Joey Remenyi from Seeking Balance International talks about how we are swimming in unseen data, that our bodies need to physically digest, daily. How do we digest our lived experience and make sense of the world? How do we firm up our identity and know who we are or who we are not? Why does it matter? Undigested life experience can accumulate in our bodies leading to tension patterns that feel not-quite-right and feed symptom loops. Learning to empty ourselves of other people's stories, ideas, judgments, and narratives can be a really important part of returning to wholeness, locating our centre and recovering from chronic illness. The Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast

Optimal digestion is crucial for overall health and well-being. It ensures that the body efficiently breaks down food into nutrients, which are then absorbed and utilized for energy, growth, and cellular repair. Proper digestion supports a strong immune system, maintains a healthy gut microbiome, and helps prevent gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, it plays a significant role in mental health, as the gut is often referred to as the "second brain" due to its impact on mood and cognitive function. Therefore, maintaining optimal digestion is vital for sustaining physical and mental health, enhancing quality of life, and preventing chronic diseases. In this episode of The Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, continues along the journey of digestion, explaining that if someone is not properly digesting their food, they will not be able to absorb and assimilate the nutrients from the foods they are eating, regardless of how healthful those foods are. Jamie brings back another historical audio clip from a lecture initially given by the founder of The Nutritional Therapy Association, Gray Graham. In Episode 10, Gray discussed the optimal function of digestion. This time, he walks you through “Digestive Hell” – the myriad of diseases, conditions, and other unpleasantries that arise from a suboptimal digestive system. The health of the organism is dependent upon the health of the organ systems, which are dependent upon the health of the organs, which is dependent upon the health of the tissues, which is dependent upon the health of the cells, which is dependent upon digestion. Thus, all wellness begins with digestion. Therefore, does all disease stem from digestive dysfunction? Not exactly, but you can eat the healthiest diet possible for your bio-individual needs, and if you're not breaking it down to the necessary molecules your body can utilize, what's the point? Every single cell in all tissues, organs, and systems of an organism relies on the ability to properly absorb nutrients from food. Factors such as stress, poor eating habits, gallbladder removal, and reduced levels of stomach acid (HCl) can hinder digestion. Given the critical role of nutrition in maintaining healthy cells, any disruption in digestion can be harmful in various ways. When the digestive system is compromised, it can lead to a domino effect, impacting the functioning of other bodily systems, 02:35 – Recap of optimal digestion 04:07 – Start of digestive dysfunction 05:23 – “Where's ‘Digestive Hell'?” 06:56 – Distraction, stress, sympathetic state 13:22 – Pancreatic amylase 13:30 – Dysbiosis, yeast, pathogens (Also at 19:50) 13:55 – It's all about acid/pH levels 15:17 – Macronutrient degradation 15:47 – Inputs for the production of HCl  16:20 – Things that cause hypochlorhydria (stress, too much protein, zinc, other nutrient deficiencies, allergies…) 17:13 – Dr. Jonathan Wright, the use of the Heidelberg Test for diagnosis of hypochlorhydria, pH for proper hormone function and enzymatic action 21:37 – Pasteur vs. Bechamp / Microorganisms vs. Terraine (Which is to blame?) 23:34 – Hpylori 26:53 – Heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, ulcers 37:50 – Homework/experiment 39:40 – Chyme into the duodenum, secretin, pancreas, bicarbonate, incomplete digestion, whole food particles in the small intestine 42:11 – Gallbladder, bile, fats, cholecystokinin, liver, fat-free or low-fat diet as the cause of gallstones and gallbladder dysfunction, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) 52:06 – Burping up fish oil and delayed release fish oil 55:04 – Undigested proteins, microvilli, leaky gut/gut permeability, immune dysfunction 56:03 – Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, healing her autistic child, GAPS Diet 58:04 – Large intestine/colon, ileocecal valve, dysbiosis, inflammation diverticulitis, irritable bowel, Crohn's disease, celiac disease/gluten reactivity, hormones/endocrine system, enzymes, heart health, allergies, butyric acid and foul-smelling feces   Please SUBSCRIBE and Click Here to record a message for Jamie, ask a question, suggest an interviewee, or record an intro for the show!

