National and international firefighters have been coming to SoCal to help fight the wildfires devastating the region. How are they deployed?  These wildfires have displaced tens of thousands of Southern Californians, many of them suddenly entering LA’s brutal, competitive, and already crowded rental market. 51 - How can I Overcome the Darkness? The Power of Faith and Authentic Leadership In this conversation, Host, Conrad Weaver interviews Jason Sautel, a former firefighter, about his experiences and struggles with mental health in the first responder community. They also discuss the role of faith in healing and the need for support systems within the fire service. The conversation touches on topics such as the impact of childhood trauma, the challenges of being a first responder, and the importance of finding a community that understands and supports mental health. The conversation explores the themes of hope, connection, leadership, and support within the first responder community. It emphasizes the importance of planting seeds of hope and reaching out for help. The conversation also touches on the challenges faced by first responders and the need for authentic leadership. The guest shares his personal journey of finding hope and healing through faith and encourages others to do the same. The conversation concludes with a discussion on off-gassing and the importance of finding joy and laughter in life. TAKEAWAYS First responders often join the fire service to hide or mask their own traumas and struggles. The traumas of the job can amplify existing struggles and lead to mental health issues. Faith-based support systems can provide healing and a sense of community for first responders. There is a need for more programs and resources that address the mental health needs of first responders. Finding a mentor or support group within the fire service can be beneficial for navigating the challenges of mental health. Planting seeds of hope and reaching out for help are crucial for individuals struggling with darkness and emptiness. Authentic leadership is needed within the first responder community, with leaders who are present, supportive, and willing to listen. Finding hope and healing through faith can be a powerful journey for individuals in the first responder community. Connecting with a local church and supportive community can provide a source of hope and guidance. Off-gassing and finding joy and laughter in life are important for self-care and rejuvenation. ABOUT OUR GUEST (In his own words) I write, surf, pray, follow Jesus, and eat donuts. I am passionate about helping anyone feeling hopeless see that you always have choices. I love walking alongside those who are hurting to give them the encouragement and hope they deserve—whether that's face-to-face or online. I love my wife of sixteen years, Kristie, our four two-legged children, our two four-legged children, and appreciate God's gifts of donuts, surfing, and Maui. The simplicity and security of my Southern Californian childhood quickly came to a halt the day my parents divorced when I was eight. I was raised by my father, a Vietnam vet afflicted by the demons of his past.Being a father never came naturally to him, and to say my childhood years were rough would be an understatement. Imagine the environment it would take for a ten-year-old child to consider suicide. When I was a sophomore, the school system finally tossed me out. I finished my entire school career without reading a single book, completing a homework assignment, or making any true friends. An urge—what I now know was a calling—to serve people inspired me to join a local volunteer fire department. At age 18, I watched my class graduate and receive their diplomas. I was a seasonal firefighter, across the street on the back of a fire engine, hoping no one would recognize me or sense my shame. While working as a fireman, I began a downward spiral. One year later, I found myself in downtown Oakland, assigned to one of the toughest firehouses in the country. Despite my past, I excelled at my job. Against all odds, becoming a decorated firefighter saved my life, but it didn't save my soul. I continued to walk in the dark, spiraling down into the pain of hopelessness. I was at the end of my rope when a girl entered this broken guy's life and showed me something I had never seen or felt before. I am a bruised and broken man who has been restored by God's grace and I want to share it with the world! When I first started my Facebook page “Jesus. He is all we need” I never expected it to grow the way it has. It has been a total blessing. Being connected with hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters is something very special. At some of their darkest hours, I'm so lucky to have been able to remind people of the love that Jesus has for them. What is the latest research on extending our lifespan while looking and feeling our best?Learn more about today's guest Leslie Kenny and purchase PRIMEADINE with code RACHEL at https://oxford-healthspan.myshopify.comLearn more about Leslie KennyOxford Healthspan was founded by Leslie Kenny, a Southern Californian entrepreneur and graduate of both Berkeley and Harvard, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of five years and that RA could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could with safe, natural solutions. She went back to school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, became a Bulletproof coach under health pioneer Dave Asprey, and took on health coaching clients worldwide. At the same time, she began helping life science academics at European universities, including Oxford (where she lives), to raise money for their discoveries. At a meeting with one such scientist, she learned about a natural compound called spermidine, abundant in nattō, a traditional Japanese dish that she had grown up with. Spermidine was showing great promise supporting health as we age.The science was compelling – one scientist even called it “an anti-aging vitamin” in a published scientific journal – and it was safe. Still, because it was natural, food-derived, and not a drug that would bring in more money, no one was interested in promoting it.Leslie immediately wanted her octogenarian mother back home in California to take it – especially since nattō is very hard to come by (it's pretty smelly, for one thing!) Unfortunately, spermidine wasn't available in the US (or really even known there). Spotting this unmet need, she decided to bring it to the US herself.Today, at age 57, Leslie is living proof that we can get better with age, so long as we take responsibility for our health and meet our doctors halfway.Spermidine is part of her anti-aging arsenal, and she hopes it will become part of yours too.Ways to work with Rachel Varga!FREE 30-minute Biohacking For Ageless Beauty Training! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/freebiesDownload Radiance: The New Skin Science on Audible!Book a One-on-one with Rachel Varga for customized skin care, rejuvenation guidance, and ongoing support! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/consultation and use code Podcast15!Shop skincare, make-up, hair/skin/nail supplements, grooming tools, dermal rollers, and much more! https://alwaysradiantskinshop.com/Register for my next weekly LIVE and FREE Masterclass on various topics where I answer your questions! https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwuceioqTwiE9O1K1fF1vnLqZBlCvPdkDWc The video replays (which are highly interactive) are available on my skin shop for a small fee here!Join Seasonal Skincare Expert Tutorials on skincare, makeup, hair care (and growth), biohacking, clean peels, pre and post-rejuvenation tips, dermal rolling, and advanced at-home technologies for the face and body! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/Join The School of Radiance Membership for your personal radiant transformation by cultivating resilient radiance through detoxing from environmental toxins, enhancing communication, enhancing relationships, etiquette, and much more: https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/membershipAs a disclaimer, please note that the information shared in this podcast and interview is not to be taken as medical advice, and it's always important to consult with your physician before making any lifestyle changes. Green Beauty Conversations by Formula Botanica | Organic & Natural Skincare | Cosmetic Formulation | Indie Beauty Business

