Welcome to Episode 218, featuring a Playwright Spotlight with Laura Thoma about her new Christmas play, MISS MARGARET'S BARTON COTTAGE CHRISTMAS SURPRISE, coming this December to Drama Works Theatre in Old Saybrook. We made up for lost time with a slew of Biblio Adventures, starting with a discussion with James R. Benn at the Mystic & Noank Library, after which we dashed over to see the new home of Bank Square Books in Stonington, who co-hosted the event. Next was the Windham-Campbell Literary Festival at Yale in New Haven, where we bought books curbside at the Possible Futures Bookmobile. Days later, we were thrilled to attend the grand opening of Montgomery & Taggert in Chester – Connecticut's first Romance Bookstore! Lastly, we saw DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS at Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek. We did some reading, too, since our last episode. Website(s): www.Gerispieler.com Facebook: Geri Spieler Twitter: None Regina of Warsaw is a story of extraordinary bravery and survival against all odds that mirrors much of what is happening in the world today Based on True Events: Regina of Warsaw an Unforgettable Story of Heartbreak and Survival PALO ALTO, Calif., June 3, 2024 ― By all accounts, Regina Anuszewicz was a woman ahead of her time. She defied the female norms and stereotypes of the early 1900s and fled the violence unfolding in Warsaw on her own, with an infant. And because she left Poland before the wars, she survived. And because she survived, her granddaughter, Geri Spieler, can share Regina's unforgettable story in the new book, Regina of Warsaw: Love, Loss and Liberation. “Readers will appreciate the premise of the story because, in some ways, it mirrors what is happening in the world today,” Spieler said. “It's a story of bravery and survival.” From the first page, readers are transported to 1906 Bialystok, Poland, where Regina Anuszewicz was visiting her sister and looking forward to a late June stroll along the Bialy River. It should have been an exciting time to stay overnight in the women's boarding house, but a violent pogrom blasted those plans as a rage of violence shook the town and Regina's hopes. Stormtroopers swarmed the streets and homes, and once they reached her sister's boarding house, all Regina could do was hide inside a closet, barely able to breathe as she heard screams and people begging for their lives. The trauma of that day shaped Regina's life and ignited her passion to take a more active role in fighting antisemitism. The atrocities that her family endured impacted every decision she made in life as she moved through the days and years, coloring her approach to every event that took her from Poland to the United States, and how she cared for the four children she sought to protect. About the Author Geri Spieler is a journalist, investigative reporter and award-winning speaker. She has written for the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Forbes, and as a research director for Gartner, a global technology advising company. She regularly contributed to Huffington Post and Truthdig.com, an award-winning investigative reporting website. She is also the author of San Francisco Values: Common Ground for Getting America Back on Track, and the multiple award-winning Housewife Assassin: The Woman Who Tried To Kill President Ford, which has been optioned for a movie. This Yom HaShoah bears a special significance in the history of the Jewish people. In the wake of the single deadliest day for Jews since the Shoah, October 7th looms as an ominous reminder that Jews must remember their past to ensure it does not repeat. In this Remembrance Day special episode of State of a Nation, we are fortunate enough to hear the living testimony of man who experienced first-hand the depths of human depravity.Dr Arnold Clevs recounts the harrowing details of his numerous brushes with death, and miraculous survival, as a child navigating the unimaginable horrors of 11 Nazi concentration camps,  and how ultimately, at the age of 87, he was able to make aliyah to join his people, who, like him, survived near annihilation and went on to thrive in their homeland, Israel. This is story of survival and tenacity, a testimony of kinship of the Jewish people even in their darkest of hours. This Yom HaShoah it is more critical than ever that the stories of those survivors that are still with us be recorded for posterity for all time, lest we forget the lessons of the past and be doomed to repeat them.Stay up to date at:https://www.stateofanationpodcast.com/X: https://twitter.com/stateofapodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/stateofapod/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... Amazon Book It's the summer of 1989. Batman owns the box office, Milli Vanilli rules the airwaves, stone-washed Cavariccis are all the rage... and Sebastian Riggs has bigger problems than being made to do the school bullies' homework or winning the attention of the coolest girl in his class. The one thing in the world he desperately needs is the one thing he can't seem to get: a vintage stunt radio-controlled airplane—the Dreamin'. Seb's mission is clear: make enough money to buy the Dreamin' and become a world-renowned R/C pilot, thereby earning his father's respect... or fail and remain a tormented loser for life. The stakes couldn't be any higher and summer job opportunities are in short