With six solo albums to her name, the singer, songwriter and producer boasts such an incredible music career that charts back to early recording sessions with the revered bass guitarist Michael Henderson, Was (Not Was) and Gene Dunlap. Should we boff on the Saber-tooth skull, or is Wooly Mammoth more your style? Paleontologist Trevor Valle is in Mexico doing fieldwork when he encounters Dawn, a blue eyed beauty who slowly warms to him. Hoping to impress his new girlfriend, he invites her to join him in the dinosaur lab late one night… If you've ever fantasized about sex on top of a priceless 37,000 year old fossil, this story's for you! #Direwolf #StrokeTheBone #Tattoos #MuseumAfterHours   This week's storyteller: Trevor Valle is a part-time field paleontologist who specializes in the recovery and preparation of fossils. You might have seen him on the History Channel, or maybe on NatGeo digging up mammoths in Siberia. After a stroke caused by a mass in his brain sidelined him in October, he moved onto his other passion, role-playing games, and plays D&D weekly online. He likes dead things, big dice, and never gets sick of puns about bones or scoring that critical hit.   Trevor was uninsured when he had his stroke, and could use your help. In this episode, Barney, Mark & Jasper invite legendary A&R man David Bates to tell them about his long & distinguished career in music — particularly the years he spent working at Phonogram with the likes of Tears For Fears, Def Leppard & Robert Plant. David reminisces about hearing the Beatles on the radio in 1962, and how that took him eventually to DJ'ing & to working at Richard Branson's first Virgin megastore in the '70s. A clip from our 1990 Was (Not Was) audio interview prompts recall of the droll duo & of David Geffen, after which our guest talks about the "torturous" process of overseeing Tears For Fears' eye-wateringly expensive Seeds Of Love album. He also recalls reuniting Robert Plant with Led Zep bandmate Jimmy Page for 1994's live No Quarter album. From there we segue into the week's new audio interview, which features Julian Cope — frontman with David's first major Phonogram signing the Teardrop Explodes — talking to a roomful of French music journalists about 1991's Peggy Suicide album. Two clips from this highly entertaining press conference prompt memories of the inimitable "Saint Julian" from our guest, who also joins in with the RBP team's tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, God rest his beard. Mark concludes the episode with quotes from his favourite library additions over the past fortnight, including pieces about Joe South and Earth, Wind & Fire, and Barney & Jasper respond with remarks on interviews with Seth Lakeman and Christina Aguilera. Dave McMurray has taken a long, strange trip to arrive at his sophomore release for Blue Note Records. On Grateful Deadication, the saxophonist takes his gritty, soulful Detroit sound and reimagines the flower empowered songs of San Francisco icons the Grateful Dead with an album as vibrant as it is unexpected. For this spirited excursion into the Dead's vast repertoire, McMurray reconvened the rhythm section that graced his 2018 Blue Note debut, Music Is Life. This time out, bassist Ibrahim Jones and drummer Jeff Canady are joined by guitarist Wayne Gerard and keyboardist Maurice O'Neal, both longtime compatriots from the Motor City scene, as well as pianist Luis Resto and percussionist Larry Fratangelo, colleagues from McMurray's days in Was (Not Was). The album also features a special guest appearance by Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir, along with powerhouse vocalist Bettye LaVette and Weir's Wolf Bros bandmates Don Was, Jay Lane, Jeff Chimenti and Greg Leisz, for a transcendent version of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's “Loser.”During the heyday of the Dead's tireless touring, McMurray was on the road himself, joining now-Blue Note president Don Wasin the uncategorizable Was (Not Was) beginning in 1981. McMurray has performed with a stunning roster of legendary musicians, including B.B. King, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Hallyday, Gladys Knight, Albert King, Nancy Wilson, KEM, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Hancock, Geri Allen and Bob James. In 2018 McMurray joined Don Was for an all-star set at San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. The performance featured a surprise appearance by Weir, who had recently enlisted Was and drummer Jay Lane for his new band Wolf Bros, including a rendition of Dead classic “Days Between.”Learn more about Lyte.

