This week, Chris Chavez and Megan Connelly unpack the new U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifying Standards. Preet Majithia hops on for the second half to recap Grand Slam Track: Philadelpia, Anna Hall's breakthrough heptathlon, preview the Rome Diamond League, and more takeaways from the past week.Takeaways from the new U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifying Standards:– USATF will return to “A” and “B” standards for 2028. The “A” standard will be determined at a later date in coordination with the LOC. Athletes with the “A” standard will get travel funding to the Olympic Trials. Athletes with the “B” standard will be guaranteed entry to the Olympic Trials.– For the “B” standard: Women who want to race will have to run 2:37:00 or faster. This is the same as the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard. Women will also be able to qualify if they run 1:12:00 for the half marathon or faster, which is the same as the 2024 qualifier.– For the “B” standard: Men who want to race will have to run 2:16:00 or faster. This is two minutes faster than the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard. Men can also enter if they run 1:03:00 or faster for the half marathon, which is the same as the 2024 qualifier. Going off USATF's 2024 qualifiers list, 139 of the 220 qualified men ran faster than 2:16:00.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Megan Connelly | @meganmorantwwe on Instagram Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “I'm patient. I call it aggressively patient. I'm going hard for it all — but if it doesn't happen, there's still a process and I chip away for next time. That's how you become a champion. You don't just go out there and run and win. You have to have a journey and work hard. I'm always going hard.”Welcome back to Office Hours on the CITIUS MAG Podcast, where we explore the philosophy of the coaches who push the edges of human potential with some of the best athletes in track and field.Today's guest is someone who has climbed to some of the highest highs in the sport. Joanna Hayes is an Olympic gold medalist, a Hall of Famer, and currently the director of track and field and cross country at her alma mater UCLA. In 2024, she was named USATF's Coach of the Year — a recognition not just for her competitive pedigree, but her ability to cultivate greatness in others. She's coached legends like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin, ushered in record-breaking seasons at both USC and UCLA, and she's done it all while remaining grounded in values of respect, discipline, family, and joy. In this conversation, we explore what success does and doesn't change about how she leads, what it feels like to return to the place where it all started, the realities of coaching both elite professionals and college athletes and how the two are more connected than you think. We talk about legacy, resilience, motherhood, and what it means to show up not just as a coach, but as a human being who makes space for culture, connection, and yes, sometimes TikToks and fresh fits. Coach Hayes's story is one of full circle moments and forward motion. She's creating a new chapter at UCLA and you'll hear in this conversation why it's one worth watching and rooting for. Imagine this: you're standing inside a trendy L.A. grocery store—maybe it's Erewhon. You've got a cooler full of canned soda that claims to be good for your gut. You're not a celebrity and you're not even the founder of the company. You're just a guy with a vision, a few samples, and the audacity to talk your way into a product launch. That was Steven Vigilante back in 2018. Today, Olipop—the better-for-you soda brand that he helped bring to life—is in more than 30,000 stores across the country. They've partnered with Barbie, NASCAR, the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and somehow even made it into a Luke Combs music video. But it didn't start there. Steven cut his teeth in venture capital, betting early on health forward brands. When he saw the potential in a fiber-packed functional soda, he jumped in—first as an advisor, and then as the architect behind some of the boldest growth and partnership strategies in beverage today. So how do you build a soda brand that dares to take on the likes of Coke and Pepsi? One that trades sugar for science and still wins hearts and taste buds across America? In addition to all of that, they're also major partners for CITIUS MAG.This is the latest episode of The Build with Steven Vigilante, Director of Media and Partnerships at Olipop, on staying scrappy, scaling smart, and crafting a new kind of soda, one can at a time.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Steven Vigilante | @stevenvigilante on XSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSPILLAR PERFORMANCE: We all know that sleep is where the magic happens. “I think it's really important to celebrate the intermediate steps along the way because if you're only thinking about the highest level of the NCAA…it gets overwhelming. You have to have those goals along the way.”We're back with more Office Hours episodes. My guest today is someone that's become synonymous with Hoya distance running — Brandon Bonsey, the head men's cross country coach and longtime leader of Georgetown's storied middle-distance program. He's more than a decade into his coaching career on the Hilltop — Bonsey has guided the Hoyas to dozens of All-America honors, multiple Big East titles, and a steady presence at the national level across cross country and track. A proud alum himself, Bonsey competed for Georgetown from 2004 to 2009, and since returning to his alma mater, he's played a pivotal role in both honoring the program's legacy and evolving it for today's generation. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to coach at the place that shaped you, what he learned from mentors like Pat Henner and Chris Fox, and how he's helping develop two of the most exciting young middle-distance talents in the country — Tinoda Matsatsa and Abel Teffra. We also get into recruiting at a high-academic institution, what sets the Georgetown culture apart, and how Bonsey blends emotional investment with long-view composure as a coach. This is a great one for anyone who loves hearing how tradition meets innovation in today's NCAA coaching landscape.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Brandon Bonsey | @thebonz21 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. I think for us coming off a crazy Paris, having an idea of the direction we're going and the team that's going to help us get to that place is really exciting, so we're really looking forward to the next four years.”My guests for today's episode are two of the most electric and inspiring figures in track and field: Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall. In this episode, we chat with them about why they chose to go with the swoosh, but also, more importantly for Hunter, why it signals the brand's deeper commitment to Paralympic athletes.Tara, a two-time Olympian and the reigning Olympic and world indoor champion in the long jump, is just as magnetic off the runway as she is on it. Hunter, a three-time Paralympian and five-time medalist, just captured his first gold in the 400m T62 in Paris and has been pushing the limits of what's possible in adaptive sport since day one.In this episode, we chat about what they're building beyond the medals and what's next for two of the sport's most compelling athletes to follow up an astounding 2024.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuests: Tara Davis-Woodhall | _tarraa_ on Instagram + Hunter Woodhall on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “It's almost been ten years and for me it was just kind of time. Contract changes, life changes now with having a two-year-old and wanting to grow the family side of things... A lot of factors all came together at the right time for me to make the decision.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Murphy, who's been part of American middle-distance running history for the better part of a decade and is now officially hanging up his spikes. From the small town of New Madison, Ohio, to the Olympic podium in Rio — Clayton's career is the stuff of dreams. He was the kid from the Mid-American Conference who took down giants. The collegiate star who doubled up at NCAAs. The 21-year-old who kicked his way to Olympic bronze in the 800 meters — running 1:42.93, still the fifth-fastest time by an American in history.Over the years, Clayton's worn the red, white, and blue across the globe — from the Pan Am Games, where he struck gold, to two Olympic Games, multiple U.S. titles, and countless memorable finishes. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. He's battled injuries, coaching changes, and the highs and lows that come with being one of the best in a brutal event. And now, after a career that spanned over a decade at the professional level — Clayton is here to reflect on what it meant, how he made peace with the decision, and what's next.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “If I just focus on competing, it's turned out to be really fun and turned out to work in my favor each time. That's been the mindset: Let's just race, focus on competing, and not really worry about the clock. That's a lot of how I approached Boston.”After finishing one spot off of the Team USA squads in the marathon and the 10,000m for the Olympics and the half marathon for the World Road Running Championships, Jess McLain has made it a habit of being so close, yet just off of these national teams. But on Patriots Day in Boston, she kicked it open, running a smart, gutsy race that saw her surge through the Newton Hills strategically with Emma Bates and Sara Hall chasing a lead pack and then closing in 5:15 seconds for the final mile. Jess cemented her place as one of the top contenders in American distance running. In today's conversation, we get into what changed with this particular marathon build, from training under coach David Roche to how she's getting used to these major marathon scenes. We talk a lot about the importance of carbs and how that's also been a game changer for her as well as why her drive to compete instead of focusing on times works so well. “When you're in that momentum phase, every week is just exciting. You look forward to the next workout because you're just curious – I did well last week, let's see how well I can do this week. It's just fun to see everything come together at the right time. That's what Boston was. I was just excited because I knew how much fitness I had gained in the last month. It was really just going out there and seeing what I had.”Sometimes the best breakthroughs don't come after a perfect buildup — they come from trusting your gut, leaning into the tough