Clean beauty has been espoused for almost three decades and in that time there has been no real clarity on what "clean" really means in the beauty landscape. Initially tied to the Southern Californian wellness movement of the early '90s, the broad interpretation of clean has only become wider and more confusing. However, now there is a new beauty movement afoot that is challenging clean. Strictly speaking, “clean beauty” remains a marketing term that would require evidence-based proof to substantiate the claims some beauty brands use it for. In this episode, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier is joined by colleague School Education Manager Ana Green to discuss this hotly-debated term. Listen in to make your mind up about the future of clean beauty.  To learn more about this episode, all of the links that were mentioned and anything else, please visit the show notes on the Formula Botanica website.

"It's hard to hire female chefs. It's hard to hire African American chefs because there's just not as many people interested in it, which I'm like, yeah, and that's why we need to promote it, and that's why we need to give them opportunities far beyond what might seem reasonable because we want them to be the heroes so everyone else can look up to them.  Then we can actually bring real diversity into our kitchens."  Curtis Stone Curtis Stone is one of the busiest chefs in the country between running his restaurants, appearing in countless television shows like Top Chef Masters (host), Netflix's Iron Chef, and Fox's Crime Scene Kitchen (judge), being a New York Times best-selling author of six cookbooks, and growing Kitchen Solutions, a collection of top-selling and best-reviewed cookware on HSN. Obsessed with food from a young age, Curtis credits his mom and grandmother as his cooking and baking mentors. Following his passion, he began his culinary career as an apprentice at the Savoy Hotels five-star restaurant in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia. Three years later at the age of 21, he moved to Europe and sought out Britain's most celebrated chef (often referred to as the first celebrity chef), Marco Pierre White, to further his education and classical training for eight years. During that time, he was approached to co-host a television show, Surfing the Menu, traveling around Australia visiting food producers and cooking their produce. The show caught the eye of US producers that led to another television gig, Take Home Chef, and a subsequent move to the US settling in Los Angeles. Today, Los Angeles-based Curtis' Michelin-starred restaurants include Maude in Beverly Hills named for his paternal grandmother serving refined, seasonally-focused Southern Californian cuisine, and Gwen Butcher Shop & Restaurant in Hollywood named for his maternal grandmother where he partnered with his brother, Luke Stone, to create an old-world, European-style butcher shop and an elegant restaurant using fire-based cooking techniques.  Please join me, your host, Brad Johnson, and Curtis on Corner Table Talk as we learn more about what motivates him beyond creating beautiful and delicious food, sharing his philosophy and knowledge, and how he directs his actions to bring joy and create a positive community around him. HOW WE MOVE Stay tuned to the end of the guest interview when international speaker, writer and diplomat Ambassador Shabazz (daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz) spends a few moments unpacking the discussion and highlights some of the interesting people, places and things that have her attention.   Instagram: Corner Table Talk  and Post and Beam Hospitality LinkedIn: Brad Johnson E.Mail:  brad@postandbeamhospitality.com For more information on host Brad Johnson or to join our mailing list, please visit: https://postandbeamhospitality.com/ Theme Music: Bryce Vine Corner Table™ is a trademark of Post & Beam Hospitality LLCSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

Is there such a thing as a "neutral" accent, and if so what does it sound like? And that quirk in the way Southern Californians talk about freeways. They'll say things like Take the 405 North and Get on the 8 and head east. But why the definite article? Plus, those Little Free Libraries stocked with books have inspired another kind of giving: little free pantries filled with canned foods for anyone in need. They're also called blessing boxes. Also, Kabelsalat, vigesimal, a take-off puzzle, red rag, s'occuper de ses oignons, a holiday left on a wall, snake's honeymoon, powdered it, throwing smoke, and why married couples may persist in calling each other Mother and Father long after their children are grown. As the sun fades and day turns to dusk in Paris, the beautiful Champs-Élysées becomes a twinkling thoroughfare filled with the comings and goings of sharply-dressed Parisians, bustling to and fro beneath the majestic Arc de Triomphe. In a small, nameless cafe, Trixie and her family open a fourth bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as they laugh and smile over a table filled with escargots de bourgogne, couilles de mouton, and tarte tatin. As the warmth and fellowship from this intimate Thanksgiving gathering travels through the cafe doors to the chilly street outside, the scene cuts to America: the barren hills of Hollywood bake under the Southern Californian sun; a house sits alone against a hillside littered with the detritus from citrus trees and forsaken souls. Inside, the critically-acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl is on the television while a Stouffer's Meat Lovers Lasagna bakes in the chef-caliber Miele oven. A Mexican Coca-Cola sits alone on the coffee table as its consumer, Katya, scrolls aimlessly through videos of Turkey-Fryer fires on Tik Tok set to pop music refrains from Dua Lipa. Never in the history of the world has there been such a stark dichotomy of holiday celebrations than between Paris and Los Angeles. Alas, such is this post-modern life.
