“With 200 to go, I felt really strong. I wasn't really burning yet. With about 120 to go coming off the curve, I saw everybody right there. I was like, ‘I feel amazing!' The crowd all stood up and it was super electric. I was like, ‘I have a shot now.'”My guest for today's episode is Cooper Lutkenhaus, the 16-year-old Texan who just ran one of the most astonishing races in American track and field history at the U.S. Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Cooper placed second in the men's 800m in 1:42.27 — a U18 world record, a three second personal best, and the fourth fastest time ever run by an American. He finished just behind Donovan Brazier, the former world champion who made his own remarkable comeback. Cooper was in 7th place with 150m to go. He stayed calm, executed his race plan, and closed in a blistering 12.48 seconds over the final 100m, surging into second and nearly catching Donovan Brazier at the finish line. This was a performance that defied age, experience, and expectations, and announced Cooper as the future of American middle distance running. In this episode, we get into it and try to answer the main question: how did this happen and who is Cooper? It wasn't just a great race for a high schooler; it was a great race, period._____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Cooper Lutkenhaus | @cooper.lutkenhaus on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on InstagramMentioned in this episode…Watch: USATF Championships Men's 800m final_____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Straight out of Bikini Bottom, Olipop's limited edition SpongeBob cans have arrived. “The biggest mindset coming off of Paris was that because I had made the biggest final there is, it was a message to me that no matter who's on the track, you deserve a lane. I belong here and I've proven myself. That message was definitely something that I carried into my senior year: just knowing that I belong here. That was very powerful for me.”My guest for today's episode is Savannah Sutherland, a 21 year old Canadian hurdler who just made history in more ways than one, hailing from Borden, Saskatchewan. Savannah was named a finalist for the Bowerman, which is the highest honor in NCAA track and field, awarded annually to the most outstanding collegiate athletes in the sport. She's the first Canadian female track athlete to ever reach the finalist status. I recently made an appearance on the CBC's Trackside show where I revealed that as a Bowerman voter, I already casted my vote. Savannah was ranked #1 for me.She put together a jaw-dropping season at Michigan. She didn't just win her second NCAA title in the 400m hurdles, but she obliterated the NCAA record too with a time of 52.46 seconds, becoming the second woman in NCAA history to go under 53 seconds. The record that she broke previously belonged to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.Savannah broke her own Canadian record, climbed to the 9th fastest of all time, and last year she even took 7th place in the Olympic final in Paris. In this episode, we chat about how she got so good at this event, her hopes and expectations for this summer's World Championships in Tokyo, and so much more.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Savannah Sutherland | @sav.sutherland on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Straight out of Bikini Bottom, Olipop's limited edition SpongeBob cans have arrived. Emily Infeld After Winning Her First National Title At 35 Years Old | LIVE from Eugene

Emily Infeld is one of those runners you can't help but root for. The gritty but unflappably kind veteran of the sport has been kicking around USAs since 2010, and though she's had plenty of success along the way, including winning World bronze in 2015 and making the Rio Olympic team, she's never won a national title on the track — before yesterday. In recent years, Infeld has been defined by a series of injuries and coaching changes, leaving Bowerman Track Club in 2022 and shifting sponsors to Brooks. She made her most recent World team in 2022 but struggled at last year's Olympic Trials, finishing sixteenth in the 5000m, and generally speaking, a performance like that from a then-34-year-old at the end of an Olympic cycle tends to lead to retirement announcements. But Infeld is no quitter, and her race performance — a 31:43.56 10,000m victory outkicking 2023 champ Elise Cranny — showed her grit more than anything else.Hosts: Chris Chavez & Aisha Praught-LeerGuest: Emily InfeldProduced by: Mac Fleet & Jasmine Fehr__________Find everything you need to know about the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships here:Listen: Day 1 Recap ShowSubscribe: CITIUS MAG NewsletterRead: Distance preview | Sprints + hurdles preview | Throws + heptathlon preview | Jumps + decathlon preview__________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. The first day of USAs delivered a little bit of everything regardless of your taste, showcasing track's shortest and longest events a few hours apart as reigning World champions Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson cruised through the 100m prelims and two first-time champions were crowned in the 10,000m.The stakes weren't exactly high in in the opening rounds of the 800m, where six of the eight entrants in