In this episode of Word Balloon, I sit down with longtime DC writer and historian Bob Rozakis for a deep dive into his Bronze Age experiences writing Robin, Teen Titans, Superman, and more during one of the most transitional eras in comics history. Bob reflects on crafting character-driven stories at a time when DC was recalibrating its identity, sharing behind-the-scenes insight into working with iconic heroes while balancing continuity, editorial demands, and the evolving tastes of readers in the 1970s and early '80s. From Robin back-ups to Titans team drama and Superman tales, Bob paints a vivid picture of what it was like working inside DC when the Bronze Age was firing on all cylinders. We also revisit one of the most unique chapters in DC lore, when Bob literally drove the DC Comics promotional “mobile” around New York and New Jersey hand-selling books like a Good Humor ice cream man.He shares stories of being there when Christopher Reeve judged a Superman movie contest at DC, capturing that moment when comics and Hollywood suddenly collided in a big way. Bob offers candid memories of the DC Implosion. What it felt like from the inside as titles were slashed and uncertainty hit the staff, and how creators adapted during a turbulent stretch in the company's history. We also discuss his fascinating alternate-history essays published in Alter Ego, where Bob imagines a world in which DC and All-American Comics never consolidated the way they did. It's a smart, playful exploration of “what if” publishing scenarios from someone who knows the real history inside and out.

DCU CONTINUES!! Supergirl Trailer Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, Theories, & Full DCU Spoiler Review! Greg Alba, John Humphrey, and Roxy Striar dive into the brand-new Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow trailer from James Gunn's DCU, breaking down every shot, character tease, cosmic detail, and emotional moment. We explore how Kara Zor-El / Supergirl (Milena Tscharntke) is being reimagined as a fierce, battle-worn wanderer, her bond with Krypto the Superdog, her mission of vengeance, and how this story pulls directly from the award-winning comic by Tom King & Bilquis Evely. We talk the DCU tone shift, new costume design, the sword imagery, space-western vibes, and how this version of Kara contrasts with Superman (David Corenswet) in Superman: Legacy — plus potential ties to Brainiac, Lobo, the Czarnian Empire, The Woman of Tomorrow villain group, and DC cosmic lore. We also cover all confirmed DCU Chapter One: Gods & Monsters projects including Superman, The Authority, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Peacemaker Season 2, Creature Commandos, and every rumored future film (including Teen Titans, Justice League, and Lanterns). This trailer gives us massive tone, lore, and character clues, so we deep-dive into every frame while reacting to the emotional beats, the stunning cinematography, the fight choreography, alien worlds, and that needle-drop moment set to “Call Me” by Blondie. From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)

Welcome to From Crisis to Crisis Classic! Because of the original feed getting lost due to financial considerations I (Michael) decided to start representing them on this feed to give them a new home since people still seem to be finding them.  Note before listening...check out the original release date below if you hear something that sounds kind of off or doesn't align with the social norms of today. Or if the audio quality isn't up to snuff of what you'd hear from this show today. These epsiodes are represented as they were first released. No editing. No George Lucas style revamps. I'm doing this mainly because I want to retain the original feel of the episodes and also because...well, I'm lazy. Episode 3 - January 1987 Original Release Date - May 26, 2009 Original Show Notes This week your hosts, Michael Bailey and Jeffrey Taylor, examine the books that came out with the cover date of January 1987, the first month of regular Superman comics after Man of Steel.  In Superman #1 a certain criminal with a heart of Kryptonite makes his initial Post Crisis appearance while over in Adventures of Superman #424 we get our first look at a certain gossip columnist that has eyes for a mild mannered reporter.  Finally there's Action Comics #584, which features Superman running amok in Metropolis with only the Teen Titans to try and stop him.

It's the biggest upset of the year - we both like this four episode spin-off of the miserable show What If...?. It's true, this one kinda nails it and does the sort of big comic book worldbuilding we want more of in the MCU, all while killing off a bunch of characters at every twist and turn. Before that: does the Punisher have a Robin? Derek mostly liked that Ed Gein show. Marv Wolfman writes the Teen Titans to be very very mean. And what's the dumbest story in the Bible? In the highly unlikely scenario that you don't care about any of that, skip to 51:27.Next week: HBO's Watchmen TV show rewatch begins!

Our patron rootbeercutie recommended I Am Not Starfire and since we had somehow not done a graphic novel in the 10 years of this podcast, Chris stepped up to tackle this Teen Titans spinoff. Today's episode features a whole lot of superhero tropes and parent/child strife; even good art and a lesbian protagonist who gets a happy ending couldn't save this one, though.