days and racing fearlessly when it matters most. That's exactly what Annie Frisbie did at the 2025 Boston Marathon.Running through a rocky buildup that started with an upper hamstring tear, Annie put herself right in the mix early on, going out aggressively with the lead pack and refusing to back down when the race got tough. She crossed the line in 2:23:21, nearly a three-minute personal best and the eighth-fastest Boston finish ever by an American woman. It's a huge step forward for the Minnesota Distance Elite athlete, who first turned heads with a 2:26 debut at the 2021 New York City Marathon and has steadily — and quietly — been building toward a moment like this ever since.Today, Annie joins me to talk about the full story behind her Boston breakthrough — the injury recovery, the confidence building, the decision to go with the leaders early — and why this is just the beginning.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Annie Frisbie | @anniefrisb3 on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia are back on the mic to break down one of the biggest weekends in recent marathon history. They dive into Sabastian Sawe's breathtaking 2:02:27 victory at the 2025 London Marathon — including his devastating move at 30K, and what this win means for the marathon World #1 debate. On the women's side, Tigst Assefa delivered a gutsy performance to break the women's-only world record in 2:15:50, securing a massive payday and maybe reminding us all that she could be the very best women's marathoner in the world. The guys also discuss Jacob Kiplimo's impressive marathon debut, Eliud Kipchoge's graceful approach to this new chapter of his career and other key performances. We also unpack the Diamond League opener in Xiamen, China— including Karsten Warholm's world best over 300m hurdles and Faith Kipyegon's near-world record run. We'll record a preview of Grand Slam Track: Miami later this week on-site from Florida.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I just like being an underdog. It has this feeling that almost reduces the pressure… I'm not going to change anything, but I'm going to try and go out there and show everyone that I can do it. That it's possible.”In a race built on tradition, it takes something truly special to rewrite history, and that's exactly what Sharon Lokedi delivered at the 2025 Boston Marathon. Facing off once again with Hellen Obiri, the two-time defending champion and the Olympic bronze medalist, Lokedi flipped the script. When Obiri made a move with about one mile to go, Sharon just didn't hang on; she countered with a decisive surge of her own, and the result was a 2:17:22 victory – the fastest Boston Marathon ever run by a woman, smashing the old course record by more than 2.5 minutes. It was a win built on boldness.Lokedi stayed composed through an aggressive early pace, answered every challenge and move along the way, and delivered a ferocious negative split. In the process, she claimed her place in history not just as a champion, but as a new standard bearer for women's marathoning in Boston.Today, Sharon joins me to talk about the race that had her questioning the pace the whole entire way, her rivalry with Hellen Obiri, and how belief, guts, and a little bit of joy carried her all the way to the finish line into the arms of her mother on Boylston Street.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Sharon Lokedi | @shazrine on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “Whether it's true or not, that's what I've got to believe. That's the faith I've got to have moving forward. Regardless of what other people say, or what other people think, there is power in truth and being honest with myself. There's got to be faith and there's got to be belief that I not only can close that gap, but that I am in that tier and I can compete with the best.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Young. While Conner Mantz's 2:05 may have stolen the headlines, Clayton Young once again proved why he belongs in any conversation about the best marathoners in America. On a competitive day in Boston, he ran 2:0:7:04 – nearly a full minute personal best to finish seventh overall, tying his highest ever finish at a World Marathon Major. He did it despite a calf cramp at mile 20 and on an up and down lead up that included some frustrating half marathon results. But that's the kind of thing about Clayton's success, quiet consistency, big stage composure, and a resilience that keeps him right alongside the best, including his training partner and Olympic teammate, Conner Mantz. This Boston result marks their fourth straight marathon finishing as the top two Americans in every field, and every time Clayton Young shows up.In this conversation, we get into the Boston Marathon as it unfolded, what was actually going through his head when that mile 20 move got made, when that cramp hit, and why he's so good at staying in the mix.