Amid chaos following Hurricane Helene, hear how BIPOC journalists redefine community engagement by addressing urgent needs in western North Carolina. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description:  Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on “Meet the BIPOC Press”, we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media (“Justice Media Project”), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism?“. . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering.” - Brooklyn Brown“I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional.” - Magaly UrdialesGuests:• Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather• Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media• Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, DocumentedWatch the broadcast episode cut for time at our YouTube channel and airing on PBS stations across the country Subscribe to episode notes via PatreonMusic In the Middle:  Novalima remix of “La Voz” by Eljuri, courtesy of the artist.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  by Podington Bear. Related Laura Flanders Show Episodes:• Where Do We Go From Here? Growing up in a musical family with a religious background, Andrew gained his first vocal experience singing hymns with family and in church choirs. That same passionate feeling within himself has prompted Andrew's emotional singing power and style throughout his life.  After leaving home at the age of sixteen he spent years honing his guitar craft and living a gypsy life of travel, adventure seeking, and soul searching(with a few bumps along the way). In 2020 Andrew landed a coveted weekly performance with the house band at Jack of the Wood, an Asheville bluegrass institution. Soon after he joined The Well Drinkers, a progressive bluegrass band based in the area.  Performing and touring relentlessly with these acts eventually gave Andrew the confidence to step into the limelight with his own songs and unique style, and the Andrew Wakefield solo project was born.  Catch Andrew at Jack of the Wood in downtown Asheville every Sunday 1-3pm with the Bluegrass Brunch Boys! (New York, NY) “I didn't plan to put out a solo EP,” states Lily Vakili, the poetic and bluesy powerhouse best known for fronting the eponymous Vakili Band. But when the opportunity arose for a string of solo dates supporting John Douglas (of Trashcan Sinatras) this coming October, it “felt both completely new and like a return home.” As preparations for the tour began, new songs started to emerge, and Vakili, who started her musical career as a solo artist, decided to take some of her favorite advice: “Just keep on, keep improving your art, keep performing. Don't isolate yourself, stay open and say YES.”

However, some of the best ideas come, not from experts, but from you, and our other colleagues who are still in classrooms and buildings. Today's conversation meanders like a pleasant stroll alongside a slow-moving stream, and like any fall time hike in the Smokey Mountains, it possesses its own beauty and splendor.Kelly Scarbrough has been an educator of 17 years. She has invested her career teaching primary grades and building a foundation and love of learning. In January, she opens a new chapter in beginning her doctoral studies in educational leadership. Kelly has a passion for servant leadership and believes that leading with empathy and a genuine desire to serve others fosters authentic, deep relationships and cultivates positive change. While Kelly is a full-time teacher, she is also excited to continue her journey as she continues to grow as an educator and leader!Notable Quotes Kelly:“People's beliefs in me have helped mold me into believing I can do it.” “There's a lot that's going on and teachers want to feel supported through it.” “I know how to sit quiet and listen.”“There is trust amongst our team and it makes such a difference in how we work together.”“He was okay saying ‘I don't know' and that impacted the staff greatly… we appreciated that in him.”“As I am developing myself as a leader, I am finding much more appreciation for the diversity in knowledge others bring about.” “Presence makes all the difference”Frederick:“We can all lead no matter where we are.”“Clarify to people, ‘What do you need out of this today?'”“When there is so much going on, the power of presence actually increases.”“Presence is the gift – you don't need to fill the space you create.”“If we are going to do something, that means there is something else we can't do!”“What are the pieces in this new initiative… that align with where we are already going?”“When I'm vulnerable, I'm saying, ‘I trust you.'”“That focus on you as a person actually made a difference on you as a teacher.”‘Here's what the tip looks like, but what's happening underneath the water?”Kelly's Contact InfoLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelly-scarbrough-776175266?trk=contact-info Frederick's Links:Email: frederick@frederickbuskey.comWebsite: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/ LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/strategicleadershipconsulting Daily Email subscribe: https://adept-experimenter-3588.ck.page/ff61713840