each heat were guaranteed a spot in the semifinal, but nevertheless all eyes were on 2021 Olympic champ Athing Mu-Nikolayev as she races her way back into national contention following a devastating fall in the final of last year's Trials. So far, so good as Mu-Nikolayev picked up a heat win in a season's best 2:00.06… but the job gets harder from here, with competitors like Sage Hurta-Klecker, Addy Wiley, Ajee' Wilson, and defending champ Nia Akins looking strong. The 10,000m finals weren't blazing fast at first — they rarely are — but their conclusions were as dramatic as racing gets. Two first-time national champions were crowned, but their stories couldn't be more different: For Nico Young, it was the ascendance of a 23-year-old wunderkind who's done little but thrive since turning pro last summer. He took down reigning champ and Olympic bronze medalist Grant Fisher thanks to a 3:57.03 final 1600m and a 27-second final 200m. For Emily Infeld, however, her victory served as long-awaited just desserts for the 35-year-old workhorse who medaled in the event a decade ago, when Young was in middle school. While there were few surprises in the prelims, the outcomes in the finals were certainly unexpected. Let that be a reminder as you tune in and follow along over the next few days that anything can — and will — happen.__________Find everything you need to know about the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships here:Subscribe: CITIUS MAG NewsletterRead: Distance previewRead: Sprints + hurdles previewRead: Throws + heptathlon previewRead: Jumps + decathlon preview__________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. The Running Ground: The Atlantic CEO Nick Thompson On Life, Legacy, and the Simplest of Sports

“My view on running is that it's the simplest sport — but the fact of that simplicity opens up the possibility that if you think about it deeply and use it deeply in your life, it can be a tool to help you understand the really important and complicated stuff.”By day, Nick Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic shaping the future of journalism. By early morning and often late evening, he's pounding the pavement between his Brooklyn home and Manhattan office, logging miles that many of us would consider as workouts. But somehow at age 49, he's still getting faster. In 2021, Nick ran a 2:29 marathon. At 45, he broke the American age group record in the 50K. Now he's the author of “The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of Sports.” It's a book that's part memoir, part meditation on how running shapes us, challenges us, and sometimes reveals more than we're ready to face. It's out this fall.In this conversation, Nick opens up about growing up in the shadow of a gifted but troubled father, about breaking free from a years-long plateau in his running, and how sport has helped him find meaning both on and off the track. For Nick, running has never just been about the finish line or breaking records. It's about understanding who we are and who we want to be, which sometimes we learn in the process. We recorded this in April, so there may be a few references to the Boston Marathon which Nick was slated to run as part of Puma's Project 3 but had to withdraw from the race due to a family matter.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Nick Thompson | @nxthompson on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on InstagramMentioned in this episode…Pre-order: The Running Ground: A Father, a Son, and the Simplest of SportsWatch: The Running Ground: Nick Thompson On Life, Legacy and the Simplest of SportsSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “I'd been working so hard for this and had so much conscious energy going into winning this title and putting it all out there — my last attempt, last ditch effort. We've got to just win this thing. You could see it after in the photos. I was almost crying. I was so relieved, so happy, and so proud of the work that I've done.”My guest for today's episode is Nathan Green. In one of the most tactical and tightly contested NCAA 1500m finals in recent memory, Nathan Green emerged with more than just a lean at the finish line; he walked away with his second NCAA title, and perhaps more meaningfully, cemented Washington's 1500m legacy as one of the most dominant in NCAA history. He closed in 51.46 seconds to edge out UNC's Ethan Strand. In a blanket finish that saw 11 of the top 12 finishers within less than a second of each other, it was the kind of race that required patience, poise, and a final lap gear that few possess — and Green had it all to pull it off.But this wasn't just another tactical win. This was also a passing of the torch moment. Joe Waskom and Luke Houser have moved on to the professional ranks — and Nathan, who calls him his older brothers, carried the legacy forward. With this win, Washington becomes the first school to win six of the last seven NCAA 1500m and mile titles — a stretch powered by three athletes who have each won two. That's Joe Waskom, Luke Houser, and now Nathan Green.Today, we talk with Nathan about what this title means to him, the pressure and pride of carrying the UW streak forward, how he nearly dove at the finish line, whether or not his coach actually yelled, ‘jump,' and what's next as he turns pro and stays in Seattle under coach Andy Powell.