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Clayton Young | @_clayton_young_ on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “It became, ‘No, I'm attacking this marathon.' It was more of an assertive mentality. Hearing the crowds roar, I was fighting for the podium… It was like, ‘This is it.' I'm doing what I set out to do and I feel great.' It was a very special moment. I was pretty zoned in, but I enjoyed it and I'd love to live through it again.”On a brisk April morning in Boston, Conner Mantz delivered the marathon breakthrough that he's been waiting for. Running fearlessly from the front, Mantz surged through the Newton Hills, hung with a deep pack through about 40 kilometers, and stopped the clock in 2:05:08 seconds — a massive personal best and the second-fastest time ever run by an American. Boston is not a record eligible course, but this was a major performance. He finished fourth overall and just four seconds off the podium in one of the fastest editions in Boston Marathon history. It was a performance that firmly placed Mantz among the world's elite, showing he's not just America's top distance talent, but he's now a serious contender at the sport's highest level too. This came just months after breaking the American record in the half marathon in Houston and just weeks after backing that up with a 59:15 in New York. It's been a big year and it's only April. In today's episode, Conner and I talked through that Boston effort from studying past races, to covering all the big moves, to racing for time and place. We also dig into what's next, chasing Khalid Khannouchi's American record, and the big step forward in American distance running.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Conner Mantz | @connermantz on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. The 2025 Boston Marathon promises an exciting blend of redemption stories, debut intrigue, and head-to-head rivalries across both elite fields. On the men's side, defending champion Sisay Lemma returns after last year's audacious front-running victory, facing off against 2024 Chicago champ John Korir, two-time Boston winner Evans Chebet, rising Kenyan Daniel Mateiko, and U.S. hopeful Conner Mantz. Other contenders include Lesotho's Tebello Ramakongoana and Americans Clayton Young and CJ Albertson, each hoping to outlast the pack or capitalize on race-day chaos. In the women's race, Hellen Obiri is chasing a rare three-peat in Boston, entering as the clear favorite despite a strong field. She'll be challenged by past podium finishers Amane Beriso and Sharon Lokedi, 2:16 marathoner Yalemzerf Yehualaw, and rising marathon star Irene Cheptai. The American field is led by Keira D'Amato in her Boston debut, Emma Bates returning to form, and Dakota Popehn riding Olympic momentum. Young talents like Gabi Rooker, Jessica McClain, and Jackie Gaughan round out a promising domestic squad, with veterans Des Linden and Sara Vaughn adding experience to the mix.Cooler temperatures, slight winds, and the Newton Hills promise another unpredictable Patriot's Day. Tactics, toughness, and timing will determine who claims the tape on Boylston.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I wouldn't toe the line for any race if I didn't think I could win. I'm a David amongst Goliaths out there, but I think I've always got a chance [to win].”In 2024, Dakotah Popehn wasn't on most people's U.S. Olympic team shortlist, but that didn't stop her from running herself onto the team with a fearless third place finish at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and a gutsy run in Paris that saw her leading the Olympic marathon around halfway. Popehn turned heads and rewrote the expectations around her name. Now she's back on the major stage – this time lining up in Boston with confidence, momentum, and a whole new set of eyes on her. She's won Grandma's Marathon and has been to the Olympic Games, but in the five World Marathon Majors she's raced, she's actually never cracked the top ten. Could that change in Boston? In this episode, we talk about how she's navigated a year of breakthroughs, how she's approaching Boston as both an underdog and a contender, and what she thinks of PUMA's Fast-R 3, which is already making headlines as the latest great innovation in the super shoes era.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Dakotah Popehn | @dakotahlindwurm on Instagam SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “That's one of the beauties of Boston: that anyone can win on the day... There's just too many variables. So do I have a shot? Yes. While that shot might be slim, it might be small, it's definitely there and I definitely think about it. That's what motivates me and makes me want to toe the line on race day and see what happens.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Young. It should come as no surprise that this episode pairs well with last week's interview with Conner Mantz because since fall 2023, he's lined up alongside Conner in nearly every major race from Chicago to the Olympic Trials, Paris to New York, and most recently, in Houston back in January. While the spotlight often lands on Conner Mantz, it's impossible to overlook what Clayton has done: second at the Trials, ninth at the Olympics, seventh in New York City, and a personal best of 60:52 in Houston earlier this year for the half marathon. He's always been in the mix – always one move, one moment away from turning the tables. In today's conversation, Clayton reflects on the highs and lows of this particular training block, how he's managed to regain his confidence late in the build, and how he's approaching his Boston Marathon debut this upcoming Monday.Since he started representing himself, he also shares a bit of how he's making a bet on himself and how he went about structuring his contract for the race. It also wouldn't be fair if I didn't ask him what he thought his chances were of winning on race day. This episode talks about competition, belief, and the challenge of chasing your best when you're already running with the best every day in training.