100 Thieves cleared the bar against Dignitas by a higher margin than we anticipated. It feels a little like 100T has their groove back, but how much can we really read into this weekend? The dads spend time talking about what was different this go-around, discuss why the midlaner debate between Damonte and Ryoma should be permanently put to rest, and the challenges of communicating to fans faced by Papasmithy and Co. Classic Ghost Stories

His Beautiful Hands by Oscar CookThis will be the second of Oscar Cook's stories we have read, the first being Boomerang.  Boomerang is https://player.captivate.fm/episode/f7098556-f342-4667-b9f2-65424796b616 (here) It was danged hard to find a copy of His Beautiful Hands, but I succeeded. HBH is rated as one of the best horror stories in those inevitable lists that pop up on the Internet, almost certainly compiled by people who never read it because print copies of the anthologies it was in are either out of print or cost hundreds of cash units (dollars, pounds, euros, roubles, take your pick).  Cook's work, I realise now, is characterised by graphic body horror rather than the supernatural so it is a horror story rather than a ghost story.  He deliberately sets out to shock us, but shocks modern listeners most probably by accident. What I mean is that we have become inured to graphic horror, after all we have had The Saw and The Human Caterpillar (neither of which I've seen) and the horrid bit in Midsommer when the old folks jump off the cliff and are then finished off... but let's not go into that.  Then he throws in a bit of incest. That's never nice and I think even modern listeners find that shocking. As an aside, I actually deplore the race for shock that you see in detective series on TV. Once theft was enough (if you go back far enough), then murder became a staple, then we had serial killers, serial rapists and now we have a regrettably frequent addition of paedophilia sometimes with incest thrown in. I prefer Miss Marple personally, and I'd say to the TV companies: don't pander after these most base shock-jock tactics, you're better than that. I saw the Dig on Netflix recently with Ralph Fiennes. How brilliant that was. And I like the Detectorists also. But back to Oscar Cook. Oscar Cook BiographyRichard Martin Oscar Cook was born in London in 1888 and died also in London in 1952. His father owned an athletic goods company and they were fairly well-off. He seems to have been brought up in Broxbourne just outside London and his first job was a clerk there but very shortly afterwards he went to make his fortune in a rubber planation in Borneo. Unfortunately he did not get on well and was sacked, but remained in Borneo and got another job in the British Colonial Service. He was an administrator of the British Empire and worked in North Borneo from 1911 until 1918 and then had District Officer posts. This was a position in the British Colonial Service and these administrators and often magistrate was at the heart of colonial administration in the British colonies. He was married in 1924 to Christine Campbell Thomson but got divorced in 1938. When he returned to England he wrote an autobiography of his time in Borneo and thereafter wrote supernatural stories, many of which appeared in various anthologies. This story appeared in the 2nd Pan Book of Horror. I used to read those books when I was a kid, which may explain a lot. Cook bought a controlling interest in a publishing company which produced a series of horror anthologies called Not at Night which ran to twelve books. His Beautiful HandsStarts like Boomerang I think with the device of the urbane Englishman in his club in the Far East. This fellow has few adventures and relies on his unsteady journalist friend Warwick to tell him the ghastly tales.  He even warns us it is going to be horrible. And it is. As the story goes structurally, it's pretty neat. It has at least two twists, probably three: that the manicurist poisoned him so his fingers drop off (ideal revenge on a violinist); that she is his daughter; and that the child is his.  It is ghastly and shocking and if you like that kind of thing, then it's good. I'm amazed it was published in 1931. I like the conversational style at the beginning that allows a lot of expression when reading. I also quite liked the fact that Paulina throws the rotted finger... Support this podcast

Dig the well before you’re thirsty. That is something that has been told to me several times over the years and is the perfect philosophy when it comes to creating a community. We’ve all been in situations where someone from high school or a distant relative randomly reaches out under the pretense of re-connecting only to ask for a favor or try to sell us something. We’ve been in Facebook groups where people who never post or provide feedback suddenly surface around book launch to continuously post their promotional content. We’ve received random emails from fellow writers asking for a blurb, social media support, and so on.None of us want to be those people, but we feel like we have to. It’s true, successful authors rarely do it alone. They rely on the support of fellow