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Nathan Green | @nathanrgreen on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. Grand Slam Track has canceled its upcoming meet in Los Angeles, which was set to take place June 28th and 29th at UCLA's Drake Stadium, and be the final competition of the inaugural season. The league is still planning to return in 2026 for a second season. Several athletes who have signed onto the league are on multi-year deals, according to sources close to the league. In its first season, the league featured six event groups and planned to award $12.6 million in prize money. Winners of each Slam take home $100,000. The league made in-season changes by pivoting to a two-day model for Philadelphia. (Long distance group winners were awarded $50,000, since one of those changes was the removal of the 5000m from the schedule.)The league is planning to announce new investors and partners in the coming weeks. Grand Slam Track ends its inaugural season after three meets in Kingston, Jamaica (April 4-6), Miami, Florida (May 2-4) and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (May 31-June 1).Watch the episode here | Follow The Final Leg hereSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “A lot of people when they go out and do things [after an injury] have this vengeance. It's always like, ‘I'm doing it for the people who counted me out,' or ‘I'm doing it for revenge.' But I'm doing it for the people who say I can do it because I have such an overwhelming amount of people who have been supportive and have known I can come back. It's so cool to prove them right.”It's not every day that an athlete disappears from racing for nearly three years—undergoes multiple surgeries, leaves their training group, and then returns to the track to drop a 1:44 in their first 800m back. But that's exactly what Donavan Brazier just did.The former world champion, American record holder, and longtime face of U.S. middle-distance running made a stunning comeback in Nashville this past weekend—not just running well, but dominating the field and flashing the brilliance that once made him one of the most electrifying athletes in the sport. If you've followed Donavan's career, you know the road back has been anything but easy. He's battled injuries, Achilles surgeries, a fractured tibia, bursitis—over 1,000 days without stepping onto a start line. He could have walked away. No one would have blamed him. But he didn't.Today, we dive into why. What kept him going? What was it like to toe the line again? And how does he see himself fitting into the most competitive U.S. 800m field in years? We reflect on the highs, the lows, the what-ifs and look ahead at what's next for both Donavan and the event he helped redefine. What Does The House v. NCAA Settlement Mean For The Future Of Track and Field + Cross Country (With Russell Dinkins)

“There is a pretty significant amount of track and field athletes for whom a college opportunity will only come through the participation of track and field. That is something we need to really educate the public around. Coining the term, ‘the opportunity sport,' encapsulates all of that. It's something I believe the broader public can get understanding around.”Starting July 1, NCAA Division I schools can directly pay athletes for the first time ever. This shift follows the House v. NCAA antitrust settlement, approved last week by Judge Claudia Wilken. The $2.8B deal doesn't make athletes employees, but it does allow them to finally receive a share of the billions in revenue they help generate. Schools will be able to offer up to $20.5M annually to student-athletes across all sports (amounts not required to be equal). It also tightens oversight of NIL collectives via a new clearinghouse that ensures deals are “fair-market value.” After major pushback over lost roster spots, the final version protects current and incoming athletes, though schools aren't required to restore those spots. Now, athletic departments are racing to implement these changes. Some are lobbying Congress for federal regulation, hoping this deal becomes a stepping stone toward nationwide legislation. Either way, college sports — and particularly cross country and track — will never look the same.Mentioned in this episode…Read: Track Is America's Opportunity Sport. “When I saw the time, I was like, ‘I did that. We are back. I'm me again…' It felt so good to be like, ‘I'm back and doing things as good as I know how to do them, which I haven't done in a while. It felt really good!”My guest for today's episode is one of the most electrifying athletes in track and field right now: Anna Hall. The two-time decathlon Olympic champion Ashton Eaton went as far as to say that she might be one of the best athletes on earth right now.Just days after winning the Hypomeeting in Götzis with 7,032 points, Hall now sits second on the all-time heptathlon list, tied with Carolina Kluft and trailing only her mentor, the great Jackie Joyner-Kersee. That mark was achieved with four personal bests, including a gutsy 2:01 in the 800m – a reminder that the final event of the heptathlon was more than a win. It was a comeback statement after last summer's heartbreaking fifth place finish at the Paris Olympics. In this conversation, Anna opens up about the emotional weight of that Olympic result, the rehab process after knee surgery, and how this performance in Austria healed her. We also talk about what it means to chase a legend and have such a close connection with someone like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the mental and physical toll of the heptathlon, and what's next as she eyes a potential world title this fall. She's looking to become just the second American to win gold in the heptathlon after Jackie Joyner-Kersee won in 1987 and 1993. Anna is the kind of athlete who competes with heart, guts, and joy.