In this special crossover episode of Men of Steel, we kick off a two-part team-up with the Long Live the Legion podcast! We're diving into “Foundations,” the early 2000s arc from The Legion—with special guests Jim and Jay from LLtL and the artist of the arc himself, Chris Batista! Together, we explore Superman's legacy in the 31st century, the evolving identity of the Legion, and what it was like illustrating this future-forward storyline. Part 2 continues on Long Live the Legion—don't miss it! Overview Case Aiken introduces crossover episode, featuring Jmike Folson, Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and Chris Batista discussing the Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, celebrating its 45th anniversary. The plot centers on Darkseid snatching people from time to harness dark matter, with the Legion uncovering Superboy during the investigation. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the core writing team; their earlier success with Marvel's cosmic stories enhances credibility. Chris Batista expresses concern over technology portrayal, advocating for a more advanced depiction of the Legion compared to Justice League. The Legion World headquarters is praised for its futuristic elements like replicated home worlds and teleportation gates. Despite rising sales and positive fan response, the series faced cancellation, causing frustration as issue 25 became the second-best selling of the series with a 25% readership increase. Character designs for the Servants of Darkness were mostly created by Chris Batista, with a conscious effort to maintain Kirby's aesthetic. Superboy's dual role as both Legion member and connection to Titans was anticipated, reflecting long-time fan expectations for character involvement. Kid Quantum is recognized as the first female leader of color in the Legion, showcasing character dynamics and development alongside Cosmic Boy. The evolution of Superboy's design aimed to match Teen Titans appearances, highlighting editorial influence on character aesthetics.   Notes ️ Podcast Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 02:09) Case Aiken introduces the Men of Steel podcast crossover episode with Long Live the Legion podcast, featuring co-host Jmike Folson and guests Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and artist Chris Batista. Discussion focuses on Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, specifically issue 25 which serves as both story continuation and 45th anniversary celebration. Chris Batista reveals behind-the-scenes details about working as lead artist on the arc, noting DC doesn't produce this Legion continuity anymore so he can speak freely. Story Overview and Context (02:09 - 09:54) Jmike Folson summarizes the Foundations plot: people being snatched from time by Darkseid to steal dark matter for restarting Apokolips, with Legion discovering Superboy during investigation of warp phantoms. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the writing team, with connections drawn to their later successful Marvel cosmic work including Guardians of the Galaxy. Legion Lost miniseries and Legion Worlds established crucial backstory, with 25 issues of world-building leading to this commemorative arc. ️ Technology and World-Building Discussion (09:54 - 16:05) Chris Batista expresses frustration with Paul Levitz rejecting advanced technology concepts for Legion, arguing they should appear far more advanced than Justice League. Legion World headquarters praised as major advancement - a planet with replicated home worlds and teleportation gates, making Legion feel appropriately futuristic. Discussion of how DNA run embraced technological advancement while previous runs kept Legion at similar tech level to 20th century heroes. Character Design and Development (01:01:03 - 01:24:10) Chris reveals Servants of Darkness designs were largely his creation except for Orion, with specific mentions of including Firestorm, White Martian, Lobo, Green Lantern, and Big Barda. Orion design intentionally modeled after Destroyer from Thor, maintaining Kirby aesthetic while creating intimidating servant appearance. Invisible Kid and Brainiac 5 romantic moment revealed as editor Steve Wacker's spontaneous addition 'just to mess with fans' - became lasting fan discussion point. Publishing History and Cancellation (01:24:16 - 01:59:06) Series cancellation explained as sudden higher-up decision despite rising sales and positive fan response to Superboy addition. Issue 25 was second-best selling of entire series with 25% increase in readership, making cancellation timing particularly frustrating. Original plans included Superboy remaining in both Legion and Titans simultaneously, with extensive story arcs planned for Element Lad return and Lightning Lad separation. Artist Collaboration and Creative Process (20:40 - 01:19:06) Chris describes working relationship with DNA as collaborative, with writers trusting him to design new characters like Legion cadets and including Easter eggs like Kent Shakespeare and Polar Boy. Multiple pencillers used for issue 25 to handle commemorative scope, with each artist assigned specific character groups to avoid overlap. Coloring technology evolution discussed, with modern computer coloring providing more tools but potentially reducing creative necessity of older 64-color process limitations. ⏳ Superman Connection and Time Travel Elements (34:02 - 01:54:06) Clark Kent and 90s Superboy both featured as characters pulled from time, with Clark becoming servant of darkness while Superboy joins Legion. Superboy wears classic costume with Legion belt buckle addition, fulfilling long-time fan expectations while serving story purposes. Time dilation plot involves universe getting smaller and past being erased, though hosts acknowledge the temporal mechanics don't fully make sense. Character Relationships and Dynamics (46:03 - 01:30:24) Mech (Lightning Lord) rehabilitation storyline discussed as more complex than typical villain treatment, showing struggle between evil nature and love for siblings. Kid Quantum established as Legion's first female leader of color, with organic romantic relationship with Cosmic Boy developing throughout arc. Livewire/Element Lad fusion creates extremely powerful character combining lightning abilities with matter transmutation in crystalline body. Technical and Production Details (01:36:23 - 01:51:38) Secret Files issue placement in continuity questioned due to timeline inconsistencies with main story events. Chris notes Superboy's physical design evolution throughout arc as editorial mandated size increases to match Teen Titans appearance. Force field technology and advanced Legion equipment discussed as properly futuristic elements that should distinguish team from contemporary heroes.

