Noah Gedrimas, Vice President of Strategy at GPR, discusses developing and adopting autonomous vehicles, focusing on their various applications in industries such as seaports, mining, and agriculture. He highlights the need for a better understanding of how these vehicles operate and the trust that needs to be built in the technology. A $2.5M grant from NASA will expand a STEM program at Fairmont State. And check out the incentives for filming in #YesWV… on today's daily304. #1 – From T-MOBILE – During a recent press event, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and T-Mobile executive Edwige Robinson, highlighted the impact of a $200 million investment from T-Mobile in the Mountain State. The investment has had a striking impact on the citizens and businesses of West Virginia. One recent study showed a 66 percent increase in median download speeds in West Virginia from 2022 to 2023 alone.  Through a merger with Sprint in 2020, T-Mobile has made a massive commitment to improve Internet connectivity and mobile service for rural and small-town America. In 2021, T-Mobile doubled down on its commitment to West Virginia when it finalized its acquisition of Shentel Wireless, one of the primary mobile service providers in West Virginia.  Since then, the Un-carrier has invested an additional $200 million to upgrade 5G service via 377 new towers and upgrades to 121 existing towers. This award was a renewal of the grant for the operation of the ERC. The ERC started 20 years ago with one worker. The program now includes four full-time employees, a college intern and four AmeriCorps members, Fairmont State Professor Dr. Deb Hemler said. Over time, the program's focus has shifted from teachers to the students, with an emphasis on First Lego League and VEX Robotics competitions. Hemler said the program plans to expand to drone competitions next. The ERC also operates a loan-and-learn kit program for regional STEM classrooms. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Dec. 14  A new food truck is dishing up gourmet egg rolls with unique ingredients. What's rarer than catching a monster trout? That same monster trout was caught two years in a row. And robotics students prepare to converge on a Triadelphia arena next month…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY-TV – When you think of egg rolls, you probably think of the free side dish you get with a Chinese take-out meal, but there's a food truck where egg rolls come in more than 100 varieties and are served up as the main course. “Everything tastes better in an egg roll wrapper,” said Anthony Pierce, owner-operator of the Rollie Pollie Egg Roll Factory, a food truck serving northeast West Virginia as well as parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Pierce, a former executive chef, runs the food truck with his wife, Megan. The couple has developed 110 recipes for fillings—everything from the gourmet (filet mignon and lobster tail) to simple comfort foods (pepperoni rolls and pierogies). “That's the trick is to get everyone to not think of it as an egg roll,” said Pierce. “We get questions like ‘is there cabbage in all of them or is there eggs in all of them?' For the contest, six monster trout, weighing between 3-6 pounds, were tagged. Anglers who caught one of the tagged fish won either a weekend cabin stay at a West Virginia State Park or a Cabela's prize package. When Young questioned the WVDNR about the trout, they said that his fish was tagged as part of the 2022 Monster Trout Contest, which is actually pretty rare. Trout that are stocked are meant to be fished out within a year of their release and rarely last for a long time in the wild. Anthony Creek, where Young caught the monster trout, is stocked regularly and was even stocked the day he caught the 2022 fish. He also said he fishes there regularly and has never caught a tagged fish before. The WVDNR said that this story is proof that just because your favorite trout fishing spot feels “fished out” doesn't mean that you can't still get the catch of a lifetime. Preparations are happening now for the “Gateway To The West” regional tournament in Ohio County, selected by VEX Robotics as a site for one of 26 “signature events” where competitors may qualify for the world championships.  Eighty middle school teams and an additional 80 high school teams are expected to attend the four-day robotics competition, according to JoJo Shay, innovation coordinator for Ohio County Schools.  