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Clayton Young | @_clayton_young_ on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “The part I also really love is finding the edges: How do we pursue the elite edge of world-class performance? I think as I've gotten further, that part is exciting me more and more as we go on here. But it doesn't have to just be world- class – how do you get people to find out how good they can really be?”When Chris Miltenberg took the helm at North Carolina in 2019, the Tar Heels distance programs had not won an ACC cross country title since before most of his current athletes were born. Fast forward to today and under Miltenberg's leadership, UNC has not only climbed back to the top of the ACC podium in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track, but they've reestablished themselves as a legitimate national contender too.Miltenberg has led UNC to top ten finishes at the NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships, he's coached Parker Wolfe to UNC's first-ever 5000m outdoor national title, signed the program's highest ranked recruiting class, and has built a culture of buy-in, belief, and bold ambition. Most recently, he's coming off an indoor season where Ethan Strand broke the collegiate records in the 3000m and mile before taking the NCAA title. Makayla Paige won the women's 800m to become the Tar Heels' first women's NCAA champion since 2018.But this isn't just a North Carolina story; Miltenberg's impact has been felt at every stop. At Stanford, he led the Cardinals to a top five program of the year finish and coached national champions like Grant Fisher, Sean McGorty, and Elise Cranny. At Georgetown, he guided the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country title with the team that was led by Emily Infeld. In today's conversation, we talk about how he's building something sustainable in Chapel Hill, his approach to culture, and what it takes to coach through transitions, setbacks, and expectations. We also dig into athlete development, milestone moments, and why being present is one of the most underrated skills a coach can have.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris Miltenberg | @chris.miltenberg on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I think I'm a guy who can win these races on the right day. I just need to prove that. I think the way to prove that, at least to myself, is to finish in the top three… I'd rather focus on getting on the podium in some of these races."Welcome back Conner Mantz to the CITIUS MAG Podcast for his 9th career appearance on the show. He's back ahead of his return to the 2025 Boston Marathon and he's bringing some serious momentum with him. In the past year alone, Mantz has shattered the American half marathon record in Houston, backed it up with another 57:15 performance at the NYC Half, which is a non-record eligible course, yet quite the performance. He's continued his streak of finishing as the top American in every major marathon since the fall of 2023.We talk about what's different this time around in Boston after his 11th place finish there in 2023, what he's learned from racing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's best, and what he takes from another upcoming race with Clayton Young. We also go through some of the top contenders in the field and Conner expresses his thoughts on who's got a shot of winning and what he's taken away from each of those competitors. We explore where his mindset is heading into Patriots Day 2025 – a day that could crown the next American to break through on Boston's legendary course. Nothing beats the drama of the U.S. Trials. Unlike many other countries, which select their teams based on a combination of championship results and committee decisions, Team USA sets its team in the most objective way possible: top three at the Trials make the team. Of course, those athletes need to have achieved the Olympic standard or World ranking, so there still might be some numbers to crunch while athletes are handed those little American flags, but in most cases, it's simple. You've got to perform your best on the day to book your ticket. In this episode, Chris Chavez and David Melly break down everything you need to know about the distance events at the U.S. Olympic Trials. "What's exciting is that in this new role, I'm able to bring athletes and fans what they've been asking for and just screaming out for – more head-to-head matchups, more fans getting to know these athletes, athletes able to connect better with their fans, athletes being able to realize more value for themselves. Fans are frustrated that they're hearing these stories that the athletes, who they love to support, are frustrated that they're not able to capitalize on their greatness. So with Grand Slam Track, I'm able to bring that to fans and athletes. That brings a smile. It makes me happy." Michael Johnson is one of the greatest sprinters of all-time with his 12 gold medals. However, he joins me as the new commissioner of Grand Slam Track. Michael is on a mission to revive his beloved sport, track and field, which has long struggled to capture the U.S. public's attention outside of the Olympics. Grand Slam is set to debut in 2025. This league aims