The discourse presented in this episode explores the contrasting realms of the Teen Titans and the Justice League of America, ultimately aiming to uncover the merits inherent within both factions. Within the structure of our "Finding the Good..." series, we delve into these two prominent superhero teams, recognizing that while they exist in the same universe, they evoke distinct allegiances among fans. The conversation, led by Kevin Schaeffer and Christian Ashley, elucidates the origins, character dynamics, and the narrative significance of both groups. They examine the familial bonds that define the Teen Titans, juxtaposed with the established gravitas of the Justice League. This analysis not only seeks to celebrate the idiosyncrasies of each team but also addresses the broader theme of polarization within fandoms, fostering a nuanced appreciation for both sides of this illustrious comic book dichotomy.A comprehensive examination of the contrasting dynamics between the Justice League and the Teen Titans reveals much about the nature of heroism within the DC Universe. The Justice League, often portrayed as the pinnacle of superheroic endeavor, features iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, who embody ideals of strength, valor, and responsibility. Through their collective efforts, the Justice League addresses threats that jeopardize global stability, thus establishing a model of teamwork predicated on mutual respect and shared goals. However, this very framework can lead to perceptions of the League members as distant figures, engaging more as colleagues than as a cohesive familial unit.Conversely, the Teen Titans present a contrasting narrative, one that emphasizes the significance of camaraderie and personal relationships. The Titans, comprised of youthful heroes navigating the challenges of adolescence while confronting formidable foes, cultivate a familial bond that transcends mere association. Their adventures are punctuated by moments of shared laughter, conflict, and emotional growth, emphasizing not only their superhuman abilities but also their human vulnerabilities. This interplay of personal dynamics enriches the narrative, as each member's journey is intricately tied to their relationships with one another, fostering a deep sense of loyalty and commitment. This juxtaposition between the Justice League and the Teen Titans not only highlights the diversity of heroism within the DC Universe but also underscores the importance of personal connections in defining what it means to be a hero. While the Justice League exemplifies the ideal of adult heroism, the Teen Titans resonate with audiences through their relatable struggles and the emotional depth of their friendships, ultimately suggesting that true heroism is found in both strength and vulnerability.Takeaways: The episode explores the dynamic between the Teen Titans and the Justice League of America, highlighting their unique qualities and contributions to the DC universe. Kevin and Christian delve into their personal experiences and connections with both superhero teams, showing how these characters have influenced their lives. A significant focus is placed on the family dynamics of the Teen Titans, emphasizing the emotional bonds that unite them beyond mere heroics. The discussion acknowledges how both teams have evolved over time, reflecting on the importance of mentorship from older heroes to younger ones in the DC universe. .We discuss all this and more in this one! Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios may be sitting out of this weekend's storied San Diego Comic Hall H, but that hasn't stopped the big news and updates from pouring in. First, last week in a huge move, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige invited a small group of journalists to Marvel Studios' offices where he laid out the future for the next 5 to 7 years for the MCU. The biggest takeaway, arguably, was Feige's cagey hints regarding a likely reset to the universe during the events of Secret Wars, saying, “Reboot is a scary word; Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines.” Other tidbits from Feige's comments include a commitment to recasting the X-Men with new actors for their post Secret Wars film, an update on the Mahershala Ali-led Blade film and Sony's mandate that they stay away from a live action Miles Morales until the conclusion of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy. In Marvel news that looks to the more immediate future, director Matt Shakman shared that John Malkovich's role and performance as the Red Ghost has been removed from The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, which opens this week!Superman continues to live up to its name when it comes to its performance, as the superhero flick passed $409 million at the global box office in its second weekend of release. The $58 million second weekend, which is a respectable -54% drop from the opening weekend, is in keeping with 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine and bodes favorably compared to other recent releases from the comic book genre; plus coupled with other wins like A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, the latest success has helped Warner Bros become 2025's top earning studio with $1.32 billion in ticket sales. In other news, Variety confirmed Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira has been tapped to pen the Wonder Woman reboot for the DCU in addition to being attached to a live action Teen Titans project for the studio.Lots and lots of trailers hit the interwebs last week, lets run them down and talk about ‘em:Alien: EarthPredator: BadlandsTron: AresStranger Things S5Mortal Kombat IIChristopher Nolan made history by putting tickets on sale for The Odyssey exactly one year before the film's release, marking the first time any movie tickets have sold a full year in advance. The early sales were exclusively for IMAX 70mm screenings at select theaters, supporting Nolan's epic adaptation of the Greek myth that is being shot entirely on IMAX film cameras with a $250 million budget.Hulu announced that Futurama Season 13 will switch from its recent weekly release format to an all-at-once binge drop, with all 10 episodes premiering simultaneously on September 15 at 5 p.m. PT. The change marks a departure from the weekly rollout used for Seasons 11 and 12.Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to star in Robert Eggers' upcoming werewolf horror film Werwulf, with Lily-Rose Depp in talks to join the project in what would reunite the Nosferatu co-stars. Nintendo and Sony's live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealing the casting choices alongside first-look photos on social media. Taika Waititi is attached to direct a new feature film take on British comic book character Judge Dredd. Drew Pearce, the scribe known for Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is attached to write the script.Disney's live action Lilo and Stitch has become the first film of 2025 to pass the $1 billion dollar mark at the international box office.Nearly five years after Netflix entered into a content agreement with Ubisoft, the streamer has ordered an Assassin's Creed live-action series, based on the best-selling video game franchise. The project will be created, showrun, and executive produced by Roberto Patino and David Wiener.

