More of my interview with 'The Big Bang Theory' and ‘The Audacity' star Simon Helberg. Simon tells me about the unfortunate way he found out ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip' was cancelled, how he untied his self-worth from achievement, and how parenthood brought more perspective. Plus, I share a funny time at this restaurant that involved his ‘Big Bang' costar Jim Parsons. This episode was recorded at El Condor in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode #291: Valerie Long (Richard Long, Mara Corday) Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Valerie Long, daughter of actors Richard Long and Mara Corday. It took some time for Valerie to come around to the idea of being on the podcast and frankly, we get it. As you will hear, her recollections about her father's passing at an early age and her difficulties with that loss play a part in this conversation. For many of us, Richard Long is best known from either television shows The Big Valley or Nanny and the Professor. We discuss those shows as well as The Twilight Zone, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick as well as his films – he made his debut on the silver screen with Orson Wells and Claudette Colbert, in Tomorrow is Forever. I mean….. We also discuss her actress, dancer, model mother Mara Corday who passed away after this episode was recorded. In fact, we got a call from the New York Times regarding her career when they wrote her obituary as they wanted to confirm a few things we discussed on the podcast with Valerie. It's almost unfathomable to know that the New York Times would site our podcast when talking about the life and career of Mara Corday. Thanks to Valerie for being so open and honest about everything and for being on the podcast to tell her story. Along the way, we discuss family friends like Clint Eastwood, Roddy McDowell, Dan Rowan, Peter Marshall and many others. Additionally we discuss a story we frankly never knew about prior to this episode. Prior to her parents' marriage, Richard was married to an up-and-coming actress named Suzan Ball who died shortly after their wedding at age 22, when Richard was only 23. It's a tragic story that we uncover talking to Valerie who gives us the details about how this likely affected her father. The Rarified Heir Podcast, everyone has a story.

Cinderella came out of the gritty streets of Philadelphia by writing hookey riffs, shout along choruses and a fun, glammy stage show. Gene Simmons tried to get them signed but it was Jon Bon Jovi who would convince his label Mercury to get them a record contract. Led by lead singer/songwriter/lead guitarist Tom Keifer, Cinderella had hard riffs and a Sunset Strip performance style that made them perfect for MTV in the mid- to late-80s. Their debut album Night Songs landed in June of 1986 and laid the foundation for more platinum albums and MTV airplay. Keifer's raspy voice can lead big sing-a-long rockers like Shake Me or Somebody Save Me or can sing a lament like Nobody's Fool. His friend Eric Brittingham provides the steady bass and Jeff LaBar lays textures against Keifer's hard riffs and trades a few licks. On the record, drums were provided by veteran studio musician Jody Cortez, though Fred Coury was brought in just in time to make the album cover (don't get Jackson started) and joined the band. Yes, their lyrics are mostly banal and cliched sexual conquests but they were of a time and Cinderella may have done that sleazy 80s rock made famous by Motley Crue and Guns N Roses as well as anyone. Once grunge came, all that was glam or "hair metal" had to go but maybe Cinderella should have been given the opportunity to reinvent themselves like Def Leppard. We think they were unnecessary casualties of grunge and while Night Songs may not be skip-free, it's a solid hard rocking 80s album with some great riffs and fist pumping choruses. Dermot and Kieran Mulroney are bringing a little California country to Annapolis. Their band, jackrabbit., is headed to Rams Head On Stage on Saturday, May 30, as part of the First Rodeo Tour, and this conversation digs into the sound, the songs, and the brotherly chemistry behind it all. The Mulroneys describe jackrabbit. as "Cali-Country," a blend of Bakersfield twang, Eagles-style harmonies, and the warm, easy feel of classic Sunset Strip soft rock. We talk about what that sounds like live, how their