to engage fans with a TV-friendly format, spotlighting the sport's biggest stars, and drawing new audiences through compelling storytelling. I speak for CITIUS MAG in sharing our excitement to be partnering with the league to share in their mission on athlete storytelling and we'll be helping them with our own resources and expertise to connect them with our super loyal and engaged track and field diehard audience. With a significant investment exceeding $30 million, Michael is determined to bring the essence of the sport to the forefront, putting athletes center stage like never before. Grand Slam Track will host four annual Slams in global cities – starting in April 2025. Los Angeles will serve as the league's home, hosting one of these exciting events. The league has already signed its first star racer, 400m hurdles Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. In my conversation with Michael, we talk about the fan's frustration around now watching some of the top stars compete more and how this aims to change much of that. Each year, 48 elite athletes will be named GST Racers, competing across various categories and vying for substantial prize money. Hear a bit more about Michael's vision for the future of track and field and the challenges he's tackling. We'll delve into how this new league plans to fit in among the existing competitions like the Diamond League and leverage the excitement of the upcoming Paris Olympics and the Netflix series to galvanize support from fans and athletes alike. This week in track and field, Chris Chavez and Anderson Emerole recap some of the highlights from New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Philadelphia, where we saw Quincy Wilson run 45.13 in the open 400m, Drew Griffith break 4:00 for the first sub-4 in NBN history, Sadie Engelhardt closed a 4:37 mile with a 61s final lap, Christian Miller dropped a 9.95s in the 100m and more. We baked in our interviews with Quincy, Sadie and Christian at the end of this episode. We dive into Part I of our U.S. Olympic Trials previews by tackling the sprints. We hit every top storyline in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles and some field events. "This particular conversation, I did cry more. It was the most pivotal moment of my life. I was just telling her, ‘This is my breakthrough moment.' I told her that before this even happened… I told her, ‘Just let me feel you, let me know that you're here.' And she did in the blocks." McKenzie Long of Ole Miss swept the sprint titles with victories in the 100 meters, 200 meters and anchoring the 4x100 meters. All of that happened in a span of about 90 minutes. Her winning time in the 200 meters of 21.83 seconds is the fastest in the world as we head into the U.S. Olympic Trials. She has a very strong chance of qualifying for Team USA and making the Olympic team, if she finishes in the top three of either individual event. After one of the races in Eugene, McKenzie got emotional on-air on ESPN while dedicating her win to her mother, who died during this past indoor season. In this episode, McKenzie opens up about how she grieved and coped with the loss while in the middle of a season. She shares how she sees and feels her mother's presence with her daily. A beautiful photo captured by photographer Kane Nguyen went viral where she's sitting in the bleachers at Hayward Field with her head down, reflecting and connecting with her mother. She tells us about that photo and a surprise she had when she got into the blocks before the 100 meters. "You never know what you can do until you're going out and doing it. You have no shot at running fast unless you give yourself an opportunity to run fast. If you go out in a race slow, how are you going to run fast if you're already not going out hard enough? I think that's just kind of given me the confidence that, ‘You can do it.'" The University of Virginia star stole the show on the final day of the NCAA Championships with a crazy kick in the 800 meters. Cohen went from last to first in the final 100 meters, clocking a personal best of 1:44.97. Cohen's journey is nothing short of inspirational. Just a year ago, he was virtually unknown, running for Division II University of Tampa and struggling to regain his form after a stress fracture in his femur. Despite a personal best of 1:48, he never broke 1:53 in six 800-meter races last spring. With results like these, Division I interest for his fifth year wasn't extreme. But University of Virginia coaches Vin Lananna and Trevor Dunbar saw something special in Cohen's kick and decided to take a chance on him. Throughout the 2024 season, Cohen showed remarkable improvement, running 1:47 in April and third at the ACCs with a 1:46 in May. He ran 1:45 at regionals. Even after these impressive times, he was still largely overlooked heading into the NCAA Championships. That all changed during the prelims, where Cohen showcased an insane burst of speed, going from last to first in the final straight. That video caught my attention and some of the track internet community. In the final, Cohen replicated his prelims strategy and ran close to even splits and finishing in 1:44.97. His racing style drew comparisons to Robby Andrews, who won the 2011 NCAA 800 title in similar fashion for the same school. Although Cohen was only ten years old during Andrews' iconic race, he now finds himself following in those legendary footsteps. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
