My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark R Anderson, author of the book Sage Among the Pines. Mark, a Fulton Books author, retired after thirty-five years of distinguished service in the Department of Defense and ten years, concurrently, as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He completed his most recent book, Sage Among the Pines. A graduate of the University of Maryland and the National Intelligence University, Mark's upbringing in a military family instilled a love for travel and exploration, shaping his diverse perspectives and providing rich material for his creative works. Currently, the author resides in Pinehurst, North Carolina, with his wife and youngest daughter. In his spare time, Mark is an avid golfer at Pinehurst Country Club and enjoys filming book videos, alongside indulging in freshwater bass fishing across the Southeastern US. In my book review, I stated that I was excited to read this book before it came out on the shelves. Tom and Cynthia, along with their daughter, Lexi, have a great life. Until. Tom makes a mistake. Cynthia can't forgive him. No one tells Lexi what is going on. And then, without warning, Tom dies in a military training exercise. As Cynthia spirals into depression, her daughter spirals into adolescent rage. Only a sage among the pines, in the form of a grandfather-grandmother duo, can save them. This is a healing journey - healing from loss and betrayal - as well as a forgiveness journey. It shows how complicated life can become, even when people truly love one another. I enjoyed Mark's book because his characters are real. If you enjoy character-driven fiction, then this one is for you. Buttigieg dropped out of the race on March 1, 2020, and endorsed Joe Biden the following day. In December 2020, President-elect Biden named Buttigieg as his nominee to be Secretary of Transportation. Dr. Javier Valle is an Assistant Professor in the Emory Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, a medical officer in the United States Navy Reserve, and a senior VA Quality Scholar Fellow--a 2-year healthcare quality improvement fellowship at the Atlanta VA Health Care System. Board certified in preventive medicine with a Master's degree in Public Health in epidemiology, he practices lifestyle medicine at the Emory Lifestyle Medicine Clinic in Dunwoody and teaches lifestyle medicine to second and third-year medical students at the Emory School of Medicine. At the Atlanta VA Health Care System, he is the lead for implementation and evaluation activities of the Whole Health System. Whole Health is a national VA healthcare delivery system that is transforming the model of care from a disease-centered to a Veteran-centered approach to health. Dr. Valle talks about the new VA initiative - Whole Health. As VA shifts from a health-care system focused primarily on treating disease to one guided by a personalized health plan that considers the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and environmental needs of Veterans, the Whole Health System acknowledges that health care involves more than the physical human body. The whole health model is a holistic look at the many areas of life that can affect someone's health — work environment, relationships, diet, sleep patterns, and more. Father Mode is the author of The Grunt Padre, the biography of Vietnam War hero and Navy Chaplain Father Vincent R. Capodanno, MM, whose 1967 death in battle while assisting U.S. Marines posthumously earned him the Medal of Honor, the U.S. Military's highest decoration. The Catholic Church has declared Father Capodanno, a Maryknoll missionary from Staten Island, N.Y., a “Servant of God,” formally initiating his Cause for canonization. The AMS is the Promoter of the Cause.Prior to his priestly ordination, Father Mode underwent formation at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. He joined the United States Navy Reserve in 2005 and was assigned to active duty in 2007. Over the course of his career so far, Father Mode has served on two aircraft carriers, including the USS Harry S. Truman, and numerous deployments, including to the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. He was also assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy where he helped to form future leaders of the military. Father Mode actively supports lay ministry in naval church communities through direct supervision of, and communication with, lay leaders, providing information and encouragement to meet challenges.Currently assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, Father Mode went to the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, bringing relief to survivors. The storm, which struck in early November, left more than 6,000 dead and nearly 1,800 missing. In the Easter edition of SALUTE, the AMS's quarterly news magazine, Father Mode recounts hand-delivering spiritual supplies, including wine, hosts, rosaries, and liturgical books, to a parish in the devastated town of Guiuan, where the church and attached rectory were reduced to rubble, leaving the faithful to attend Mass outdoors.