In 2018, he ran for Tennessee State Governor. He has since created the Paranormal TV shows "It Happened to Me..." "Haunted Graves", and a comedy skit show entitled "Lets Make Love with Big N Funky." Vinnie and his tag team partner "Big" Luke Walker have started writing and producing six movies about some of the legends, myths, and stories surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains in a collection they call "The Smoky Mountain Chronicles". Justin is fast gaining momentum and recognition in the crypto community as his extensive study and vast knowledge of mysterious creatures are both captivating and intriguing fellow researchers throughout the nation. Justin, who now resides in the epicenter of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is known for his astute insight into the fascinating field of cryptozoology, and his colleagues say he has profound, thought-provoking theories and ideas that facilitate riveting cryptid discussions on media platforms such as podcasts. Justin is becoming a highly sought-after guest on cryptid-themed podcasts. He most recently teamed up with popular podcaster Grizzly Chris to co-host the "Paranormal Rabbit Hole" show, which delves deep into the mind-blowing world of "what if's" in the vast and fascinating world of the unknown. Justin may be new to the cryptid community, but his research into the unknown has been a life-long passion and endeavor. He was born and raised in the Amazon Jungle in Colombia, South America, instilling within him a close connection to the land and a keen observatory nature. He is a survivalist enthusiast and an avid reader, having read over 1,000 Bigfoot reports. Colleagues say it is Justin's talented and articulate storytelling that makes him a podcast favorite. In one of his past podcast sessions, a YouTube listener commented that she was “hanging on to every word!” Justin's stories from the wild terrain of the Amazon Jungle certainly enthralls, but it is also his intelligence in the field of cryptozoology and firm grasp of the subject that compel people to listen to him. In his research, Justin looks for common threads in cryptid behavior such as patterns and details. Justin loves to hike and cook and hopes to expand Bigfoot research and documentation in The Smoky Mountain region. He is also interested in other unknown subject matter and describes himself as a “curious seeker of anything odd or peculiar.” His life's motto is Vivamus Ferox, which is Latin for “Live Fierce.”Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! Tonight I will be posting the Best of Sasquatch Chronicles V. These episodes are chosen by the members. I want to wish all of the members Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you so much supporting what I do. I hope you guys and gals enjoy the show. 985 Creature Follows Farmer Home - Picked By Karla G Jacob writes “Last year in September in Minnesota I had a close interaction with a creature and have some video footage of it. Last year when this event took place I originally thought it was a dog man or wendigo or something of the sort. SC EP:825 The Locals Tried To Warn Me  - Picked By Karen F Alex from Idaho writes “When I was a teenage back around 2007-2008 I had two terrifying encounters back to back with I believe the more dog type/dog face Sasquatch in the Pacific Beach part of WA.”] SC EP:974 The Ozark Wildman - Picked By Bill S Tom writes “In the summer of 1962, over 60 years ago, I schedule things that happened in my life around that time as occurring between when JFK came to my little Illinois town and spoke in the public square (Oct 1960) and when he was later assassinated (Nov 63). I think the year was probably 1961 or 1962. I can't tell for sure. I was six or seven years old; my brother was two years older than I and I had two younger sisters spaced apart by about two years each. SC EP:956 The Arkansas Property Picked By Jennifer B I will be welcoming Pam and Paul to the show. They have been hunting this 80 acre property. In 2015 they purchased 40 acres. Pam writes “We live in northern Arkansas at the foothills of the Ozarks. My husband and I started hunting this 80 acre property around 2003 or 2004. Can't remember exact year. My husband found tracks but at the time didn't really know what it was. My husbands brother saw something big walking bi-pedal up the creek. I had something massive growl at me. We had heard wood knocks. I heard loud thumps behind my stand quite often. I had something pacing back and forth behind my stand but it was getting too dark and woods are to thick to see. I would always get this ominous feeling out here. We had a gifting situation and at the time we didn't know what was going on. We knew nothing about Sasquatch. In 2015 we bought 40 of the 80 acres and started building a house. That's when things ramped up. I found tracks in the front yard. Large handprints on the front window. In 2020 Pam had scary encounter with a creature very close to her home. It was not the last time she would see it. Here are some pictures they sent me with Pam's notes. SC EP:841 We Are Moving Picked By Teresa M “I live in the hills of the Smokey Mountains. I was a non- believer definitely! Until I spotlighted one drinking I've heard from my Creek 3:30 a.m. one night I woke up from a dead sleep and had a feeling of danger or something very wrong. I went to my back door and have a giant spotlight I shined it towards my Creek which is always full of deer in my back field, never seen a bear the six years I've lived here and I saw something furry at the creek 90 yards from my back door drinking and I thought wow there's a bear. Then it stood up and I saw a huge hands that hung past its knees big hands!! black furry sleek mahogany-ish dark hair about 12 in maybe hanging off the body it was probably about 4 ft across about 8 ft tall extremely muscular look like a bodybuilder, it leaned its head back and let out a scream that sent ripples through my body for my head all the way down to my feet like a base on the stereo turned up too loud I felt my organs vibrate I couldn't not believe what I was seeing so I shined the light on it again it screamed for 30 to 45 seconds straight without taking a breath so long so loud the loudest sound I think I've ever heard in my life maybe besides air siren.” Spoke to the eyewitness and her husband bought a large piece of property six years ago in TN. The witness said “I did not believe in Bigfoot, I thought it was a joke. We have had some many things happen on this property. I do not know what these things are but we are actively looking for a different place to live.”

Though he loved music and played frequent gigs, he did not study it in college, yet post-graduation, he decided to throw in his lot with a friend that moved to Nashville in the early 80s. With luck on his side, he fairly quickly hit the scene in a big way in 1985 by landing the lead guitar spot with the then-new artist, Patty Loveless. Jeff was soon riding the wave of success with Patty who was busy sending singles up the charts and wowing crowds and critics with her soulful Kentucky sound. This led to major screen time, as Loveless guested on the TV shows of the day, including Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show, Letterman, and the various music shows on The Nashville Network.  Jeff was also getting to watch Patty make her records with guitarists Reggie Young, Ray Flacke, Albert Lee, Richard Bennett, and Steve Gibson. He soon was putting his watch-time lessons to use by working on demo sessions in-between road dates to the point that he was soon able to bid the road goodbye and focus completely on studio work. After decades of studio work, he was asked by one of his clients, Reba McIntire, to go out on the road with her, which lead to him also performing road dates with Brooks & Dunn. Jeff now tours with two legendary Country Music acts, and because of their less strenuous touring, he is able to keep his studio work thriving. On the gear front, King tells the backstory of his main guitar, a 1985 G-Bender equipped Glaser Tele-Style that is on its second neck.
