In The Witness Files – Case 02: Behind the Black Windows, a family shares a deeply disturbing true paranormal story from their time living in Tunis, Tunisia, involving shadow figures, oppressive atmospheres, and terrifying unexplained encounters inside a rented house. From the very first viewing, something felt wrong. Sharon Mesguich is a French, Tunisian, and Algerian belly dance artist, teacher, and festival organizer known for her dynamic stage presence and deep connection to Egyptian style. Introduced to oriental arts from a young age, she discovered belly dance in 1999 and has since built an international career, performing at major venues and events while teaching across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and beyond. She trained extensively in Egypt with renowned masters such as Dina, Mahmoud Reda, and Mayodi, shaping her musicality, technique, and expressive style. On this day in 1943, the actions of young 28th Māori battalion solider, Lance Sergeant Haane Manahi, changed the course of World War II in North Africa. Just before midnight, Manahi led a group of soldiers up a vertical cliff to capture the Tunisian town of Takrouna from Axis powers - he took hundreds of prisoners, carried injured comrades down the mountain and protected locals from danger. Up until now, Haane's story has largely been kept alive through his descendants but it's now been turned into a film. Sgt. Haane was directed by Tearepa Kahi and stars Alex Tarrant - and the pair are committed to bringing this story to life. "I knew there were things about his story that were familiar, and when you're a storyteller, you want to get off the beaten track and into the unknown world. Wendy Eisenberg – Take A Number [Joyful Noise/Bandcamp] Wendy Eisenberg – Curious Bird [Joyful Noise/Bandcamp] We’ve heard from brilliant guitarist, sometime banjoist, songwriter, improviser & composer Wendy Eisenberg in many contexts in the last couple of years: there’s the amazing postpunk/art-rock trio Editrix, Bill Orcutt’s Guitar Quartet, their avant-garde songwriting collaboration with Caroline Davis, and most recently their appearance on their now-partner Mari More Eaze Rubio’s brilliant solo album sentence structure in the country. But the highlight for me remains Eisenberg’s breathtaking final track, “In The Pines”, from their 2024 album Viewfinder. So for all their jazz guitar chops and restless experimentation, I’m already primed to love Eisenberg’s most pure songwriting on this album. There’s definitely a statement in self-titling a mid-career album, and Wendy Eisenberg presents as a straightforward album of songwriterly storytelling, deeply grounded in their newfound love with Mari Rubio. There’s definitely more than a little country in these songs, as well as folk-revivalist styles from Britain, Appalachia etc, but whatever genre, Wendy’s particular melodic sensibility comes through. Supporting this, however, are the utterly essential, sumptuous string arrangements from Mari Rubio, who also co-produced the album with Eisenberg and added pedal steel and synths. With longtime bandmates Trevor Dunn on bass (known for Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, many John Zorn-related lineups etc) and Ryan Sawyer on drums (of too many collaborations including a time in At The Drive-In and long-ago UFog faves Stars Like Fleas), there’s a homely feel to these songs, songs which contemplate identity, life’s trajectory, past trauma and coming into a hard-won happiness. Margareth Kammerer – Gift [Ftarri/Bandcamp] Margareth Kammerer – Amor [Ftarri/Bandcamp] Weirdly, when I did my DJ set for Art After Hours/Liquid Architecture/Sydney Biennale in March (stream it here) I decided to play a track by Berlin-based Italian singer & composer Margareth Kammerer, and only a day or two later I discovered that she’d just released a new album, The Garden. I’ve been a fan of hers since, I would say, the mid 2000s, when she released the extraordinary album To Be an Animal of Real Flesh, full of odd, experimental songs. Following a few years later came two wonderful, mysterious albums with The Magic I.D., a quartet with Christof Kurzmann on electronics and vocals next to her own guitar & vocals, and the two clarinettists, Kai Fagaschinski & Michael Thieke, who also play bewitching, alien music as The International Nothing. So it’s reasonable to say she’s been deconstructing and re-examining songform for some decades by now. Released by Japanese label Ftarri (also a tiny experimental music venue & store in Tokyo), The Garden is of a piece with her earlier albums – the last of which came out a mere 12 years ago… Her oddly beautiful songs are supported by many important fellow travellers including our own Chris Abrahams of The Necks etc, double-bassist/electronicist Werner Dafeldecker, experimental musician Valerio Tricoli and experimental cellist Bo Wiget. I remain in awe. Espen Reinertsen – Til noens dype muskelvev [SusannaSonata/Bandcamp] Espen Reinertsen – Skal jeg følge deg til havet [SusannaSonata/Bandcamp] What astonishing beauty to stumble upon without warning! Espen Reinertsen is a name I’ve known for a while, as his saxophone and woodwinds – or his mixing skills – are credited on many a Norwegian release, including those from Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Erik Honoré, Kim Myhr, Jenny Hval and Christian Wallumrød Ensemble. But these are his own songs, with sparse live drums and drum machines, sparse keyboards and gorgeous woodwind & trumpet arrangements which frequently shift into unexpected voicings and harmonies. You’ll hear a lot of Radiohead here – albeit more jazz-informed – but it’s also one of those rare cases when the post-rock-as-in-Talk-Talk tag is completely justified. Reinertsen’s melodies are simple until they spin off into some harmonically distant galaxy, and his layers of woodwinds are delicately emotive, merging invisibly with synthesizers just as Erik Nylander’s acoustic drums somehow have the precision of drum machines and also the sparkle of jazz drums. What a blessing. Marianna Sangita Angeletaki Røe & Trondheim Jazz Orchestra – Kori [Puritone/Bandcamp] So, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra are a collective with a varying lineup of Norwegian improvising musicians, who enlist different musicians to collaborate with them, with reliably extraordinary results. On this album, they work with Greek-Norwegian singer & composer Marianna Sangita Angeletaki Røe, who has