authors, super-fans, and their friends and family. But if you don’t want to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths, it’s necessary to nurture those relationships before asking for favors. You must dig your well before you’re thirsty. This is something today’s guest, Lainey Cameron, has truly embraced. Before she was published, she joined Women’s Fiction Writers Association and provided support for their events and social media channels. When she secured her book contract, she joined the 2020 Debuts, a group of traditionally published authors making their publishing debut in 2020. She also reached out to friends and family to join her launch team who not only helped her promote her novel, but provided morale boosts and encouragement as well.In this episode, Lainey shares the power of online communities and the impact it has made on her writing career. Sometimes it’s so crystal clear that a crime was committed, who did the crime, why the crime was committed and where to go find the bad guy – it’ll drive you nuts.  And that is pretty much the story of the disappearance of 23 year-old Austin “Jay” Smith exactly 28 years ago on March 23, 1993. when he left his home in the suburbs of Southern California's San Gabriel Valley and never returned.  It’s enough to make a sane person go mad.  Dig it:  We know Jay went to an appointment that evening, meeting a former employer who was renting audio-video equipment at a local high school – despite the fact that said former employer was furious with Jay for reporting him to the school for pocketing rental money for himself.  We know that when he didn’t return at the expected time, Jay’s girlfriend drove to the auditorium where she saw Jay’s truck and the former employer’s camper parked, and that when she banged on the auditorium door, the disheveled former employer opened briefly, only to slam the door in the girlfriend’s face.  We know that shortly thereafter, when the girlfriend drove back around to the auditorium, Jay’s truck was gone but the former employer’s camper was still there – and that Jay’s truck was found the next day just a few blocks from the auditorium – and that a witness states he gave the former employer a ride back to the auditorium late on the night of the 23rd when he saw him walking near where Jay’s truck was found – and that a barrel large enough to hold someone of Jay’s size was found to be missing the day after Jay’s disappearance…  …oh – and then there’s the fact that after initially being interviewed by the police, the former employer left town for TWO WEEKS without letting anyone know where he went.  In his camper.  Which had plenty of room to carry a barrel.  And 28 years later, the former employer has never been arrested.  See – Jay’s body has never been found.  And until recently, the Los Angeles County DA’s office simply didn’t prosecute “no body” cases.  That has changed – and for the past 8 years a dedicated detective named Richard Lopez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau has been doggedly pursuing answers – looking for that one shred of evidence or witness to put Jay Smith’s case over the top so he can make the arrest so many have been expecting for so long.  Listen in as Melissa relates this agonizingly simple-yet-impossibly-difficult story – and urges anyone who knows anything about what happened to Jay to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Sarah Acton, VP of Sales and Marketing for Athos, has done so by building a synergistic organization that shares customer stories, digs into customer needs, and listens to each other. On this episode of Studio CMO, Sarah discusses: How to Listen to Your Customer and Each Other How to Build Internal Synergy for the Benefit of the Customer How to Cultivate a Company's Culture and Values Tips for Hiring the Best HealthTech Talent What it Takes to be a Good Client for an Agency About Our Guest Sarah Acton is the VP of Sales and Marketing at Athos, a wearable technology company focused on ensuring all types of athletes, from professionals to military tactical athletes, are prepared and ready to perform. With roots in consumer products at Coca-Cola, retail at Home Depot, her own business, and consumer tech at Yahoo! and LinkedIn, Sarah learned early the power of storytelling and how using data can transform and personalize a brand experience. Athos is a patented system that enables the world’s first smart clothing to measure how hard your muscles are working using the science of EMG (Electromyography). This is combined with powerful AI and a mobile app gives you insights to truly understand how your body performs. The system has helped athletes at all levels train better and smarter, whatever your goal. Show Notes "Our job as sales and marketing professionals is to take what we know about our product and service and find the intersection that resonates with the customer's own problem." — Sarah Acton How to Listen to Your Customer and Each Other Listening as been a core part of Sarah's life. She can point to many defining, salient moments in her life where something changed as a result of listening. Meet face-to-face (or on the phone or video conference) with