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Anna Hall | @annaa.hall on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. This week, Chris Chavez and Megan Connelly unpack the new U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifying Standards. Preet Majithia hops on for the second half to recap Grand Slam Track: Philadelpia, Anna Hall's breakthrough heptathlon, preview the Rome Diamond League, and more takeaways from the past week.Takeaways from the new U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifying Standards:– USATF will return to “A” and “B” standards for 2028. The “A” standard will be determined at a later date in coordination with the LOC. Athletes with the “A” standard will get travel funding to the Olympic Trials. Athletes with the “B” standard will be guaranteed entry to the Olympic Trials.– For the “B” standard: Women who want to race will have to run 2:37:00 or faster. This is the same as the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard. Women will also be able to qualify if they run 1:12:00 for the half marathon or faster, which is the same as the 2024 qualifier.– For the “B” standard: Men who want to race will have to run 2:16:00 or faster. This is two minutes faster than the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard. Men can also enter if they run 1:03:00 or faster for the half marathon, which is the same as the 2024 qualifier. Going off USATF's 2024 qualifiers list, 139 of the 220 qualified men ran faster than 2:16:00.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Megan Connelly | @meganmorantwwe on Instagram Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. “I'm patient. I call it aggressively patient. I'm going hard for it all — but if it doesn't happen, there's still a process and I chip away for next time. That's how you become a champion. You don't just go out there and run and win. You have to have a journey and work hard. I'm always going hard.”Welcome back to Office Hours on the CITIUS MAG Podcast, where we explore the philosophy of the coaches who push the edges of human potential with some of the best athletes in track and field.Today's guest is someone who has climbed to some of the highest highs in the sport. Joanna Hayes is an Olympic gold medalist, a Hall of Famer, and currently the director of track and field and cross country at her alma mater UCLA. In 2024, she was named USATF's Coach of the Year — a recognition not just for her competitive pedigree, but her ability to cultivate greatness in others. She's coached legends like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin, ushered in record-breaking seasons at both USC and UCLA, and she's done it all while remaining grounded in values of respect, discipline, family, and joy. In this conversation, we explore what success does and doesn't change about how she leads, what it feels like to return to the place where it all started, the realities of coaching both elite professionals and college athletes and how the two are more connected than you think. We talk about legacy, resilience, motherhood, and what it means to show up not just as a coach, but as a human being who makes space for culture, connection, and yes, sometimes TikToks and fresh fits. Coach Hayes's story is one of full circle moments and forward motion. She's creating a new chapter at UCLA and you'll hear in this conversation why it's one worth watching and rooting for. “I think it's really important to celebrate the intermediate steps along the way because if you're only thinking about the highest level of the NCAA…it gets overwhelming. You have to have those goals along the way.”We're back with more Office Hours episodes. My guest today is someone that's become synonymous with Hoya distance running — Brandon Bonsey, the head men's cross country coach and longtime leader of Georgetown's storied middle-distance program. He's more than a decade into his coaching career on the Hilltop — Bonsey has guided the Hoyas to dozens of All-America honors, multiple Big East titles, and a steady presence at the national level across cross country and track. A proud alum himself, Bonsey competed for Georgetown from 2004 to 2009, and since returning to his alma mater, he's played a pivotal role in both honoring the program's legacy and evolving it for today's generation. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to coach at the place that shaped you, what he learned from mentors like Pat Henner and Chris Fox, and how he's helping develop two of the most exciting young middle-distance talents in the country — Tinoda Matsatsa and Abel Teffra. We also get into recruiting at a high-academic institution, what sets the Georgetown culture apart, and how Bonsey blends emotional investment with long-view composure as a coach. This is a great one for anyone who loves hearing how tradition meets innovation in today's NCAA coaching landscape.