titled the album ΣΠΙΤΙ (SPITI), which is Greek for “Home”. Marianna Sangita explores her own search for belonging, caught between two very different places, and she sings in four different languages: Norwegian, Greek, English, and Sámi, the latter being a people indigenous to the Sápmi region across northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and part of Russia. The music, too, draws from many different traditions, with Greece’s proximity to the area Europeans call the “Middle East” evident in its traditional musical forms, and the combined vocals of Sangita, Ina Sagstuen and Sissel Vera Pettersen (and other musicians at times) evoking Eastern European musics as much as Nordic. The musicianship is uniformly brilliant, the songs sparkling, moving, joyful. Highly recommended. Mayssa Jallad – Taamir (Bahriyyeh) [Ruptured Records/Bandcamp] A few years back, Beirut label Ruptured put out an amazing album by Lebanese singer/songwriter and researcher Mayssa Jallad called Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels. In touching experimental songs, Jallad chronicled the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, in which Christian Nationalists and pro-Palestinian leftists fought a violent battle amongst the high-rise hotels in Beirut, leading to the Green Line dividing the city, a rift that lasted for 15 years. Since then the album has been remixed in spectral dub fashion by Civilistjävel!, and in 2024 Mayssa created a stunning piece about a Palestinian woman displaced from her village in the Nakba. That single was created out of an instrumental track by Tunefork Studios & Ruptured Records’ Fadi Tabbal, and her new song “Taamir (Bahriyyeh)” is a musical collaboration with Tabbal, featuring drums from Postcards & SANAM‘s Pascal Semerdjian. Jallad is an urban researcher as well as a musician, and urban history is the basis of all these works. This song is about the Taamir social housing project, built in the wake of a destructive earthquake in 1956. By the time the project started, the Ain el Helwe refugee camp had already existed for 8 years, and the juxtaposition of Palestinian refugees, unfortunates who lost their homes in the earthquake, and those more fortunate, is explored by Jallad in this moving, experimental piece, with rumbling, clattering drones and field recordings surrounding Jallad’s voice. Radwan Ghazi Moumneh & Frédéric D. Oberland – Squeal Of Swine خنخنة خنازير [Constellation/Bandcamp] Montreal’s storied Constellation label here brings together a Canadian and French artist for their first duo work. Radwan Ghazi Moumneh has been deeply involved in the Montreal postrock & experimental music in Quebec for over 2 decades, and he’s the co-owner of the mighty Hotel2Tango, originally a performance & artists’ space co-run by members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion, but his main musical outlet has been Jerusalem In My Heart, begun as an audiovisual project with Erin Weisgerber, with Moumneh’s stunning melismatic vocals fed through granular processing to create a contemporary Arabic music ahead of its time in the mid-2010s. Frédéric D. Oberland is a key figure in Paris’s psych & avant-rock scenes, although he also began making films on Super8 & video. Among many bands & collaborations, he leads the incredible Oiseaux-Tempête, a collective whose music draws on psych, krautrock, postpunk and electronic music, with many collaborators and a deep connection to SWANA artists. Moumneh & Oberland had worked together via Oiseaux-Tempête and other projects, but had long intended to collaborate as a duo. Some works were started at Hotel2Tango in 2023, but as Moumneh puts it, since the genocide began he’d experienced sever writer’s block, so he took himself off to Paris in 2024 to complete the work. Four of the seven tracks do feature Moumneh’s voice, but here it’s Oberland taking more of a driver’s seat. Nevertheless, as well as Moumneh’s pain-filled voice Moumneh plays both buzuk and rababa, and there’s daf in the mix along with lots of electronic drones, drum machines and Oberland’s sax and clarineau. This is immersive music of great emotion. Maryam Saleh – Nedaa نداء [Simsara Records/Bandcamp] I first heard Egyptian singer Maryam Saleh as part of the magnificent trio release Lekhfa back in 2017. There, Saleh’s voice combined with the voice and instruments of Palestinian-Egyptian musician Tamer Abu Ghazaleh and the production wizardry and music of Maurice Louca – a masterpiece of Arabic indie music. As far as I can see, her new album, coming some 9 years later, is her first since that collaboration. Produced by Maurice Louca, it also features multiple instruments and creative mentoring from Paris-based Palestinian musician Kamilya Jubran, who founded the organisation Zamkara in Paris to support artistic projects. After three years of development, the result is Syrr سِرّ, the Arabic word for secret, which also happens to be the name Saleh gave her daughter. The album is imprinted by heavy events in Saleh’s life, particularly post-natal depression and divorce. Released by Sarah El Miniawy‘s Simsara Records, this is a creative take on Arabic music, leaning into trip-hop at times, into acoustic instrumentation at other times, carried by Saleh’s beautifully expressive voice and the confident hands of Jubran and Louca, and the impeccable musicianship of the other instrumentalists who join them. But one of the highlights is “Nafas نفَس”, in which Saleh is accompanied solely by Jubran’s oud and exquisitely-harmonised vocal shadows from the two of them. All in all, not to be missed! Taroug – Sirocco [Denovali/Bandcamp] On his second album with Denovali Records, Chott, Düsseldorf-based Tunisian musician Taroug (aka Tarek Zarroug) presents a highly varied mixture of styles. When Zarroug wants to make beat-based bass music, he hits all the right production notes with a healthy dose of north African percussion, while elsewhere there’s dreamy postrock with vocals by the artist himself. Honestly it’s uncanny how the album flits between genres, displaying Zarroug’s ancestry here, slipping into UK bass there or indie guitar music elsewhere. A really impressive album. Wraz. – Twist [Deep Dark & Dangerous/Bandcamp] Rites, the second full album from Montreal dubstep master Wraz., is released through Deep Dark & Dangerous, the label run by New Zealand’s longstanding dubstep duo Truth. As usual, heavyweight dubstep gear, sci-fi aesthetics, surprising melodies… Battery