In 1981, Christmas albums for rock 'n' roll audiences didn't exist, and with the exception of a few snotty punk singles, there was nothing for young people who loved the music that emerged after punk and new wave. ZE Records' A Christmas Record occupied that space alone, though as label founder Michael Zilkha explains, the album was more of a marketing project than a specifically commercial venture. Still, it brought the world The Waitresses' classic "Christmas Wrapping," and included music by such iconic figures from the period as Labelle's Nona Hendrix, Was (Not Was), and Suicide. In this week's episode, Zilkha remembers the label's origins and decline, and how A Christmas Album was in many ways emblematic of its heyday. In our conversation, he talks about Cristina--Cristina Monet--who was an artist on ZE, and she would become his wife. Since Zilkha didn't talk about it in the interview, I didn't bring up her death from COVID-19 in 2020, but I wrote about it at MySpiltMilk.com shortly after she passed. In this week's episode, I use an excerpt from my interview with Chris Butler of The Waitresses from 2018. Earlier that year, I interviewed Mars Williams, who played saxophone on "Christmas Wrapping," and though I didn't include an excerpt from it, it shines more light on the experience. In today's episode, Zilkha talks about how the song has been covered, and although I don't announce it on the show, at that point I included a version by Kylie Minogue with guest Iggy Pop. The episode ends with an indie rock version by Hate Club from the Christmas compilation No Sleep 'til Christmas 8.

With seminal releases from Suicide, James Chance, Lydia Lunch, Was (Not Was), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, the Waitresses, and many others, ZE Records was described by John Peel as "the best independent record label in the world." UK-born Michael Zilkha founded the label alongside Michel Esteban in 1978, after running the short-lived Spy Records with John Cale. After the label closed in 1984, Zilkha left New York for Texas, where he now is in the renewable energy business. In this interview, we talk to Michael Zilkha about his early musical influences, his coming to New York immediately after school, and the formation of what would become one of the most acclaimed record labels of the era. “If you understand the process of making records, the style of music doesn't matter. What matters is that whoever the artist is, that they're being for real, that they're opening up and letting out this part of their inner life that defies explanation, where words fail to convey the true depth of our inner emotional lives. We use art as a metaphor to communicate it. - Don WasOn today's episode of Comes a Time, Mike & Oteil welcome bass player and record producer Don Was, co-founder of the funk-rock band Was (not Was) and later a producer on countless albums with major artists including the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Don shares his philosophy when it comes to producing a record and the occasional star-struck moments that still appear when he thinks on his career. The three also discuss Phil Lesh’s incredibly unique bass style and Oteil’s approach to filling that role in Dead & Company, along with the connection to the music that comes through playing Grateful Dead songs. Don Ferguson first became known to music audiences as a founding member of Was (Not Was), which he formed with childhood friend David Weiss in his hometown of suburban Detroit under the stage names Don Was and David Was. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Was (Not Was) released four studio albums that showcased their unique blend of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and dance music combined with satirical and unusual lyrics. Their 1988 album, What Up, Dog?, spawned the US and UK hit singles "Spy in the House of Love" and "Walk the Dinosaur." As an in-demand, highly acclaimed, and commercially successful producer since the late 1980s, Was has been honored with multiple Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award for his production work, which includes collaborations with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Brian Wilson, Ziggy Marley, and countless others. In 2012, he became the president of preeminent jazz label Blue Note Records. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ze Records - with Michael Zilkha in conversation with David Eastaugh   Within a short time, ZE Records became one of the more hip labels of its time, signing up such new talent as James White and the Blacks, Was (Not Was), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Lydia Lunch, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Cristina, The Waitresses, Bill Laswell’s Material and Richard Strange, together with more established performers including John Cale and Suicide. Many of its releases were first played at the Paradise Garage club in New York, starting point of Garage music. ZE developed an independent and surrealist aesthetic identity. It was described by John Peel in Melody Maker in 1980 as "the best independent record label in the world", and by Paul Tickell in The Face in 1982 as "the world¹s most fashionable label"