customers. Be curious. Dig in to ideas you haven't heard before. Have the mindset, "There's always something new to learn." Record sales calls as often as you can. Share a few sales calls with the entire company from time to time (provide a mix of good and bad). Seek to understand the day-to-day lives of your customers. Identify themes that arise from different sources. Become a copious notetaker. "The more we, as a business, can understand our customers, understand their day-to-day lives, the better we can deliver on our promises to them. And the better we can create solutions that really meet—and surpass—their needs." — Sarah Acton How to Build Internal Synergy for the Benefit of the Customer When we work together, everything gets better." —Sarah Acton In order to get any two (or more) departments to work together, the must spend time together around customer problems. Examples: Product Development Invites Marketing and Sales to Product Discovery. sessions. All parties listen in on live customer service calls. Managers can build a shared desire to win and then share the wins together. All parties hold frequent check in meetings. How to Cultivate a Company's Culture and Values Do you know and reflect often on your company's culture and values? For reference: Athos' Mission Golden Spiral Values Sarah shared a powerful story of how Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, leaned on his CTO, Kevin Scott. Find out more about this powerful relationship. “I would share my problem with Kevin because then Kevin could start thinking about the solution to the problem, too.” — Reid Hoffman Tips for Hiring the Best HealthTech Talent Look for people who show a pattern of being intrigued by problems. Ask how they solved difficult problems. Discover how they push themselves out of the comfort zone. Foster interviews that are times for stories and not just facts. Find indicators that your candidates have a drive to solve the problems of tomorrow. What it Takes to Be a Good Client for an Agency Sarah spent many years working for agencies serving clients and has hired agencies as a marketing executive within companies. She's seen both sides of the relationship. She and John Farkas shared a number of tips. As a company: Do find an agency sees the client relationships the way you do. Don't lob a problem over the fence to your agency and expect them to solve it. Do become a partner with your agency. Don't hide and obfuscate information. Do "open the kimono" and be vulnerable about the problems you are facing. Don't build an adversarial relationship with the idea of squeezing every dime out of the agency. Do be open and honest about your real budget and listen carefully to the agency's capacity to supply solutions within that budget. Do share the wins with your agency partner. Do work together to optimize your resources and those of the agency. "I always strive to make my agency partners feel just as much a part of our wins as my internal team." — Sarah Acton The Nature of Change John shared this quote often used at our Foundation Workshops. Can you identify the author? “It ought to be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. Because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new.” Listen at 25:35 to discover who. Golden Spiral's Foundation Experience Do you feel your company is invisible in your marketplace? The right agency can help you stand out in the middle of your competition and be seen for all the right reasons. Our Foundations Workshop is the perfect methodology to shape your story. Our proven process unpacks, then crystalizes, who you are, what your solution does, why you exist, and who needs to know. The workshop assembles all your stakeholders in the same place at the same time. You will build consensus and gain clarity in amazing ways. Over It And On With It
EP 288: How to Navigate Confusing Emotions with Olivia

Over It And On With It

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2021 45:17

This episode is about honoring emotions with compassion and acceptance. Today’s caller, Olivia, is going through a unique situation. She is feeling confused by her emotions and would like guidance on how to feel her feelings without going into “victim” and how to grieve after a loss.   [For show notes go here: Christinehassler.com/episode288]   It is normal for emotions to be confusing. We live in a mental, logical, linear-based world where we want certainty. We want things to make sense. But life isn’t linear, there aren’t five steps to make every sense of everything. Life is messy. It’s complicated. It’s a journey. Especially when it comes to emotions, we don’t want to try to manage them, understand them, or know why. We just need to learn how to feel and move through them. But, often, our mind gets in the way. This is the biggest reason so many people deal with repression, suppression, depression and then have to distract themselves or develop addictions. It’s because we don’t know how to be with our emotions.   Most of the time, when we are crying or feeling we are analyzing it. Maybe not allowing ourselves to be in the emotion and ride the waves. One wave could have twenty different feelings in it. It is about letting yourself go with compassion.   