Operated – Stutter [YUKU/Bandcamp] Battery Operated – Casting Shadows [YUKU/Bandcamp] It should be obvious by now that YUKU delivers the goods, but here they are again with something insanely great. The artist behind Battery Operated is also known as PS95, an outlet for mangled jungle breaks that draws our attention to the fact that the Playstation was launched in 1995, the heyday of jungle. On the other hand, Battery Operated has thus far been an alias for deliciously lo-fi tape loops – see their Instagram for videos of their beautifully-modded cassettes & players. But the debut Battery Operated album for YUKU, TYPE I, combines these two strands in stunning fashion. From what I can tell, PS95 & the recording artist Battery Operated are the same person, but the tape loop “art” projects are done with his brother. So this ain’t dance music, not primarily, but nor is it dreamy loop-jelly. Breaks surface from tape hiss, tape loop experiments are layered & sequenced into melodies and sonic narratives, often sounding like a half-analogue/half-digital current-day version of IDM. Wonderful. Thugwidow – IT DIDN’T NEED EXPLAINING [Thugwidow Bandcamp] Thugwidow – pristine heart [Thugwidow Bandcamp] Jungle may be having a renaissance right now, with no end in sight, but Welsh producer Alex Lowther-Harris was on the jungle train way before most. The first Thugwidow releases were around 2017, and for a few years he was fiercly prolific, released mostly on cassette and digital, with a couple of CDs and some vinyl further down the track. His lo-fi early work gave way to slicker production chops as time went on, and the creative firehose slowed by around 2021-22. So it was a joyful shock to see something new appear on his bandcamp, only… it’s a swan song? Yes, SWUN SUNGZ does do what its title suggests, but it also shows that this prolific artist had more up his sleeve – it’s just that the pleasure had drained from it, he was feeling stuck… So here’s *ahem* 121 tracks, going for almost 11½ hours, and there’s a lot of quality material here, including a bunch of collaborations, and productions ranging from hardcore jungle-techno to advanced rhythm science. It’s a helluva way to go out! Note also that not only is all the money likely going to the British bird & wildlife charity RSPB, but he says most of his earnings from the project were always given away to charity. CRZKNY – 009 [Virgin Babylon Records] Japanese experimental electronic producer CRZKNY (which I’ve just learned stands for “CRAZY KENNY”) has brushed shoulders with experimental genre-mashing legend (and seminal UFog artist) World’s End Girlfriend before, on WEG productions and on his label Virgin Babylon, but this is a bit of a special release – a bit like Thugwidow’s above, this is a massive collection of unreleased tunes, here all just numbered as they’re pieces that CRZKNY has played at the Nagoya club GOODWEATHER. CZRKNY put this collection together to help support the club’s founder Eri Ishii after she suffered both an aortic dissection and a cerebral thrombosis, leaving her in a coma for some weeks. She is now on a long road of rehabilitation, and CRZKNY wants to give back to a person who built this perfect live space for his music. Lots of great techno, including glitchy shit and tasty breakbeats, for a good cause. deafkids – CICATRIZES [Neurot Recordings/Bandcamp] Brazilian band deafkids may nominally be classed as “punk”, but hardcore punk mixes with industrial and noise in their sound, along with electronic music of all shapes. They released the incredible uncategorizable Metaprogramação on Neurosis‘ Neurot Recordings in 2019, and then when the pandemic hit, they put out a series of EPs that mixed Latin rhythmic complexity with guitar pedal and software experimentation, collected now on the album Ritos do Colapso. Except before that in 2020 came their collaboration DEAFBRICK with cross-continental noise-metal-industrial-electronic duo PETBRICK. So with various collabs and oddities in the interim, their forthcoming CICATRIZES DO FUTURO (Scars of the Future) is their first album proper since Metaprogramação. It looks to be more electronic, more intense, more angry than ever, a visceral reaction to the state of the world. Highly rhythmic and danceable, it shifts between hardcore punk, industrial, Latin American and club sounds with abandon. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing. Lint – Balsam of Peru [Lint Bandcamp] OK so, you know, like Scattered Order? A band who I have referred to in the past as “Sydney postpunk/post-industrial/experimental electronic legends”. Mitch Jones is a founding member of said legendary band, active since the early ’80s or possibly slightly earlier, post-etc as described above. Drusilla Johnson aka Dru Jones has been a member of said legendary band at times, and has contributed some brilliant artwork in various phases of their existence. She’s also Mitch’s wife, and they live now in Mt Victoria, in the Blue Mountains on Dharug and Gundungurra country, and at times they release music together as Lint. It’s instinctual, artistic, splashes of colour washed over detailed line drawings… It’s the sound of Air in the taps, but it’s also the sound of over four decades building and trashing and rebuilding a musical language, and you can hear it in every dialogue sample and every wonky beat and the occasional guitar noise solo. It’s so lovely to have a seemingly endless font of new music from these folks in many changing combinations. Roman Rofalski – Ondine (radio edit 1) [Puddle Label/Bandcamp] Last time we heard from German pianist Roman Rofalski – only a few weeks ago – he was deconstructing his piano… again, following his wonderful Fractal from 2024, which shredded piano and prepared piano into constellations of granular sound and rhythm. Ravel Reimagined does just what it tells you – but to be clear, Rofalski does it really well. Over four tracks, Rofalski excerpts four celebrated piano works by the beloved impressionist composer and deconstructs them – and it’s notable that these are live performances, with Rofalski playing grand piano and simultaneously sampling himself, then reworking phrases into loops & glitchy constructions, overlaying them with synths and even beats at times. Maurice Ravel was famously prickly, was not fond of the borrowed artistic term of “impressionism” being used for his music (nor was his elder, Debussy), and was underappreciated in his time. He’s also one of my