[04:07] Different Types of Eczema and How They Differ from Each Other -       Eczema or atopic dermatitis is just rashy skin and often has a component of overgrowth of staph aureus on the skin. -       There are three types of priorities of eczema and how they appear. -       Gut-mediated eczema is usually going to look bright red. If it's circular, it is probably always gut mediated. And it's going to look worse in the summer. -       Antihistamines and histamines aren't enemies but are almost always a problem in most eczema cases. -       Histamine should be broken down better when you have good gut bacteria. [10:06] Are You Digesting Properly? Things You Should Know About Digesting -       No one is digesting because we suppress all our digestive enzymes, stomach acid, and pancreatic enzyme functions under stress. -        Undigested stuff creates chaos in the immune system. And then it informs the immune system that there's a problem, which can lead you to have food sensitivities. -       If you do not have a banana bowel movement every morning, you're probably not digesting beautifully. [28:11] Improving Gut Microbiome: Tools That Can Help To Strengthen Your Gut -       Prebiotics are supposed to feed good bacteria. But most clinicians at practice would tell you they are good and bad, depending on the prebiotics. -       Saccharomyces boulardii can pass the stomach acid spores and typically can have some bacteria-shifting properties. Still, they're probably not enough when you have H. Pylori or other certain bacteria that need a certain potential treatment. -       Short-chain fatty acids are up-regulating ketosis. -       If you're trying to support your gut health, improve your digestion first. -       Doing diaphragmatic breathing pumps your lymphatics, which improves your digestion. -       When doing deep breathing, you increase ATP turnover by 15 times. So, you're healing your adrenals with breathwork. [39:24] Liver and Kidney: Detoxifying Tips to Help Your Organs Clean Your Body -       Try always to start externally. -       Be careful what you put on large areas of your skin, such as pure, high-quality oil. -       The sauna massively helps with cellular turnover and increases like passive exercise. -       Liver detoxification involves pooping, being hydrated, and sweating. -       Digesting your food is massively important to get those nutrients, and amino acids come from proteins. [4736] The Main Causes of Kidney Issues and Ways To Protect It -       Keep hydrated. -       Kidneys usually function, and you're hydrating well and supporting them that way. -       High blood pressure, high glucose levels, and certain medications are some of the causes of kidney issues. -       Cordyceps mushrooms are beneficial to the kidneys. In this episode of How Humans Heal, I share about 6 recent cases from my practice and how they relate to leaky gut, even though it wasn't obvious that they had leaky gut!    Case 1 Woman with autoimmunity and joint pain who was under extreme stress now knows which foods to avoid, and which to choose, as well as the supplements to heal leaky gut, recover from stress, and prevent autoimmunity from flaring. She's feeling better and onto phase 3 of my protocol, so today I helped her with maintenance tips.     Case 2 Woman who worked with a different practitioner to treat SIBO and C Diff, and then developed urticaria (hives). She called me to figure out what to do besides take Zyrtec every day. I identified that leaky gut was never addressed and likely there are still overgrowing bacteria that are triggering the hives.      Case 3 Woman who came in complaining of a burning rash behind her ears and inside her mouth. The key question is “what are you eating differently?” It turns out she's been eating cherry tomatoes all summer and is having an inflammatory reaction. Any inflammatory issue ends up causing leaky gut – it's time to heal it again.    Case 4 A woman with a history of autoimmunity, which is associated with leaky gut, but hasn't been told that she has leaky gut. Her main symptom now is bloating, which is caused by overgrowing gut bacteria. We are running the tests I recommend so I have the information I need to help her be most efficient with feeling better. Her results just came in and indicate severe leaky gut.     Case 5 Man who saw a gastroenterologist for an endoscopy and colonoscopy, but they can't see leaky gut that way. And he was prescribed an antacid, which ends up decreasing digestion of food, even healthy food. Undigested food overfeeds bacteria, leading to bloating and leaky gut. And he was intermittent fasting too long, which stresses our system more.     Case 6 A woman who had Grave's disease, another autoimmune condition, is celebrating 12 weeks of pregnancy. That means I helped her to turn off autoimmunity and prevent a miscarriage – hooray!     