Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director of Canopy, shares a comprehensive view of how her organization leverages the global marketplace to catalyze large-scale forest conservation. Founded in 1999, Canopy is a solutions-driven nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding the world's ancient and endangered forests by working with diverse stakeholders, including key corporate actors to reform supply chains traditionally reliant on forest degradation. Today, Canopy collaborates with over 1,000 brands, including major names like H&M, LVMH, and Penguin Random House, to help shift the fiber sourcing for packaging, paper, and textiles toward more circular, low-carbon alternatives. At the heart of Canopy's strategy is an understanding that forests are deeply intertwined with the global economy. Each year, more than five billion trees are cut down for consumer products, many from high-carbon, biodiverse ecosystems critical for climate stability. Recognizing that supply chains are a major driver of deforestation, Canopy works directly with corporations to develop robust environmental policies and to pressure suppliers to move away from sourcing from vital forests. Moreover, Canopy engages companies in advocating for systemic policy changes and creating space at decision-making tables for Indigenous and local community leaders. Rycroft emphasizes the profound evolution of corporate attitudes toward sustainability over the past two decades. Where once sustainability registered as a low-level concern, today it sits as a strategic priority at the C-suite level. Companies are increasingly driven by the need for resilient supply chains, regulatory compliance, and achieving climate targets. The volatility of traditional supply chains—exacerbated by climate change, wildfires, and resource scarcity—has pushed executives to seek more circular and sustainable models. An integral part of Canopy's work is building bridges between the corporate sector and Indigenous communities, whose stewardship has preserved much of the world's remaining biodiversity. Through storytelling and direct engagement, Indigenous leaders have been effective at connecting with corporate audiences, making the case for conservation through a deeply human lens that complements economic and regulatory arguments. A significant current initiative is Canopy's work in India, aimed at scaling "next generation" (Next Gen) fiber solutions—transforming agricultural waste and recycled textiles into paper, packaging, and clothing. India's vast agricultural residue problem, coupled with its global leadership in textile manufacturing, presents a major opportunity. In response, Canopy is developing a $2 billion blended finance platform to catalyze investment in this emerging sector, with plans to replicate this model in other regions of the Global South. The initiative reflects a broader shift toward blended finance mechanisms that leverage grants, concessional capital, and private investments to accelerate sustainable industrial transformation. Rycroft concludes by emphasizing that the solutions needed to safeguard forests and transition to circular supply chains already exist and are ready to scale. Bold corporate leadership and smart capital deployment will be key in the decisive decade ahead. With a growing coalition of committed brands and an urgent ecological timeline, the momentum for systemic change is tangible—and Canopy stands at the forefront of this effort. O tom, aké možnosti a výhody predajcom ponúka zapojenie do Kaufland Global Marketplace, nášmu Michalovi porozprávala Simona Sumegová, Sales Manager tohto projektu. Meet Valerie Bowden, a young mother who after living in Ethiopia for eight years returned to the U.S. with her family and founded a business that connects African talent to entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Canada.Charity and aid in Africa often do more harm than good, creating an inequitable relationship. Business partnerships offer a win-win model for fairer relationships. When I asked Valerie if she ever doubted herself when creating Crdle she said “No.  It was a burning inside me that I couldn't NOT do.”  Too many Africans on the continent were telling her fair business relationships was what they needed, not “aid.” So she turned that social work ethic, including that of listening to people and supporting their leadership, to becoming an entrepreneur herself and a partner with small businesses and entrepreneurs in Africa. On this episode of Mother Tree Network, Valerie joins us to talk about her organization Crdle, which connects African entrepreneurs and skilled individuals with partners in the global marketplace. Valerie shares cultural differences between Ethiopian and US work culture and how building relationships can enhance productivity. Valerie and I talked about the Ethiopian cultural differences that could benefit American work culture, including:Centering relationshipMaking people more important than timeMoving at the rate of trustValerie has a five-month old baby and when I asked how she manages a start up and her young family, she said that she prioritizes self-care.  She gets up at 4:30am every morning and begins her day with three hours of quiet, movement, journaling, and coffee.  She also gets 7-8 hours of sleep every night because her body breaks down without that minimum.  How does she do all of this and run a business?Partnerships. She has a Ugandhan partner who handles a lot of the back-end business aspects so that she can focus on spending her days promoting African talent and match-making.Sustainably paid African partners can benefit both entrepreneurs seeking to expand their operations and those looking to start a side hustle. Paying a fair wage helps to reset  the balance towards more fair relationships and business endeavors. Valerie challenges stereotypes about people from different cultures and encourages trying new things to learn and grow. She has worked with non-profits in African communities and realized that many charities do not make a real impact, and some actually cause damage. By adopting a business approach, Valerie creates win-win partnerships where both parties benefit and there is a more fair and balanced relationship.Valerie shares how African businesses can offer unique and cool products that aren't found in the US. New Zealand Media Entertainment (NZME) today posted a $5.6 million net profit for the half year to June. That's up 85% on last year and shareholders will get a dividend for the first time since 2018. NZME owns around half the country's radio stations (including Newstalk ZB) as well as brands such as the New Zealand Herald, Viva and One Roof.  CEO Michael Boggs says the company is able to now pay a dividend because they've paid down their debts. Three years ago, the company had over $100 million debt, today just $18.6 million. The board was also in a position to do a capital return to shareholders, but has decided to wait for a little bit more certainty around what's happening in the market environment. NZME has also announced a conditional sale of its brand GrabOne to Global Marketplace. The sale is due to be completed by 31 October 2021. LISTEN ABOVE