favourite composers, who I believe advanced composition in directions hitherto unimagined. Rofalski’s extrapolations push Ravel far beyond his imaginings, and it’s quite likely he would be horrified to hear what’s been done to his pieces – but now we’re imagining a composer unmoored by over a century from his origins; these prickly pieces require decades of context to situate them here and now. The virtuosic pianism outlining harmonies full of augmented and diminished intervals, whole-tone scales, melodies woven through corruscating hemidemisemiquavers (hear the original here) are thrown immediately into digital reverberation and gradual distortion until they’re glitched and chopped, then crash into long-ringing tones, a fragmented sample bleating around Ravel’s melody as the piece comes to a close. Bravo. OD – Arrival [Driftworks/Bandcamp] Alex O’Donovan is a recording & mixing engineer, but as OD he makes his own music. On Svalr, O’Donovan documents time spent in Svalbard, an island archipelago in the Arctic which is also home to Norway’s Global Seed Vault (the subject of another beautiful sound work by Ecker & Meulyzer). This album is part of a new project called SITE, co-curated by Audiobulb and Driftworks. O’Donovan took extensive field recordings of the diversity of natural sounds (including glaciers!) as well as the built environment, and found commonalities in all these sounds that formed the basis of his compositions. Remote as it is, Svalbard is inevitably encroached upon by anthrogenic climate change, and as the EP goes on, the sounds of water & ice & animals are swept up in almost industrial impulses, and glitched beat constructions. OD’s Svalr makes compelling music around its highly engaging field recordings. Sandscape – half closed eyes [Octopoda Records/Bored of Works/Bandcamp] Sudanese-Scottish “ethereal grunger” Eliza Shaddad and screen composer Daniel Sonabend team up as Sandscape on the forthcoming album Phenomenology, and first single “half closed eyes” is like hearing a dusty 7″ record playing in a different room of your house – a beguiling piece of ambient-dub-jazz with both artists’ vocals, soft but saturated piano, and muffled drumming from Liam Hutton. Unexpected harmonisations flow over the looping music, but not long after it fades away like a dream – “half closed eyes” indeed. The album promises noise-laden trip-hop, muffled jazz and an exploration of the mixed Arab/British/Jewish heritage between the members… Keen to hear more. Stine Janvin / Morten Joh – Leaving home – O Verden, Hav Da Gode Nat! (feat. Lucy Railton) [Futura Resistenza/Bandcamp] Stine Janvin / Morten Joh – Before the burial site – Jeg Raader Eder Alle [Futura Resistenza/Bandcamp] Returning now to Norway, we finish with beautiful strangeness from Norwegians Stine Janvin and Morten Joh, adapting funeral procession music (“Liksongen” = corpse songs) from Ryfylke, Norway. Janvin’s voice forms the basis of these works, but the ceremonial music is rendered alien through extensive electronic processing and additional electronics, and occasional vibraphone from Joh. Two guests, both with innovative approaches to their instruments, contribute further: Berlin-based Australian guitarist Jules Reidy and British cellist Lucy Railton. But one of the most magical moments must be when Janvin’s voice is shadowed by its electronic twin in warbling harmony. On the second last track, the alien elements mostly give way to the acoustic sounds of voice and vibraphone, although the album concludes with stentorian synths playing J.S. Bach. In the "Kaddish De'Rabbanan" – known as "Kaddish Al Yisrael" – a special prayer is offered on behalf of the Torah scholars and their students. We pray for the wellbeing of the Rabbis, and for "Talmidihon Ve'al Talmideh Talmidehon" – "their students, and their students' students" – that is, for three generations of scholars. This parallels the verse in the Book of Yeshayahu (59:21) in which Hashem promises that the words of the Torah will not depart "from your mouth, from the mouth of your offspring, or from the mouth of your offspring's offspring." The Gemara derives from this verse that if three generations in a family study Torah, then Torah is guaranteed to remain in that family for all generations in the future. Correspondingly, we pray for the scholars, their students, and their students' students. We speak in this prayer of scholars "De'askin Be'Orayta Kadishta" – "who engage in the sacred Torah." Since the word "Orayta" (Torah) is a feminine noun, the adjective must likewise be in the feminine form – "Kadishta" – and not in the masculine form – "Kadisha." One must therefore ensure to recite "Kadishta," with the letter Tav. We emphasize that we pray for these blessings on behalf of scholars in this land and "Be'chol Atar Ve'atar" – in any place, no matter where they are. Some communities have the custom of reciting this phrase as "De'yatbin Ve'askin Be'Orayta Kadishta" – adding the word "De'yatbin" ("who sit…"). Although this is the practice among Moroccan and Tunisian communities, this is not the custom among Syrian Jews. Different versions exist for the phrase "Yeheh Lana U'lechon U'lehon" ("There shall be for us and for you and for them…"), as in some editions, the words "Lehon" and "Lechon" are reversed: "Yeheh Lana U'lehon U'lechon." Hacham Ovadia Yosef maintained that the correct text is "Yeheh Lana U'lechon U'lehon," as it is proper to first extend a blessing "to you" – to those who are present, and only then to others. We pray that Hashem should grant the scholars "Hina Ve'hisda Ve'rahameh" – "grace, kindness and compassion." The word "Hina" is Aramaic for the Hebrew word "Hen" ("grace"), which is sometimes translated as "charm." It denotes an intangible quality that some people have which leads others to like them and wish to deal kindly with them. In order to succeed in life, we need a degree of "Hen," a certain likeability that earns us people's favor and goodwill, and so we bless the scholars that they should not only receive Hashem's kindness and compassion, but also be granted "Hen." Some commentators explain that these three wishes – "Hina, Ve'hisda, Ve'rahameh" – correspond to Abraham, Yishak and Yaakob.