I find it SO interesting to observe how leaky gut presents different ways for each person.     I want you to know that you are not alone, and that even if you have symptoms that other practitioners have not been able to solve, I'm here to help you solve it.    If you have been trying to figure out how to heal your body and leaky gut, join me in the Leaky Gut Program. https://drdoni.lpages.co/leaky-gut-program/    Don't recreate the wheel so to speak! Welcome to The Nutritional Pearls Podcast! Focusing on topics that include digestion, adrenal fatigue, leaky gut, supplementation, electrolytes, stomach acid, and so much more, “The Nutritional Pearls Podcast” features Christine Moore, NTP and is hosted by Jimmy Moore, host of the longest running nutritional podcast on the Internet.  Sharing nuggets of wisdom from Christine's training as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Jimmy's years of podcasting and authoring international bestselling health and nutrition books, they will feature a new topic of interest and fascination in the world of nutritional health each Monday. Listen in today as Christine and Jimmy talk all about carbohydrates in Episode 9.   Here's what Christine and Jimmy talked about in Episode 10: – 1. Review of Digestion –– A. Digestion happens north to south –– B. Proper stomach pH is supposed to be between 1.5 and 3 –– C. Zinc and B6 are needed to produce stomach acid – 2. Dysfunction in digestive process –– A. Dysfunction in the brain: Sympathetic State—doing other activities or being stressed while eating –– B. Dysfunction in the mouth: Not chewing food thoroughly (for about 30 seconds); signal not received from the brain to have the mouth release salivary amylase. –– C. Dysfunction in the stomach: Not having enough stomach acid. 90% of Americans don't produce enough stomach acid (Jonathon Wright, MD came up with this using the Heidelberg Gastrotelemetry equipment to check the stomach pH on thousands of patients AND Dr. George Goodhart, a chiropractor, came to the same conclusion using kinesiological and functional assessment). ––– 1. Food, especially protein doesn't get broken down ––– 2. Allows foreign invaders to pass through to the rest of the digesting system. Helicobacter (H) Pylori (stomach ulcers caused by bacteria) happens because of inadequate stomach acid ––– 3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) actually happens because of too little stomach acid. Poorly digested foods cause a back-up in the esophagus oftentimes because the cardiac sphincter is weak. Since the acid content is higher in the stomach, the back flow burns the esophagus. ––– 4. If stomach pH is not right, the pyloric sphincter won't release the stomach contents into the duodenum Remember: Carbs ferment, proteins putrefy and fats rancidify –– D. Dysfunction in the Pancreas: If pH of chime (digested food) is not correct, Secretin won't be released to trigger the pancreatic juices needed to further break down food. –– E. Dysfunction in the Gallbladder: If pH of chime is not correct, then CCK won't be released to trigger bile to digest the fats we eat. –– F. Dysfunction in the small intestine: Undigested foods will cause gut flora to become imbalanced and it will also cause irritation to the intestinal lining causing increased permeability leading to Leaky Gut and therefore, autoimmune conditions. –– G. Dysfunction in the large intestine: Undigested food can clog the ileocecal valve (valve leading from the small intestine to the large intestine) Undigested food can cause inflammation leading to colitis, irritable bowl syndrome, Crohn's Disease, Celiac Disease Nutritional Pearls For Episode 10: 1. Being in a parasympathetic state when eating is very important . 2. Proper stomach acid is imperative. Gluten Free RN

Celiac disease is grossly underdiagnosed in the United States in large part because the medical community is operating on outdated information about the condition. And despite the recommendations of the National Institute of Health back in 2004, we have yet to implement a mass screening for celiac disease, and health care providers remain alarmingly uninformed. The Gluten Free RN is taking steps to remedy the situation by sharing the basics for medical professionals. Today she covers the WHO’s definition of celiac disease, how our understanding of the condition has change over time, and some common misconceptions about celiac disease. She also explains the top symptoms, recommended testing for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, and the neurological nature of the disorder. Listen in to learn what health care providers need to know about this undiagnosed epidemic, the complex web of health issues that may result from undiagnosed celiac disease, and why it is important to have a high index of suspicion and include celiac testing on every differential diagnosis. Help your patients go gluten-free and collect something other than autoimmune disorders!  