"It means a lot to me. Especially to all my teammates and my leadership in the Army. If you make the Olympics while you are in the Army, it's a huge accomplishment. Making these Olympics is not only for me. It's about people serving in the Army. All those people in the Army. Also, it's about my teammates. When I make the team I know my teammates will also want to make the team because I am one of the leaders in our platoon. If you see the leader making the team, you want to make it too...It's not about me. It's about representing other people who are looking up to me. I'm so happy. I'm grateful. I can't wait to represent Team USA and represent the Army too." Finally! After four months of stress and uncertainty, Leonard Korir is heading to the Olympics. Just last week, World Athletics added one universality place and four rankings places to the Olympic marathon field on Tuesday. With that, Korir gets the United States' final spot – thanks to CJ Albertson's ranking unlocking it – and he will be racing on Aug. 10th. Korir was third at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, which was awesome because he had just missed the U.S. Olympic marathon team for Tokyo by just three seconds. This will be his second Olympic team after representing the United States in the 10,000m in Rio de Janeiro back in 2016. Following the Trials, Korir went to Rotterdam in April in hopes of getting under the Olympic standard but faded in the second half of the race to a 2:12:47 finish. We discuss that race, his preparations for Paris and why this means a lot not just to him but also to his fellow members of the U.S. Army. We waited until it was official to get Lenny on the podcast. Now we've completed the set. We have podcasts with all six of the U.S. Olympians for Paris + the two alternates (Jess McClain and Elkanah Kibet, who have amazing stories) – you can go back and listen to those race recaps and reflections. We just wrapped up a jam-packed weekend with track and field taking place in Eugene with the NCAA Championships, Portland for the Portland Track Festival, Rome for the European Championships and New York City for the NYC Grand Prix. NYC GRAND PRIX Lots of action to recap including Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone giving the 400m American record a scare; Noah Lyles clocked a 19.77 into the wind, Eric Holt goes viral after taking 2022 world champion Jake Wightman to the line in the 1500m, Elaine Thompson Herah may be seriously injured after pulling up after the 100m. But the biggest story was 2022 World champion Fred Kerley and his sponsor Asics decided to part ways. Kerley came out onto the track wearing a competitor's product. Kerley did not end up racing after slipping in the blocks twice. He was not disqualified but elected not to race. NCAA Championships From McKenzie Long and Parker Valby to Shane Cohen and Parker Wolfe, we look at some of the collegiate stars who could be poised for a breakthrough to make the U.S. Olympic team in just a few weeks. "I think anyone who has run, who has made running a part of their life, knows that it really does transform us as people. No matter what it is that we want to accomplish in life, we think that it makes everybody better by creating that habit of being physically active, moving your body, whether it's physical health or mental health. So we're hoping that this new way of talking about our mission and what we do will draw more people into the sport, into our community, and get people moving." We're off for the holidays but we didn't want to leave your podcast feed empty this week so here's a recent conversation that Kyle Merber and I had with PUMA Elite's Patrick Tiernan and Fiona O'Keeffe while at The Running Event in Austin, Texas. They're fantastic leaders on the up and coming team based in North Carolina that is coached by Alistair and Amy Cragg. Tiernan sat down with us just two months after running 2:11:02 in his marathon debut at the Chicago Marathon. Fiona has put together a strong year that was highlighted by a 67:42 half marathon in Houston and her first national title at the U.S. 10-Mile Championships in October. She was also the top PUMA woman in their win at Sound Running's Cross Champs, which was the day after we recorded this. “All they threw at me was ‘impossible, impossible, impossible.' I said, ‘OK. I accept but how are you going to do it?' They said, ‘You don't get it. It's impossible.' I said, ‘No, you don't get it. How are you going to make it happen anyway?' He's been a runner and athlete his entire life but in 2010, he was looking to pitch several major sportswear companies on selling runners and athletes a new experience and feel while running as opposed to just another product. When he was turned away several times, he took it upon himself to create a prototype and pursue the project independently. He showed off the first Frankenstein shoe to his friends David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti and they decided to partner on starting On. The brand has since partnered with tennis legend Roger Federer and IPO'ed in September 2022 with a $6 billion valuation. I had the chance to sit down with Olivier last month and got a bit of the story of how this company came together and why they're going to continue pushing innovation and high performance with their athletes and a major investment in running. “Like any athlete or person, when you