to preserve the original storytelling while giving the production the refinement it didn't have when we started the show back in 2016. Where appropriate, updates have been added, but the core structure and storytelling remain faithful to the originals. Because of this, these re-releases may sound a little different to our recent episodes, but they allow us to bring some of the earliest episodes up to the technical quality listeners expect today.---Narration – Anonymous HostResearch & writing – Anonymous Host & Elsha McGill Production & music – Mike MigasAudio editing – Anthony TelferSign up for Casefile Premium:Apple PremiumSpotify PremiumPatreonFor all credits and sources, please visit https://casefilepodcast.com/casefile-archives-11-north-hollywood-shootout Hosted on Acast. Pat Leahy and Jack Horgan-Jones join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· The findings of the Irish Times/TG4 opinion poll on first preference votes, carried out by Ipsos B&A, suggests three leading candidates in the Galway West byelection. It shows Seán Kyne (Fine Gael) at 17 per cent followed by Noel Thomas (Independent Ireland Party) on 16 per cent and Helen Ogbu (Labour) on 12 per cent. · In Dublin Central, candidate and veteran criminal Gerry Hutch rejected claims that recent comments he made about immigrants were racist. In a social media post on Sunday Hutch said, “illegal immigrants”, including Somalis, who were “mooching” their way into the country, should be interned in the Curragh.· And Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton's recent confirmation that her department is facing a deficit of more than €500 million this year was dwarfed by the HSE's decision to pause recruitment in non-frontline roles across significant parts of the country due to a projected €1 billion overspend this year.Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· Mark Paul on nationalist-led administrations running Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Finn McRedmond is not a fan of ‘grotty' Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, and Donald Trump's boundless appetite for self‑memorialisation. Pete and Johnny are back with an unscheduled session because Man City only beat Burnley 1-0, and that changes everything. Same points, same goal difference, same record. Five games left. It's a shootout. Here's what's inside:
In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of a good old fashioned microphone shootout—this time, it's all about wireless lavalier mics! I (quickly) run through a lineup of wireless lavalier microphones including the DJI Mic Mini, Hollyland Lark M2, Rode Wireless Micro, Rode Wireless Go, and Shure Move Mic. Not only do I compare how they sound right out of the box, but I also show how a little post production can level the playing field between even budget and premium options. I break down what's happening with Apple HLS video, what hosts like Captivate are charging, and why you need to seriously consider the “weight” video adds before taking the plunge.Getting Your Edited Audio To People In Apple - You Can't (If you add video)Can you maintain your audio quality? The fellas are back with our dear friend Ben Rector. It's a classic dad-session—think driveway-wine-in-camping-chairs vibes. He also breaks down his quest to look less like an accountant with his new robust beard and a legendary sock shootout method to find the perfect pair. But it's not all oatmeal-sifting rituals and badminton losses. The guys get into the "real" stuff, too. Ben talks about his career shift—choosing depth over scale so he can actually be present for his kids' math homework. It's a funny, deep, and totally relatable look at suburban fatherhood.