If you want to evolve and be free of some of the stuff that is weighing you down, you have to feel. We only get lost in our feelings when we judge them or when we go into “victim.”   Join Stefanos and me for our 3-day virtual Inner Child Workshop. It’s not about working on yourself. It’s about connecting to your little one and letting go of some things you have been carrying around. We can help you bring your little one into their future, which is your present, and help them feel loved and safe. ChristineHassler.com/innerchild — March 19–21, 2021. Listen to past group coaching calls at ChristineHassler.com/group-coaching-replays.   Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you often feel confused about your feelings? Do you feel guilty about feeling the way you feel? Do you put other people’s needs above yours, making their feelings and tending to their feelings and their concerns more of a priority? Do you feel overwhelmed with a current emotion? Are you scared if you go into it you will lose yourself? Are you going through a loss of any kind? A loss of a person you love, a pet, job, a dream?   Olivia’s Question: Olivia has had major heartbreak and loss and is confused about how to feel.   Olivia’s Key Insights and Ahas: She ended a long-term relationship and then her ex married quickly after. Her ex passed away tragically within a year of their breakup. She feels stuck in her emotions. She feels confused and guilty about being upset. She looks to other people about how to feel. She didn’t attend his funeral. She is a people pleaser and puts others first. She can fall into “victim” and judge herself. She buries her anger.   How to Get Over It and On With It: Give herself permission to feel all of her feelings. Allow herself to grieve. Honor what she is feeling with compassion. Realize she may never get an apology. Perform a personal memorial service for her ex. Dig up her anger to release it with the Anger Release technique. Practice the Empty Chair process from Personal Mastery.   Takeaways: Practice riding the waves with compassion for yourself and others. Allow emotions to be confusing. You don’t need to understand them mentally. The body and heart understand emotions, not your mind. Do you like Eddie Murphy? Then this is the episode of The Movie Breakdown you've been waiting to hear, as we review his first ever and his most recent picture. We go all the way back 1982 where Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte team-up in what is one of the first buddy-cop action comedies in the Walter Hill directed, 48 Hrs. Then we jump all the way to 2021 for the brand-new release and the sequel to a film from way back in the 1980s in Coming 2 America. We also review a non-Eddie Murphy movie in the Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes starring period drama, The Dig. From there we discuss how streaming services should handle older movies and shows that either have problematic stars or material that hasn't aged well. Brad Pitt – credits his sobriety to Bradley Cooper.   Florence Welsh – sobriety does not doom you to boredom.  David Lloyd George, British Prime Minister in the early 1900’s, backed the licensing bill.  Dax Shepherd says he wouldn’t have anything he has without his sobriety.  His guests and podcast sponsors are a lot of fun. Anthony Hopkins recently hit 45 years, sober saying, “Hang in there.  Today is the tomorrow you were so worried about yesterday.  Young- people, don’t give up.  Just keep in there” Cristiano Ronaldo, a Portuguese soccer player, is sober.  His father passed from alcohol abuse, and Cristiano has changed his life trajectory and is a role model of sobriety for his family.   Al Pacino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert Downey, Jr., Eminem, Chrissy Teigen, Keith Urban, Kelly Osbourne, Ben Affleck, Gillian Jacobs, James Franco, John Travolta, Shakira, J.Lo, Stephen King, Eva Mendes, Tom Cruise,  Natalie Portman, Elton John, Zac Efron, Tyra Banks, Daniel Radcliffe, Demi Lovato, Chris Martin (Coldplay) among many others are on the sober team.   We are not alone, we are not boring, quite the contrary.  Sobriety is the gateway to authenticity.  How do you feel about joining the alcohol-free club and staying in it with us?   [8:57] Odette Introduces Lunita   Lunita is Latina like Odette.  She hit reset on  October 10, 2020.  She is an American-born bi-cultural person from San Diego and a single mom.  Her father is from Panama, and her mother is from Mexico.  Her daughters are 9 and 11.  She is a yoga teacher and healing arts practitioner.  She loves nature, plant medicine, yoga, and she is a poet, writer, painter and loves anything to do with arts and the body.    [11:42]  Tell us about your history with drinking?   Lunita took her first drink at 14 in Mexico, where the lines are a little more blurred.  As she looks back at that time, drinking gave her a sense of calm and inner knowing that she had never felt before.  Her nervous system was soothed by alcohol.  She was a highly sensitive child, and her parents didn’t know how to manage her gifts.    