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Brandon Bonsey | @thebonz21 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. The 21-year-old who kicked his way to Olympic bronze in the 800 meters — running 1:42.93, still the fifth-fastest time by an American in history.Over the years, Clayton's worn the red, white, and blue across the globe — from the Pan Am Games, where he struck gold, to two Olympic Games, multiple U.S. titles, and countless memorable finishes. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. He's battled injuries, coaching changes, and the highs and lows that come with being one of the best in a brutal event. And now, after a career that spanned over a decade at the professional level — Clayton is here to reflect on what it meant, how he made peace with the decision, and what's next.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for. That's a lot of how I approached Boston.”After finishing one spot off of the Team USA squads in the marathon and the 10,000m for the Olympics and the half marathon for the World Road Running Championships, Jess McLain has made it a habit of being so close, yet just off of these national teams. But on Patriots Day in Boston, she kicked it open, running a smart, gutsy race that saw her surge through the Newton Hills strategically with Emma Bates and Sara Hall chasing a lead pack and then closing in 5:15 seconds for the final mile. Jess cemented her place as one of the top contenders in American distance running. In today's conversation, we get into what changed with this particular marathon build, from training under coach David Roche to how she's getting used to these major marathon scenes. We talk a lot about the importance of carbs and how that's also been a game changer for her as well as why her drive to compete instead of focusing on times works so well. With big goals on the horizon and the 2028 Olympic cycle now underway, Jess McClain might just be getting started and really coming into her own as a marathoner.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Jess McClain | @jesstonn on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “When you're in that momentum phase, every week is just exciting. You look forward to the next workout because you're just curious – I did well last week, let's see how well I can do this week. It's just fun to see everything come together at the right time. That's what Boston was. I was just excited because I knew how much fitness I had gained in the last month. It was really just going out there and seeing what I had.”Sometimes the best breakthroughs don't come after a perfect buildup — they come from trusting your gut, leaning into the tough days and racing fearlessly when it matters most. That's exactly what Annie Frisbie did at the 2025 Boston Marathon.Running through a rocky buildup that started with an upper hamstring tear, Annie put herself right in the mix early on, going out aggressively with the lead pack and refusing to back down when the race got tough. She crossed the line in 2:23:21, nearly a three-minute personal best and the eighth-fastest Boston finish ever by an American woman. It's a huge step forward for the Minnesota Distance Elite athlete, who first turned heads with a 2:26 debut at the 2021 New York City Marathon and has steadily — and quietly — been building toward a moment like this ever since.Today, Annie joins me to talk about the full story behind her Boston breakthrough — the injury recovery, the confidence building, the decision to go with the leaders early — and why this is just the beginning.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Annie Frisbie | @anniefrisb3 on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I just like being an underdog. It has this feeling that almost reduces the pressure… I'm not going to change anything, but I'm going to try and go out there and show everyone that I can do it. That it's possible.”In a race built on tradition, it takes something truly special to rewrite history, and that's exactly what Sharon Lokedi delivered at the 2025 Boston Marathon. Facing off once again with Hellen Obiri, the two-time defending champion and the Olympic bronze medalist, Lokedi flipped the script. When Obiri made a move with about one mile to go, Sharon just didn't hang on; she countered with a decisive surge of her own, and the result was a 2:17:22 victory – the fastest Boston Marathon ever run by a woman, smashing the old course record by more than 2.5 minutes. It was a win built on boldness.Lokedi stayed composed through an aggressive early pace, answered every challenge and move along the way, and delivered a ferocious negative split. In the process, she claimed her place in history not just as a champion, but as a new standard bearer for women's marathoning in Boston.Today, Sharon joins me to talk about the race that had her questioning the pace the whole entire way, her rivalry with Hellen Obiri, and how belief, guts, and a little bit of joy carried her all the way to the finish line into the arms of her mother on Boylston Street.