cross one task off your list you think, ‘I can do better.' After CIM, I feel OK and I ran what I ran but you know what? I probably can run faster. I felt very controlled and ran a very smart, conservative race where I knew I would successfully complete this task and this mission that I'm on.” Maegan Krifchin is a professional marathoner for the Atlanta Track Club and I decided to have her on because I needed to know more about the wild past 30 days for her. It starts on Nov. 6 with the New York City Marathon where she ran 2:40:52 in hot conditions. Two weeks later, she ran 2:31:42 to take second in the cold conditions of the Philadelphia Marathon. She capped off her year with a 2:29:21 in perfect conditions to finish 7th in a personal best at the California International Marathon, which also served as the USATF Marathon Championships. Three things happen here: (1) What you think of you, (2) what others think of you, and (3) what God thinks of you. This is an episode focusing on the biblical viewpoint on the body. Culture dictates to us something completely different, and the truth is - it always has. We are wonderfully made according to Psalms 139:14-15, and for all that can be imperfect about the created order and even about our physical appearance, the human body - divine as it is - is an amazing miracle. So, why do we still struggle when we look into a mirror? There's a culture script and especially our own insecurity self-talk that keeps us distracted, defeated, and even addicted to our looks. It's pretty much the enemy's plan to make you feel less than. Imagine how miraculous the conception and birth of children must have seemed in Old Testament times without ultrasound or scientific understanding. The whole process was captured in mystery and wonder. But even with technological advances and our ability to peer inside the womb, it is still an absolute miracle the way that a child is formed. Beautiful, amazing, and worshipful are words that come to mind when a baby is born into the world. It is sincerely a declaration that God is real, life is a gift, and that we are wonderfully made. www.sueduffield.com

On Sunday, the New York City Marathon returned to full capacity for the first time since 2019 and although the warmer conditions made it tough for runners across the board, the city was alive to celebrate everyone from the 1st to the 50,000th finisher. Kenyans swept the men's and women's pro races for the fourth time this year on the World Marathon Majors stage. The women's race saw a major surprise as Sharon Lokedi, the former NCAA champion out of Kansas, won in 2:23:23 in her debut marathon. 33-year-old Evans Chebet came away with the victory in a wild and unpredictable men's race in 2:08:41 to complete his Boston-New York title double in 2022. Aliphine Tuliamuk and Scott Fauble were the top Americans on the day. We chat through the pro races + Kyle's experience running the race + my first time on a TV broadcast. My guest for this episode is Jos Hermens. He is the founder of Global Sports Communication and the NN Running team. We recorded this episode back in April when I made a trip to Rotterdam to host the team's 5th anniversary. When they started in 2017, they announced themselves as “the first professional running team” with stars like Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele as the faces of the team. They've also made major strides by bringing in other major sponsors to back the team. We dive into the business side of the team, how Jos transitioned from an Olympian to an agent, what he'd like to see changed within the sport, his obsession with breaking records, stories working with Kipchoge, Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie, plus much more. Slip-N-Slide Records recording artist Teenear is carving a lane of her own. The Miami native began singing at the age of 3 and honed her craft through participating in pageants, talent shows and in church. With her sights set on singing, dancing and acting, Teenear is poised to be Miami’s next breakout star. At 15 the singer took her parents’ advice and uploaded a performance cover of Rihanna’s “Stay” to her YouTube channel and began creating a buzz. Teenear kept the momentum going with a cover of Meghan Trainor’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” which left quite the impression on the star herself. In 2015, she released her debut single; “Friday Night” featuring rapper Sage The Gemini, then followed up with the mid-tempo “Streetlights” in 2016. “Friday Night” went global when Japanese dancer Kahonna used the song for a choreography video and “Streetlights” received a dancehall inspired remix featuring rapper Trina in the fourth quarter of 2016. The two releases display the singer’s progressive growth that only continues with the new music that she is preparing to release. Teenear kicked off 2017 with “Last Night,” a breakup anthem that that fuses R&B with bounce and kept the momentum going with the Velous-produced “Something Else.” Yearly, the Teenear teams up with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan and the Ted Lucas foundation for their annual turkey giveaway. Her philanthropic efforts also include visiting the Miami Children’s Hospital and working with the American Cancer Foundation. With influences that include trailblazers like Mariah Carey, Brandy, Aaliyah and Beyoncé, Teenear has vocal prowess and a positive image that is reflected in her music.