She drank through her teenage years into her twenties.  Occasionally she would blackout.  She liked drinking.  She said alcohol took her from a highly sensitive introvert to a comfortable, fun drunk.  It awakened her artistic side.  She didn’t want to stop because it was fun.    Fast forward, Lunita got pregnant, got married, had two children, and drinking became her coping mechanism for managing parenting as a young adult.    She was a part of the mommy wine culture.  She realized she was drinking every night.  After she and her husband separated, her drinking became dark.  She drank every night while trying to hold it together for work and her daughters.  She hated her life and felt terrible and disconnected from herself every day.  Her husband and best friend made comments about her drinking, but she didn’t want to stop. Drinking became a medication, a chemical dependency.  Alcohol was sinking Lunita.   In her thirties, she was cornered by a cousin, then her best friend who caught her sneaking drinks or blacking out.    [17:19]  How did you respond to the comments from other people?   Lunita said she was telling herself it was ok.  She would get defensive or appease others with slogans like “mommy happy hour”  “5 o’clock somewhere”.  She was presentable, so she didn’t think there was a problem.    She found herself being very inconsistent.  She was eating clean, practicing yoga,  running, drinking green smoothies, but drinking every night.  She was aware of the dissonance, but she still didn’t want to stop drinking.   [20:52}  Tell me about the shift within you.   Lunita said she started drinking hard liquor instead of beer or wine because she could get drunk faster, with fewer calories.  Her body reacted right away.  The hangovers became worse, she lost her appetite, and the fun of drinking turned into darkness.  She began to experience rock bottom moments in relationships or at work.  She was no longer in denial but wasn’t sure what to do.   Four years ago, her friend said, “you’ve got to do something.” She was sober for two years.  Since then, she’s had some resets.  She knew it was die or get sober.   [24:06] Have you identified the reasons why you would drink again, and what tools have you added along the way?   Lunita said community, healing, yoga, meditation, and plants allowed her to release alcohol from her life for two years.  She felt alive, vital, and fresh.  Then she said she thought she could pursue healthy drinking with wine or beer, no hard liquor.  She wasn’t blacking out, but she noticed a gradual backslide with her relationships and her work.  The old habit wasn’t serving her anymore.  She had a brief period of drinking again but was sober for six months.  In October, she reset her self-talk and said, I am not doing anything that doesn’t serve me.  That became a massive shift for her, from her highest self.   She doesn’t choose anything that doesn’t suit her anymore.   She now focuses on activism about alcohol.  She believes it is a privilege to have a functional relationship with alcohol.  Now that she is sober, the work she is offering the world makes a difference.   [31:16]  Tell me more about this time being different?  How do you deal with cravings or discomfort?   Lunita said she deals with discomfort by leveraging therapy.  As a human, she wants to do her own work while continuing to help others.  Her therapist has been crucial.  Accountability through community has been instrumental for her.   She said that having a sober partner has made an enormous difference for her, and she appreciates his support.  Community is huge for Lunita, and her yoga practice, breathwork, herbs, and running are pivotal.  They help healthily regulate her nervous system.   Lunita drinks embarrassing amounts of Pellegrino, teas, tonics, and elixirs to overcome cravings.   [35:21]  You described yourself as a sensitive person, an empath.  How has the acceptance of your true essence shifted your ability to be authentic to yourself?   Lunita said it had been a journey and a stubborn need to overcome the distortions, toxic family structure, the lies she told herself, and accept she is not like anyone else and isn’t meant to be.  Her reclamation of herself came from sobriety and being sober.  She avoided talking about recovery during her first two years of sobriety because of the shame.  Now she knows some of the most radical, authentic beings have issues with addiction.  She is learning to make space for herself, rebel for herself, and heal herself so she can be an example for her daughters.   [41:46] Tell me about your relationships and how they have shifted over the years?   Lunita said the law of quantum physics means our vibe attracts people who are with us.    She was attracting certain people who were looking for a healing, medicine, or heart.  Those relationships were not serving her because they were one-way relationships.  Now she has an amazing partner because she is serving her highest self.  She attracts people who participate equally in relationships with her.  She was dating the same version of who she was.  When she started honoring her true self, all of her relationships changed.  