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Sharon Lokedi | @shazrine on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “Whether it's true or not, that's what I've got to believe. That's the faith I've got to have moving forward. Regardless of what other people say, or what other people think, there is power in truth and being honest with myself. There's got to be faith and there's got to be belief that I not only can close that gap, but that I am in that tier and I can compete with the best.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Young. While Conner Mantz's 2:05 may have stolen the headlines, Clayton Young once again proved why he belongs in any conversation about the best marathoners in America. On a competitive day in Boston, he ran 2:0:7:04 – nearly a full minute personal best to finish seventh overall, tying his highest ever finish at a World Marathon Major. He did it despite a calf cramp at mile 20 and on an up and down lead up that included some frustrating half marathon results. But that's the kind of thing about Clayton's success, quiet consistency, big stage composure, and a resilience that keeps him right alongside the best, including his training partner and Olympic teammate, Conner Mantz. This Boston result marks their fourth straight marathon finishing as the top two Americans in every field, and every time Clayton Young shows up.In this conversation, we get into the Boston Marathon as it unfolded, what was actually going through his head when that mile 20 move got made, when that cramp hit, and why he's so good at staying in the mix.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Clayton Young | @_clayton_young_ on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “It became, ‘No, I'm attacking this marathon.' It was more of an assertive mentality. Hearing the crowds roar, I was fighting for the podium… It was like, ‘This is it.' I'm doing what I set out to do and I feel great.' It was a very special moment. I was pretty zoned in, but I enjoyed it and I'd love to live through it again.”On a brisk April morning in Boston, Conner Mantz delivered the marathon breakthrough that he's been waiting for. Running fearlessly from the front, Mantz surged through the Newton Hills, hung with a deep pack through about 40 kilometers, and stopped the clock in 2:05:08 seconds — a massive personal best and the second-fastest time ever run by an American. Boston is not a record eligible course, but this was a major performance. He finished fourth overall and just four seconds off the podium in one of the fastest editions in Boston Marathon history. It was a performance that firmly placed Mantz among the world's elite, showing he's not just America's top distance talent, but he's now a serious contender at the sport's highest level too. This came just months after breaking the American record in the half marathon in Houston and just weeks after backing that up with a 59:15 in New York. It's been a big year and it's only April. In today's episode, Conner and I talked through that Boston effort from studying past races, to covering all the big moves, to racing for time and place. That's what motivates me and makes me want to toe the line on race day and see what happens.”My guest for today's episode is Clayton Young. It should come as no surprise that this episode pairs well with last week's interview with Conner Mantz because since fall 2023, he's lined up alongside Conner in nearly every major race from Chicago to the Olympic Trials, Paris to New York, and most recently, in Houston back in January. While the spotlight often lands on Conner Mantz, it's impossible to overlook what Clayton has done: second at the Trials, ninth at the Olympics, seventh in New York City, and a personal best of 60:52 in Houston earlier this year for the half marathon. He's always been in the mix – always one move, one moment away from turning the tables. In today's conversation, Clayton reflects on the highs and lows of this particular training block, how he's managed to regain his confidence late in the build, and how he's approaching his Boston Marathon debut this upcoming Monday.Since he started representing himself, he also shares a bit of how he's making a bet on himself and how he went about structuring his contract for the race. It also wouldn't be fair if I didn't ask him what he thought his chances were of winning on race day. This episode talks about competition, belief, and the challenge of chasing your best when you're already running with the best every day in training.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Clayton Young | @_clayton_young_ on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “The part I also really love is finding the edges: How do we pursue the elite edge of world-class performance? I think as I've gotten further, that part is exciting me more and more as we go on here. But it doesn't have to just be world- class – how do you get people to find out how good they can really be?”When Chris Miltenberg took the helm at North Carolina in 2019, the Tar Heels distance programs had not won an ACC cross country title since before most of his current athletes were born. Fast forward to today and under Miltenberg's leadership, UNC has not only climbed back to the top of the ACC podium in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track, but they've reestablished themselves as a legitimate national contender too.Miltenberg has led