voices found each other, what it means to play a true listening room like Rams Head, and what they hope people feel when they leave the show. We also get into the band's new EP, whether a full album is on the way, and why this music feels built for the stage. And yes, we also talk about acting, Hunting Wives, storytelling, Dermot's fascination with sticks, dream collaborators, and the songs they never get tired of playing. Have a listen. What does it take to finish a record that's been living in your head for two decades? In Episode 284, Jim Exon traces the long arc of Nashville Sessions — a country-leaning album shaped by time, persistence, and a deep bench of collaborators, including Jeff Silbar, Ron Wallace, and lyrics by Gay Hendricks. Alongside Martin Young, Exon brings a distinctly Ojai-rooted project into authentic Nashville form. Before the studio, there was the road — years managing and representing Maynard Ferguson — and before that, the Sunset Strip grind as a working musician. We talk about how the music business has changed, what collaborators really contribute, and the rare discipline it takes to finally finish what you started. We did not talk about Canary Islands' whistle language, Ernest Shackleton or the impact of Charlemagne's missi domenici. A conversation about craft, time, and getting it done. “I don't think we thought about anything. We just did it!” - Genny Schorr, about her groundbreaking LA punk band Backstage PassBack in February, we had an awesome chat with musician, stylist, and “All Roads Lead To Punk” author Genny Schorr (AKA Genny Body.) With her band Backstage Pass, she was one of the original LA punks; blending punk with glam rock as they terrorized the Sunset Strip and challenging gender roles. Then she was stylist to the stars at the legendary Strait Jacket boutique, dressing the likes of the Bangles, the Go-Gos, Linda Ronstadt, and so so many more. (Check out Kathy Valentine wearing custom Strait Jacket on slide 6!) Genny is a lifelong music and fashion lover and devoted mom. Through it all, she's embodied the punk spirit: doing it yourself and not giving a hoot what anyone else thinks! She's not just “Genny-body,” she's a trailblazer with a story to tell. Plus: Emma recounts the mystery of the multiplying shelf screws? “Backstage Pass: An Interview with Genny Schorr” is available now wherever you stream your podcasts

Don and Dude crash into the second round of March Metal Madness where glitter, hairspray, and street‑corner hooks square up against steel‑toed stomp and Texas‑born groove. Skyscraper choruses, talkbox licks, mosh‑pit breakdowns, and arena‑ready riffs drive a bracket showdown between a late‑80s glam breakthrough and the record that dragged metal out of the Sunset Strip and into a heavier, meaner decade. The Albums Skid Row – Skid Row (1989) Young Jersey upstarts turn the glam formula meaner and more grounded, stacking blue‑collar storytelling, towering Sebastian Bach vocals, and streetwise riffs into a sleek debut that feels more alleyway than catwalk.Pantera – Cowboys from Hell (1990) Former glam lifers slam the door on their past and invent their future with precision riffs, machine‑tight rhythms, and swaggering grooves that reset how heavy metal could punch, swing, and strut at the same time.Diggin' AlbumsWilliam Crighton – Further Down the Road (2026) Australian folk‑rock storyteller stretches his baritone over spacious, atmospheric arrangements that move at a slow burn, turning journeys through the outback and inner life into something that feels mystical and lived‑in.Richard Marx – Richard Marx (1987) Chart‑ready 80s pop rock in its purest form, all gleaming guitars, radio‑perfect hooks, and power ballads that prove craft and polish can still hit like personal confession.Ladytron – Paradises (2026) Liverpool synth lifers lean into bright club rhythms and detailed electronics, pairing cool, detached vocals with disco‑tinted grooves that feel like dancing through neon at the end of the world.Tommy Emmanuel – Living in the Light (2025) Fingerstyle wizardry meets song‑first warmth as Emmanuel tracks mostly live in the studio, letting ringing acoustic lines, subtle band touches, and a generous spirit turn technical fireworks into something intimate.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“I detest the phrase ‘hair band' or ‘hair metal.' It's insulting to us. We are just a rock band – too pop to be metal and too rock to be pop.” – Joe Elliott