The last two years have seen Ohio County robotics teams win the West Virginia robotics championship and automatically qualify for the world championships. “The community has supported this program over the years,” Shay said. “Now we're excited to have this event to allow students who don't get to go to worlds experience a signature event. This will also bring people to the area and help us celebrate the area. As a child, I didn't think I was a “math and science” person. But you know what I did like? Robots. Robotics would have been an easy inroad into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) practices that would have piqued my interest in a way the regular school curriculum didn't. If I'd been able to experiment with robotics in school, I might have unlocked an entirely new passion apart from the reading/writing skills I was far more comfortable with. I might have begun to see myself as a person who could take an active role in experimentation, problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership. While most of us as educators didn't get the opportunity to experience robotics and STEM projects when we were kids, we do have the opportunity to have fun experimenting with these challenges NOW alongside students. In fact, being brand new to the ideas can help you practice being a fellow learner with kids and experience the joy of making new discoveries together. He's sharing how exposing kids to STEM opportunities can change the way they think about themselves and transform their engagement in school. Jason has over 20 years of classroom experience implementing STEM programs and robotics competitions for students at all levels. The Create Award is presented to the team whose robot design incorporates a creative engineering solution to the challenges of this year's robot game. This team demonstrates a highly creative design process that incorporates solid mechanical ability, unique design solutions, and innovative approaches to the game play. The DAMS teams placed 8, 18, & 33 out of 40 teams in the competition! World Championships are held in Dallas, TX April 25-27, 2023. As education leaders around the globe call for more emphasis on STEM education, and as government statistics project millions more tech jobs than trained workers in the next decade, the REC Foundation is changing the way K–12 students learn about technology by making robotics both accessible and fun for students from every background, all over the world. REC Foundation has been helping K–12 schools start their own VEX Robotics education programs and participate in competitions since 2008 — and over 1 million students each year now participate in more than 70 countries, about three-quarters of those coming from the United States. The foundation is also devoted to changing the face of STEM, with programs designed to make robotics more equitable, such as the Girl Powered initiative launched in 2016. Six years later, half of all elementary school students participating in VEX Robotics teams are girls. Last year, REC Foundation added a drone program and competition in Texas, and this fall the drone competition program expanded to Maryland and Michigan — with more states expected to be added soon. Vex Robotics is an international robotics program for students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. They also host the world's largest robotics competitions, in which students around the globe can compete to design, build, program and drive robots to complete specific challenges. One Grade 12 student at WAB capitalized on his passion for robotics by helping to bring Vex into the school. It started as an extracurricular club, has grown into a competitive team, and will eventually find its place in the Design curriculum. "I think every kid should be exposed to robotics," Design Teacher and club supervisor Rob Langlands said. "When you come into one of those sessions, you're going to see kids collaborating. They're solving problems. They're doing math. They're doing science. There's so much going on, and it's really connected to every part of the curriculum." On today's episode of the podcast, we talk to Rob about the practical applications of the skills learned in robotics as well as his plans for the future of robotics at WAB. Anjalee Narenthiren is the speaker, Program Director at Startup Dojo, and host of the Youngpreneur podcast. The pandemic has spurred teachers like Amanda Hough to teach CAD remotely, but how do you do that if students don't have the hardware to run resource-heavy CAD software? Amanda uses cloud-based CAD platform OnShape, and her students run it in a web browser, no installs needed. She talks about her experience switching over to OnShape this year, its place in education even when the pandemic is over, and how she got into STEM education in the first place as a career-changed from marine biology. DTAC Wangaratta helps students across the region & beyond connect with STEM in a variety of ways! Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About DTAC Wangaratta The Digital Technologies Advisory Committee is a collection of organisations and individuals who are working hard to fix the problem our region is facing with Digital Inclusion. it started as a collaboration between the NE Tracks LLEN ( Local Learning and Employment Network), Local GOTAFE & Charles Sturt University. When DTAC commence in 2016, the local Digital Inclusion score was 43.8. In the most recent report they've shot past the 50% mark with a new scoring of 50.8 - an increase of 7%! (By comparison Melbourne moved from 62.5% to 63.6% in the same period). In Maree's words: We do our own teacher workshops, and now collaborations for regional workshops with DLTV ( Digital Learning & Teaching Victoria, STAV Science teachers association, MAV maths teachers association & OZgrav at Swinburne) Also a big focus is “girls in STEM” – we have had a number of these workshops including one of the coolest, where we have had FORD engineers travel to Wangaratta to work with our local girls. Last year with COVID put a bit of a halt on things, but we have created another partnership with One Giant Leap Australia Foundation, who have many cool space projects. The Kibo Challenge, seeds in space program – check out their website for more info. "The formation of DTAC has to sit high up there with creating change and innovation in our community. We would never had thought we would have achieved all this.  There has been so many wonderful outcomes." Further link www.DTAC.zone About Maree Timms Maree grew up in Wangaratta and attended Monash University, becoming a science teacher & started teaching in 1986 in a very multicultural school. At 25 years old she taught in Turkey for 10 months and then backpacked across a variety of countries during a 2.5 year period. She moved to the Northern Territory to teach at Taminmin College for 4 years followed by Gunbalanya Community School for 10 years in Arnhemland where she "learnt more than I ever taught!!". She returned to Wangaratta following this and has now been teaching at Galen Catholic College for past 14 years. In her words... I've had way too many cool things happen in my teaching career. Taking a group of students from Humpty Doo ( Taminmin College) to Open the National Science week way back in 1994's at Parliament house. Infront of Dr Karl Kruszelnickii!!  We created the Taminmin Magic Science Show! Taking a group of Indigenous kids ( Gunbalanya) to the Paralympic Games for the whole two weeks Taking a group of Indigenous Kids/parents and Elders ( Gunbalanya) to accept an award for a Claymation we created to Melbourne. I still don't know how to code…or build robots – but have taken teams to the highest level. I gather good allies/colleagues that have the skills I don't have and compliment mine. Kids who are willing to learn and have a go and teach themselves! They are the YouTube and online forum generation! I coordinate, facilitate, and “hammer' them on the communication, teamwork, organisation skills that helps to lead them to success. Javeria is a Digital Marketing Manager and has over seven years of experience in Information Technology field. She has been volunteering as a judge for VEX Robotics since 2016 and has participated as a lead champion for a coding group for children through Techpoint’s program called CoderDojo46038. She successfully ran this program for over a year. She also organized events at the Apple store, where kids learned how to code using Spheros and Swift. She was also provided an official letter of support and curriculum by Hopscotch app team. She was nominated as one of Indy’s Best and Brightest top ten finalists in technology for 2016. IBM Watson is her passion, she has been following the technology for over three years now and has worked with Watson Analytics and Blue Mix. She delivered presentations about IBM Watson in April, 2016 at Iron Yard Coding Academy and at Amegala Indy.Code() conference to introduce the audience about cognitive abilities of Watson. She is also the owner and founder of the first ever Artificial Intelligence Meetup in Indiana called Ready for AI. Today on Bytemarks Cafe, the winners from the VEX robotics championships will share what goes on behind the scenes of their robotics program. We'll also explore the diversity of learning experiences it provides, from engineering to public speaking.

VEX Robotics works with students from elementary school to college students by developing competition challenges across the world. Karthik believes it’s all about putting great tools in kids hands and giving them an exciting challenge which will inspire them to put down the distractions of video games and social media where they are building and learning about engineering, teamwork, and all sorts of great things. Karthik contributes robotics changed his viewpoint giving me an avenue for his competitive spirit in an educational realm, “being a part of the robotics competition is an exciting atmosphere where you wanted to succeed.” Robotics places you in real world situations with mentors, industry professionals, and how one can have a cool career. We need people that can think critically and solve the big problems on big issues such as climate change and affordable energy. According to Karthik the Urban Nexus theme consist of health, education, and environment; “we need to change education so we can solve problems such as health-related and environmental-related.“ Karthik states that some of the challenges are resources from financial, experience, and training.