UNC to top ten finishes at the NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships, he's coached Parker Wolfe to UNC's first-ever 5000m outdoor national title, signed the program's highest ranked recruiting class, and has built a culture of buy-in, belief, and bold ambition. Most recently, he's coming off an indoor season where Ethan Strand broke the collegiate records in the 3000m and mile before taking the NCAA title. Makayla Paige won the women's 800m to become the Tar Heels' first women's NCAA champion since 2018.But this isn't just a North Carolina story; Miltenberg's impact has been felt at every stop. At Stanford, he led the Cardinals to a top five program of the year finish and coached national champions like Grant Fisher, Sean McGorty, and Elise Cranny. At Georgetown, he guided the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country title with the team that was led by Emily Infeld. In today's conversation, we talk about how he's building something sustainable in Chapel Hill, his approach to culture, and what it takes to coach through transitions, setbacks, and expectations. We also dig into athlete development, milestone moments, and why being present is one of the most underrated skills a coach can have.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris Miltenberg | @chris.miltenberg on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I think I'm a guy who can win these races on the right day. I just need to prove that. I think the way to prove that, at least to myself, is to finish in the top three… I'd rather focus on getting on the podium in some of these races."Welcome back Conner Mantz to the CITIUS MAG Podcast for his 9th career appearance on the show. He's back ahead of his return to the 2025 Boston Marathon and he's bringing some serious momentum with him. In the past year alone, Mantz has shattered the American half marathon record in Houston, backed it up with another 57:15 performance at the NYC Half, which is a non-record eligible course, yet quite the performance. He's continued his streak of finishing as the top American in every major marathon since the fall of 2023.We talk about what's different this time around in Boston after his 11th place finish there in 2023, what he's learned from racing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's best, and what he takes from another upcoming race with Clayton Young. We also go through some of the top contenders in the field and Conner expresses his thoughts on who's got a shot of winning and what he's taken away from each of those competitors. We explore where his mindset is heading into Patriots Day 2025 – a day that could crown the next American to break through on Boston's legendary course. It's officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K.  So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. How I Built This: Bandit Running Co-Founder & CEO Nick West

In the fall of 2020, while much of the world was still stuck inside wondering when things might go back to normal, Tim West was lacing up his racing shoes, logging miles, and building something new – not a tech startup, not an app, but a running brand, out of his basement. He quickly recruited his brother Nick on his vision. They didn't spend money on big splashy ads or influencer campaigns. Instead, they listened, they ran, and they asked questions. They built gear starting with socks that runners actually wanted. Over the next few years, what started as a side project for the two brothers and their designer turned co-founder Ardith  Singh, grew into one of the most exciting new names in running: Bandit Running – a Brooklyn-based company that makes premium performance apparel and centers community at the heart of everything it does. But Nick West didn't come from the fashion world. Him and his brother Tim were working in e-commerce at Jet.com. They grew up immersed in the New Jersey skate and surf scene where the coolest brands weren't built in boardrooms. They were built by friends on the street and from the ground up. That ethos is what stuck with them.Today, Bandit makes everything from race day singlets to streetwear inspired track pants. They host events that pack the sidewalks of New York. They've launched the unsponsored project celebrating professional runners who don't get the financial support from the major shoe brands and they're building a brand-first model that doesn't just sell apparel; it tells stories. So how did a couple of brothers go from zero marketing budget to a brand that's evolving what running looks and feels like? That's what we find out in this episode. It's 10 a.m. in Brooklyn and Nick West is refreshing his phone again and again. We're sitting in the Bandit Running headquarters. The coffee's still hot, and the 2025 spring collection, nearly a year in the making, is officially live to the public. This drop: It's the result of 11 months of long days, late nights, and that's just how those days go.On a previous drop, there was even a 2:30 a.m. production shoot involving a whiteboard, an iPhone, and Nick himself modeling shorts that he didn't expect to be in. These are the kind of stories that don't make the product page on the website, but at Bandit, they're kind of the point because this isn't just an apparel company. In this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Nick West joins me on how he and his team built Bandit Running, a company rooted in connection, performance, and that little bit of rebellion that every runner knows by heart. It's a brand built by runners, forerunners, driven by storytelling, community, and the belief that there's a better way to build a business in this space.