One who recites Kaddish must ensure while saying the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera" to pronounce "Di Bera" as two separate words. If one recites this phrase too quickly, he will end up saying, "Dibera," as one word, which is incorrect. He must be careful to recite two separate words – "Di" and "Bera." Different opinions exist regarding the pronunciation of the word "Chi'r'uteh" in the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera Chi'r'uteh," as according to some views, the letter Chaf has a Dagesh (dot), such that it should be pronounced "Ki'r'uteh." The debate hinges on how to read this phrase. The basic rule is that when any of the letters Bet, Gimmel, Dalet, Kaf, Peh or Tav appears at the beginning of the word, it receives a Dagesh. The exception to this rule is when the preceding word ends with an Alef, Heh, Vav or Yod, in which case the word does not receive a Dagesh. In the case of "Chi'r'uteh," then, it would seem that since the previous word ("Bera") ends with the letter Alef, the Chaf at the beginning of "Chi'r'uteh" should remain without a Dagesh, and thus be pronounced "Chi'r'uteh." Indeed, this is how the word is punctuated in many editions of the Siddur. However, Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that the more correct pronunciation is "Ki'r'uteh." He explained that although the previous word ends with an Alef, that word – "Bera" – is not connected to the word "Ki'r'uteh." The word "Ki'r'uteh" means "in accordance with His will," and Hacham Ovadia explained, based on a passage in Masechet Sofrim, that this word modifies not the immediately preceding words, but rather the beginning of Kaddish, when we pray for G-d's Name to be glorified. We pray that His Name should be sanctified and praised "Ki'r'uteh" – in fulfillment of His will. Hence, the word "Ki'r'uteh" stands separate and apart from the words "Di Bera," and so the Heh at the end of the word "Bera" does not affect the letter Chaf at the beginning of the word "Ki'r'uteh." We thus apply the standard rule that a Chaf at the beginning of a word receives a Dagesh, such that the word should be pronounced "Ki'r'uteh." Rav Meir Mazuz (1945-2025) disputed Hacham Ovadia's position. He noted that the Abudarham (Spain, 14 th century) interpreted "Di Bera Chi'r'uteh" to mean, "that He created in accordance with His will." According to this reading, the word "Chi'r'uteh" indeed modifies the immediately preceding words – "Di Bera," such that the letter Chaf should not receive a Dagesh. Rav Mazuz conceded, however, that the passage in Masechet Sofrim indeed implies that "Chi'r'uteh" modifies the earlier part of the sentence, and not the words "Di Bera." In practice, different customs exist. Tunisian communities pronounce the word "Ki'r'uteh," whereas the custom among the communities in Aleppo, Syria was to pronounce it "Chi'r'uteh." Rav Yisrael Bitan writes that Hacham Ovadia, despite preferring the pronunciation of "Ki'r'uteh," acknowledged that those who pronounce it "Chi'r'uteh" have a legitimate basis for this practice. Therefore, each community should follow its custom. Summary: One who recites Kaddish must ensure while saying the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera" to pronounce "Di Bera" as two separate words, and not as one word ("Dibera"). Different customs exist regarding the next word – "Chi'r'uteh," as some pronounce the word this way, and others pronounce it "Ki'r'uteh." Each community should follow its custom.

Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania mixes the real-life audio of a 5-year-old Palestinian trapped in a car in Gaza with actors playing the emergency operators on the other end of the line. We don't agree on this film, either, but it has moved many audiences deeply. Available for online rental. THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR. Nominated for best documentary feature, this Netflix film is composed entirely of deputies' body cam footage of a neighborhood where a deadly shooting ripped the multicultural community apart. We think this is the front-runner for the Academy Award, if only because it's probably the one most people saw (plus, it's great). Streaming now. MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN. Russian school teacher Pavel Talankin bravely documents Putin's propagandist efforts to indoctrinate young minds at the start of the Ukraine invasion. You come to really care about him and the kids in his care, particularly the teens who are facing an uncertain future. This is also up for the best documentary feature Oscar. The Bet Yosef cites the Shiboleh Ha'leket (Rav Sidkiya Ha'rofeh, Italy, 13 th century) as establishing that one should hear at least seven Kaddish recitations each day. This is inferred from the verse in Tehillim (119:164), "Sheba Ba'yom Hilalticha" – "I have praised You seven times each day." By contrast, the Arizal maintained that one should hear at least twelve daily Kaddish recitations. Our customary prayer service is arranged in such a way that a total of thirteen Kaddishim are recited. In the morning, "Kaddish Al Yisrael" is recited before Hodu, "Hasi Kaddish" is recited after Yishtabah, another "Hasi Kaddish" is recited after the Hazzan's repetition of the Amida, "Kaddish Titkabal" is recited after "U'ba Le'sion," another Kaddish is recited after the daily Shir Shel Yom, and then "Kaddish Al Yisrael" is recited before Alenu, for a total of six Kaddishim. At Minha, another three Kaddishim are recited – the "Hasi Kaddish" before the Amida, the "Kaddish Titkabal" following the repetition of the Amida, and another Kaddish after La'menase'ah Bi'nginot, before Alenu. An additional four Kaddishim are recited at Arbit, bringing the total to thirteen: before Barechu, before the Amida, after the Amida, and before Alenu. These thirteen Kaddishim correspond to the thirteen attributes of divine mercy. In some communities, Kaddish is not recited after La'menase'ah Bi'nginot at Minha, such that they recite a total of twelve Kaddishim, following the teaching of the Arizal. In Ashkenazic communities, Kaddish is recited also after Alenu. This custom is followed in some Moroccan and Tunisian communities, as well. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) cites the Arizal as explaining how the various Kaddish recitations serve to facilitate our transition between the different spiritual realms. We cannot proceed immediately from our current realm – the realm of Asiya – to the highest realm, the realm of Asilut, where we stand before G-d and pray the Amida. We need to ascend incrementally, and it is through the Kaddish recitation that we advance from one realm to the next. The first "jump" occurs with the "Kaddish Al Yisrael" before Hodu, which elevates us to the realm of Yesira. The Kaddish after Yishtabah then lifts us to the realm of Beri'a. As no interruption is permitted during the section of "Yoser Or" until after the Amida, we ascend to the highest realm, Asilut, for the Amida prayer without a Kaddish. We then "descend" back to the realm of Beri'a with the "Hasi Kaddish" recited after the Amida, and then to Yesira with the Kaddish after U'ba Le'sion. Finally, the Kaddish following the Shir Shel Yom brings us back down to the realm of Asiya.