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into an incredible story from Guitar Player that sheds new light on the early days of Eddie Van Halen—before the tapping, before the whammy bar, and before the world knew his name. George Lynch shares firsthand memories of witnessing Eddie in his rawest form on the Sunset Strip—back when he was playing a Les Paul through a Fender amp, delivering a blues-driven style heavily inspired by Eric Clapton. No flashy techniques. No dive bombs. Just pure, mind-blowing guitar playing. Lynch describes seeing early versions of Van Halen (and even pre-Van Halen days in Mammoth) as “mind-bending,” pushing him to practice for hours just to keep up. But what's even more fascinating? He says that version of Eddie—the stripped-down, “meat-and-potatoes” blues player—might be the most underrated and interesting era of all. The episode also uncovers a forgotten influence: Terry Kilgore of Reddi Killowatt. According to Lynch, Kilgore may have inspired some of Eddie's early ideas—and might have even been “better” at the time. It's a bold claim that adds a whole new layer to the Van Halen origin story. Plus, hear incredible behind-the-scenes stories from the Monsters of Rock Tour 1988—including how Eddie lent Lynch his own gear for half the tour, and even gave Lynch's son a private guitar lesson backstage. A true class act. If you're a fan of Van Halen, guitar history, or the evolution of Eddie Van Halen's iconic sound, this is a must-watch episode packed with rare insight, stories, and inspiration.

Wolfgang Puck arrived in Los Angeles in 1975 with French technique and Austrian instincts, and he became the chef at Ma Maison in West Hollywood—a restaurant so exclusive the phone number wasn't listed—where Orson Welles ate lunch every day and a generation of Hollywood royalty witnessed the birth of California cuisine. Then in 1982, after a falling out with the owner, he opened Spago on the Sunset Strip with a wood-burning oven, a funky dining room, and a smoked salmon pizza that changed everything. What followed was two James Beard Awards for Outstanding Chef and 32 years of feeding the most famous people on the planet at the Academy Awards Governors Ball. We talk about all of it—the early years, the big swings, and what it feels like to be America's first celebrity chef. This episode delves into a thrilling crime narrative featuring Philip Marlowe, a detective navigating the murky waters of Hollywood's underbelly. The story unfolds with a mysterious client seeking help, leading to a series of events involving a shooting, investigations, and unexpected revelations. As Marlowe uncovers connections between various characters, the tension escalates, culminating in a dramatic confrontation and resolution. The narrative captures the essence of classic crime fiction, blending suspense, intrigue, and character depth. Most detectives try to solve a case—they rarely get involved in a web this tangled. Philip Marlowe faces a murder, blackmail, and a mysterious schoolteacher with a secret that could blow the case wide open. When Hollywood's glittering surface conceals deadly secrets, only Marlowe's razor-sharp instinct can cut through the lies. But timing is everything—miss a detail, and you risk being swallowed by the darkness. In this gripping episode, Marlowe navigates a labyrinth of murder, blackmail, and deception on the Sunset Strip. From a cryptic note threatening a film producer to a staged photograph hiding a killer, every move is a puzzle piece in a deadly game. You'll uncover how carefully staged images reveal buried truths, how the smallest detail—like a negative the size of a postage stamp—can implicate or clear a suspect, and the art of reading between the lines in a crime scene. We break down Raymond Chandler's masterful storytelling and the noir world of 1949 Hollywood, with secrets hidden in shadows and motives deadlier than the guns that gunfire.Key insights include:How a staged fashion photograph can be a covert clue—and the importance of reverse photography in criminal puzzles. The psychology behind blackmail threats, staged crimes, and framing suspects—all in the Hollywood glare. The strategic moves Marlowe makes to outsmart killers and unearth the truth without getting caught himself. The critical role of small details, like a negative or a