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Nick West | @nicholas_west on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Stepping away from college and taking this really windy journey to where I am now, I've been able to work with all different levels of athletes and it's been equally rewarding to those who run their first mile without stopping all the way to the world stage. It's been a non-conventional path, but I've been loving it.”My guest for today's episode is someone who's seen—and shaped—American middle-distance running from just about every angle. She coached Jenny Simpson to her gold medal at the 2011 World Championships. She guided Kevin Sullivan back to the global stage. And today, she's the coach behind Nikki Hiltz, helping them chase a 2028 Olympic dream of their own.In this episode, we get into it all: – What makes Nikki tick and how their partnership is evolving – The differences between coaching NCAA athletes vs. pros – How Juli learned to balance intensity with recovery—the hard way – Her reflections on being a woman in the coaching world before there were many to look up to – And what it's like now to see coaches like Shalane Flanagan, Diljeet Taylor, and Laurie Henes rise to national prominenceWe also talk about Juli's time at Air Force, the unique challenges of coaching across every level of the sport, and what it's meant to mentor everyone from Olympic finalists to first-time runners. This is a conversation about resilience, evolution, and quiet excellence—and it's one of my favorite coaching deep-dives we've done yet.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Juli Benson | julibensontraining.comSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Let's go back a couple of years. It's 2017 and Ali Feller is a writer, runner, self-described talker, and she's sitting in her living room in her house with a microphone, an idea, and a whole lot of enthusiasm. She doesn't have a fancy studio, a producer, and any guarantees that anyone is going to listen. What she does have is a belief that runners, pros, weekend warriors, and people chasing something big have stories that deserve to be told. So she starts talking, listening, and asking really good questions.Today, the Ali On The Run Show is the biggest running podcast in America. It's downloaded millions of times a year. It's where elite marathoners, Olympians, and everyday runners come to share their journeys – whether they're chasing gold medals, breaking barriers, or just figuring out how to balance running with the rest of their lives. At the center of it all, this endlessly curious, deeply passionate, and incredibly warm person has built not just a podcast, but a community. But Ali's story isn't just about the show and the podcast; it's about resilience. It's about saying yes, even when it's scary. It's about navigating Crohn's disease, pregnancy, motherhood, and most recently, a breast cancer diagnosis, all while showing up, microphone in hand, ready to tell the next great story. Through it all, she's been a race announcer, a marathoner, a friend to just about everyone in the running world, and somehow the nicest person in America. So how did she do it? How did Ali go from a kid who loved dancing to magazine editor to podcaster with sell-out live shows, an engaged audience, and a voice that runners turn to every single week? “My mentality is if I'm going through that high mileage and adding that stress in, I don't want to also have to worry about workouts and putting my body in a hole where I can't recover for a week or two down the road. I think that's very different than how a lot of other people approach training, but for me it's been working.”For the first time in over 30 years, an American man has won the Los Angeles Marathon. On Sunday, Matt Richtman stamped his name in the history books, breaking the tape in 2:07:56—a massive personal best and a statement win in only his second marathon. The 25-year-old ASICS athlete didn't just claim victory; he dominated, pulling away from a world-class field with a decisive move that turned the streets of LA into his own personal proving ground. The performance did have so many people scratching their heads thinking: “Who?” I am here to answer all of those questions.Today, we sit down with Matt to break it all down:– The moment he knew he could win—and the fearless move that sealed it– Why he had no set plan going in but let instinct take over– What's next after a 2:07 breakthrough in just his second marathon– Why his training on Strava doesn't make sense but maybe after he explains it - it makes a bit more sense– Why he's got a traditional and old-school approach to training– And how it feels to be part of the next generation pushing U.S. marathoning forwardThis episode is for anyone who loves the thrill of a bold race and the promise of what's to come.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Matthew Richtman | @richtman13 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine.