supply. Finding obstacles at every turn and help in some surprising places, Seb embarks on a mission to fulfill his dreams of R/C glory and prove to the world he's a force to be reckoned with. But in a small town built on well-kept secrets, could his dream bring everyone's dark side to light? Praise for Dreamin' in '89 "T.G. Monahan convincingly conveys the awkwardness and uncertainty of adolescence while he vividly conjures the spirit of the late 1980s in this story of boyhood. The protagonist is especially well portrayed, although readers may question his single-mindedness. Monahan sensitively humanizes bullies, avoiding reducing them to caricatures. A redemption story for a boy whose carelessness has serious consequences, this work takes a fresh and candid approach to classic themes of growing up.” —The BookLife Prize "Dreamin in '89, a captivating storyline with a tumbling twist through a prominent era of history, is woven with intriguing scene and characters that make us remember our own youth. The nostalgia, the yearning for more, the longing to be somebody and the realization of what actually matters: friends sticking together and dreams coming to life." —Chloe Rachel Gallaway, author of The Soulful Child: Twelve Years in the Wilderness "A moving tale of one young man's journey to discovering what really matters in life. T.G. Monahan writes characters who either feel like your best friends or make you want to save them. A joy to read!"—Lorraine K. Today's episode speaks on behalf of those children who search for their forever home, who have been removed from their familiar environment for one reason or another and placed into a different permanent or temporary family environment. The hope is always that the new home is a better fit for raising that child. However, situations exist where the child is put in more danger.  I never thought about the foster care system until now. After this episode, I wont forget!I would like to welcome Jaci Cortez. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She was in foster care from ages of 4-21. Her mom was an immigrant from Guatemala. She was arrested for being in, as they say, the wrong place at the wrong time. Jaci was born here, and not allowed to leave with my mom.  She  was 4 years old when they arrested her mom and decided to deport her. Her grandma didn't have papers either and was afraid she would get deported so Jaci's only option was to be placed into foster care. Shortly after, an aunt decided to pick her up and it changed Jaci's  life forever... and not exactly in a good way! At one point, Jaci was broken from the abuse she endured for years. You will hear how her strong faith in God, resilience, and bravery lead her to the place she is today. In her words, "if they've ever been hurt or abused or anything negative, never give up. Nothing lasts forever."  My second guest, Jayne Amelia Larson, is a volunteer for CASA of Los Angeles, CA. She has a podcast, Bonus Babies, where you can find several episodes like the one you will hear today.  It wasn't until Jayne became a CASA that she understood foster kids are superheroes. They are amazingly adaptable, resourceful, resilient, and the fact that some of them make it through a terrible system, is simply because they are amazing. They are superheroes. What inspired you to become a CASA? What are the duties and responsibilities? How has it changed your life? Jayne answers these questions and many more!To check out more stories visit, www.ineedblue.netTo hear bonus babies visit, www.bonusbabies.comTo learn more about Sunflower Foster Youth Investment's Visit: Sunflower Foster Youth InvestmentPeace4Kids, https://www.peace4kids.org/ which serves the foster care community in the Willowbrook area of Los Angeles. For more information about becoming a CASA: the https://nationalcasagal.org/The background music is written, performed and produced exclusively by purple-planet.com.https://www.purple-planet.com/Support the podcast message: https://www.patreon.com/INEEDBLUEVisit https://ineedblue.net/  for additional stories

TOB listeners probably know that co-host Joanne Sandler worked at the United Nations for nearly 20 years. One of the many UN stories that fascinated her was a famous sexual harassment case.: Catherine Claxton was a fairly junior UN staff member who brought charges against an Under-Secretary General for grabbing her in his office in 1988 and then blocking her career after she rebuffed him. Catherine’s courage and tenacity in the face of profound intimidation (she and her closest friend were shot at, her apartment was broken into, her office was ransacked, senior women in the UN joined together to support the perpetrator) are the stuff of motion pictures. Catherine passed away in 2009. To make sure that her story is remembered and to honor Catherine’s courage and colleagues who supported her, Joanne and Julie Thompson – another long-time UN staffer –  interviewed scores of people, including her extraordinary pro-bono lawyers – Mary Dorman and Ellen Yaroshefsky. This episode of Two Old Bitches shares a curtain-opener for the 5-part radio series they hope to launch this Spring. While the story is 25-years old – and despite #metoo and Time’s Up -- the wall of patriarchy and privilege that Catherine confronted is almost as impenetrable today as it was then. (And, if you are (or know) a film producer/director, Joanne and Julie want to talk with you!)