Episode 223: Ottoman Continuities and the Development of Modern Education in Tunisia This project traces the changing role of Ottomanism in relation to the emergence of modern educational institutions in Tunis. The development of the Tunisian education system demonstrated continuous Ottoman links, despite colonial co-optation over time. The social milieus formed in modern educational spaces facilitated ties to the Ottoman Empire. In short, this is a regional history rooted in a single city, which challenges colonial and nationalist historiographies. Over time, modern education led to a democratization in forms of belonging to the Ottoman Empire. It was no longer only court elites who had access to other statesmen, but rather those educated in the new schools who negotiated changing notions of being Ottoman in Tunis. The first school aimed at modernizing education was founded in 1840: the Bardo Military Academy. This school created a modernized army, including a modernized Mamluk class, whose members would shape education reform later as well. Those educated there formed an inner circle of reformists around Khayreddine Pasha (though he himself was not a Bardo graduate). Here, Mamluks, as well as local Arabs, were educated in a way that emphasized bodily discipline, modern sciences, and European languages. This school was modeled on European military schools, but retained a distinctively Ottoman shape, just like its parallel institution in Istanbul. It was a product of the reforms of Ahmed Bey and, further, was clearly influenced by ideas from modernizing reforms like the Nizam-i Cedid and the Tanzimat. By 1875, the new Mamluk class played a key role in founding the Sadiki School. This institution, though later co-opted by French colonial interests, represented a distinctly Tunisian-Ottoman mode of modern education from the outset. The short-lived Ottoman language program at Sadiki represented an early democratization of the language outside of the Beylical Palace. More importantly, as a result of Sadikian education, French became a language of cross border communication between Arabs and Turks as well. When the first generation of Sadikians grew up, they became the nucleus of the Young Tunisian Party, modelled on the Young Turk Party. Beyond the walls of official schools, Sadikians generated a great deal of educational opportunities through two main institutions: first, the Khaldounia, an institution that aimed to teach modern subjects to Zaytounians.; and second, the Sadiki Alumni Association, which hosted many lectures and extracurricular activities outside of the tight control of the French colonial cultural project. In these spaces, Pan-Islamist ideas flourished. Even as ethnic difference between Turks and Arabs became a cornerstone of colonial propaganda in the 1910s, many of those educated in these spaces maintained the notion that Turks and Arabs were brothers sharing a common cause. Education was further a gendered issue, and one that became tied to moral questions articulated in an Ottoman-Islamic idiom. The first Franco-Arabic school for girls, located on Rue du Pacha, was founded in 1900. It featured a curriculum modelled largely on the Sadiki School, though moderated to produce mothers rather than civil servants. Though run by the wife of a French colonial official, this school and schools like it which followed were far from purely colonial institutions. In conferences and in the press, Tunisians emphasized the importance of educating girls, arguing that it was a religious matter. The education of girls became a matter of preserving an Umma that was rapidly changing shape as the Ottoman Empire came to an end over the early decades of the twentieth century. Between 1840 and 1923, various educational institutions played key roles in renegotiating what Ottoman belonging meant in Tunis. Despite French colonial rule extending through most of this timeline, many Tunisians maintained a sense of being part of the Ottoman Empire. Initially the domain of statesmen, being Ottoman gradually became a more accessible identity to broader swaths of Tunisians because of changes to the education system. Erin Kelleher is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Focusing on social and cultural history, her work looks at on the relationship between Ottomanism and education reform in Tunisia from the mid-nineteenth century into the early twentieth century. She spent the 2024-2025 academic year as an AIMS fellow based in Tunis, Tunisia. Previously, she spent a year in Meknes, Morocco as a CASA fellow and spent several summers studying Modern and Ottoman Turkish in Istanbul. She holds an MA in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization from the University of Washington. Episode 222: Tunisian Peinture Sous Verre – A History in Reverse This lecture provides an introduction to reverse glass painting in Tunisia, a predominantly figurative form of Islamic art that is often referred to as a “popular” tradition. As very little archival material and original documentation exists, most of what we know about this painting practice comes from collections, scholarship, and stories told about it from the 1960s and on, over one hundred years after it had already been well established in Tunisia. To highlight this belated epistemology, the presentation follows a reverse chronology of the medium. After briefly introducing the technique and artistic process, it starts from the contemporary moment and moves backwards in time to the post-independence era, the Protectorate period, and earlier. It ends with some speculations about the connections between Tunisian under-glass painting and other historical or regional visual-material practices. Ava Katarina Tabatabai Hess is a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Her dissertation focuses on vernacular Islamic art from Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, examining the proliferation of reverse glass painting and chromolithography in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as well as their post-independence recuperations. She conducted fieldwork in Tunisia in 2022 with support from an AIMS grant, and from October 2023 to April 2025 as a FLAS research fellow and a Fulbright-Hays fellow, with additional research undertaken in Algeria, Morocco, and France. She earned her BA from Columbia University in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies, and a master's in Visual, Material, and Museum Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Ava is also a curator, a contributing researcher with the Arabic Design Archive, and currently serves as Arts Editor of Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies. Mr. Freeman was the lead author of “Shared Space Under Pressure: Business Support for Civic Freedoms and Human Rights Defenders.”