piece of clothing, in unraveling complex plots. How the case connects murder, syndicate tactics, and personal vendettas, revealing corruption woven into Hollywood's fabric. Why does it matter? Because in a city built on illusions, the real truth is obscured behind masks. Missing this lesson could mean overlooking crucial clues, allowing killers to walk free, or worse—becoming part of the Hollywood darkness yourself. This episode offers a window into detective work that balances wit, nerve, and razor-sharp observation, essential for any crime or noir fan looking to understand how the shadows hide the truth.Perfect for thriller enthusiasts, noir lovers, and anyone fascinated by the golden age of crime fiction—this is the Hollywood noir episode you can't afford to miss. Whether you're a seasoned sleuth or just love a good mystery, Marlowe's Hollywood adventure showcases how lies, love, and murder collide in the glitz and shadows of Tinseltown.[Dedicated to Raymond Chandler's timeless storytelling, staring the iconic Gerald Mohr, this episode captures the dark allure and deadly stakes of Philip Marlowe's world. Before the platinum records… before Metal Health changed heavy metal forever… there was a beginning — and not everyone remembers it the same way.In this episode, original bassist Kelly Garni tells his firsthand account of how Quiet Riot actually formed in early-70s Los Angeles. But the story longtime frontman Kevin DuBrow shared publicly over the years paints a very different picture. So which version is true?We dig into the conflicting origin stories, the friendships, the ambitions, and the mythology that formed one of the most important bands of the Sunset Strip era. Memory, ego, media narratives — and the passage of time — all collide as we try to separate rock history from rock legend. If you think you know how Quiet Riot started… you might not.Listen to Episode 358 - Kelly Garni: His Bond with Randy Rhoads & the Birth of Quiet Riot

Don and Dude keep the “I Love the 80s” tour rolling into 1984, when country music drifted back toward rootsy storytelling while heavy metal hit MTV in full glam mode. One of us spins a mother–daughter country debut rooted in acoustic instruments, Appalachian harmonies, and front‑porch intimacy, while the other cranks a Sunset Strip glam‑metal breakthrough of twin‑guitar riffs and big, arena‑ready hooks. Together, the albums show how 1984's country and metal both chased the mainstream yet stayed grounded in specific worlds: Kentucky kitchens and family conversations on one side, Hollywood alleys and neon‑lit clubs on the other. The AlbumsThe Judds – Why Not Me (1984) Naomi and Wynonna Judd's debut full‑length turns years of hard knocks and Nashville hustling into a lean set of neotraditional country songs that feel both radio‑ready and personal. Producer Brent Maher keeps the sound warm and spare, letting their harmonies carry stories of underdog longing, steady devotion, and working‑woman joy that helped nudge country back toward front‑porch intimacy.Ratt – Out of the Cellar (1984) Ratt's major‑label debut is a hook‑packed glam‑metal statement, mixing Sunset Strip grit with big choruses and Beau Hill's punchy production. Powered by Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby's dual guitars and Stephen Pearcy's raspy sneer, it turned “Round and Round” into an MTV staple and helped lock in the sound and look of mid‑80s glam metal.Diggin' AlbumsMegadeth – Megadeth (2026) Billed as their final studio album, this set folds classic Megadeth riffage into more reflective songs about age, legacy, and closing a long thrash chapter.Tina Turner – Private Dancer (1984) A towering comeback that blends rock grit, pop hooks, and R&B drama, anchored by a run of hits and Tina's mix of scars, power, and polish.PVA – No More Like This (2026) The London trio's second album pushes their dance‑punk into more tactile, exploratory territory, blurring club, bedroom, and art‑school energies.Squeeze – Trixies (2026) Squeeze finally cut songs first written in 1974, turning old cassette‑era ideas into a nightclub‑set concept piece full of wry, grown‑up pop storytelling.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“This was a music I had never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing. It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” – Antonio Salieri, played by F. Murray Abraham in 1984's Amadeus.