He was eventually promoted to the rank of master chief gunnery officer and transferred to the Death Star. Tenn was ecstatic about this at first; he was a staunch supporter of the Empire who reveled in the opportunity to wield such a powerful weapon. He did not expect it to actually be used against inhabited planets. He assumed that the Empire only built it as a fear tactic, which was partially true, but Grand Moff Tarkin believed that the greatest way to inspire fear was to make an example of Alderaan. As soon as Tenn fired the superlaser, he was wracked with guilt and suffered a mental breakdown. With the pull of a lever, he had wiped out two billion lives.

Read transcriptHold onto your utility belts and prepare for maximum overdrive, because this week on Play Comics we're crash-landing straight into the chaotic world of Teen Titans for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube – a game that somehow managed to capture the essence of being a superhero teenager while simultaneously making you question whether saving the world is worth the carpel tunnel. Released in 2006, this beat-'em-up bonanza promised players the chance to live out their fantasies of being part of the most dysfunctional yet lovable superhero team this side of Titans Tower. Joining us for this digital adventure through Jump City's finest is none other than Eilish Pickett from my friendly neighborhood comic shop – a true connoisseur of all things four-color and someone who's probably seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a Cyborg system malfunction. Together, we'll dive deep into whether this particular pixelated punch-fest managed to do justice to the beloved Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003 to 2006, or if it ended up being more disappointing than Beast Boy's attempt at stand-up comedy. From Robin's acrobatic staff-spinning to Raven's dark magic mayhem, this game promised to let you switch between all five Titans in real-time while delivering the kind of cooperative chaos that only comes from trying to coordinate a superhero team where one member transforms into animals and another shoots laser beams from her eyes. Whether you're here for the nostalgic trip back to simpler times when the biggest worry was whether Starfire would accidentally destroy the kitchen again, or you're just curious about how well this adaptation stacked up against the source material, grab your communicator and settle in. This episode is guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Cyborg try to explain why his breakfast took up half the grocery budget, and definitely more coherent than trying to follow Beast Boy's logic during a heated argument about tofu. Learn such things as: Has there been another rotating team in comics that so ironically across the board has the same lineup? What happens when you just can't find the main villain in the game? How do you limit the power sets of characters who have basically unlimited power sets? And so much more! You can find Eilish on Tumbler @aliceheart247 if you really want to. But mostly just figure out where I live and go to my local comic shop.