What’s Discussed:  The standard of care in the US Providers should have diagnosed at least 1% of patients with celiac disease Undiagnosed for 70 years, must overcome to prevent further pain and suffering The goals of Nadine’s consulting business Works with facilities to protect celiac patients Ensure compliance with ADA How the media portrays the gluten-free lifestyle Dissuades people from adopting diet (program sponsors influence messaging) Negative headlines How our understanding of celiac disease has changed over time The recommendations of the 2004 NIH consensus meeting regarding celiac disease Mass screening (meets WHO criteria) Education for health care providers The World Health Organization criteria for mass screening Early clinical detection essential Condition is common Screening tests highly sensitive and specific Effective treatment available Untreated condition leads to complications The autoimmune disorders associated with undiagnosed celiac disease MS Type 1 diabetes Lupus Rheumatoid arthritis Sjögren’s Vitiligo The WHO definition of celiac disease Characterized by hypersensitivity to gluten Prevalence currently estimated at 1:1,000 worldwide Screening trials suggest prevalence of 1:100 Results in weight loss, diarrhea, nutritional deficiencies Caused by villous atrophy May present as extraintestinal manifestations or remain clinically silent Why celiac disease can’t be ruled out with a single test Can be triggered at any point HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes indicate genetic predisposition Misconceptions about celiac disease in the US medical community Thought to be digestive disorder, but really neurological Can present with seizures, numbness, constipation, balance issues, celiac cerebellar ataxia How skin issues are a reflection of what is going on internally Epithelial skin is same tissue as inside How damage to the small intestine leads to multiple health issues Increased permeability of intestinal wall Leaky blood brain barrier Leaky blood vessels Leaky lungs and skin The classic symptoms of celiac disease Chronic diarrhea Malabsorption Extreme weight loss Malnutrition What celiac disease looks like in children Diarrhea, constipation General abdominal pain Failure to thrive Falling off growth chart Short stature Learning disabilities ADD, ADHD, ODD Autism Skin issues (eczema, cirrhosis, acne) Delayed puberty Dental problems Anorexia, obesity Bed wetting The prevalence of celiac disease in older adults 30% of people diagnosed with celiac disease are over 60 Potential signs of celiac disease in the aging population Dementia Alzheimer’s Vision, hearing loss Urinary problems Cancer diagnosis (especially bowel cancer) Ataxia Arthritis Hair loss Fatigue Osteoporosis Anemia The elements that get into your blood stream as a result of villous atrophy Toxins Heavy metals Undigested food particles Yeast, fungus Parasites, other harmful bacteria Top symptoms of celiac disease Chronic anemia Fatigue Muscle, joint pain Depression, irritability Thyroid disorders Infertility issues GI problems (from mouth to rectum) Migraine headaches Psychiatric disorders Seizures Dermatitis herpetiformis Down, Turner or Williams syndrome Cardiomyopathy The effects of gluten on the brain Anger Depression, anxiety Learning disabilities Lethargy Insomnia Brain fog Schizophrenia Dyslexia Populations affected by celiac disease Any age, race, gender 3 million people all over the world Study of healthy blood donors in Mexico found unexpectedly high prevalence of tTGA positivity Now recognized as common disease among Middle Eastern and North African populations 1:7 Americans suffer from non-celiac gluten sensitivity (43 million people) The findings of an economic study by Columbia University Non-diarrheal presentations now most frequent Celiac disease grossly underdiagnosed in US Average delay in diagnosis is 4-11 years for adults in North America Significant improvement in quality of life when patients diagnosed and treated appropriately The importance of ensuring that medications are gluten-free Nadine’s recommendations around nutrition for celiac patients Gluten- and dairy-free Ideally Paleo Super-good high fat Things to consider re: the results of a celiac panel A positive test guarantees intestinal damage Include total IgA and IgG 70% produce a false negative Additional tests that offer valuable information Fecal fat score (ask for #, over 300 indicates malabsorption) Complete blood count Comprehensive metabolic panel Vitamin D3 level (below 40 ng/ml is critically low) Vitamins A, E & K levels Vitamin B6 & B12 levels MTHFR gene test Magnesium RBC test Zinc level Iodine level B9/Folate level Ferritin level Iron level Thyroid panel Bone density test Lipid panel ANA test (autoimmune issues) ESR test CRP test Surprising facts around celiac disease contrary to