Is it a "Classic" or just "Classic Rock"? This month, we're hopping in the IROC and heading back exactly 40 years to January 1986. The synths were creeping in and the legends were at a crossroads. We're deep-diving into three major releases that defined the era: Ozzy Osbourne – The Ultimate Sin: Does Shot in the Dark still hit as hard without Daisley? Black Sabbath – Seventh Star: Was it a Sabbath album or a Tony Iommi solo project, or something else entirely? Quiet Riot – QR III: Can the kings of the Sunset Strip keep the momentum going? We're asking the tough question: Do these records still hold their weight in the modern era, or are they better left on the shelf? Join us as we settle the debate on whether these 1986 staples actually hold up today. Please leave a review and subscribe on your podcast platform. Corrections: Disagree?? Låttitlarna blir i stil med Engulfed in Steel och Drowned in Tar. Brutalt. Välkomna in! In this episode of Outside The Round, host Matt Burrill chops it up with rising country artist Bryan Andrews, a bold new voice out of Carrollton, Missouri. From his early days welding and dipping Skoal Wintergreen to blowing up on TikTok during the pandemic, Bryan shares his raw, unfiltered journey into country music. But what sets him apart isn't just the music—it's his willingness to speak openly about being a left-leaning artist in a genre dominated by conservative voices. Bryan dives into what it means to challenge the narrative from the inside, how he navigates small-town values with progressive ideals, and why he believes there's more room in country music for open-minded conversation than people think. With plenty of laughs, real talk, and a spotlight on his new single “Grizzly Can,” this one's for anyone who loves country music but doesn't always fit the mold. In this episode of Reading Is Funktamental, we discuss the long history and profound influence of a single song, “Hey Joe,” a tune that binds nearly every strand of 20th-century American popular music. “Hey Joe” was written sometime in the early 1960s by a man named Billy Roberts, an obscure singer and guitarist from South Carolina who moved to New York City, drawn by the burgeoning folk music scene in Greenwich Village. It was a time when original material was scarce, leading other singers to quickly adapt quality songs in the spirit of folk music's oral traditions. Thus began the long journey of “Hey Joe” from New York coffeehouses to the bars on L.A.'s Sunset Strip to the ears of a young guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, who launched his career with his radical, electrified interpretation. The story is related by Jason Schneider, author of That Gun In Your Hand, a new book that also presents previously unpublished information about the life of Billy Roberts, a shadowy figure whose 2017 death went unreported by all news outlets. For more, read my review at NYSMusic.com https://nysmusic.com/2025/10/20/the-strange-saga-of-hey-joe-revealed/ "Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour podcast and radio show about great books written about music and music-makers. On the 6th Nightmare Before Christmas… The Sunset Strip was famous for music, bright lights, and big stars, but in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it also became the hunting ground for Douglas Clark and Carol Bundy. They seemed like a normal couple, but behind closed doors, they were obsessed with control and murder. Together, they lured young women and committed terrible crimes that shook the city. Carol's love for Douglas and his dark urges made them a dangerous team. Their account shows how quickly obsession can turn deadly. They brought nightmares to a place where dreams are made. Dara has a new podcast with long-time friend of the pod, Troy McEady! Listen to one of their new episodes, "I'm with Her! (Lindsay, Paris, and Britney, that is...)" Troy and Dara deep dive into the Vanity Fair article, "I'm With Her!" by Nancy Jo Sales, which takes a closer look at some of the ghoulish +1's of the Sunset Strip... because behind every successful young celebutante is a man draining her of her money and spirit. This piece paints a vivid picture of the 2007 class of Hollywood High. It's Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Ashlee Simpson, Mary Kate Olsen, and the men who loved to yell at them on the sidewalk outside of Les Deux, like Kevin Federline, Brandon "Greasy Bear" Davis, Cisco Adler, Wilmer Valderrama, The Good Charlotte Twins, Harry Morton, and Pete Wentz. Hugh Grant infamously almost tanked his budding movie career when he was caught with a sex worker on the Sunset Strip. He was arrested a second time when he assaulted paparazzi outside his house…with a Tupperware container full of baked beans. But perhaps most shocking of all, he wore a wire to interview a tabloid reporter and wound up cracking open a phone-hacking case that implicated both the London police and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