Everybody on the planet has a story, and some of those stories are about struggles - struggles that can either motivate you or weigh you down; but only if you let it. If only we were all born with a silver spoon in our mouths, we wouldn’t have to experience adversities and life challenges that can send us straight to rock bottom. But we aren’t one of the privileged few, are we? You might have a personal story that can be quite embarrassing to tell - may it be going dead broke, quitting college, or living in your car. The good news is, humans have a remarkable capacity to bounce back after problems. Whatever you’re going through right now, for sure it’s not your very first problem. You’ve had your very first and you got through it! Now, how did that make you feel? Did it make you a stronger human being? Did it give you a sharpened perspective? I hear a resounding YES, and that’s thanks to your inherent potential to get better at resilience. We all have that ability. In our individual stories, we all have, even in the briefest time during our rock bottom days, that intense desire to bounce back. No matter how embarrassing your struggles may have been, remember that it’s not about you. It’s about the people you can help and who will in turn, help you too, when you create a compelling story. Let’s dive in! In this episode you will learn... How to turn your pain into purpose and your adversity into your advantage What makes an audience turn into raving fans How you can create a compelling story and succeed through your struggles Quotes:  -> Realize that your toughest times can be the greatest inspiration for other people -> People will relate more to your struggles than to your successes -> If you can get good at painting pictures and sharing your toughest times, you will attract an amazing tribe that will ride or die for you Question: How will you take your life your life story, from rock bottom to success?

Today I'm thrilled to be talking with Doug Phillips, who is the Professor of New Testament and Greek Studies, and the Chair of the Biblical Education Division at St. Louis Christian College, where I am also a Professor. Doug has multiple advanced degrees and is also working on a PhD in New Testament from Asbury Theological Seminary. On this episode, we're going to do a deep dive into the topic of storytelling in the Bible. Doug shares his journey to becoming a professor and helps us understand why Jesus' parables were so powerful. You'll learn what makes an effective story, the key components of Jesus' parables, and how to start applying those lessons to your own communication. Episode Highlights In this episode, you'll discover: How Doug became a Christian college professor. Why Doug had to learn 5 languages for his Ph.D program. What draws particular people to Old Testament or New Testament studies. What a parable is, and why Jesus used them. Why Jesus' stories have a shock value (and why your stories should have it also). The value of reading your Bible slowly and carefully. Why the story of Esther is so dramatically satisfying. Keys to understanding parables, including: time elements, characters (clothing, speech, etc.), storyline, rising and falling tension, and narrative foils. Practical steps for becoming a more effective communicator, no matter what your field. Key takeaways: 1. Understand your audience. It's vital that we speak to our listeners or readers in a way where they can relate. Jesus knew his audience and used stories that spoke to their needs and concerns. Take time to identify your ideal audience member or customer and think about how to communicate to them in a way they understand. 2. Use an inductive approach in your communication. It doesn't work to just say, “Here's what you should think, believe, or do.” A much better approach is to lead people in a way where they come to a conclusion on their own. Help people process the information you want them to know. As the saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.” Good storytelling can help us lead people instead of pushing them. 3. Study the Bible to improve your communication. It's easy to separate your spiritual life from your business or creative work. But you can learn a lot by studying the communication techniques and the literary genres of the Bible. Today's audiences have a short attention span. Whether you're a writer, speaker, podcaster, pastor, or other type of communicator, there is a lot you can learn from Jesus' short, punchy style of storytelling. In addition, a large percentage of the Bible is some form of narrative—40% of the Old Testament, and much of the New Testament (the Gospels, Acts, and most of Revelation.) So, there are a lot of stories that not only teach us on a spiritual and historical level, they also help us to become better storytellers if we are willing to pay attention and learn from this ancient book that is living and active in our lives today. There was a time when scoring 60 goals in a season in the NHL was rare. Dennis Maruk was one of the first to do it when scored 60 for the Washington Capitals in the 1981-82 season. And that came after scoring 50 the previous year! Yet, Dennis played in relative obscurity as he was a center for the California Golden Seals, the Cleveland Barons and the Minnesota North Stars – all teams that no longer exist! But his trade to a then awful Washington Capitals team was a blessing and helped turn Dennis Maruk from a good player into one the league’s most feared snipers. His just released book, “Dennis Maruk, The Unforgettable Story of Hockey’s Forgotten 60-Goal Man,” is a terrific book, very fun to read. And on this episode of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes, Dennis Maruk joins the podcast to take a look back on his career and talk about his book.