She now attracts beautiful heart-centered people.   [46:39}  Rapid Fire Round   What are you excited about right now? I am completely myself – for better or worse.  In every relationship, in every moment, I am myself.  It is such a relief.   What would you say to your younger self? Your weirdness is magic.  You don’t have to try to be cool, Do YOU.   What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Chocolate chip cookie dough   What piece of guidance would you give to listeners who are thinking about ditching the booze? You are so much braver and more capable than you think.  If I can do it, you can do it.  Seek support from people who want to help you.  Dig into yourself.   There is an endless well of spirit and heart.  We just have to tap into that – it’s there.  I promise everything you need you have.   You may have to say adios to booze if ….   If you are hiding bottles.   Odette’s Weekly Challenge Search for sober people in your interest bubbles (sober Mom’s, sober artists, sober photographers, sober writers).  We are all out here; you just have to look closer.  Denzel Washington said, “I made a commitment to completely cut out drinking and anything that might hamper me from getting my mind and body together.  The floodgates of goodness have opened upon me:  spiritually, emotionally, and financially.    You are not alone, together is always better.  Welcome to the sober club.  I promise it's going to be fun.        Upcoming events, retreats, and courses: Bozeman 2021 (August 18-22, 2021) This is our flagship annual retreat held in the pristine forests of Big Sky Country, 10 miles south of Bozeman, Montana. Welcome to Episode 25 of our Flagship Podcast!!!In today’s show, the Brothers selected three uniquely different movies to review. Each host will lead the review on their film selection and inspire an in depth discussion on the story, writing, direction, technicals, scenes, trivia, and more! First on deck, Arnaz opens up with the HBO Max streamer "THE TANK". Six people volunteer to enter an isolation tank in Antartica to simulate life on Mars. Over a long period of time, the crew experience hardships and conflict. Finally, on the day they should be released from the isolation tank, all hell breaks loose.Second on deck, Del picked the Netflix original "THE DIG". Set in 1930, on the precipice of Germany's declaration of war against England, a wealthy land owner hires an amateur archeologist to excavate the burial mounds on her property. Less of a historical account and more of a human story, this film features several storylines told by the perspective of those involved. Finally, Kenny brings the episode to a close with his selection of Amazon Prime Video's "GUNS AKIMBO". A video game programmer and a self proclaimed "troller of trolls" finds himself forced into a real life game where he must kill or be killed. Radcliffe takes on a role straight out of a graphic novel put on screen by a director who's roots lie in visual effects. As this is a review show, there will be spoilers, especially for a film from 2017. We hope you enjoy our discussion on these three films. Hit us up on our social media to let us know your thoughts about these films and if you feel we missed any important talking points. [Y/n] y ::: Updated server config ::: Client config for Mobile_Worker removed ::: Client Keys for Mobile_Worker removed ::: Successfully deleted Mobile_Worker ::: WireGuard reloaded MagicMirror The final step is to have the MagicMirror in the living room display the shared calendar. To display your calendar there, you need to have an ics iCalendar file. You can get that by login into NextCloud as the MagicMirror user via the web, going to the calendar you desire to export. Click the ... menu and select "Copy Private Link". You can then add the ?export at the end of the url to get an ical export. Dave gave me a tip on how to have MagicMirror serve this file, by using its own local webserver. You point it to a local directory eg: http://localhost:8080/modules/.calendars/. Don't forget to create it. mkdir -p ~/MagicMirror/modules/.calendars/ I wrote a script that would first get a new version of the ical file, and if it is downloaded correctly would immediately overwrite the previous one. [magicmirror@magicmirror ~]$ cat /home/pi/bin/cal.bash #!/bin/bash wget --quiet --output-document /home/pi/MagicMirror/modules/.calendars/home_calendar.ics.tmp --auth-no-challenge --http-user=magicmirror --http-password="PASSWORD" "https://nextcloud.example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/calendars/magicmirror/personal_shared_by_House/?export" > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ -s /home/pi/MagicMirror/modules/.calendars/home_calendar.ics.tmp ] then mv /home/pi/MagicMirror/modules/.calendars/home_calendar.ics.tmp /home/pi/MagicMirror/modules/.calendars/home_calendar.ics fi [snip...] I then scheduled this to run every 15 minutes. [magicmirror@magicmirror ~]$ crontab -l */15 * * * * /home/pi/bin/cal.bash >/dev/null 2>&1 The final step was to update my Calendar entry in the ~/MagicMirror/config/config.js config file. // Calendar { module: "calendar", header: "Calendar", position: "top_center", config: { colored: true, maxTitleLength: 30, fade: false, calendars: [ { name: "Family Calendar", url: "http://localhost:8080/modules/.calendars/home_calendar.ics", symbol: "calendar-check", color: "#825BFF" // violet-ish }, { name: "Birthday Calendar", url: "http://localhost:8080/modules/.calendars/birthday_calendar.ics", symbol: "calendar-check", color: "#FFCC00" // violet-ish }, { // Calendar uses repeated 'RDATE' entries, which this iCal parser // doesn't seem to recognise. Only the next event is visible, and // the calendar has to be refreshed *after* the event has passed. name: "HPR Community News recordings", url: "http://hackerpublicradio.org/HPR_Community_News_schedule.ics", symbol: "calendar-check", color: "#C465A7" // purple }, { // https://inzamelkalender.gad.nl/ical-info name: "GAD Calendar", url: "https://inzamelkalender.gad.nl/ical/0381200000107654", symbol: "calendar-check", color: "#00CC00" // Green }, ] } }, The contacts birthday wasn't available to the MagicMirror user immediately after I created it, so I was able to force an update as follows: root@nextcloud:/var/www/html/nextcloud# sudo -u www-data php occ dav:sync-birthday-calendar Start birthday calendar sync for all users ... 7 [============================] Conclusion With that we have a family sharing solution just like other normal house holds. Yet with the security of knowing that the data doesn't leave the house, and is not being used without your approval. You can tell it's a hit, because now people are scheduling tech support tasks via the app. Ah well.

70: What to Do When Your Qualitative Article Gets Rejected

Academic Woman Amplified

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2021 22:21

Has your qualitative research article been rejected or given a painful revise-and-resubmit? Here are the 5 things you should do next.   What should you do when your article gets rejected, or you’re given a painful revise-and-resubmit? I’m talking specifically about qualitative research here, but the basic principles can be applied for all kinds of research and writing. In episode 9 I lay out the step by step plan I use to process and respond to feedback and writing criticism, so check that out if you haven’t yet.  5 Things to Do After Receiving a Rejection or Revise and Resubmit for Your Qualitative Article   #1: Think About Fit Some journals might seem like a good fit by topic, but you’ll want to delve a little deeper. Who is on the board and what kind of work have they published? What kinds of things has the journal been publishing in the last 2-5 years? Can you tell if the journal has an aversion to qualitative research in general?    #2: Analyze Feedback What is the feedback really saying? Is it trying to help you improve your article, or is it expressing a core difference in belief about how knowledge is made (i.e., they don’t put stock in qualitative research)? If it’s a core difference, you’re not going to convince them to accept your work. Better to move on.    #3: Dig Into Your Disciplines Qualitative research is highly interdisciplinary in nature. Dig in to the different disciplines your article touches on. Make a list of each one, then look for journals that might be a closer match to one or another of those disciplines. You might need to make some revisions, but consider submitting under one of those other areas.   #4: Double Check the Rigor If you listened to episode 69 you know that this was a stumbling block for me with the first article I tried publishing. As qualitative researchers, it is especially important for us to clearly establish the rigor of the research. On my journey, rejection with feedback and 7 years of development as a scholar got me where I needed to go.    If you’d like a slightly quicker route, I’ve got a shortcut for you: My friend Maira Quintanilha's course, Qualitative Research Blueprint is enrolling now. This course is for qualitative researchers who want to hone their research skills as well as anyone looking to add qualitative research to their repertoire. (More info on this fantastic opportunity below.)   #5: Try Again If you get a rejection with feedback, be sure to analyze that feedback before you decide what move to make next. Try not to read into a desk rejection with no feedback. Go through the steps outlined above and submit to another publication that might value qualitative research more highly, or be a better disciplinary fit. Pivot, and send it someplace else!   “If you feel confident in the qualitative rigor of your work...then it really is best not to spend a lot of time overthinking...when you get rejected.”    Bonus Step: Hone Your Qualitative Research Skills Confidence in the rigor of your research is so important! If you’ve received feedback about clearly expressing rigor (like I did), or if you’ve struggled in any way with your qualitative research, you are going to want to sign up for the Qualitative Research Blueprint course by my friend Maira Quintanilha which is now open for enrollment!   In this course, you will gain the confidence and skill to achieve desired impacts with your qualitative research project by learning how to design, implement and write rigorous, impactful research.