[Ralph,] you correctly characterize the silence and obeisance of much of corporate America (not least the tech CEOs) so far this year. I would use another pair of words as well to characterize their stance, which I think during the campaign last year in 2024 was: complacency, [and] I think the complacency now has become complicity in a dramatic, historic, democratic backsliding in the United States with the erosion of rule of law and our constitutional democracy.Bennett FreemanAt the end of the day, I'm much more interested in democratic governance based on rule of law and fair elections than I am in what corporate America has to say. But they have a stake now. And I think that those of us who have tried to promote corporate responsibility (and in Ralph's case and many others, to impose corporate accountability) have to continue this work. And we've got to engage corporate America without illusions, but with still aspirations to try to get them back to support—in a nonpartisan or bipartisan way—the fundamentals of what our country is supposed to be about.Bennett FreemanNews 10/10/25* Two polls came out this past week which reveal key data points about Americans' views on Israel. First, a Washington Post poll of American Jews, published October 6th and covering September 2-9th, shows that 61% say Israel has committed “war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza.” This nearly two-thirds majority should put the lie to the canard that American Jews monolithically support Israel's actions in Gaza. They don't. Furthermore, 39% say Israel has committed “Genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.” Some contend these numbers might be higher if the question was worded slightly differently, for example asking in the present tense whether Israel is committing genocide, rather than in the past tense. Regardless, while this result is slightly less than a majority, it certainly proves that a substantial share of American Jews do believe that Isreal is guilty of the crime of genocide. Astute politicians should take note.* Another survey that shrewd pols should consider is the Institute for Middle East Understanding Policy Project (IMEU) poll released October 3rd. In this poll, 43% of respondents identified “U.S. foreign policy and relations with Israel” as an issue that will play a role in their 2026 Democratic primary vote. As for more ambitious Democrats, 71% said they would be more likely to vote for “A candidate for president who voted to withhold weapons to Israel,” compared to just 10% who said the same about “A candidate who voted against withholding weapons to Israel.” The numbers are cut and dried.* Last week, CBS confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu “directly approved military operations on two vessels,” in the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying aid to Gaza. According to this report, Netanyahu ordered Israeli forces to “[launch] drones from a submarine and [drop] incendiary devices onto the boats that were moored outside the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said.” As this report notes, “Under international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict, the use of incendiary weapons against a civilian population or civilian objects is prohibited in all circumstances.” Put simply, this attack amounted to a war crime. In a statement, the Global Sumud Flotilla wrote “Confirmation of Israeli involvement…simply lay[s] bare a pattern of arrogance and impunity so grotesque that it cannot escape eventual reckoning.” The flotilla was intercepted off the coast of Gaza last week and over 400 activists were detained in Israeli custody. Many have alleged mistreatment, with Turkish activist Ersin Çelik claiming guards “dragged [Greta Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag.”* Unfortunately, this is the last news critical of Israel we can expect to see from CBS for a long time. On October 6th, CNN reported that Paramount will officially acquire The Free Press for $150 million and appoint its founder, Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief of CBS News. This position was created specifically for Weiss. According to Paramount, in this role, Weiss will “shape editorial priorities, champion core values across platforms, and lead innovation in how the organization reports and delivers the news.” In an interview with Democracy Now!, journalist David Klion of the Nation and Jewish Currents, said Weiss, “has presented herself as a champion of free speech…But in reality, she has a 20-year history of suppressing speech that she finds objectionable, especially when it's speech championing the rights of Palestinians and criticizing the state of Israel.”* Meanwhile in Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum called for the immediate repatriation of the six Mexican nationals among the Gaza aid flotilla participants following their detention by Israeli forces, per Mexico News Daily. Following a speech by the Mexican president, the foreign ministry wrote that Mexican Embassy officials had gone to Ashdod, where the activists were being held, to “directly verify the conditions on the ground, request consular access, and ensure that … [the] safety and integrity [of the Mexicans] is respected, in accordance with applicable international law.” Notably, President Trump has made no such moves to publicly demand the return of, or even lawful treatment of, the Americans on board these vessels. Perhaps this is a contributing factor to Sheinbaum's stunning 78% approval in a recent El País poll, which shows her not just overwhelmingly popular among her own party's base but even among those registered to competing parties. According to this poll, 73% of PAN members, 72% of PRI members, 70% of MC members, and 59% of voters with no party preference approve of her performance in office. These numbers are frankly unimaginable in America, but so are the achievements Sheinbaum has delivered in her short time in power.