In the early '80s, Kid Creole and the Coconuts transcended the NYC dance scene to become something of an oddity nation-wide for a time. Here was lead singer August Darnell in a zoot suit, Coati Mundi dancing around behind marimbas, and three very shapely girls (the aforementioned Coconuts) doing choreography and backing vocals. And the music was fun, audacious, eclectic, and universal, although none of their records sold in big enough quantities to chart in the US (aside from the Billboard Dance Club Songs charts). There was also, in their nascent club-scene incarnation, Lori Eastside on co-lead vocals, but she didn't stick around long enough for the ascension to national fame. But the extant video of the time reveals that she was fantastic. And Carol Coleman was a bass player of noticeable depth, space, and groove. She will get your attention if you see videos of their live shows of the time, even though she barely moves. But her sound reminds me of George Murray, who, as both of you who listen to my show know, is my favorite bass player.  I SUCK at interviewing. But regardless, I interviewed Adriana Kaegi, "Mother Coconut", dancer, singer, songwriter, and an integral part of the band in their original incarnation, up to 1995.  I am not saying that KCatC was a big act, but they were influential. Prince was a fan, and as more and more people discover them through YouTube, their performances and original output live on.  I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby (1982) Coati Mundi - Que Pasa/Me No Pop I (1980) Table Manners (Live) (1981) From "Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places" - The Musical. Recorded at The Ritz in NYC.   The Sex Of It (1985) Written by Prince, who was white-hot at the time. The record went nowhere.  Stool Pigeon (1982)  Endicott (1985)  The Coconuts - Indiscreet (1983) The Coconuts - Did You Have To Love Me Like You Did? ( 12" Version ) (1983) Coati Mundi - I Say Hey (1983) Boomerang - Boomerang Fanfare/Boomerang (1986)  Aural Exciters - Maladie d'Amour (1979) Between Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band and KCatC, there was this odd disco record. The cover says it was produced by Bob Blank, but August wrote/co-wrote everything with another NYC guy, Ron Rogers, who produced/wrote many disco songs of the time. What a scene it must have been.  Christina - Disco Clone (1980) Written and produced by August Darnell.  Cristina - Jungle Love (1980) Cristina - Ticket To The Tropics (1984) August Darnell had nothing to do with this, but this particular song was co-written by one Doug Fieger of The Knack. You can sort of hear it. The album was produced by Don Was of Was Not Was who also produced records for (deep breath) Ringo Starr, Elton John, The B-52s, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Willy Nelson, etc.  Funkapolitan - As The Time Goes By (1982) Produced by August Darnell Prince - The Sex Of It (198?) Demo version. Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Going Places/In The Jungle (Live) (1981) From "Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places" - The Musical. Recorded at The Ritz in NYC.

The excellent Simon Witter joins us to offer essential expertise on Schneider's vital part in making Kraftwerk the hugely influential group they were, with discussion revolving around our guest's epic MOJO retrospective on the electronica godfathers. RBP's regular triumvirate consider pieces by the week's featured writer Lisa Verrico, commencing with a hilarious 1994 diatribe from the Fall's Mark E. Smith. More-up-to date are her great Sunday Times profiles of cutting-edge stars Billie Eilish and Christine & the Queens, prompting passionate endorsements by "our Jasper" Murison-Bowie. Being a tiny bit older than "our" Jasper, Mark Pringle & Barney Hoskyns steer the conversation towards the week's new audio interview. Clips from John Tobler's 1973 chat with Rick Nelson trigger musings on TV teen Idol Ricky's metamorphosis into a credible rock and roller – and then into the trailblazing L.A. country rocker whose Stone Canyon Band backed him on his wry Top 10 hit 'Garden Party'.  Finally, Mark walks us through the new library additions that most tickled his interest this week, including Jamie McCluskey III (a.k.a. Eden, a.k.a. Nikki Wine) chatting to the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson in 1965, David Keeps in conversation with Detroit's Was (Not Was) in 1983, and RJ Smith anticipating Trump's America in a prescient 1991 piece about Guns N' Roses. Barney pics Carol Clark's lovely 2001 lament for the inimitable Joey Ramone, while Jasper focuses on – among other items – John Calvert's 2015 dissection of problematic lyrics by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye…  Many thanks to special guest Simon Witter. In this episode there is talk of the B-52s, just what Don Was of Was (Not Was) is (not was), snares, lollies, distinctly 90s music videos, Jez thinking that "fromage" means yogurt instead of cheese and much more. Guitarist Randy Jacobs has a list of credits a mile long. The Detroit native's career goes back over 40 years and includes just about every genre there is - including a few years with Bonnie Raitt here, a couple with Paul Kelly there, etc. A guy doesn't get asked to play with the likes of Michael Henderson, Seal, Tears For Fears and Bruce Hornsby if he doesn't know what he's doing. But he may be best known as a member of the wholly unique supergroup Was (Not Was). He even co-wrote their biggest hit "Walk The Dinosaur." These days, when he isn't recruited to work with Depeche Mode or General Public, he's focused on his blues rock group with saxophonist Mindi Abair the Boneshakers. They just released a solid new album, No Good Deed, a couple weeks ago. Settle in and hear many stories from a guy who's been in the game longer than some of us have been alive!    https://www.randyjacobs.com/