* Turning to Congress, Representatives Mark Pocan, Pramila Jayapal and Jared Huffman have authored a letter expressing “grave concerns,” regarding President Trump's executive order designating “Antifa” as a Domestic Terrorist Organization, calling for the order and accompanying memorandum, known as NSPM-7 to be “immediately rescinded,” according to the related press release. In the letter, the members warn “the sweeping language and broad authority in these directives pose serious constitutional, statutory, and civil liberties risks, especially if used to target political dissent, protest, or ideological speech.” The members also note that the memo “characterizes ‘anti-capitalism' as a hallmark of violent behavior without explaining the term…[allowing] officials to potentially treat Americans as domestic terrorists for something as routine as organizing a local boycott or operating an employee-owned business.” Perhaps most critically, they write “These actions are illegal, and…We stand ready to take legislative action should you fail,” to rescind the order.* In St. Louis, former Congresswoman Cori Bush is running to take back her seat. Bush, who came to prominence as an activist during the 2014 Ferguson protests and eventually primaried 10-term incumbent Congressman Lacy Clay, was ousted in a close 2024 primary by prosecutor Wesley Bell. According to POLITICO, Bell received $8 million dollars from AIPAC during that campaign; the pro-Israel PAC had identified Bush, along with former Congressman Jamaal Bowman, as key targets because of their pro-Palestine positions.* Of course, for the time being, Congressional deadlock is keeping the federal government in a shutdown. One symptom of this shutdown surfaced in Los Angeles this week, when dozens of flights into and out of Hollywood Burbank Airport were delayed or canceled because its air traffic control tower was temporarily unstaffed, the LA Times reports. Staffing shortages also caused delays at Newark Liberty International Airport, Denver International Airport and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. This report added that the Federal Aviation Administration “warned of more disruption at airports due to staff shortages as a result of the government shutdown.” Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said in a joint press conference with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, “We need to bring this shutdown to a close, so that the [FAA] and the committed aviation safety professionals can put this distraction behind us and completely focus on their vital work…We do not have the luxury of time.”* More troubling signs are emerging in the economy as well. For months now, analysts have warned that the U.S. is not just on the brink of a recession, but rather already in one – it is just being masked by the massive speculative bubble of AI. Back in August, Axios reported that “excitement over artificial intelligence…is clouding recessionary signals in more cyclical corners of the market,” citing longer lengths of unemployment and slower hiring. Now, the AI bubble is reaching epic proportions. According to the Financial Times, “AI spending by companies now accounts for a 40 per cent share of US GDP growth this year,” while the Financial Post reports AI companies have accounted for 80 per cent of the gains in U.S. stocks so far in 2025. Given the market's reliance on AI speculation, the economic damage if that bubble bursts whilst the economy is on such unstable footing could be catastrophic.* Finally, for some good news, a new California law is aiming to regulate the noise level of advertisements on streaming services. The Guardian reports the new legislation, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, “forces the powerful streaming platforms to comply with existing regulations that have barred television broadcasters from bombarding the eardrums of viewers with overly loud commercials since 2010.” According to this story, the bill was sponsored by State Senator Tom Umberg, whose newborn child was consistently awoken by overloud ads. As the Guardian notes, “Since so many of the streaming platforms are based in California, the new state bill could set a national standard and lower volumes across the country.” Rest assured industry will strike back at this law somehow, but it remains to be seen how they will argue for their right to blast ads at consumers at outrageous volumes.This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. We hear more about the PCPA and how Israel links Hamas to it. A senior Hamas official told the BBC this morning that the terror group will likely reject US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza, telling the British network that it “serves Israel’s interests” and “ignores those of the Palestinian people.” Horovitz delves into the Hamas terror group's points of opposition. We hear how Qatar, Egypt and Turkey have urged Hamas to give a positive response to US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal. Horovitz speculates on whose best interests these countries are representing, even as they have signed on to helping rebuild and fill the security vacuum in Gaza as Israel pulls out in the day after the war. A drone appears to have struck a boat from the Global Sumud Flotilla while it was docked at a Tunisian port on its way to bring aid into Gaza, temporarily starting a fire. Nobody on board was harmed. The boat was reportedly crewed by the same activists who had attempted to sail to Gaza on the Madleen this past July, including Greta Thunberg. And it is here worth noting that Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir recently said that Global Sumud Flotilla activists must be designated as terrorists and treated accordingly, in order to "create a clear deterrent" against foreign parties attempting to bring aid into Gaza by sea. All too often, punitive laws, state violence, economic exclusion and social hostility are stacked against a community that is isolated and excluded. That's certainly true in Tunisia and other North African countries.