Hey, remember Jurassic Park? The swell of John Williams' awe-inspiring score as we marveled at our first glimpse of CGI dinosaurs that still look real 25 years later? How smart Michael Crichton made us feel as we soaked up cutting-edge math and science? How Steven Spielberg once again redefined the summer blockbuster? Well, hold onto your butts. Five movies in, this inconsistent franchise is sitting on top of an active volcano, and it's about to blow. Cashing in on the massive success of the dumb/fun Jurassic World, the aptly named Fallen Kingdom doubles down on designer DNA and weaponized velociraptors. Our brave panel of scientists, mathematicians and bloodsucking lawyers digs into all things Jurassic. We talk rising sea levels, Bugs Bunny murder techniques, Jeep fashion, international Doritos tie-ins and which real-life rich dudes would attend a NorCal dinosaur auction. We even calculate the student-loan debt of a paleoveterinarian whose only potential employer is a boarded-up amusement park she's never even been to. Nasty woman! Syd Straw released her first album, Surprise, in 1989. The record was full of earnest, broken-hearted songs with an impressive range for a new artist. The album's earthy tone landed Straw at the leading edge of the alternative country curve, and it led a seemingly open-ended invitation for Straw to lend her vocals to some of the best in the business. To name a few, Straw has been onstage and on records with Los Lobos, Wilco, Dave Alvin, Loudon Wainwright III, Leo Kottke, Rickie Lee Jones, Matthew Sweet, Van Dyke Parks, Freedy Johnston, James McMurtry, Marc Ribot, David Sanborn, Was Not Was, Victoria Williams, the dBs, Jimmer Podrasky, and The Golden Palominos. Subsequent albums followed in 1996, 2005 and 2008, and although releases may have been spread out, the quality of Straw's output never suffered. Although Straw is perhaps best known for her vocals, the unique and indelible spirit that she brings to a song or a project is what makes her a legend. She is quirky, to be sure, but she's also endearing, pleasantly sardonic and always creative - a perfect combination for a singular artist.

AUDIO from Don Was: A Producer's Most Important Lesson About This Page By Rob Hochschild November 7, 2008 Over the four decades he's worked as a record producer, Don Was has worked with artists such as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, the B-52s, Amos Lee, Ziggy Marley, and the Rolling Stones. He won the 1994 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year and he produced a documentary about the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. Plus, the Detroit native is coleader of Was (Not Was), a band that fuses funk, r&b, rock, soul, pop, dance music, and other styles in a seamless blend that has yielded hits like "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love." And then, last month, he spent a week working closely with Berklee's music production and engineering majors. It was an experience that Was said will "recharge" his work as a producer. During his time on campus, Was gave an open clinic for students, staff, and faculty; met individually with student producers; and visited several classes. Was also granted a long, in-depth interview, during which he talked about many music-related subjects, including qualities of good producers, the state of the industry, and what it takes for bands to succeed in the studio. Afro-Jersey was formed in 2008 when old friends Terre Roche and Sidiki Conde began to write songs together in both English and Mandingo just for fun.   Terre Roche is best known for being one of The Roches. She has worked with Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, Was Not Was, Philip Glass, Kathy Mattea, Meredith Monk and the Indigo Girls to name a few. She sang the role of Squeaky Fromme in John Moran's opera, The Manson Family. She was one of the soloists on Robert Fripp's album "Exposure".   In 1998 she put out a solo CD, "The Sound of a Tree Falling". Terre collaborated with jazz pianist Garry Dial on the 2008 release "Us an'Them", a collection of national anthems from around the world featuring musicians from the countries all of whom were living in New York City.   From 2002 to the present, Terre has led the popular "Sunset Singing Circle", a Battery Parks City sponsored singalong which takes place in May and June. Currently she is the musical coordinator for Lanny Harrison's "Characters in Motion" class at the New York Shambhala Center and has been a featured artist in Mark Lamb Dance's spectacular multi-media salons, featuring music, dance and spoken word performances.  Terre Roche, Sidiki Conde, and Marlon Cherry, a/k/a Afro-Jersey, sing in both the English and Mandingo languages.

Couch Surfing Episode 08 - The Whedon/Zombie Dance-OffIn episode eight of Couch Surfing, our heroes rejoice at the end of the Writer’s Strike. Scott gushes about the new ABC show, Eli Stone, but weeps about the latest FOX game show, The Moment of Truth. John finally finishes Veronica Mars, and Scott must talk him down off the ledge, over the unsatisfactory ‘ending’. They both praise the mind blowing bargains from Deep Discount. Scott finds the willpower not to punch a kitten after watching the BBC show, Primeval, while John shares a childhood story of his mad archery skills. The two of them finish up the show by lamenting Joss Whedon’s frustrating lack of follow-through, and laughing at the absurdity of Rob Zombie possibly directing Conan. The following artists can be heard in this episode:Leroy, Shakespeare’s Sister, Lords of Acid, George Michael, Fleetwood Mac, The Bravery, INXS, Bjork & PJ Harvey, The Delays, Guided By Voices, The Dandy Warhols, Primal Scream, Prince, Was Not Was, Hans Zimmer, AFI, Evanescence, Scissor Sisters, Nickelback, Staind, White Zombie and The Dollyrots.
